Susan’s Reads

y summer reading list thanks to Corona!… - I don’t know about you, but every summer I binge on fantasy, mystery, and creative memoirs plus a romance here and there books as I relax by the pool and lake my days off, or while vacationing at the beach. This year however am finding myself tired of the summer reads, and August is not even over yet! After much reflection I am realize now that I have been reading my summer list since I have been on lock down since November 2019…yes, before even Corona because of my mother’s cancer treatments. I overloaded on Fantasy through Netflix as well, as TV has been taken over by my also fed up of being home husband, who also needs a break from his regular reads. So, I have decided to switch my summer read to one that might motivate me to embark on home projects or that will inspire some home activities to make this lock down go by faster and fun. Below are some things I’ve been thinking of. • Cookbooks! Yes I know we have youtube.com cooking videos and such, but I don’t know, I love cooking with a glass of wine and music, so books work better for me. Plus, if I want my hubby to join in the cooking, having the book works better as we can chat while we cook as well. • Gardening Books or Magazines! I love gardening, and in fact have been gardening all throughout this lockdown. Now I have spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, onions, leeks, the spaghetti squash is coming out, the papaya tree is growing, and lots of roses and wildflowers. But I would like some inspirations on decorating the garden and patio. Yeah, a Garden, or even travel book with lots od nature pictures would be awesome. • DIY and other Crafts Books. These have been always my favorites I already have a ton, but maybe it’s time for an update on my shelves. Especially on knitting, sewing, and restoring furniture books. • Finally, I need to read a book on training dachshunds! I have three little monsters that are making this lockdown loud, annoying, and exhausting! Especially when I try to read! . Well, this is my alternate summer reading thanks to Corona virus. What’s yours? If you are an author of any of the above genres I and are looking for a review check out ww.readerviews.com. I check the pending list in search for reads to review constantly, send them over!

FORTY GAVELS Soderstrom, Soderstrom, Stevens, AND Burt CWS Publishing (2018) ISBN 9780998257532

...As an immigrant and coming from immigrant parents, I love to read about other immigrants who began in poverty and were able to build a life that they are proud of and leave a legacy for their successors. In the case of Reuben Soderstrom, his legacy was left for a nation and even nations. I loved this collection... “Forty Gavels, The Life of Reuben Soderstrom and the Illinois AFL-CIO - Volume I, II and III” by Carl W. Soderstrom MD, Robert W. Soderstrom, Chris M. Stevens, Andrew W. Burt is an impeccable recollection of an American pillar in history. His life is his legacy for all of us; it is informative, and captivating - a jewel for anyone’s library. I recommend it as a Five-Star-Must-Read and a piece of American history to keep. Well done!

NEW 2020 RELEASES ur Books in a Foreign Language? Why Not! With globalization (which started officially but was happening forever, in my opinion, with the establishment of the UN) the cultural trade took a life of its own along with the economy trade. Currently almost in every country of the

world (could be all) a second language is not just preferred it is many times needed! What this tells you in the world of books is that a translation of your book can sell not just in that language’s country but in many others, especially with our current internet technology. So why not tap to those markets ourselves instead of selling our rights? In my own case for example, I focused on my own background, and book’s setting to determine what language I wanted to translate my book to. I translated “Innocent War” first in Italian to target the audience from the story’s setting and topic; and am working on a Spanish one to target my South American background in Venezuela where I was born and raised. But there were other things I needed to consider: •

I decided to publish the book only in digital format to market it in Italy and Italian crowed in

the US, however I should have done some research on the format preference of the audience I was targeting before committing only to one format. •

I should have also found out which social media platform was the most popular for my target

market and base my marketing on that one. •

I also believe, it would have gone better for me if I had localized a publishing platform from Italy

to publish the Italian translation. As I found out Mondadori which is the biggest traditional publisher in Italy also has a Print on Demand platform. I would have probably sold more books if I had used them and went for paperbacks through them. No one knows everything on their first time around, but as we try new things we learn and get better at it. Having your book available on different languages is a plus not only if you want to market them yourselves directly to readers, but also if you want to sell to foreign publishers…who knows maybe it will become a best seller in another country before it takes in the U.S.!

nterview with Sharon D. Ballentine BEHIND LIGHTNING” - By Sheri Hoyte

S

– Author of “A LOOK

haron D. Ballentine started reading at an early age and always

knew she wanted to write. But it wasn’t until her junior year in college that she took a fiction-writing class and a poetry writing class. She claims her first short story was crap but went on to publish two poems in college. Sharon graduated from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville and University of Houston. She retired as a college professor. Sharon currently lives in Houston, Texas with her family. A Look Behind Lightning is her debut novel..

Hi Sharon, thank you for joining us today at Reader Views. To start, tell us what is A Look Behind Lightning about? A Look Behind Lightning is about a young pretty high school English teacher who is frustrated with her students’ poor behavior and academic performance, so she figures out a way to make nighttime visitations and plant subliminal suggestions into their heads to change their behavior. Only a Watcher, who is looking for a human soul attaches himself to her. His entry into their lives lead to a struggle for life, death, and their souls. “Write what you know” is deemed as almost sacred advice when writing a novel. How much of what you know did you incorporate into your novel? 35 years ago, an elderly fellow asked a friend and me to help him look for Civil War gold he thought was buried on his farm. We said, “why not?” and had a great day on his farm listening to his stories and searching for gold. That might seem unusual, but it’s just another day in a Mississippi law office, where the unusual, eccentric and even outrageous are everyday occurrences. How much of what you know did you incorporate into your novel? One day while in my Fresh Comp. class, I discovered that hardly anyone had done his homework. I said, “What do you want me to do? Do a drive by teaching?” We all laughed, but someone said, “You could come by my house. My mom will even cook your dinner.” Then they all had a discussion of the dinner they’d cook for my visitation. I said to them, “You know this would make a good story,” so the idea for A Look Behind Lightning was born. Read the full interview with Sharon D. Ballentine here!

H

ow I Jumped into Nonfiction.

When I think of a nonfiction book, I picture a massive hardback with single-spaced lines and a tiny font size. Walking through the nonfiction section at the bookstore, the bookcases are always stuffed to capacity. Not only do they take up a ton of shelf space, but they can take a long time to read as well. As a kid, I flew through any novel I could get my hands on. Reading is something that I loved and could do for hours. Reading nonfiction specifically, however, was a different story. I would read what I had to in school, but during my free time, it was always a fantasy story I reached for. I didn’t have much interest in nonfiction until after I graduated high school. As I wasn’t taking classes anymore, I had to find another way to continue learning new things. Nonfiction can take an in-depth look at an incredibly specific topic, or it can be a little vaguer and offer a more general overview. Like fiction, there is a wide range of subgenres to cover any interest you may have. My initial introduction to nonfiction came through longform journalism. The pieces I was reading got longer and longer until eventually I hit book length. From there, I started exploring books written by authors outside of journalism. Like with any genre that I’m brand new to, I had to ease myself into it. Currently, my main areas of interest are politics and pirates. Right now, I’m reading Under the Black Flag: The Romance and Reality of Life Among the Pirates by David Cordingly. Nonfiction still isn’t my favorite genre. It’s too broad of a category. I enjoy the books that teach more about the subjects I’m already interested in. I don’t tend to pick up any that cover topics I don’t have any prior knowledge on. That’s something I’d like to be a little better about. If I keep reading about the same topics over and over again, eventually it will grow repetitive and I’ll start to dislike them. One of my goals for next year is going to be to read at least one nonfiction book a month. Two that I’m really looking forward to are Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson and The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery. They’ve been sitting in my To Be Read pile for at least a year (probably longer, if I’m being honest). Do you have any nonfiction books you want to read, but are still a little intimidated by?
