e are pleased to report that the printing of this issue marks the beginning of Fine Lifestyles magazine on the west side of Cleveland. After a happily successful debut last year on the east side of town, we’ve decided to make the publication available on both sides of the Cuyahoga.

The economic energy is building throughout the city. More businesses, more jobs, more of our kids will grow up and decide to raise their families here. Fine Lifestyles magazine encourages its readers to make the most of what our community has to offer. Patronize local businesses to support and grow the economy. Buy a mountain bike and take advantage of the phenomenal Cleveland Metroparks. Make a trip to Ohio City from whichever side of town you’re in. Drop in on the artists at the Glass Bubble Project, then eat at some of the best farm-to-table restaurants in the country. Throw a copy of Fine Lifestyles magazine and a bottle of wine in your picnic basket and visit one of the venues featured in our events calendar, like Lake View Cemetery or Blossom Music Center. Although much is made of the differences between the east and west side communities of Cleveland, we really are one amazingly lucky neighborhood. If it’s been awhile since you crossed a bridge to visit your neighbors, there’s no better time to check out what’s happening on the other side of the river. If you live in Avon Lake, consider an evening at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights. If you normally visit Chagrin Falls when you leave home in Pepper Pike, you won’t believe the restaurants and shopping you’re missing in Rocky River. In our effort to promote the economic health and well-being of the entire city, Fine Lifestyles magazine encourages frequent river crossings and lots of local shopping throughout Cleveland. Enjoy!

Investing in Your Wardrobe is

Ultimately Rewarding

hen you shop at an upscale clothing or department store, the garments you buy are selected for you. The store owner selects the styles to carry, and standard measurements determine the sizes.

“Our fabric collection encompasses every fine mill in the world,” says Maurice Christopher, tailor and owner of Christophier Custom Clothiers in Cleveland. “We make a pattern for each client, and we package you the best you can be packaged.”

When you walk into Christophier Custom Clothiers, on the other hand, your options are seemingly endless. Hundreds of fine fabrics in all sorts of colors, prints, and textures line the walls, each a potential garment expertly crafted to your exact measurements and style preferences.

When Maurice says he and his team of high-end tailors “package” you, he means it. Beyond upgrading your professional wardrobe, they coach you in proper posture, how to stand, and how to match your outfits on a daily basis. “We provide total wardrobe management,” Maurice says. “It suddenly

changes the dynamics of how you do what you do in this realm of your world.” Properly fitting apparel is about more than just getting the right size. It’s about accounting for every unique aspect and asymmetry in your body. Most people, for example, have either a high shoulder or a low shoulder, and most also have about a half-inch difference in the lengths of their arms. “If you took a sagittal view of our body — split it in half — it wouldn’t match up,” Maurice says. Knowing this, it’s clear that readymade clothing was not created with the

consumer in mind. It came along during the Industrial Revolution, when mass production allowed for faster, cheaper assemblage of standardized products. “Suddenly, the tailor wasn’t as important, because we could make these massive runs of garments that were pretty close to the fit,” Maurice says. With the availability of inexpensive off-the-rack options, a common misperception is that custom-tailored clothing is not cost-effective. It’s easy to think that, especially when looking at a suit with a $2,000 price tag. “But, if you amortize the investment over time, then it actually costs less to look better, as a high quality garment far outlasts the opposite,” Maurice explains. “If you look like a million bucks, you get treated like a million bucks. One of the most important things, whether at work or at a job interview, is to present yourself well.” Beyond the myriad options of custom-made pieces, Christophier Custom Clothiers carries a selection of designer sportswear for any occasion, with options ranging from premium denim and khakis to Bermuda shorts, as well as a variety of fine knits and cashmere. An array of classic raincoats, leather jackets, dusters, scarves and other outerwear are available for men and women. Nine lines of shoes, a variety of accessories, and Maurice’s own line of luxury socks will complete your newly polished look. The socks, which come in the perfect fit for any shoe size, are available online at thesockhouse.com. You can reach Christophier Custom Clothiers at 216.961.5555 or visit christophier.com to learn more about the clothing and services available. But the only way to truly understand the significance of custom tailoring is to stop by the shop at 9308 Clifton Boulevard in Cleveland and experience it firsthand. amily photos and memorabilia are deeply personal, but sometimes you need the help of a professional to realize and preserve their beauty. Maureen Innocenzi has her degree in art history with a background in design. With a sharp eye for aesthetics, Maureen formed Innovate Frame & Design as a personalized service for framing, displaying and conserving virtually anything, from children’s paintings to fine artwork. Maureen can arrange, frame and hang pictures and objects that you have selected, or she can help you pick them out. She can perform color corrections or restore older photos, have copies printed on archival paper, and preserve the memories. If you have a special jersey, old musical instrument, or other sentimental belongings, Maureen can package them individually or arrange them into lovely, conservation-quality displays. Maureen can help you with those family photos that you’ve been meaning to organize for years. She’ll advise you in choosing the ones that go best together, resize them, match their color tones, and arrange them into an elegant and cohesive photo wall anywhere in the house. She can arrange anything from one photo to an entire office full of artwork. “It’s such an overwhelming project that many people want to do, but they don’t even know LEFT Maureen Innocenzi

When doing installations, Maureen usually uses a two-point hanging system to keep all of your treasured pieces level and secure against any wall, whether it’s plaster, drywall, brick or stone. This is particularly important for larger pieces or heavy mirrors, which Maureen also can custom-frame and hang. If you’re looking for artistic prints or vintage movie posters for your family room or home theater, Maureen can find the perfect selection or direct you to trusted art wholesalers. If you do the ordering and framing through her, she will even cover the shipping cost. You can reach Maureen by phone at 440.567.0109 or by email at maureen@ innovateframe.com. Visit innovateframe. com for more information on the services available. where to start,” Maureen says. “For homes or offices, this is a really great start-tofinish service.” When you call Maureen, she starts by getting to know you and what you are looking for in your home or office. By familiarizing herself with your style, personality and existing décor, Maureen can determine which frame styles and arrangements would best match your settings. Innovate Frame & Design has thousands of wooden and metal frame options and hundreds of mat choices. Maureen creates wooden frames with handcrafted inlays

and finishes. She hand-wraps mats with a variety of fabrics and can hand-paint them, apply French mat lines, or gild the mat’s bevel with gold or silver leaf. “Visually, it’s unique and very pretty,” Maureen says. To preserve the framed pieces, Maureen uses acid- and lignin-free mats, as well as UV-filter glass that blocks 99 percent of ultra-violet rays. She even offers museum glass, which provides the same UV protection and also has a coating that makes the glass practically invisible. “If it’s something that you want to frame, you probably want it to last a long time,” Maureen says. “The way you frame the pieces affects how they last.”

ith today’s busy lifestyles, the adage “time is money” is more accurate than ever. Routine trips to the dry cleaners not only are inconvenient, but also squander time that otherwise could be productive. “We’ll Take It From Here” is the London Cleaners’ motto — and these full-service dry cleaners stick to it. Alex Shvartshteyn purchased London Cleaners in 1984 and transformed it into a 100 percent door-todoor dry-cleaning service that can handle any type of clothing and serves Northeast

Ohio, from Chardon to Avon Lake and into northern Akron and Medina. “We’re the only company that does exclusively door-to-door, and we’ve perfected the service,” Alex says. “It’s more efficient. There’s no minimum. There’s no extra charge, just regular drycleaning charges.” Customers can schedule regular service to have London Cleaners routinely stop by their homes or offices, or they can simply call, or email, on an as-needed basis. Nobody needs to be home, so

the service is completely hands-off and convenient. Beyond convenience, though, London Cleaners maintains a level of dry-cleaning service attainable only through decades of experience. Alex is a third-generation custom tailor, who spent years making and altering garments. Thirty years ago, he decided to channel his thorough understanding of fabrics and clothing into the processes that keep them clean. Throughout his career as a custom tailor, Alex gained vital experience working

with all sorts of fabrics, allowing him to achieve a distinct level of quality for his dry-cleaning business. To further expand his knowledge base, Alex has toured the facilities of several high-end clothiers. Through visiting the factories of Brioni and Swarovski in Italy and St. John Knits in California, as well as the fabric mills of Zegna and Barberis, Alex gained first-hand knowledge of the construction and care of these designer clothes, which is unmatched by any other Cleveland-area cleaner.

Through its Signature Service, London Cleaners gives custom and designer garments the exceptional attention to detail they require, at every stage of processing. As Ohio’s only certified couture-level dry cleaner, London Cleaners is the company that highend retailers trust with their own garments. “It’s the understanding of the garments and the understanding of the fabrics,” Alex explains. “I know how the garments are constructed and how the fabrics are made.”

America’s Best Cleaners, an independent organization that measures London Cleaners against the highest standards in the industry, has recognized London Cleaners’ service every year for the past decade. “We maintain much higher standards than most of the industry for the processing of the garments and their presentation to the clients,” Alex assures. London Cleaners uses a new, environmentally-friendly cleaning process, which not only is more efficient but also cleans the clothes better than conventional methods. From cleaning to storage, let the experts at London Cleaners take the guesswork — and the legwork — out of garment care. Check out the services offered at londoncleaners. com, and call 800.832.1222, or if calling from a non-local number 440.283.0200, to get started today. “For today’s busy lifestyles,” Alex assures, “our service will save you time and money.” London Cleaners 800.832.1222 440.283.0200 londoncleaners.com

f you were noticing a lot of blue during the month of April, there’s a good reason for that. Lighting up the world in blue was one of many ways autism professionals and volunteers are bringing awareness of autism to the community. Autism is the term for a group of brain development disorders. Maybe you know a child or adult who struggles with verbal and nonverbal communication and has difficulties with social interaction and engages in repetitive behaviors. These are common characteristics of autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism can also cause intellectual disabilities and physical health difficulties. On the other hand, some people with autism excel in areas like music, math and the visual arts. Autism awareness is a priority for Autism Speaks, an international organization with three chapters in Ohio: Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland. The more people in the community who know about autism, the more likely it is to be diagnosed early and treated with behavioral therapy interventions known to improve outcomes such as learning, communication and social skills. Cleveland’s local chapter of Autism Speaks makes awareness one of its priorities, as well. Beyond lighting up Tower City, FirstEnergy Stadium and the Great Lakes

Science Museum in blue for the month of April, they plan events throughout the year to bring awareness to Northeast Ohio. Laura Hoffman, director of field development in the Cleveland chapter describes the calendar of this year’s events, “We’re sponsoring a range of events to encourage the participation of everyone in Northeast Ohio, from free ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s, to the walk in September, to the Chef ’s Gala.” Autism Speaks’ Walk Now for Autism is the signature fundraising event for the organization. It is the largest grassroots walk for autism and takes place in the U.S., Canada and in the U.K. The walks not only generate much needed funding for research but they also raise awareness of the prevalence of autism and the importance of continued scientific research. The kickoff for Cleveland’s Walk Now for Autism will be held May 15 and the walk itself is scheduled for Sunday, September 14, both at Progressive Field. Co-chair, Shari Goldberg, is especially proud of the Inaugural Chef ’s Gala fundraiser which was held at Cuyahoga Community College’s Hospitality Management Center last August. Event host, Chef Michael Symon, invited 10 of his fellow chefs to the gala, including Rocco Whalen (Fahrenheit), Eric Williams (Momocho), Chris Hodgson (Hodges

Restaurant), Brian Doyle (Sow Food), Jonathon Sawyer (Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat), Matt Mytro (Flour), Brandt Evans (Pura Vida and Blue Canyon), Jonathan Bennett (Red and Moxie), Britt-Marie Culey (Coquette Patisserie) and John Selick (University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center). The event raised $100,000 for autism. Shari says this year’s Chef ’s Gala promises to be a really special event. “We’re especially excited to be in the Cleveland Museum of Art this year. That gorgeous renovated space was designed for events just like this.” Save August 9 on your calendar and contact Shari Goldberg for tickets, cleveland@autismspeaks.org. But hurry — last year’s event sold out. Autism Speaks has made three other areas part of its focus: raising funds for scientific research, providing information and resources for families, and advocating for legislation on both the state and national levels. To find out more information or to learn about ways you can participate as a volunteer, contact Laura Hoffman at laura. hoffman@autismspeaks.org. Together, we can make our community a safe and welcoming place for children and adults of all levels of ability.

Don’t Let Hearing Loss

Cause You to Miss Out By Dylan Tussel Photos Vincent Gorman

A

lot of people are hesitant to acknowledge their hearing loss, thinking it a sign of weakness or old age. Many others are apprehensive about visiting an audiologist for the first time, unsure of how the experience will be. But if you find yourself turning up the TV louder than you used to, or frequently asking people to repeat themselves because their voices sound muffled, having your hearing checked is vital. Hearing loss can occur in people of all ages and, if left untreated, can have a variety of harmful effects, both personal and professional. Multiple studies have established connections between hearing loss and everything from irritability, stress, and depression, to impaired memory, diminished health, and significantly lower earning power.

18

FineLifestyles

Cleveland East

A recent survey by the Better Hearing Institute indicated that individuals with untreated hearing loss take home up to $30,000 less annually than their normalhearing counterparts. It also found that the unemployment rate among those with severe hearing loss is double that of the normal-hearing population. The use of hearing aids was found to be a significant equalizer in both realms. Considering that about 60 percent of people with hearing loss in the U.S. are below the retirement age, these findings are quite significant. Dr. Carol Hawkins, board-certified audiologist and owner of Hawkins Hearing Center in Solon, is welcoming to all, whether you’re an existing patient or just stopping by for a free hearing check. Dr. Hawkins has 27 years of experience

in audiology and specializes in diagnostic audiology, digital hearing aids, and custom earpieces—if there’s a problem, she’ll find an individualized solution. Hearing aids aren’t what they used to be. They are sleeker and more discreet, and now work wirelessly with other commonly used electronics such as TVs and smartphones. Today’s hearing aids are water resistant and function in all sorts of environments, from crowded restaurants to the swimming pool. “They’re really trying to integrate hearing aids with how people live their lives,” Dr. Hawkins says. “It’s not just a hearing aid anymore; it’s a communication system.” Most hearing aids are practically invisible, and the sound quality is so natural that even the wearer may forget that the devices are comfortably tucked away inside their ear canals or behind their ears. Dr. Hawkins understands that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to hearing loss. Her diversified knowledge of audiology allows her to tailor every treatment to the needs of each patient. She both supplies and repairs hearing aids from a variety of manufacturers, and her 75-day return policy on purchases ensures that every patient is thoroughly satisfied with his or her devices. “This was my first experience with hearing aids, and Carol zeroed in very quickly on what would work best for me,” writes Bob, a patient at Hawkins Hearing Center. “I was looking for an audiologist with experience and knowledge, and she certainly fills the bill.” If you have five minutes, you can go online to hawkinshearing.com to take a brief hearing test or schedule a free hearing evaluation at Hawkins Hearing Center. The center is located at 33120 Station Street, at the southeast corner of Station Street and Melbury Avenue, in Solon. Call the center at 440.248.4790 or email Dr. Hawkins at carol@ hawkinshearing.com with any questions. You can schedule an appointment by phone or by visiting hawkinshearing.com. A Balanced Approach to HealtHy, Independent agIng By Lisa Floyd-Brown Photos by Vincent Gorman & courtesy of Home Care Assistance

S

cott Michaels’ parents were devoted to each other. His father was a minister and for decades, they dedicated their lives to caring for others. As they reached older adulthood, though, Scott’s father became ill and suffered from a debilitating tumor that left him reliant on Scott’s mother, Mary. Naturally, Mary became her husband’s caregiver and her life soon revolved around helping her husband with everyday activities.

20

FineLifestyles

“It was worrisome to see the toll that caring for my father took on my mother. Seeing the physical and emotional stress she endured over the years from being the primary caregiver made me think that there must be a better solution that would protect her health and his,” says Scott. With today’s population living longer than ever, most people will find themselves in similar situations where parents or loved ones will need additional assistance to maintain their independence and continue

living at home — just like Scott’s parents. Although Scott has lost both of his parents, he believes his decision to open Home Care Assistance will enable him to increase awareness around aging, health and wellness and quality of life in older adults. Home Care Assistance is a non-medical, in-home care company, and its mission is to change the way the world ages. Since its inception in 2002, Home Care Assistance has taken a multifaceted approach to its mission: 1) it provides

highly qualified, thoroughly screened caregivers, who continually further their education in senior care and related topics through the company’s proprietary online university; 2) it maintains a team of researchers who keep abreast of the latest studies on aging and wellness and incorporate their findings in specialized programs such as Home Care Assistance’s Cognitive Therapeutics Method and the Balanced Care Method™ and 3) it actively educates the community through their Healthy Longevity Webinar Series and through their award-winning senior wellness book series. The Balanced Care Method™ is based on studies of the extraordinarily long-lived elders in the Okinawa region of Japan. Life spans of over 100 years are not unusual in Okinawa. More important, people in their 70s, 80s and beyond enjoy incredible good

health and independence. Excellent physical health, mental awareness, and inner calm are common among the studied elders. These lifestyle choices have been synthesized into the Balanced Care Method, which Home Care Assistance trains its caregivers in to use with their clients to promote optimal health and wellbeing. Complementary to the Balanced Care Method, the Cognitive Therapeutics Method rests on contemporary research that indicates a relationship between mental stimulation and slower cognitive decline. Home Care Assistance’s caregivers take elderly clients through exercises of the mind’s five most vital areas — memory, executive functioning (i.e., skills such as reasoning, problem solving, judgment and mental flexibility), attention, language, and visualspatial perception — to help them maintain their mental capabilities as they age.

Scott’s staff of caregivers is more than a group of in-home care professionals; they are compassionate, conscientious, loyal individuals, who are guided by a desire to help older adults and their families. “Their reward is the service they’re providing,” Scott says, candidly. Home Care Assistance is located at 33790 Bainbridge Road in Solon. Visit HomeCareAssistanceCleveland.com for more information about the resources offered to clients, their families and the community. ExpErt Advice Insure the Future of Your Loved Ones

Karen Suttman owner Thrivent Financial 9930 Johnnycake Ridge, #5C, Concord 440.487.6999 karen.suttman@thrivent.com

M

ore people are living longer than ever before. This, superficially, sounds ideal. One of the many implications of our increasing longevity, however, is that many are surviving with extreme limitations causing daily activities to become difficult or impossible. When someone reaches a time at which he or she needs assistance doing routine activities, such as changing clothes or bathing, the responsibility many times falls to his or her children, spouse, or other family members to give care. Questions arise: Which family member will stop working to provide care? Will this disrupt the family structure? What is the quality of care that this relative can provide, and at what cost — financial, emotional, or otherwise?

22

FineLifestyles

Cleveland East

These are among the fleeting questions that crossed my mind the day that my grandfather asked for help changing his Depends. His request caught me off guard; luckily, though, my family and I had prepared for this very scenario when we signed him up for long-term care insurance. Because of this, I was able to call a qualified in-home care provider, who began visiting my grandfather at home every morning, afternoon and evening, to help him continue living as independently as possible. I have been a financial consultant with Thrivent Financial for six years, during which time I have worked with many families to insure the future care of their loved ones. The packages we offer range widely, covering everything from in-home care to stays in nursing homes. It may sound cliché to say that you are buying peace of mind, but that truly is what our policies provide. Extended care can be very costly, depending on the assistance needed. Nursing homes, for example, can cost an average of about $82,000 per year in Ohio according to Genworth’s 2013 cost of care survey. What surprised me most was 40 percent of people utilizing long term care services were age 18-64.2 and 70 percent of seniors 65 and older will utilize some form of care in their lifetime.

Many families, unable to pay such high rates for these services, opt to care for the family member themselves. The stress that the caregiver endures in these cases, though, is so overwhelming that, often, he or she passes away before the one receiving the assistance. Our goal is to help those in need continue to live and function in their own homes for as long as possible, while their spouses remain spouses, their children remain children, and their grandchildren remain grandchildren. One client I often think of was a woman in her early 50s, who took out a policy before becoming terminally ill. When she no longer could perform daily activities, her husband was able to bring 24-hour care into their home for five years, until she passed away. and figure of many of Yana’s students, in as little as a month. The Barre workout draws from ballet, yoga and Pilates, to provide a workout experience that produces results without wearing down your body. Barre takes the body-sculpting elements of each workout style to focus on the areas you care about most: thighs, hips, butt, abs and arms. Slow, sustained motions immediately followed by stretches allow you to strengthen these muscles without bulking them up. Barre provides a thorough cardio and strength workout, while avoiding the

type of high-impact movements and heavy lifting that typically leads to joint and back pain. Barre is, to the contrary, restorative and actually helps you to improve your posture, strengthen your core, and bolster the overall health of your back. The gentle, restorative nature of the barre workout makes it extremely sustainable for women of all fitness levels, ages 18 and up. The classmates you’ll meet at Barre Cleveland will vary widely in age and experience —Yana even has current students as old as 75.

All class scheduling is done online at barrecleveland.com, so go online to check out the studio, purchase a new client unlimited one month pass for 60 per cent off the normal price, and schedule all your classes.

This female-only boutique fitness studio will help you to sculpt your body, become slim, and feel sexy, all with the support of a strong community of women who are experiencing the same struggles in pursuit of the same goals as you. “We accommodate every fitness level in every class,” Yana assures. “It’s very inviting — all the ladies know what it feels like to be in class for the first time.”

Decompression Therapy

A Painless Alternative to Surgery By Lisa Floyd-Brown Photos Vincent Gorman

hen you suffer from spinal conditions such as disc protrusions, pinched nerves or sciatica, surgery is a double whammy: it costs tens of thousands of dollars, and it often fails to correct the ailment. Spinal decompression therapy is a nonsurgical alternative treatment that is effective, noninvasive, and painless — and it costs about onetenth the price of surgery. Nearly a decade ago, Dr. John Livingston began using spinal decompression therapy

26

FineLifestyles

Cleveland East

for his patients with spinal disc problems. The treatment was so successful that, almost 10 years later, Dr. Livingston continues to use it to treat a variety of spinal issues in the back and neck, such as disc protrusions, herniations, and bulges, as well as conditions including pinched nerves and sciatica.

Dr. Livingston is a third-generation chiropractic physician, who has been in practice for 20 years. He and his partners at Livingston Chiropractic Center take a holistic approach to health care, to identify and address the causes of pain, rather than masking the symptoms.

In fact, research places the effectiveness of this painless therapy between 86 and 93 percent; surgery, on the other hand, yields an estimated success rate of between 20 and 50 percent.

If you experience pain, numbness or weakness in a limb and suspect you have a problem with your spinal disc, this may indicate a problem that can be addressed through spinal decompression therapy.

Beyond cost and efficacy, decompression therapy provides a plethora of benefits over the surgical alternatives, which would be trimming the affected disc or cutting open the spine to remove the disc. Decompression therapy is simple, easy, and even relaxing for patients. All they have to do is lie horizontally on the tablelike decompression machine, which provides gentle, intermittent, angled traction to the area of the spine where the nerve is pinched. This force separates the vertebrae around the protruded disc, creating a vacuum-like effect that draws the disc away from the spinal nerve and back where it belongs. “It’s quick and easy,” Dr. Livingston says. “A lot of people actually fall asleep during it.” This therapy is noninvasive, painless, and gradual in nature. It incrementally moves the disc back into place over four

to eight weeks of treatment, depending on how significant the protrusion is. “Much like orthodontics moves the teeth slowly into place with time and pressure,” Dr. Livingston explains, “decompression therapy moves the discs slowly with time and pressure.” Because spinal decompression therapy is painless, it doesn’t involve cortisone injections or any other medications. Patients also experience significantly shorter recovery times than those following surgery. Dr. Livingston follows up decompression therapy with adjunctive treatments, which help to keep the disc in the right place, and nutritional counseling to promote recovery and overall health. He stresses health and wellness, and actively incorporates them in his treatments to ensure that his patients’ bodies have the

nutrients necessary to heal their injuries. “That’s almost as important as the treatment itself,” Dr. Livingston explains. ExpErt Advice Safely Alleviate Sciatic Nerve Pain

By Dr. John Livingston owner Livingston Chiropractic Center 25111 Miles Road, Suite D 440.528.0005 drjklii@hotmail.com www.jkldc.com

e address many health concerns in my office but one of the most common problems that I see daily is sciatica — an acutely painful condition that results from the inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of the leg into the calf, ankle and foot, often causing severe cramping or numbness of the toes, and spasms in the lower back and buttock. Not only is sciatica painful, but it can also be very complex and derive from a number of causes: • spinal disc herniation, in which the outer layers of the disc fray or tear and result in a protrusion of the intradiscal material with pressure on the sciatic nerve roots;

28

FineLifestyles

Cleveland East

• tight piriformis muscles of the buttock which compress the sciatic nerve at its emanation from the sciatic notch of the pelvis; • spinal stenosis, a congenital or acquired, degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal which physically compresses the sciatic nerve roots; • spinal degenerative disc disease/ osteoarthritis, (also known as degenerative arthritis of the spine) that results in bone spur formation that can rub against the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spine; • postural changes related to pregnancy, which results in laxity of the ligaments of the pelvis and sacroiliac joint that can refer pain along the sciatic nerve; • along with a number of others. The good news is that in many of these cases, I have had great success at alleviating the condition of sciatic nerve irritation with entirely conservative approaches — chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, myofascial release, and nutrition — and saved patients tens of thousands of dollars on costly and invasive injections and surgeries.

The key to the treatment is the evaluation of the condition at its earliest onset, before there are chronic or permanent manifestations of nerve root damage. Once a spinal nerve root has become compressed or irritated, it can quickly deteriorate and degenerate within a matter of only a few weeks to cause severe, unrelenting pain from the nerve root damage itself; muscle spasms; muscular atrophy and loss of muscle mass; and resultant weakness in the leg, leading to noticeable gait changes, and instability in walking. At its advanced stages, sciatic pain can be debilitating and cause the patient to require use of a cane, walker or wheelchair to get around, since the nerve becomes damaged beyond the body’s ability to repair it; it can even result in signs of loss of bowel or bladder control. For more than 20 years, I have treated the condition of sciatica safely and effectively in my office through conservative management, and have helped to restore health to thousands of patients who thought that they had no other options. Give us a call at Livingston Chiropractic Center today at 440.528.0005 to see if this treatment can help you!

Specialized Yoga Practices

very time Beth Gatchell walked up a flight of stairs, she felt as if her leg muscles ripped with every step. After work, she would collapse to the floor, crawl to the couch, and stretch for about an hour before regaining her mobility.

Many people visit Partners to Empowerment Wellness Center, feeling defeated by chronic or recurring pains. “I’ve tried everything,” they say. What they don’t realize, though, is that yoga can be adapted to relieve a variety of common maladies.

Beth, like many others, suffered silently from excruciating symptoms related to her fibromyalgia. Through a fusion of yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises, Beth now manages her symptoms better than ever before.

Partners to Empowerment, which in March celebrated its first full year of promoting holistic wellness in the Cleveland area, has developed three specialized, six-week yoga series, to mitigate the hard-to-treat symptoms of fibromyalgia, migraine headaches and back pain. Each workshop

costs only $120, which is $20 per class, for a lifetime of relief. Beth designed and leads Healing Journeys, the six-week series for any woman — regardless of yoga experience or fitness level — who struggles with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. In the class, Beth fosters and promotes selfcompassion and interpersonal empathy to create a supportive, communal atmosphere. Through gentle stretches, meditation, and a little bit of art, participants learn to more

effectively manage their fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptoms. “So many people feel isolated,” Beth says. “This is a place where people will feel supported.” Therapeutic Yoga for Migraine Headache Relief, on the other hand, focuses on giving migraine sufferers a new awareness of what’s going on in their bodies, such as their posture and breathing tendencies. Dawn Miller, who designed and facilitates the series at Partners to Empowerment, explains that many migraine sufferers either hold their breath or take only shallow breaths. By gaining an awareness of these subconscious habits, participants can make conscious behavioral corrections in their daily lives, which help to provide continuing relief from their migraines. Yoga to Heal Back Pain, Dawn’s other sixweek series at Partners to Empowerment,

focuses more on each individual yoga pose and the sensations it invokes. “Many poses are performed lying on the back,” Dawn explains, “because that puts the least amount of pressure on the spine. An example would be to lie on your back and bring each leg slowly to your chest while exhaling, extend it while inhaling, and alternate, trying to identify asymmetries in your body. If you discover, for example, that one side of your back is weaker than the other, you can strengthen the weaker side through subsequent postures to alleviate back pain that resulted from that muscular imbalance.” These new specialized yoga classes are now offered on a continual basis at Partners to Empowerment. For more information and their updated class schedule, please visit their website at partners-to-empowerment.com or find them on Facebook.

Start Some Art at the

GLASS BUBBLE PROJECT By Patti London Photos Vincent Gorman

ost understand that stress takes a toll on our physical and mental health and wellbeing. While a warm bath can be relaxing, for serious stress reduction consider glassblowing. Some quality time at the Glass Bubble Project in Ohio City will burst your pressures and tension. The creation of any kind of art can reduce stress in three significant ways. First, the distraction of creating something will take your mind off whatever is stressing you out, allowing you to return to the problem with a clearer head. Secondly, creativity can completely engage our attention to the point where we are in a state of what psychologists call “flow. This complete absorption is similar to meditation in the mentally-restorative benefits it delivers. Finally, investing time in a hobby such as drawing or, say, glassblowing, gives us a sense of having a more balanced life. Humankind has had a long-term fascination with glass. The earliest evidence of glassblowing was found in Jerusalem and dates back to the first century B.C.E. Beginning in the 13th century, Venetian glassworkers in Italy set international standards for form, color and elaborate originality. The studio glass movement began in the 1960s here in Ohio, specifically through workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art. The artists of the modern studio glass movement can be found worldwide and several iconic pieces can be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art. In that tradition, but on the other end of the spectrum from Venetian glass, the artists-in-residence at the Glass Bubble Project proudly create Clevetion glass — an industrial, recycled, found-object kind of art glass. The working studio is a testament to creativity. Mike Kaplan, co-owner of the studio, located behind the Westside Market, recommends beginning with an

hour-and-a-half class where you’ll learn the basic techniques and end up with three finished pieces. Invite a friend, and the class lasts a little longer. Invite a group of friends, and the lesson costs are reduced for everyone. Call to schedule an introductory class or stop by for a demonstration Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. At about 2000°F, the molten glass in the furnace glows bright orange. The glassblower will start a piece using the blowpipe to “gather” molten glass on the tip. While the glass is malleable, the piece is rolled on a slab of steel table to give it shape before a puff of air is introduced through the blowpipe. Large heatproof mitts can protect the hand from the heat of the blowpipe throughout the manipulation of the glass. Reheating the glass allows the glassblower to continue forming the project until it’s ready to finish by slowly cooling in the annealer. Fine Lifestyles Cleveland Publisher, Marc London, spent a couple of quality hours at the Glass Bubble Project recently. Instructor Dave Learn took him through the basic steps of creating a glass and some colorful teardrop-shaped ornaments to hang in a window. “I intend to keep practicing my technique,” Marc says. “But, next time I’ll dress with the furnace temperature in mind.” While the process seems rather straightforward, maintaining the temperature and controlling the shape of molten glass with a mind of its own

requires the kind of concentration that doesn’t allow for the worries of your day. This activity inspires the type of focus which can transport you from your life stressors into the mindfulness of being in the zone. An hour of working with glass will do more to refresh your mindset and reset your stress levels than most other investments of your time. And you’ll end up with a colorful paperweight or window ornaments to remind you to make time for creativity on a regular basis. BOOK Review

Sorry, I Have to Take This By David B. Rust and Bradley J. Kramer

B

efore I began to write this review of Sorry, I Have to Take This I checked my email. There were a couple easy messages to respond to, so I did. Then I deleted a few messages about online sales from a list-serve I belong to. That felt sort of productive. Once I opened a new word processing file, I thought about how to begin this review. Nothing came to mind immediately, so I scanned my Twitter feed and checked Instagram in case anything new needed my attention. For some reason, no ideas came to me about the writing I needed to do. So frustrating. What’s this? My phone’s buzzing with a text message from my daughter. Hahaha. I’ll just shoot her a quick text back. Maybe I’ll try to finally beat level 165 of Candy Crush, then I’ll be ready to write…

If this sounds familiar, you’ll be able to relate immediately to the travails of Rust and Kramer’s fictional protagonist, Ben. His story is set forth throughout Sorry, I Have to Take This to illustrate the struggles we face to keep

our priorities in the face of constant digital distractions. Instead of making our lives simpler and easier, they can make our lives complicated and messy. Ben’s story is rather dramatic. He has trouble at home; he has crises at work; he wrecks his car. But the most important message at the beginning of his story is that he has lost his sense of what is important and of value in his life. His lack of focus and feelings of stress contribute to the chaos. Spoiler Alert: Ben begins to take steps to regain his focus, reduce his stress and readjust his priorities. Sorry, I Have to Take This is marketed to business professionals who need to follow Ben’s approach to learn the value of “single tasking” in an electronic multi-tasking age. This book, however, has value for everyone. The demands of keeping current with social media, and the overload of information from electronic sources, has severely reduced the time we need to spend with our thoughts.

Somehow, we are not scheduling those quiet moments of reflection into our calendars. We aren’t focusing on a single task with a clear mind, so the really important matters are not receiving our attention. Without giving quality time to important tasks we are letting life’s minutiae take over; we’re failing to live up to our potential productivity and we’re letting those really creative ideas slip away. While we may know all this intuitively, Rust and Kramer’s book has specific steps we can take to get back to a place of sanity. Small habits can make distinct differences in our personal and professional lives. The authors don’t suggest that we do away with our smart phones, but maybe we don’t need to be checking them while we’re at meetings or having dinner with our families. Now that I’ve finally given my undivided attention to the task of writing this book review, I felt the words start flowing and my sense of accomplishment is restored. Candy Crush can wait.

lex Nemet never has been one to turn down a challenge. The veteran ultra-marathon runner and former doorto-door salesman is no stranger to hard work. Fifteen years ago, when Alex got a call from a friend who was selling factorydirect dining room sets, he had a greater vision: to make all sorts of premium home furnishings and leisure products available under one roof, at factory-direct prices. At the time, Alex was working two jobs to pay the bills. He cashed in his scant 401(k) to make his first investment in what soon evolved into Northeast Factory Direct. That first purchase was an 18th-centurystyle cherrywood dining room set. A friend let Alex store the set in his singlecar garage in Lakewood, and Alex placed a classified ad in the newspaper. Soon thereafter, someone responded, purchased the twelve-piece set, and asked if Alex could deliver and assemble it. With that sale, Northeast Factory Direct was born. “It started with one dining room set in a garage,” Alex recalls. “I sold it and bought two more, then sold them and bought three more.” Alex kept one set assembled in the garage, which functioned as a floor model. He placed more classified ads, and people began buying the sets as fast as Alex could stock them. “People were thrilled,” says Tom Purdy, who works with Alex at Northeast Factory Direct. “They were able to buy these dining room sets, which they wanted and needed, for thousands of dollars less

than they’d pay at the type of upscale retail stores that typically stock them.” Before long, Alex’s orders were coming by the truckload — a sign that he had outgrown his friend’s suburban garage. Alex rented a storage unit nearby, and began stocking hardwood bedroom sets as well. He continued advertising at the grassroots level through classified ads, Craigslist, and handmade signs that he and his daughter crafted. “Eventually, he added more furniture, mattresses, hot tubs, and it just became this great thing, where it was kind of like a secret,” Tom recalls. “There’s no club, no membership fees; people just had to know about it.” Now with two warehouses — one in Cleveland and another in Eastlake — Northeast Factory Direct could practically furnish a house, top to bottom, and put a hot tub outside. It stocks all types of traditional and contemporary furnishings, in a myriad of hardwoods and finishes, metal, glass and upholstery. It carries a selection of highquality furniture, mattresses, hot tubs and kitchen cabinets, all priced well below what retail stores charge. “Everyone wants to have a nice home and nice things,” Alex says. “Here’s a place where you can get something that’s really nice and costs half the normal retail price.” After 15 years of business, Northeast Factory Direct has vastly expanded and diversified its inventory, yet maintained its low prices and high standards of

product quality. And, its methodology is surprisingly simple. Northeast Factory Direct buys in bulk and maintains low overhead costs, passing on the savings to its customers. The two warehouses are completely unembellished, serving only as simple showrooms for the expansive selection of furnishings and leisure products. “I deal in volume and keep the warehouses simple, to keep our costs down,” says Alex, now a married father of four. Rather than marking up its products to get higher returns, Northeast Factory Direct sells more for less. “We’re like a discount buyers’ club,” Alex explains, “but with no membership fee.” The salesmen don’t work on commission, so they’re there to help you find what you’re looking for. The staff is always happy to assist, even if you’re there just to browse or comparison-shop. In fact, Alex encourages it. “I’m not afraid to put our prices and our quality up against any other retailer, so I always encourage my customers to shop around,” Alex says. “I do that because I know they’ll be back. Nobody can touch our prices.” When it comes to hot tubs, for instance, Northeast Factory Direct has a plethora of styles and options for any budget. Luxurious, energy-efficient Titan spas, which include a towel warmer and durable hardcover, are available at the warehouse for $3,998 and come with a lifetime warranty. And, they cost only 50 cents per day to operate. Northeast Factory Direct also offers an array of premium mattresses by trusted manufacturers. Whether you’re looking for firm or soft, gel or memory foam, pillow top or euro top, you’ll find options in all sizes at the warehouse. Anyone who recently spent a night or two at the Wyndham Cleveland at PlayhouseSquare would attest to the quality of Northeast Factory Direct’s selection — considering the warehouse just made a delivery of 400 mattresses to the luxurious downtown hotel. The warehouse can complete a bedroom with its stock of beds — including sleigh beds, poster beds, platform beds, bookcase beds and canopy beds, among

other styles — dressers, armoires, nightstands, chests and mirrors, all available in select hardwoods. Hot tubs, sofas, sectionals, carpets, tables, chairs, hardwood kitchen cabinets, granite, and bedroom suites are several of the various furnishings carried at Northeast Factory Direct. “The furniture we carry is diverse and really nice,” says Tom Purdy. “Regardless of your taste and style, you should be able to find what you want.” While Northeast Factory Direct’s warehouses are large, its selection of furnishings is larger. If you don’t find what you’re looking for at the warehouses, try browsing the Northeast Factory Direct website or in-store catalogs, which have hundreds of accessories at factorydirect prices. Any products that are in

stock are delivered in one or two days of being ordered. Northeast Factory Direct has two warehouse locations: one at 3321 West 140th Street in Cleveland, and another at 33599 Curtis Boulevard in Eastlake. A Cooperative Team Approach to

Home Construction By Dylan Tussel Photos VincenT Gorman & courTesy myers Homes

n football, having a good team means being able to carry a ball across a line more times than your competitors. In home construction, it means your house project — new construction or remodeling is finished and you love the result! “If you’re going to tear up your house and build anything, it’s so much better to do it in a cooperative way, rather than a competitive way,” explains Rob Myers, owner of Myers Homes. The Chagrin Falls-based company, which is known for building and remodeling

beautiful, upscale homes across Northeast Ohio, has assembled a team of seasoned pros so that homeowners don’t have to. By taking a design/build approach to construction and renovation, Myers Homes’ scope encompasses every aspect of projects it works on. This allows it to avoid many unnecessary and costly issues that often come up when a client hires an architect to design a project, and then bids it out to unfamiliar contractors.

Without the perspective of a team, architects’ plans often miss crucial interactions between components of projects. Bidding on these plans creates a competition to see who can execute the project - the plans for the project, really - at the lowest price - not to see who will satisfy the client. As that kind of “bid out” project proceeds, all those extra pieces of the project get tacked on as change orders. Every change order costs money — and they add up fast. Some contractors actually undercut others

ABOVE Rob Myers, owner

during the bidding process, Rob explains, because they know they can compensate for it later with necessary change orders; the bid process becomes a game. On the other hand, Rob says, “When the customer gets the price from a design/build builder like Myers Homes, that’s the cost of the job.” That’s because Myers Homes has the contractor and architect drafting the plan as a team. “We work together so that we can get the client where they want to be,” Rob adds. “They’re engaging us because we’re going to think about all those little things.” Myers Homes is involved from Day 1, so its team knows and understands the home, the project and the homeowner’s vision. “We develop an intimate knowledge of what the

project is because we are developing it with the client and the architect as part of a team,” Rob explains. “Most of the time, this saves a ton of time and a lot of money for the client. Bidding seems like it would save money, but based on feedback we get, people that did bid projects have a much worse experience at a higher overall cost than our clients.” While contractors bidding for projects have strong incentives to cut corners to achieve lower bids — that is, their jobs depend on it — design/build companies like Myers Homes are concerned with only one objective: satisfy the homeowner. You can start your next remodel or construction project by calling Myers Homes at 440.708.2424 and meeting

Install an Awning for Instant

t’s pretty well-known that exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays plays a role in the development of skin cancers. Eye damage, accelerated skin aging and wrinkling, and even a suppressed immune system, however, are among the many lesser-known risks of fun in the sun, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. To avoid these and other maladies, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends

staying in the shade outdoors and avoiding direct sunlight indoors. Retractable awnings, shades and canopies bring the shade to you, so you can continue to enjoy your outdoor (and indoor) space, while being comfortable and shielded from the sun’s direct rays. Awnings can be mounted on a roof, sidewall or soffit (underneath a roof overhang) to create cool, shaded areas next to the home. “In outdoor areas that get hit by the sun all afternoon, such as patios,

a retractable awning can decrease the temperature by 20 degrees, just by creating shade,” explains Dino Mastantuono, owner of Action Awnings, a branch of Action Door, which provides awning, canopy and shade services. Action Awnings handles everything from the initial consultation to the installation and maintenance of its awnings, each of which is custom-built in the United States by Aristocrat Awnings. “Awnings aren’t easy to install, and if you don’t do it right,

you can really tear up your house,” Dino says. “We’ve been around for 46 years and do this all spring, summer and fall, so we’re professionals and we guarantee our work.” The manufacturer’s warranty is among the strongest in the industry, providing lifetime coverage on all frame components, as well as guarantees of 12 years on fabrics and five years on motors and gears. Aristocrat Awnings’ products are maintenance-free for the user, meaning no routine greasing or oiling necessary. Retractable awnings can be operated either by a manual crank, ideal for smaller models, or by a motor. Motor-operated awnings extend and retract with the push of a button and can be equipped with wind sensors, which automatically tuck away the equipment when wind reaches potentially damaging speeds.

When the Action Awnings representatives visit your home or business for a free consultation, they bring more than 100 color and fabric swatches to find the combination that best matches your needs and décor. Action Awnings offers “good,” “better” and “best” models to provide quality awnings within a wide range of budgets. To create shade in outdoor areas farther away from the home’s structure, such as in the yard, ask about Action Awnings’ selection of canopies. For protection indoors, consider shades, which block the sunlight from entering through windows and also help to reduce cooling costs. Action Awnings is based at 201 East Granger Road in Brooklyn Heights. For more information on awnings, shades and canopies, call Action Awnings at 1.866.366.7463, email dino@action-door.com,

Finally,

Garage Flooring That Lasts By Lisa Floyd-Brown Photos Courtesy Garage Finisher

any people have tried to paint their garage floor with store-bought kits or hired a professional to install epoxy flooring only to have a peeling mess a couple years or even months later. After 20 years as an owner of a large painting company, Mario FX Salwan set out to find a better solution. He did just that, with technology invented by Bayer Material Sciences called Polyaspartic. Mario F.X. Salwan, owner

“Polyaspartic is a higher-grade version of a Polyurea coating similar to what is used as a spray-on bedliner for pick-up trucks,” explains Mario. “The difference is Polyaspartic can be rolled on and has improved properties including being harder, non-yellowing and non-peeling due to hot tires from a car, truck or plane.” Using decades of installation experience, Mario worked with a chemist to formulate this resin into the perfect garage and commercial flooring system

named the Forever Floor and installed by Garage Finisher around the Cleveland area. Mario also sells this revolutionary coating system to other professional flooring installers throughout the United States and Canada who are amazed at how great their floors now look, how easy they are to clean and how long they last. The Polyaspartic resin can be applied down to negative 30 degrees and dries in one hour. Due to this innovation, Garage Finisher can install floors year round in residential garages, car dealerships and commercial buildings. “The installation process involves hundreds of steps and a lot of equipment, but the floor of a normal two-car garage can be installed in one day and you can drive on the floor the next day,” says Mario.

Finisher storage trailer on your driveway while the work is being completed, so you don’t have to lift a finger. Then, Garage Finisher uses concrete grinding equipment connected to specialized vacuums to remove the top layer of your concrete, including any coatings, oil, dirt and contaminants. A two-part liquid Polyurea filler that dries in eight minutes is used to fill all the cracks, pitting and control joints, effectively providing a seamless floor so there is no place for dirt to hide. Garage Finisher applies five separate layers of flooring to your garage floor, each layer drying in one hour. The result is a decorative, non-porous flooring system that is easy to clean and unfazed by hot tires, salt, oil, gasoline and household chemicals.

Be a Good NeiGhBor

Maintain Your Septic System By Mike Cabrerra Photos Vincent Gorman and Courtesy Benjamin Franklin Plumbing

A

s the old proverb goes, “He who smelt it, dealt it.” If you walk down your driveway to get the mail, but end up instead getting a big whiff of something stinky, it’s time to check your septic system. “Foul odors are probably the No. 1 clue that there’s a failing septic system,” explains Michael Kobella, plumbing operations manager at Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, Northeast Ohio’s full-service plumbing and HVAC company for more than four decades.

50

FineLifestyles

Cleveland East

Septic systems are self-contained sewage plants that treat household wastewater from bathrooms, kitchen drains and laundry, and they are common in Cleveland’s more remote residential areas, such as Pepper Pike, Bentleyville, Moreland Hills and Hunting Valley. Many times, septic systems are installed and then forgotten. When neglected systems inevitably malfunction, there are several telltale indicators: water draining more slowly in plumbing fixtures, wet

areas and/or green patches of grass around the lids in the yard, and — of course — unbearably foul odors. The nature of the system makes routine maintenance imperative not only for the health and safety of your family, but also of the community and surrounding natural areas. “If those systems aren’t maintained properly, which most of them aren’t, they fail and can discharge pretty nasty raw sewage into streams, rivers and everywhere else,” Michael says. In fact,

sewage can even back up into the house, exposing the whole family to harmful bacteria, parasites and viruses. To avoid such risks, Benjamin Franklin Plumbing created its Waste Water Maintenance Club. Membership includes thorough semiannual inspections and tune-ups of your septic system, plus discounts on repairs and replacements. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing also specializes in service and installation of Jet aeration and wastewater treatment (septic) systems. Septic systems remove pollutants in wastewater before discharging it, preventing the potential contamination of the environment and groundwater. If a faulty system is releasing unfiltered waste, it can spread disease in humans and animals and be a detriment to the environment. Upon entering waterways, such as streams, rivers and lakes, the pollutants in untreated wastewater can harm the local ecosystems by killing native fish and vegetation, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). There are many types of septic systems. Most contemporary ones work with motors, such as aerators, which introduce oxygen to the water inside the tank, promoting the growth of bacteria that help to break down the solid waste. When we wash our hands with antibacterial soap or dump bleach in our laundry, those chemicals end up flowing into the septic tanks and killing the good bacteria. Maintenance, in conjunction with Bio-Ben, can help to mitigate the impact those chemicals have on the bacteria inside septic systems. Bio-Ben is Benjamin Franklin Plumbing’s proprietary, EPA-approved septic bacteria enhancer, which safely breaks down buildup in drains, before flowing into the septic tank and helping replenish the supply of vital bacteria. ine wine always tastes better 10 years down the line — if stored in the proper atmosphere, that is. Wine cellars are specialized, sophisticated rooms that elegantly display wine collections, while maintaining the ideal climate for that wine to age. Wine Cellar Technologies provides homeowners across Northeast Ohio the opportunity to create elegant wine cellars inside their own homes. Born from a local, fullservice construction company, the Chagrin Falls-based firm can handle everything from custom racking to designing and constructing luxurious wine cellars — its specialty. “Wine cellars are very fun to work with,” says Rob Myers, owner of Wine Cellar Technologies. “They always turn out beautiful.” Wine Cellar Technologies works within homeowners’ budgets to design cellars that fit their needs as well as their homes’ aesthetics. Its design experts will visit your home to help you determine the best location for a new wine cellar, and then they’ll handle the project every step of the way. “The fact that we have a general contracting company means we can build the entire room,” Rob says. “That makes it easier, because we’re one company that does it all.” While having a parent construction company allows Wine Cellar Technologies to handle every aspect of the design and building process, its specialization in wine cellars gives its technicians the knowledge and experience necessary to build robust wine cellars that look and function beautifully. Its specialized craftsmen know, for example, that the sustained humidity necessary inside wine cellars makes it imperative to use only woods that are naturally resistant to rotting. They use redwood most often, and also work with mahogany and walnut, depending on homeowner taste. They also have thorough knowledge of the many ways to arrange racking systems, as well as the benefits and limitations of each style, so they can tailor system to your wine storage needs. Then, its experienced trim carpenters can bring the cellar to life with any wooden adornment you can imagine, such as elegant trim details, built up crowns, and custom finishing. “Aesthetically, it can be one of the most beautiful rooms in your house,” Rob says. “And it gets to be really fun to go down there and pick out the bottle you want, knowing that everything’s aged for a while.” Wine Cellar Technologies also has the resources and expertise to design and install a specialized climate-control system for your cellar, which will ensure a consistently cool, humid atmosphere for your wine to age well. When designing the space, Wine Cellar Technologies uses 3D design software, which allows you to see exactly how the finished space will look. hen Abbey Greenfield decided to remodel her Shaker Heights home, she knew exactly whom she was going to call to handle the job. “Calvetta Brothers was the natural pick,” she says. “They’ve been working with us for years.” For the past 15 years, Calvetta Brothers Construction, a second-generation family company and division of Calvetta

Brothers Floor Show, has provided trustworthy home-renovation services to the Cleveland area, including flooring and remodels at Abbey and Nick’s previous condo and current home, as well as their family’s offices. The renovation of the classic, redbrick home of Abbey and her husband, Nick, began with the addition of a side entrance, including a stoop, steps, railing, door and lighting. Through that entrance is the

kitchen, which leads to a hallway, front entrance and half bath — all of which were completely transformed. This particular job presented several challenges unique to older brick homes, as it required modifying the house’s exterior in two locations —around the side door, where steps and a stoop were added, and around a window that was elevated to match the new kitchen. “Everything was made to match the home’s existing brick

A series of canister lights illuminates the antique-red kitchen’s black granite countertops, white shaker-style cabinetry and complementary Carrara marble backsplash. Solid, hand-scraped oak floorboards run lengthwise, accentuating the kitchen’s added space and unifying it with the hallway and half bath. The front entry and hallway are simple, yet elegant, with hand-scraped oak floors, a traditional wooden staircase, and a beautiful stair runner and accent rug. The side entrance to the home now boasts an entry bench custom made by the Calvetta Brothers’ meticulous carpenter. and sandstone,” explains the Calvettas’ sister Laura, who was in charge of the project’s execution. “It’s very difficult to do with older homes, but necessary in order to keep their character.”

“They really understand us and the way we live in our house, and they were very conscientious about how we would live in the finished space,” Abbey says, elated. “We were very happy with the way it turned out.”

The kitchen was expanded by the area that used to be a side room, which had a window below counter level. The Calvetta Brothers moved the window up and matched its size and sill to the kitchen’s existing window. To achieve a seamless look, they had to trace along the mortar and remove the surrounding bricks, and then fill in the space around the new window with bricks that fit with the home’s existing pattern.

The experts at Calvetta Brothers handle every project from design to execution, including any custom carpentry and masonry. As a second-generation family company, they have established longstanding credibility for their work in the Cleveland community. Their office is located at 23760 Miles Road in Bedford, with additional showrooms in Macedonia and Mentor. If you need help with your next remodel, you can call Laura with Calvetta Brothers at 216.313.9500 or visit them online at calvettabrothers.com

“The big word here is details,” Laura says. The end product was an ostensibly original set of brick-and-sandstone steps with wrought-iron railings, leading up to a white embossed entry door with sidelite.

ExpErt Advice Which Cooling Choice is Best for Me?

Heating Cooling Plumbing Electrical

E

very spring, I receive calls from my customers who are interested Heating Cooling Plumbing Electrical in replacing their tired, inefficient air conditioning systems. They tell me that they are confused with all the rhetoric regarding efficiency, sizing, and all the bells and whistles that they frankly do not understand. I tell them that Heating Cooling Plumbing Electrical selecting an air conditioner for their home is a very big decision. An air conditioner, with proper maintenance and care, can last up to 20 years or more.

58

FineLifestyles

Cleveland East

This investment is very important and the correct choice will play a key role in their home energy expenses for many years to come. On top of that, when you need it the most, during the “dog days of summer, you want to make sure that you have the best, most reliable air conditioner that you can afford, and one that is the right choice for your home and family. Today, all air conditioners are considered high efficiency for the climate and degree days that you will find in Northeast, Ohio. The D.O.E. mandated that the minimum S.E.E.R. (seasonal energy efficiency rating) of all air conditioners manufactured be a minimum of 13. This can be thought of as miles per gallon for your energy bills. A 13 SEER unit can save you at least 30 percent on your energy bill compared to units manufactured 20 years ago. We can offer air conditioners with SEER ratings of 16, 17, 18 or even 20 SEER! Remember that the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient your system will be. The one that is best for you is based on your usage, and your budget. Another important contributing factor is how long you will remain in your home and what type of air conditioner user you are. Sizing is another factor that we take for granted. Most units installed in the last

20 years are probably the correct size. However, an air conditioner that is too small for your home will not keep your home sufficiently cool. While an oversized system will cycle frequently, causing short cycles, leading to unnecessary energy expenses and an undue strain on your compressor. At Smylie One, we will determine the correct size for your home through proper sizing, and a ductwork and airflow analysis. The greatest question that I am asked is: are all air conditioners the same if they have the same energy rating? This is where the differences arise. Ask yourself if all cars that get 20 MPG are created equal? We all know they are not, but in our industry consumers often speak in terms of just energy efficiency. Major differences include the compressor, the design, the gauge of the condenser cover, the safety features built into the unit, how quiet the unit is, the paint job, the drain pan, and many other features that distinguish the units from different manufacturers. So remember, it is not just about the same size or energy rating of an air conditioner. When you purchase a system from Smylie One, you are getting quality craftsmanship, service expertise, and of course, Service with a Smylie!

Something’s

Blooming in Buffalo By Patti London Photos Marc London

There’s another Rust Belt city in the Great Lakes region with as much civic pride as Cleveland has. For an opportunity to see that pride on display, visit Buffalo on the last weekend of July for the annual Garden Walk Buffalo.

eaturing more than 380 eclectic gardens, the garden walk is a free, self-guided tour, just under three hours from Cleveland. In fact, the Garden Walk has become such an attractive destination that one in five of its 60,000-plus visitors comes from more than 50 miles away. The Garden Walk in Buffalo was first held in July 1995 and included 29 gardens. The size and scope of the walk has increased to the point that the New York Times recognized it as the largest garden walk in the country in 2013. In honor of its 20th year, Garden Walk Buffalo has published a commemorative guide to the gardens, featuring plenty of how-to articles to transplant what you view in Buffalo to Cleveland soil. The commemorative publication can be obtained during the weekend of the walk at any of the three walk headquarters for $10. Although there has never been an admission fee, the voluntary contributions in the last few years have enabled the Garden Walk to fund $30,000 worth of grants for 70 different community garden projects. The Garden Walk also showcases Buffalo’s architecture, both public and private. The walk features six distinct neighborhoods: Elmwood Village, Symphony Circle & Kleinhans, the Cottage District, the Historic West Village, Allentown and Columbus Park/Prospect Hill. Each neighborhood sustains its own character and architectural style, from Elmwood Village’s landmark churches, synagogues and chapels, to Allentown’s Italianate, Queen Anne and Second Empire residences, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

While on the walk, find locations the map and look for the yellow signs in front. Follow arrows leading you through small alleyways along the side of 19th century Victorian homes to discover magical spaces you’d never imagine if just walking by. Garden owners gladly answer questions and often offer refreshments to their visitors. There’s an energy generated by the pride in their neighborhoods which resonates well beyond Buffalo.

Two Cleveland residents visited Garden Walk Buffalo in 2010 and were so impressed that they were inspired to start GardenWalk Cleveland in 2011. Jan Kious and Bobbi Reichtell hoped that their free, self-guided tour of Cleveland’s gardens would change perceptions of Cleveland in the same way that perceptions of Buffalo’s neighborhoods have changed. This year’s GardenWalk Cleveland is the weekend of July 12th and 13th. Visit gardenwalkcleveland.org for maps and more.

The Garden Walk Buffalo Guide/Map can be picked up at any of three headquarters during the weekend of the walk, but can also be found online at gardenwalkbuffalo.com. The featured gardens are readily located by the yellow signs planted in front of the participating homes. This year, the Garden Walk runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 26th and July 27th. Build a deck and

ooden decks are stylish extensions of homes that can transform the way you use your outdoor space. Whether it’s a family barbecue, a reunion of friends, or just a relaxing Sunday afternoon, a custom hardwood deck is the finest place to enjoy it. Its name says “Fence,” but Truline Fence has built elegant, robust decks across northern Ohio for decades. Owner Dave

Schwalm was born and raised in Shaker Heights, and began working in the trade in 1977. He started Truline Fence in ’89, as a reliable purveyor and servicer of fences and decks, both residential and commercial. Twenty-five years later, Dave continues to personally handle every facet of the business, from the initial consultations to the fence and deck installations and maintenance. “I vowed to stay small,

give personal service, and make sure I’m on every job site so everything is done perfectly,” Dave says. Dave can work atop any terrain and build anything from a set of back steps to an entire deck with a handicap ramp. He doesn’t do landscaping work; rather, he has a specialized focus on decks, fences, and each of their components, such as railings and steps, to ensure the highest possible quality on those specific jobs.

FineLifestyles

Dave supplies, installs, and repairs fences of diverse materials, styles and sizes. Chain-link, split rail, ornamental iron, and ornamental vinyl are among the materials he works with. He can do anything from a small, wooden privacy fence to a grand, power or non-power estate gate. “We do everything, from one picket to installing miles of fence,” Dave says. Dave works on residential and commercial lots, such as farms, factories and scrap yards. He can install custom-built cantilever roller gates and aluminum slidetrack gates, equipped with electronic gate operators. Dave can repair, rebuild, expand and reduce decks. When he shows up for the free consultation, he’ll look at where you’re having problems and talk you through the best solutions. With nearly four decades

64

To work within a variety of budgets, Dave builds decks of all sorts of timber, from composite materials to cedar and highend hardwoods. Tigerwood, for instance, is a popular lumber for creating elegant decks that will last. This super-durable hardwood has an attractive, exotic grain and will thrive in Northeast Ohio’s brutal weather. For a more toned-down, natural aesthetic, teak is a versatile option that also fares extremely well against the elements. Dave uses custom hidden fasteners to hold the deck together without relying on unsightly screws and nails, thus ensuring that the finished deck will look as refined as the hardwood used in its construction. “We hide all the nails on the deck, and we do custom hidden fasteners for deck surfaces,” Dave says. “There are never any nail holes or screws sticking out.” If you’re replacing or updating your deck, fence or railings, don’t worry about the old wood and metal. Dave collects all the scraps and recycles them. “We never put anything into a landfill,” Dave says. “It all gets recycled.” If you’re in the market for a new fence or deck, or if yours needs a tune-up, call Dave and he’ll give you a free consultation, including a fair and honest estimate right then and there. “We meet. I measure. I give you a price,” Dave says. “Everything is a set rate — I don’t determine my prices based on where you live or what kind of car you drive.”

of experience working with all sorts of fencing and deck materials, Dave knows what will work and what would lead to future headaches. If you like your deck, but it’s a little worn down from the years, Dave can give it a thorough update to keep it structurally sound, functional and beautiful. He will repair any existing damage from rotting, replace deck surfaces with new hardwood to prevent future rotting, and finish off the job with new railings to keep the entire structure robust for years to come.

Dave also can install new railings on your balconies and add handicap ramps to decks, entrances, or elsewhere. Truline Fence provides three-to-fiveyear workmanship guarantees on all new installations. But you probably won’t need it, because Dave is onsite daily to ensure the job is done right the first time. Truline Fence covers all of northern Ohio. Give Dave a call at 440.479.8342, and he’ll come out with samples and photos of previous work. No job is too big or too small for Truline Fence. echnology is designed to simplify our lives, but trying to keep up with the latest developments, and what’s really important, can be daunting. And, once new technology is here, it’s replaced with something better the next day! The hometown electricians at Clover Electric stay up-to-date on all the newest home electrical innovations, so you don’t have to. This family-owned, electrical service and installation company isn’t out to sell today’s latest trends. They want you

to enjoy your home by utilizing the latest technology to make life safer, better and more fun — for the long run. Clover Electric has been part of the Northeast Ohio community for more than 30 years. It provides electrical installations and repairs for both residential and commercial customers. They are so confident in their work that they offer a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee. Customers can rest assured any electrical project in their home will be handled with care and expertise.

“Safety is our first priority, when it comes to the electrical system in your home.” says Joe Talty, who co-owns the Chagrin Falls-based company with his wife, Jill. “Electrical innovations for your home not only make your home safe — there are some very cool things that can make your life better and more fun!” Here are just a few exciting electrical innovations for your home that can improve your daily routine and save you energy dollars.

There are light switches that include a remote control. This means you can control the lighting fixtures in your room without getting up. Clover has installed this special lighting control switch in living rooms, bedrooms, for the physically challenged and where mobility is an issue. A timer installed with your bathroom exhaust fan will turn it off automatically after running for a predetermined period of time. Did you know the average bath fan moves 100 cubic feet of air per minute out of your home? The simple addition of the timer to your exhaust fan will be a huge energy saver minimizing the use of your furnace or air conditioning system. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms just got more sophisticated! Before sounding a loud alarm, the unit lights up and speaks with a human voice. It tells you which room the smoke is in or when

carbon monoxide levels are rising. This technology is particularly valuable for visually impaired homeowners. You can charge your cell phone, laptop, tablet, e-reader or any electronic device just by plugging it into the wall. Now available are outlets that feature USB ports allowing you to plug in devices and not use up valuable receptacle space. Cool! There are fun and innovative electrical options for your home, but it takes a company with the skills and expertise like Clover Electric to bring them to you. Visit cloverelectric.com to learn more about the company and the services it offers. To schedule the installation of one of the items mentioned in this article, just call 440.543.1153. Consider Replacement Doors & Windows

for Energy Efficiency By Dylan Tussel Photos courtesy Fine Lifestyles Magazine

E

verybody has had at least one window in the house that sticks. It’s a very annoying reminder that it’s time to install replacements. By this point, though, the windows probably have been functioning inefficiently for a while, failing to insulate the house and resulting in higher energy bills. In fact, old windows often are the No. 1 source of squandered energy in the home, says Ray Sabin, owner of Northcoast Energy Masters. Since 1983, Northcoast Energy Masters has provided reliable and professional insulation services across Northeast Ohio. Its experienced technicians

70

can perform a comprehensive home energy audit to determine if a home is losing energy and, if so, where. Drafty windows and doors are among several common causes of wasted energy in homes. Northcoast Energy Masters’ technicians check for all possible sources of energy loss, and then provide costeffective options tailored to the specific needs of each house. Ray, 33, grew up in the home remodeling industry and has worked with windows and doors his entire life, so he and his team of technicians will know exactly which pieces will look and function best in any home.

Every door and window that Northcoast Energy Masters installs comes with a lifetime transferrable warranty and is Energy Star-rated, which means it meets energyefficiency standards established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is good news for the environment and our pocketbooks, as energy-efficient windows and doors can significantly reduce a home’s heating and cooling costs. Northcoast Energy Masters offers a variety of professional-grade entry, storm, and patio doors, in standard and custom sizes. Wooden doors clearly have aesthetic appeal, but Cleveland’s capricious and sometimes

Ray Sabin, owner, and Alex Nevulis.

extreme weather can make them difficult to maintain. That’s why many homeowners in the area call Northcoast Energy Masters to install high-end fiberglass doors, which emulate the appearance of hardwood, but are much more functional and durable. “Honestly, you can’t even tell it’s not wood,” Ray says. Northcoast Energy Masters also boasts a wide selection of vinyl, fiberglass, and wooden window styles from Soft-Lite Windows. Every window is custom-made to fit existing openings of any size and shape. “Not all replacement windows perform the same,” Ray explains. “Just the structure of the window itself matters a lot.” Vinyl windows, for instance, come in a range of styles, are maintenance-free, and perform the best in terms of preventing drafts and reducing energy costs. Ray describes fiberglass windows, on the other hand, as “a step above everything else.” The newest options on the market, fiberglass windows are durable, maintenancefree, and very energy-efficient. Fiberglass windows are able to withstand severe and prolonged stress without weakening, warping, rotting, shrinking or swelling. Wooden windows are ideal for those who prefer a more natural look or want to preserve the original style of an older home. For these homeowners, Northcoast Energy Masters offers windows made from a variety of hardwoods, including poplar, oak, maple, ash and cherry. istributed audio systems play music where you want it, when you want it. “We call that ‘distributed audio’ because we’re taking one audio source and distributing it to different locations throughout the house,” explains John Hannibal, sales specialist at K+ Integration Systems, the Chagrin Falls-based company that makes home technology simple and easy to use. The principal owner of K+ comes from a construction background, and formed K+ as a reliable, serviceoriented firm that provides the latest and highest-quality home technology. Whether you prefer to listen to music while cooking in the kitchen, entertaining guests on the back porch, or relaxing in the hot tub after a long day at work, distributed audio will play music wherever you are, in or around the house. K+ installs state-ofthe-art wireless audio systems by Sonos, which work with any audio source, such as your TV, home theater, iPod, CDs or favorite Internet radio stations. Sometimes, for instance, you have to bring work home on the night of a big game or other live event. Rather than missing the program, you can play its audio in the study while you work. If, on the other hand, you want to lose yourself in the movies you watch on the big screen in the

family room, K+ can make that happen by installing the latest surround-sound system. If you’re thinking more along the lines of a dedicated home theater, K+ can upgrade your existing theater or design and build a new one — start to finish. The Sonos audio systems connect to your home’s wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) to stream Internet radio stations, giving you access to your favorite music on programs such as Pandora and Spotify, from anywhere in or around your home. K+ can help you set up your in-home network, create your Internet radio stations, and connect your audio system to your network — all you have to do is press play. “With K+, the process is very simple and goal-oriented,” John assures. “Tell us what you want your system to do and what you want to spend, and we’ll give you the best system for your budget.” While audio/video enhancements are among the most popular K+ services, the firm can install or upgrade any technology in the home, such as security systems, climate control and lighting. K+ can make all of your home’s electronics work together and allow you to control all of them from your smartphone or in-home controllers. K+ also offers fast, streamlined customer service: “If you’re about to have a party and

t’s jet fuel! It’s acid rain! It’s an algae bloom, eating away at your roof! “A lot of people don’t know what it is that’s discoloring their roofs,” says Michael Palubiak, owner of Northeast Ohio’s full-service power washing and restoration company, Perfect Power Wash. “We have people who think it’s jet fuel or acid rain.” It’s neither.

74

FineLifestyles

Limestone-eating algae has worked its way up to Ohio, mainly from southern states, and is attaching itself to roofs, causing them to deteriorate rapidly, Michael says. From the curb, these organisms appear to be dark, dirty streaks, running down the roof. And they’re not alone. “There are lichens, moss, and all sorts of different organisms that can damage roofs,”

Michael explains. “It’s been a real issue for Ohio homeowners, in the past five years especially.” These organisms thrive, particularly on the north side of roofs, where the sun is less intense and moisture is prevalent. “They attach themselves to the roof and eat the limestone that’s built into the shingles to give them weight,” Michael says.

Gloeocapsa magma, the most common species of roof algae, produces a dark pigment to protect itself from the sun, according to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. This dark discoloration absorbs sunlight, heating the roof and, transitively, the house. This has two main consequences: in the short run, the house’s cooling bills will increase; in the long run, if the algae is left unaddressed, it will cause irreversible damage, necessitating the installation of a new roof. “It looks unsightly and hurts the curb appeal of a home, but also deteriorates the structural ability of a roof,” Michael explains. “Not ridding this from your roof is like skipping an oil change in your car and having to replace your engine.” In fact, Michael says, keeping a roof clean and free of destructive organisms

can as much as double its life. While pressure washing roofs can damage the shingles, soft-washing methods have been developed to rid rooftops of harmful organisms. “Perfect Power Wash uses a cleanser that’s specially formulated for the cleaning and neutralizing of any living organism that develops on roofs,” says Michael, owner of the company, which specializes in cleaning and restoring roofs, siding, concrete and decks. “This is a very gentle, soft-wash method so as not to disturb the shingle,” Michael explains. “It is the safest and most effective way to remove the organisms that thrive on shingles.” The seasoned technicians at Perfect Power Wash always show up uniformed, with top-notch equipment for home exterior cleaning and restoration. “All of our technicians are trained and follow

the Power Washers of North America specifications for cleaning correctly and safely,” Michael assures. iconic brick and stone architecture found around Cleveland’s historical neighborhoods, such as Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights and University Heights. “Back in the day, they built these houses with their hands,” Anthony says. “These houses have class, and it’s a privilege to work on them.” Many families love old architecture, but use their houses differently today than families did a century ago, when most of the local homes were constructed. People like having the freedom to enlarge certain rooms and add others, but they don’t want this to change the style of their home’s exterior. They need to trust that their contractor will match the house’s brick pattern, stonework, windowsills, and other exterior features. “It’s a challenge,” Anthony says. “But it’s a fun challenge.” As a Cleveland Heights resident and active community member, Anthony has a vested interest in ensuring that area homes maintain their unique and classic style. When approaching a job, such as an addition, Anthony always asks himself, “How can I make this look like it’s always been here?” “You really have to crawl into their minds to match what they built,” Anthony says. “We use brick, stone, steel beams — we make sure it’s going to look the way it needs to look.” From fireplaces and chimneys to garages and driveways, Di Francesco & Sons can handle any job that has to do with brick and stonework. In particular, Anthony sees a lot of potential in basement space that often goes unused or serves only as storage. Di Francesco & Sons recently remodeled a basement in Shaker Heights, adding easily another 500 square feet of livable space in the form of a recreation room with a bar and a bathroom. “There are a lot of basements I’ve been in, in Shaker and Cleveland Heights, that are empty but could really be one killer playroom or private room if they were reconfigured,” Anthony says. “I love remodeled basements, because you can just do so much with them and it keeps the wear and tear down in the main rooms.” Di Francesco & Sons is based in Richmond Heights. ExpErt ADvice Prepare Your Lawn to Thrive

Rick Huffman, cSP

Director of Landscape Management

The Pattie Group Inc. 15533 Chillicothe Road, Novelty 440.338.1288 pattiegroup.com

T

he snow is finally melting. The blades of grass in our lawns are poking through the perennial white blanket, and it’s beginning to feel like springtime. Cultivating a robust lawn not only enriches your family’s living space but also bolsters the local ecosystem and keeps the neighborhood looking refined. Now is the time to take a look at your yard, give it a thorough once-over, and make sure it’s ready to thrive in the summer heat. Your yard is a living, breathing entity that is constantly evolving. A lot probably happened while it was buried beneath the snow all winter long, so reviewing it is vital. You can start by giving your lawn a nice, moderate raking to uncover anything hidden under surface debris.

82

FineLifestyles

Cleveland

Check for damage from animals, to see if pest control is in order. Moles can be particularly damaging to lawns. They often leave unsightly tunnels and mounds, tearing up your yard’s root systems in the process, and opening the way for other small critters to invade. Deer and geese are among other wildlife that, while enchanting during brief visits, can be detrimental to your yard. We at The Pattie Group can help you with deer and geese repellant applications if they become a nuisance on your property. We highly recommend aeration as part of your lawn’s annual maintenance regimen. Aeration involves loosening the soil, which naturally becomes compacted over the course of the year. This process ventilates the lawn and opens the way for water and fertilizer to reach the roots. Have your yard evaluated to determine whether it’s necessary to apply lime and, if so, how much. Lime neutralizes the yard, relieving it of the acidity that’s common in shaded areas around Northeast Ohio. “Fertilizer lockup,” which can occur in acidic parts of lawns, is when nutrients and fertilizer remain trapped in the soil and cannot be absorbed into the lawn. Lime application helps to prevent this. Fertilize only after aerating and applying lime, if necessary, so that it can reach your lawn’s roots uninhibited by compact and/or acidic soil. About this time, you also want to make sure your watering

system is ready, whether it’s a network of sprinklers or a single hose. Dethatching is important to remove layers of dead grass (thatch) that build up in the lawn over the years. Then, if your lawn has dead patches, overseeding will help to turn them lush. All of these preparations are necessary to reduce stress in your lawn and cultivate a more robust grass plant that’s strong enough to handle the summer sun. The Pattie Group lawn care experts can create a proper lawn healthcare program unique to your site including weed control, aeration and liming, and proper fertilization. We also have organic programs available. Your springtime preparations will affect the development of your lawn for the rest of the year. We at The Pattie Group have decades of diverse landscape experience and employ the area’s finest certified individuals. for the home By Courtney Tait

T

he most interesting objects in a home are the ones that tell a story. The 60-year-old stool your grandfather carved from a fallen pine tree. The antique candle holders your sister gave you for your wedding. The framed drawing of a rainbow, colored by your son when he was three. Featuring items that represent another time or place instantly infuses your home with soul. What if you took that notion a step further? Reclaimed materials — from stained-glass church windows to tables made of barn wood — are becoming increasingly popular in building, renovating and redecorating, enabling homeowners to add interest to their décor while giving new life to pieces from the past. If you’re installing or replacing hardwood floors, consider using salvaged wood for a unique look that’s also eco-friendly. Boards from old barns, factories and warehouses can be found through local and online sources, saving the wood from ending up in a landfill and making your flooring an instant conversation piece. Reclaimed wood can also be used for interior walls and siding. Like mixing antiques into your space? A cast-iron tub, pedestal bathroom sink or farmhouse-style kitchen sink can complement a modern décor, making a statement that also proves functional. Decorative windows that have been rescued from old buildings become a piece of art once hung on the wall. Even vintage fireplace mantles can be repurposed and used as a headboard or shelf. The ways in which to use reclaimed materials are limitless. All it takes is a little imagination and a passion for finding treasures with a story you want to tell.

ExpErt Advice Regaining Control over Electronic Distractions

DaviD B. Rust President Coaching Solutions and author of Sorry, I Have to Take This Chagrin Falls 440.591.5111 david@coachingsolutions.com coachingsolutions.com

M

odern technology can help increase productivity, but it can also serve as a distraction from more important tasks and provide a temptation to put them off. Professionals need to use digital devices in a limited, purposeful and disciplined way. Many businesspeople struggle daily to maintain their focus in the face of modern technology. It’s easy to be distracted by electronic work (email, texting, checking Facebook) instead of doing strategic items such as writing a brief, creating a presentation, setting up a meeting to terminate an employee, or dealing with a complex billing situation. In essence, many businesspeople don’t make the harder tasks a priority.

This common preference is compounded by portable electronic devices because texting, instant messaging, social media, Internet news, and other electronic distractions are readily available on tablets and smart phones. Frequently, people let curiosity distract them from their real priorities. Basex, which describes itself as “the world’s foremost authority on the issues companies face as they enter the knowledge economy,” estimates that companies lose $650 billion each year due to the “cost of unnecessary interruptions” in terms of lost productivity and innovation. Throughout my coaching work, I’ve met many professionals with chaotic lives who find little time for serious thinking. They seem to be constantly bombarded by email, instant messaging, text messages, Twitter, pings and other electronic distractions. They feel that electronic devices are controlling them, and not vice versa. Because they’re reacting too much to the distractions in their life, they feel stressed out and have cluttered minds. One of the symptoms of somebody in this situation is an absence of focus. They juggle between their personal and professional lives and seem to be unsuccessful in each camp. To begin to address this problem, I encourage my clients to follow several rules: RulE 1: Actually attend all meetings. This means more than just being physically present; it also means being mentally present — focusing exclusively on the

issues at hand and bringing to bear all of your faculties on those issues. You should not be typing, sending emails, texting, checking messages or in any way using a cell phone during a meeting. Focusing in this way will ensure shorter, better and more productive meetings. RulE 2: Don’t take or make any calls while driving to work or for the first hour at the office — no appointments either. Set the time aside to accomplish strategic activities. Ideas will come if you don’t drive them away with “noise.” They are like fish: they take time, patience and quiet to catch. RulE 3: Always have a specific purpose and a time period in mind when using the Internet, especially social networking sites. Write it down and stick to it. If you can, even set an alarm to remind you. RulE 4: Don’t check your cell phone or take calls while speaking to someone. Not only is it rude, but it also keeps you from focusing on what they are saying and limits your response. It shows you are not really mentally or emotionally there for the person, and indicates you would rather be somewhere else. These practices won’t come easily. They will require time and mindfulness before becoming part of your routine. I promise the effort will be worth it — measured in increased productivity, healthier relationships and noticeably less chaos.

Multi-Generational Insurance agents Give You the Protection You Need By Mike cabrerra Photos Vincent gorman

O

nly 30 percent of familyowned businesses are active into the second generation, according to the Harvard Business Review. Of those, just one-third remain active and privately held for the third generation to lead. Three generations of State Farm agents in Shaker Heights have successfully challenged those national statistics. “As we tell everybody, it’s in our

86

Cleveland

blood at this point,” Robin Gorman says. “It’s become a passion of ours.” Not only has Robin followed in her father’s footsteps, but she also operates out of the same office location as he did (although it’s since been remodeled). It all started with Glenn Robinson, one of the first African American State Farm agents in the Northeast. Glenn led a

very successful 30-year career with the agency, establishing a name for himself in Cleveland, and especially in the Shaker Heights community. “State Farm has been in business for more than 100 years, and they’re always considered to be the cream of the crop among insurance agencies,” Robin says. “So we feel like we’re working for the best.”

State Farm is the number 1 auto and home insurance agency in the industry. With more than 100 products to offer, agents are able to design the most comprehensive protection possible for their clients. “We’re able to help customers manage everyday risk and realize their dreams through retirement planning and other services we offer,” says Loren Walker, the third generation in her family’s business. Loren recalls spending days as a young girl in the office with her mom and grandpa. Her entrepreneurial spirit awoke as she watched her mom and grandpa build their businesses from scratch. “My grandpa laid the foundation for my mom,” Loren says. “I saw her work hard, a lot of late nights. There were times when she had to stay in the office until the morning.” As Loren got older, she spent time working at Robin’s office. It wasn’t long before Loren began bringing in clients. After graduating from college, Loren moved to Nashville to pursue a master’s degree, during which time she continued to gain experience through working at another agent’s office. A natural fit in the industry, Loren created her own agency in 2008 in Tennessee. About four years later, State Farm offered her a job as territory sales leader in Nashville, a position that puts her in charge of agents in the area. “Hard work and determination were things that my parents really stressed to me,” Loren says. As she progressed through her career, she and her mom

became a team. “We learned from each other,” Loren says. “I knew I could always call her for ideas and support.” The teamwork between Robin and Loren translated to even better service for their clients, which is their top priority. “We look forward to helping people achieve their everyday goals, and that’s a vital service that we offer,” Robin says. “We make sure that others are fully insured in all areas of life, fire, home, health, business, commercial, and now, annuities and securities.” “We have that insurance discussion with everyone from a transient resident who

just moved to the area — maybe they’re a resident at the Cleveland Clinic or a college student — on up to elderly retired individuals,” Robin says. “And we match coverage to their needs.” Robin’s office is located at 16812 Chagrin Boulevard, across the street from Shaker Towne Center, in Shaker Heights. You can reach her at 216.283.0080. Robin Gorman, State Farm Agent Loren Walker, Sales Leader 16812 Chagrin Boulevard Shaker Heights 216.283.0080

MOUNTAIN

f you’re trying to brush up on your mountain biking skills, you could try biking to work using some of the city’s designated bike lanes. The extremes of the winter season created the kinds of craters designed especially for extreme commuting. Or, you could practice your skills in safer conditions on trails in the Cleveland Metroparks. “Mountain biking is just exploding locally,” according to Travis Peebles at Blazing Saddle Cycle on Detroit Ave. “It’s a great way to experience the beauty of our parks and the thrill of active outdoor recreation.” Several new initiatives have opened up those possibilities for local biking enthusiasts, as well as other trail users such as hikers, runners and equestrians. Under the guidance of the Cleveland Metroparks Executive Director, Brian Zimmerman and mountain bike enthusiast, Metroparks Commissioner, Dan Moore, the parks system has taken its mission of conservation, education and recreation to a whole new level. Realizing that the two-mile mountain biking trail located in the Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation was insufficient to satisfy the needs of local biking groups, the Metroparks agency conducted a study of its existing trails and determined that a low-impact, sustainable single-track trail could conserve the natural environment and provide a healthy, active option to bring the community into the parks. Building the nine-mile Royalview Trail in the Mill Stream Run Reservation was a team effort. The Metroparks forged

a partnership with CAMBA (the Cleveland chapter of the International Mountain Biking Association, or IMBA). CAMBA provided 1,870 volunteer hours over nine months to assist the Metroparks staff with design, building, flagging and finish work on the Royalview Trail. An exhaustive inventory and analysis of the plant and animal life, and soil, was conducted prior to building the trail. The mountain biking community is all about natural conservation, working diligently to maintain the pristine beauty of the trail and continuing to monitor its environmental impact. Adding to the awareness, funding and volunteer support, local craft brewer, Matt Cole of Fat Head’s Tap House & Brewery, created the Trail Head Pale Ale. $10,000 of proceeds from its sale last summer were donated to the Trails Fund of the Metroparks to assist with the purchase of building equipment, training and materials. Cole was awarded the first annual “Trails Champion” corporate sponsor award from the Metroparks. The Trail Head Pale Ale even won a silver medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. Another initiative was recently made possible when the City of Cleveland was awarded a $10,000 grant from the aforementioned IMBA for the development of a mountain bike skills park in Kerruish Park, located in the Lee-Harvard neighborhood. The skills park will provide riding opportunities for yet more mountain bikers. The Cleveland Metroparks will offer assistance in the design and maintenance of Kerruish’s new trail. Nancy Desmond, Cleveland Metroparks’ Director of Special Projects, says we can expect a third trail to open June 7 — weather permitting — in the Bedford Reservation. She anticipates that yet another multi-use trail will be opening at the north end of the Rocky River Reservation. Visitors have been riding the trail along the river for the last 50 years, so it made sense to build a sustainable, environmentally low-impact trail at that location. An assessment of that area is currently being conducted. Originally, there were only two miles of mountain biking trails while there existed 200 miles of paved trails and 90 miles of horseback riding trails in the Metroparks. Thanks to the guidance and vision of Brian Zimmerman and the dedication of riding groups like CAMBA, the miles of available riding trails is catching up to the huge demand. The interest in this sport will only continue to expand once trails are opened in Summit County and in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, as planned in the near future. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge, David Matia, is an avid mountain biker and has been an active supporter of the growth of the sport locally. He appreciates the fact that Royalview Trail has proven to be such a success. “The trail satisfies all ability levels,” Judge Matia notes. “I’d really like to see Cleveland develop a reputation as a mountain biking destination.” James Rychak, co-owner of Blazing Saddle Cycle, has noticed a definite increase in sales of mountain bikes. Blazing Saddle Cycle and Spin bike shop in Lakewood also sponsor mountain bike racing teams. Time trials will be conducted on three Tuesdays in June at the Royalview Trail in Strongsville, for interested riders. The cost to register and further information is available on the Cleveland Metroparks website clevelandmetroparks.com. You can also find maps on the website for all of the trails mentioned here. The Cleveland Metroparks are an enormous asset to our community. Time spent enjoying the natural habitats either on foot or on two wheels will make us all healthy conservationists. Davidson dealership carries every model of motorcycle, from Sportsters to full out touring bikes including a trike version. New this year is the Harley-Davidson Street. “It’s a high performance, lightweight street bike that has a new motor, new frame, new everything,” Dave says. You can spend a good part of a day enjoying the Harley dealership. Check out the old-style Texaco gas station that resides in the parts department. While touring the dealership you will see many vintage Harleys including Elvis Presley’s 1975 Harley-Davidson. Across from the Texaco station is the Harley Diner, a unique and historical aspect of South East Harley-Davidson. This diner car is impeccably preserved from the 1940s. South East HarleyDavidson purchased the Worcester Dining Car in 1989 and maintained its midcentury charm. “It was brought to Ohio on a semi-truck,” Dave says. “A portion of a dealership side wall was knocked down to allow the diner to be positioned inside our motorcycle building.” The newly built South East Gears and Cheers is a family-oriented restaurant and bar, serving everything from affordable sandwiches to steak and shrimp, as well as a variety of vegan dishes. The restaurant features motorcycles from all over the world, such as Spain, East Germany, Japan and Russia, hanging from the ceilings and other areas overlooking the dining areas. Motorcycle races and other sporting events play on the restaurant’s big screen TV. Live bands perform in the main dining area. Head to the second dining area and you will find five see-through garage doors that lead to the beautifully landscaped back patio. Barbecues, tailgate parties, bike and car cruise-ins are plentiful all year long. Head over to the expansive MotorClothes department and you’ll find a variety of Harley-Davidson apparel for men, women and the little ones. It carries everything from boots, jackets and helmets, to furniture and hammocks. If you were around in the 70s, you probably remember that Harley-Davidson also produced golf cars at the time. That
