Project Brief The objective of this assignment is to help you to gain insight into the almost infinite range of possibilities available within strict constraints, to try to place values on these artifacts, and to explore methods of combining these idea families to create new and unexpected designs. This assignment is an adaptation of the customary “draw 100 thumbnails” that is the bane of all first-year design students; however, the end result of this exercise is not a finished Monogram Design. It is an exploration of the complex and iterative nature of the design process.

Project Brief Learn about using “the grid” to visually organize information by analyzing a magazine layout.

Cover Page

Grid

When I started to do the grid practice by using VOGUE spreads, I found the famous magazine like VOGUE got very similar Cover page for every month (VOGUE’s cover page remains me about TIME magazine). Generally there would be a portrait shot and plus some main article’s title and very short summary of the articles. There are two things of this magazine cover is rarely changed, which are magazine title’s size and the title’s place. As we can see from the grid, the size of the magazine title almost covered 1/5 of the page, as well the font is bold and sherif. For other text content, the articles’ titles are mostly have a bigger font size, some of them were changed color (depended on the different needed). This layout doesn’t fit into the 3 columns. The texts box are asymmetry but very balance on the cover page. The grid can help viewer to analyze about the pages layout more easily. VOGUE magazine always have some good typesetting pages, even there is more and more advertising pages that very destructive and very inconsistent. vvv

Content Page The content pages for VOGUE October 2011 are followed 4 columns layout very consistently. The titles of each sections were bold and size up. For the title and the subtitle, the editor increasing the size for both of them. Title VOGUE is the biggest font of these four pages and the subtitle, October is the second large one. VOGUE as a fashion magazine, it’s going to be to boring to only put text for the content page. I suspect that’s why there are different sizes pictures place on the different spot of each content pages. The images in some ways helped to create a visual balance. Images disrupted the texts and created the transition and continuit.

When I started to looking for the good examples for the spreadsheet for analysis, I am kind of feel a little disappointed by the advertising pages in the VOGUE magazine. The styles and the layout of the advertising pages just too disturbed the visual effect of the whole magazine. I want to teal up all of them, but I knew it’s a way to increase the income for the magazine company, the advertisers are paid pretty high fees to occupied on page or two on the famous.. Except the advertising pages, all the other editorial pages in the magazine seem all right to me. I chose this one for my editorial page analysis is because this page had became the most popular page layout in VOGUE. A small column on the very left of right hand-side with a huge good print picture on the rest of pages. One column of text plus a good quality printed picture with bigger size title and enlarge the first letter of the paragraph. This kind of page layout is a representative to the simplicity. It’s good to use to introduce a photo, a painting or any other visual pieces.

Project Brief This is an exercise in creating an information hierarchy in the context of a poster. Text copy and two photographs will be provided. Your assignment is to create a small poster for the Atlantic Jazz Festival using Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign. Use standard Letter size paper, Portrait mode. Use only the DejaVu family of fonts, black ink only.

Hierarchy

You may use one greyscale image. I have provided two images for you to use. Choose one of them. Be prepared to adjust the tonal values of your images in Photoshop so that they read well in your poster.

These six posters are the ďŹ rst six that I got for the project. I personally do not really like it. So I started over, pushed myself a little bit more, and come up with the six belovw.

This is the ďŹ nal poster for this project. I felt I really learn a lot from it. And I found that the more I push myself, the better result I will get for the design projects. As well, the most important thing that I ďŹ nally realized I realized is: simplicity doesn have to be strictly and boring, it can also be as fun as minimunism.

5

Project Brief I was given two words, a noun and an adjective. The ďŹ rst list contains nouns that communicate a negative idea. The second list contains adjectives that communicate a positive idea. This assignment is to use typographic design to adapt the word from the ďŹ rst list so that it communicates the idea of the adjective in the second list. And I got Benevolent and Poison.

First Stage & Second Stage After these two stage I felt a little bit panic for this project. Cuz the ďŹ rst time I did it backwards and second time I did not include the positive meaning

POISON Final This is the Final Version I have got for this project. I transformed the letter “O to two hand, and one of it is giving a dollar to the other one. I am basically did not change the thought when I did the second stage, instead, I took out the negative meaning and add the possitive one to the poster instead. This is a story tell poster.

Brief

ProJector is an electrical todo list with the projector. ProJector stands for projector, and professional jector. This s a really small machine with the light touch functionality. It can project the todo list to anywhere the users like. But the best place to project the to do list is the ceiling wall. Everynight before users go to bed, they can make the todo list by recording the things that they have to do tomorrow. The users can easily go over what have done and what left, as well as what has been done by tomorrow. If the users want to deleted the item or change it, it can simply be done by raise their hands or talked to the ProJector. Even more, users can connect the projector to their phone to updated the to do list with blue tooth. In that case, the ProJector is using anywhere. Lastly, ProJector is a farily light machine that can be carried to anywhere the users like...
