orona Pandemic – Books Can Help You Hang in There…I was debating whether to write about Corona, but how can we ignore it? I have many close friends and relatives in Italy and as I call each one to make sure they are safe; my heart feels close to imploding when I hear firsthand what they are going through. What comforting words can you give someone who tells you that there were 250 deaths in one day in their home country? I wanted to slap myself when I told my cousin just hunker down and grab a good book. What? Really Susan? Is that all you can say? What about wash your hands, keep your children indoors, shop online? I don’t know, anything that makes sense! I thought. But then my cousin replied:

Susan Violante Managing Editor

“What a great idea Susan, Thank you! I always complain I don’t have time to read anymore, and the TV and internet are filled with horrible news. I will grab a great book I’ve been wanting to read tonight and try to take my mind off what’s going on.” As I pray for my loved ones and the world and do my part following the guidelines given to the community to try to slow it down, I also hope you find a comforting book that will help you escape the pandemic, if only for a little while. Please be safe you all…

SAVAGERY J.C. Mehta Airlie Press (2019) ISBN 9781950404001

I“Savagery” by J.C. Mehta is a collection of thoughts, feelings and life experiences shared by the Author through her unique indigenous ethnic voice. Her life experience is unique and far from my own. Her voice showed me a world very different from mine as an Italian born and raised in Venezuela. Yet it also felt familiar like my conversations with my spiritual Gojiran native sister who grew up with me in flesh and spirit during my upbringing in Venezuela. I feel grateful to have read “Savagery” and recommend as a Five Star collection that will bring insight to all who reads it!

W

hen Kids Review Children’s Books ...Many children book writers believe

that because they were a kid once they are capable of writing for today’s kids. Sounds easy enough, however, that couldn’t be farther from reality. Kids are the toughest audience you can target. Children books authors need to realize that the human brain currently develops differently than how it developed when we were kids, some of us anyway. Thanks to technology, a child’s brain will look differently than a child’s brain of 20 years ago, and thus it works differently as well. Their attention span is shorter, the way they assimilate new information is different, and their environment is different! Just think about it. Most of us had only the real world and television to assimilate – now kids are bombarded at every different angle from a variety of different worlds. Virtual games are one world – another world is the internet which brings news and information from different countries that look like totally different worlds altogether! Plus, movies, and what surrounds them. This is why we have nurtured our Reader Views Kids website since 2005, where children books are reviewed by age appropriate kids for each book to be reviewed. Here are some things to consider when looking for kids’ reviewers: * Kids are brutal. They have no filter and are extremely honest. So be ready for it. Maybe running your manuscript by kids before publishing would help you get better reviews once published. * They are smart, and they expect smart writing. For kids to be interested in your fiction, fantasy, etc., your book’s world needs to make sense and follow a convincing logic, just like adult books. * They expect instant gratification. Thanks to the internet, current kids’ brains are used to speed. They are not patient and will not wait a few chapters for the action, suspense or any climatic moment in the plot to begin. * They are still kids, so relating to what surrounds them needs to be relatable…this is also true with the books they read.

Remember, in the end having a kid review your book is always a good idea because your review will come straight from your target market. However, do not under estimate their ability to find errors nor their skills to express their honest opinions. And do your homework when writing for the children’s audience. For more information about our kid’s reviews visit www.readerviewskids.com. For more information on how we help Authors and Readers visit www.bookbybookpublicity.com.

nterview with F. Scott Kimmich – Author of “The Magdalene Malediction” - By Sheri Hoyte

F

. Scott Kimmich

was born in Indianapolis and is an honors graduate of Haverford College. He is a winner of the French Government Scholarship and taught English conversation at the high school level in Chartres, France. After a career in advertising, Kimmich is retired and lives with his wife Kate Tepper in Norwalk, CT. They have 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Kimmich is the author of the Ordeal by Fire trilogy, a trilogy of novels based on the Albigensian Crusades. The Magdalene Malediction is the final book in the trilogy.

Hi Scott, thank you for joining us today at Reader Views! Tells us, what is The Magdalene Malediction about? It is the last book in a trilogy – Ordeal by Fire – set during the Albigensian Crusade, when French invaders goaded by Pope Innocent III descended on the lands to the south intent on exterminating its “heretical” inhabitants and seizing their property. Three generations of a Provençal family attempt to resist the French onslaught. In the Magdalene Malediction, the cousins Odon and Rainier along with the beautiful Miranda and the son of Robin Hood are captured by corsairs on their way back to Provence and end up in Moorish Spain, where Miranda loses her heart to a Moorish potentate. After attempting to return home, they become enmeshed in a deadly war between the Moors and the crusading Jacme I of Aragon with tragic consequences. Home at last, they find that their parents have been condemned and the story hurtles towards its end. What is it about this era that fascinates you? Centuries before Hitler, the Church encouraged genocide. Thousands of so-called heretics were burned alive. The Albigensian Crusade was a lesson that went unheeded and has been re-enacted many times since. It also gave rise to the Inquisition which was the model for East Germany’s Stazis. Finally, the eclipse of a language and its culture. is like the boom of a doomsday drum. The decline and fall of the troubadours were like withered flowers set on a gravestone. I am a hopeless romantic. Read the full interview with F. Scott Kimmich!

S

hould You Do a Reading Challenge?

I am a Goodreads fiend. It’s my favorite way of keeping track of how many books I’ve read, and it’s great for making lists of books you might want to read one day. For anyone who doesn’t know, Goodreads is a website that allows readers to connect with authors and other readers. There are book giveaways, discussion boards, author Q & A’s, and a ton of other features. One of this website’s most popular features is the Yearly Reading Challenge. The Reading Challenge is a personal goal that users can set for themselves. They pledge to read a certain number of books and then use Goodreads to track their progress and tell them if they’re ahead of schedule, on track, or falling behind. It’s a fun way to read more books and motivate yourself to keep reading if you fall into a slump. For my Reading Challenge this year, I pledged to read 50 books. I’m currently 9 books into my challenge and one book ahead of schedule. At the end of the year, you can review your year in books, and Goodreads will tell you how many pages you read across all of your books read for that year, what your longest and shortest books were, as well as your most and least popular reads, among other statistics. It’s a great way to reflect on your reading experiences for the year! Sometimes Reading Challenges can be stressful though. Personally, I’m a very competitive person, especially against myself. There have been years in the past when I’ve fallen behind and completely given up. I’ve definitely gotten better with sticking to my pledge in the past year or two. If it’s reaching the end of the year and your goal seems hopelessly faraway, here are a few strategies you can try! You’ve fallen into a slump. Nothing you pick up seems engaging. Should you even bother continuing with your challenge? I tend to fall into a reading slump half-way through the year. One thing that helps me pull myself out of it is reading shorter books. I tend to read a lot of fantasy, and most fantasy novels are long and brick-like. Reading a few slimmer volumes can help me pick up the pace and reignite my interest in reading. You realize that the number of books you’ve chosen is either too high or too low. You’ll either blow by the goal without any challenge at all, or you’ve chosen something that you are certain you will never attain. It’s possible to change your Goodreads challenge at any time. You can lower it and raise it as much as you need to. No need to fret! It can take a little while to find the right challenge for you. And finally: What happens if I fail my Reading Challenge? You can try again next year!

What are some of your Goodreads Reading Challenges?
