COACH'S COACH'S CORNER

M AT C H P R E V I E W W I T H R O S E L E E J E N C K E A GOOD WIN OVER THE THUNDERBIRDS, WAS THAT WHAT YOU WERE EXPECTING? You can’t expect anything in sport, but that was certainly the focus leading into the game. We needed to win and win big to boost our finals chances. The Thunderbirds to their credit came out firing and caught us a little off-guard. They lockedup that first quarter and denied us a valuable bonus point, so hopefully that start doesn’t come back to haunt us. Once we found our rhythm in that second quarter we were able to follow our game-plan and allowed our combinations to click and ultimately secure the victory we needed. IT SEEMS YOU’RE FINDING THE RIGHT FORM, AT THE RIGHT TIME? It’s what you want, especially at this time of the season leading into finals. That victory over Adelaide was our third straight – the first time we’ve done that all season, so that’s pleasing from a coaching perspective. We’ve had an up-anddown season and at times we’ve struggled to find consistency. So, to string three-straight wins together – with two of those against top-two opposition is a real positive and will provide us with good momentum heading into this Collingwood clash.

IT REALLY IS ALL ON THE LINE THIS WEEKEND WHAT’S THE GAME-PLAN AGAINST COLLINGWOOD? We need to keep winning – simple. We also need to ensure we secure as many quarters as possible for those extra bonus points to give us every hope of finishing as high up the ladder as we can. Magpies will be playing with plenty of emotion. It’s Sharni Layton’s last ever game, as well as Kristy KeppichBirrell’s as coach and they’ve got nothing to lose which is a dangerous combination, so we must ensure we start fast and play four complete quarters of our best netball – otherwise Magpies will make us pay.

SNAPSHOT – ROUND 14

SUPER NETBALL SNAPSHOT

Everything is truly on the line this weekend with the final round of the regular season set to determine the make-up of the top four. As it stands, five teams remain in contention to play finals netball heading into Round 14. The Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds currently sit in 4th after walking away with seven competition points following their 21-goal drubbing of the bottom-placed Thunderbirds last weekend. In one of their best quarters all season, Adelaide denied Queensland a vital 1st quarter bonus point after finishing the term locked at 15-15. It could come back to haunt the Firebirds with only eight points separating the top four teams. The Lightning climbed two spots into 3rd after taking all eight competition points in a comprehensive 61-51 defeat of the Swifts. Led by Geva Mentor – Sunshine Coast’s defence was again rock solid which paved the way for their attacking duo of Caitlin Bassett and Steph Wood to capitalise in the goal circle. Currently on 63 competition points, the Lightning could technically clinch a finals berth by halftime against Vixens this weekend as they only need two points to secure their spot in the top four.

West Coast became the first guaranteed finalist of 2018 after downing the Vixens 68-55. After their last-start loss to the Firebirds, the Fever came out firing claiming the opening two bonus points. Melbourne welcomed back Emily Mannis from finger surgery but were dealt a massive blow with Mwai Kumwenda ruled out for the remainder of the season after rupturing the ACL in her knee during the quarter. The injury puts even more pressure on the Vixens with this weekend’s match against the Lightning a must-win for Melbourne if they’re to play finals netball this year. Already out of finals contention – the Magpies were hoping to send off the retiring Sharni Layton with a victory on home soil at Hisense Arena, but the Giants had other ideas. Collingwood couldn’t contain the visitors, as the Giants claimed all eight competition points with a 66-56 victory. The win also secured last year’s runners-up a spot in the top four once again, but where they’ll place will be decided this weekend in an exciting final round of Super Netball.
