34 Conor Mitchel author of “Lockdown” In September of 2018, nearly 11 years after his first visit to the city, he would travel 3000 miles over four days by train to his new home of San Francisco, CA. Although Conor was unsure what he was so drawn to the city for expressly, he knew he had a purpose of serving, and San Francisco was the key to this purpose. With all he had experienced with COVID-19 and the last several months of his time in the city, documenting one of the most historical times in world history could very well have been his calling.

April, a month of purification and rebirth In nature we are all familiar with the “circle of life” when speaking about all living creature’s journey in this world. But the facts are that all things in on earth and beyond go through a journey that starts with birth, continues transformation, and ends with what we believe to be death. But there is more to this journey. In fact, this cycle happens over an over during our lives as well as in all aspects of our lives. Just like our seasons, and our bodies our lives go through a cycle of beginning, cleansing and transformation or end. Because after each end there is a rebirth. This journey manifests in all areas of our lives. School, work, belief, science, health, love, relationships, family…you name it. Everything has a beginning, growth, cleansing and transformation. In Nature, we see it with Spring, Summer, Fall and winter. So, it is not a surprise that in April the big belief systems celebrate Passover, Easter, and Ramadan so that can reflect, cleanse, and transform to a better version of ourselves. I wish all of you a wonderful spring season. May your own rebirth after the winter flourish a strong and beautiful new you!

FIRST CHAPTER PLUS

Avoiding Overkill There is a famous quote: “There’s no need to repeat yourself; I ignored you just fine the first time.” Well, when it comes to writing, authors should remember this quote but alter it just a tad. You see, after you’ve said something once in your novel, saying it in every chapter from then on out is NOT necessary. In fact, you’ve gone from having the readers’ attention to putting them to sleep. Recently I’ve been reviewing a few and editing a few books (three in a row for the latter, actually) and found the same editorial issue happening in each and every one. Repetition is something an author can get “stuck” in when they are creating their book. In fact, it’s one of the easiest things to do; when the author is watching scenes play out in their mind and they pick a particular “setting” where all their characters happen to be while the sci-fi, mystery, romance, drama, or adventure is playing out, they end up repeating themselves a lot. There are two directions authors seem to choose in order to offer up descriptions for their readers: (1) They find a location “look” they like, and then proceed to constantly tell readers what that look is; or (2) They use as many synonyms as they possibly can find in order to speak the same words without actually doing so. Hint: Neither of these work. In fact, I can only read that the “trees in the forest were like sentinels, and their mangled roots like the hands of the dead reaching up to the sky” once. When I start reading it on every page (and, yes, when I did a count that one exact line appeared 2,714 times in one manuscript), I start to roll my eyes and wish that I was reading something else. Anything else, actually. The author hit the nail on the proverbial head the first time he told me what was close to his characters; once I witnessed those trees for the next hundred pages, the memorable line turned as humdrum as algebra class. (My apologies if you’re a die-hard mathematician.) The other direction, the synonym mongers, understand repetition to a point. They learned a long time ago that the word “said” becomes overly annoying. As a reader, I know this is dialog the second you put quotes around it, and I’m only going to be confused if the room has many people talking at once and I’m trying to figure out who’s who; only then would I need some direction about who “said” what. But the English language, being the most difficult one to learn, has a ton of words that mean basically the same thing but just draw on a different emotion.

10

FIRST CHAPTER PLUS

Therefore, the characters can say something, but they can also exclaim, plead, cry, reply, shoot back, shout, yell…and the list goes on. Although an author doesn’t need to rely on just “said” to get their characters through, they also don’t need to go into overkill when it comes to the presentation of the scene. Why is that? Because, yet again, the reader is going to grow bored. This is yet another reason for that second set of eyes. Editors can be expensive and can even be bad (which means research is most definitely needed when finding one for yourself), but what that second set of eyes gifts the author is absolutely necessary to make your book the best it can be. You want that fan base to grow, so make sure when you write a seriously memorable line that you don’t write it a million times. If you do, I promise you, it will go from perfect to completely ignored. After all, if Rhett had told Scarlett, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn” more than once back in 1936, no Pulitzer Prize would’ve been won, and no one would still repeat it in 2022. Which….yes, we most definitely do! by Amy Lignor “Being the daughter of a research librarian, Amy was hooked on books from the moment she could open one. She has been the editor of Suspense Magazine for over a decade; she also reviews and interviews artists and authors for various websites, while continuously helping up-and-coming authors by editing their work. Do Indies Make The Most of Amazon’s Author Central? Susan Violante IIt has been brought to my attention that many Indie authors do not know about Amazon’s Author Central. If you don't know about it, it's time to get informed about the whole world behind the scenes of Amazon and take advantage of it. If you know about it but do not keep it updated, is time to do so. What will it do for you? It's another place to let potential buyers know about you and your books. You can create an author page that includes your bio, bibliography, author photo and feeds from your blog and your Twitter posts. You can also add your book video and advertise events. And, you can even add Editorial Reviews. But, there is more. You can get Sales Figures, Rank History, and interact with the audience right where they go to purchase books. I really like the Sales Info because it is one simple way to track sales if I've done any promotions during a specific time. As with all Sales Info the information isn't entirely accurate but it's close enough to see what movement you've had on your book. This is also a place you can compare the sales records to the records your publisher sends you during royalty reporting. As well, if you have more than one book all the information is in one central place, and you don't have to go from book page to book page. Author Central also allows you to add all books you have published and are listed in Amazon on one page. You do this by logging in, searching for your books and just clicking on the “add book” button. If you are wondering how potential readers will find your Author Page just go to a book listing on Amazon.com and click on author's name (at the top, under the title and next to "author.") This will take you to the Profile Page of the author. The Author central complements the Author website but is not a substitute. However, it's important to have your Profile Page updated and available to those that do shop Amazon, so it is a must for Indies! Check it out!

Featured Authors Marcus A. Nannini MARCUS A. NANNINI Mr. Nannini began his writing career when he published his own newspaper in the sixth grade and charged 25 cents per school quarter for the privilege of reading the only handwritten copy of each edition. The newspaper was a modest success. During his undergraduate years, he was a paid newspaper reporter and worked three semesters as the Research Assistant to journalism professor Richard Stocks Carlson, Ph.D. Nannini’s newspaper reporting paid for his senior year of undergrad. Carlson advised him to always write as if his readers have an 8th-grade education or less, something he took with a grain of salt. This is the story of an American C-47 ‘Dakota’ pilot who earned three Air Medals, seven Battle Stars and flew twenty-seven combat missions during the Second World War. Around midnight, in early April 1945, he was sent on a secret mission to fly to a point near Nuremberg, which was behind enemy lines at the time. It was necessary for him to locate an empty meadow in the dark, land, load a party of US soldiers and their captives, and then take-off again. He pulled it off. Among those prisoners was Franz von Pappen, the man who had persuaded President Hindenburg to make Hitler Chancellor of Germany in 1933. Von Papen had been seized at his own home by First Lieutenant Thomas McKinley and his men from the US 194th Glider Infantry Regiment.

It is a city surrounded by an impenetrable wall, a warren of green-buildings walled in hanging gardens and governed by The Agency? Most people don’t even ask what’s outside the wall anymore, but perhaps that is the result of the careful N-sub propaganda. Or perhaps it’s all just a matter of faith—faith in what was on the other side. Fiona Tronick—is she a drug dealer or a government agent? A strong, independent woman or a lost, abused girl? READER VIEWS KIDS B O OK OF THE MONTH Legends of the Donut Shop By Terry Overton Young Reader/Teen Indipendent Pubished (2022) ISBN 9798435290882 Reviewed by Amy Lignor for Reader Views (04/2022)

I

’m going to begin by thanking author Terry Overton from the bottom of my heart for this book, “Legends of the Donut Shop.” Reason being…I had a grandpa who I absolutely idolized (still do, actually). I still have a black-and-white photo of him and me on my night table. He is wearing his fedora and looking like Indiana Jones with his arm on my shoulder, because I was only about three feet high at the time, and we’re standing by a 1950’s automobile, which is when they made cars actually look awesome. That photo is my favorite because I used to see him and Grandma every Sunday and I would sit outside in a rocking chair, while he fixed the car or polished it up, and told me stories about his life. From meeting Grandma and marrying her because she was supposedly the only one who basically told him to get lost (and he was surprised by that, so he took it as a challenge); to the times when he donned his Air Force duds to fight for his country. Well…in this book there is a grandpa, too. And even though our main character experiences a horrifying moment where he is injured in a head-on collision with another car, it’s that moment in time that brings about a near-death experience allowing the seventeen-year-old main character, Wes Williams, to travel back in time and walk into the Donut Shop once again to spend time with his beloved grandfather. Now, Wes’ grandad sits with other pals of his, with Wes by his side, and these men tell tales about their lives, their time in the service, as well as share jokes with one another while Wes looks on, becomes engaged, and ends up truly caring about all of these men—they include a sheriff who retired from his career at catching bad guys, and veterans who have so much cool stuff to say. In fact, the stories are so well told by this author that readers are automatically sent back to their own “special” times with family where they learned, laughed, cried, and realized how important having a family really is.

INTERVIEW WITH 000000 AUTHOR OF “A SLIPPERY SHADOW”

R

ecently awarded a Gold Medal by Reader Views 2021-22 Literary Awards in the Mystery/Thriller category, writing started for Gary D. McGugan after a 40-year career in the world of business. He’s worked in supermarkets, sold appliances, distributed motorcycles, launched an automobile dealer network, and provided financing to help businesses grow. Every industry was very different from the other. Each company had a distinctive culture and character, but all were units of large corporations with operations around the globe. Travel has always been a large component of his business roles and he’s now visited more than 650 towns and cities in more than fifty countries for either business or leisure. Experts say we should write about things we know best. In Gary’s case, those subjects are business, travel, and people. As an author, his goal is to entertain readers around the world — one at a time.. Hi Gary, Welcome back to Reader Views! What is “A Slippery Shadow” all about? Thanks for having me back, Sheri. And thanks for asking about my latest novel, “A Slippery Shadow.” It’s a suspense thriller, revealing some of the unexpected challenges people who lead enterprises—either legal or criminal types of

organizations—can encounter when a mysterious player pulls some strings behind the scenes.! What inspired the storyline behind this book? When I decide to write a story, my inspiration is always to create a tale to entertain my readers. There’s great competition for the hard-earned dollars people have available for entertainment, so I always want to tell a story that rewards their investment of time and money. But, there are also fundamental changes taking place in our global society. Some countries’ political leaders were formerly entertainers, spies, businesspeople, or military officers. Corporations have become global, generating revenues far greater than most people can conceptualize. Organized crime has become sanitized, controlling supposedly legitimate companies traded on public stock markets. “A Slippery Shadow” suggests what might happen when a player in one of those sectors decides to pull strings to influence what they want to happen, and how easily it all might take form. While I’m entertaining my readers, I’d like them to think about the possible implications and how those actions might eventually touch all of us in unexpected ways. What was it like getting inside the heads of two strong independent women when they

I also like to “people-watch.” But to me, people-watching delves far deeper than clothes people wear, hairstyles, make-up, or the way they carry themselves. I’ve watched women negotiate fiercely, revealing their inner

thought processes. I’ve seen many reactions to victory or accomplishment, and observed how some coped with adversity. Every interaction is an opportunity to learn, and behaviors of both genders have long fascinated me. When it’s time to write, create dialog, or dig deep for emotion, I try to recall real people in similar circumstances and remember things they said or actions they took. Recalling those memories helps make my characters and their dialog feel more genuine to a reader.y...

S

ometimes we need a little bit more than an endorsement, book review or book cover to get a feeling for the story and decide on whether to purchase or not a title. For me, the little something is a book video. A book video not only brings to life the main story or topic for the reader, it can also portray a feeling on who the Author is and what message he or she wants to share. Below are some things I get from book videos that help make the decision to read the book but also gives me insight on its contents, improving in many cases, my reading experience. • The images – unlike movie trailers which use previews from the movie, the book video images could be off putting when reading the story, as the characters looks and settings will be a combined result of the descriptions, and the readers’ imagination. But images that do not mess with such specifics and instead reflect the message, topic, or plot are perfect as a preview of a book, because it helps us to visualize in a short time the content of the book. • Background music and narrator’s voice – The sound allows the possible reader to feel the mood of the story. Is it thrilling? Mysterious? Romantic? • Finally, but not least is the script of the slides or voice narration. Here is where we learn what the book is all about, and other information like endorsements, Author website, and where to get the book. What is awesome about book videos is that we get all the above information in one minute or less! Check out some book videos we included here by clicking on the cover!

Difficult Topics – Picture Books to the Rescue Lately, it seems that topics challenging to broach with children abound. The pandemic, January 6, LBGTQ+ rights, the rise of racism, and hate crimes are just a few. And now the war in Ukraine, horrifically playing out in front of us on TV every day! It is challenging to discuss these kinds of topics in developmentally appropriate ways. As a school librarian, I found picture books were often the best springboard to start difficult discussions. Picture books, generally written for audiences ages 4 – 8, are a familiar format familiar for these younger children, and the pictures add to the topic without being scary. For older kids, even middle and high schoolers, the subject is laid out in simple terms and not in-depth. The questions and observations made by the older children will determine how much detail to discuss with them. You may think that older children may balk at the use of picture books, thinking of them as babyish. However, that was never an issue. Instead, my older students loved a break from longer chapter books and appreciated the artwork. A few months ago, I wrote about the growing and alarming trend of removing and banning books from school libraries. Not only are books being censored, but in some school districts, teachers cannot discuss topics such as racism and LBGTQ+ with their students. In some cases, history is being whitewashed to prevent some students from feeling uncomfortable. Recently, I heard the story of a gay Kindergarten teacher in Florida. Every year he teaches a unit about families. All the children bring pictures of their families to post on the class bulletin board. In past years, the teacher had posted a photo of himself and his husband. However, because of a recent law passed there, he feels that he – and any other students in his class with a non-traditional family unit – will feel they cannot share their family photos. Just describing their family would be against this new Florida “Don’t Say Gay” legislation. I realize that some of the books that would be useful to introduce tough topics could be the same being targeted by schools for censorship. Children can no longer depend on their schools to provide information and allow discussion on many relevant subjects. This makes it imperative that bookstores and public libraries stock their shelves with these pertinent books. Following are two timely books that are useful to discuss the war in Ukraine with children. Eve - Barefoot Librarian

Nour’s Secret Library By Wafa’ Tarnowska, Illustrator: Vali Mintzi Barefoot Books (2022) - ISBN 9781646862917

Age: 6 - 10 years old - Hardcover - 32 pages - $17.99

Nour’s Secret Library is based on a true story. Although this book is about war in Syria, it is the perfect book to help children think about the war in Ukraine. The community takes refuge in basements in this book as their city is bombarded. Children start collecting books they find when it is safe to roam the streets and eventually build a library. These books offered the residents of this beleaguered city a way to escape from the harsh realities of war. Endnotes include the author’s real-life wartime experiences, information about and a map of Syria, a glossary, and more. This book is a timely and beautiful ode to the power of the human spirit and books.

Featured Authors Conor Mitchell Conor Mitchell was born in October of 1994 and raised in the suburbs just outside of Baltimore, MD. Growing up, he had gained a fascination with photography and videography. In 2007, while visiting his uncle in Palo Alto, CA, Conor experienced the city of San Francisco for the very first time. From the minute he got on the plane back to Baltimore, he never stopped talking about his plan to eventually move back to the city he fell in love with after only one visit. Conor started his own YouTube channel, Dragon Rider Network, in October of 2008, dedicated to discussing technology news and tech product reviews. In September of 2018, nearly 11 years after his first visit to the city, he would travel 3000 miles over four days by train to his new home of San Francisco, CA. On March 16th, 2020, San Francisco announced that it would be instituting a ShelterIn-Place to help combat the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first major metropolitan area in California and the United States to enact such an action. Yet, throughout those first 100 days, Conor Mitchell, a photographer and videographer living in downtown San Francisco, found himself alone in the city he had called home for just 18 months. Taking as many pictures as he could, Conor curated a collection of photos in this book to best illustrate what a total lockdown in one of the most famous cities in the world looked like. 42

Lockdown By Conor Mitchell NonFiction -Photography / Photojournalismold) Outskirts Press (2021) ISBN 9781977241160 Tradeback - 84 pages - $29.95 But the street would not stay quiet for long. Aside from the pandemic itself, San Francisco was one of many cities that hosted a string of protests that swept through the country fueled by the death of George Floyd. As a result, the city saw empty city streets become filled with protestors and even scenes of civil unrest. It felt as though the entire country was beginning to pull itself apart. All of these photos present how uncertain things were for San Francisco at the time, but they also paint a picture of how uncertain the city’s future could be as well. Wherever we may be in history relative to the pandemic and protests, Conor hopes these photos will act as a force for change. He hopes that some action will result in a better future for us after dealing with this pandemic, a summer of revolutionary protests, and what feels to be a lifetime of uncertainty. * Overall Best Non-Fiction Bronze Winner

S

andra Brown-Lindstedt says simply and ingenuously that it is “particularly suited for ages 8–12.” I’m afraid that’s like saying To Kill A Mockingbird is at heart a children’s book just because it’s narrated by a child. So is Life of a Firefly. But the child, a young girl named Sandy Forte, is every bit the storyteller and every bit as literate as Scout. This book is every whit as powerful, as emotive, and as profoundly evocative and compelling as its more-famous classic cousin. Sandy Forte is one of the most appealing characters ever to appear in contemporary fiction. — Joel R. Dennstedt Readers’ Favorite I loved this book! When I first picked it up I was afraid it would be too “young” for me but Sandy is a character that captured my attention immediately and I soon found myself taking any chance I could to break away from everything and read. Sandy is hilarious and had me laughing out loud throughout the whole book. Her personality is as big as life – she says what’s on her mind and that often gets her into trouble, but sometimes it’s her inner thoughts that are the funniest. — Amy C. Reader Views Kids
