f you were noticing a lot of blue during the month of April, there’s a good reason for that. Lighting up the world in blue was one of many ways autism professionals and volunteers are bringing awareness of autism to the community. Autism is the term for a group of brain development disorders. Maybe you know a child or adult who struggles with verbal and nonverbal communication and has difficulties with social interaction and engages in repetitive behaviors. These are common characteristics of autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Autism can also cause intellectual disabilities and physical health difficulties. On the other hand, some people with autism excel in areas like music, math and the visual arts. Autism awareness is a priority for Autism Speaks, an international organization with three chapters in Ohio: Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland. The more people in the community who know about autism, the more likely it is to be diagnosed early and treated with behavioral therapy interventions known to improve outcomes such as learning, communication and social skills. Cleveland’s local chapter of Autism Speaks makes awareness one of its priorities, as well. Beyond lighting up Tower City, FirstEnergy Stadium and the Great Lakes

Science Museum in blue for the month of April, they plan events throughout the year to bring awareness to Northeast Ohio. Laura Hoffman, director of field development in the Cleveland chapter describes the calendar of this year’s events, “We’re sponsoring a range of events to encourage the participation of everyone in Northeast Ohio, from free ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s, to the walk in September, to the Chef ’s Gala.” Autism Speaks’ Walk Now for Autism is the signature fundraising event for the organization. It is the largest grassroots walk for autism and takes place in the U.S., Canada and in the U.K. The walks not only generate much needed funding for research but they also raise awareness of the prevalence of autism and the importance of continued scientific research. The kickoff for Cleveland’s Walk Now for Autism will be held May 15 and the walk itself is scheduled for Sunday, September 14, both at Progressive Field. Co-chair, Shari Goldberg, is especially proud of the Inaugural Chef ’s Gala fundraiser which was held at Cuyahoga Community College’s Hospitality Management Center last August. Event host, Chef Michael Symon, invited 10 of his fellow chefs to the gala, including Rocco Whalen (Fahrenheit), Eric Williams (Momocho), Chris Hodgson (Hodges

Restaurant), Brian Doyle (Sow Food), Jonathon Sawyer (Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat), Matt Mytro (Flour), Brandt Evans (Pura Vida and Blue Canyon), Jonathan Bennett (Red and Moxie), Britt-Marie Culey (Coquette Patisserie) and John Selick (University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center). The event raised $100,000 for autism. Shari says this year’s Chef ’s Gala promises to be a really special event. “We’re especially excited to be in the Cleveland Museum of Art this year. lot of people are hesitant to acknowledge their hearing loss, thinking it a sign of weakness or old age. Many others are apprehensive about visiting an audiologist for the first time, unsure of how the experience will be. But if you find yourself turning up the TV louder than you used to, or frequently asking people to repeat themselves because their voices sound muffled, having your hearing checked is vital. Hearing loss can occur in people of all ages and, if left untreated, can have a variety of harmful effects, both personal and professional. Multiple studies have established connections between hearing loss and everything from irritability, stress, and depression, to impaired memory, diminished health, and significantly lower earning power.

A recent survey by the Better Hearing Institute indicated that individuals with untreated hearing loss take home up to $30,000 less annually than their normalhearing counterparts. It also found that the unemployment rate among those with severe hearing loss is double that of the normal-hearing population. The use of hearing aids was found to be a significant equalizer in both realms. Considering that about 60 percent of people with hearing loss in the U.S. are below the retirement age, these findings are quite significant. ore people are living longer than ever before. This, superficially, sounds ideal. One of the many implications of our increasing longevity, however, is that many are surviving with extreme limitations causing daily activities to become difficult or impossible. When someone reaches a time at which he or she needs assistance doing routine activities, such as changing clothes or bathing, the responsibility many times falls to his or her children, spouse, or other family members to give care. Questions arise: Which family member will stop working to provide care? Will this disrupt the family structure? What is the quality of care that this relative can provide, and at what cost — financial, emotional, or otherwise?

These are among the fleeting questions that crossed my mind the day that my grandfather asked for help changing his Depends. His request caught me off guard; luckily, though, my family and I had prepared for this very scenario when we signed him up for long-term care insurance. Because of this, I was able to call a qualified in-home care provider, who began visiting my grandfather at home every morning, afternoon and evening, to help him continue living as independently as possible. One client I often think of was a woman in her early 50s, who took out a policy before becoming terminally ill. When she no longer could perform daily activities, her husband was able to bring 24-hour care into their home for five years, until she passed away. Meanwhile, he continued working and did not have to touch the couple’s retirement savings. If he had tried to pay for these services out of pocket, he would have bankrupted himself both financially and emotionally. Sobering experiences like this are becoming increasingly common, making long-term care an indispensable component of today’s retirement plans. Decompression Therapy

hen you suffer from spinal conditions such as disc protrusions, pinched nerves or sciatica, surgery is a double whammy: it costs tens of thousands of dollars, and it often fails to correct the ailment. Spinal decompression therapy is a nonsurgical alternative treatment that is effective, noninvasive, and painless â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and it costs about onetenth the price of surgery. Nearly a decade ago, Dr. John Livingston began using spinal decompression therapy

for his patients with spinal disc problems. The treatment was so successful that, almost 10 years later, Dr. Livingston continues to use it to treat a variety of spinal issues in the back and neck, such as disc protrusions, herniations, and bulges, as well as conditions including pinched nerves and sciatica.

This force separates the vertebrae around the protruded disc, creating a vacuum-like effect that draws the disc away from the spinal nerve and back where it belongs. “It’s quick and easy,” Dr. Livingston says. “A lot of people actually fall asleep during it.” This therapy is noninvasive, painless, and gradual in nature. It incrementally moves the disc back into place over four

to eight weeks of treatment, depending on how significant the protrusion is. “Much like orthodontics moves the teeth slowly into place with time and pressure,” Dr. Livingston explains, “decompression therapy moves the discs slowly with time and pressure.” Because spinal decompression therapy is painless, it doesn’t involve cortisone injections or any other medications. Patients also experience significantly shorter recovery times than those following surgery. Dr. Livingston follows up decompression therapy with adjunctive treatments, which help to keep the disc in the right place, and nutritional counseling to promote recovery and overall health. He stresses health and wellness, and actively incorporates them in his treatments to ensure that his patients’ bodies have the

ExpErt Advice Safely Alleviate Sciatic Nerve Pain

e address many health concerns in my office but one of the most common problems that I see daily is sciatica — an acutely painful condition that results from the inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of the leg into the calf, ankle and foot, often causing severe cramping or numbness of the toes, and spasms in the lower back and buttock. Not only is sciatica painful, but it can also be very complex and derive from a number of causes: • spinal disc herniation, in which the outer layers of the disc fray or tear and result in a protrusion of the intradiscal material with pressure on the sciatic nerve roots;

• tight piriformis muscles of the buttock which compress the sciatic nerve at its emanation from the sciatic notch of the pelvis; • spinal stenosis, a congenital or acquired, degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal which physically compresses the sciatic nerve roots; • spinal degenerative disc disease/ osteoarthritis, (also known as degenerative arthritis of the spine) that results in bone spur formation that can rub against the sciatic nerve roots as they leave the spine; • postural changes related to pregnancy, which results in laxity of the ligaments of the pelvis and sacroiliac joint that can refer pain along the sciatic nerve; • along with a number of others. The good news is that in many of these cases, I have had great success at alleviating the condition of sciatic nerve irritation with entirely conservative approaches — chiropractic treatments, physical therapy, non-surgical spinal decompression therapy, myofascial release, and nutrition — and saved patients tens of thousands of dollars on costly and invasive injections and surgeries.

The key to the treatment is the evaluation of the condition at its earliest onset, before there are chronic or permanent manifestations of nerve root damage. Once a spinal nerve root has become compressed or irritated, it can quickly deteriorate and degenerate within a matter of only a few weeks to cause severe, unrelenting pain from the nerve root damage itself; muscle spasms; muscular atrophy and loss of muscle mass; and resultant weakness in the leg, leading to noticeable gait changes, and instability in walking. At its advanced stages, sciatic pain can be debilitating and cause the patient to require use of a cane, walker or wheelchair to get around, since the nerve becomes damaged beyond the body’s ability to repair it; it can even result in signs of loss of bowel or bladder control. For more than 20 years, I have treated the condition of sciatica safely and effectively in my office through conservative management, and have helped to restore health to thousands of patients who thought that they had no other options. Dawn Miller, who designed and facilitates the series at Partners to Empowerment, explains that many migraine sufferers either hold their breath or take only shallow breaths. By gaining an awareness of these subconscious habits, participants can make conscious behavioral corrections in their daily lives, which help to provide continuing relief from their migraines. Yoga to Heal Back Pain, Dawn’s other sixweek series at Partners to Empowerment,

focuses more on each individual yoga pose and the sensations it invokes. “Many poses are performed lying on the back,” Dawn explains, “because that puts the least amount of pressure on the spine. An example would be to lie on your back and bring each leg slowly to your chest while exhaling, extend it while inhaling, and alternate, trying to identify asymmetries in your body. If you discover, for example, that one side of your back is weaker than the other, you can strengthen the weaker side through subsequent postures to alleviate back pain that resulted from that muscular imbalance.” These new specialized yoga classes are now offered on a continual basis at Partners to Empowerment. ost understand that stress takes a toll on our physical and mental health and wellbeing. While a warm bath can be relaxing, for serious stress reduction consider glassblowing. Some quality time at the Glass Bubble Project in Ohio City will burst your pressures and tension. The creation of any kind of art can reduce stress in three significant ways. First, the distraction of creating something will take your mind off whatever is stressing you out, allowing you to return to the problem with a clearer head. Secondly, creativity can completely engage our attention to the point where we are in a state of what psychologists call â&#x20AC;&#x153;flow.â&#x20AC;? This complete absorption is similar to meditation in the mentally-restorative benefits it delivers. Finally, investing time in a hobby such as drawing or, say, glassblowing, gives us a sense of having a more balanced life. Humankind has had a long-term fascination with glass. The earliest evidence of glassblowing was found in Jerusalem and dates back to the first century B.C.E. Beginning in the 13th century, Venetian glassworkers in Italy set international standards for form, color and elaborate originality. The studio glass movement began in the 1960s here in Ohio, specifically through workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art. The artists of the modern studio glass movement can be found worldwide and several iconic pieces can be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art. In that tradition, but on the other end of the spectrum from Venetian glass, the artists-in-residence at the Glass Bubble Project proudly create Clevetion glass â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an industrial, recycled, found-object kind of art glass. The glassblower will start a piece using the blowpipe to “gather” molten glass on the tip. While the glass is malleable, the piece is rolled on a slab of steel table to give it shape before a puff of air is introduced through the blowpipe. Large heatproof mitts can protect the hand from the heat of the blowpipe throughout the manipulation of the glass. Reheating the glass allows the glassblower to continue forming the project until it’s ready to finish by slowly cooling in the annealer. Instructor Dave Learn took him through the basic steps of creating a glass and some colorful teardrop-shaped ornaments to hang in a window. “I intend to keep practicing my technique,” Marc says. “But, next time I’ll dress with the furnace temperature in mind.” While the process seems rather straightforward, maintaining the temperature and controlling the shape of molten glass with a mind of its own

requires the kind of concentration that doesn’t allow for the worries of your day. efore I began to write this review of Sorry, I Have to Take This I checked my email. There were a couple easy messages to respond to, so I did. Then I deleted a few messages about online sales from a list-serve I belong to. That felt sort of productive. Once I opened a new word processing file, I thought about how to begin this review. Nothing came to mind immediately, so I scanned my Twitter feed and checked Instagram in case anything new needed my attention. For some reason, no ideas came to me about the writing I needed to do. So frustrating. What’s this? My phone’s buzzing with a text message from my daughter. Hahaha. I’ll just shoot her a quick text back. Maybe I’ll try to finally beat level 165 of Candy Crush, then I’ll be ready to write…

If this sounds familiar, you’ll be able to relate immediately to the travails of Rust and Kramer’s fictional protagonist, Ben. His story is set forth throughout Sorry, I Have to Take This to illustrate the struggles we face to keep

our priorities in the face of constant digital distractions. Instead of making our lives simpler and easier, they can make our lives complicated and messy. Ben’s story is rather dramatic. He has trouble at home; he has crises at work; he wrecks his car. But the most important message at the beginning of his story is that he has lost his sense of what is important and of value in his life. His lack of focus and feelings of stress contribute to the chaos. Spoiler Alert: Ben begins to take steps to regain his focus, reduce his stress and readjust his priorities. Sorry, I Have to Take This is marketed to business professionals who need to follow Ben’s approach to learn the value of “single tasking” in an electronic multi-tasking age. This book, however, has value for everyone. The demands of keeping current with social media, and the overload of information from electronic sources, has severely reduced the time we need to spend with our thoughts.

Somehow, we are not scheduling those quiet moments of reflection into our calendars. We aren’t focusing on a single task with a clear mind, so the really important matters are not receiving our attention. Without giving quality time to important tasks we are letting life’s minutiae take over; we’re failing to live up to our potential productivity and we’re letting those really creative ideas slip away. While we may know all this intuitively, Rust and Kramer’s book has specific steps we can take to get back to a place of sanity. Small habits can make distinct differences in our personal and professional lives. The authors don’t suggest that we do away with our smart phones, but maybe we don’t need to be checking them while we’re at meetings or having dinner with our families. Now that I’ve finally given my undivided attention to the task of writing this book review, I felt the words start flowing and my sense of accomplishment is restored. Candy Crush can wait.

lex Nemet never has been one to turn down a challenge. The veteran ultra-marathon runner and former doorto-door salesman is no stranger to hard work. Fifteen years ago, when Alex got a call from a friend who was selling factorydirect dining room sets, he had a greater vision: to make all sorts of premium home furnishings and leisure products available under one roof, at factory-direct prices. To achieve a seamless look, they had to trace along the mortar and remove the surrounding bricks, and then fill in the space around the new window with bricks that fit with the home’s existing pattern.

eaturing more than 380 eclectic gardens, the garden walk is a free, self-guided tour, just under three hours from Cleveland. In fact, the Garden Walk has become such an attractive destination that one in five of its 60,000-plus visitors comes from more than 50 miles away. The Garden Walk in Buffalo was first held in July 1995 and included 29 gardens. The size and scope of the walk has increased to the point that the New York Times recognized it as the largest garden walk in the country in 2013. In honor of its 20th year, Garden Walk Buffalo has published a commemorative guide to the gardens, featuring plenty of how-to articles to transplant what you view in Buffalo to Cleveland soil. The commemorative publication can be obtained during the weekend of the walk at any of the three walk headquarters for $10. Although there has never been an admission fee, the voluntary contributions in the last few years have enabled the Garden Walk to fund $30,000 worth of grants for 70 different community garden projects. The Garden Walk also showcases Buffalo’s architecture, both public and private. The walk features six distinct neighborhoods: Elmwood Village, Symphony Circle & Kleinhans, the Cottage District, the Historic West Village, Allentown and Columbus Park/Prospect Hill. Each neighborhood sustains its own character and architectural style, from Elmwood Village’s landmark churches, synagogues and chapels, to Allentown’s Italianate, Queen Anne and Second Empire residences, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Limestone-eating algae has worked its way up to Ohio, mainly from southern states, and is attaching itself to roofs, causing them to deteriorate rapidly, Michael says. From the curb, these organisms appear to be dark, dirty streaks, running down the roof. And they’re not alone. “There are lichens, moss, and all sorts of different organisms that can damage roofs,”

Michael explains. “It’s been a real issue for Ohio homeowners, in the past five years especially.” These organisms thrive, particularly on the north side of roofs, where the sun is less intense and moisture is prevalent. “They attach themselves to the roof and eat the limestone that’s built into the shingles to give them weight,” Michael says.

Gloeocapsa magma, the most common species of roof algae, produces a dark pigment to protect itself from the sun, according to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. This dark discoloration absorbs sunlight, heating the roof and, transitively, the house. This has two main consequences: in the short run, the house’s cooling bills will increase; in the long run, if the algae is left unaddressed, it will cause irreversible damage, necessitating the installation of a new roof. “It looks unsightly and hurts the curb appeal of a home, but also deteriorates the structural ability of a roof,” Michael explains. “Not ridding this from your roof is like skipping an oil change in your car and having to replace your engine.” In fact, Michael says, keeping a roof clean and free of destructive organisms

he snow is finally melting. The blades of grass in our lawns are poking through the perennial white blanket, and it’s beginning to feel like springtime. Cultivating a robust lawn not only enriches your family’s living space but also bolsters the local ecosystem and keeps the neighborhood looking refined. Now is the time to take a look at your yard, give it a thorough once-over, and make sure it’s ready to thrive in the summer heat. Your yard is a living, breathing entity that is constantly evolving. A lot probably happened while it was buried beneath the snow all winter long, so reviewing it is vital. You can start by giving your lawn a nice, moderate raking to uncover anything hidden under surface debris.

Check for damage from animals, to see if pest control is in order. Moles can be particularly damaging to lawns. They often leave unsightly tunnels and mounds, tearing up your yard’s root systems in the process, and opening the way for other small critters to invade. Deer and geese are among other wildlife that, while enchanting during brief visits, can be detrimental to your yard. We highly recommend aeration as part of your lawn’s annual maintenance regimen. Aeration involves loosening the soil, which naturally becomes compacted over the course of the year. This process ventilates the lawn and opens the way for water and fertilizer to reach the roots. Have your yard evaluated to determine whether it’s necessary to apply lime and, if so, how much. Lime neutralizes the yard, relieving it of the acidity that’s common in shaded areas around Northeast Ohio. “Fertilizer lockup,” which can occur in acidic parts of lawns, is when nutrients and fertilizer remain trapped in the soil and cannot be absorbed into the lawn. Lime application helps to prevent this. Fertilize only after aerating and applying lime, if necessary, so that it can reach your lawn’s roots uninhibited by compact and/or acidic soil. About this time, you also want to make sure your watering

system is ready, whether it’s a network of sprinklers or a single hose. Dethatching is important to remove layers of dead grass (thatch) that build up in the lawn over the years. Then, if your lawn has dead patches, overseeding will help to turn them lush. All of these preparations are necessary to reduce stress in your lawn and cultivate a more robust grass plant that’s strong enough to handle the summer sun. If you’re installing or replacing hardwood floors, consider using salvaged wood for a unique look that’s also eco-friendly. ExpErt Advice Regaining Control over Electronic Distractions

odern technology can help increase productivity, but it can also serve as a distraction from more important tasks and provide a temptation to put them off. Professionals need to use digital devices in a limited, purposeful and disciplined way. Many businesspeople struggle daily to maintain their focus in the face of modern technology. It’s easy to be distracted by electronic work (email, texting, checking Facebook) instead of doing strategic items such as writing a brief, creating a presentation, setting up a meeting to terminate an employee, or dealing with a complex billing situation. In essence, many businesspeople don’t make the harder tasks a priority.

This common preference is compounded by portable electronic devices because texting, instant messaging, social media, Internet news, and other electronic distractions are readily available on tablets and smart phones. Frequently, people let curiosity distract them from their real priorities. Basex, which describes itself as “the world’s foremost authority on the issues companies face as they enter the knowledge economy,” estimates that companies lose $650 billion each year due to the “cost of unnecessary interruptions” in terms of lost productivity and innovation. Throughout my coaching work, I’ve met many professionals with chaotic lives who find little time for serious thinking. They seem to be constantly bombarded by email, instant messaging, text messages, Twitter, pings and other electronic distractions. They feel that electronic devices are controlling them, and not vice versa. Because they’re reacting too much to the distractions in their life, they feel stressed out and have cluttered minds. One of the symptoms of somebody in this situation is an absence of focus. They juggle between their personal and professional lives and seem to be unsuccessful in each camp. To begin to address this problem, I encourage my clients to follow several rules: RulE 1: Actually attend all meetings. This means more than just being physically present; it also means being mentally present — focusing exclusively on the

issues at hand and bringing to bear all of your faculties on those issues. You should not be typing, sending emails, texting, checking messages or in any way using a cell phone during a meeting. Focusing in this way will ensure shorter, better and more productive meetings. RulE 2: Don’t take or make any calls while driving to work or for the first hour at the office — no appointments either. Set the time aside to accomplish strategic activities. Ideas will come if you don’t drive them away with “noise.” They are like fish: they take time, patience and quiet to catch. RulE 3: Always have a specific purpose and a time period in mind when using the Internet, especially social networking sites. Write it down and stick to it. If you can, even set an alarm to remind you. RulE 4: Don’t check your cell phone or take calls while speaking to someone. Not only is it rude, but it also keeps you from focusing on what they are saying and limits your response. It shows you are not really mentally or emotionally there for the person, and indicates you would rather be somewhere else. These practices won’t come easily. They will require time and mindfulness before becoming part of your routine. I promise the effort will be worth it — measured in increased productivity, healthier relationships and noticeably less chaos.

Her entrepreneurial spirit awoke as she watched her mom and grandpa build their businesses from scratch. “My grandpa laid the foundation for my mom,” Loren says. “I saw her work hard, a lot of late nights. There were times when she had to stay in the office until the morning.” As Loren got older, she spent time working at Robin’s office. It wasn’t long before Loren began bringing in clients. After graduating from college, Loren moved to Nashville to pursue a master’s degree, during which time she continued to gain experience through working at another agent’s office. A natural fit in the industry, Loren created her own agency in 2008 in Tennessee. About four years later, State Farm offered her a job as territory sales leader in Nashville, a position that puts her in charge of agents in the area. “Hard work and determination were things that my parents really stressed to me,” Loren says. As she progressed through her career, she and her mom

f you’re trying to brush up on your mountain biking skills, you could try biking to work using some of the city’s designated bike lanes. The extremes of the winter season created the kinds of craters designed especially for extreme commuting. Or, you could practice your skills in safer conditions on trails in the Cleveland Metroparks. “Mountain biking is just exploding locally,” according to Travis Peebles at Blazing Saddle Cycle on Detroit Ave. “It’s a great way to experience the beauty of our parks and the thrill of active outdoor recreation.” Several new initiatives have opened up those possibilities for local biking enthusiasts, as well as other trail users such as hikers, runners and equestrians. Under the guidance of the Cleveland Metroparks Executive Director, Brian Zimmerman and mountain bike enthusiast, Metroparks Commissioner, Dan Moore, the parks system has taken its mission of conservation, education and recreation to a whole new level. Realizing that the two-mile mountain biking trail located in the Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation was insuﬃcient to satisfy the needs of local biking groups, the Metroparks agency conducted a study of its existing trails and determined that a low-impact, sustainable single-track trail could conserve the natural environment and provide a healthy, active option to bring the community into the parks. Building the nine-mile Royalview Trail in the Mill Stream Run Reservation was a team effort. The Metroparks forged

a partnership with CAMBA (the Cleveland chapter of the International Mountain Biking Association, or IMBA). CAMBA provided 1,870 volunteer hours over nine months to assist the Metroparks staff with design, building, flagging and finish work on the Royalview Trail. An exhaustive inventory and analysis of the plant and animal life, and soil, was conducted prior to building the trail. The mountain biking community is all about natural conservation, working diligently to maintain the pristine beauty of the trail and continuing to monitor its environmental impact. Adding to the awareness, funding and volunteer support, local craft brewer, Matt Cole of Fat Head’s Tap House & Brewery, created the Trail Head Pale Ale. $10,000 of proceeds from its sale last summer were donated to the Trails Fund of the Metroparks to assist with the purchase of building equipment, training and materials. Cole was awarded the first annual “Trails Champion” corporate sponsor award from the Metroparks. The Trail Head Pale Ale even won a silver medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival. Another initiative was recently made possible when the City of Cleveland was awarded a $10,000 grant from the aforementioned IMBA for the development of a mountain bike skills park in Kerruish Park, located in the Lee-Harvard neighborhood. The skills park will provide riding opportunities for yet more mountain bikers. The Cleveland Metroparks will offer assistance in the design and maintenance of Kerruish’s new trail. Nancy Desmond, Cleveland Metroparks’ Director of Special Projects, says we can expect a third trail to open June 7 — weather permitting — in the Bedford Reservation. She anticipates that yet another multi-use trail will be opening at the north end of the Rocky River Reservation. Visitors have been riding the trail along the river for the last 50 years, so it made sense to build a sustainable, environmentally low-impact trail at that location. An assessment of that area is currently being conducted. Originally, there were only two miles of mountain biking trails while there existed 200 miles of paved trails and 90 miles of horseback riding trails in the Metroparks. Thanks to the guidance and vision of Brian Zimmerman and the dedication of riding groups like CAMBA, the miles of available riding trails is catching up to the huge demand. The interest in this sport will only continue to expand once trails are opened in Summit County and in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, as planned in the near future. Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge, David Matia, is an avid mountain biker and has been an active supporter of the growth of the sport locally. He appreciates the fact that Royalview Trail has proven to be such a success. “The trail satisfies all ability levels,” Judge Matia notes. “I’d really like to see Cleveland develop a reputation as a mountain biking destination.” James Rychak, co-owner of Blazing Saddle Cycle, has noticed a definite increase in sales of mountain bikes. Blazing Saddle Cycle and Spin bike shop in Lakewood also sponsor mountain bike racing teams. Time trials will be conducted on three Tuesdays in June at the Royalview Trail in Strongsville, for interested riders. While touring the dealership you will see many vintage Harleys including Elvis Presley’s 1975 Harley-Davidson. Across from the Texaco station is the Harley Diner, a unique and historical aspect of South East Harley-Davidson. This diner car is impeccably preserved from the 1940s. South East HarleyDavidson purchased the Worcester Dining Car in 1989 and maintained its midcentury charm. “It was brought to Ohio on a semi-truck,” Dave says. “A portion of a dealership side wall was knocked down to allow the diner to be positioned inside our motorcycle building.” The newly built South East Gears and Cheers is a family-oriented restaurant and bar, serving everything from affordable sandwiches to steak and shrimp, as well as a variety of vegan dishes. The restaurant features motorcycles from all over the world, such as Spain, East Germany, Japan and Russia, hanging from the ceilings and other areas overlooking the dining areas. Motorcycle races and other sporting events play on the restaurant’s big screen TV. Live bands perform in the main dining area. Head to the second dining area and you will find five see-through garage doors that lead to the beautifully landscaped back patio. Barbecues, tailgate parties, bike and car cruise-ins are plentiful all year long. Head over to the expansive MotorClothes department and you’ll find a variety of Harley-Davidson apparel for men, women and the little ones. It carries everything from boots, jackets and helmets, to furniture and hammocks. If you were around in the 70s, you probably remember that Harley-Davidson also produced golf cars at the time. That
