DELAWARE STATE FIRE SCHOOL DVFAHonors 2020 Poster & Essay Award Winners

Even with the challenges presented by Covid 19 the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Associations Fire and Life Safety Committee moved forward with its Poster and Essay Contest. Children who competed in 2020 were honored at an awards ceremony on December 5, 2021 hosted by the Carlisle Fire Company of Milford.

Delaware State Police Recruits Complete Fire Survival Training

The fall Delaware State Police Recruit Class (98/91) completed its Fire Survival Training at the Delaware State Fire School on November17 and 18, 2021. Students completed Chemistry of Fire Training. They worked to complete theirNFPAHazMat Awareness Training as well as completed evolutions with ladders, sprinklers, fire extinguishers and escape training. The FDSOABoard is excited to announce a new Members Only area to your website. You will have to be logged into the website to view this area.

One new feature of this area is a Document Library where we will collect and store documents that our members may use in their own departments. The Document Library will store documents encompassing various topics to include Behavioral Health, Safety Officer specific items, Emergency Vehicle Technician, Physical Fitness and Vehicle Accidents to name a few. Our goal is to build a robust library over time that will allow members to research various policies without having to “reinvent the wheel”.

We are requesting your help in filling the library. If you have any documents that you would like to share, please let us know. If you have a topic that you would like to see represented, let us know as well.

Santa Visits Holloway Terrace

While maintaining his busy schedule at the North Pole preparing forChristmas, Santa was still able to visit the Holloway Terrace Fire Company district. Holloway Terrace Holiday Get-Together

Holloway Terrace Fire Company membership shared an evening of fellowship and friendship, with some good food and beverages to celebrate the holiday season. The evening’s gathering was organized by committee who served a delicious buffet of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. Honoring Rev. Richard Walton

Farmington Fire Company Installation of Officers for2022

On December18, 2021, while at the annual awards banquet of the Clayton Fire Company, Rev. Richard Walton, an active firefighterforthe Harrington Fire Company was recognized with the achievement of Life Memberof theircompany. Rev. Walton was a careerfirefighterwith the City of Wilmington Fire Department retiring with 20 years of service, as well as volunteering within the fire service in Delaware. Upon retiring, Rev. Walton became an ordained ministerand has served many years in multiple churches. Most recently, Rev. Walton served as the pastorof Ewell Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church in Clayton forseveral years, before being assigned to Woodside United Methodist Church in 2021. When Rev. Walton is not providing service to his congregation, he can be found assisting around the station in any capacity he can, as well as helping on incidents responded to by the company. He is currently serving as a Chaplain forthe Harrington Fire Company, as well as multiple Kent County associations. We would like to congratulate Rev. Walton on the accomplishment of Life Memberof the Clayton Fire Company. We would also like to thank him forhis continued dedicated service to ourcompany and community. Thank you Rev. Roland Timmons Named Clayton’s December Memberof the Month

At the January 11, 2022, monthly meeting Clayton Fire Company honored a memberwho, during the previous month, did an outstanding job. During the January company meeting Life Member Roland Timmons was awarded a certificate and $50 gift card forhis outstanding December. Rehoboth Beach Christmas Parade

Rehoboth Beach VolunteerFire Company sponsored their Hometown Christmas Parade on December6, 2021. Santa and Mrs. Claus rode in town on “Big Red” with past-Chief Leonard Tylecki driving. Floats, bands, decorated cars, trucks, and much more filled Rehoboth Avenue with almost 90 units marching. Santa greeted the kids at the fire station afterthe parade where they were treated to hot chocolate and cookies. Ahuge crowd was on hand to watch as the pandemic cancelled last year’s parade. Thanks to all who participated to make this a great parade.

Obituaries

Holloway Terrace’s William Stevenson

The Holloway Terrace Fire Company mourned the loss of active Life Member, William ‘Bill’Stevenson, who passed away on November 24, 2021.

Bill was a 1965 graduate of William Penn High School and Delaware Technical and Community College. Bill enlisted and served honorably in the United States Air Force. Bill retired from Acme Markets after 25 years, also retiring from New Castle County as Treasury Supervisor after 25 years. He was serving as Treasurer of the Holloway Terrace Fire Company, a position he held with honor and distinction for 32 consecutive years.

In addition to his fire company family, Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna J. (Schmitt) Stevenson, son Robert, daughter Brandi Patterson (Ben), grandchildren Lauren Stevenson (James), Joshua Patters and Mallori Stevenson; great-grandchildren Everett Tyre, Jameson Stevenson, Harrison Walls and a great-granddaughter due in March 2022 and brother Jack Stevenson. - Submitted by Randy Roberts

Farmington’s Carl Roork

The Farmington Fire Company mourns the loss of Chief Engineer and Life Member Carl Roork who answered his last alarm on December 4, 2021.

Carl joined the Department in 1958, and was an active member for 59 years. He was Chief Engineer for approximately 45 years and was still actively serving in that position up until his passing. He was named Firefighter of the Year five times and received the Fireman of the Year twice. He served on numerous truck committees through the years including Engine 47-5 (1979 and 2013), Rescue 47 (1983 and 2017) and Tanker 47 (1984 and 1995). Carl’s pride and joy however was the company’s 1927 GMC antique fire truck, which he was always eager to take to any parades or demonstrations that he could.

His knowledge, expertise, and dedication cannot be replaced and will be sorely missed. - Submitted by Tom Williams

Laurel Students Learn About Kitchen Fire Safety

Underthe direction of Culinary Arts teacher, Meagan Bunting, Laurel High School students in the Culinary Arts program received training from the Delaware State Fire School on kitchen fire safety. Approximately 180 students took place in the two-day training, which included home and kitchen safety as well as fire extinguisherusage. On December14, 2021, the Clayton Fire Company honored a memberfortheirprevious month’s activity at the company meeting. In August, JuniorMemberReaghan King was named the memberof the month and would have received her award in September, howeverReaghan, who attends Smyrna High School, has herown candle business, and plays rugby and was not able to attend the meetings in September, October, orNovember. - Submitted by Kevin Wilson On December14, 2021, prior to the start of the regular Decemberfire company meeting, the members and officers took time to dedicate a Little Library. The idea of having a Little Library was brought to the board of directors several months ago by then-Explorer memberReaghan King. She proposed the idea and educated the board on the Little Library program. She stated she would keep it stocked with books and fire prevention materials. The Little Library is located in the entrance way of the fire company off East Street in Clayton. The Little Library program has thousands of these across the county and the one in Clayton is registered with littlefreelibrary.org. 2021 Santa Run

Felton Presents 2020 Awards

The Felton Community Fire Company is proud to announce its 2020 award recipients. These awards normally would be presented earlier in the year at a banquet but were delayed due to Covid.

The 2020 Joseph H. Griffith, Jr., Firefighter of the Year is Ben Bishop. Ben follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a Firefighter with Felton Com-munity Fire Company. In a short time, Ben has completed all his core fire training and obtained his EMT certification. Ben is hard working and willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. Ben is pictured with his Father Mike Bishop, grandfather Oscar Bishop and girlfriend Oliva.

The 2020 Walter H. Moore Fireman of the Year is Ryan Deputy. Ryan’s time as an “official” member of the company may be short, but the maturity and growth he has shown in that time is immeasurable. Ryan takes care of his fire company family in any way that he can and without hesitation. Ryan’s late father, Donald, was the first recipient of this award back in 1995. Ryan’s mother Robin and grandmother Cindy are active life members of the Felton Fire Company Auxiliary.
