Hello, my name is Fiona and I am currently finishing my last term of my bachelor of architectural studies at the University of Waterloo in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. In the past four years of my architectural studies I have worked on projects of various programs, sizes, and budgets both in school and during my internship experiences. At school I enjoy exploring how architecture affects the urban experience though imagining how the users would interact amongst themselves and the spaces they occupy. The absence of a monetary limit removes many constraints in the design which can only be achieved in an academic setting. In a real world setting as I have experienced over my six co-op terms, there has always been a budget and often the case is one of the main driving factors in the design process. My professional work experiences has taught me efficient building designs with economy in mind while maintaining quality of the space through detailed building construction. Past projects include small and large scale commercial buildings, large scale institutions, and medium scale residential projects. I have work experience in architecture offices world wide that ranges from small studios to large firms. 3 X3 R ES IDEN C E A project exploring the use of steel construction in components and modules to create an affordable housing project in West Toronto.

The 3x3 Residence was inspired by the Maison DĂŠmontable by Jean Prouve in which the entire house was made with a modular kit of parts that was flatly packed, and assembled on site. The modularity of the Maison DĂŠmontable allowed it to be customizable, thus able to be modified according to site conditions without much hassle. The 3x3 Residence was an experiment in a creating modularity both within each unit, as well as the structure as a whole. By establishing a basic kit of parts of the most

basic building elements - walls, floors, ceilings - and stacking it like building blocks to create a mid-density housing complex. The modularity of the building components allowed for a variety of units to suit the potential tenants of this building. Located on the boarder between Carleton Village and the up-and-coming Junction Triangle in Toronto, this building acts not only as a residence, but also a point of convergence for the community. Morphology

Extrusion of the site was taken.

Large garage doors on the ground floor create permeability between the exterior and the courtyard

A wall is raised along the train track to provide sound separation.

Unit Configurations

Building Section

The ground and second floor are public spaces that are used by the residence as well as members of the community. On the ground floor there is a market, a open air theatre, and a courtyard. When the spaces are not operational, this building

is a regular residence. On certain days, the market, the courtyard, the theatre, or a combination of the three will be activated to create a host for community gatherings. The market on the ground floor has large operable overhead doors that can be

opened in the summer and during special events to allow spill-out into the courtyard. The second floor is a small community education centre where small extra-curricular classes are hosted, and study and lounge spaces are provided for school

-children in the neighbourhood. This is an inviting spaces for members of community who lack a safe and comfortable environment to work under to enjoy.

From the third floor onto the seventh floor are residential units composed of assembled steel modules. These 1 to 2 bedroom units are suitable for couples and young families that

are looking for an affordable place to live in Toronto. The modularity of the construction allows for quick and cost-efficient building that translates into more affordable housing.

3A STUDIO FINAL PROJECT COMPLETED: April 2015 PROJECT LOCATION: Liberty Village, Toronto Located in the developing Liberty Village in Toronto, beside a newly built commuter train line serving the Downtown, Crossroads is a project which serves as an extension of the train connecting the suburbs, the Village and the Downtown. In addition, Crossroads is a commercial building to serve

the growing, young working population in the area. On the ground floor are public gathering spaces such as a market, plaza, and waterworks. The public space is extended to the higher floors through a series of large ramps that is also intersecting the building at points to connect the exterior of the interior. Within spaces for small business start-ups are provided with the addition of traditional office spaces. Site Plan

Building and Site Model

Within the building, there are two large “caves” excavated from the massing to create a gathering space for the workers in the buildings. The “cave” spans 5 floors, from which there is a direct visual connection, in addition to a series

of stairs physically connecting the people on these floors. This vertical connection encourages collaborating and the exchange of ideas. In addition to the “caves” a series of staircases directly

running between floors further encourage vertical communication, and collaboration. There stairs face towards the series of ramps, and the garden on the platform, thus providing a view and connection to the exterior.

N AT ION AL R ES EA R C H C OUN C IL A research facility for the National Research Council of Canada. Explores the modularity of laboratory design to achieve efficient use of space.

WINTER+SPRING 2016 CO-OP: Diamond Schmitt Architects COMPLETED: Aug 2016 PROJECT LOCATION: Mississauga, Canada NRC CCAMM is a research facility for disruptive technology development. The project is located in Sheridan Park, a designated research and development district near a transprovincial highway. The research park was first

designated in the 1970s but has fallen short of its vision of attracting a large crowd of research and development companies. In a new masterplan the vision of a research park was revived. Diamond Schmitt was asked to develop the schematic design for a 4500m2 office and laboratory space for researchers at the National Research Council of Canada involved in the disruptive technologies. I was involved heavily in the project from the very beginning. I worked with a principal of the firm who specialized in laboratory design. Together we developed various options for the layout of the offices and laboratories.

The blocking diagrams above illustrates abstractly the option which we presented the stakeholders as the optimal option due to the rationality of the plan which reduces construction and maintenance costs. The - 25 -

stakeholders agreed with our opinion, following the meeting we developed the blocking diagrams into plans to show the layout of the lab casework, equipment, and office workstations.

C L IC H Y A project exploring the use of steel construction in components and modules to create an affordable housing project in West Toronto.

Clichy is a 40,000 m2 commercial building located just outside the periphery north of Paris. The site is adjacent to an existing park, and the landscaping on the ground floor aims to connect the city to the park. To accommodate for the drop in typography a smooth hill was designed with paths weaving between the patches of greenscape. This connection to nature is repeated throughout the building through landscaped atriums, and accessible rooftop

terraces. The floor plate dimensions and modular facade is designed for to maximize the efficiency and flexibility of office spaces for tenants. Amenities such as restaurants, outdoor spaces, and space for exercise are also provided for the users of the building.

The vertical circulation of the building is located along the three atriums of the building. Feature stairs and glass elevators allow for opportunities of interaction between the users of the building. The bright public spaces encourage collaboration and socialization. The collages depicting interior spaces is a design tool which we used to experiment with the architectural elements and provides a general atmosphere of what the space should feel like.

MOR IMOTO A S IA Interior renovation project converting an old factory into a high-end restaurant

FALL 2014 CO-OP: Studio V Architecture COMPLETED: Dec 2014 PROJECT LOCATION: Orlando, Florida Morimoto Asia is a Asian fusion restaurant located in Orlando Florida. The Patina Group, based in New York, hired Studio V to design their new restaurant in collaboration with Japanese iron chef Masaharu Morimoto. The restaurant is to be located in a decommissioned bottling plant,

and client wished to maintain the industrial appearance. My contribution to the project included preparing design drawings, and Due to the poor condition of the interior elevation package based on completed existing building, everything had to be plans and sections. I also attended bi-weekly demolished save for the structure. One key meetings with the client to consolidate and component of the design is the “ribbon bar”, review the design. A CH AIR FOR MA R K TWA IN A design-build project; designing a chair inspired by Mark Twain, and realizing the design by constructing a physical chair from scratch

FALL 2015: ARCH 345 DESIGN-BUILD COMPLETED: Dec 2015 IN COLLABORATION WITH: Kevin Park

The chair which we designed for Twain is to reflect his love of being a pilot on the Mississippi for he loved the profession far better than any that have followed since. He could sit on this chair on a sunny day while For this course we were asked to bathing under the sun, rocking gently on the chose a well known person and design a chair chair with his eye closed. He could imagine for them as if they were our client. We chose himself on a steamboat once again, sailing the witty American author Mark Twain. along the gentle current of the Mississippi.

In addition to designing the chair we also had to build it. Limitations in time, skill, and budget all contributed to the design of the chair. In tandem with the design-build process we also had to do a structural analysis of the chair to learn about how the human load acts upon the object as if it was a structure.

Initial Design Sketches

For our client, we imagined a rocking chair which he could sit on and reminisce about his days aboard the Mississippi river steamboats. Mark Twin’s relaxed and easy-going personality translated well into a lounge chair. We also wanted to incorporate a sounding rope into the chair, as it

is symbolic of his name, which is derived from the depth which would be determined by such a rope. We went through many iterations of the design, but at the idea of a reclined rocking chair always stuck. The design sketches show an evolution of design; eventually we came to the final design which

is composed of a frame that suspended the seat in the middle with a rope. The seat was designed as stretch canvas between the two seat frames to create a hammocklike structure. This added a certain southern appeal to the chair, and further comfort as you sink into the canvas when sitting in it.

CA MB R IDGE C OMMON A small community centre with a public square facing the existing city hall of Cambridge.

2A STUDIO PROJECT COMPLETED: Dec 2013 PROJECT LOCATION: Cambridge, ON This is the design of a community centre located in downtown Cambridge, Ontario. The glass facade plays with the temporal aspect of the building; during the day, the glass is reflective, thus creating an opaque surface when viewed from the exterior. At night, the effect is reversed, such that one can only see reflects of the interior when looking out from the building, but the

building becomes transparent for the exterior. The public square is located between the Cambridge city hall and the new community centre provides a dedicated public space for the community to interact in. Flat paved surfaces allow a variety of functions such as farmers markets and various popup events.
