Five interesting facts about Farnsworth house 1. It was built just above the Fox rivers 100-year flood mark. However, due to urbanization along other parts of the river the flood levels have risen over time. This has posed the house many threats as it has been flooded a number of times and had its interior destroyed. 2. It is regarded as one of the fullest expressions of modernist ideals in architecture. Its minimalism even extended to an original lack of cupboards for clothing with van der Rohe stating that occupants could just keep their possessions in a suitcase. 3. The house is the ultimate in simplified living. Everything has been deducted to basic forms and functions. A factor that allowed Mies to do this was that the house was never intended to be lived in by more than one person, and only on weekends- hence its impractical nature. 4. The house was famous even before it had been built. Perhaps this is testament to its continued fame and ‘iconic status’. It has even been made into a Lego model. 5. The house is almost transparent, with the only boundaries between it and the nature around it being glass. At the time it was built this was revolutionary.

Landforms and Contour plans Topography type: BARCHANS A Barchan dune is wind formed, crescent shaped sand dune. They occur in deserts around the world and can form individual or chains of dunes. Barchans are formed when an obstruction on a plain or desert such as a shrub initiates the accumulation of wind deposition (in this case sand) around it. The continued deposition due to a prevailing wind direction leads to an accumulation around one side of the obstacle. The dunes are asymmetrical in cross section with a gentle 15-degree slope facing toward the wind and a steeper slip face of approximately 30–35 degrees on the opposite side. They also have two “horns” that face downwind. Barchans may be 9–30 m high and up to 370 m wide at the base measured perpendicular to the wind.
