ately, there has been media coverage about the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer. On October 7, 2012, 60 Minutes did a piece on Luxottica and its monopoly of the eyewear industry. It explored the many licensed brands it produces, such as Versace, Prada, Chanel, Oakley, D&G, Coach, Ray Ban and many more. Luxottica claims that over one billion people worldwide wear its eyewear; this is all mass-manufactured product, mostly from China. Luxottica also retails its own product through its stores such as Lenscrafters, Pearl Vision, Sunglass Hut and others. It shows how cheaply their products are made, and that this mass marketing and retailing truly holds the industry and the public hostage.

Unfortunately, the program listed two alternatives to the high priced Luxottica: Walmart and an online company offering $95 eyewear. Both of these options can be actually worse; many of the styles offered may look nice, but are low quality.

What the program did not include was the independent alternatives, where creativity, artistry and true handcrafted quality reign. These frames are not easy to make, nor are they cheap. tips for relieving a common cold by Shawna Common
It’s that time of year again when people start having the sniffles, and sneezing is a familiar sound. Since a cold is a virus, antibiotics are useless. What do you do if you start feeling the effects of the common cold? There are many home remedies for the common cold, from oldtime concoctions to modern practices. My grandmother swears by the popular old-time mustard plasters, and would slap one on anyone that started coughing. She is convinced that this is the best remedy for any sort of chest ailment, and my mother remembers many mustard plasters from her youth. You will need two heavy pieces of cotton (flannelette is best) the width and length of the infected person’s chest, a towel, cold cream or camphor oil, warm water and mustard powder. Mix the powder and water into a thick paste, and smear it between the two pieces of cotton. Cover the sick person’s chest with either cold cream or camphor oil; place the cotton combination on the sick person’s chest, and cover the whole thing with a thick towel. Leave the plaster on the person for anywhere from five to 20 minutes, then remove. Ensure the plaster is not left on too long, or the mustard will burn the skin. “If there are white blotches on the skin that’s the infection, and the plaster has now loosened the infection in the chest for the person to cough out,” says Grandma. The tried and true remedy of loosening chest and head congestion by holding your head over a bowl of steaming water has been around for generations. Putting a towel over your head and the bowl allows the steam to be concentrated and work faster—just be ready with lots of tissues. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the steaming water for an extra-effective result. The aroma of eucalyptus oil stimulates the sinuses and relieves
congestion from a cold. In addition to being used for steaming, the oil can be applied directly to the chest, neck or even the temples, allowing you to breathe better and relieve some aches associated with colds and flus. Have you ever heard of your parents or grandparents mention the hot toddy? This remedy combines a shot of whiskey (for “warmth”) with a teaspoon of honey (to soothe the throat). Add hot water, a few cloves and a cinnamon stick, and serve with a lemon wedge (for vitamin C). If whiskey isn’t your thing, soothe your sore throat with the tried and true salt water remedy. Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle. Avoid swallowing the mixture—it won’t hurt you, but the taste is not the greatest. Of course, getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of fluids is always recommended. Get a head start on cold season by eating the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables and maintaining a healthy dose of sleep each night. FLR

ast issue, we wrote about new technology in progressive lenses. Three months have gone by, and a new progressive lens has arrived with technology to surpass everything I talked about then. The new Varilux S Series™ progressive lenses arrived to Canada in early September; these lenses have been completely redesigned to create new visual performance benefits in a progressive lens. Created by Varilux, the company that invented progressive lenses in 1952,
the Varilux S Series offers many visual advantages over previous progressive lens designs. All previous progressive lens innovations were refinements or improvements of currently existing technology. In other words, all the previous lenses had the same basic starting lens blank, which is the appropriate-shaped plastic lens we start with. The lens blank is then surfaced, and new curves are ground onto the lens to create the progressive. All current progressive lens designs start with the same lens blank technology so there is a limit to how much we can improve them. Varilux has created an entirely new and different lens blank, creating a new and better technology. This new lens blank design coupled with three new core technologies results in the most distortion-free lens to date.1 The first core technology is called Nanoptix™, which can be likened to GPS. When the lens backside is created, the computer maps the power at each individual point; when the front surface is created, the curvature is adjusted to eliminate the distortion at that point.2 The second technology is SynchronEyes™, where the pair of lenses is calculated and optimized as a pair to widen the field of vision seen by both eyes together.2 The third technology is called 4D; we can now measure a patient’s leading dominant eye, which is the eye that gets to a visual target first.2 Optimizing the lens design for the leading dominant eye gives the patient faster reaction speed and better dynamic vision.2 Three technologies and three advantages: stability in motion, wider field of vision and better reflex vision.2
The bottom line is 90 per cent less distortion than Varilux’s current best progressive design; it also gives 50 per cent wider field of vision with both eyes working together than Varilux’s best design.1 This means wider usable area in the computer and reading areas of the lens, less distortion in the way of your vision, less head turning required, better night vision through WAVE Technology™, and a better overall visual experience. ettled comfortably on her living room couch, Saskatchewan born-and-based actress and performer, Amy Matysio, appears at ease while taking a short break from her performing lifestyle. Matysio, along with co-star Clinton Carew, recently wrapped up Regina’s Globe Theatre production of the Scottish play Midsummer [A Play With Songs]. Matysio has been stage acting for several years. Perhaps her most memorable performance was in the Globe Theatre’s 2010 The Syringa Tree. “It was a one-woman show in which I played over 20 characters and somewhere around 15 regional South African dialects.” Preparing for that performance was a feat. “I started working on the dialects about four months ahead of time,” explains Matysio. “It was hard and it was amazing. It’s one of those shows that I had so much to learn. Realistically, I never actually thought it was going to come together at all. It taught me so much about myself as a performer, about the personal drive and work ethic required . . . you know, I had to cut out a lot of the drinking!” The hilarious web series inSAYSHAble (www.insayshableonline. com) was created, written and co-produced by Matysio, in conjunction with Minds Eye Entertainment. This mini-series looks at a week in the life of Saysha: a bold, awkward, yet lovable character born from Matysio’s imagination. Directed by Jeff Beesley, inSAYSHAble was a team effort Matysio remembers fondly. “I got to work with some artists from my comedic circles, like Christina [Sicoli] who plays Fran—she’s such a good friend of mine. It was a really great opportunity to collaborate and play these strong, audacious female characters, and make them messy and not always pretty. That’s what makes comedy so fun.” Minds Eye producer Mark Montague worked with Matysio. “We’d been friends since elementary school, so it was a great coming together after all these years working near each other in film and TV.” The closeness of the film industry is something Matysio admires. “The amazing thing about Saskatchewan is that it’s such a small

and unique community. It is also one of the saddest things about the community disbanding and going away—you’re losing your friends, but you’re also losing these incredibly talented colleagues.” This spring, the provincial government cut the Film Employment Tax Credit, putting enormous strain on the industry. Matysio had a lead role in the movie known as Saskatchewan’s last big one: Stranded. “The last few days [of filming] were very bittersweet. We were making this really fantastic film and it was such a rewarding experience with world renowned talent: the director [Roger Christian], Christian [Slater] . . . it’s heartbreaking, is what it was. It’s just really sad.” “Stranded was such an incredible opportunity for me,” continues Matysio. The science fiction thriller, produced by Mind’s Eye Entertainment, was shot in Regina. It wasn’t the only film Matysio starred in within her home town. Just Friends (2005) was “the first time I got to work on a large budget film like that . . . learning the ropes, and being exposed to the big picture of how it all worked at that level. It was exciting for me and gratifying and fun. The role was great, and the people were amazing. I think I’ll always remember that as one of my favorite projects in Saskatchewan.” Matysio believes that hard work and perseverance pay off. “Work begets work. And I’m one of those people who will keep working until I get those big jobs that I want.” She has an impressive list of credits behind her name already: the female lead, Chelsea, in the Single White Spenny television series; other television appearances including Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie; movie roles in Mulligans, Chained, Vampire Dog, Ferocious, Dolan’s Cadillac, Sleepwalking, and more. With six Canadian Comedy Award nominations—five for her work with the General Fools Improv Troupe and one for her role on Single White Spenny—comedy is something Matysio has always enjoyed. “I’ve always understood how to make somebody laugh. I think when you figure that out, it’s the best thing ever.

Making someone laugh is awesome.” Matysio sees more of the same in her future. In ten years, “I will be doing this for sure. I don’t see myself not doing this.” Matysio has worked hard for her roles, and admits there is a learning process. “You have to find inner confidence because you might not always have it on the outside . . . and always know that nobody owes you anything. You don’t get jobs just because you’re here. You still have to be the right person for the job.” “I’m a pretty loud person, a pretty strong woman, pretty ballsy girl. As my sister says, ‘please use your indoor voice more often.’ ” Recognizing that it’s important to have support, Matysio appreciates her family, friends and boyfriend. “My family has always been extremely supportive, and that’s been really invaluable to me.” Matysio met her boyfriend, musician Karrnnel Sawitsky, three years ago at the 2009 Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards. Both artists were nominated in the under- 30 category. Although neither won, the experience brought them together as a couple. “I’m supported and understood,” says Matysio. Karrnnel, as he’s known musically, is a fiddle player for the quartet, The Fretless. This fall, The Fretless won the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards’ Instrumental Recording of the Year for their album Waterbound. Does Matysio have a musical side herself? “I sing and I play piano. I wish I was a rock star, like everybody!” she laughs. The two are collaborating on a nonprofit venture to inspire and support kids to go into the arts. “I think it’s important to reach out and say this is the state of the arts, this is how you can enter, and this is how you can branch out. It’s about confidence, and finding it, and knowing you can have it.” Matysio adds, “I want to keep growing, and I want to keep learning. As much as I’ve been inspired by the people that I’ve worked with, I hope to be able to pass that on to other people and to young artists and help them.” Matysio reflects on advice that she has received during her journey through the acting world. “There’s a piece of advice that floats with a lot

of my friends: f– ’em if they can’t take a joke,” she laughs. “It really does just mean you have to have humor and humility. You have to work hard, and you have to go for things, but in the end, you have to still be happy with what you’re doing. Working to please others all the time is not going to get you very far. Comedy is great because you can use it to remind people how ridiculous we all are. So relax and learn to laugh. You’ll look younger!” On Matysio’s horizon is a new documentary series airing on CityTV. Launched in October, On Site takes a look at the mega projects all over the province. As the series host, Matysio laughs, “I went on a crazy adventure! It was great to explore what goes goes on in this province from an industrial perspective, meet people and ask them about what they’re doing.” Passionate about her work and knowing she’s finding her place in the industry, Matysio confides, “Every time someone says, ‘I watched inSAYASHAble and you are funny,’ I think, thank you, that’s what I was trying to do. I’m always going to want to make people laugh.” This charming and effusive Saskatchewan actress and performer continues to grow and succeed in her multi-faceted career. CD: Because climate change is happening, and it poses a real threat to the health and happiness of everyone on earth. If we do nothing about it, kids today, over their lifetime, could
CD: In a number of ways. As just one example, the spread of diseases like West Nile Virus, Hantavirus and tickborne Lyme disease has been linked to the change in our climate. That’s not good news for us.
Is the solution to climate change to stop burning fossil fuels in our vehicles and power plants? CD: We know that fossil fuels will continue to be used for a very long time. It’s not realistic or advisable to expect humanity to stop overnight. We believe that reducing fossil fuel emissions to a minimum is the key to a successful campaign to combat climate change. How is IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. involved in this campaign? CD: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a key weapon to combat climate change. IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. exists to ensure it is safe to store carbon dioxide (CO2) deep underground. Isn’t storing CO2 in the ground risky? CD: Everything has a risk in life. Sending our children off to school each day is risky, but as parents we take a series of steps to minimize risk. That’s exactly what we do in the new CCS industry. We’re here to minimize the risk of storing CO2 deep underground. What is CCS? CD: CCS is the process of capturing CO2 emissions from industrial complexes before it’s released into the atmosphere, putting it under high pressure and
pumping it into geologic formations one or two kilometres deep in the ground.

love it when I hear about an example of exemplary service. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find recent examples of exemplary customer service. Few service providers have it spot-on about how to take care of you, the customer. I personally experienced a very striking example of poor service. I recently moved, and the home security company I was dealing with in the past continued to bill me for security on a home I no longer owned. When I phoned to talk about it, I was overwhelmed with the number of phone calls it took to fix what seemed like a simple problem. As a friend with a similar problem said, “The process almost took away my will to live.” I mention this issue because in the hearing care industry, I find myself almost needing to apologize on a daily basis for the poor service a patient has received elsewhere in Saskatchewan. The educational standards are poor for those providing hearing aids in Saskatchewan. The good news is that the process is changing, but as with all change, it is occurring slowly. Do not settle for second best; there are excellent qualified clinics out there that can fix other people’s wrongs.

T
wo Regina chefs competed for top spot in a culinary challenge at the fall Sysco Regina Food Expo held in Regina in mid-September. For the past three years, Sysco Regina has partnered with the Canadian Culinary Federation Culinaire Canadienne (CCFCC), and this was the second year that the Regina branch of the CCF has participated in the Regina show. Chefs apply to compete at the show, and the winner moves on to the provincial competition at Sysco Regina’s Spring Food Expo in Saskatoon. This year’s winner, Prasad Chavan, is a sous chef from the Saskatchewan Hotel Radisson Plaza; if he is successful at the provincial level, he will go on to compete at the national competition in June 2013. Rob Harrison from Rushton Catering, chair of the Regina Chef’s Association explains, “The chefs and their teams are judged on setup, preparation, taste, presentation and work procedure. There is a first course, a main course and dessert; this year, the competition

courses were salmon and pheasant. This event is a great way to showcase the southern Saskatchewan culinary scene to everyone in the industry, including restaurants, institutions and caterers. It’s a great time, fun to watch, and a stellar opportunity to network with chefs and the food service industry in Saskatchewan. We all have the same goal, which is to provide the best possible food products.” Trent Brears, new president of CCFCC’s Regina branch, and long-time food services manager at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building, was one of the event judges. Brears says the Sysco Regina Food Expo is a great venue for this competition. “We [CCFCC and Sysco Regina] are both in the same industry. Without food suppliers, there are no kitchens and chefs; without kitchens and chefs, there are no food suppliers. It goes hand-in-hand. In fact, many chefs move on to become sales representatives for food companies. Our culinary profession
gains exposure at these large food shows, and the competition is an added feature that helps draw people to the show.” In addition to the exposure that the CCFCC gains at events like the Sysco Regina Food Expo, the Gold Medal Plate Dinner, and the annual international reception hosted by Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food, Brears has set some goals for his two-year term as president. “I want to spark up the flare, and enlighten people about who are and what we can do, train and educate our young people, including our junior chapter, and pass the torch on to younger members of the profession who can bring new life and vision. By raising the profile of the profession and getting more people involved in our organization, members get motivated and feel like they are part of something; hopefully this will help to retain the members we have, and attract new people to do bigger and better things.”
Brears wants to see the CCFCC Regina branch build more connections, particularly with local farmers and farmers’ markets. “We want to be and buy as local as possible. I would rather buy from a neighbour next door than someone in South America. If we can buy product from local farmers where we know how the product is raised and/or fed, and get fresh product that is close at hand, that helps us out. At the same time, we can help the farmer grow and develop, and even create new products.” Brears has also played a large role in recently launching the firstever website for the CCFCC Regina branch. Competing coastto-coast himself since 1986, and captain of the Saskatchewan Culinary Team at the 2000 Culinary Olympics in Germany, Brears hopes the credibility he carries among the branch membership will help build more momentum within the organization and the culinary profession in southern Saskatchewan. “They know who I am and what I’m about, and other members are stepping forward to help out.” Brears hasn’t stopped there; he also believes that more educational sessions will bring out professional chefs and cooks more often. “I’ve been in this industry many years, there is more competition for the consumer dollar all the time, and it can be tough. As chefs, we constantly have to be creative, and come up with new things. For example, in November, we’re holding an educational on preparing pears; and soon we will hold a chocolate tempering demonstration.” More information can be found at www.ccfccregina.ca. he 10-year anniversary of Breakout West was held this year in Regina. SaskMusic, Alberta Music Industry Association, Manitoba Music, Music BC, and Music Yukon collaborate to showcase Western Canadian music to the world, educate musicians, and recognize those who have excelled in their field. The three-day event consists of a conference, festival and awards. Attracting more than 50 western Canadian performers and 350 music industry leaders and delegates from around the world, Breakout West is where music and business collide. A variety of Saskatchewan artists were present, several profiled below.
Indigo Joseph With a mandate of delivering a memorable experience to the audience, this Regina band is a creative fusion of blues, pop, dance and rock. “The more fun we have, the more fun the audience has,” says Eric. “This event is a great opportunity for us to take the reach we have regionally, and stretch it nationally. SaskMusic has been integral to our progress,” adds Eric. “It’s about knowing how to fill out a grant, all the paperwork, but it’s also about networking and shaking hands,” adds Etienne. “It’s hard to say how our music embodies the prairies,” says Eric. “Maybe it’s our do-it-yourself attitude,” offers Etienne. Whatever it is, these four gentlemen are proud to be from the Prairies, and carry that pride with them wherever they are travelling.
Blake Berglund “I tried to hone in on the art of writing a great lyric, line by line. Every line, every syllable is important,” says Blake, whose discipline led him to folk roots and country music. Since his dad and brother are cowboys, it wasn’t hard for Blake to take on that role himself. “It’s great to be in a musical genre where I can take on a ‘country-esque’ role. The community has really gotten behind me,” he says appreciatively. “To have the opportunity to play in front of new crowds, and build a personal relationship with people is amazing,” says Blake. Having been in the industry for many years, Blake knows what he owes his success to. “The three keys to success are to work hard, be good to your fans and stay true to your art,” says Blake. When it comes to hard work, Blake knows all about it. After selling a few albums to neighbours, Blake continued to go door-to-door, city-to-city, selling more than 15,000 albums. This work ethic and dedication have gone into one of his newest projects, starting his own independent label, Oceanman Records. “It’s never been a goal to win an award. It’s been a goal to be 75 and a known songwriter.”

United States and Europe. With its roots loosely placed in 2007, the band is constantly evolving and growing into their sound. “Breakout West is interesting, there are a lot of familiar faces. It’s great to have that sense of family on your home turf,” says Chris Morin. He and the rest of the band got home from Germany the night before Breakout West officially opened. “Its great to be here. Lower stress—we’re not learning how to drive in Europe or use amps from the Netherlands,” jokes Chris. “The prairies have always anchored our song writing, though it’s hard to define what a prairie sound is.”

Library Voices With seven dynamic members, Regina band Library Voices has a phenomenal stage presence and enrapturing lyrics. “Breakout West is a good meeting of the minds,” says Carl. The successful band is thrilled to have the conference and festival in Regina. “It’s home turf for us. We’re kind of the hosts, we show everyone around,” says Amanda. “SaskMusic does a great job of bringing in people from all over,” says Carl. The Saskatchewan pride is clear. “We’re kind of isolated here,” says Carl. “The winter can get pretty depressing, but that informs our worldview.” The band’s most recent album, Summer of Lust, was written in the middle of winter. “When you go somewhere, you are the band from the prairies,” says Carl. “We wouldn’t have stuck around if we weren’t proud,” jokes Amanda. “No matter what we do, we always sound like a Canadian band,” adds Carl.

Jay Semko “I had a blast at Breakout West, I think it was great,” effuses Canadian music legend Jay Semko. Known globally for his work as a singer, songwriter, bassist, composer, and voice over artist, Saskatchewanians are proud to call Jay Semko our own. While he has accomplished a great deal, including going multi-platinum with the Northern Pikes, Jay stays humble and genuine. “I really went out of my way to find new and interesting music. Finding a little more of that ‘off the beaten track’ type music led me to try writing more unique and interesting songs.” Jay found his niche in song writing. “When I started writing about things that I knew, then my writing got a lot better. I put more of myself into it, my own experiences and my own personality.” Jay is currently working on an online television/ radio show that will be debuting within the next few weeks.

J
ason Carmen has been cooking for 18 years, and has always dreamed of owning his own restaurant that produced fresh and quality cuisine. Jason, and his wife Tasha, purchased the Mediterranean Bistro in 2010, and are excited to offer Regina a taste of fresh bistro cuisine. All the cuisine is prepared from scratch using fresh ingredients, including fresh, not frozen AAA beef and fish. “Fish and beef lose some of their texture and flavour if it has been frozen. It is vital that ingredients are at the peak of their freshness and flavour when they are used in our cuisine,� explains Jason. Mediterranean Bistro only employs journeyperson chefs to work in the restaurant, and all servers are experienced in customer service. Servers are also experienced and trained in wine, and are able to suggest the perfect wine to complement any dish at the

restaurant. Chefs at the restaurant are highly trained and experienced, so they are able to understand the importance of flavour, texture and aroma. Atmosphere is also an important aspect of fine dining, and the restaurant features an authentic bistro style atmosphere that one would find in France or Italy. All the staff members at the Mediterranean Bistro are passionate about food, and are excited to pass that passion onto their customers. Servers are able to suggest wines for every dish, from appetizers, entrees to desserts. They are also able to answer any questions customers may have about the menu. The Mediterranean Bistro believes it is important to build relationships with its customers, and is committed to ensuring customers are completely satisfied with their food and service.
Mediterranean Bistro has a new menu to compliment the signature dishes created by Jason and his chefs. The new menu features the cedar plank salmon, and signature dishes such as beef wellington, fish trio, seafood chowder, sesame crusted ahi tuna served with an in-house prepared Szechuan, as well as many other delights. The menu changes with the seasons to highlight the freshest produce. They source the freshest and finest fish available, fly it in from all over the world to the restaurant, and serve it to diners in sauces and styles chosen to accentuate the flavours and textures of these extraordinary fish. Mediterranean Bistro uses French and Italian influences with a modern twist to the traditional dishes. The restaurant also prepares all the menu items from scratch, including the delectable cheesecake. They are committed to
Ahi Tuna 7-8 oz. fresh Ahi Tuna 1/tsp. wasabi paste 1 tbsp. soya sauce Sesame seeds Â
Szechuan sauce 1/2 cup canola oil 4 tbsp. fresh garlic (mince) 4 tbsp. fresh ginger (mince) 3 tsp. red chili flakes 4 tbsp. brown sugar 4 tbsp. rice vinegar 3/4 cup sesame oil
Method Make the Szechuan first by adding all the ingredients together and blend in a food processor. For the tuna, spread the wasabi paste on the fish, and soak in the soya sauce for about a minute, then roll in the sesame seeds. Heat a pan on medium to high heat with a bit of oil. Wait until the oil is almost at a smoking point, then gently place the tuna in the pan and cook for about 10 seconds. Turn the tuna over and cook for another 10 seconds for a rare tuna. Remove from the pan and set on a cutting board. Slice the tuna on the bias and plate. Drizzle the Szechuan sauce on top and enjoy.

e are the method by which the provincial government supports the commercialization of Saskatchewan music,” explains John-Paul (J.P.) Ellson, chief executive officer and general legal counsel for SaskMusic.

Technology and awareness have led to a deterioration of the traditional music industry, and music associations provide very affordable assistance where in place. “To an extent we are becoming what major labels used to be but without the profit.”
The organization works to provide opportunities and education for musicians to generate income from their art. As a non-profit, SaskMusic doesn’t make judgement calls. “We help anyone, in any genre.” The motivation differs dramatically from traditional

emphasizes J.P. “They were one of two acts we took to LA in 2011 to introduce them to the film and television market.” Another exciting band emerging out of Saskatoon, Deep Dark Woods, accompanied them on the trip. Rah Rah and Library Voices are two bands that are growing their fan base internationally with some help from SaskMusic. “With the way things have been changing, artists are finding that they’re having to become micro entrepreneurs,” explains J.P. Musicians need to understand how to market themselves, get onto a festival lineup, and
entice booking agents. SaskMusic facilitates educational opportunities, including online programming for rural acts as well. Determined, a new metal band out of Regina, is planning to apply for an album grant with SaskMusic. Going through the process of putting everything together — photos, band biography, and a music demo — is beneficial even if the band is not chosen for the grant. “We’re looking for all the opportunities we can get and to just promote ourselves,” explains Jeff Liberet, percussionist for Determined. In the half of a year they’ve been together, the band has worked very hard to create a presence, including online. They are active on their facebook page, which can be found at facebook.com/determinedproject. Aside from working with artists, SaskMusic has a busy year with events. The Canadian Country Music Awards, BreakOut West, and the Juno awards will all be held in Saskatchewan this year. “We’re coming into our busiest year ever,” says J.P. The recent Canadian Country Music Awards, or the CCMAs, were the most successful in ticket sales in CCMA history. Televised nationally, the awards were an exciting event for SaskMusic to have in the province. BreakOut West, an event put on by six western music industry associations, will be held in Regina this fall. This is a three-day event that combines an educational aspect and a festival performance. International delegates and festival buyers attend, making it a great way for acts to be discovered. “Because of online access, the pool of talent has grown geometrically,” says J.P. The 2013 Juno Awards will be in Regina, and are sure to bring a lot of music attention to the province. This annual presentation to Canadian musical artists comes with a lot of glamour and expectations, with past hosts like William Shatner, Russell Peters, and Rick Mercer, fans anxiously await the announcement of the 2013 host. “We have a recognition that music is of value to this province,” says J.P. Their mission, according to the SaskMusic website, is to “stimulate the growth and development of the Saskatchewan music industry through leadership, promotion, training, advocacy and partnership.” The committed and knowledgeable staff works to do just that. or the past 21 years, Redline Hobby has been providing local model enthusiasts with everything they need in model trains, aircraft and vehicles, not to mention ships, rockets, boats and military armour. “Models and radio-controlled (RC) planes have always been a hobby of mine”, says store owner Henry Redekop. “In 1991,

n 2006, Connie Buchanan, with the help of her husband, Randy, decided to leave her teaching career to launch Regina’s first mobile pet grooming service. With three mobile units on the road, in 2009, Zoom Zoom Groom expanded to include the “IN” Salon at 1180 Winnipeg Street. Zoom Zoom Groom offers mobile pet grooming services in addition to their “IN” salon. “Mobile grooming benefits geriatric and car-sick dogs, clients who can’t drive, or ones who have busy schedules,” says Connie. “The ‘IN’

Salon offers a venue for the clients who prefer to drop off their pets for a few hours or the day.” Cats are welcome at Zoom Zoom Groom, and there’s even a state-of-the-art cat dryer that dries cats safely–even the most difficult ones. Connie and her committed grooming team want to spread their pet grooming knowledge, and this fall, they opened their Academy of Pet Grooming. The academy is registered with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, and is the only registered pet grooming school in the province. The first session
filled quickly; students are involved in a 15-week course which covers the knowledge required to be a professional groomer. “There are few registered grooming schools in Canada,” adds Connie. “We want to stay on the leading edge of skills and techniques, and our school allows us to do that.” The next session starts January 7, 2013, and there are a few spots left. The academy also allows Zoom Zoom Groom to offer their VIP (Very Important Pooch) program. The program enables clients to receive

a free bath and brush-out between grooms. The commitment is simple: booking a small dog on a recurring eight week cycle or less, or a large dog on a recurring grooming cycle of 12 weeks or less, qualifies for a free bath and brush-out between each scheduled groom. “Our clients love this because they can leave the grooming to us, and their dog always looks and smells great,” says Connie. “Our students help with the program and get experience, and our clients and their dogs benefit from the free in-between bath and brush-out”. The VIP Program was created for current clients, but new clients who receive a supervised, student groom get a onetime 50 per cent discount. Academy students also help dogs in need; they provide free grooming to the dogs at the Regina Humane Society, making them healthier, happier and hopefully more adoptable. “It’s a great feeling to help shelter pets, and we extend this offer to all shelters,” says Connie.

Both questions are important, often related, and both are loaded. In a perfect world, I would tell my clients that they should check out the current market to establish whether a new home of their dreams is out there and affordable. I would then prepare an evaluation of their home, and provide an opinion of value. The next step is to meet with them to determine what, if anything, might have to be done to their home before it is put on the market to enable a sale at an acceptable price in an acceptable time period. I ordinarily do not like to start the actual search for a new home until my clients have a conditional sale on their home. Unfortunately, the real estate market in Regina is not a perfect world. Although quite stable, the market here does have short term ebbs and flows. This is due to a number of factors that are very unpredictable. The Regina market is affected by the seasons and even
weather conditions; late fall and winter typically cause a lull in real estate activity. This can be exacerbated by extremely cold and nasty weather, or a reprieve from the winter doldrums. Then, there are the effects of media announcements and stories that inform or misinform the public of pending real estate bubbles and financial doom and gloom. Because the regional differences in these economic crises are seldom explained properly, anxiety is created here in spite of the robust and healthy status of our regional economy. Finally, should you wait until spring to list your home? If you have the luxury of time, I would say, “positively possibly”. Prices are traditionally higher in the spring time, so this means that the home that you purchase will likely be more expensive in the spring. Also, the number of properties on the market will be greater in the spring; this means more selection for you as a buyer, but also more competition for you as a seller. COZYING UP TO FIREPLACE SAFETY BY SHELL BUSEY
T
he warm and comforting glow of a fire is a welcome treat as winter evenings bring a crisp chill to the air. Whether you curl up in front of a wood-burning or a natural gas fireplace, it’s important to know how to enjoy your fireplace safely.
Wood-burning fireplace When a wood-burning fireplace is in use, air is continually drawn out of the home and up the chimney. This air must be replaced to maintain the air balance flowing in and out of the home; this is essential for the safe operation of all fuel burning appliances. This balancing act ensures adequate air for complete combustion and ventilation of the flue gases. If the air balance is altered because of poor air supply or a blocked chimney, carbon monoxide (CO) and soot can be produced and down drafting can occur. To prevent smoke and flue gases (CO) from entering your home, follow these precautions: • When a fireplace is in use, an open damper allows the smoke and gases to exit. • Ensure an adequate fresh air supply into your home before lighting the fire. • Some fireplaces come with their own combustion air duct. If yours is not equipped with this, you must have a fresh air supply nearby, such as an open window. • Keep the fresh air supply open, even overnight, until the fire is completely out. • After the fire is out and the ashes are cold,

or when the wood-burning fireplace is not in use, close the damper. This will prevent air and heat loss up the chimney, and cold air drafts from coming down the chimney. The first line of defense against CO is the proper installation, use, maintenance and inspection of all your fuel-burning appliances. The second line of defense is a properly installed CO detector. When you are about to purchase a new CO Detector, make sure it is approved to the latest standards. Look for CSA 6.19 or CSA 6.1901 on the package. Consider installing glass doors on your wood-burning fireplace. The doors will prevent heat in your home from escaping up the chimney, saving you money on your heating bill. You may also want to consider purchasing a draft stopper; they are designed to prevent drafts from conventional woodburning fireplaces when not in use.
Natural gas fireplace Natural gas fireplaces can operate at more than 60 per cent efficiency, whereas a typical wood-burning fireplace operates at 10 per cent efficiency. Efficiency refers to the amount of heat that is extracted from
the flame, and is used to heat the home. Remember to have regular inspections performed on natural gas fireplaces, along with all natural gas appliances.
Types of natural gas fireplaces Fireplace Insert: natural gas fireplace that fits inside an existing masonry fireplace. Natural Vent Fireplace: natural gas fireplace that has a type-B vent (a four inch manufacturer-recommended venting pipe used to exhaust the combustion gases of fireplaces, hot water heaters and other small natural gas appliances) going up a fireplace chase (the enclosure on the outside of the house that the metal chimney runs through). Direct Vent Fireplace: natural gas fireplace that uses a single outlet, dual pipe system to draw combustion air and vent exhaust. The vent is typically installed directly behind the fireplace or slightly above and behind. Free Standing Fireplace: wood stove appearance, with the benefits of natural gas; this can be either natural-vent or direct-vent.
Other Options Pellet Stoves and Inserts. They are environmentally friendly, extremely clean
burning and cost effective. Pellets are made from 100 per cent waste sawdust, dried and compressed, creating an ideal heating fuel. Electric Fireplaces. This is a great option if you live in an apartment, and you want the look and feel of a fireplace when installing a gas unit is simply not an option. While they are not meant to heat a large area, they do provide some added comfort to a room. FLR

s a kid, Christy Dunbar would always shrug her shoulders and answer, “I don’t know” when anyone asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. Throughout her childhood, she had a real affinity for putting things together and making a space feel like home. She didn’t pay too much attention to what she now considers a full-blown passion, but her interest in design kept pulling her in that direction, and she ended up enrolling in interior design at college. After graduating, Christy worked for six years at an architectural and design firm that specialized in commercial design. While

she loved the design process and seeing it all come together, large spaces always felt impersonal to her. “My heart was in residential design,” says Christy. Christy’s career took a major shift in 2007. Her love for design had to take a back seat to family, but it ended up being the best thing that could have happened. She had time to reflect on where she wanted to go with her career, and really understand how she wanted to live her good life. She started House Envy Interiors in 2012, specializing in residential design.

The store was opened in 2005 by Colleen Harron, a teacher with over 30 years’ experience with children from kindergarten to grade nine. She is committed to providing educational, fun toys for children from birth to adult, including senior citizens. The products she sells develop all five senses, and encourage critical thinking. All staff members at the store have experience with children as teachers, childcare workers or parents. Colleen is a member of the

BreTT WilSOn’S Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes By Devin Pacholik PHOTOS heather Fritz

rett Wilson is a role model for Canadian business men and women, and is known largely for his former role on CBC’s award-winning Dragons’ Den and his latest show from Slice, Risky Business. As a University of Saskatoon alumnus, Wilson has gone on to become a member of the Order of Canada and the chairman of both Canoe Financial and his Prairie Merchant Corporation. Wilson’s legacy is also marked by his incredible philanthropy, generating tens of millions of dollars for many charities and social programs. He has been presented scads of awards and honours for his incredible success in commerce as one of the leading investors in the country. Now, Wilson can add another title to his name: author. His first book, Redefining Success: Still Making Mistakes, is about how to re-evaluate our personal definitions of success, according to the publisher, Penguin Press. Through trial and error, he has discovered that health, family, and friends are the foundations for real, enduring success, both in business and in life. The book is about his journey, which continues to teach him this crucial lesson. As the author says, “Though my book is titled ‘Redefining Success,’ the subtitle is just as important—’Still Making Mistakes.’” Below is an excerpt from Redefining Success, in which Wilson discusses the importance of integrity in the professional world. As the chances of greater financial gain and power increase, so too do the temptations and follies of immorality:
Developing a Moral Compass (excerpt from Redefining Success)
“A regular compass consistently guides geographical direction. A moral compass is a mental process that consistently points a person in a particular direction in life. A moral compass is an internal tool. Some might refer to it as a conscience or a feeling that consistently guides personal beliefs and actions. From my experience, most people either have a strong ethical sense when they start out in business or they develop one along the way. Watching people suffer from the consequences of bad or unethical choices will eventually raise the question, is it really worth it? And the wise ones soon discover that unethical actions or values never are worth pursuing.
“The most important asset you will ever have, and the one that appreciates the most, is the human capital you hire, develop and retain.” WBW
For me, the lesson about sticking to a strong moral compass—with a focus on doing what’s right—came when I was starting out. As I mentioned, early in my career I worked closely with someone who was sadly lacking moral standards. In fact, if it is possible for anyone to be completely devoid of ethics, he came close. He treated his employees unfairly, without respect, honesty

or encouragement, and he certainly didn’t deal squarely with his clients. Within a few weeks of joining his firm, I discovered that he had a willingness to share confidential information around town when it might serve his own self-interest. I realized that being associated with him was not wise, and I got out as soon as I could extricate myself from that situation. Unfortunately for me, that took almost eighteen, miserable, frustrating months. That experience helped me get clarity about what kind of businessperson I wanted to be “when I grew up”—I wanted to be someone who is both fair and respectful, who negotiates a square deal with mutual interests in mind, who invests in people rather than projects, who follows through on promises and who delivers quality service every time. I wanted to be someone for whom a handshake creates a bond much stronger and more enduring or meaningful than a written contract. My time with my immoral colleague was influential in guiding me to my moral compass. Thanks to my upbringing, by parents who lived by strong ethical principles, I have always enjoyed a heightened sense of awareness of what is right or wrong. I didn’t always pay attention to my moral compass in the early days of my various careers, but I actually did find it over time and that moral compass has certainly strengthened with time. I’ve seen what happens to people who operate ethically in business and life and those who don’t. Some of my own mistakes confirmed what I already knew—that the consequences of flexible or misguided moral or ethical standards are just too dire for me. Having a strong principled foundation is not the only way to succeed. Sure, there are those who have achieved material wealth without principles. But, to me, an honest path is a worthy path and this is the best path to success. Success is simply more sustainable and rewarding when it’s achieved without jeopardizing one’s integrity. You will sleep better at night. You will gain financial success without losing the respect of your employees, your customer or your competitors. More importantly to most of us, you will secure the respect of your own children, the ultimate judges of your actions and legacy.”

Fans of Dragon’s Den generally note Wilson presented himself as a man of compassion and moral rigour — a stark contrast between him and some of his former colleagues, namely Kevin O’ Leary. The two often butted heads on the issue of economics versus ethics — O’ Leary opting for dollars and Wilson for altruism. He continues to show us we can have both.

By September 30, 2012, annual new business startups were at 159, and the city has received high rankings in recent studies released by KPMG and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. In 2011, Alberta Venture magazine shortlisted Moose Jaw as one of the 25 best communities outside of Alberta to do business. Moose Jaw also serves as the western anchor of the Moose Jaw–Regina Industrial Corridor, one of the largest economic regions in the province accounting for 25 per cent of Saskatchewan’s GDP and workforce. mega projects in the area are driving the city’s boom; some are under construction, while others are slated to start soon. Sod recently turned for the $3.25 billion K+S Potash Canada Mine and Yara, a world exporter of nitrogen fertilizer, plans to double the size of its plant. A $25 million shopping plaza in the old Civic Centre site is under construction, and the new $61 million Mosaic Place is generating economic spin-offs such as more restaurants and hotels.

Health and education amenities also abound in this city, and plans are underway for a new $100 million state-of-the-art primary health care facility. At SIAST, Palliser Campus, one of the province’s four major technical-trade training centres, planning is underway for a SIAST student residence, linked to an international program located there.

Moose Jaw`s quality of life is also supported by many community-minded organizations and businesses. Among them is the Business Women of Moose Jaw, an active group that supports local businesswomen, and also raises funds for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation. Another group of fine retailers will run the All Decked Out event on November 30 and December 1, consisting of holiday home tours, reception, fashion show and a shopping extravaganza that includes holiday promotions and discounts. Proceeds from this second annual event will go to Hunger in Moose Jaw, a non-profit organization that supports children and various other community resource programs.
