To the left are two practical storerooms, one containing the original transformer for the Francis Plume water turbine (installed in 1932). This system can still produce renewable energy today and together with a modern watersource heat pump, can provide up to 14 kilowatts of electricity per hour powering the house in winter and heating the swimming pool during the summer months. However, if you choose not to use alternative energy, that’s fine, we have a brand new oil boiler as your alternative.

The first floor of The Old Mill invited you into an impressive, open-plan living space that stretches the full width of the original build. A rotating Jøtul wood burner forms a contemporary centrepiece to this living space alongside large French Doors which lead out onto the private sun terrace with enviable views over the surrounding countryside and the gardens below. The kitchen, located at the front of the house, has been fitted with granite work surfaces and a central island, with a stable door opening to Mill Road. At the rear of The Old Mill, the millrace room offers the perfect spot to relax in, with natural light pouring in from both aspects and through the roof lantern above. Completing the first floor is the shower room that is situated just off of the kitchen.

The second floor features three spacious guest bedrooms. The principal guest bedroom enjoys a private roof terrace and ensuite as well as a cleverly designed dressing area.

The top floor is dedicated to two further ensuite bedrooms, both with high vaulted ceilings with beautiful exposed beams.

What is your favourite room of the house and why?

We love absolutely everything about the Mill, so to choose a favourite room is well nigh impossible.

We love the spacious New York loft effect lounge and the way in which the revolving fire, a cosy focal point during the winter months, draws everyone in.

A perfect place to enjoy pre dinner drinks with friends is in the fabulous Mill race room, which is above the water, offering views upstream and downstream, listening to Semington Brook wend its way to the Avon. The private courtyard garden packed with our favourite pot plants and trees, is a favourite p lace to relax and unwind with family and friends.

Who do you think would be the next ideal owner?

A large extended family who will enjoy using the swimming pool.

What do you love most about the house and why?

It is an imposing building with a fantastic 15 metre lounge and over four and a half thousand square feet which has offered a myriad of options. These have ranged from wedding receptions to cricket club parties, an art gallery, a pilates studio, art classes and yoga sessions. Someone even suggested a boutique hotel! Primarily the Mill is a cosy home that we have lived in for over 20 years and has helped us create some wonderful memories.

The Mill has presented us with endless possibilities including generating our own electricity. Our Francis Plume turbine is registered with OFGEM and set up to generate your own electricity which you may or may not decide to operate.

What do you love about the local community?

There is a huge cross-section of people living in Worton. Newcomers are made welcome. We have a popular primary School, an excellent garage ‘The Old Forge’ and a friendly pub ‘The Rose and Crown’. There’s a first-rate butcher and farm shop, as well as a pub, which serves delicious food just 2 miles away in Poulshot. There are many excellent dog walks on the doorstep, the nearest being just outside the front door along the Millrace to the ancient village of Marston which is m entioned in the Domesday Book.

How easy is it to commute from here?

The nearest railway station is 9 miles away in Westbury, we also frequently use Chippenham and Pewsey which gives us a huge choice of trains to visit our family in London, Plymouth and Bristol. When travelling by car we are equidistant between the M4, M5 and the A303.

What made you choose this property over others that were available at the time?

For years we drove past the imposing Mill wondering what it must be like on the inside. When it came up for sale, we arranged a viewing and put in an offer after 15 minutes. We could immediately see the versatility of the building and its endless possibilities. We loved the far-reaching views, the trees a nd the bird life.

Worton is located in the heart of Wiltshire, about 3 miles from the historic market town of Devizes. Devizes caters for most day-to-day requirements whilst the larger centres of Salisbury, Swindon, Bath and Newbury are all within easy motoring distance. The M4 to the north and the A303 to the south provide fast road access to London and the West Country; main-line rail services are available from Chippenham and Pewsey (Paddington just over an hour).

Education:

Worton is exceptionally well placed for families, with Worton & Marston Primary School in the village and a choice of other highly regarded primary schools in nearby Devizes, including Holy Trinity C of E Academy, Dauntsey Academy Primary and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary. For secondary options, Devizes School provides a popular secondary option with sixth form, while Lavington School is also close by. Independent education is well catered for too, with the renowned Dauntsey’s School just a few miles away, along with Stonar School and St Mary’s Calne offering excellent day and boarding opportunities.
