English summary

Premieres For once there are no English-spoken films on this month’s list of premieres, except (mostly) Beginners. In this exceptional situation we must refer our expat cinephiles to films that premiered last month and – hopefully for them – will be prolonged, such as Essential killing, The future, Eraserhead, Small town murder songs and Submarine. And another perfect option is offered by the reprise of one of our youth/family films: Skellig. Alternatively, expats can relish a new series of masterpieces from the Hollywood archives, due to start this autumn. Developed by Eye Film Institute (of the Filmmuseum) and Cineserver, the 2K digital format means you can enjoy these classic movies as for the first time. SKELLIG

1 to 30 October, on all Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm, and additionally during autumn break from Monday 15 to Friday 21 October daily at 3pm. The tagline for Skellig could well have been: ‘It’s all about the magic, stupid!’. For what starts off as a normal, realistic film seems to turn into a scary thriller, but then turns out to be a beautiful, magical tale. In the rickety shed behind their new house, 14-year-old Michael stumbles on a grubby tramp (Tim Roth) that has secretly made the shed his home. Later, he notices Skellig’s odd diet, consisting of flies and worms; and then there are the owls that bring him dead mice. Then he discovers that the hump on his back hides a pair of wings. Annabel Jankel / Great Britain 2009 102 ' 35mm English spoken, Dutch subtitles / from 8 years

Hollywood classics The programme kicks off on 20 October with a spanking new version of Raiders of the lost Ark. Next on 10 November, serving also as a teaser for our Nino Rota retrospective, we have The godfather by Francis Ford Coppola (USA 1972, with Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, 175 minutes). On 1 December it’s already the right time for the quintessential Christmas family film, The wizard of Oz by Victor Flemming (USA 1939, with Judy Garland, 101 '). This trend-setting adventure movie is the first of a series of four Indiana Jones films. To mark and honour its 30th anniversary, Raiders ‘I’ was fully restored. Crammed with impressive stunts in the most exotic of locations, ‘movie brats’ Steven Spielberg and George Lucas as producer made this film for 20 million dollars. Worldwide, the film went on to make twenty times that number! Harrison Ford – as third choice, after Tom Selleck and Nick Nolte declined the role for various reasons – turned out to be the perfect actor: he has since come to embody the archetypical scholarly adventurer. Out of 8 nominations, Raiders was awarded Oscars for the film editing, visual effects, sound effects, and art direction. Steven Spielberg / USA 1981 115 minutes digital 2K English spoken, Dutch subtitles

Silent movie & Live music This season brings a series of very special screenings. Following the homage to Ladislas Starewitch, we continue with the Icon Orchestra from the Czech Republic that is current touring four Dutch film theatres with Lotte Reiniger’s Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed.

THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED

Monday 24 October 7.30pm Riding a magical flying horse, Prince Achmed visits faraway lands and then, one day, falls in love with an imprisoned princess. Assisted by a benevolent witch, the prince fights to free her from a group of demons and a wicked sorcerer. To this classic animation film, the four members of Prague’s Icon Orchestra add enchanting music using unique instruments such as a brass synthesizer and a digitally amplified tree trunk. The ensemble was established in 2008 for the presentation in Paris of a classic Czech film, Erotikon by Gustav Machaty. The quartet has stayed intact since then, performing at original film and theatre shows. Lotte Reiniger / Germany 1923-1926 66 ' digital black&white tinted English title screens Accompanied by the Icon Orchestra: Jan Holecek (clarinet, bass-clarinet, brass synthesizer, microKorg synthesizer, tenor recorder), Tomás Zizka (tree trunk, mechanics), Dragan Stojcevski(accordion, kalimba) and Agnes Kutas (violin, voice).

Africa in the Picture Drawn from the festival of the bravely persevering Africa in the Picture, the Filmhuis offers the opportunity to sample four widely divergent productions. AFRIKAAPS

Thursday 13 October 7.30pm This documentary follows a group of musicians in search of the roots of one of South Africa’s languages, in the ‘hiphopera’ Afrikaaps. They show that Afrikaans is not only the language of the (former) oppressor, but that it also carries within it the history of slaves in the Kaap (Cape) area. It’s a difference of just one letter, but that’s enough for this latter-day street language to shake off the stigma that has burdened the language of Apartheid. Dylan Valley / South Africa 2010 52 ' digital Afrikaans and English spoken, English sub. BESOURO

Friday 14 October 7.30pm This is a historical drama about Besouro, the leader of a protest movement in the 1920s against the white landowners that treated their black labourers as if slavery had never been abolished. João Daniel Tikhomiroff / Brazil 2009 95 minutes 35mm Portuguese spoken, English subtitles INDOCHINE – SUR LES TRACES D’UNE MERE

Saturday 15 October 7.30pm Christophe never knew his mother. Now 58 years old, he sets off in search of his Vietnamese mother and his Benin father, a soldier for France in the Indochina war (1946–1954). Idrissou Mora-Kpai / Benin 2011 71 ' digital French, Vietnamese, Fon spoken, Engl. sub. GUN HILL ROAD

Sunday 15 October 5.00pm When Enrique is conditionally released from prison after three years, his world in the Bronx has changed. His wife Angela is struggling to deal with her emotions and his teenage son Michael is undergoing a sexual transformation that Enrique cannot understand. This is a film about ingrained notions of manliness. Rashaad Ernesto Green / USA 2011 With Esai Morales, Judy Reyes, Harmony Santana 88 minutes digital English spoken, no subtitles
