Winter 2012/13 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 3

A

few months ago, I relocated from Alberta back to my hometown: Saskatoon. Over the past decade that I have been away, this beautiful city has expanded and developed, yet remained the friendly and familiar place that I remember. My family and I are truly enjoying settling back in and making a new home for ourselves.

What is it that makes a house a home? Is it the builder who creates the place for you to live? Is it the decorator that helps bring out your style? Is it the professional who offers unique products or services to give your home that little extra something? Is it your neighbourhood? I am excited to share with you the story of two renowned Saskatoon builders—Evolution Homes and Decora Homes Limited—who have joined together to embark on a new project in Saskatoon’s Greenbryre Estates development. Meet the builders behind the shared vision of creating a unique, yet functional, dream home for you. Who knows? Perhaps your next move will be to this desired community. If adding on to your existing home, there are few pointers for you to consider to save time and frustration in the long run. Expanding your space is an excellent investment, and we list some considerations to keep in mind during the process. As winter trudges on, take the time to settle in and dream about what to do with your master suite. For inspiration, we share a few hints that will lead you in the right direction. To help keep you warm, we take a look at fireplaces; adding ambience to any room of your house is made simple with the right type of fireplace. For all you cooking enthusiasts, Gordon Ramsay shares with us his own personal kitchen—and what a kitchen it is. Discover the inspirations behind his functional-yetgorgeous set-up, and perhaps you will find yourself planning your own dream kitchen. As we embark in this New Year, I wish for all of you the best on your home resolutions. Whether it is unpacking from a recent move, tackling that renovation, or dreaming of your up-andcoming yard plans, here’s to making your house a home.

fireplace has irresistible charm: the warmth and beauty of the flames commands relaxation and coziness to a room. The winter season becomes more enjoyable when gathering around a crackling fire. Not only do fireplaces add much appreciated warmth to a home, but there is an additional aesthetic charm. You can choose from a vast array of styles, once you consider different finishing options, such as trims, panels, doors and even mantles. The mantle and the surrounding décor really set the tone, regardless of the type of fireplace. These elements can be interchanged if and when the time comes to renovate or update your home’s style.

14

What is the interior (and even exterior) look of your home? If you have a more classic style, you might incorporate a

brick or stone surround into your space rather than an ultramodern fireplace with brushed steel. If your home is country-cozy, a good match would be a stove. For the ultramodern home, a fireplace with marble, limestone or granite provides a great centerpiece or focus for the design scheme. If you’ve recently added on to your home, a fireplace helps to heat the extra space. For example, a dining room expansion or upgrade can be made complete by installing a fireplace. Imagine the guests at your next dinner party enjoying a glass of wine and mingling in front of the warm flames. Your fireplace choice should be as unique as you and your home. The traditional wood-burning fireplace provides efficient heating, is durable and offers a much-

appreciated level of coziness. Because the surrounds and doors can be customized for a particular look, they suit many different styles of décor. For safety reasons, wood-burning fireplaces with masonry chimneys require regular maintenance. This type of fireplace is useful for heating localized areas (some even have a heat distribution system) and is cost-effective to operate. Inefficient wood fireplaces can be updated by installing a wood insert; these inserts are not only good for retrofits, but for new fireplace additions as well. Wood-burning stoves complement a traditional or rustic décor, and serve homeowners well with efficient heating. They require a chimney or natural venting system.

ager to get to work on his new acreage last summer, Brad Valkenburg bought the equipment he needed to build his own basement, and finish his driveway. After the success he had working on his own home, Brad opened Countryside Excavating and Skidsteer Service Limited to help Saskatoon and area with their excavating, drilling, landscaping, and snow removal needs. Specializing in local excavation for basements, fences and decks, and landscaping, Countryside Excavating has also been busy this winter keeping the snow at bay. This fall brought record breaking levels of snow to Saskatchewan, and Countryside has the professional equipment needed to quickly remove the hazardous white stuff from your residential, commercial, or industrial property. Renovations and new builds aren’t finished on a nine to five schedule, and Countryside Excavating doesn’t operate on one either. By being available weekends and evenings, Brad is able to complete residential work when home owners are available. This also means that businesses requiring work don’t have to interrupt their business hours or disrupt their customers while snow removal or excavating is being completed. While Countryside is still a young company, it already has plenty of happy customers. “Brad was on time, did good

work, and was easy to deal with. He’s more than genuine,” said Kelly Thimm from Norcan. Before You Add on . . . By FHS STAFF

H

omeowners add on to their homes for a variety of reasons, namely because they enjoy their house and its location but need additional room. Extra space might be required because of an expanding family. Others might desire a new office or guest bedroom. Kitchen expansions, front entranceway developments, media rooms, sun porches – the list of potential additions goes on and on. Additions require careful planning and consultation. Utilizing the professional services of engineers, architects, renovators, or even designers can save you time and frustration in the end. These services help prevent costly mistakes and ensure nothing unexpected arises. Whether your addition is small in scale— for example, adding a dormer window— or a large one—such as building a new wing—there are several things to consider. Talk with your contractor

14

FineHomes

SASKATOON

about the size and scope of your desired addition. A professional will ensure the addition meets your needs and works well with the existing house. He or she can also asses how the project affects landscaping alterations.

For example, are there any problems with the existing roof or foundation? Does the roof have proper water drainage and will the addition be up to code? Does a new drainage system have to be installed or will the existing one be sufficient?

Zoning and bylaw regulations must be considered to prevent costly penalties and fines. A building inspector can advise you of the local bylaws and zoning requirements, as well as provincial building codes. Your insurance agent will assess how the addition and the work project will affect your current insurance plan, and whether or not you need extra insurance to protect against any liabilities. Also, consult your mortgage lender about approval of the project: you don’t want a new addition to jeopardize your current mortgage standing.

Your current plumbing and electrical systems may be maximized with the addition. Your contractor will work with you to determine if plumbing should be upgraded and the electrical system expanded in order to meet code. You will also want to consider television and cable services for the addition. Oftentimes, when homeowners expand their space they upgrade with home automation systems. Planning with a home automation expert will help you determine electrical system requirements.

A structural engineer or architect can determine how the new addition will affect the current structure of the house.

Your home’s heating and ventilation needs will increase with the the addition of more space. You might want to use this as an opportunity to upgrade to an energy

efficient system that will operate better and save you money in the long run. And of course there are the various fixtures and finishes to go into the new space. Will you require new lighting or appliances? How will you decorate the new area? Will the finishes match the existing ones throughout the house? Collaborating with a designer will give you a better idea of your options. You will also want to make sure you use the services of licensed installers for new floors, windows, doors or other products. A product that is not installed properly loses its warranty. Although there are several things to keep in mind while planning an addition to your home, it is an investment that increases your property value and gives you years of (spacious) enjoyment. Consulting with professionals about the project will make sure it is done as efficiently and as effectively as possible. FHS

In just three short years, Calvin and his team have completed over 400 contracts

Mike was prepared and knowledgeable when we met and I did not feel pressured to do something different than what I wanted. Mike made it clear that if I thought we needed to pull the house off the market for any reason, he would not hold me to the contract we signed.

Mike offers the free service of a professional decorator to come in and make your home more attractive for prospective buyers. He also connects you with experienced and reasonable technical help – such as painters that we pay only when the house sells

What do you feel were the outstanding areas of the experience of working with Mike and the Gustus Group? I felt heard. I felt the entire Gustus Group was efficient, effective, and followed Mike’s philosophy of listening and responding to clients. Also, being from a rural area, Mike is more like what I am familiar with: he is honest.

Was there anything that you were surprised at in your dealings with Mike and the Gustus Group? The services provided: the professional decorator, the painter etc. More services are provided that I didn’t have need for i.e. He would buy a potential buyer’s home so that person could buy your home.

Do you feel that your experience was unique and different?

Were your expectations met or were they exceeded?

Yes, in a very positive way. I felt all of Mike’s team was interested in selling our home for our benefit. His staff was excited about repeat home tours by buyers, and his agents were respectful about booking appointments for home tours.

Definitely exceeded! In the past I have felt resentful about the percentage paid for an agent to sell a house. Not this time. I felt Mike and the Gustus Group were worth the money I spent!

Why should readers of this magazine be concerned about climate change?

How will that impact our lifestyle?

CD: In a number of ways. As just one example, the spread of diseases like West Nile Virus, Hantavirus and tickborne Lyme disease has been linked to the change in our climate. That’s not good news for us.

Is the solution to climate change to stop burning fossil fuels in our vehicles and power plants? CD: We know that fossil fuels will continue to be used for a very long time. It’s not realistic or advisable to expect humanity to stop overnight. We believe that reducing fossil fuel emissions to a minimum is the key to a successful campaign to combat climate change. How is IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. involved in this campaign? CD: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a key weapon to combat climate change. IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. exists to ensure it is safe to store carbon dioxide (CO2) deep underground. Isn’t storing CO2 in the ground risky? CD: Everything has a risk in life. Sending our children off to school each day is risky, but as parents we take a series of steps to minimize risk. That’s exactly what we do in the new CCS industry. We’re here to minimize the risk of storing CO2 deep underground. What is CCS? CD: CCS is the process of capturing CO2 emissions from industrial complexes before it’s released into the atmosphere, putting it under high pressure and

pumping it into geologic formations one or two kilometres deep in the ground.

nique homes catch everyone’s eye. As a child I remember riding in the car with my parents and brother looking out the window in awe of those one-of-a-kind homes, yelling “that one’s my favourite!” I would tell my parents how much I wanted a nice house unlike any other when I grew up. To be honest, I think most people envision, dream and tell themselves that, too.

Two companies are helping Saskatoon build those dream homes: Evolution Homes and Decora Homes Limited. Both companies specialize in custombuilt homes that start with the clients’ imagination. Much work goes into a custom home and the staff at these two organizations are here to help make the process as easy and smooth as possible.

Luxury and Design Excellence: Evolution Homes Evolution Homes was founded in 2006 by Dustin Grenier. Dustin’s parents own Daon Construction Limited in Saskatoon and grew up around the industry. After working for Daon, framing houses for 10 years he decided to pave his own

way and established Evolution Homes. Evolution specializes in building a home that not all your neighbours have and tailoring it to your liking. Evolution Homes’ mission is to be the choice builder for those who value luxury, quality and design excellence. Dustin uses the latest high-quality materials and construction techniques. He aims to give people more for their money combining artistic conceptions and drafts with modern conveniences and energy efficiency. Dustin’s wife Diedre is the interior decorator and does a considerable amount of research into design. She familiarizes herself with designs from Canada and overseas evaluating the feasibility of each in Saskatoon and offering these options to their clients.

For the past six years, Dustin has focused primarily on building high-end properties. However, he is now branching out into the new homeowner market. Dustin wanted an opportunity to expand his expertise and recognized the need to make the same Evolution quality homes for people who are new to the marketplace. Dustin is now focusing on developing smaller and more affordable homes under the Evolution Homes brand. Although this is a new venture for Dustin, you can expect the same expertise and customer satisfaction you always get from the company. Dustin is not a hobby home builder. He takes his business seriously and is 100 percent involved in all operations, working with people and their budgets. He is always on-site and has contact with every client that walks through his

door. His clients recognize this and highly recommend working with Dustin. They appreciate how professional, attentive, detailed and creative his team is. Buyers have commented on his accessibility, stating that when needed, Dustin was only a phone call away and returned messages promptly. You can find Evolution’s newest properties in Martensville and Evergreen. Evergreen is one of the most desirable communities in the city combining natural landscape and urban appeal. Martensville offers the best of both worlds for young families: small community living with easy access to the big city and its amenities. With Dustin’s new business objective, new homeowners now have the opportunity to own a home in Evergreen and Martensville at affordable prices.

Distinctive Designs: Decora Homes Limited Like Evolution Homes, Decora Homes Limited has a similar past. Owners Rick Iula, a journeyman mason, and his wife Rhonda wanted Saskatoon residents to have the homes they dreamed about. Opening six years ago, Decora crafts those unique and custom builds that are a part of your family history. Today, the company is now one of Saskatoon’s premier home builders. Decora’s goal is to revolutionize the new housing industry in Saskatoon. Rather than building speculation homes, they seek to take clients’ ideas and help make them functional. They build a limited number of homes each year which enables them to focus on distinctive designs and details. Innovative ideas and cutting edge design, coupled with quality craftsmanship, are the groundwork of every Decora-built home. Every project is personally overseen by Decora owners. The entire process is a continuous free exchange of ideas between owners and clients, from drafting the floor plans to the floor finish. While Rick is part of the on-site construction, Rhonda acts as a personal shopper helping clients choose a range of products from all Decora’s different suppliers. Both assist in making your dreams a reality and giving you helpful, professional advice along the way.

Decora knows how exciting building a home can be and the compulsion for clients to monitor the progress. To makes things even easier, Decora has implemented a 24/7 online program where clients can log in with a user name and password and access everything about their build. Clients can view the build calendar and schedule and take a look at photographs. With all the enthusiasm and activity surrounding construction, Rhonda explains that sometimes people, understandably, forget what products they have chosen. To help keeps things in order, Rhonda uploads a list of all the chosen products on the home page so clients can see and be reminded of exactly what is going into their home. Decora’s clients can also approve order changes on this account. Rick and Rhonda have won a number of awards in the industry, including a Bridges award in 2011 for best production home. The Bridges award recognizes excellence in the residential construction industry. They were also finalists for the Sabex Marketing award for business excellence in Saskatoon. They recently received the National Philanthropy award for their community involvement. Rick and Rhonda, together with Synergy 8 Community Builders and celebrity golfer Fred Couples, volunteered their time and supplied over $300,000 worth of renovations to the Saskatoon Crisis Nursery. Customer service and client satisfaction is crucial to the success of Decora. Decora has many years of experience in the construction industry and take pride in their ability to work with anyone to design a home that best suits them and their family, making the experience of building your dream home a comfortable and memorable one. Most of Decora’s business is in higherend homes, but can work with you and your budget to help create any scale of home. Currently, they have lots available in Rosewood, Evergreen and Martensville. They have two showhomes located on Gilles Crescent available for viewing on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Greenbryre Project Rhonda and Rick and Dustin and Diedre have known each other for over six years. Having lived down the street from each other they were well aware of each others’ business ventures. Meeting through the home building industry, Rick and Dustin requested each others’ expertise in the past. Rick wanted Dustin to do some framing on his house, while Dustin asked Rick to do some stone work on his home. As the friendship grew, the two realized their business outlooks, aims and goals were similar. Together, Evolution and Decora are embarking on the Greenbryre project. Greenbryre is a new development in Saskatoon and a blend of elegant homes and the natural beauty. Surrounding the Greenbryre Golf and Country Club, the area boasts a laid-back atmosphere and added real estate value. Situated on the south-eastern outskirts of Saskatoon just south of Rosewood, Greenbryre is one of the most desirable residential neighbourhoods in city. Minutes from the freeways, the area is close to urban amenities by simply crossing the number

16 highway and only a short drive away from Saskatoon’s downtown core. The lots in Greenbryre are large with room for that pool you’ve always wanted. It is perfect for those people with big home dreams and there really is no limit to the size of home you can build in Greenbryre. All lots are walk-out and you receive much more for the same price you would pay for a walk-out lot in the city. The area is architecturally-controlled and approved to prevent aesthetically mismatched housing. Colour, finish and style must meet development criteria. “Due to the prestige of the area and the size of the lots and prospective houses, a project like this benefits from and requires ideas and expertise from more than one company,” explains Dustin and Rhonda. Having two likeminded businesses onboard, sharing the workload not only reassures that the build is done in line with company values and goals, it also ensures that staff are always accessible and customer service is not compromised in the process. The underlying inspiration for this community is family. Family is important

to both Evolution and Decora, and both companies see Greenbryre Estates as an opportunity to create an environment that will enhance your family’s lifestyle. Greenbryre Estates offers the inspiration, relaxation and sense of belonging inherent in a small community with all the conveniences of city living. A Greenbryre showhome, built by both builders will be ready for viewing and purchase in the spring of 2013. What’s NeW aNd Next for 2013? By Meredith heron

can practically feel your eyes rolling and hear your groans as I write this—another designer telling you what’s trending for the coming year. You’d think we get a commission for our efforts to sell you on the newest, the greatest or “you’ve got to have it,” for fear of looking passé or out of touch with your home décor. More interesting than the latest trends are the methods by which they are conveyed and shared; welcome to the underbelly of the design world and straight-up decor delight. Do you Pin? Pinterest.com is a photo-sharing site that allows people to “pin” a picture from just about anywhere, and then have their followers “re-pin” to their own categorized boards. There are many categories set out by Pinterest that help you to search items, genres or concepts. For example, I’m currently designing a cupcake shoppe here in Toronto, and I was looking for ideas involving wooden spoons as art. I decided to broaden my search to “spoon art,” and found a seemingly endless array of it. Who knew plastic spoons could be turned into ombre wreaths? Pinterest offers a joyful variety of inspiration from fashion, to recipes, design, décor, landscaping and more. I often suggest that clients join the site, and pin inspirational ideas for their projects there; I follow them so that I can see their boards. They even allow you to make comments, such as “Over my dead body, we are so not doing that in your dining room!” To follow my boards, just put Meredith Heron into the search and hit Follow All. If you are considering a design or renovation project, another great site is Houzz.com, which just keeps growing in leaps and bounds. Designers like me have professional accounts and upload our projects for people to see, share and add to their inspiration boards. Again, you can share your boards and collect design ideas; you can even ask the designers specific questions, but I will caution you on this one: I get

hundreds of questions from people who are looking to copy or do-it-yourself an idea or space of mine, but designers don’t look kindly at questions that enable our work to be copied, and this includes our suppliers. Use the site for inspiration, and to shop for a designer you’d like to work with, but please keep in mind that the work you are looking at was paid for by someone else. Our clients wouldn’t like us giving the milk away for free, if you catch my drift. Decorpad.com is another site I go to for inspiration. Again, you can put specific search words in and look for articles and/or photographs. This site works better with general search words, such as living rooms, headboards and master bedroom. I sometimes narrow this down with qualifiers such as modern bedroom or grey living room.

In our office, we routinely roll our eyes and call something “bloggy”, which isn’t a good thing. However, it wouldn’t be a trends article if I didn’t at least give you a few actual design trends for 2013, would it?

These online communities and networks have a huge influence on trends and style, but you have to keep up. Things cycle through in the blink of an eye, so finding something that will be long-lasting can

Monaco Blue is the pantone colour of the year for 2013. As a devotee of blue, I’m thrilled by this. Every project on our present roster is based on blue, so I’m a happy designer. We’re pairing it with magenta and deep blue purples into violets.

Pattern, pattern, pattern; mixing and matching, layering, maximalist versus

minimalism—we can’t get enough. In a single room, we routinely use at least 10 fabrics and patterns, and more if I can swing it. Brass and gold—yes it’s back. We have several projects about to be published nationally, including a kitchen that is pink and gold, where we used polished brass pot lights throughout. It’s stunning and not dated. Greys. They continue to be strong, but now we are seeing them in woods: hardwood floors and case goods alike. Cerused oak and bleached oaks are back, but greyed—no salmon pink washes this time around. Michelle’s global inspirations work well with the beautiful showroom at Braid. On display are all types of flooring, custom drapery, window fashions, custom bedding, and upholstery. With decades in the business, FloForm can help you with every step from design to installation. Since the Saskatoon shop’s first day open in 1976, FloForm has been growing and changing to make renovating or building new countertops as simple as possible. This year, they completed a 4,000 square foot show room that features over 15 vignettes, and over 40 more displays to give their clients a better understanding of what their products truly look like in a home or business. here are many beautiful homes in the city that are situated in older areas with mature surroundings and convenient access to schools and amenities. When you live in a neighborhood that you love but have a home that has become tired and feels confined, renovating your existing home is a solution that will give you the functionality and aesthetic appeal that will enhance your lifestyle and your flare for style. The return on investment for kitchen and bath renovations can be 85 per cent and up. If you are planning on staying in the home for many years to come, the years of enjoyment in your new space is likely the best return on your investment. I recently worked with homeowners who loved their home and their neighborhood, but were constrained by the lack of functionality and the dated

appearance of the home’s interior. My customers’ home was built in 1984 with a traditional U-shaped oak kitchen. Their focus was to utilize unused spaces more effectively on the main floor and create an open concept space to accommodate large gatherings. They had two living rooms, a small kitchen and nook, and a separate dining room. The front living and dining rooms were not being used, so by removing the walls separating these spaces, an open concept space evolved. The nook and back living room became part of a new, very large kitchen. The homeowners love to entertain and wanted their home to be inviting and unobstructed. The dining room was opened to the kitchen and a bar unit was added between the kitchen and dining room. A 13 foot x 4 foot island was incorporated with seating for intimate family meals or large gatherings. The old fireplace was taken out and relocated. The wall separating the front living room and dining room was removed and replaced with a double sided fireplace that creates an impressive focal point and defines the two spaces, while still maintaining the open concept flow. These inspired elements create a showpiece ideal for entertaining.

AFTEr

Functional elements were a big consideration in this project. New LED pot lights and chandeliers replaced the sunshine ceiling and the use of high efficiency appliances in the kitchen and bar area captured the opportunity to make the space more energy efficient. They went from an electric stove to double wall ovens, built-in microwave, cooktop, stainless hood, side by side full fridge and freezer units. We also added a prep sink, four recycle bins, spice pullout storage units, tray dividers and rollouts to maximize functionality in the space. The upper cabinets now reach the ceiling to maximize their storage needs and glass doors add an element of interest. All base cabinets consist of drawers with full extension glides for easy access to cabinet contents. Soft-close features on all doors and drawers add the finishing touch to this elaborate renovation. The new space is not only beautiful but functions to suit the lifestyle of the family. FHS

hen Barbara Shawcross started Realistic Redesign in March 2011, she had one goal in mind: to make interior design easy and affordable to everybody. The home-based interior consultant works with home owners to make most of their space by using furniture and décor that they already have. Rather than reinventing the style at her clients’ home, Shawcross’ objective is to build upon the existing personal style. Shawcross grew up in Regina and received a diploma in Architectural and Building Technology from SIAST in Moose Jaw. After graduation, she

worked seven years in the engineering consulting industry, where she was a draft person. She moved to Saskatoon in 2005 and completed a Bachelor of Arts in Art History degree at the University of Saskatchewan, focusing on North American architecture. In 2010, she took a course to become a certified home stager in Canada. She is also a member of the Canadian Staging Professionals. “I believe my education and life experience makes me unique and set me apart from my competitors,” said Shawcross. “Having the technical and the academic background in architecture gave me a specialized perspective on interior design.”

Realistic Redesign has three branches. The first branch is to help owners stage their home for sale, either by consultation or the entire staging process. Shawcross will often work with the realtor and make recommendations for furniture rentals and purchases. The second branch is room organization, in which Shawcross uses existing items in the home to help redesign rooms. She will also make recommendations for purchases that are within the budget of her clients. Shawcross’ home in Lakeview, which she shares with her husband, is a testament to her expertise of renovating homes on a realistic budget.

owner, barbara shawcross

“My house was built in the 1980s and I have to work with oak cabinets,” she said. “I can’t afford a major renovation so I invested in a nice granite countertop for my bathroom that would look nice with the oak cabinetry. The room used to look really old-fashioned but now it looks modern with new sink, bath tub, and toilet.” According to Shawcross, bathrooms are the places to let your creative energy flow. “You want to inject a little bit of personality in your bathroom,” she said. “It’s an enclosed space so you can have fun with colors and wallpapers and it’s small enough that if you don’t like it, you can redo it quickly.” The third branch is custom purchasing. After making purchasing recommendations, Shawcross offers her clients the option of shopping with them, or she can go alone to bring items to the client. Shawcross also works on bachelor pads and says she wants to dispel the stereotype that interior design is only applicable to women. “Men want their homes to look nice too,” she said. “It’s more than putting up decorations and rearranging furniture. It’s about finding a purpose for each room in your house.” Shawcross is open to ideas from her customers and calls them to followup after consultation. Outside of her business, Shawcross is an active member of the Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan. She looks forward to expanding her business in the near future and making interior design affordable to everybody. FHS

unning seven restaurants and spearheading two new TV series, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen, Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay is a busy man. But he still enjoys cooking for family and friends, especially now that he has added a stunning, light-filled kitchen to his south London home.

Who designed your kitchen? “We had an extension built on the back of the house to take it, but the actual kitchen was designed by Richard Baker, who has a studio–Richard Baker Furniture–near Wimbledon. I went to school with his wife Rachel. He was a dream to work with; he really listens to the client. We had to

52

strike a balance between what works for me professionally, and what works on the domestic front with four small children. The kitchen had to be able to take a pounding and be aesthetically stunning without being too sterile and intimidating for a home environment. And it had to fit round the central stove–I can’t stand cooking with my back to everyone else because the cooker’s against a wall; it’s so antisocial. Richard kept me on line.”

What difference did having a designer make? “I had thought of stainless steel worktops, but he said they might seem too clinical at home and suggested the

honed granite, which looks amazing. He suggested all the glass to let in light, and we maximized storage space to avoid clutter. I showed him how I work so, for example, the worktops are much deeper than standard to take my large chopping boards.”

What is the cooker? “It’s a French commercial stove, tailor-made by Rorgue exactly as I wanted it. It’s a monster, about three metres long, absolutely to die for. It’s like having a Bentley in your kitchen: three-and-a-half tons of stainless steel that had to be craned over the house to get here. I’ve skimped on nothing–it cost £67,000

(approx. $106,000 CDN)–and I feel more comfortable cooking at home now than I’ve ever done. It’s a real centrepiece, as much a piece of furniture as a stove; people can stand around it with a glass of wine or join in the cooking. And it’s staggeringly powerful. I love the power, it’s amazing. Pans boil so fast, and you can get a decent colour on steaks or grills. I came in from Claridge’s on Christmas Day, and in 45 minutes, I’d cooked dinner for 27 people, and nobody was waiting for things, because it’s all there, everything’s at hand. And the fact that I use a £4.50 (approx. $7.20 CDN) blowtorch to light the stove makes it even better.”

Get the Look

Where do you eat? “The dining room opens onto the kitchen. We try to eat as a family on Saturdays, and also to have a classic Sunday lunch, where no one’s allowed to leave the table until we’ve all finished eating. But quick and easy food, like breakfast, we might eat at the coffee bar. From Friday to Monday, the kitchen is a family place, but from Monday to Friday, work takes precedence–I sometimes have filming or photography here–and my wife Tana uses the smaller kitchen in the basement to cook for the kids. In the summer, we can open the doors into the garden and eat out there, but we don’t have to bother setting up a barbecue, with the chargrill on the stove.”

4.54m

A coffee machine is inset above the breakfast bar, which appears solid but has pop-out doors and houses glass and china

Which other appliances did you choose? “The one thing I really wanted was an ice-making machine. To me, it’s as important as a dishwasher (of which we have two because I hate washing up). With those stupid little compartments in a fridge, everyone’s always howling for ice, especially in the summer. I have two large fridges standing together so they open out like a larder, and a small freezer, all by Miele and all hidden by doors, so nothing sticks out as an eyesore.”

Would you change anything? 5.98m

“Not a thing. Hell, definitely not. I wanted a perfect kitchen, and though I might not be easy to work for, that’s what I’ve got. It’s a dream, I love it.” FHS

EscapE:

Ideas for your Dream Master Suite By FHS STAFF

T

he “love nest” is where we start and end each day. A luxurious, warm and comfortable bedroom retreat is just the escape you need when you can’t get away.

There are countless ways to transform your master suite into a romantic retreat. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Think of the bed as the showcase of the room. A high quality mattress is an investment that will bring you years of rest and relaxation. Talk with a mattress specialist about determining the best mattress for your needs. Invest in high-quality bed linens to add more comfort. Incorporate high thread count linens with textured knit throws and a luxurious down comforter, and top it off with cushy pillows that reflect the room’s colour scheme. For inspiration, visit a linen retailer or opt to have bedding custom made. A headboard accentuates the bed, and draws the room’s decor together. Investigate unique headboards at a local vintage furniture retailer, design showroom, or even consider having one custom designed by a craftsman. Romance and serenity are created with an appropriate colour palette. For example, cream or ivory walls radiate warmth and lend to an intimate ambiance. By keeping the hues soft and muted, you can add an accent wall to highlight a lounging area within your master suite. Your designer can work with you to determine the most appropriate colours to maximize your space and complement the room’s design elements. Organization is essential: a cluttered bedroom takes all the romance out the space. Make sure your closets have adequate storage systems to keep shoes and clothing in place. Use baskets for magazines, books, or for storing extra blankets. Invest in unique accent pieces, such as an ornate dresser or vanity stand, to add charm and function to your space. Visit a lighting showroom to look into the various options available to keep your master suite inviting without being overpowered by the typical harsh overhead light. Strategically place different lamps around the room to establish a romantic effect; for example, “shadow lamps” have a magical illumination that create an intimate atmosphere. A drapery specialist can provide suggestions on how to enhance soft natural light while creating privacy. A spa-like master bath complements the romantic bedroom retreat by adding more space for you to relax and unwind. You can carry on the elegant and luxurious atmosphere in your master bath with

appropriate tile; marble, travertine, natural stone, or slate tiles enhance the fixtures and creates comfort in your spa-like bathroom. Discuss your plans with a tile expert, and opt for a professional installer to ensure the job is done properly. You will also want to consider floor heating to add another dimension to the suite. Upgrade your master bath with a Jacuzzi or soaker-style tub, creating the ultimate location for relaxation. More of a shower person? There are a variety of specialty shower fixtures that can be installed in your walk-in shower to create a true spa experience. The master bath also requires quality bath linens. Who doesn’t welcome a large, soft towel to wrap in after a bath? Specialty bath stores carry towel racks to keep your towels warm— an appreciated feature, especially during the winter months. Keep plush bathrobes handy for lounging, and add a thick, padded floor rug to bury your toes in while you get ready for the day. Creating a romantic and elegant master suite gives you a comfortable area in which to relax. You deserve the escape. FHS

The Top Mattress Myths

Wiseguys Mattresses Mark Stevens, owner 6 - 405 Circle Drive Saskatoon 306.652.1212 mstevens67@msn.com

3. Silk, cashmere and wool make a bed more comfortable.

E

ach person is unique and has different considerations when choosing the right mattress. There are a lot of assumptions people have about mattress selection. As a sleep expert, here are a few myths I’d like to clarify:

1. A firmer mattress is better. Often people purchase a firmer mattress in hopes of getting better back support. The truth is that the best mattress for your back is the one that feels the best to you. All mattresses provide pressure relief in the top portion of the mattress and back support in the bottom part. The best combination of the two and how they feel to you is what you should look for in a mattress. Ultimately, the best bed is the one that is most comfortable to you.

2. High coil count is critical for support. Mattress support is much more than simply the amount of coils. The coils do not make the difference.

62

Characteristics such as type, gauge and tempering are far more critical and important. High coil count alone in no way means you have a better bed and should not have a huge impact on your purchase decision.

FineHomes

SASKATOON

When used on a mattress, only small amounts of these materials are in the upper padding. This only makes a bed more expensive. When you cover your mattress with a pad and sheets, you do not directly feel the surface anyway.

4. Stores sell the same mattress under different names. Retailers often claim that a particular mattress they sell is comparable to a competitor’s mattress. Though you may find beds that are alike, most “comparables” have little in common. They may look exactly the same on the outside, but will likely have different amounts and grades of foam. Unless it is the same manufacturer and the bed has the same name at both locations, there will be a difference.

4. I save a lot of money when mattresses are 50% off. Be wary of retailers with frequent

half price sales. It can be a tell-tale sign that they have regularly inflated prices. These sales only give you the illusion that you are saving big.

5. A better quality mattress costs more. Firstly, the fourth piece of advice above debunks this myth. Secondly, price differences can reflect the price of the foam. Foams with higher grades and densities cost more. Yet, expensive foam does not necessarily mean more comfort. Again, purchase what you find comfortable, not what is more expensive.

6. Salespeople are always objective. In a perfect world this would be true. However, manufacturers offer financial incentives known as SPIFs (sales person incentive funds) to push various brands and models. Always keep in mind that only you can know what is best for you. If nothing else remember these simple rules: The only thing that matters in a mattress is comfort and durability. Nobody knows what is right for you, except you. Everybody has different comfort levels. Let your body tell you what is right. FHS

SASKATCHEWAN’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH

TYNDALL STONE

100th Anniversary for Saskatchewan’s Legislative Building, 450 millionth anniversary for the building’s stone BY JENNIFER CUGNET

T

his October a provincial landmark and architectural marvel, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building celebrated its 100th anniversary. Completed in 1912, and now affectionately dubbed The ‘Leg’ (pronounced as ‘ledge’), the building has been a timeless symbol of Saskatchewan for a century. The building is clad entirely in limestone called Tyndall stone. Tyndall stone looks like a cream beige to light tan coloured rock. Occasionally it will exhibit golden tan or blue grey hues. Its neutral colouring makes it appealing as a building product– it goes with anything. Its strength and durability are also pleasing characteristics to builders. But it is Tyndall stone’s remarkable beauty – stately yet sparkling, formidable yet delicate – that makes it stand out. Besides Saskatchewan’s Legislative Building, some of the most prestigious buildings in Saskatchewan and across Canada have Tyndall stone exteriors such as the Geological Sciences Building at the University of Saskatchewan, the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C., and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec . Municipal buildings, financial institutions, medical facilities, and churches commonly showcase Tyndall stone-clad exteriors. The stone is also a popular choice for home exteriors and accents such as columns, steps, and fireplaces. Tyndall stone was first observed along the banks of the Red River in the early 1800’s, and it was first used as a building material as far back as 1823 for construction of a warehouse at Lower Fort Garry in Manitoba. The stone gets its name from the town of Tyndall, Manitoba, the place where the stone was initially shipped from in the early 1900’s. One can imagine the effort it took to quarry, package, and transport the Tyndall stone by train from Tyndall to the Legislative Building construction site in Regina all those years ago, with some individual blocks weighing as much as eight tons. RIGHT The Legislattive Building

The ceremonial laying of the first cornerstone at the Legislative Building occurred on October 4, 1909 by the Governor General of Canada, His Excellency Earl Grey. Saskatchewan’s first Premier, T. Walter Scott, stated, “Let us think, as we lay stone on stone that a time is to come when these stones will be sacred because our hands have touched them...”. The Legislative Building preserves Saskatchewan’s history, and the Tyndall stone exterior preserves a portion of the Earth’s history. Tyndall stone is immediately distinguishable from other rocks by its mottled appearance. Darker tan

coloured branching structures can be seen amongst the light cream matrix. This mottling is not only visually pleasing, it is also scientifically significant. The branchy mottles are a type of fossil that, in conjunction with other fossils abundantly found in Tyndall stone, show evidence of life on Earth from over 400 million years ago.

honeycomb and chain patterns (Tabulate and Halysites corals), and they can resemble horns and sunflowers (Rugose and Receptaculites corals). These organisms and corals have been preserved as fossils within Tyndall stone. The next time you encounter Tyndall stone, take a close look and you’re bound to find some or all of these fossils in the rock.

Tyndall stone is a limestone rock that formed during the Ordovician period in Earth’s history approximately 450 million years ago. Marine seas extended across Western Canada, covering large portions of Saskatchewan and Manitoba with sea water. The marine waters were home to many organisms, including a variety of corals, gastropods (snails), and cephalopods (squid-like creatures).

The darker coloured branch-like structures in Tyndall stone are another type of fossil called ichnofossils (ickno-fossils) or trace fossils. Ichnologists (geologists who study trace fossils) theorize that the branching pattern represents tunnels and burrows. These borrows would have been made by tiny organisms living within the ancient marine sediments, similar to how earthworms churn up soil today. The

Different types of coral are easy to spot in the limestone as they exhibit

mottling is a fossil ‘trace’ of ancient organisms’ movements – not of the organism itself. The darker colour of the branchy mottles and the subtly sparkling texture of Tyndall stone can be attributed to a geologic process called dolomitization. Long after the ancient sea had receded and the marine sediments began to lithify (harden into rock), magnesium-rich fluids penetrated the limestone, causing a chemical reaction whereby portions of the limestone were changed into another carbonate rock called dolomite. Dolomitization often recrystallizes the limestone– meaning that very fine limestone crystals become larger, coarser, and sometimes darker crystals. These dolomite crystals and the calcite crystals contained within the limestone give off the sparkling effect we see in Tyndall stone. Today, Tyndall stone is quarried at one, and only one, location in North America. Gillis Quarries Limited is the sole-supplier of Tyndall stone to all of North America, and it is located just northeast of Winnipeg at Garson, Manitoba. Four generations of the Gillis family have operated the quarry for over 95 years. I recently visited the quarry and felt like a kid in a candy store. I was gifted with two samples of Tyndall stone containing incredible fossil specimens, and as a geologist, I cannot express how much that meant to me. Rocks like this are a rare find. The same Ordovician-aged rock formation that hosts Tyndall stone, called the Red River Group of sediments, exists in Saskatchewan. The difference is that in Saskatchewan, the Tyndall stone layer is located over 1000 metres below our feet. It is buried deeper than our oil and potash deposits, thus quarrying it is not an option. Perhaps in a few hundred million years or so, enough time will have passed for the thick layer cake of sediment deposits in Saskatchewan to erode away, finally exposing our sparkling fossil-rich Tyndall stone rock to the world. Until then, we must consider ourselves fortunate to be neighbours with the province that has unearthed a great geologic treasure for the entire world to enjoy. We must also consider ourselves fortunate that Premier Scott had the good judgement to decide against cladding the Legislative Building entirely in red brick, as the original plan called for. He developed the building with visions of grandeur and glory for Saskatchewan’s future and, perhaps unknowingly, paid homage to Saskatchewan’s grand geologic past. FHS

GINGER: AN ANCIENT HEALER By Ken Beattie

G

GOLDILOCKS D WEATHER AN OUR SUMMER GARDENS

inger—yes, as in gingerbread—has a long-standing medicinal as well as horticultural reputation. I mention gingerbread for the simple fact that over the festive season, this edible creation ranks in its own food group at our house. Oddly enough, gingerbread has its origins in ancient attie Greek BY times and not in Asia, as I had thought. Ken Be Apparently, ginger root was peeled and wrapped in a piece of bread, and eaten after a heavy meal to prevent indigestion, hence gingerbread. Perhaps this root’s ability to settle tummies was the reason that ginger ale was often used as a home remedy for rumbling tummies and overeating. Native to India, the ginger plant has been used as a physical cleanser as well as a spiritual purifier and food preservative by the Ayurvedics. In some religious festivals, the ever-sopopular garlic was shunned and replaced with ginger so as to afford a pleasant, sweet aroma on the person before the gods. Ginger has very warming and drying qualities, and is actually a stimulant. Many cough

remedies will contain ginger or ginger parts mostly for its expectorant quality—a great value to enjoy especially at this time of the year. There is some evidence that ginger has a mild anti-depressant quality, yet another positive vote for gingerbread. One of the best known uses for this seeming panacea is to quell nausea and vertigo associated with motion sickness: air, sea or on land. If you are prone to these ailments and have been putting off a cruise or extended air travel, ingesting powdered ginger in a gel capsule works well before travelling. Some folks will dab a little ginger oil behind their ear prior to travel with apparently good success. From a decorative perspective, ginger is a remarkable plant both in form and flower, and is simple to grow. During the lower light periods that we experience in the winter, ginger can be started indoors from a root purchased at the local green grocer or supermarket. Check carefully to determine if any growth is apparent at the tip of the lumpy roots. An organic produce store may be your best bet because most ginger root is irradiated to prevent growth. You will notice that these rhizomes have what appear to be “fingers” or digits protruding from the main bulk of the root. Fear not:; if you should break one or more of these away from the main member, they too will grow into ginger plants. When you are ready to plant the rhizome, lay it flat on the surface of a soiless medium, like ProMix™, press firmly to ensure that the root is about 50 per cent into the mix, much like an Iris rhizome would be planted, and then water. Next, you might tent the entire container with a clear, plastic bag. This quasi-greenhouse will keep the humidity and temperature at a decent rate while the ginger sets its roots. Under cover, the container is not likely to need water for some time, unless you notice that the mix is dry. You should see green shoots at the very ends of the ginger rhizome appearing cylindrical and almost grass-like. At this point, it is wise to either remove the plastic tent, or vent it to allow fresh air to circulate. From this point on, your new ginger plant will surprise you with a rapid rate of growth. During the winter months, ginger, like many other houseplants, will amble along with no spectacular production of leaves, and not likely any flowers until conditions improve. Ginger started from

scratch may indeed not bloom until the following year, even under excellent conditions. All the same, this is a very easy and remarkable plant to grow. When crushed, the leaves give off a strong ginger scent; for this reason alone, the plant is worth growing. Flowers are typically borne on a spike and are heavily scented, and the individual flowers of the edible ginger are white or perhaps a pale pink. There are many cultivated varieties that come in other colours and a myriad of very interesting floral forms.

Gingers make a bold statement in the summer garden: tall and stately resembling corn in some cases, and well worth the minimal effort. Children will likely find this a cool situation as well, and may consider growing ginger as a school project. Water is the best food for ginger, however, it does respond rather rapidly to a healthy nitrogen fix. Enjoy the winter season, and start early for next year’s garden. FHS

EXPERTAdvice A Garden for All Seasons

Janet Wanner Gentle Earth Design Studio Ltd. 306.343.8594 gentleearthdesigns@shaw.ca gentleearthdesigns.com

S

askatchewan has four distinct seasons and our gardens follow with their own show for each. Designing a garden that reflects each season can be challenging, but very satisfying. We can have beauty surrounding us from the freshness of spring bloom to the white of winter. The basis of a good design in any garden is its structure; the good bones of a garden are the background and permanent “walls” that define the space. Tall, waving trees provide shade and height to the space; a place for our children to play and adults to relax in a

70

FineHomes

SASKATOON

chair. A couple of well chosen trees can add colour in spring and fall with bloom and brilliant yellows and oranges to round out the greens of summer. Trees bring in wildlife, vital to the health of any garden. What would we do without the song of birds in the spring or the bees that pollinate the apples on our tree? A good tree in the corner of the yard adds privacy and mediates pollution. The second layer of design in a garden are evergreens and shrubs. Evergreens are with us through the good times of summer as well as the cold days of winter. Their branches hold snow artfully, adding greens, yellows and even blues to our winter landscape. Evergreen trees shelter our winter birds and other wildlife. Their structure and needles are so different from the deciduous plant leaves; they add a visual contrast to the picture. What would our Forestry Farm Park be without those stalwart evergreens defining the perimeters of the lawns in summer and holding Christmas lights in winter? With each year, there are new and hardy introductions at the nurseries that fill the bill for each space. The new narrow columnar Colorado Spruce allows even the smallest yard to have a blue

evergreen. A columnar decorative apple named ‘Dreamweaver’ spire becomes a flowering screen and the ‘Little Devil’ ninebark takes over to the much larger ‘Diablo’ ninebark; less pruning and wonderful colour and leaf shape. The flowering perennials and annuals become the icing on the cake. The garden becomes individual with the addition of flowers. It may be that the memory of your grandmother’s garden has you wanting lilies and delphiniums or scented hardy roses. The prairie grasses and coneflower are just right for a garden in the prairies, with ‘Karl Foerster’ grass. These same structural plants can be planted for a very modern look that is easy to care for and striking. A wildflower garden is a mix of seasonal favorites. All you have to do is pick some and add a water. It could be a birdbath or a pond. I am often asked if we can design for our Saskatoon climate and give thought to each season. Yes we can. If you need help with your garden design and with creating an oasis around your house, our designs are individual and just what you need. FHS

ocally owned and operated by Mark Pfeifer and Mike Scarfe, Brothers in Grime (BIG) has recently attended to several mould problems in Saskatoon. Luckily, you can combat mould, but sometimes it is an invisible issue. Despite the lack of smell or its illusiveness, it can still be present. If ignored, mould can have a serious effect on your home and your health. Even though some places are more prone to mould development than others, the reality is it can grow anywhere moisture and organic material are present. Trying to fix the mould problem with over

the counter disinfectants can often worsen it. The first step towards clean-up is to schedule an inspection. If mould is present, the professional and certified microbial remediation technicians from Brothers in Grime can then go in and remove the mould from where it starts. BIG is renowned for the high-end service they provide to the people of Saskatoon. More responsive and faster than many of their competitors, BIG can help with any of your home cleaning and restoration troubles,

Selecting the correct Furnace For Your home By Shell BuSey

U

pgrading your heating system is a great way to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Selecting the right home heating system can be a confusing and overwhelming task. Efficiencies, features and price are all factors, but in the end it’s a long term investment, and you want quality equipment you can rely on. Today’s natural gas furnaces are up to 97 per cent efficient, which means that 97 cents of every dollar you spend on energy is used for heat. The older, standard-efficiency furnaces were only 60 to 70 per cent efficient.

72

FineHomes

SASKATOON

The best high-efficiency models are 90 per cent efficient or greater, will have two heat exchangers, use outside air for combustion, and can be vented through an exterior wall. With a high-efficiency furnace, the higher your current energy bill, the greater your potential savings in energy and costs will be. While the brands are comparable, when shopping for a major item like a new furnace, it’s very important to use a technician who is familiar with the product and able to perform warranty work should the need ever arise. The following is a list of important questions to ask when you are shopping for a furnace.

Some questions to ask when considering a furnace upgrade. • • • • • • • • • • •

What type of furnace do I need? How many BTUs? What efficiency should I have? Is the duct (supply and return) adequate? Should I have more supply air, and what about a basement return air? Does my venting have to be changed for the new furnace? Is the hot water tank venting proper size and gauge? Are there advantages to a continuous low speed fan? Will my old thermostat work with a new furnace? How often should I change or clean the furnace filter? What can I do as a homeowner to keep my furnace running at the highest efficiency possible?

Installing a New Furnace Condensation issues can arise when upgrading to a high-efficiency furnace. Changing one item can cause issues elsewhere if your home’s ventilation is not adjusted, resulting in excess moisture and condensation problems as seen on your windows. Always think of your house as a system, keeping in mind that one reason you’re seeing these changes in your home after your upgrades is your new high-efficient

heating system operates differently than your old furnace. For example, your old furnace would draw air from inside the home for combustion, but the new highefficient units have their own supply line that go into the combustion chamber, and are exhausted outside through their own plastic vent pipe. Exhaust ventilation has to be provided to accommodate increased relative humidity in the home; otherwise high humidity may be the outcome.

Choose the Right Size of Air Conditioner, Furnace, Heat Pump or Boiler to Fit Your Home In addition to the savings on your gas bill, you may be eligible for a rebate through the Saskatchewan EnerGuide for Houses Program. When considering adding or replacing air conditioning or heating to your home, insist that the installing contractor “sizes” the system properly. A qualified contractor will not recommend equipment size based solely on the size of your home, or assume that your existing equipment was sized properly in the first place. Be sure to also tell your contractor if you plan to renovate in the near future. Changing windows, upgrading insulation levels, finishing the basement, air-sealing or a new addition will impact the sizing calculation for any new system.

To complete the design load calculation, the contractor will need to take measurements during the initial visit to your home and ask some questions. They also take into account: • Local climate conditions • Size and number of windows that let in heat from the sun • Existing insulation levels of the home • Number and lifestyle of your home’s occupants • Predicted or known air exchange rate of home There is only one correct size of equipment for your home. Not only will a unit that is too big turn on and off more often, which is annoying, but over-sizing equipment can result in increased fuel consumption and higher operating costs. This is inefficient and can contribute to premature part failure, higher noise levels and reduced comfort due to hot or cold spots within the home. You need just the right size; under-sizing of equipment will also cause severe comfort problems. Ideally, the equipment should be designed within plus or minus 10 per cent of the required size. FHS

Warm Up YoUr Winter:

the ever-Charming FireplaCe By FHS STaFF

A

fireplace has irresistible charm: the warmth and beauty of the flames commands relaxation and coziness to a room.

They require a chimney or natural venting system.

owners of winterized properties enjoy the user-friendliness and cost-effectiveness of these units. Whether you are renovating or building new, the fireplace adds a unique element to your space. A source of warmth and ambience, fireplaces are more versatile than ever, and can be installed in any home. FHS

Gas fireplaces or stoves give the look of a natural wood fire without the mess: no ashes or wood chips to tend to. The heat emitted from gas is immediate, and the flame height and temperature can be controlled by a thermostat, making it very user-friendly. These versatile units lend nicely to the atmosphere of any home. Using propane or natural gas, gas fireplaces with direct venting systems are ideal for new installations. If you are updating your existing fireplace, and there is a chimney and flue present, a gas insert is a good retrofit. Like other types of stoves, a gas stove provides a traditional element to a room. They are ventless, smokeless, and fireless, making them versatile and usable almost anywhere. Electric fireplaces are portable and energyefficient, easily heating a room approximately 400 square feet. Electric inserts are an easy solution for upgrading older, inefficient fireplaces. Not only are they convenient, but these units enhance a room’s look through different styles that range from modern to traditional. Some models are designed to

hang on the wall, providing homeowners and guests a unique conversation starter. A pellet stove or insert produces minimal smoke, and creates less ash and creosote than regular wood fireplaces. The pellets are made from a variety of compressed recycled materials; the compression leaves very little moisture in the pellets and allows them to burn hotter than wood. As freestanding units, pellet stoves require venting, whereas pellet inserts can be installed in existing fireplaces with chimneys. Both require electricity to operate. If you want a real fire but don’t want the hassle of wood, you may want to consider a gel fireplace. These units burn an odourless and non-toxic jelled alcohol compound in a can. While you can’t control the size of flame, this is remedied by burning more than one can. This eco-friendly option is great for localized heating, and provides the same ambience one expects from a wood or gas fireplace. These units can be installed almost anywhere because they do not require special venting. For example, cottage

The type of fireplace you choose is directly linked to the venting system: Direct venting system. Uses a coaxial pipe system where outside air is drawn in for combustion, and a second pipe vents the air back outside. Because this system can be vented either horizontally or vertically, it is suitable for homes with no existing chimney. Natural venting system. Uses air from the room for combustion, then vents like a furnace at the roof. It is an economical system to install, but less efficient than direct venting. Ventless. Does not require a chimney or flue, making them versatile and usable for almost any room. Want to heat up the master suite? Warm up the kitchen? This type of fireplace is the perfect option.

The Value of Staging

BEFORE

Chantelle Butterfield Funktional Space 306.227.3008 chantelle@funktionalspace.com www.funktionalspace.com |

T

here is definite value in staging a home. For instance, with this beautifully constructed show home by Decora Homes in Rosewood (834 Gillies Crescent), we wanted to take the impersonal feel of a vacant space, and make it more inviting to viewers. Even when a house is finished with the highest quality features, empty spaces can leave viewers wondering how to make those areas their own. Rhonda Iula, owner of Decora Homes, says, “We stage houses so that when people walk in, they get a ‘homey’ feeling. It inspires them with ideas about how to place their own furniture. In our experience, a staged home sells faster because potential buyers are able to envision themselves living in that house.” Decorating and staging is done to honour the house. This one is a stunning organic contemporary space, and I wanted to make sure the look reflects a regal, yet funky

82

FineHomes

SASKATOON

style. “It’s so easy to work with Chantelle,” says Rhonda. “Our visions are on the same page, and the result is fantastic.” Playing off the layout, sight lines and vantage points, the goal is to have buyers ask themselves, “Is this worth taking my boots off for?” when they walk in the door. Staging defines the space and size of rooms more accurately than if they were left empty. A room can appear larger when furniture is arranged with best functionality. By closing off spaces or creating corners of interest, potential buyers are also better able to imagine their own possessions in the house. Staging also highlights the unique features of the property that might be overlooked if they are not accentuated. Most importantly, it keeps the buyer’s focus on buying a home, not a house.

We dress ourselves on a daily basis, but most of us don’t decorate every day. Approaching the best way to decorate your home as you would your own wardrobe to get the best use from it. When you have the basics that go with everything, you can change the look by adding and subtracting pieces that reflect a new style. This is my Chanel suit philosophy: by keeping the “bones” neutral, you can improve the look and feel of any space by using the little extras. It’s not just show homes that are accentuated with staging, but resale and life time homes too. People are starting to understand the value of decorating and staging when it comes to their home. If you are thinking of how to take your home to the next level, I would be happy to help. FHS
