ill Your Ad Language Spark Interest? Most of us rather let the media attention do our PR to gain credibility. However, we would be fooling ourselves if we believe that relying on that alone we are going to obtain our sales goals; especially if we are first-time or unknown authors. It is a fact we need to budget PR and ads along with our media pitches to market our book. Yes, ads can be expensive, and are not always effective; therefore, we need to also strategize our ads campaigns in order to get the best results possible, and the best way to do it is to make sure that the language (or wording) you use captures the viewer’s interest, lingers in the viewer’s memory, and convinces the viewer that your book is a must-check-out item. Below are some things to consider when producing an ad: * Language…yes, I know we are talking about creating an ad; however, it cannot read as an ad! The moment it sounds like a sales pitch, you lost the viewer. However, if you tell a long story, you will also lose the viewer. The best way is to let the images say the most, and smart pick words to deliver the punchy line. • When creating that one or two sentence message, put some extra thought into how it sounds when you read it. Is it too long? Can you deliver it with less words? Does it sound like you are pitching?• DIY and other Crafts Books. These have been always my favorites I already have a ton, but maybe it’s time for an update on my shelves. Especially on knitting, sewing, and restoring furniture books. • Finally, when you read it out loud, can you hear a rhyme or a melody? Sound bites are the best way to make a message linger on people minds, so, take the time to read it over and over, have other people read it and get feedback before you commit to it.. Whether you are creating small ads, video slides or audio ads, you must remember that you only have a few seconds to capture the interest of the ad viewer/audience. Take the time to research your market and speak to them in the language that will spark an interest to read more, they can remember where to learn more, and have a catchy sound bite that will help them spread it around to others!

BETWEEN WITCHES Susan Violante, & ANGELS Managing Editor - First Chapter Plus T N Traynor Independently Published (2020) ISBN 9780998257532 listings ...I must admit that when I picked up “Between Witches & Angels: Romance Suspense (A New Dawn)” by T N Traynor, I did because the words ‘Witches’ and ‘Angels’ were in the title, and I am hooked when any of them appear! I was not disappointed. Megan is a beginner Green witch who has been in love with her childhood best friend her entire life. However, her feelings for him are not reciprocated and she finally decides to move away and start over. She finds a job at an herb shop in a small coastal town and loves it as she not only found a new home, she also found her coven and a new love, oblivious that danger would creep up on her… Traynor’s writing style is light, fun and easy to read. Her picturesque characters are real, unique, and lovable. The villains are scary but at the same time real and believable. The story flows from start to end, and it captivated me from the beginning, making it really hard to put down.

ublic Libraries and Covid -19 – Indie Authors can Help! I have been terribly busy with my own personal tragedies during this horrible 2020, so I have missed many things in terms of how COVID has impacted the Literary world in our communities. Today I finally took the time to get caught up and found a wonderful video though c-span.org where a pane l of librarians discussed how the Corona pandemic has impacted public libraries. This event was hosted by the annual publishing industry conference, Book Expo. Click here to watch video.. What they have learned includes the discovery of deep seeded system flaws like the existent digital divide, which they can’t change on their own but maybe alleviate by strengthening partnerships with the schools to support each other, and implementing community outreach programs to complement what other organizations already have in place, as well as for the future. Below are some ideas on how to Librarians can use the help of their local Indie Authors: • Reach out to local Children Authors for Digital Story time at school libraries or public libraries during school and after school hours or even weekends. They are eager to help during their own lockdowns! • Reach out to local authors for digital book giveaways and zoom speaking events for adults as well. • Contact your local Writer Association for more ideas on how to enrich libraries literary programs through internet utilizing the awesome diverse resource local Indies can provide. If we can learn something about a virus that threatens our human connection is that it was already broken…Libraries are stepping up to repair it, Indie Authors can help to do that. If you are an Author and wish to help them please reach out to your local library. If you are a librarian and want to reach out to Indie Authors, please contact your local writer groups and organizations as well. We all can be a part of the solution!

Reader Views - Book of the Month “The Scheduler” by Joann Fastoff

Independently Published (2020) ISBN 9781087875965 Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (08/20)

n “The Scheduler” by Joann Fastoff, Howard Watson and his team of FBI agents are back in action, only this time the case involves someone that they know. CIA agent Allen Knox and FBI Special Agent Janet Forrestal’s wedding is tragically interrupted when he is shot in the chest. While he is recovering in the hospital, Howard’s team starts investigating who did this. The shot came from a military issue M-24 sniper rifle. As they discover other individuals being shot by the same rifle, they find a correlation between all five of them having been on the same tennis team in college. The suspense continues as they not only try to find out who the shooter is, but why this person is doing this. As the agents delve deeper into the story, an unexpected picture emerges, and in addition to solving this case, they will also be able to solve a missing person’s case from many years ago. I have been following the Howard Watson Intrigue series since it began fifteen years ago. In this addition, Joann Fastoff continues to thrill her readers by providing a fast moving, suspenseful intrigue in which one of the victims of the crime is a character that we already know and love. Adding to the suspense, Fastoff creates some realistic conflicts between the characters on the team that are involved. As always, the theme is based upon a real-world issue, which in this case involves the psychological impact on an adult who was sexually abused as a child. Fastoff clearly researched this issue and utilized FBI expertise to make it realistic and completely believable. I love that she investigates everything, including how the FBI would really be involved if her cases were non-fiction. While it is painful to know that the issues that Fastoff writes about are based on current real-world events, it helps me to gain understanding from the perspective of the victims who are really affected by the dramas about which she writes. While I read to escape my own reality, I appreciate the opportunity to learn about a current issue.

I highly recommend reading “The Scheduler,” and the other books in the series. Followers of Joann Fastoff will be thrilled to continue on with this story, and new fans will be delighted to discover this gem of an author. For more book reviews visit www.readerviews.com.

Author of “Writer Get

olleen M. Story inspires writers to overcome modern-day challenges

and find creative fulfillment in their work. Her first non-fiction book, Overwhelmed Writer Rescue, was named Book by Book Publicity’s Best Writing/Publishing Book in 2018, and her novel, Loreena’s Gift, was a Foreword Reviews’ INDIES Book of the Year Awards winner, among others. Her latest release, Writer Get Noticed!, was a gold-medal winner in the 2019 Reader’s Favorite Book Awards for writing and publishing, and a recent 1st-place winner in the Reader Views Literary Awards. With over 20 years in the creative industry, Colleen is the founder of Writing and Wellness (writingandwellness.com) and Writer CEO (writerceo.com)..

Hi Colleen, thank you for joining us today at Reader Views. To start, tell us a bit about Writer Get Noticed! What inspired you to write Writer Get Noticed!? In my work with writers, I’ve learned one thing: most of us don’t enjoy marketing. We love to write, edit, and see our books in print, but when it comes to trying to sell them, we cringe at the prospect and then find all kinds of ways to avoid marketing-related tasks. In today’s publishing industry, it’s up to us to build a platform and get our work noticed. Most of us try to do what others tell us to do, including things like creating Facebook and Amazon ads, conducting giveaways, offering pricing deals (for those who are self-published), planning elaborate book launches, giving readings, going on blog tours, and the like. Typically a writer may enjoy one or two of these activities, but often the effort put into marketing ends up feeling like drudgery. When that effort fails to produce a substantial amount of books sold, we can get discouraged, and those negative feelings can then bleed over into the rest of our writing work. I find this whole scenario heartbreaking, so I wanted to offer writers another option—marketing in a way that works with their personalities and strengths. Writer Get Noticed! helps writers create a marketing plan they can enjoy, as then their efforts are more likely to be successful.. “Writer Get Noticed! talks about the importance of creating an author platform. For new and emerging authors – what is an author platform? A platform is simply an author’s ability to get people’s attention. Celebrities, for instance, have successful platforms. Publishers love to publish their books because celebrities have a ready-made audience ready to buy that book. Most writers don’t have that sort of following—at least not at first. So we have to find a way to get people’s attention. We do that by creating a unique niche for ourselves and then using that niche to attract readers and others who may be interested in our work. The more people who are interested the more successful the author platform. Read the full interview with Colleen M. Story here!

Beginner’s Guide to Fantasy.

WThe fantasy genre can be a lot like many of the classic books that come to mind when discussing it: huge, complicated, and intimidating. It has a lot of subgenres that new readers may not even be aware of, and it can be a challenge to figure out where to start first. Being such a large genre has a lot of upsides; chief among them being the most obvious. There are a lot of fantasy books out there. That greatly increases the chance you’ll fall in love with at least one of them. It’s just a matter of finding your niche. Here are a few good places to start across the different subgenres of fantasy.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is a great for fans of historical fiction and romance.

It follows two different timelines. The first is set in the 1800’s and the second is in the early 1900’s. It’s a whimsical story about two magicians engaged in a competition of magic. Beautifully written and full of characters readers will quickly become attached to, The Night Circus is an easy way to gently introduce a new reader to the fantasy genre. A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab is the first novel in her Shades of Magic trilogy. It follows a magician named Kell with the ability to travel between four parallel versions of the city of London. This series is definitely a little deeper in the genre than the previous book, but not so deep as new fantasy fans will be overwhelmed or left feeling lost. Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones is a middle-grade fantasy book. The bulk of it takes place in a fictional country, but there are also a few scenes that take place in the real world. I read for the first time as an adult, and it quickly became one of my favorite middle-grade books. Besides being a great starting place for fantasy readers, Howl’s Moving Castle is just a charming and refreshing read. The Magicians by Lev Grossman is a little different than my other recommendations. It follows a young man named Quentin as he attends a college for magicians. The first half of this novel reads almost like a slice-of-life story about college as Quentin studies there, albeit a very strange college. By the time the novel gets deeper into the magic system and fantastical elements, the reader is already drawn in and committed to finishing the story. There are two more books in the series, but the first one is by far the best. There are plenty of other wonderful books you can read to jump into the fantasy genre. These ones are just some of my recommendations for anyone who is a little intimidated or lost in the genre. What was the first fantasy novel you read? Do you think it was a good place to start exploring the genre from?

ove the analogy/metaphor of music being compared to business. There are lots of similarities, as you show us. Reader Views Kids - Book of the Month “Cinderella’s Other Shoe” by Philippa Rae

Illustrated by Tevin Hansen Handersen Publishing LLC (2017) ISBN 9781087875965 Reviewed by Maddie (age 13) for Reader Views Kids (06/2020)

I

’ve read alternate versions of the Cinderella story, but I’ve never read anything like Philippa Rae’s version, “Cinderella’s Other Shoe!” The story is similar to the original story in that Cinderella has an evil stepmother and two evil stepsisters. The sisters are mean to Cinderella and she’s basically just the maid. There’s a ball held by the Prince. Cinderella is visited by a fairy godmother who equips her with a gown and carriage and the whole “better get home before midnight” speech. The difference in this story is that the tale is narrated from the perspective of one of Cinderella’s shoes!

I love this take on the classic fairy tale! Has anyone ever considered the shoe’s point of view? It’s so unique, and Cinderella’s shoes are actually sneakers that get turned into glass slippers! Philippa Rae is a great writer who tells a creative tale that is modern and current. The pictures really do add a lot to the story as well because you can see that the Prince and Cinderella are like today’s teens and they just want to dance and have fun. They also show how gross the evil stepsisters are and add drama to the story. Cinderella’s right shoe is named Stomp and is the one who does all the talking in the story. The left shoe is named Buckle. It’s funny that the shoes talk and have personalities and are sisters, and because they are sisters they have sister rivalry. But when Buckle gets lost on Cinderella’s way home from the ball Stomp is worried about her sister.

It’s also hilarious and even though the pictures suggest it is for younger kids, I think it will be enjoyed by readers of all ages. As a teen, I enjoyed it and will pass it to my younger sister next! Sisters of all ages will like “Cinderella’s Other Shoe” by Philippa Rae For more Kids book reviews visit www.readerviewskids.com.
