...Readers will relate with her as the topics of her poetry are genuine and real. It is hard for me to pick a favorite, as I honestly found each one to be a favorite, but here I quote an example to visualize what I found: “Breathtaking Touch of petals Heavenly bliss The moon sparkles Never ending caress Passion without words Sealed with one wish Time stops for the seconds That we have kissed.” ...This is definitely a book to go back to from time to time!

nd so, I Write… - Six years ago, we brought my parents from Florida to Texas and moved them in to live with us. At that time, my two daughters came back home from college, and so suddenly, we went from empty nesters living in our downsized home to an overflowing inappropriate nest crowded with three generations. Did I mention that I work full time from my home office? Yet, we stuck it out and eventually within two years both of my daughters found their own home. Since then My parents, my husband and I have been sharing the same home along with my three rescued puppies. Needless to say, I have been collecting stories worth a reality show throughout this experience! In all though, I have been loving it. Of course I get tired sometimes, as we do push our buttons back and forth, but having my parents with me has truly been rewarding as they got to know me as an adult, and I had to get to know them as Third age toddlers. This past November we found a bigger house to accommodate my parent’s needs, and as we were moving into the new place my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. After 8 months, give and take, she finally passed almost three weeks ago. I watched my mother die June 19th…it was the most horrible thing I have ever had to do...It was the most beautiful thing I have ever done for anyone. She did her hospice at home thanks to Corona, which meant that I was her full-time nurse, and hospice visited her to check on her and make adjustments to her palliative care as needed once a week, as well as help with her baths three times a week. My life was filled with my mother’s needs for 8 months, and now since our Big Goodbye, I find myself lost. I still have my father to take care of, my husband, my girls who call me and visit all the time, my puppies, my work…yet the emptiness swallows everything as I go through a task list with no purpose. My mother is gone. Everything I did for her seems useless now. Where before I was lacking in time, it now drowns me. The biggest fear of losing her no longer exists. I am lost, and do not know how to go back to whatever routine I can manage, and so I write. I write and let it all out. I scream, I cry, I stand silent but as I write, I put it all out there for others to read, to get a glimpse of what love really is…the giving your heart, your time, your strength, your health, your everything only to see it go all away. And so, I write hoping my words take away my pain. So that I can find myself again…find her, who I reluctantly let go almost a month ago, now free and healthy in my heart, in my memory, find her within who I have become. In Memory of Vana, Mother, Grandmother, Wife, and friend.

iterary Awards Fees...IFor a while now, I have been seeing on social media comments and

questions about the Literary Awards fees. This week I decided to explain where those fees go, at least in the Reader Views Literary Awards. Contrary to popular belief, Literary Awards,

if ethical and done properly, are not a money-making service. Most, if not all the fees go to judges’ fee, shipping, prizes, and overhead expenses. Take for example Reader Views Literary Awards. The regular entry fee is $89.00 which includes the following: So,for example Reader Views Literary Awards. The regular entry fee is $89.00 which includes the following: 1) Book review written and first judging line score by judge/reviewer – In order for this to happen, the submitted title’s books must be received, logged, payment processed, assigned to a judge, and shipped. The costs for this process and shipping materials and postage are covered by the fee so from $89.00, that leaves roughly $54.00. 2) Book review editing and publishing, recording scores and tabulation, leaves roughly $24.00. 3) Correspondence with each author, 2nd and third line judging to pick winners, production and distribution, certificate pdf’s and award seal jpg costs more in time and labor than the $24.00 left. Yet, Reader Views has maintained almost the same fee for 15 years by revising mostly the extra category to make ends meet when some of the cost’s prices go up.Please note that this break down does not cover the costs of the website and website maintenance, nor promotion, nor special awards offered to winners. So why do we keep investing in the Awards program? There are few reasons: 1) The main one has to do with our mission to get Indie Authors books out there. We genuinely believe that people should be able to choose what they want to read and not just what few consider marketable or valuable to their own agendas. The Awards help us put the best of the year out there for our audience to find by giving them credibility. 2) We also consider the Awards an instrument that motivates Indie writers to produce better books and put an end to the idea that only traditional publishing can offer quality product in the book Industry. 3) Finally, the Awards also serves as a platform to connect Reader Views with new Authors and also to connect with readers and other colleagues in the Industry and create a networking community to help each other thrive. We have been passionate about our mission since the beginning. The Awards is the place where all of us here at Reader Views let their hair down as we all look forward to collaboration. The judging process makes us feel we might just find the next best seller, or that our score will help a book we loved to be found for the next block buster movie. It is just where we get instant gratification, and when you love what you do, a little bit of free work for a book we loved can sound better than few more $. nterview with James D. Bell – Author of “Maximilian’s Treasure” - By Sheri Hoyte

J

ames Bell

is an award-winning author and retired Judge who received the highest bar association approval ratings ever given to a Mississippi Circuit or County Judge. He is listed in Preeminent Lawyers, Outstanding Lawyers of America and Top 100 Attorneys of North America. He is the author of two novels, Vampire Defense and Maximilian’s Treasure. His short story, The Adventures of Sherlock Hound, was published in Mardi Allen’s collection, D og Stories for the Soul, alongside stories from Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Willie Morris and others.

The son of a Choctaw mother and a Mississippi businessman, Judge Bell is devoted to his wife, Joanne. They live near Jackson, Mississippi and have four children. Judge Bell returned to law practice but is frequently called back to the bench by the Mississippi Supreme Court for short term assignments.

Hi James, Welcome to Reader Views! Tell us, what is Maximilian’s Treasure about? In Maximilian’s Treasure rumors of hidden gold instigate a battle over possession of a Choctaw family farm. Two young lawyers, John Brooks and Jackson Bradley, agree to help the family keep their farm. Early legal success prompts the drive-by murder of the patriarch of the family. The grandson chases the suspects whose bodies are found on the farm, scalped. At the same time, clues to a vast treasure are found on the farm. Jackson, pursued by fortune seekers, adventurers, an exotic beauty and a homicidal maniac follows the clues to a Caribbean reef and then to the Chiapas jungle. John stays behind to defend the grandson and continue the fight for the farm. His efforts are complicated by arson, murder and the realization he lost his one true love. The adventures of John and Jackson rush toward an intertwined triple climax that could shake the world. What was your inspiration for the story? Can you share the story behind the story? 35 years ago, an elderly fellow asked a friend and me to help him look for Civil War gold he thought was buried on his farm. We said, “why not?” and had a great day on his farm listening to his stories and searching for gold. That might seem unusual, but it’s just another day in a Mississippi law office, where the unusual, eccentric and even outrageous are everyday occurrences. Read the full interview with James D. Bell here!

ringing It All Together: Reviewing Short Story Collections.

I love short story collections. They are compulsively easy to read, far more so than novels. I also like to think of them as introductions to authors I haven’t read before. Short stories are a great way to sample a writer’s style. Anthologies of them can be tricky to get right. Some are straight forward collections of a single author’s work. I tend to only buy these if I’m already familiar with the author through their other work, whether that be a novel or a separate short story that I read and enjoyed. Those can be a lot of fun, but my favorite collections are the ones based around a specific theme. The theme can be something as broad as a genre or as specific as a retelling, like an anthology exclusively featuring new versions of Alice in Wonderland. Collections showcasing many different authors can face a unique set of obstacles, some of which affect the scores given by reviewers. No two stories can be too similar and each one must be able to hold its own amongst the others. Speaking as a reviewer, I can’t only look at each piece individually, though that is certainly an important part of it. Each contribution needs to bring something unique that ultimately results in making the entire collection stronger. If half of the stories are excellent and the other half are terrible, I can’t give that collection a five-star rating. When assigning stars, I try to find the average amongst all the stories. One short story collection I read recently, Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Winters edited by Sarena Ulibarri, is a great example of a well-balanced themed anthology with a diverse set of stories from an equally diverse group of contributors. Each piece was about a world set in a deep, dangerous winter brought on by extreme climate change. The authors took the theme and not only crafted vivid, fascinating stories with it, but also used it to explore other important modern day issues, such as transphobia. A short story collection will only be great if all of its individual parts are great. While they can be difficult to review sometimes, they are definitely worth it. They’re also a wonderful tool to help a reader out of a reading slump. It can be a lot easier to devour a dozen short stories than one novel. There’s a short story collection out there for everyone. What are some of your favorites?
