BRAIN for new, healthy habits

FASHION & WELLNESS
The three pounds of grey matter between your ears is your most valuable possession. Whether you want to be healthier, more productive or have less stress, your brain will determine if you reach your goal. Why is that?
Y
our brain is the starting point for everything you want to do, be or have in your life. According to Terry Small, also known as The Brain Guy, your brain’s first priority is to be safe and comfortable. That means your brain wants what it had yesterday, what it deems to be normal and comfortable. Like being dragged out of a sweet dream while curled up in a feather duvet, your brain desperately wants to hold on to that cozy, comfy feeling any time you want to make a change.
exercise routine and your brain says, “Not today, I’m too tired,” that is a thought virus. Next, reveal the cost of that virus. In this case it might be, “I’m not working out consistently and that negatively impacts my health.” Finally, reprogram your brain with a better thought such as, “My goal is to exercise three times every week and I’m sticking to it.”
For example, if you want to start a new exercise routine, your brain will most likely respond with resistance in the form of thoughts like “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I’m so tired!”
Consistently following this three-step process — recognize, reveal, reprogram — will activate the brain’s self-directed neuroplasticity and create a new, habitual thought that supports your goals. And it’s those habitual thoughts that can make you or break you.
Research proves we can direct changes in our brains through a process called self-directed neuroplasticity. To simplify, think of your brain like a computer: it handles information based on its current programs to produce the results you see in your life.
Every goal can be broken down into a habit or series of habits that must be maintained and built upon in order to reach the chosen destination. It’s those small, daily steps that eventually lead to success.
You can choose to reprogram your brain by selecting and maintaining focus on thoughts that better serve you until they become habitual. Habits of thought that don’t serve you are as damaging to your progress as a virus is to your computer. Though these “thought viruses” may be disguised as normal and harmless, they can easily sabotage your best intentions. The first step in protecting yourself from a “thought virus” is to recognize it. When you wake up early to start that new
difficult. Remember, that is your brain being uncomfortable and resisting the change you want to make. As you keep at it, you will create momentum and soon find the new habit as deeply entrenched as the old one once was.
This is why top performers focus on doing the most important things on a consistent basis. The best salespeople are contacting prospects every day. The best athletes have a regular workout routine and stick to it religiously. The same principle applies to top performers in virtually any field. When concentrating on continually practising productive habits, high performance is a predictable outcome. Getting started on building new, healthy habits can be frustrating and

The world is a different place than it was 40 to 50 years ago. We’re being exposed to substances the body has never seen before. Since the Second World War, close to 80,000 new synthetic chemicals have entered our environment and many of these have never even been tested for safety. Our cells are exposed to millions of pounds of toxic chemicals in a single year including mercury, PCBs, styrene, dioxins, acrylamide and methyl bromide, just to name a few. Because of our environment, we easily overwhelm our natural detoxification process beyond its limit. Toxic overload robs us of our energy and well-being and compromises our body’s ability to ward off disease. Diet AnD lifeStYle fACtorS Many diet and lifestyle factors increase our level of toxicity, such as eating sugar, refined foods, hydrogenated and trans fats, food additives and preservatives, artificial colours and flavours, as well as coffee and alcohol. Other factors include a sluggish liver, the use of prescription or over-the-counter drugs, chemicallyderived grooming products and perfumes,

chronic constipation, lack of exercise, and the list goes on. PlAn Your SPrinG CleAn Spring is the best time of the year for liver and gall bladder function — two major organs of elimination. The liver filters blood, hormones and waste products, while our kidneys play a crucial role in the elimination of excess fluids and toxins, as well as excreting the by-products of protein metabolism, urea and ammonia. Timing is crucial to the success of any detox. Choose a time when there is downtime in your social and work calendar. It’s always a great idea to get extra relaxation and rest while cleansing. WHAt to exPeCt Most of my clients report, above all else, feeling more energy and alertness. Many find they sleep more soundly and experience better digestion and easier elimination. I’ve personally seen amazing improvements in skin health in cases of acne or eczema. Improvements in joint stiffness and allergy symptoms are common. Long-term benefits can include weight loss, better resistance to colds and flu and improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Consult with a qualified nutrition professional who can help you select just the right detox protocol for truly the most important spring cleaning project of all!
The Amazing Power of
SAUNAS
GOOD HEALTH AND A JOYFUL LIFE FOR YOUR BODY AND SOUL
W
orldwide, most people will agree good health is one of the greatest things in life. The benefits of a sauna can be your first step towards a healthy and long life. Natural skin aging begins from 25 years old, when cells begin to receive less oxygen. Saunas activate blood circulation, feeding the cells with fresh oxygen; this allows the skin to become more elastic and resistant to the harmful effects of the sun and cold. Saunas prevent skin wrinkles, promote toxin elimination, strengthens immunity and treats diseases of the joints, as well as stimulates metabolism and the elimination processes. Physiologists say thermal contrast procedures create “happy hormones” in your blood — this is why people feel calm and happy after sauna use. Couples and families who use a sauna together experience increased bonding, love and health.

Magic & Mystery OF THE
ANCIENT MAYA By K.A. Beattie Photos Courtesy of Oceania Cruises
The Mayan civilization is for the most part associated with the spectacular circular calendar, astronomy and, we can’t forget, the sacrifices so embellished by Hollywood. Quite honestly, I had no idea of the extent of the Mayan civilization and the incredible accomplishments that resulted from such a civilized, artistic, hardworking, industrious society.

aturally, when travelling in Mayan country, one expects to see the ruins and many step pyramids of Tikal and numerous authentic archaeological sites, but the plants are very nice, too. The association of plants and spirituality as medicines in the Mayan culture was very strong and still exists to this day. Traditional wisdoms seem not to have been obscured by synthesised medicines, tourism and modern day technology. This is not to say all that we take for granted doesn’t exist. It does, but there is a cultural reverence for ancestral knowledge and a deep appreciation for what Mother Nature continues to provide. A visit to a local market in Santo Tomas, Guatemala will reveal first hand what the local population considers “plant medicine.”
Granted, there are a great many uncommon looking specimens, packages and bundles of strange foliage, roots and bark bits from peculiar trees, but all very familiar to the still vibrant Mayan population. Our ship, Oceania’s Regatta, made several ports of call along the coast of Central America, allowing guests many opportunities to experience a real, close up look at the modern Mayan culture as well as a peek into their past. Shore excursions in Cozumel and Costa Maya Mexico, Santo Tomas, Guatemala, Belize City, Belize and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica wove an intriguing cultural fabric, bringing to life the ancient Maya culture reflecting today’s society as well. Fascinating discussions and tours with local guides through ruins, rain forests,

back roads and beaches left us tired, but chocked full of new information and more questions. Of considerable fascination for me, being a plant person, was the use of plants for medicines and spiritual healing. The goddess of medicine, healing, childbirth and fertility named Ixchel, is depicted as a child, maiden, mother and crone, almost identical to the Celtic belief. She wears a headdress of a serpent and holds a plant in her palm and is easily found on a wall of hieroglyphs. There are hundreds of icons representing everything from a single letter of the alphabet to full concepts. Oceania’s Regatta is a marvelous “small ship” and one of our favourites for many reasons. Like the rest of the fleet, the service not only aboard but pre and post-cruise is exemplary. Consider any business with at least 45 different nationalities all working harmoniously day in and day out — rather like the UN without the translators. Every time we

see them, our stateroom staff greet us with enormous smiles and a genuine salutations, not simply the mantra of so many North American retail staff: “Have a nice day!” Each staff person proudly wears a metal nametag stating his or her first name and home country — it’s a great conversation starter. In the grand dining room the wait staff is crisp, professional and buzzing about like worker bees in a lavish hive, never bumping into each other. We are most comfortable dressing in country club casual clothes for the evening meal, such as a golf shirt and long dress trousers. There is no need to pack formal or fancy evening wear — unless you prefer to do so. From time to time, I don a sports jacket and maybe a tie, but again the choice is yours. There are also no prescribed dining times. You can eat dinner when you wish between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.. Alternatively, the buffet at the rear of the ship provides a similar menu, and you
DINING, arts & recreation
can dine alfresco if desired. Failing all of that, perhaps after a long day of jungle trudging, rooms service in the stateroom allows you to dine in whatever you please, put in a movie or DVD, and just chill. We have discovered just how much we didn’t know about the ancient Mayan civilization, which has added more fuel to our fire. Once home we will be pouring over our photos and literature in an attempt to become more familiar for our next excursion to Central America. Consider joining us this October as we sail with Oceania from Istanbul to Dubai, and thereafter on to India, Madagascar and South Africa. For the time of your life, simply contact a travel agent or Oceania Cruises yourself and see what the world has to offer. fter enjoying his work doing carpentry in the summers, Nathan Shindle decided to pursue it as a full-time trade. In April of 2011, Nathan decided to open his own business, and Ridgerunner Construction was born. Having always been interested in framing, after nearly a decade of working for another employer, he decided he was ready to turn the key on his own business. Now Springside and area has a knowledgeable, trustworthy and reliable framing business to depend on. “I really enjoy the challenges that come with the carpentry trade,” says Nathan. “When we leave a project it’s done properly and ready for the next trade to come in and do their work. Framing is the bones of your house, providing the structural necessities for a solid home. Without sound framing, your house won’t look good or be the sturdy, long-standing structure you need it to be. It’s essential to hire reputable and wellinformed contractors to provide you with a rigid base. Ridgerunner Construction has taken framing on as their specialty, and are the best choice for the job. “We want our customers to feel relaxed and not have to worry if the job is getting done right,” says Nathan. With Ridgerunner, you know the job is being performed to an elite set of standards. The company holds high expectations for themselves, well above industry regulations. The experienced team puts in this dedication because they value and appreciate each of their customers. “They’re our friends and neighbours,” says Nathan. Most of their business comes through word-of-mouth referrals. Throughout the process, Ridgerunner will keep you abreast of what is going on. Having an open line of communication is very important, and Nathan only hires personable and friendly staff. “Our staff are eager to learn, energetic and like to be outside,” remarks Nathan. The friendly staff are always working to expand their knowledge base and skill set. “We’re always up for a new challenge.” Whether you’re looking to build your first home or the house of your dreams, call Nathan and the amiable team at Ridgerunner Construction. Seven Tips for Home Sellers
an old toilet or buffing and re-staining kitchen cabinets will help sell the home, then make those types of updates, but keep personal preferences in check. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent can help you prioritize and remain objective.

I
f you’re thinking about selling your home in 2015, here are some decisions that could help boost your chances of a quick sale.
1. Avoid drastic design changes. The best approach to preparing your home for sale is to declutter and depersonalize so potential buyers can envision themselves in your home. If repainting a bright purple wall, replacing
22
FineLifestyles
Parkland Saskatchewan
2. Stop neglecting the drippy faucet. Issues that appear minor may actually be a symptom of a larger problem. Addressing issues like plumbing leaks, poor ventilation and cracks in walls helps to avoid surprises from an inspection report and avoid the delay or even cancellation of a sale. When you have the information, you can either make the fixes or work with your agent to adjust pricing during negotiations. 3. Price my home reasonably. It’s understandable to think your home is the best on the block and worth more than all the others, especially if you’ve invested in key upgrades and remodels. While you might be right, the only way to truly know is to consider recent sales of comparable homes in your area. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent can provide you with the latest information and help you list at an appropriately competitive price. 4. Make my home inviting. An eye catching home begins with its curb appeal. The condition of your home’s exterior is a big part of getting buyers in the door. Maintaining the yard, sweeping the porch and driveway, replacing the tattered welcome mat or missing house numbers and removing clutter all help to improve curb appeal.
HOME & aUTO
5. Thin out the clutter. Decide what stays and what goes before you put your home on the market. By the time the forsale sign goes up, the home should be clutter free. You can either toss things you don’t want, sell these items or move them to storage. Personal items such as your prized knick-knack collection, clothes overflowing out of closets and family photos should all be removed. You want all closets and cupboards to appear as spacious as possible. 6. Clean like I’ve never cleaned before. It’s easy to focus on cleaning the major surfaces, high-traffic areas and areas that are visible. But don’t forget the dust on top of the refrigerator, the slats on the window blinds, cabinets under the kitchen or bathroom sink and cobwebs behind the guest-room door. Potential buyers will look in every nook and cranny, so be sure to take the time to look high and low for dirt. 7. Plan my next step. Determine where you’ll go next before your home goes up for sale. Are you prepared to move if your home sells quickly? Although it might not be typical, a quick sale is certainly possible. On the other hand, are you prepared if your home doesn’t sell quite as fast? Be sure to talk with your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent about your relocation needs and timeline. Call 306.783.6666 to find a local RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent who will help you meet your real estate goals.

WHY USE A PROFESSIONAL RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty Agent? By Courtney Tait
With extensive technology available nowadays, it may seem cheaper and more convenient to sell or buy your house independently. However, RE/MAX Blue Chip REALTORS速 bring in-depth market knowledge and widespread realty experience to the home buying and home selling processes, which makes for a much more enjoyable and productive realty experience.

Agents give solid advice on staging and getting your house ready for a showing. They also handle negotiations on important factors such as price, financing terms, inspections and inclusions or exclusions to the sale. Between the initial offer and the settlement, questions and issues often arise. The necessary paperwork alone can be overwhelming for most sellers. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent is the best person to objectively help you resolve these issues and move the transaction to completion. BUYING Real estate agents are essentially your personal expert advisors — they are there to help you through the process of buying a new home with the least amount of stress. REALTORS® take the time to explain how the process works (the timelines, financing, closing costs, possible inspections and more), and this helps to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent will help with market information and neighbourhood pros and cons, as well as affordability and what is realistically available in your price range. Once you are ready to view houses, the agent will help with history and background information. “Our RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agents have been in the business or the area long enough to be able to anticipate issues with certain homes or properties and are able to help you avoid unnecessary problems.”
Y
ou don’t need to know everything about buying and selling real estate if you hire a real estate professional who does. RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agents are professionally educated and fully trained to guide you through the sales process with the least amount of risk possible. SELLING Many people have the perception that selling a house with a REALTOR® costs more money and think they can save pennies selling their house themselves. However, as Doris Shank affirms, “At RE/MAX®, we can show you how to
keep more money in your pocket using a REALTOR® over selling your property on your own.” One of the biggest benefits of using a RE/MAX Blue Chip REALTOR® to sell your house is their acute knowledge of market pricing and other factors that affect property values, which is essential to making a good sale. Your REALTOR® will provide you with accurate and up-todate information on pricing and market activity, including details of the price, financing and terms and conditions of competing properties. These are key factors in getting your property sold at the best price, quickly and with minimum hassle.
HOME & auto
When choosing a REALTOR®, it is most important to look for someone you enjoy working with and who understands your housing goals and needs. Go to open houses and meet the agents or stop in at the office. Remember, the basis for an agent’s success and continued career in real estate is referrals. This emphasis gives agents strong incentives to make sure clients are happy and satisfied. When you hire a RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty Agent, you get professional and personalized service from start to finish. At RE/MAX®, you can dream with your eyes open and leave the details to the professionals.

DECKED OUT By Apolline Lucyk
I
magine entertaining friends and family on your deck this summer. Whether it’s morning, afternoon or evening, you’re ready to handle a few or a crowd. Maybe you want to simply soak up the sun with a good book or enjoy an enchanting quiet evening in the complete privacy of your space. Decks have become desirable outdoor living spaces, thanks to new design and construction trends — and many other optional extras. Larger decks provide more space for patio furniture and expanded living spaces, often including lounging areas, dining and kitchen areas, bars and fire pits. Gazebos and partial roofs are also popular additions. BEAUTIFUL RAILING OPTIONS Deck railing options continue to increase. Wide and narrow picket railings remain as popular as ever, and are available in a wide variety of colours. Gate options are especially nice for people with young children or pets. Topless railings are a beautiful addition, especially at a cottage or beach house. These railings are usually made from clear glass, so it appears as if there is no railing at all, yet people are still safe from falling if the deck is elevated. “If your deck overlooks a lake, or has a beautiful view,
HOME & auto
this is a perfect railing option for you,” says Wanda Adams from Best Price Railing. WIND WALLS Wind walls are also a popular addition. Wind walls are six-foothigh glass panels which block out the wind, separate your deck from your neighbours’ yard and block out the wind. The glass panels are usually made from privacy glass, a clouded glass which lets the light through while maintaining privacy. Glass panels come in different patterns and are also available in aluminum. GAZEBOS AND PARTIAL ROOFS Gazebos and other partially covered structures offer welcome shade on hot summer days, protection from rain and drizzle, and also can help retain heat in the winter. They provide relaxed lounging space with room for chairs or tables underneath; if equipped with a goodquality heater or safe fire pit in the winter, you can be cozy in your backyard all year long. Equipping your deck with a partial roof, pergola, gazebo or an umbrella will come in handy on sunny days, in unexpected rain or drizzle, and for your backyard retreat in winter months. BUILT-IN SEATING AND TABLES Many decks now incorporate built-in bench options — including benches which

can enjoy relaxed evenings with family and friends in your outdoor space. A fire pit, fireplace or even pizza oven can become the focal point of many an outdoor evening of lounging and entertaining. LIGHTING, HOT TUBS AND MORE Well-done lighting is essential to any outdoor space and to beautifying a deck that can be enjoyed by friends and family. Disburse lighting options around your deck and add lighting options to areas that require it — for example, near an outdoor kitchen. LED lighting is popular for yearround enjoyment. A hot tub provides a relaxing escape from the business of the home, and locating it on or beside your deck makes for easy access. Fountains also bring a soothing and elegant atmosphere to your deck and backyard. Both fountains and hot tubs can add enchanting lighting options. The options for deck design and construction are endless. Let your imagination run wild as you get “all decked out” for summer and the year ahead!
line the deck attached to the railing — and built-in eating areas. Also popular are tables which fit on to your railings. “These tables are perfect for barbecuing, and can be flipped down when you aren’t using them,” says Adams. POPULAR FLOORING MATERIALS “The most popular flooring materials for decks now are composite wood and vinyl,” comments Adams, because they require no maintenance. Wooden decks need to be stained periodically, but when you choose a composite wood or vinyl deck, the only maintenance required is occasionally sweeping away dust and dirt. Composite wood and vinyl decks come in a variety of different colours, many which resemble real wood. FIRE PITS AND FIREPLACES Why not incorporate a fireplace or fire pit into your deck? A variety of models exist that can fit perfectly into your deck design. It is wise to have this heat source so you

And we do the same at pick-up because it’s supposed to be a fun, relaxing time. There’s no hassle for the clients,” says MacLean. Just 20 to 30 minutes in a hot tub can reduce stress, sore muscles and aches and pains, but it also provides a fun way

to relax and socialize. MacLean says the benefits from hot tubs are different for everybody, but they are all important. Once they’ve rented and realized how much they enjoy them, many decide to invest in their own hot tub. Three years ago, MacLean decided to offer hot tubs for sale as well and brought on the Bullfrog Spas brand. “We did a lot of research before we made this decision,” says MacLean. “And there’s really no competition. Their technology and JetPak Therapy System puts them in the forefront of the industry.”

The JetPaks are removable and interchangeable with 16 different types of massages to choose from. They allow owners to customize their hot tub to provide a unique and enjoyable massage in whichever seat of the tub they prefer. If a homeowner wants to re-design the hot tub, it’s just a matter of changing the JetPaks and they will immediately have a brand new experience. Every purchase of a new JetPak comes with a new warranty. Bullfrog Spas have up to 90 per cent less plumbing than traditional spas and offer the only leak-proof design on the market. They also require the least amount of service and are the most energy-efficient spas you can buy. Bringing the Bullfrog line to the Parkland area and operating in Yorkton, the area where MacLean and his wife were both raised, means a lot to them. “We don’t serve a large population,” he says, “but we serve a large area. Our clients come to us from a radius of about 100 kilometres and we really appreciate that.” Soakers offers free delivery on sales, warranty work and repairs, and hot tub maintenance programs, including filter cleaning either for those on holidays or as a year-round service. Hot tub rentals are booking a month or two in advance for the summer, so if you have something fabulous to celebrate, call to make arrangements for your hot tub today.

technology that make his operation more efficient. This includes practices such as stand-grazing a herd on corn in the winter, which means reduced labour, energy consumption and time constraints on the farm. Using radio frequency identification technology allows farmers to precisely monitor their cows, charting their productivity and ensuring a better end result for their hard work. Farmers and associations are now working closely with universities and researchers to create an even better product for consumers. Hull emphasizes the need for support and collaboration in agriculture, “Everyone in this industry needs to work together to achieve success. If one part of the agricultural industry fails, the whole chain does, from farmer to retailer.” Like many in Saskatchewan, Hull is a strong advocate for Canadian agriculture. of farmers in his family, Simpson has inspired both his children and grandchildren to become ranchers with his passion for agriculture, a legacy he has also spread through the community. In January, Simpson and his wife Patricia were recognized for their contributions to their community and the livestock industry with a scroll of honour at the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference in Regina. Involved in 4-H, hockey, curling, Ukrainian dancing, figure skating and cadets over the years, there are few in the community who haven’t met the couple from Theodore. JOHN SIMPSON Best known for his Angus beef stock and extensive community work, John Simpson always wanted to be a farmer. “I can’t ever remember not wanting to become a farmer; it gets in your blood,” says Simpson. As the fourth generation
During its fledgling years, Simpson also helped organize the Harvest Showdown and has been a competitor for the 26 years the event has existed, “I am really proud to see the showdown succeed,” says Simpson. “It’s become an important event not just for farmers, but for the
community.” With a more traditional approach to farming, Simpson harvests silage and tends to his farm of just under 1,000 calving and background stock. Raising purebred Red Angus stock for 20 years, the Simpson farm switched to commercial Angus cattle after the BSE outbreak — commonly known as Mad Cow Disease. Farming isn’t without its challenges — something Simpson is well aware of following decades in the industry. “The environment, disease and economics will really challenge future farmers. Farmers need to be a little tougher than other people to survive in this industry,” says Simpson. “You really have to love farming and ranching. There are a lot of other fields more profitable than agriculture, but I really love working with the cows.”

The Discovery Process and Your Values to Money Discovery Process = Advice, Support & Encouragement With Clear Simple Solutions I was seeing wonderful people in distress over this event. n 2010 during a rainstorm that created a flood and major water issues to 49 per cent of the homes in Yorkton, I realized there is so much more to the world of economics than just investing.
We all begin our relationship and connection to money with feelings of fear and scarcity. The discovery process provides a straightforward guidance for personal growth and tools you need to grow to a place of prosperity and love – no matter how much money you are making today. The discovery process is a nine step plan to create a personal roadmap of clarity and understanding in order to have a healthy relationship to money. Many people tend to focus on a few areas but neglect others, creating imbalance and frustration, which blocks us from wealth, prosperity and love. Within the nine domains of money framework, we are able to talk about money as a system and to understand the concept of wealth and prosperity in a holistic way, which I truly believe has been a missing element in the world of money. Through the discovery process and the nine domains of money, we can see that wealth and prosperity are really about a state of being and not just about money in the bank.

We all have strengths and weaknesses with money, but decisions must be made whether you’re an individual or in a partnership. Our relationship to money individually and collectively makes a bigger difference than we could ever imagine. y 1965, the year Yorkton Co-op celebrated its 25th anniversary, several retail Co-ops (Saltcoats, Springside, Theodore, Dubuc and Bangor) realized the efficiencies of working together and had amalgamated with Yorkton. The following year, retail operations were in a serious deficit. 1967 welcomed Yorkton Co-op’s 10,000th member. The same year, it was determined the parking lot at the Third Avenue store was inadequate. The board of directors finalized plans for the rebuilding of the Saltcoats bulk plant after a fire had destroyed the original outlet. An agreement was reached on

the development of Federated Co-op’s fertilizer plant in Yorkton on Canadian Pacific Rail property, which Yorkton Coop would operate. In December, the association held its first district annual membership meeting under the new structure of a delegate body; this meant the board of directors was elected by 47 members across four districts. Leading up to 1969, operations continued to suffer and the association lost $38,000 on total sales of $3.1 million. There were 50 full-time employees and between 60 and 75 part-time employees, depending on the season. The association continued to operate the Shopping Centre, the First

Member equity was at a very low 20 per cent of assets. By year-end, the Furniture Mart was moved to the shopping centre and integrated with the hardware department. The high cost of equipment and manpower in the distribution of petroleum led to changes in the delivery of farm fuels, by switching to larger units and eliminating two trucks. By 1972, operations were improving, with additional savings and a net savings of $143,000. Operational changes for
efficiencies, a new credit policy and investment in aging assets reflected the optimism of an improving economy. On April 22, 1972, Kamsack Co-op became part of Yorkton Co-op. 1973 saw all time sales reach a high of $5.7 million. Membership equity had strengthened to 30 per cent from the low of 18 per cent and 22 per cent in the two previous years. Facilities were in great shape and as a monumental increase in petroleum gallons made it imperative for the association to upgrade its rolling stock, five new trucks were added to the delivery fleet.
A glimpse at Yorkton Co-op’s Next 10 years 1965
The retail was enjoying unprecedented sales growth with inflation rates of 11 per cent in 1973, 12 per cent in 1974 and 10 per cent in 1975. By 1975, members’ equity had reached 40 per cent of assets for the first time since 1961, inventories had climbed over the $1 million mark and the association was averaging 450 new members per year. With the association on a roll, the bulk plant facility was upgraded, and petroleum storage at Dubuc was upgraded with new loading racks and arms, as well as two additional 5,000 gallon storage tanks. The service station at Kamsack received new underground storage tanks and the Yorkton shopping centre had a new roof installed. Financial statements continued to show increased sales and savings. For the first time since the early ‘60s, the Co-op had achieved earnings for three consecutive years. Soon, as interest rates climbed, debt grew and expenses increased, the scales would tip to trying times. Watch for the next issue to see what direction the association was forced to take as high interest rates threatened its existence. How To Protect Your Company’s Data
Peter Heider Owner ITSouth.ca Ltd. Yorkton 306.783.2662 service@itsouth.ca www.itsouth.ca
1. Conduct a security audit. Knowing what parts of your business are vulnerable and what data you have that needs to be protected is important — if you are not aware of these things, you can’t properly secure them. It is critical you work with a professional to audit your entire IT infrastructure, including computers, network and mobile devices, to determine what you need to do to prevent hackers from accessing your valuable network.
44
FineLifestyles
Parkland Saskatchewan
2. Train your staff members and make them aware of the important role they play in security. Your staff is your front line of defense when it comes to security. Hackers can access your network remotely and siphon off data without setting foot in your office. Vigilant employees can ensure human error — a big cause of data security breaches — is limited and minimalized. 3. Use strong and complex passwords. Out of convenience, many of us use simple passwords that are easy for hackers to guess. When we have complicated passwords, a simple “dictionary attack” — an attack by a hacker using an automated tool that uses a combination of dictionary words and numbers to crack passwords — can’t happen. Never write passwords down; commit them to memory. Regularly change passwords. 4. Encrypt your data. Encryption is a great security tool to use in case your data is stolen. For example, if your hard disk is stolen or you lose your USB thumb drive, whoever accesses the data won’t be able to read it when it’s encrypted. 5. Back up. Remember, security is only one half of complete protection. It’s vital you also implement a proper backup strategy for your business. If your data is corrupted or lost, how can you recover it? You can only recover data if it’s backed up. When was your last restore test?
BUSINESS & COMMUNITY
6. Implement security policies. You must have clear and concise policies in place for staff to follow to ensure they are working in a secure environment. Insist all notebook computers connected to the corporate network have security software. 7. Protect your mobile work force. Today, more than ever before, your staff works away from the office and away from the protection of your secure network. It is essential all mobile technology, connected wirelessly, is as secure as possible. 8. Introduce a multiple-securitytechnology solution. Viruses that corrupt data are not the only security threat. Hackers, and their attacks, are more sophisticated than ever, and it is critical to have multiple layers of security technology on all your devices. This multiple security will block attacks on your network and/or alert you to a problem so you or your IT expert can take the appropriate action. ------Securing your business’s data is not easy; it takes expertise. Check the credentials of your IT expert to ensure he/she is accredited and up-to-date on the latest technology. Your data is valuable. Protect it by being proactive, not reactive.

Fostering Successful

A PAG is made up of approximately eight to 12 family business operators who get together once a month for a half-day and work through CAFE Canada’s proprietary meeting format. “It’s like having your own advisory board to help you deal with personal, family and business issues in a highly confidential and safe environment,” says MacDonald. There are two main reasons members join CAFE. One is a need for help in managing family dynamics, communication and conflict that may stem from the business. The second is for help in transitioning the management and ownership of the business to the next generation. “When you’re dealing with a family, lines of communication may or may not be open,” says MacDonald. “One of the realities is that with each successive generation, people have different points of view, values, expectations and objectives. As a result, all kinds of issues can come to the surface that need to be managed.” Most CAFE Canada members are involved in multiple generation businesses — second generation or more. But 40 per cent are first generation family businesses that want to learn how to manage family dynamics and transition the business properly.
That’s where the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFE) Canada comes in. The national non-profit memberbased association was established in 1983 with the purpose of providing support, education and resources to those involved in family enterprise.

Executive director, Paul MacDonald, says, “We want to help them succeed as a family by helping them manage the sometimes complicated interface between family and business.”
The organization offers comprehensive online resources, workshops and seminars. Its annual two-and-a-half day national symposium covers a number of topics relevant to those who own and operate family enterprise. Fundamentally, CAFE’s key value proposition is participation in a personal advisory group (PAG).

CAFE Canada members often tell MacDonald the organization was transformational for them. “In many cases, CAFE helped save the family and led to the successful transition of the business to the next generation,” he says. “You can’t underestimate the power of a forum where you get to speak to other family business owners who have been down the same path as you and can speak to their own experience, as well as connecting you to experts in the field — tapping into that resource is invaluable.” Mandy Farmer, president and CEO of Accent Inns, says, “I’m passionate about CAFE. It supported me in taking over the family business from my dad and aided me in doing it in a way where both the business and my relationship with my father flourished. How? By connecting me with peers who had similar experiences and putting me in touch with professional advice and resources specific to family businesses. I couldn’t have done it without CAFE.”

ver wondered what you get when you start an electrical business in the 80s, when interest rates are high and the economy is low? Well, if you add in a supportive family, honesty, integrity and good old fashioned work ethic, you get R.H. Electric. Randy and Luanne Hrywkiw started their business when others were quitting. Their determination and quality workmanship, based on the value of a handshake,
ensured the business grew. And strideby-stride it became the business of today that Hrywkiw shares with his three sons, Jason, Brock and Colin. “Dad taught us strong values growing up and he carries those into his business practises, so we do as well,“ says Jason. “He taught through example you make a decision and stick to it, even when times get hard.” R.H. Electric has a commitment to continued growth and development, and having the generations working together
helps to bring new ideas and new industry knowledge to their business. They are committed to continue learning so their clients get the very best in information and service. “There are always new advances in safety and in te c h n o l o g y, as well as new innovative products we

are excited to bring to the people we serve,” says Randy. Community service and involvement is another value the Hrywkiw’s passed to their sons. R.H. Electric is seen in the community supporting local hockey teams, minor football, slo-pitch and other sports and recreation opportunities. They work with local schools to educate students about the electrical trade, and have contributed significantly to the new Parkland College Trades and Technology Centre. For the last two years the familyrun business has been working with Dream builders offering at risk Aboriginal youth an opportunity for job shadowing and mentoring. The R.H. Electric team provided all the electrical work at no charge for the three Habitat for Humanity homes that have been built in Yorkton and have committed to continue this for future builds. They support the Yorkton Exhibition board with electrical services for events and are
happy to work with York Lake Golf Club, the Yorkton Wildlife Federation and many other organizations to help with events and to positively contribute to growth and development in the area. “We are proud to call this community home, and as local contractors we are committed to a high standard of workmanship and service. We live, work and have families in this community so it is important the job is done right and we treat people well. We like to support or give back to any community we do business in,” says Randy. Do you make safety your mission? R.H. Electric does. Their growth and expansion plan puts safety first, which sets them up as a professional company that cares about the safety and well-being of their employees and helps them to attract and retain quality people. R.H. Electric was recently awarded the WCB WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe

Employer of the Year Award 2015. As stated by WorkSafe Saskatchewan: “Employers who make safety a core value for their companies know there are rewards in terms of employee morale and reduced costs due to injuries, lost time and reduced productivity. WorkSafe also recognizes those employers — one each year — through the Safe Employer Award. Adjudicated by a committee, this award is presented every spring to an employer who exemplifies workplace safety.” The WorkSafe Saskatchewan Safe Employer award was founded in 2007 and is given to an employer who shows leadership in health and safety above and beyond the requirements of the industry and legislation. WorkSafe Saskatchewan states: “R.H. Electric was chosen because of its commitment to safety excellence. They believe in active participation in injury prevention by everyone, every day, in every job. At R.H. Electric, hazard identification and elimination is the first step of all tasks.”

“It’s every employee’s right to work in a safe environment and to go home safely to their families at the end of each day,” says Randy, who benefits the award to diligent practices by all staff. “I can’t stress enough how happy we are that we decided to develop a formal safety program during the initial stages of significant growth. A big thanks goes out to our staff, which under the direction of management and our safety officer, Brian Hilderman, actively participated in the development of our program and our culture.” Hilderman says the key to the program’s success was the support provided by company leaders. “The employees bought into it because management also committed to it — Randy and his sons lived it. It’s visible to our guys — that’s the magic in it. It made all the difference,” says Hilderman. Guided by Hilderman the company rolled out the program gradually, giving employees an opportunity to learn, accept and begin living it. Behaviour change was critical to the success of the program. Hilderman and the Hrywkiw team focused on rewarding positive behaviour and coaching through behaviour requiring change. “We created an environment where it’s not frowned upon to report incidents or near misses, in fact it’s encouraged. This isn’t about penalizing fellow employees, it’s about learning from mistakes together in a safe environment,” says Hilderman. They work diligently to ensure all workplace safety standards are met and in most cases exceeded. “Our focus is on planning,” says Jason. “Fewer surprises mean fewer incidents. The time we take to plan a job safely has a great side effect in that it actually increases efficiency because we have a better picture of the task before us.”

Even if you don’t have a Lennox furnace, they’re qualified to service whatever furnace you have. They are happy to provide free estimates for their work and offer financing through the SaskEnergy Network. “We believe in providing our customers with the guidance and expert advice they need to get the right piece of heating or plumbing equipment that’s within their budget,” adds Kelly. The company employs 12 trained and committed staff members, ready to help their customers whenever they need it. “We have put many Journeyman Plumbers and Sheet Metal workers through the trade,” says Brian. The Hancocks are quite proud of their employees, and some have been with them for more than 35 years. “All in all, we’re about serving our customers the best way we can. MOOSOMIN: Bigger & Better By Tonya Lambert
The southeast Saskatchewan community of Moosomin just keeps getting bigger and better. With the population steadily increasing from 2,257 in 2006, to 2,485 in 2011, then to 3,105 in 2014, the future looks bright for this thriving community.
R
ecent growth has been spurred on by the 2008 twinning of the TransCanada Highway that passes north of town, bringing many new businesses to the community. Expansion to PotashCorp’s Rocanville Mine which began in 2009 and is nearing completion, has and will continue to create many new

employment opportunities. In the past five years, several new businesses have opened in Moosomin, including a Canalta Hotel with 79 rooms, a swimming pool and waterslide, a Motel 6 with 76 rooms, Tim Horton’s, Subway and A&W. Many existing businesses have expanded. The local Co-op, with a gas station, convenience store and car wash, has
relocated to a larger new building on the highway. A Best Western Hotel with 79 rooms is currently under construction while both the Ford/New Holland and John Deere dealerships have recently announced upcoming spring expansions. There has been an increase in residential building in Moosomin, as well, to accommodate the growing population. In 2014, two new apartment buildings were moved in, and a second 24-unit condominium villa is being constructed. The amount of new homes being built is so great that the town issued $12 million worth of building permits last year alone. In 2008, a new hospital with an attached nursing home was completed.
Moosmin has a wide variety of other health care services available, including seven full-time doctors, three dentists, a chiropractor and a visiting optometrist, as well as mental health and ambulance services. The town also has a RCMP detachment and a volunteer fire department. In addition, Moosomin has an elementary school, a high school and a branch of the Southeast Regional College. Both new and existing residents find plenty to do in Moosomin. The town has a plethora of sporting opportunities for young and old alike. There are both indoor and outdoor skating rinks, a curling rink, a bowling alley and a swimming pool. Softball games can be played well into
the evenings on the town’s lighted ball diamond, while a nine-hole grass greens golf course is located just outside of town. Moosomin Regional Park, which is located only 14 km south of town, is great for camping, picnicking, boating, fishing and swimming. As well, the town constructed a Convention Centre in April 2011, which is attached to the Communiplex and can accommodate approximately 1,000 seated people for various functions. People from across the area flock to the Moosomin Community Theatre, which has the largest screen in southeast Saskatchewan. Dance classes are so popular that local dance instructor Laura Unger will be opening a permanent studio
on Main Street this year. Additionally, there are many local clubs and organizations to join as well as a seniors’ drop-in centre. There truly is something for everyone in Moosomin. Since it originated as a CPR Station in 1882, Moosomin has attracted residents from across the globe. The area’s rich agricultural land, potash mines and oil and gas activities continue to provide numerous employment opportunities. As a result of all the thriving economic activity, the town and community of Moosomin continues to serve and grow. Prosperous and friendly, Moosomin welcomes you.
