I

took a tour of a friend’s garden recently. It was spectacular. Vegetables were bursting off each plant and my mouth watered at the thought of their taste. That’s one of my favourite things about this time of year: reaping the rewards of your hard work over the spring and summer months. What do you like best about autumn?

Local businessman Bob Behari designed the rural paradise featured in this issue’s cover story. 72 Rivers Edge Lane is a rare treasure: three acres of private, riverfront property plays host to the grand 4,400 sq. ft. architectural masterpiece. Take a preview of this stunning five-bedroom home (complete with a two-bedroom in-law suite) currently for sale. If you’re in the market for your own idyllic rural acreage, contact C21’s Barry Chilliak for your personal viewing. Have you been pondering new décor this season? We share some advice on selecting luxury accessories to create the perfect atmosphere in your home. Ken Beattie gives timely pointers on splitting your perennials to increase your garden size, and Scott McGillivray shares his input on selecting the best appliances for your home. From reviewing trendy staircases to luxurious stone floors, this issue of Fine Homes Saskatoon inspires the best for our home and our life.

all is just around the corner and if you haven’t tackled your spring cleaning yet it’s finally time to open the windows, shoo away the cobwebs and take on the annual spring/fall cleaning. Living in a cleaner home also means a healthier home — less dust, allergens, odours and dirt — which is better for everyone in your family. Here are a few helpful and effective tips which make seasonal cleaning more manageable and enjoyable. First things first: when taking on a big project, the best way to get started is to make a plan. Start by listing all the rooms in your home and what you plan to accomplish in each room. Think of areas you don’t normally get to wash such as baseboards, walls, door frames, casings and windows. If it helps, you can even walk through your home while making the list to ensure you aren’t forgetting anything. Create a realistic schedule and timeframe, keeping in mind a single weekend won’t suffice; you’ll need several days to get to the areas that are overlooked on a regular basis. Whether you prefer to go room by room or conquer one specific task (such as all the windows throughout the house), make sure you stay focused

on the particular room or task at hand to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Having the proper cleaning products makes cleaning a breeze. Fill a bucket or tray with the basics needed for cleaning throughout the house. Not having to backtrack each time you need a different cleaning product will save you tons of time in the end. There are a few basic cleaning products each household should have: glass cleaner, bathroom cleaner, different cleaning cloths for tasks in the kitchen, bathroom, dusting and floors (we prefer microfibre cleaning cloths), a toothbrush, a nonabrasive scrubber, a toilet brush and, of course, a good Hepa filter vacuum that can easily get under furniture. Some environmentally friendly cleaners we use include Basic H by Shaklee and Tub and Tile by Melaleuca. You’ve got a plan, you’ve budgeted your time, you have your supplies ready, and now it’s time to get started! If the thought of seasonal cleaning makes you want to pull your hair out even after reading these helpful hints, do yourself a favour and contact The Tidy Time Saver Professional Cleaning Company. We’ll take care of your cleaning needs and free up your evenings and weekends so you can do the things you really enjoy.

such as a dramatic fireplace or art, as well as consider where it is in the home. “A staircase’s position in the home will often dictate what type of structure is created. Bold sculptural elements tend to need more space,” says Douglas. Te c h n o l o g i c a l and material manufacturing advances have also had an impact on the humble staircase. “Many people are opting for the dynamic tension created by stair treads and rails that seem to float in a space,” says Douglas. “This look is often attained through the use of steel and glass.” Steel is being used more and more in staircase design because of its ability to provide strength while minimally imposing on a space. Steel can support in more thin dimensions than most materials, acting as the central spine of a staircase. Douglas himself has completed several projects where stair stringers seemingly float away from a wall or hover in mid-air with steel. Glass allows homeowners to have an open and airy feeling while still maintaining a safe environment. Handrails are a necessity for safety, but there is nothing saying they have to be heavy or obtrusive. Safety is always an important part of stair design regardless of the space. There are two different types of safety concerns with staircases, building codes and the personal feeling of safety. Many people love the look of an open stringer and riser-free staircases where the steps seem to hover in space, but the look can induce a certain amount of trepidation. Douglas notes this fear can be alleviated by creating a thicker tread thus reducing the gap.

T

he staircase has been built and reinterpreted for millennia. More than simply a way to move from one level to another, the residential staircase has embraced luxury and design like never before. Whether maximizing storage and functionality in a small space or providing a striking sculptural form, the modern staircase takes many shapes. “Over the last two decades, stairs have moved from being a functional element to

a freestanding sculptural feature. People see more value in staircases now; they no longer blend into the background,” says interior designer Jeffrey Douglas. Open concept living has moved staircases from the background of a space to the starring role in the home. Creating large open spaces means in most cases there is no wall for the stairs to hide behind. Douglas notes when creating a bold stairway it is important to support the structure with equally bold elements

HOMES & PROPERTIES

“Feeling safe is a very important part of feeling at home. Many people prefer carpeted stairs, but it is important to have similar textures on landings too, that shift underfoot can result in the slip factor,” says Douglas. There are usually concerns with homeowners about young children and stairs, but it is still possible to achieve a striking look while still embracing family life. Whether renovating or building a completely new home, there are a plethora of choices and stairs often get forgotten in the shuffle. The modern staircase is a unique combination of wood, metal and glass expressing a homeowner’s personal sense of style.

Additionally, they offer customer service that is second to none. We are proud to showcase BP Banister in our new homes.” Ron Rhode of Ridge Crest Developments says, “We have been working with BP Banister for many years. Bernie and his staff are great! Fresh Face, Fresh Approach Still in my first year as a REALTOR® and coming off a successful spring, the transition into the industry has been relatively smooth thanks to the almost 20 years I spent in Saskatoon’s advertising sales and marketing industry. As current president of Hollandia Soccer Club and committee member for both the Saskatoon Council on Aging’s Zoomer Idol 2015 and Spotlight on Seniors, I keep a finger on the pulse of Saskatoon and strive to continuously give back to my community. Raised in a family of volunteers with parents who were lifelong SaskTel Pioneers, it’s important to me to volunteer time each week and encourage my children to also donate their time within the community of Saskatoon. As I watched people in my parent’s generation begin downsizing and transition out of their life-long home to something smaller, I realized I could assist Saskatoon seniors in the process of leaving the home in which their family was raised. In early spring 2015 I furthered my REALTOR® knowledge and achieved the designation of Seniors Real Estate Specialist®, or SRES®, meaning I am specifically qualified to address the needs of home buyers and sellers over the age of 50.

Moving & Packing Tips

W

hether it’s your home and all your worldly goods, or something like a big piece of furniture from one end of town to the other, moving is stressful. There are so many things to remember to do, and the biggest of these is packing everything to be moved. Should you use boxes or plastic bins? What should go in each box? What do you do with the fragile stuff? How do you protect your furniture from damage? Packing is by far the biggest and most stressful part of moving. We’ve been moving people and their belongings for many years, and we’ve got some great advice. First, get rid of any items you don’t need before you move. There’s no point in moving things you’re not going to need at your new home. We’re always happy to help people get rid of things they don’t need and get the items donated or recycled. Once you’ve determined what’s making the move, then it’s time to pack.

When packing, don’t overfill your boxes. The biggest mistake we see is boxes filled so full they can’t be closed properly. Always make sure the contents fit in the box so it can be closed with tape. Open, overfilled boxes mean things get damaged. Also, make sure the box is appropriate for the contents. Heavy items should be placed in smaller boxes. Our rule of thumb is: if you can’t lift it, it’s too heavy. It’s always better to have more, lighter boxes than fewer, heavier boxes for safety reasons, and to prevent damage. Plastic bins may not always be

HOMES & PROPERTIES

a great choice for packing, depending on the contents. Fragile items should never go in a plastic bin. Plastic bins can bend easily and they should never be overfilled. They are best for lighter items, or for storage once you’ve moved. Fragile items should be wrapped well in paper or bubble wrap, and placed in smaller boxes to prevent breakage. As for electronics, be sure to box items like stereos and DVD players, because if left unboxed they can lose knobs or buttons during moving. TVs can be wrapped and slid between mattresses, along with mirrors and pictures. Lamps should have their shades removed and packed in a box. The lamp itself should be wrapped well, and boxed if possible. You can stack the shades lightly — never force them — to help save room, too. When moving furniture, you can wrap every piece in plastic if needed. Couches, chairs and love seats should have any removable cushions taken off before wrapping. As well, moving blankets are an excellent way to keep furniture protected during the move. With these few helpful tips, you can make sure your move is less stressful and your belongings are protected. Need It Moved? is Saskatoon’s moving experts, and we can make your moving experience a great one. Whether you need the white glove treatment with the full pack, move and unpack experience, or just a basic grab-and-go style move, we can help — call today!

How to Maximize Your Outdoor Space in Cooler Weather to go someplace else where you’ll be comfortable. No one wants to sit outside in their jacket and freeze. The addition of outdoor fireplaces and patio heaters gives you the opportunity to use your outdoor spaces earlier in the spring & later in the fall. What are the best grill options for people who want to grill year round?

John Christenson owner Bridlewood Home Products 2310 Hanselman Avenue Saskatoon 306.664.2122 johnc@bridlewoodhome.com www.bridlewoodhome.com

The Prestige Series Gas Grills by Napoleon are quite versatile. They have infrared rear and side burners and can be used for convection and charcoal cooking and even as a smoker grill. Cooking grids ensure even heating. These are designed for year-round usage. What makes Napoleon gas grills suitable for cold weather grilling?

I

f you live in Saskatchewan, you may think the end of summer means goodbye to time spent outdoors on your deck. But that doesn’t have to be the case. With the right heating device, you can extend the use of your outdoor space, grilling dinners with friends and family as the season changes. How far into fall do Saskatoon households typically use their decks? As it cools down in the evening there’s generally less and less usage. If you’re uncomfortable you’re going

18

FineHomes

SASKATOON

They’re commercial quality stainless grills with roll top lids lids that help retain the heat, so you have more temperature control. The stainless resists rust and corrosion damage. What heating options are available for outdoor spaces? Bridlewood carries three lines of patio heaters: IR Energy, Patio Plus and Napoleon. The most common option is the stand up patio heater with the dome on top. They are available in both fixed and portable so they can be moved around the deck or yard. Napoleon heaters are more decorative, with flames visible through the glass tube, but don’t

HOMES & PROPERTIES

provide as much heat. Another option is hanging patio heaters, which hang off the soffit or deck. Outdoor fireplaces are typically more decorative, but Valor has released a radiant heat outdoor fireplace that provides a lot of heat. We also have heaters suitable for three-season rooms including a free-standing natural gas radiant stove. Unlike much of what’s available in box stores, heaters from Bridlewood are serviceable, so if a new part is needed it can be replaced, rather than having to purchase a new heater. What about keeping warm inside? What should people do to ensure their gas fireplaces are working as well as possible? The batteries should be changed and glass cleaned annually. Bridlewood offers full servicing. If you want to take care of the glass cleaning yourself, use a cleaner similar to what you would use on a glass cook top stove. Smear it on and let it dry a little like you would with car polish, then buff it off. If you do this once a year, it will be easier to clean. If it’s getting sooty, it’s important to clean it more often so the sulphur doesn’t build up. With so many ways to keep warm, there is no reason to abandon your outdoor space as soon as temperatures start dropping. For many people, the deck is their favourite area of the home. Extending the time you spend using it is an investment into your happiness.

360-DEGREE PERSPECTIVE

from a

W

elcome to the next level of real estate marketing! I have at my fingertips a new technology my clients appreciate because of the extra value it adds to my real estate service: 3D camera technology. For sellers, this allows every potential buyer the chance to see your property like never before: without leaving the comfort of their home or office. The 3D technology allows the buyer to view your home just as they would walking through with an agent. Not only does this help protect your asking price, but it ensures you are meeting with serious buyers and, perhaps most importantly, your property stands apart from others on the market. If you are a buyer, 3D camera technology allows you to view every single square foot, from top to bottom, before ever doing a walk through with your agent. Zoom in and out, pan up and down, rotate ‌ Imagine: every single detail visible to the eye is visible from the comfort of your couch. As a buyer, you will be able to qualify the properties that interest you PRIOR to leaving your home or calling your agent. This saves time, ensures you are getting the most value the market can offer, and makes the overall experience less stressful and more enjoyable. This is not the next great thing coming in real estate: it’s already here. And I personally invite you to try it at my website: mysaskrealestate.com You will never see real estate the same again! ExpErt Advice Mattress Shopping Tips for Couples

WhaT kind of reSearCh Should We do before We buy?

Mark Stevens owner Wiseguys Mattresses 6-805 Circle Drive, Saskatoon 306.652.1212 mstevens67@msn.com

I

’ve said it before and I will say it again: a mattress is the single most important piece of furniture you will buy. You spend the most time on it, doing something that is so important to your overall health and well-being: sleeping. So it’s crucial that you get the right kind of mattress for you. But what about when you are shopping for two? When that purchase is a shared one, it takes even more consideration — and sometimes compromise — to make sure you’re getting the best for you and your mate. Here are some common questions couples ask about finding the right mattress.

32

FineHomes

SASKATOON

First, stay off the Internet. I know, it’s the go-to place for information, but when it comes to mattresses, what you’ll really find is a lot of misinformation. Manufacturer claims are made to sell you their product. Just because they say it’s the best, doesn’t make it so. And customer reviews are based on other people’s comfort needs and experiences. Be cautious about big sales too, because often a huge discount is just a sign that the mattress price was inflated in the first place. You have to try before you buy, and go for the most comfortable mattress you can afford. iS iT ok for uS To lie doWn on The MaTTreSS in The STore? Of course! Like I said, you have to try it out. Otherwise, how will you know if it’s comfortable? Lie down and put your feet up. Switch into the positions you usually sleep in. If you and your partner toss and turn, move around a little to see how the mattress responds. You’d never buy a TV without checking the picture quality, or purchase a car without taking it for a test drive, so don’t be shy to lie down and see how the mattress feels. Always make

BED & BATH

sure you have a 30- to 60-day sleep satisfaction on your purchase so you can exchange it if it’s not working out for both of you. My parTner and i have CoMpleTely differenT ideaS of CoMforT. WhaT Should We do? Like all things in relationships, it might take a little compromise, but most of the time it’s possible to find a mattress that works for both of you. If one, or both of you, has particular back or body problems, knowledgeable staff can usually help steer you towards something that might work well. But your comfort is always the most important factor. If there is no way the two of you can agree, it is possible to purchase two different twin extra-long mattresses, and put them on a king-sized frame. This is not usually necessary, but sometimes couples do have completely different ideas of what makes a good night’s sleep. There a lot of purchases any couple will make together, and buying a good quality, comfortable mattress that works for both of you should be one of them. And remember, just like a relationship, if you take care of it, it will last for many years to come.

Add Presence with Custom Drapery & Bedding

hoosing custom drapery and/or bedding allows you to establish a perfectly tiedtogether home. Sew & Home Furniture and Design is pleased to offer a full array of window treatments — including custom drapery — and the Hunter Douglas line of shades and blinds. We also provide custom bedding options to make your bedroom a place to truly enjoy. In our design studio you will discover hundreds of fabric options for any project you are working on. Custom drapery panels, window coverings and custom bedding can add great presence to any room. Sew & Home Furniture and Design has a seemingly

infinite selection of fabrics in varying textures and colours. How can fabric impact the feel of a room? Create an impact statement and completely alter the presence of a room using bold colours and patterns. Conversely, opt for softer, solid fabrics and blanket the room with a warm and inviting feeling. When planning your window coverings consider why you want or need them. What function will they serve? Do you desire privacy? Are you seeking to control the level of light in the room? Selecting a sheer product allows for more light, but offers little privacy. An opaque fabric or a window covering lined with blackout material provides plenty of privacy, but allows little to no natural light to enter the room. Drapery panels are available as either functioning (opening and closing) or nonfunctioning (stationary) — the latter being for a decorative effect. Functioning drapery requires more fabric in its production, therefore is a bit more of an investment. Regardless if they open and close or are for decorative effect only, drapery panels should be at least a double fullness to create a feeling of luxury in the room.

BED & BATH

We recommend your drapery go from floor to ceiling wherever possible. This makes your space seem grander. Of course, there are instances when objects in the room or obstacles will dictate something different. This is where the expertise comes in with the staff at Sew & Home Furniture and Design. Because of our knowledge in décor and design, we are able to offer unlimited options for the pleating or top treatment of your panels as they are all custom made for you. We also have an extensive list of hardware options and suppliers from which to choose. The Hunter Douglas product line is available through Sew & Home as an option or as a complement to your drapery. The endless possibilities allow you to create the space that is perfect for you and your family. Sew & Home Furniture and Design offers complimentary consultations for custom drapery and custom bedding inquiries. Any questions about Hunter Douglas products? Come in and talk to us. DREAM KITCHENS

DREAM Kitchen Cabinetry && Backsplashes By Tori Stafford

The kitchen is a bustling hub of people and meal preparations squeezed into busy schedules — but it can still be a beautiful space to enjoy.

C

reating a dream kitchen often means finding the perfect marriage of function and style. Two elements speak to this kitchen design balance: cabinetry and backsplashes. IT’S WHAT’S ON THE INSIDE THAT COUNTS When it comes to cabinetry, trends are leaning towards simple designs and appearances – but only on the outside, explains Fran Underwood, a Canadian interior designer. “For the cabinets themselves, there has been a complete shift over the years towards very plain and simple designs,” says Underwood. “Even in the hardware, people prefer finger pulls or grooves to handles and knobs.” The number of kitchen cabinets is decreasing, replaced by the favourable drawers that make accessing stored items faster and simpler, she says. “People want to be able to do the things they do in the kitchen as easily as possible,” Underwood says, noting that having appliances pre-wired is also a growing trend. “So something people like to do is have these items in place where they are

accessible, but also usable. You don’t have to get the appliance out, put it on your counter and plug it in; you just open a door or drawer, and there it is, ready to use!” she says. A BACKSPLASH OF COLOUR While neutral, natural, monochromatic and shades of white, black and grey seem to remain the favoured colour themes in kitchens, Underwood says she is starting to see pops and splashes of colour making their way back into the most used room in the home. “I just did a kitchen where the cabinets were all a dark grey, sort of like a weathered wood colour, and the countertop was white granite… and I did the walls orange!” she says excitedly. “The client loved it.”

streamlined kitchen design, suggests Underwood, is to have tiles placed in a straight lay as opposed to a brick lay. “People seem to always think tile needs to be laid in a brick lay pattern, but it doesn’t,” she says. “Often when I show someone straight lay tiles, they really love it, and they much prefer it…with tile, and especially mosaic tile, it’s just too busy.” With today’s user-friendly, efficient and fashionable cabinetry and backsplashes, you have all the ingredients for a dream kitchen. All you need to add is imagination.

Backsplashes have gained a lot of attention over the past decade, with seemingly endless styles and types of glass, stone and ceramic tile. While neutral colours and tones remain quite popular, many are starting to find the multi-tone or patterned mosaic styles too fussy in appearance, Underwood says. Today’s kitchens are all about clean lines and simplicity, and clients tend to favour grey-scale or natural colours and shades. A nice way to create a continuity of the

Stone By Henny Buffinga  Photos ANN SACKS

voking memories of rustic English farmhouse kitchens, stone tile has come a long way. In a time when so many flooring materials do their best to imitate natural products, there’s something luxurious about having the real thing. One of the most popular choices in stone flooring is limestone, whose characteristic colours include neutrals such as off-white, beige, tan, taupe and a light blue/grey. While it is a durable stone, it is relatively soft and can be susceptible to staining. A heavy-duty sealant can fix

38

FineHomes

SASKATOON

The Next Natural Step in Luxury Flooring

those problems, however, it will need to be reapplied every few years. For a traditional and elegant look, marble is a great choice. What was once the choice of kings is much more accessible today, giving an old-world elegance to the home. Marble is a metamorphosed limestone, which gives it a hard surface that can take a high polish. This glossy surface looks especially pristine in a kitchen or bath where the tile can be continued on the wall. Travertine is a luxury stone tile that, with the proper milling and sealing, can be

INNER BEAUTY & DESIGN

a gorgeous addition to any home. The characteristic colours of travertine are offwhite, beige, tan and yellow, and it makes a great choice for hallways, entrances and living spaces. Its matte finish provides a warm look and feels soft underfoot. Stone tile flooring works well in any season, whether you’re looking for the cool touch of stone in the summers or the luxury of heated tiles in the winter. Adding a touch of the old world and nature to your home, stone tile is a great investment.

Bring Warmth & Style Into Your House with Stone & Tile If you are looking for flooring that is more uniform, easy to maintain and cost effective, porcelain or ceramic tile are practical and long-lasting options. They come in countless colours, patterns and sizes, so there is something to complement every type of décor. Do all types of stone perform the same way?

Carl Carduner owner Prestige Flooring and Hardwood 2612 Jasper Ave Saskatoon 306.955.5033 prestigeflooring.ca

Each type of stone — slate, marble, granite, limestone, travertine and sandstone — has different characteristics and varying degrees of durability. Granite and slate, for example, are much harder than marble and limestone. If you are considering stone flooring, find a reliable retailer to help you figure out the best fit for your space and lifestyle. Remember that all types need to be sealed, and that some materials may be prone to chipping along the edges and at the corners of the square. What different tile options are out there?

A

popular flooring material for centuries, stone brings timeless warmth into your home. It’s an eco-friendly choice and inherently durable; with the proper care and upkeep, stone flooring can last for generations. Stone is a natural material, so each piece is unique and can vary in pattern, colour and markings. This organic look makes it a great flooring choice if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind aesthetic.

There are two main types of tile: ceramic and porcelain. Ceramic tiles are a mixture of clays and minerals fired at high temperatures — the higher the temperature, the less porous the tile. The body of the tile, called the bisque, is generally a creamy or a reddish colour. Porcelain tile is generally fired at a higher temperature than ceramic tile and has a very compact dry-pressed bisque — almost all of its porosity is eliminated during the firing phase. Porcelain generally contains better quality and more refined raw materials.

INNER BEAUTY & DESIGN

If you are looking at porcelain tiles, keep in mind that some types of tile maintain their colour all the way through, while others feature colour on the surface only. Through-body porcelain tiles, for example, are made of one type of porcelain stoneware and the colour is the same throughout the tile. Regular glazed porcelain tiles, on the other hand, have a top layer with a colour or a pattern while the bisque is a beige colour. It’s important to remember that if this type of tile chips, the colour of the bisque will be more noticeable. Where can I use tile and stone in my home? Certain types of stone and tile can be used for a variety of applications, including interior and exterior flooring, showers, and backsplashes. Choosing the proper material and installing it properly is key to its longevity. Talk to your retailer about the best type of materials to use, and be sure to ask about the best types of grout and thinset and sealing for stain resistance. We can help Prestige Flooring stocks a large selection of stone and tile, and our team of dedicated professionals is committed to working with you to attain the best option for you and your space — from product selection to professional installation services, we’ll support you every step of the way.

F

inding the right accessories to complete your home and create the right atmosphere is an art. Peggy Reid and Ashley Bryant from Reid & Siemonsen Design Group have some decorating advice for incorporating luxury accessories into your home. “We are seeing a lot more colour coming into our designs this year,” says Peggy, the owner of Reid & Siemonsen. “For a long time it was neutral on neutral, but just like women’s fashion, home design has moved more towards bolder colours, which is exciting to design with.”

Great Room

The great room is the main focus for decorating enthusiasts, as it tends to be one of the most popular spaces for families to gather. Peggy recommends choosing an exciting fabric as a jumpingoff point. By finding a fabric you love, you can begin to pull colour and pattern into your space. Mixing patterns can add a lot of interest in the room as long as you remember to have a variety of

scale, texture and prints, while keeping consistency with colour. Keeping larger pieces of upholstered furniture neutral allows you more flexibility for art and accessories. A simple way to update your room is by changing light fixtures or drapery hardware to warmer metal colours such as gold or brass. This can go a long way toward staying on trend. “Everything was stainless or chrome for a long time, but things are moving towards warmer tones now,” Peggy explains.

Dining Room

Creating a fabulous tablescape can add fun and interest for entertaining guests. A bright floral arrangement can set the tone for the room for each season. White or neutral coloured plate sets will also be advantageous for these seasonal place settings and allow you to change napkins, candles and other accessories easily. The dining room is also an ideal space to have a more daring paint colour or interesting wallpaper. Glamorous drapes can also add a dramatic element to the room. Choosing the right chandelier enhances the room and is often the focal point and can create some sparkle to the space.

Master Bedroom

Similar to the great room, this is a wonderful room to experiment with fabrics and use different textures. “A lot of men don’t like having too many decorative pillows on the bed,” Peggy laughs. “But it does look glamorous and romantic to have a variety of colours and layers. The bedding itself can be fairly neutral, but adding pillows with fabrics such as silks and velvets will provide a luxurious feel to your space.”

Kitchen

A great way to add colour, pattern and texture to the kitchen is through an interesting backsplash, which can be a combination of metal, glass or stone. If you have an island or bar, you can have a lot of fun adding different fabrics on the seats of the bar stools. ave you purchased a new home? Is it time to update your existing home’s design and appearance to accommodate a change in taste, budget or circumstance? There are many things to consider when designing and decorating a space: colour, texture, shape, function, flow and cost. consultant such as Michelle Rowlett of Interior Design Solutions in Saskatoon. Rowlett believes she was bitten by the design bug at birth. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve done design. I love it!” she laughs. “As a child of five, I would cut items out of catalogues and magazines and glue them into rooms I drew. When I was 11, my parents indulged me by allowing me to completely re-do my bedroom. In high school, I studied drafting.” By the time Rowlett graduated,

there was no doubt in her mind what career she would pursue. “I moved to Edmonton to study at a design school,” Rowlett explains. “Afterwards, I returned back home to Saskatoon to pursue my passion.” For over 20 years, Rowlett has worked in the field of interior design and decorating in various capacities, from custom designing furniture to creating fashionable yet functional homes and offices. of experience, a wide range of expertise and an incredible network of connections, making her an exceptionally valuable resource. Today, as the owner of Interior Design Solutions, Rowlett helps people with all their residential and commercial decorating needs. “I can do anything from helping you to pick out the perfect paint colour to advising you on exterior aesthetics to improving your home’s curb appeal to outfitting your entire home or office,” says Rowlett. “Some people worry that hiring someone to help decorate their home is going to be costly but, in reality, it often saves you money. As a design consultant, I recognize problems before they occur.” It is always better to seek help with a design project sooner rather than later. Selecting and purchasing items takes time and often needs to be coordinated with the work of various tradespeople.

Not being prepared can result in costly delays while quick, spur-of-themoment decisions often need to be changed, resulting in additional expense. “Designing a room, home or office takes time,” says Rowlett. “I help my clients develop a plan and set a schedule that is realistic.” When it comes to designing and decorating, Rowlett is not a slave to trends, but is guided by her clients’ lifestyle and needs. “I love fabrics, how the colours and textures go together to create various looks,” explains Rowlett. “I am also inspired by my travels — by the cultures and places I visit. However, I am very open to suggestions and am a great mediator when partners have differing ideas on what to do.”

ppliances can make or break the look of a room. Replacing ’70s appliances with shiny, stainless steel models can bring a kitchen into the 21st century more effectively than any other upgrade. Go Pro Just because you’re not a professional chef doesn’t mean your kitchen shouldn’t be professional grade. Lines like the new Frigidaire professional suite come in standard sizes (minimizing or even eliminating the amount of renovations needed to install them) and are priced so the average homeowner can afford them. The great part about the aesthetic of professional style appliances? They have a truly classic look that can seamlessly fit into any kitchen style.

Do sweat the smaLL stuff There are many small details that can slip your mind, or you don’t even think of in the first place. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen fridge doors that can’t open wide enough to even pull out the drawers properly because there’s a wall in the way. Double door (or french door) fridges require even more space, so keep that in mind. Other things like counter height and depth need to be considered (especially for dishwashers), as well as counter allowance for slide-in ranges.

Last But Not Least Jumping the gun on appliance purchases can cost you in the long run if you haven’t properly planned the space. Make sure you extensively plan the layout of your kitchen. If an 18-inch dishwasher just won’t cut it, make sure you delegate space for a full 24-inch model. Don’t get stuck with appliances you don’t like just because you didn’t plan properly.

It’s easy BeING GreeN Old appliances have a financial and environmental cost. A new, energy efficient fridge can save you up to $200 a year, meaning you recoup the purchase price in a couple years. ENERGY STAR compliant dishwashers not only use 50 to 75 per cent less energy than older models, but also much less water – as little as three gallons for a full cycle. If three gallons sounds like a lot, keep in mind you can use almost 10 times that by washing dishes by hand. Front load washers can cost as little as $20/year to operate, and since 90 per cent of the energy used to wash clothes is spent

DoN’t Let the eLectrIc sLIDe Appliances eat up a lot of the electrical bandwidth in your home. Laundry and kitchen appliances alone can take up a big portion of your panel, and when you add in things like air conditioning, it can get tight. This is especially true if you have an income suite in your home, which means two kitchens and often two washers and dryers. We recently shot an episode of Income Property where the homeowners ended up having to upgrade their electrical panel to accommodate the addition of a dishwasher and upstairs laundry. This was above and beyond what they had planned to spend because it never occurred to them that their current electrical panel wasn’t sufficient. If you have a newer home, chances are this won’t be an issue. However if you’re buying an older home (like many in the core areas of most major cities), it’s something you may need to consider. Choosing a Reputable Contractor for Your Stucco Exterior

T

he sophisticated finish of a stucco exterior can add character and curb appeal to any home or building. When done correctly, it can also provide a great barrier against the elements and protect one of your biggest investments— your home. However, if shortcuts are taken, homeowners will surely end up dealing with problems such as flaking stucco, rotten sheeting and boards, mouldy insulation and rotten drywall.

Robert Mellau owner AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. 502C – 47th Street East Saskatoon 306.382.0818 306.270.5006 al-ro@shaw.ca www.al-ro.ca

Visit them on Facebook to see their latest work.

Homeowners must be aware that a lower quote on a stucco project does not necessarily mean a cost savings. They may save some money initially, but a few years down the road they will more than likely find themselves shelling out big bucks when the consequences of cornercutting become apparent. Saskatoon’s housing boom for the past several years now has attracted numerous fly-by-night contractors who are often inexperienced, poorly trained or not trained at all, switching overnight from careers as bookkeepers, musicians, cell phone salespeople and so on. They’re here to make a quick buck and are gone by the time the results of their shoddy workmanship become known, leaving new homeowners with no recourse other than to hire a different company to do costly repairs or replacements. Another concern in Saskatoon is the contractor who has been doing things

52

FineHomes

SASKATOON

HOME IMPROVEMENTS & RENOVATIONS

exactly the same way for 30 years or more. Today’s building envelopes have tighter windows and doors and, highefficient furnaces that have to comply with the latest requirements of the Energy Guide and National Building Code. They function differently than older homes and this must be taken into consideration. Many of these contractors are not even meeting the minimum requirements of the National Building Code, which should be exceeded to provide longevity, durability, energy efficiency, increased value and overall peace of mind for the entire lifespan of the building. In contrast, AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. has been operating for 11 years in Saskatoon and the surrounding area and has completed more than 600 successful building projects. In Saskatchewan, there are only two Quality Assurance Program (QAP) Level 4 Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) mechanics certified by the EIFS Council of Canada and they are both employed by AL-RO, the provinces only QAP certified EIFS Applicator Company. AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. has been doing an increasing number of repair jobs for people whose stucco is cracking and chipping and who have mould or fungus growing on the wooden framing of their home, due to moisture damage issues caused by poorly applied stucco or EIFS. In fact, repairing the work of other contractors makes up approximately 60 per cent of their workload.

The company renovates all aspects of exteriors. That includes tearing down existing cladding, replacing windows and doors, replacing window and doorjambs, replacing trims and drywall, painting and more. They employ fully qualified painters, framers, plumbers, masons, stucco applicators and soffit and fascia specialists and are prepared to deal with everything they may find revealed within the building envelope. To avoid the worst-case scenarios, I recommend homeowners ask contractors many questions before they get started. Request a list of 15 to 20 references with addresses, names and phone numbers. You don’t have to call everyone on the list, but randomly pick four or five of these. Chat about the homeowner’s experience dealing with the contractor and how they handled unforeseen issues—because every construction job has unforeseen issues. While it’s easy for your potential contractor to write a two-line quote, you should insist that it be extremely detailed, outlining what is going to be taken care of step-by-step. The quote should even include full specs with shop drawings of how the new cladding will be installed. Many contractors intentionally leave items out of the initial quote for the purpose of maintaining a low price, only to add them later once the project starts. If many aspects of the job are not included in the quote, the homeowner may end up paying more than they would have to a reputable contractor.

Those are fundamentals of the job that many contractors in the area are not doing. This leads to leaking windows, mould buildup and rot that will compromise your home’s structural integrity as well as the health of your family. At the moment, AL-RO Acrylic Stucco Ltd. is completely renovating the exterior stucco on a four-year old condominium building. The disastrous work done by the first contractor is documented by the company and a lawsuit has been filed by the owners against both the developer and the original contractor. Several of the condominium owners are being forced to sell their units as they can’t afford the additional costs. The problem is a lot of people saw doing exterior stucco as a lucrative business and decided to get on board, even though they have very limited knowledge. Homeowners must ask questions and then demand to see the proof. Ask to see

HOME IMPROVEMENTS & RENOVATIONS

the homes these contractors say they did 30 years ago and ask to see their certificate of incorporation. That will tell the truth. I am always happy to provide potential clients with a lengthy list of references. My staff and I also take the time to explain their procedures and answer all your questions. Remember, anyone can make your home look nice on the outside, but it is what’s underneath the surface that ensures value and safety. Let AL-RO restore pride and joy in your home today.

Homeowner Pat Mailloux recently had his home's exterior renovated by Mellau's company and says, “Al-Ro Acryllic Stucco Ltd. by far and away exceeded all of our expectations and then some. Highly recommended company to do business with.”

GAIL VAZ-OXLADE on Living, Learning and Managing Your Money By Tonya Lambert

P

eople think it is all about the money with me,” says Gail Vaz-Oxlade, host of Til Debt Do Us Part and Princess. “But it isn’t. I have a regular house with melamine countertops and a regular fridge. I drive a Dodge Caravan and have a dog. My hobby is painting and I like gardening. Debt, however, is anathema to me. People need to know the details of money so it doesn’t become a problem.”

According to Vaz-Oxlade, the No. 1 reason people get into debt is they don’t pay attention; they have no idea what they’re spending. People rarely deal with physical money. “Money isn’t rocket science; it’s discipline,” says Vaz-Oxlade. Her vast reserve of financial knowledge, combined with an ability to explain seemingly complex matters in a very simple-to-understand way, made Vaz-Oxlade the perfect host for a program that taught couples how to manage their money so they could rid themselves of debt, restore their relationship and save for the future. Til Debt Do Us Part was a huge success, lasting nine seasons, and was followed by Princess and Money Moron. Today, Vaz-Oxlade no longer hosts television shows. Instead, this forward-looking woman has turned her love of learning to new pleasures and challenges. She blogs and has a radio program, The Late Shift. She also works with The Common Sense Divorce team to bring the same good sense to divorce that she did to money. “I enjoy trying new foods and travelling to new places,” says the Jamaican-born Vaz-Oxlade. “There is always something different to see. I am a firm believer that you should always keep learning new things.”

Why are solar-powered roof vents important to the home in summer?

It Feels Good to Vent: The EnergySolar-Powered Efficient Velux RoofTunnel Vents Sun

Keeping your attic cool and dry during the humid summer months can extend the life of your roof by protecting it against premature aging, rot and damaging shingle distortion caused by excessive heat. I installed a solar-powered roof vent into my own 1968 home that does not have air conditioning. In summer, if it was 28C outside, it was also 28C in the living room, even when all the windows were closed and drapes were drawn. Two days after installing the roof vent, we found the temperature of the house was 28C outside and 21C inside. It had dropped seven degrees just because the heat had somewhere to go. Is losing attic heat a problem in winter?

failing due to under ventilation. As a BP certified shingler, I’ve always been aware of the importance of attic ventilation. But the most significant benefit of attic ventilation is that it offers the roof and ceiling much needed protection against heat and moisture, helping preserve their structural integrity. How many solar-powered roof vents should my house have? One vent will service upwards of 1,000 sq. ft. of house. Who makes the solar-powered roof vents and do they have a warranty? I’ve partnered with a Mississauga-based company called Canada Go Green. Their vents come with a registration card. If you register, the motor and panels have a 10year warranty and panels are expected to last 20 years.

But the beauty of the Velux product is that their flashing is a onepiece, raised steel flashing can’t leak as long as it’s installed into the shingles properly. Velux stands above and beyond its competition because its sealed lens goes into the trim and ceiling. This means you don’t get warm air escaping from the bathroom, or any room, into the tube, which is where some other products have problems with condensation. We did a lot of research on Velux prior to partnering with them to make sure we were representing a quality product. I am confident we are as we are receiving calls to quote and install Velux products from across Western Canada.

Exterior Renovation Q&A

Colin Barre owner Barre Construction 306.260.4099 Saskatoon barreconstruction@shaw.ca

W

hat are you spending your renovation budget on this summer? Summer is a great time to replace old, inefficient windows, doors and siding. Let’s look at a few questions and concerns that arise when changing the exterior of your home. Q: I’m looking into getting new windows for my house this year. What should I be considering in terms of style and features for the frames? A: Vinyl window frames and jambs are going to give you the best bang for your buck. There aren’t a lot of colour options — white or beige are your choices — but they still look great and provide lasting durability with no maintenance.

If it’s a specific colour you’re after, opt for aluminum cladded frames with vinyl jambs. You can contrast or match colours with your exterior siding or stone, and remember there is no maintenance for years to come. For the classic wood look you want for your character home, manufacturers still make wood frame windows. These require a bit of maintenance over the years, such as painting and staining, but will achieve that elegant, traditional look that is complementary to older homes. If you are changing windows, think ahead and consider your exterior insulation. If you plan on installing new siding in the future and want to increase your insulation, you may need to build out your windows and order larger window jambs. Discuss this with your contractor. Q: Everyone is always talking about double pane or triple pane windows. What is the difference and is it worth the investment to go with triple pane? A: The biggest difference is insulation value (R-value). You will get better R-value in triple pane, saving you more money in the long run, but either option saves on your air conditioning and heating bill by reducing solar heat gain during the summer months and cold weather heat loss in the winter.

HOME IMPROVEMENTS & RENOVATIONS

Q: I’m looking at changing the exterior of my house this year. What are some things I should keep in mind? A: Before choosing an exterior product, you should be thinking about adding more R-value to your exterior walls. This will add to the cost of the renovation but is well worth it in the end as it saves you money in heating and cooling bills. Starting fresh with a new house wrap to keep the elements out is an important part of your house’s envelope. You should remove all the old products off your exterior, not just the siding, but the paper as well. When choosing your exterior product, consider the character of your home and the neighbourhood where you live. Vinyl is budget friendly, available in a variety of colours, and the look is clean and modern with no painting needed in the future. Cement board lasts longer than vinyl, is more of an investment, is available in an assortment of colours, and has a more substantial look. Stucco is your longest lasting option as it withstands the elements far better than vinyl or cement boards. Get the right contractor for the job and discuss all your options and expectations. They will help you choose the product that is right for your house and your budget.

DIVISION = MULTIPLICATION? Increasing Your Perennial Numbers By Ken A. Beattie, NPD, Ph.D.

New gardeners must find horticulture overwhelming, and the when and ifs of perennial plant division are no exception. A perennial is supposed to come back every year with an improved state of flowers and foliage, however, there are no guarantees.

T

he notion of division becoming multiplication is intriguing. Perennial plants that are divided actually produce more plants — multiplying, increasing or adding to your collection. These perennial pieces make excellent 58

the division at the same height as it was previously, and then water liberally again. At this point, there is no such thing as enough water. Hosta are shade lovers, so overexposure to sunlight is not an issue, but water regularly for the first couple of days and do not feed them. Newly established roots are tender and the chance of burning them off with synthetic feeds is high. Compost and or good wellrotted manure mixed in with the original soil is always a good idea. Lady’s mantle (Alchemilla) and arum root (Heuchera) are somewhat more demanding than hosta. The base structure of these plants has an almost rhizome-like basal stem system. Often times, these runners will have already started to root on their own, so only require a clipping and you have a new plant. These plants enjoy filtered to good light, so are best moved in the evening, giving them all night and the next morning to settle into their new homes. Follow the same procedure in preparation and soil amendment, consider covering the plants with shade cloth or light fabric until they have perked up. In the event there are no runners with roots, investigate closely and you will see natural formed crowns, or whorls of leaves; this is where you dig. Try to make your spade cut swift and deep, removing as much soil as you can with the new crown.

forms — one of the great unsung heroes of the Canadian garden! Some perennials, however, should never be offered for trade — at least to friends. Bishop’s goutweed, Lamium(s) and forget-me-nots rank high in the undesirable category. The moral is: be careful and be generous with the appropriate plant currency. Division itself is very simple and best undertaken in the early morning or dusk,

as harsh sun and heat are not favoured by newly divided plants. Hosta are easily divided with a very sharp spade that you slide down accurately between obvious growth terminals. Not to worry if you miss and cut off a few leaves; this happens and the plant regains composure in no time. The new home for the division should be prepared and waiting for the new transplant. Fill the hole with water, replant OUTDOOR LIVING & LANDSCAPES

Rhubarb doesn’t look at all good when it is divided, but it quickly gains strength and lives up to its robust reputation. These roots are very deep and quite large and carrot-like. It is likely you will break the root(s) off when dividing, so be prepared, but not disappointed. Preparation and soil amendment is the same as above, with liberal amounts of manure and compost to hold extra moisture. Some gardeners cut the large leaves in half or more to reduce transpiration, adding to an even more unhappy looking division. Oodles of water daily will see your rhubarb healthy and hearty in less than a week. PREVIOUS PAGE: Hosta TOP: Rubarb BOTTOM LEFT: Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla) BOTTOM RIGHT: Arum Root (Heuchera)

The Bridge on 20Th Coming Together as a City to Create Help, Hope & Healing By Tonya Lambert

I

t’s been nearly 18 years since Linda Chamagne hit rock bottom, struggling to cope with bipolar disorder, street drug addiction and feelings of anger and worthlessness. “I struggled with depression and the belief that as a Métis I could never be good enough,” she explains. “I made plans to commit suicide. [Fortunately], the Lord made a way for me and I invited Him into my life.” Profoundly affected by her experience, Chamagne felt a great desire to spread God’s message of love and healing. This included her dream of establishing a mission in her neighbourhood surrounding 20th Street. Chamagne had spent years unable to accept herself, rejecting the community to which she belonged. In March 1999, Chamagne and five others each contributed $20 to establish a centre where people are welcomed and accepted just as they are, a place where they can share beliefs and learn from one another. Known as The Bridge, the centre began as little more than an over-sized living room where people came together to tell their stories and gain inspiration from others. Initially staffed entirely by volunteers, today The Bridge employs 15 people and utilizes the services of many more helping hands and hearts to serve up to 200 people each day. “I volunteer at The Bridge because it’s more than people coming for soup or coffee. It’s about building relationships and valuing lives,” says volunteer Michael.

and other organizations and businesses. If you would like to contribute to the renovations or day-to-day financial needs of this faith-based charitable organization, call 306.382.2855 or email office@ thebridgesaskatoon.com or visit the website at www.thebridgesaskatoon.com. “There is a big need for our services,” explains Chamagne, “which makes our work both rewarding and disheartening. For me, being part of The Bridge is both an honour and privilege.” To contribute to the renovation of The Bridge’s new building or to the day-to-day financial needs of this organization, please call Linda Chamagne at 306.382.2855 or email office@thebridgesaskatoon.com.

The Bridge is transitioning to a new, improved location on 20th Street and Avenue J. “Years ago, we realized we needed to move to a bigger location,” explains Chamagne. “So, in February 2012, we started our capital campaign. In October 2014, we purchased a property and are slowly renovating it as funds become available.” Since May, The Bridge has been providing a safe place and limited services for those in the community in their interim location in the auditorium of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 919 20th Street. In the new facility, The Bridge, as a site of rescue and support, will provide a wide range of services to men, women and children. These range from serving meals and supplying showers and haircuts to addictions counselling and various other ministry programs. Donations of clothing, bedding, towels and toiletries are accepted and distributed in the Give-Away Room. “Our new location will enable us to expand our services to include instruction in meal preparation and nutrition and to open a woodworking shop and sewing and crafts room,” says Chamagne. “A not-for-profit store will sell the items made, providing vocational training.” The new facility will also serve as the infrastructure for The Bridge’s Transitional Program Housing which began two years ago and will be expanded in the future. To date, The Bridge has not received any government funding but relies on the generous financial donations and gifts-in-kind of individuals, churches

When you think of Oak wood products the idea of faded yellow lacquer and late 80’s styling probably pops into your head. But did you know Oak is one of the best woods you can have in your house! It’s one of the strongest woods, it stains incredibly well and it hides wear and tear better than other woods but most interestingly it actually looks like wood!

Oak, beautiful lines, beautiful grain, outstanding colour. It’s one of our favourites . Ask us about it when you are considering new builds or renovating your home.
