with Megan Ande r son! Finding the positives in the mayhem

We have seen plenty of the Lightning, so it is not a big deal.

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone involved in all capacities to try and get the season finished. I understand how difficult it is under the circumstances and really appreciate the efforts and sacrifices people keep making.

It is so good to be home in Queensland though, especially after being away for weeks, so we have all loved reconnecting with the ones that could not come to Melbourne; it has been a little reunion.

For us as teams it is hard to juggle it and deal with it – but for those having to plan it all, I can only assume how tough that is.

As a team we are really excited to be able to play at Nissan Arena in front of a home crowd – especially as we do not know what will happen in the next few weeks.

There are always positives to take out of any experience and that’s what we have tried to do.

Playing on a Monday night is exciting too, I know last year I really liked the mid-week games as I was at home and could watch.

So having a few hours to leave Brisbane for Melbourne and people just up and went, particularly staff who have kids at home, they went above and beyond. I believe it only made us tighter as a group down in Melbourne and everyone just knew we had a job to do and just got in and got it done. A special mention to our two training partners, Ruby (Bakewell-Doran) and Mia (Stower), who gave up two weeks of their life to be training partners during our time in Melbourne. Ruby got her debut which was great. There was a bit of turmoil for us in the 24 hours after we left Melbourne. We got the call to say we were flying to Adelaide, so the girls went home to pack, then we got told we weren’t going. Now we have a clearer picture of things, it is easier. It was kind of funny when we flipped our focus from Fever to Lightning, then we did not know who we were playing and now it is the Lightning again. For us the good thing is that we have been taking it one week at a time and just focusing on ourselves mostly, so this doesn’t change things that much for us.

But we do hope all the Queensland fans that can make it come along and cheer us on!

Ja nine C. What a cracker of a game we had in our last hit out against the Sunny Coast Lightning! I can’t wait to see the match up through the centre court with Maddy McAuliffe and Gabi Simpson and also between Rav and former Firebird, Mahalia Cassidy. The Firebirds did a fantastic job of shutting down the centre court in our last hit out so, here’s hoping we can repeat that feat. Of course, a win would be great too especially with so many of the players having been away from home for the past few weeks. A big thanks to the team, coaching and support staff – the fact that the team hasn’t missed a beat as we come into the tail end of the season really makes me proud to be a Firebirds supporter. There have been a lot of changes with the season but I also know how resilient we are – both our team, members and supporters. It’s taken a lot to keep our season running so, I also want to give a special shout out to our members and the team behind the scenes too. I couldn’t imagine being the game day

team at the moment with all the logistics of upcoming weekend/weekday games being finalised a day or 2 before game day. I also was unsure whether we’d get to see another game live this season in Queensland and I’m really glad we’re able to. I can’t wait to be sitting in the stands cheering on our Birdies and see a sea of purple shirts – I think my husband will be happy for me to be watching the game live too – it will save me yahooing in the house . There really is something about watching netball live and our Birdies especially that makes my heart sing. It always pumps me up for the week ahead and I’m keen to see our winning streak continue too although I know it will be a tough task against the Lightning. There are a lot of small businesses doing it tough in lockdown and I’d like to also give them a shout out. It’s not an easy feat to keep tracking but we’ve proven over and over that we can achieve anything. Our Birdies are really the jewel in our crown, they are remarkable young woman netballers and remarkable role models of resilience and persistence – many of whom also work in small businesses to complement their playing income. Let’s bring home the win on Queensland soil this weekend – for the battlers, for those front-line workers doing a remarkable job and for all of Queensland. Gooo Birdies! Janine C. Wynnum
