EDITORIAL

B Susan Violante Managing Editor

ooks as Legacies - This past week we received the horrible news that my mother is terminal ill. Since then she has been in a rush mode to say and share everything about her with us. Not just about her life and life lesson, but also her recipes, pictures, crafts…it has been a storm of information, heirlooms, and one on one moments. I struggle seeing her newfound need to transfer herself to our memories before she cannot communicate anymore and wonder why we didn’t use our time together to make sure we recorded her legacy in a book. We are used to seeing autobiographies and memoirs, but the small things that we remember by the ones we love are never mentioned. My daughters came with the idea of recording her stories along with her legacies and heirlooms by creating a Legacy book for the family. Can hardly wait to see what that looks like! Have you ever thought about creating your own Legacy Book?

FLY TO ME Ellie Hansen All God’s Creatures Publishing (2019) ISBN 9780578447391

...The concept that all life is made from the same love light that makes us, and that our pets souls are always with us, is a concept that many of us who were lucky enough to have experienced the unconditional love of a pet knows and accepts with our eyes closed. The way this message and concept is presented to readers, is through a hardcover picture book formatted into eight short chapters which take readers through the author’s journey of life with her pet, grief, and enlightenment. I loved “Fly to Me” by Ellie Hansen, and find it to be five-star heartwarming, thought provoking beautiful piece of literature to keep, gift and always revisit.

NEW 2020 RELEASES igital Books – Life Savers!...I don’t know about you, for many of us not being able to go to a library or bookstore to get new reads is one of the biggest downsides of being home. For me just checking out what is out there and browse different books over coffee has been

my therapy for as long as I can remember. Honestly, I have not really missed any other store as going shopping has never been a fin time for me. You are probably wondering why on earth a book reviewer would go to a bookstore, when we get them on the mail! I sometimes wonder, but there is something about holding, and checking out different reads surrounded by shelves. The aroma of books and coffee cannot be replaced by anything else. So, the other day I made myself an espresso, sat on porch listening to Pandora music, and decided to check out my nook store, and amazon for digital books. Well, it did the trick for one and a half hour I was lost in my bubble, almost no different than when I visited the library or bookstore! I ended up buying a couple of digital books and even found that my favorite Author Richard Bach had come out with a Book two of my favorite title back in 2013! Today I received the paperback as I bought it on the spot! With all the craziness around me , and the cabin fever syndrome, the fact that there were digital books (at better prices than the hard copy) available for me to just click and read something different made the difference in my moment of desperation. This is something we currently can reach out to for our mental health during a pandemic…people in the past didn’t even have that. So today I am grateful for technology, grateful for all the Authors who publish digital, grateful I am living in this Era where digital books, movies, and music can be life savers. How is technology helping you through this pandemic?

nterview with Mike Murphey Sheri Hoyte

M

– Author of “Section Roads”

- By

. ike Murphey

is a native of eastern New Mexico and spent almost thirty years as an award-winning newspaper journalist in the Southwest and Pacific Northwest. Following his retirement from the newspaper business, he and his wife Nancy entered in a seventeen-year partnership with the late Dave Henderson, allstar centerfielder for the Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. Their company produced the A’s and Mariners adult baseball Fantasy Camps.

They also have a partnership with the Roy Hobbs adult baseball organization in Fort Myers, Florida. Mike loves fiction, cats, baseball and sailing. He splits his time between Spokane, Washington, and Phoenix, Arizona, where he enjoys life as a writer and old-man baseball player.

Section Roads is your debut novel, but you’ve been writing for many years, including a career as a journalist. What called you to dive into the world of fiction? Section Roads is actually the fourth novel I’ve written, but the first to be published. I suspect every newspaper reporter aspires to write a novel and I was certainly no different. While I was working, though, I found all sorts of excuses not to sit down and write on my own time. I made fits and starts but couldn’t seem to sustain anything beyond short stories. As one more excuse, I convinced myself I did not have the novelist gene. When I turned sixty, I decided to find out once and for all. I vowed I would write 500 words a day—good, bad or indifferent—no matter what. Eventually, that became a novel—although not a very good one. But I’d developed the discipline to do the work. From there, I dedicated myself to learning the craft of fiction.! What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book? I learned that every novel that wants to be funny needs a Slartybartfarst. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the works of Douglas Adams, Slartybartfarst is an off-the-wall character in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. My Slartybartfarst is Weard Ward, who came out of nowhere. One day I was writing, and he just showed up. At first, he was just this guy at the side of a road, but he worked his way into being a central plot element. A number of reviewers have said Weard is their favorite character. evising a Review Strategy.

Reviewing books is a much easier task if you have a plan of attack before even opening the book. It provides a specific direction to take your review in. There are a lot of different ways to create a reviewing strategy, and not everybody likes to plan out their reviews. I don’t think there is one answer that works for everybody and it takes some experimenting to find what works for you. Here is a look into how I approach reviews! I look at five main areas of a novel: the characters, setting, plot, pacing, and writing. I try to divide my notes into sections with these categories in mind, though they sometimes end up jumbled anyway. As I’m reading, I jot down anything that catches my eye and quotations that I like. Once I’m finished, I assign a rating of one through five to each category, then average them together to find the overall rating of the book. I usually end up with a decimal, and that gets rounded up or down as is appropriate. After I find the overall rating, it’s time to start writing the review itself. I’ve always used notes, but it’s only been in the past few months that I’ve begun using outlines. I use the term outline loosely here. I do my best writing when I have a question I need to answer, so I pose questions to myself about the book, and then organize the answers to those questions into paragraphs. My reviews don’t really start to look like reviews until I’m revising them. If you’re working with a word limit, I find it easier to write as much as you can and then start cutting it down. Cutting things in the revision process works better for me than adding them. Reviews should always cover both strengths and weaknesses. No book is completely perfect, and no book is completely terrible. Even in stories I don’t particularly like, there’s usually at least one aspect of them that I enjoyed, whether it be setting, a specific character, or the author’s writing style. If you want a wellrounded review, it’s important to highlight both these negative and positive aspects. features, that’s right, a castle that moves. Home to an odd wizard, his apprentice, and a fire demon, join protagonist Sophie as she befriends this unusual cast while the castle wanders around the kingdom. Another wonderful children’s book, this is a great story to share with your children.. As a reader, I want a review to be engaging and informative. Tell me exactly what you thought about the book without too much dancing around the bush. I value bluntness in the reviews I read, so I try to incorporate it into my own. This goes for both written reviews and recorded ones. I love listening to podcasted and filmed reviews. While I only work with written ones, there’s a lot to learn in experiencing them across different mediums. If you want to improve in writing your own reviews, I suggest trying to read or listen to as many different reviewers from as many different sources as you can! It can take time to find a strategy you’re comfortable with, but that’s okay. It’s all part of the process. .
