Get, Set, Celebrate! It’s December folks and T’is the season to be Jolly! The year has literally rushed by us and just like that we are in the last month of 2023. The month heralds happy tidings and adding to this celebratory mood is our very own celebration of UAE’s most empowering and inspiring women from all walks of life and their achievements with Flormar Presents Most Influential Women 2023. An evening of glitz, glam and power as we felicitate these trailblazing and trendsetting women achievers! Packing in a punch at the event and making it even more impactful is our December Cover Star Chitrangda Singh who will unveil this Power Issue at the mega-evening. The stunning Bollywood beauty - who has been an exemplary figure of grit and grace - entered the industry with a bang, and even as comparisons to the late Smita Patil took hold, the debutant made a quiet exit post just two films to go the family way. But six years later, her strong passion for cinema and love for the medium drew her back and the audience and industry accepted her with open arms. The actress who has always lived by her own terms continues to showcase her on-camera prowess and her most recent Gaslight is a testimony of her acting chops. In a candid conversation, we talked about her life choices, women empowerment and her plans of turning director with a short film that she has penned herself. Read our exclusive Cover Story in the pages ahead. Also the power-packed issue has our exclusive interview with the December Digital Cover Star Bobby Deol who is all the rage with his latest Animal. Shining in his hell-raising avatar on screen, the star talks about reigning hearts and reclaiming his throne! We also spoke to the other power-brand and super-performer co-star Ranbir Kapoor about what are touted to be their careers’ finest yet and the two reveal that Animal is not for the light-hearted. A statement backed by the film’s ace producer Bhushan Kumar. I’d met the trio here in Dubai ahead of the film’s release and the T-Series head honcho’s music acumen proved to hit bullseye once again as the film’s music has gained iconic status already and the film has set the cash registers ringing crossing 700 crore at the Box Office at the time of our going to print. 2023 has been a year-long celebration for the movies and cinema-lovers across. Bollywood had some of its biggest hits in Gadar 2, Pathaan, Jawan, Tiger 3 and now Animal is joining the ranks! It’s no different on the OTT that has seen a volley of strong and commendable content jostling for the top spots. Filmfare’s home team headed by the soft-spoken, but rock-solid Jitesh Pillaai successfully hosted their OTT Awards in Mumbai and it was a celebration of pure talent. More about that in the next issue. Meanwhile, in the pages ahead I have hand-picked my own favourite Top 10 Web-Series of the Year. Also check out our Newsmakers of 2023 to know about the biggest names and events rocking tinsel-town including the wonder-man Orry! Then there are our exclusive interviews with the all-time and all-screen beloved, and my personal favourites too, Manoj Bajpayee, Shefali Shah, Vikrant Massey, the brilliant director R Balki and the music maverick Amit Trivedi. So sit back, enjoy the festivities and flip on the pages for your dose of entertainment.

Peel off your skin problems easily! Since the advent of the chemical peel treatment, issues of skin like fine lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, acne and scars stopped falling into the category of problems that cannot be treated. Scars caused by such things can no longer ruin your impression if you allow yourself to undergo proper treatment. WHAT DO CHEMICAL PEELS DO? The skin gets resurfaced by chemical peeling as it removes the superficial layer of skin, making it smooth, vibrant and beautiful. After the removal of the top layer, growth of a new one is promoted which helps in the improvement of skin thwarting problems like hyperpigmentation, fine lines, dark spots, wrinkles, uneven texture and skin impurities. HOW TO FIND OUT ABOUT WHICH ONE HAS TO BE CONSIDERED? Peels are sort of panacea for all skin related issues and all of the skin types are responsive to peels. But, it is always advisable to get a consultation from your doctor before treatment WHAT IS THE POST TREATMENT CARE? Since, your new skin is exposed to the environment after you undergo peels treatment, you should abstain from using any type of anti-viral or antibiotics and topical skincare products. DOES IT HURT TO UNDERGO A CHEMICAL PEEL TREATMENT? It does not hurt that much. Although, a little bit of warmth or slight stinging is felt after peels are applied which usually go away after 10-15 minutes. CAN SKIN BE REJUVENATED WITH CHEMICAL PEELS AFTER IT IS PERFORMED ON OTHER AREAS OF THE BODY? Definitely, it can work on any area having acne breakouts, scars, hyperpigmentation and other skin concerns.

Ask for your consultation now!

hitrangda Singh made a rather iconic debut with her power-packed performance in Sudhir Mishra’s Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi. Her performance and an uncanny resemblance to one of the finest actresses of Indian cinema, the late Smita Patil had the industry talking about her being the next big thing and the ‘thinking man’s heroine’ when barely two films later she abruptly left Bollywood for personal reasons. But a passion for cinema and the fact that scripts never stopped coming her way made the actress return to acting after almost 6 years. But while there was no flood of scripts on her return, the break had neither dented her popularity nor was there a scarcity of film offers and the actress came back with a bang in a hotter avatar too. From Desi Boyz, I, Me Aur Main, Yeh Saali Zindagi to the more recent Bob Biswas, Modern Love Mumbai and Gaslight, the actress has earned her spot amongst the top. In a candid chat with the stunning star, we talked about all this and more. In this exclusive interview she also reveals her plans of directing her first short film soon. Excerpts

COVER STORY

Y

ou have come a long way since your debut in Bollywood, so has the graph panned out the way you had envisioned? I’d never thought that I would be an actor to begin with. So, when I joined the industry I had absolutely no idea what it would be like. And now that I look back, I think I was pretty naïve and unambitious so to say. So literally, life takes you by the ear, and you go along with whatever comes your way. For me it started with modelling assignments and then films just followed. There was no plan as such and I just went by how life took me by the collar - ‘Okay so come here and do this and you’re getting a good opportunity here’ or like a music video came along. Honestly things kind of came my way. So now when I look back I do think that I wasn’t the most ambitious, I wasn’t the most focused. I regret it. But like you asked me did it pan out the way I thought it would, I think the only point when I started to feel ambitious was when I took the time off for five to six years. Go on… The ambition kind of grew after I’d left and I had my son and it sort of kicked in a little later for me - the feeling of enjoying something so much and I missed cinema. I started to realise that there’s a sense of satisfaction and completion I felt when I did Hazaaron (Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi) or when I did Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow with Ruchi (Narain). Those were the only two films I had done when I left. And that’s when I started to feel like I really want to get back to something that gives me that kind of a sense of actualization, it’s like something that you have in you and you see it transfer into something. A realisation or the self-actualization or what you think where you can go and what you can become, what you have in you, the potential that you might have. So all those things kicked in much later. It’s a weird graph for me when I look back. And then I started missing it even more and then I came back with literally anything that came my way at that point. I got a call for a film that was going to be

I find complex beautiful. Something which is too simple and vanilla is a white-washed board. It’s too simple, it’s too white, it’s too clean for me to like. made by Farhan (Akhtar) called ‘Phone Booth’. It was supposed to be a period film about a love story in a phone booth. So the first call that I got was from Farhan through Niharika (Bhasin) who was doing costumes for that film. And that’s how I reached Mumbai after 6-7 years of break. But that film didn’t work out. So it did kind of pan out more than I had started off thinking I would,

but then you know ambition doesn’t stop and the greed of an actor doesn’t stop. So I do think that I wish I had done more work, I do wish that I get better parts to play. Not that I’m not proud, I’m very proud of whatever little work I have done but you know there’s this hunger that you just want more and you’re so envious of a lot of work out there that doesn’t come your way, in a healthy way of course. It’s a very natural

thing for any creative person I feel, that kind of envy but uske bina na aap actor ban nahin sakte ho. If you don’t have that hunger, this is not the place for you. You have to be that hungry and that greedy and you have to want it so bad. So it’s a good thing. I mean in a creative field, I personally look at it as a very good thing. So ambition lives on. And I don’t know if there’s ever a satisfied actor out there, I don’t know

if you’ve interviewed anybody who says ki ‘nahin bas ho gaya’. I think everybody wants more. So yeah, it hasn’t panned out all as much as I want it to be now but if I was to look at the girl back then, its way beyond what I could have imagined.

of grew. There was a kind of a vibe about it which I really enjoyed personally. I loved playing the character of Rukmani. And I even loved the way she had to sound… very husky and slow and she’s very measured with her voice.

Debutants, heroines especially stepped in doing breezy and glamorous romances, you know the kind of films that make you stars, and then they gradually move on to doing stronger roles or more meaningful cinema that would earn them their stripes and credibility as an actor! But you went the ‘ulta’ way… You came in with a hard-hitting movie bereft of all glamour but a movie that got you stamped as a strong actor to watch out for! Today which side do the scales tilt more, has the choosing process become any different today? See, as an actor you want to do everything. Either you start with the fluff and the pop and kind of candy roles and you move on and graduate to more real performances or then it’s the other way that you start with something like that and you move on to exploring some light entertainers because the actor wants to do everything. You want to do drama, thriller, romantic, serious everything. And the more love you get and appreciation you get for one thing, the more your courage as an actor grows to do more and try something different. So I think one way or the other, everybody wants to try everything. Whenever it comes. So has that choosing process changed? No, I think I would want everything. Like I hope the Hazaaron sequel happens. I’m really manifesting it happens. So I believe I’m supposed to get a call from Sudhir (Mishra) soon. He said he thought of an idea and he tweeted about it and he tagged me on it, so I said ‘Oh great! Does that mean I’m supposed to call you and get to your office?’ (laughs) So I hope that happens. And I would love to do a commercial Desi Boyz kind of a film too. I would love to do all of that! I want to do both ends of the spectrum, would love to cover everything all over again.

Yes, very regal and sensuous too. Yeah, exactly! And I thought it was very interesting for Pawan (director Pawan Kirpalani) to bring this up that because she has a certain grace and she is somebody who can change a man’s life, influence his choices, so she needs to be sensuous. And it comes through the way she looks and sits and talks and not with the clothing.

Your most recent Gaslight was very interesting too… Yes, it had its pace and it kind

Do you believe that the male actors have it easier in this industry the do you think that being a woman is a plus here? I think the negatives we all know and I think it’s in every industry. In every sphere women are fighting at their own levels. The pluses that we do have… Well, I don’t know. Right now the good thing is that there are so many makers out there exploring womenoriented roles and projects and the fact that most projects are more character-driven whether male or female. The audience is enjoying that so much. OTT has changed life for so many people, the female actors as well. But I still feel it’s a male dominated space. We can’t deny the most obvious thing. It is male dominated. But having said that, I feel everything is a cycle. Like how Ektaa (Kapoor) has done very well as a producer. Strong producers like Zoya (Akhtar) have changed the narrative to some extent but I think it will take a lot more number and lot more time for it to just normalise and balance out completely. And we have to pay our dues. Like in the West, they have paid their dues. The women have proved, they have worked hard and they’ve stuck with it and they’ve fought it for so many years for so long. So I think vo toh aapko karna hoga. My dad used to always say, “You got to pay your dues, don’t think some miracle’s going to happen. It’s going to take so much time.” So I think that

A realisation or the self-actualization or what you think where you can go and what you can become, what you have in you, the potential that you might have. So all those things kicked in much later. It’s a weird graph for me when I look back.

change will happen. It has changed, maybe not so remarkably. But if we look 20 years, from then to now, there’s a huge change. So it’s changing. Yes, from actresses being judged and then boxed into certain categories to now accepting so many factors about them like they would for the male counterparts including

their age, their marital status, their personal choices, their professional ambitions. When it has come to living life on your terms, you have always stuck by your convictions and been very courageous about your choices. Where do you draw that strength from? I think the strength maybe comes from the fact that I love cinema. I don’t know

COVER STORY what else I would do if I don’t do this. So for me I feel that if this is it then might as well have a good time doing it. Do what you feel like doing and have fun doing it, enjoy it, be grateful enough that you’re not doing it for the money. I mean of course we all need the money but it’s not that my life will change drastically if I don’t work. God’s been kind enough. So I’m doing it for the love of cinema, maybe that’s where the strength comes from. Do you have a dream role? Like you said that Farhan was planning a period romance with you. Would you want to explore something like that? I love period films. I love history. I love all of that. I’ve always said, Rekha ji and Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan is one of my favourite films. The women, the way they were portrayed back then and the way Umrao Jaan is, how it is about a woman’s strength, weakness, love, sacrifice and that period. I love it…. I can keep talking about that film and Rekha ji’s character. She was so ahead of her time. So for me ideally, I would love something that complex. I find complex beautiful. Something which is too simple and vanilla is a whitewashed board. It’s too simple, it’s

Quick

too white, it’s too clean for me to like. There has to be more to it, so I do get drawn to complex characters. So something like that would be great. What does Power mean to you? When we talk about women empowerment, what’s power for you? To be able to make choice. To be able to make a choice to walk away from something or to do something. I think that is power. And it doesn’t hurt me. I think there is power when you say ‘no’ to certain people, certain suggestions. There is power to it. But at the same time there is also power to be able to do something the way you want to do it. I mean it’s both ways. That is the sense of power. But the fact that you can say ‘no’ to something and walk away, that is power. It’s the number of ‘nos’ that you have said in your life that define it. When you are not in front of the camera, what would we catch you doing the most? Chilling with my dog. I write. I do intent on being a writer and there are a couple of scripts, I’ve written stories and I just enjoy writing screenplays as well. I think after I started doing that is when I started to love cinema even more. So you know there’s this one scene in Inkaar when my character goes and confronts Arjun’s character.

WITH

I had so many suggestions to Sudhir about it. So he asked me to pen them down and quite a large part of that conversation of what she says were all written by me. That was a huge encouragement. Many years later I wrote again and I really enjoy that now. So I hope I can do that short film that I’ve written, I would love to shoot that soon. So that’s one of the bucket list things. Any plans of turning producer with that one then? I don’t know. Right now it’s really in the air. Definitely I’m directing and acting in it because I’ve written it and I’ve got the story, screenplay, dialogue, everything done by me. And more out of the fact that I just want so much control of it because I’m scared that I would lose what I want to do. So yeah… I was just thinking about that if not now, then when? Sometimes you just have to see how good or bad you are at it. There is no other way. What are your other upcoming projects? There are these two films that I’m doing. Very interesting characters, two extremely different characters. So I’m really looking forward to that. We’ll start shooting beginning of January next year. So that’s what’s coming for me next year.

Chitrangda Singh

What is your one ghar ka nuskha type beauty secret? If you could play a historical character or do anyone’s biopic, who would it be? I think facials are a waste of time. A beauty secret - there’s nothing better than a workout and keeping yourself well-hydrated. The one thing I do alag se is having a detox vegetable juice which works like miracle. It is 1 karela, 1 beetroot, and a couple of amlas. It’s horrible. You’ll just like throw up or something. It tastes like venom, but it’s the best thing. And it’s like a shot that I have in the morning after like 2 glasses of water and that is amazing for your skin, for your system. It just cleanses it. Do it for a month and see what happens. But be close to a bathroom for a while because beginning of a detox is not always fun (laughs).

Your guilty pleasure? Twix chocolate. I love Twix. Or a Twix cake!

A superpower you wish you had.

I would love to have a swimmer’s body, like one of those divers. That superpower to have that amazing muscle and everything. That’s my dream body.

Three words that describe you the best?. Passionate, emotional, overthinker!

Either Umrao Jaan or Smitaji (Patil). I think she was such an amazing actor, so ahead of her time. I’ve heard some of her interviews lately which I hadn’t heard earlier and she just spoke with so much of intellect. Even her performances and sometimes you know how your emotional intelligence actually shows on your face. So all that came from somewhere and she just speaks so deeply and I think what she went through in her life, I would just love to play her.

A fashion hack you swear by! I think what I love and works instantly is the sunscreen spray on your legs. It just glows. The transparent one not the white one. It is amazing.

If you could ask someone out for a romantic dinner date, who would it be? Tom Cruise right after Top Gun. Absolutely Maverick! They don’t make them like that anymore. So him and Brad Pitt just all wrinkles and everything whatever he looks right now, I love him. So Brad Pitt now and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan! Like Zanjeer and all that, angry man! SHE’S GOT THE LOOKS! Celebrity stylist Aastha Sharma narrates her philosophy to Tanisha Bhattacharya

Aastha Sharma has made a name for herself styling Indian and international celebrities. She started out as an editorial stylist before making the big jump to being a commercial stylist. Her philosophy is simple – she lets the personality of her client take over, adding touches that suit the occasion to create a holistic style experience that makes a splash and looks functional at the same time. Her own style choices are quite bohemian but they don’t take precedence over the needs of her clients. She’s aware that today, looking good no longer matters, it’s looking good on social media that counts and she makes sure her clients do get written about, for all the right things, of course. Did you always want to be a stylist in the fashion industry?

I wanted to become a lawyer because my dad was one but later I changed my mind. My friend was getting into this fashion college. They had these cool fashion courses. I too joined along with her and that’s how I got into fashion marketing and merchandising. When I was doing my masters there; I discovered styling and it was so new and there were mainly editorial stylists in Mumbai. There were only a handful of celebrity stylists. So that’s when I got into it and started enjoying it.

It was quite a shift from studying law to styling. We had few career options when we were younger. It was a lawyer, doctor, or engineer at the time. Fashion is now regarded as a legitimate profession. Designers were previously at the forefront of it. Earlier, if you were daring, you could become an air hostess or a pilot.I believe there was a lack of awareness, but nowadays, as you know, kids know what they want to do.

Who was the first A-list celebrity you styled for?

When I began as an editorial stylist,I worked on covers with everyone. Because I was also a fashion producer, I was literally on every shoot. My first freelance client was Neha Dhupia, and then I styled Chitrangda Singh. Then there was

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. These are the first two or three celebrities I worked with.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s recent runway look from Paris Fashion Week has gotten everyone talking.

She carried it quite well. You know, it was just the occasion and the colour gold. Whatever we were thinking, it just clicked. We had a sketch and as soon as the outfit was finished, we tried it on Aishwarya; it was a perfect fit.

Having styled Aishwarya for such prestigious events as Cannes, what have you observed about her personal style?

stature and the type of event in mind. We have to keep in mind the type of stage she’ll be on and the type of carpet she’ll be doing and make sure her outfits balance out where she’ll be. It’s always grand and expansive.

We’re always a little bit experimental because we know doing the same thing every year You’ve styled for editorial covers, films will get boring. We try to experiment with and runways. How different are the silhouettes and colours while keeping her experiences from one another?

Glitz and Glam Sometimes all you need is a little sparkle and shine! Glittery eyeshadows have become a go-to choice for those seeking a dazzling and glamorous eye makeup look. These little pots of magic are your ticket to eyes that twinkle like stars on a moonlit night. Imagine a spectrum of colours, from sultry midnight blues to enchanting rose golds, all dusted with a sprinkling of fairy-like sparkle. The trend encompasses a range of colours and textures, from subtle shimmer to bold metallic shades, allowing for versatile creativity. Glittery eyeshadows can be applied all over the lid, used as a pop of sparkle in the centre of the eyelid, or blended into other eyeshadow shades to add dimension. To achieve a long-lasting finish, using a glitter primer or adhesive is recommended. While glittery eyeshadows offer an enchanting and eyecatching appeal, they also require careful application and removal to prevent fallout. This trend adds a touch of glamour and drama to any makeup look, making it a favourite for special occasions and nights out.

He’s raw, he’s hot and in his 2.0 version he’s setting the screens on fire like never before! Our December Digital Cover Star Bobby Deol has been creating a flutter with his impactful, powerpacked performances and is all the buzz in recent times. First Aashram and now with Animal - directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and bankrolled by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series - he has reclaimed his spot and the crown! Whether it’s the intense intimidating look or the now iconic entry, Bobby has nailed his role in the violent family drama to perfection with an incredible ease. I met the star in Dubai for an exclusive interview and over cups of coffee and phone calls on hold we plunge into a fun and candid chat. And as we discuss cinema back then and now, the calm, suave and looking handsome-asever Bobby also talks all about turning on the beast mode, nailing the menacing acts with ease, lessons learnt and makes a fun revelation about ‘Lord Bobby’ ruling the meme world!

You seem to have been exploring and enjoying this whole new version of you… Aashram, now Animal… you seem to be biting into these complex and menacing characters with absolute relish… Yeah, I mean if I could reverse time and go back, I wish I had always been this focused. But I guess you learn with life’s experiences, and I think I’ve

learned quite a bit and I’m still doing it. But it just makes me feel that I can conquer the world. I know I have the capability of doing good work and I just need to get the right parts. And I was lucky that I got to work with some amazing directors again in recent times. Even Love Hostel, Class of 83, they are all parts I’ve really enjoyed. Yes, but while they all have been really versatile, many were risky too. Yet you have pulled each one of them with great aplomb. Weren’t you wary of experimenting? You know, just the fact there were people that actually thought of me for those roles, offering me the kind of parts that I was looking for, all so different that itself said a lot. And I mean, I had nothing to lose. I’m very fearless as an actor and I want to challenge myself. I just want to keep getting out of my comfort zone. That’s why, I was lucky that I got to go through and do Animal and to work with Ranbir, such an amazing actor. Yes, you have been quite fearless in your choice of roles. So do you think that not being bound by the image of playing the hero, now there’s more freedom as an actor to actually explore a wider array and go for these roles? Yes, and I feel it’s giving me more

satisfaction as an actor too. And I think it’s just motivating me more. I don’t know how to express this, but I just feel I can conquer the world.

“I would tell the

younger Bobby to be the Bobby that I am now! But then you know maturity takes time. It takes experience, and you learn to value things that you once took for granted 20 years back.

You had grasped everyone’s attention right from the first teaser of Animal with just one shot itself… I was very lucky to get this part. I’ve been a big fan of Sandeep as the director and also the two actors that I’m a big fan of are Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor. And here I was working with both Sandeep and Ranbir! Also I must say that the teaser was done very intelligently without revealing much, yet giving a glimpse of what lay ahead! Essentially it’s a family drama at heart and they had to show every element of it yet not give out much. And the way he put my shot in the end was his intelligence. It’s great because everyone seems to have enjoyed it so much that when my shot comes, it gets even more importance. But that’s what it’s all about. The family drama.

INTERVIEW

Sometimes exploring these new facets and roles, the actors can surprise themselves too. Did that happen with Animal? It did, because you know I was really enjoying my work on set. I mean working with Sandeep, he really inspires you. There was this weird connection I had with him. Like without him speaking much, I could feel what he wanted and then he would come up with one or two things he had and then tell me and we’d do it. Like even with the teaser, we were running late with time, so I never went to the monitor to see any of these shots. And when the teaser released, that’s the first time I saw the shot too. And I was like, okay, this is the wow experience, that moment, you know, because I hadn’t seen it visually. And for me it was the first time and I didn’t know how the audience were going to react to it. You know, it was just one of those shots. And then it was crazy with the way people reacted to it. I had never got so many phone calls for a teaser, so many people from the industry, you know, it’s like it was so nice, it was so encouraging. It felt like meri film lag gayi hai aur hit ho gayi hai (laughs)! So from Babaji and Jap Naams to now this… It just shows you the way people have actually reacted to this teaser and accepted it so nicely that you know, they’re waiting to watch you. That’s what an actor wants. Yes the response has been phenomenal… Yes and for everyone… Ranbir’s an amazing actor, so is Anil Kapoor… And I’m sure this one’s going to be

memorable for all of us. Looks like 2023 belonged to the Deols! There’s Dharmendraji in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahanii, Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, Abhay in Trial By Fire, Rajveer with Dono, for Karan on a personal note as he tied the knot and now you are ending the year with a big bang! Yes it’s been amazing for all the three generations of Deols on screen. My dad, and my brother, then my brother’s youngest son... So it’s never happened before. I don’t think so. The success and the love for my dad for his part in Rocky… and then Gadar 2 was phenomenal, and it was all so organic. Nothing was manipulated or planned that okay we all will have one release each! It was just what was happening. It was an emotion which everybody felt, the whole of the country, the whole industry, I mean, the love we got, it was so genuine. When my brother had a get-together to celebrate Gadar’s success he wasn’t sure if everyone would come. But then everyone came to celebrate the success and it was the best ever! Yes, it was truly amazing for all the films to do so well and to see the industry come together to celebrate the success. Also the industry needed these hits in theaters… Absolutely. The year has been good for the industry. How much do the box office collections matter to you? I think more than anything else, more than thinking about numbers, I like to be a part of a project which when I go on the set, I’m happy being on set and not thinking or worrying about the outcome at the Box Office because that outcome no one can predict. As an actor I’ve seen success, I have also seen failures. So for me, it’s like I said, I’m fearless I just want to play characters which I enjoy as an actor. I can entertain the audiences with my performances. That’s what I am looking for. Tell us about your upcoming projects. We heard you’ll be making your South debut soon! Yes, I might be doing films down South, so that’s interesting and I’m excited about. But I can’t speak anything about that. Besides that I have some other interesting projects too that will be announced in due time by the makers.

“I’m very fearless as

an actor and I want to challenge myself. I just want to keep getting out of my comfort zone. That’s why, I was lucky that I got to go through and do Animal

What is the one advice you would have loved to give your younger self? I would tell the younger Bobby to be the Bobby that I am now! But then you know maturity takes time. It takes experience, and you learn to value things that you once took for granted 20 years back. But it’s all a part of growing up, going through the ups and downs in life and learning and growing through it all. You learn more from your family, and it’s all authentic, you understand it better. And that makes you a better person and makes you a better actor too.

Bobby

Lord Bobby is all the rage not just on screens but on internet too… What can I say… Jap Naam (laughs)! I am thankful to all the fan clubs and the Bobbyians as they are called.

What would we catch you doing when not shooting? Being with my family. I love being able to join my family. We are very close knit. I love being with my two boys, my wife, that’s most important for me. Because you become so busy with work that you need time to be with them, you know!

If your life had a theme song, which song would you pick? One of my most favorite songs is Imagine by John Lennon, because I feel if those lyrics of the song, if we really believed in them, this world will be such a beautiful place, right!

Tell us one thing about Bobby that no one else knows! I don’t think anyone would ever know that little bit (laughs). It is difficult to think of myself like that… Wherever I go, I don’t have a defence mechanism. I am direct, I see, I react. That’s me, you know, and that’s what I am. Everything is out there. All real!

As a teenager whose posters did you have in your room? I had put up my brother’s pictures on this one cupboard I have. I was a big fan of my brother and also my dad’s pictures. And that cupboard is still in the house. I was a big fan of David Bowie and I had even put up a poster of David Bowie.

nimal is already roaring loud at the Box Office. Be it the impactful dialogues, or intense characters, the high octane action sequences, the emotionally charged scenes or the hit cult music that’s become all the rage. At 500 crore plus (at the time of going to print) the audience’s verdict is as loud and clear as the jingling of the cash registers the film has brought on at the box office ! I’d met Bobby Deol and Ranbir Kapoor – the two stars of the Sandeep Reddy Vanga film bankrolled by T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar – ahead of the film’s release while they were on a whirlwind tour to Dubai. A special teaser of their Animal was unveiled at the iconic Burj Khalifa a day earlier. The brazen rawness of the alphas unleashed in the trailer and the teaser had the movie-lovers shocked and dazed. Both the stars pushed out of their comfort zones and into the wild, mark their territories with aplomb acing their roles with flawless performances, and bringing to the fore a fierceness and ferociousness quite unlike we have ever seen them do on screen before. “It’s an A-rated Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham,” laughed Ranbir as I asked him how he’d best describe this film. Casual, candid and laidback there are no traces or hints of the intensity of the characters the two play in their film as we settle down for a chat. Clearly their transformation on screen, as they fulfil the director’s vision, speaks volumes of them as powerhouse performers. The two stars also share a great equation with each other and are quite vocal about their love and admiration for each other as actors too. In this exclusive interview we talked to the two about their common and a shared passion for cinema, taking risks, tapping in the darkest and unleashing the wild on screen!

What does a Thursday night look for you right before the release? RK : I think like very artiste you feel anxious and nervous, jitters because somewhere the next day your work that you put in for so long, you dreamt about, for us six months, for directors and technicians even more, eventually it’s judgement day. And what happens is that the audience is going to see the film and after three hours they’re going to say, ‘Haan mast tha ya nahin nahin accha nahin tha’ and that’s it. The judgement is made. So, it’s such a weird industry like how it works, how it operates. At what point did you agree to doing Animal, both of you, because this is not your run-of-the-mill regular characters or conventional roles? RK : I think the answer lies in your question itself, just the fact that to get the opportunity to work with such an original director like Sandeep Reddy Vanga and to do something which is edgy, which is not runof-the-mill, which is original, I think every actor strives and prays to get an original part or a film like this. So, I think it was a no-brainer there. BD : I was really excited when I got the call from Sandeep, because I love his work. Imagine he’s the only director who made the same film twice and made them so well. So I just love the way he portrays characters and I knew that whatever he’s going to offer me, it will be completely different, like a lifetime character. You know you have these characters which become the moment of your life, you know you’ll never see these kinds of characters. So these are the kind of characters we’ve gotten. RK : And I think another thing about Sandeep is his understanding of music. He’s one of those rare new-age commercial filmmakers who understands the value of music. Even though this is not a love story, even though it’s a family crime drama, to incorporate populous team music in a genre like this is not really easy. And I’m only saying this because of all the filmmakers that I’ve been working with, as the years are going by, unfortunately filmmakers are finding it very hard to incorporate commercial music in their films. And music is such a big part of our DNA, of

us Indians. We love music. BD : And he’s amazing. He’s from the Telugu cinema, right? And he understands Punjabi folk tunes. The songs he has chosen, the lyrics of those songs, I mean if you hear out the whole album, you’ll see the lyrics are so well written and they move the story forward which is the most important thing when you put songs in a film. It has to not drag the film, it has to push the film forward, I think it’s the most difficult thing to do for a director. And he’s done it. When you’re playing such angstridden, violent, complex, strident characters, we know, that is not at all what you guys are about. So which inner traits of your personality did you have to dig in to bring that out? RK : You know I think this film for both of us, for both our characters is not only angst, I think there’s a gamut of emotions. It’s angst of course, but it’s got love, it’s got positivity, it’s got insecurity, it’s got jealousy, it’s got lust, love. It has all of it. And it’s not just for my character. It’s for every character. If it’s for one scene or for 10 scenes, it’s so intricate and so complex that you wonder. When I see the film now or when I see certain scenes, I find there’s no reference to these characters, these emotions. It is so new and at the same time it’s relatable. It is filmy, it is edgy. So, I don’t know how to place this film. The characters called those emotions out in us as actors. BD : It’s basically… you know the story isn’t always going to be the same. And the way to write it fresh, that’s the difficult part. And Sandeep has done that. Because love stories kitni bani hain, action films kitni bani hain lekin har film toh chalti nahin hai. Let’s say ek aadha koi hit ho gayi to sab logon ko vaisi filmein banani hai. Par vaise hota nahin hai. They rather work because of the way it was written, the emotions and scenes. And I think that’s what Animal, I mean I’m not comparing it to others but I’m just trying to say story wise, it’s original. Some of the movies come very commercially packed, some of them are very experimental in the sense that you are not too sure how it will be seen because you’re exploring that space for the first time. It could be a conversation starter, but you’re still unsure of how it will be at the Box Office… Do you as actors think of these, like picking up

“THERE’'S NEVER A SAFETY NET. YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE RISK, YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE PLUNGE OF DOING SOMETHING FREELY, FEARLESSLY AND AUDIENCE WHEN THEY SEE A GOOD INTENTION, WHEN THEY SEE ORIGINALITY, WHEN THEY SEE AUTHENTICITY, THEY KNOW IT.” - RANBIR KAPOOR.” December 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 27

INTERVIEW films that are sure to be hits or taking risks? BD : Aisa kuch nahi hota! Nothing is a surety in this industry. No one can be completely sure of a film’s outcome… So at the box office every film is a risk and as an actor, we are always open to taking that risk. RK : I mean going back, I’ll just mention his film. When Gupt was coming out, who would have thought that the kind of story that Gupt was murder mystery and the leading actress is the killer. Like that on paper doesn’t sound commercial or safe. So I mean there’s never a safety net. You have to take the risk, you have to take the plunge of doing something freely, fearlessly and audience when they see a good intention, when they see originality, when they see authenticity, they know it.

I JUST LOVE THE WAY HE (SANDEEP) PORTRAYS CHARACTERS AND I KNEW THAT WHATEVER HE’S GOING TO OFFER ME, IT WILL BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, LIKE A LIFETIME CHARACTER. YOU KNOW YOU HAVE THESE CHARACTERS WHICH BECOME THE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFE, YOU KNOW YOU’'LL NEVER SEE THESE KINDS OF CHARACTERS. SO THESE ARE THE KIND OF CHARACTERS WE'’VE GOTTEN. - BOBBY DEOL

Is there ever a dilemma, thinking of what kind of a statement is it going to make for the society… BD : I think it’s more about the characters you get offered and yes, like I did Aashram, I mean I don’t know why I’m giving you the reference of Aashram, but it was a character who was just evil but it was important to make something like that because Prakash Jha always takes up subjects that tell the audience and the world that this is happening in your society, we should be aware of it. And I think somewhere, I’m not saying Animal is like that, but Animal is trying to show the people existing around you and makes you question yourself that I have these thoughts in my head, I should not have these thoughts, because we are humans, we aren’t perfect, but we aren’t animals… So is it a family film? RK : It is a family film. It’s an A-rated Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. It’s all about loving your family. In this it’s all about killing your family (laughs). BD : That’s exactly the way to describe it.

As actors you quickly switch on and off because you’re required to do that. But there are some actors who say that when they’re playing such complex characters, when you dig into the psyche, it takes them time to recuperate from the character and coming back to feeling a little normal. Does that happen with you? BD : It doesn’t happen. I mean it happens when you’re doing a scene in the day. You have that emotion so much that you are feeling it and feeling it because you need to, you know the whole day is still left and you have to be in that character. It’s not like I’m a method actor or whatever, there are emotions which just linger on for the day but it’s not like, ‘Oh My God, it affects me that much…’ RK : You know I had this experience once. When I did Rockstar and when the film got over, I thought that I’m feeling so empty but then as I grew older I realized that it was not really the character or the part, it was the people I was working with. I was getting some form of missing pangs about those people because I was so fond of that crew, the director, everybody associated with that. So, it was not that I was going through some character withdrawal symptoms… BD : Yes, when we finished shooting and the next day I got up and there was no shooting, I was feeling so sad. You’ll miss Ranbir then, after the promotions are done? BD : Yeah, I will! RK : We already miss each other! What is the one thing that most surprised you about Bobby? RK : You know I’ve known Bobby Sir since a long time, our families have been associated and close to each other. But when I got the opportunity to work with him… See you have certain perception of an actor, of a star when you work with them. But he is such a loving person, such a giving person. In a way he’s always encouraging you. Because he’s been there, done that, he’s done everything. He’s already experienced all the things that probably for me, I’m experiencing as an actor or as a star right now. And I think to have the ability to still be such a giving person and to give not just the good side but, to be so

honest about his mistakes, about where he went wrong and to advice that to a relatively young actor to him, I think that requires a lot of niceness and goodness. BD : See, I don’t know about him, but I mean the way he is talking about me, just shows what he is. Because I’m a big fan of him as an actor. Seriously, if I have to choose a male and a female actor, it’s him and his wife Alia as an actress. But I never knew him so closely till I worked with him, I mean yeah, I saw him when he was a young kid. He dances so well. I remember, I said if he becomes an actor, he’s going to be amazing because I used to see him, I used to notice him on the dance floor. And he had no inhibitions, nothing. He was just enjoying and dancing, he dances really well. And I’ve seen him, and I’ve met him a couple of times here and there. When we started working, what I loved about him the most was that he’s so grounded. He’s so down-to-earth. He’s so honest about himself. And he is such a big star and at the same time he will make you feel really superior. I’ve worked in the industry for so many years, I’ve worked with so many stars and I know their attitude and I wonder why they are like that. I’ve seen actors who started the career around the same time, and

they’ve changed because they’ve become bigger stars. So that’s one thing I love that he never lost it. I think that’s the upbringing which makes you like that. Seriously, when you understand how you’ve been brought up by your parents, you know exactly the values. And we have seen ups and downs in our parents’ lives. He’s seen that. And you actually don’t become egoistic of your success then. You stay humble about it. When Kabir Singh had released, a section of people felt that Sandeep’s putting out toxic masculinity, even if at the end of the day it was a conversation starter. So, whenever you’re looking at a character, it is great if it can address an issue. But there can be some backlash to that too. Do you feel that something of that sort might happen with Animal? RK : A hundred times more! And I think as any piece of art, you need to have conversation. You need people to love it, you need people to hate it, you need people to praise it and to bash it. And I think with Animal, it’s a hundred times even more than Kabir Singh. Okay, so give us three reasons why we should watch Animal? RK : You say my name, I’ll say Bobby Sir (laughs). But seriously, it is Bobby Sir, the story, and the feeling of the movie. I think after the film gets over what you as an

audience will feel will be a very new feeling. BD : For me, it’s working with him for the first time and not just that, it’s just that he’s an amazing actor and he’s performed outstandingly, but Sandeep as a director, he is going to be one of those directors for many, many years to come that is going to surprise the audience and give them something to watch. And that is one of the most important things. And it’s just one of the new dramas which you have not seen for a long time, the drama you want to see. RK : The correct genre if I take it from Bobby Sir is that it’s a family crime drama, that’s the genre of the film. It’s not really an action film or nowadays people very loosely use the word a ‘mass’ film. What is a mass film is that it’s reaching a larger audience, it’s reaching a general audience, like every strata of the society or every age will enjoy this film. But I think the true genre is a family crime drama. If you had to relate to one animal, which one would it be? BD : I think I’m a dog! RK : Yeah, he’s a puppy dog for sure. I relate to elephants. You know I love the Ganpati festival, as a child I loved watching elephants and I like the fact that elephants always moving with the family. They’re always together, they’re always protective. I like that quality of elephants.

Would you say it was far more difficult to make inroads in Hindi cinema, considering you have had a great run in the South Indian industry? When I started my journey in the film industry, I didn’t categorise it as either Hindi or South Indian. I simply chose roles that I felt were the right fit for my career at the time. I’m grateful I made that choice because the South audience embraced me with immense love and made me feel like one of their own. Language was never my primary focus; it was always about the right script and role. However, I must admit that breaking into the industry without the backing of a film family or a well-connected mentor can be more challenging. In such circumstances, the success of a film can make or break your career. A hit film can open doors to more opportunities, while a setback might require you to start from scratch and work relentlessly to secure your next role. This is the path I’ve taken to build my career. In the end, one thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t keep a determined and talented individual down. I’ve persevered through the challenges and continue to move forward in this ever-evolving industry.

She’s an epitome of beauty. Her ethereal looks are mesmerising and compel you to turn your attention to her. She’s been a successful actor both in South and Hindi cinemas. She hasn’t chosen just one industry but has learnt to live out of a suitcase, jetting in and out of Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and locations around the world. Ask her how she manages it all, she laughs and says it’s all mind over matter. And that if your dreams don’t keep you awake, then you’re not dreaming right. She doesn’t want to be known as a PYT but takes pains to understand her role and does full justice to it. She’s got a huge fan base on social media and is wise enough to concentrate on the positives of it and doesn’t let the trolls get to her. Despite spending a decade in the film industry, she insists she’s not a veteran and has miles and miles to go before agreeing to own that sobriquet. The actress takes a look down her career and answers all our questions with aplomb in an engaging interview. Excerpts:

and no connections in the film industry. I didn’t have a godfather to pave the way, but it seems the universe had its own plans. There’s still a long road ahead, with a list of esteemed filmmakers I aspire to collaborate with, characters I’m eager to portray and plenty yet to prove. Have you ever felt demotivated in your career? Yes, there have been moments in my career when I’ve felt demotivated. I’m only human and it’s perfectly normal to experience those emotions. When such feelings arise, I allow myself a brief period, ranging from 10 minutes to a couple of hours, to acknowledge and process them. However, I don’t permit myself the luxury of self-pity or dwelling on my circumstances. I come from a family with a resilient and warrior-like spirit. My parents, in particular, have been my role models. They instilled in me the values of passion, hard work and most importantly, gratitude. A heart filled with gratitude is a constant source of motivation.

You have been in the film industry for almost a decade now. Which was that one moment where you felt like, “Oh, I have made it”? I don’t think there was a particular moment where I felt that I had made it. I believe the love that my fans give me is the most precious moment for me. In those moments, I feel I have done something right to have won the hearts of so many people. The love of the audience is what makes us actors and those little moments are the moments we live for. It’s been a beautiful rollercoaster ride so far; it’s had its thrilling moments and its dips. But every step has been a great learning experience. I’m still evolving as an actor and I believe that the best is yet to come. I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and the support of the audience. All I want to do is work harder and challenge myself in every role. It’s been a journey of growth, learning and perseverance. Have you ever reflected on your journey? Yes, I’ve taken moments to reflect on my journey. With my relentless work ethic, I often find myself moving from one project to the next, keeping busy. However, when I do pause and cast a glance back at my career, it’s a humbling realisation. Not bad for a shy, introverted girl with stage fright December 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 31

INTERVIEW

Pooja Hegde

bats our questions out of the park What’s the real Pooja like—ambitious, emotional, or practical?  I’m a mix of all three. Why limit yourself to just one? What would you say has been your biggest achievement?  My most significant accomplishment, I would say, is forging my own path, particularly in an industry as fiercely competitive and challenging as ours. Who is your dream co-star?  Ranbir Kapoor, and of course the all-time super star, the legend, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. Dreams to be achieved...  There are lots of them. The many facets of Pooja Hegde will unfold slowly but surely. How do you sum up life?  A collection of memories and dreams. How ambitious are you?  More than you can even dream of. Which three films do you wish you had been a part of?  Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Chandini and La La Land. You’ve done Mohenjo Daro with Hrithik Roshan. What sets him apart?  His grace. In Housefull 4, Akshay Kumar was your co-star. What is the one quality you admire about him?  His fitness and punctuality. You worked with Ranveer Singh in Cirkus, who is known for his high energy. What did you learn from him?  To be free of inhibitions. Which actor have you had a huge crush on?  Ryan Gosling. What’s your idea of a romantic date?  There should be lots of conversation and laughter. Do you consider yourself a romantic?  Yes. I love the idea of love. What is the first thing you notice in a man?  How respectful he is to those around him. What would you look for in an ideal companion?  Honesty, intelligence and someone who has a kind heart. Be real with each other and be each other’s cheerleaders. Also, nice gestures towards loved ones go a long way. What’s the one thing that brings a smile to your face?  Seeing my family happy and proud of me. How do you tackle the gossip that’s written about you? 32I filter it out and focuson myDecember work. 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST

How do you tackle failures and how have you managed to stay positive despite all your ups and downs? I remind myself why I do what I do. I feel genuine love and passion for my profession and for films in general; this keeps me motivated no matter what phase of my career I am in. I also remind myself that ups and downs are part of life; nothing lasts forever, and therefore it’s important to enjoy each aspect of life. People talk about panIndian stars. And you are one of the few actresses who works in both worlds. How do you manage to balance your career in both Hindi and the South industries? It’s a very rewarding feeling when people know you across the country and sometimes across the world. I guess I made the right choices. As far as balancing is concerned, well, sleep a little less and work a bit harder. I’m constantly learning different languages, memorising lines and emoting in different languages and adapting to the different work cultures and environments! But most importantly, learn about the culture and the women across India and what makes them who they are, especially, in order to play them more truthfully. You’d be seen next in a romantic thriller called Deva, along with Shahid Kapoor. What makes Deva a promising project? Deva is a promising project because it offers a unique and engaging storyline with a strong character for me to portray. This is my first collaboration with Shahid Kapoor and it’s a film that combines action, drama and entertainment in a way that will keep the audience engaged and entertained. My fans will see me in a new light in this film. The team behind the project is also highly talented, which makes it even more exciting. I can’t wait for it to be released.

What was exciting about Shahid Kapoor as a co-star? Shahid Kapoor is an exceptionally talented actor. What excited me about working with him is his dedication and his ability to immerse himself completely in his characters. He brings a certain energy and intensity to his roles and I am really looking forward to working with him on the project. Do you think Bollywood stereotypes you as this pretty girl next door? I’m just a baby in the Hindi industry; there is a lot more to come from me and I’m excited to show audiences how versatile I can be and what I can do. How difficult is it to be an actress in today’s time where anyone with a smartphone can troll you? It’s definitely difficult. However, where there is negativity that exists on social media, there is also a lot of positivity out there. I receive so much love from my fans every day and for that, I’m truly grateful. I try focusing on love and positivity and sharing the same through my social media handles. How do you maintain your dignity in a world where rumours fly thick and fast? Honestly, it’s an occupational hazard. It’s part and parcel of the work we are doing. Our industry is always in the public eye. It’s important to remember that it’s not necessary to react to everything you hear; as long as you know your own reality, maintaining your dignity becomes easy. You’ve mentioned earlier that you were a shy, introverted, and reserved child. How have you changed as a person over the years? I’m pretty much the same person. I’m still very reserved, unless I’m in my private space with my closest friends and I know I can be completely free. Being an actor has definitely helped me and pushed me

to be more outgoing. But, heart of heart, it’s not what comes naturally to me. It’s a constant battle to push myself out of my comfort zone. Hopefully, this coming year, I can be better at that. An actor is constantly looking for validation from the outside world. I do have high standards for my work, and I strive to meet those standards before seeking validation from others. However, I also prioritise the happiness of my wonderful fans and eagerly anticipate their reactions to my work. The love and support they show mean the world to me. What kind of roles do you aspire to take up, particularly in Hindi cinema? Roles that let me express myself as an actor and push me to be the best possible performer I can be. I’m excited to do roles that will consistently surprise and entertain audiences. Roles that excite me and let me explore sides of myself that people haven’t yet seen. Furthermore, the chance to work with great directors is something that excites me and pushes me every day. I don’t limit myself to certain genres. As much as I love films that explore interesting characters and touch the emotional core of what makes us human, I also love films that let one laugh, escape and genuinely just have a good time. What do you do to stay grounded? I consider myself fortunate to have a robust support system within my family. They ensure that I never let my success go to my head. Their honesty about my work and my overall career keeps me grounded and helps me maintain perspective. Additionally, my unwavering faith and belief in God serve as a constant reminder to stay humble and prioritise being a good human being, preventing me from getting too carried away with my achievements. n

But the credit for Animal’s music goes completely to Sandeep. I have loved every single track and not asked him to change anything. That’s a rarity you know,” the music mogul reveals candidly in this exclusive interview. I’M TOTALLY INVOLVED, BUT AS A PRODUCER I DON’T INTERFERE WITH THE DIRECTOR’S VISION. EVERY DIRECTOR THAT I’M WORKING WITH… THEY ALL WILL TELL YOU THAT WHAT THEY LOVE THE MOST ABOUT T-SERIES IS THAT I GIVE THEM COMPLETE CREATIVE FREEDOM. I DON’T TELL THEM I KNOW BETTER THAN THEM. THAT’S A VERY IMPORTANT THING.

is there to entertain. It’s an entertaining film. No doubt that the thought process is very different and that’s why it also stands out. Like even in Kabir Singh, we got a 300 crore business.

All the actors and directors who work with you always have one common thing to say, that is how pampered they were on the sets. So how involved are you as a producer? See, I have a one-to-one relationship with all my directors and actors, and I’m totally involved, but as a producer I don’t interfere with the director’s vision. Every director that I’m working with… Sandeep or Anurag Basu, Luv Ranjan, they all will tell you that what they love the most about T-Series is that I give them complete creative freedom. I don’t tell them I know better than them. That’s a very important thing. I Animal looked very promising ever since the tell them I can give great suggestions on first teaser dropped. How excited are you the music and at times I will even put about this one? my foot down on the call for music but Very excited. It’s our flagship project I have now changed that too (laughs). I and we’ve been working on it since put my foot down just a little. So when long now, from the lockdown time it comes to the songs we should be actually. And we’ve been really on the same page. On most of the big excited about it since Sandeep first movies I sit on the music myself and narrated the script. Right from the personally select songs. Like in Kabir word go we were convinced and Singh, Sandeep was not convinced believed that he would pull it off. Getting closer to the day of release, we about a few songs, but I was and I made him keep them and those songs worked. do get a little nervous too… In Animal too, that was our deal, the creative was his, his baby and I will Inspite of so many hits? Yes, inspite of so many films (laughs), not change or pressure him to add any we all do feel a bit nervous, the actors song. But songs are my call. I promised him that I will not make him add any too feel nervous. But more excited than nervous to see how the audience song or change the screenplay, but I had to like the songs that he has, that receives it, especially in theatres. was a must. Full credit to him, he got Good films are working in theatres, every single song bang on. Not even so that’s a good sign. People should give their love to the film. So everyone one song I wanted changed. Whether it was commercial viability, the song is excited. Sandeep’s storytelling is aesthetics, how they fit the narrative. I a little hatke, so some people take it did not have to ask any changes at all. with open hands, some are reluctant. But at the end of the day the film will And this one was challenging because it’s not a musical romantic film. But work because the emotions are the I’m very happy with the way the album same, the romance is the same what you want to see, the drama, the music has turned out. There are seven songs is super-commercial, so every element and the music lovers will enjoy all of

them. I’m excited about the music especially. Looking at your journey, you have taken T-Series to even greater heights, not just with music, but also superhit movies. So what is the vision ahead for you? Music is definitely our greatest strength. Since the past three years we have tapped more into devotional music and its doing wonderfully well too. We are very happy with the success. So honestly, I want to do a lot more in music. But I want to cut down on the number of films and concentrate more on quality. What was happening was that all directors I know and because of the relations also, we would make all films, big, small. Now we are going to make 7 to 8 films but quality in terms of content and entertainment is going to be even more important. We do have some very brilliant and talented directors on board so we want to keep making even better movies, great movies that are talked about, films that people will love and be entertained. Considering you share such good relations with so many directors, actors, does it become difficult to choose one over another or to say no? See, I am very clear. As a director you bring me the script and most of the time, the director already has a certain actor in mind for that script. It’s not like ‘Oh, but this star’s dates are with us, so let’s take him.’ We will go ahead and get the actor the director wants. I will always back that vision of the director and give him that creative freedom. He knows best who will work for his film. Like for Spirit that we are doing next with Sandeep, he wanted Prabhas and we agreed. Sometimes some

34 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2023

13/12/2023 5:41 PM

actors do tell us too why not them, but then it’s a creative call that was taken, we explain it to them and they also understand it. It’s not about our likeability it’s what the director has envisioned and the character. Like when you see Animal you will not imagine of any other actor playing Ranbir’s character. It’s next level. Tell us more about working with Ranbir… He’s a very talented, a very dedicated actor. There are very few actors jinke baare mein main yeh khulke bol sakta hoon. He’s done a fabulous job. You know actors follow the work hour schedules, with Ranbir you tell him its 8 hours, he’ll do it, you tell him sometimes it’s going to need 12 hours, 21 hours and he’ll still do it with the same passion and energy. He’s a dream to work with. Ask Sandeep, he’ll tell you the same. Ranbir spoils all his directors with the kind of dedication he brings to the table. Then the directors start expecting the same from their other actors too and that doesn’t happen! When we work with other actors, they put restrictions on days, this one is 100 kyun, 120 days le lo. You have never thought of acting or directing? No, never! You can’t do so many things, somewhere that will affect your main stay. I keep telling a lot of my singers too who want to become actors that understand your strengths first. Unless you are not trained, do what you are best at. Like I know I’m good with music, handling the music label, handling relationships with actors, directors, so I know my strengths. And I work towards that. Today if you go to any director even in South now where we are doing films, you tell them it’s T-Series and they are happy, it doesn’t happen with all production houses. So that is the credibility that is growing, that we are working on constantly with every great hit. You are expanding South, going PanIndia in a big way! Yes, there’s Spirit, there’s another film with Sandeep starring Allu Arjun, that one’s going to be big. In the future probably we’ll make Animal 2! That’s amazing. So, what is the secret to the success and longevity? One is moving ahead with time and maintaining relevancy and no compromise on entertainment.

But even more than that it is maintaining relationships. Like after Kabir Singh, Sandeep had offers from almost everyone, like I don’t want to name but all top studios had reached out to him with offers. But he’s doing all his four-five next films with us. He’s like family. So I believe in building that kind of relationship where the director feels that freedom and support to just create what he wants to bring on screen. It’s a relationship for life. So that’s the only mantra, invest in long term relationships and nurture

talents. Give them that respect, have faith in them, their talents and trust their instincts too. Money can’t buy that relation. Nor do they jump ships for money. Highly creative people… they are not money minded, they don’t work for money and that is never the driving factor for them. For them that creative freedom for their vision is what matters more and we give them that. Even Anurag Basu or Luv Ranjan, we are doing many projects with them too. The same goes for our artistes. We want to help them achieve their full potential, reach great creative heights. December 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 35

P L ACES I’M ANIMATED AND EXPRESSIVE. WHETHER IT’S PAIN OR JOY, REACTIONS ARE ALWAYS LARGER THAN LIFE. NOT JUST FOR ME, EITHER. I’LL SCREAM IF IT’S ALSO SOMEONE EL SE’S JOY

Would you have believed it ten years ago if someone told you that you were going to be nominated for an Emmy? No, I would have said, “I hope I’m nominated.” But I wouldn’t have guessed it. However, you are aware that Delhi Crime is an Indian show that has won. It has become much more inclusive. And the International Emmy isn’t just for you; it recognises talent from all over the world in a variety of languages. I’d like to think so. While the series has previously won an Emmy, this time is extra special

because you have been nominated. The first time we were nominated for Delhi Crime, I was a little disappointed that I didn’t even get a nomination because I believe this is my best work. So I didn’t have any expectations this time. I hadn’t even considered it. What has the family’s reaction been? We haven’t celebrated yet because my husband has been away on business. I was sitting at home alone, watching a show, when I found out about it, and my husband and children were both

gone. I dialled my husband Vipul (Shah), my agent, and my sons. I called my best friend. They probably announced it at 8:30. When I saw the phone, there were messages wishing me well and congratulating me. I must have been living under a rock. I had no idea. I’m hoping that my husband and son will consider taking me out. How personal does this international recognition feel to you? It validates my belief in the show, in the character, and in the process by which I created her. People

all over the world can relate to it. They believe she is real, which is significant, and this is the beauty of OTT. It reaches all the way around the world. . I too watch films made in various languages from anywhere. I’m honoured to be nominated on this platform and as an actor, you know you want to win awards. You fantasize about going up on stage and giving a speech. I want to go to the Oscars, the Golden Globes and so on. How would you feel if somehow Shefali Shah and Vartika Chaturvedi

were able to discuss your nomination? I believe she would say, “I’m proud of you.” How closely do you resemble her? Our fundamental values are the same. We have a strong sense of right and wrong, but we can also see another person’s point of view. She enjoys what she does and I enjoy what I do. She is a mother. I’m a mother. When you think of Vartika, you think of strength, but she’s also vulnerable. That’s why she takes everything so personally and goes out of her way to do her best. And

T H E F IR S T T IM E W E W E R E that concludes my contribution. People think I’m a strong woman, despite the fact that I’m a very vulnerable person. But I’m also emotional. Vartika is expressive, but she can also be reserved when necessary. You can’t tell what’s going on in your head a lot of the time. She often wants to scream at her colleague for doing something stupid, but she restrains herself and just gives it a blank stare. So she has different sides to her, which is why she’s so intriguing.

expressive that even when I’m not fighting, everyone around me thinks I’m fighting.

Are you an outgoing person? I’m animated and expressive. Whether it’s pain or joy, reactions are always larger than life. Not just for me, either. I’ll scream if it’s also someone else’s joy. That’s just who I am. And I think my family is starting to accept that this is how she is. On the other hand, she’s the calm Buddha type of person who doesn’t react to anything.

How do you evaluate your own work? I’m critical. I don’t keep track of my work. I’ll watch it when it’s finished. I don’t watch it after that because I know I’ll hate myself.

Do you get easily irritated, or are you usually calm? I’m not easily irritated. I do get angry about certain things. But I’ve learnt to control myself over time. But I’m so

When in your career have you felt the most at ease? My mind is constantly working. It’s extremely inconvenient. As it jumps from one thing to the next, as if it’s out of context. I haven’t been working for a couple of days. I mean, I haven’t done much work. I’ve been doing events and such, as well as some ads and such, but I haven’t been working. I’m going insane.

Is it because you believe you could have performed better? No, I believe I have done my best, but I do not believe it is the best. I gave it my all. I have no doubts about it. I offer it my heart, soul, body, and mind. I only eat, breathe, drink, and sleep that project when I’m working on it. And I’m completely

smitten with that character. But as you watch yourself, you realise you could have done better.

I WA S A L IT T L E D IS A P PO I N T E D

What has been your most significant self-discovery? I’m not sure what I’ve discovered, but I’ve accepted one thing about myself: This is who I am. You can take it or leave it. I am open and animated. I get giddy. I cry and laugh. I speak from my heart. I’m not going to pretend. And now you know where you’re going to eliminate it. Meeting people solely for the purpose of being in the news. You must be photographed. I’ve started getting rid of things. Every time I step in front of the camera, I feel the same nervousness, anxiety and pressure as the first time.

B E L IE V E T H IS IS M Y B E S T W O R K

What advice would you give to your younger self today? I wish I could concentrate better. I just kept working. I got work and did it if I liked it. I never went up to anyone. I didn’t have an agent. I didn’t have anyone to help me. One thing led to another, and as I previously

stated, I played an older character early on because, after all, that’s what actors do—we play characters that are different from us. But that slotted me in a certain way. I wish I had someone to help me through this. I wish I was as focused on what I want and how I will get it as today’s generation is. For the longest time, I had no idea this was my profession. I suddenly realised one day that I do this every day. So this has to be my job. Would you change anything about yourself if you could? Perhaps it was wrong of me to play an older woman so early in my career. It took me the longest to be considered a lead, a prominent part of a film, or a parallel lead. I was reading the synopsis of a film recently offered to me by a female filmmaker. And I

was supposed to play a 40-year-old’s mother. And I was like, “You know my age. You’re not a typical director. How can you come to me with such an offer?” I don’t want to be 17, nor do I want to be 20 years old. Yes, but you can now give me parts ranging from 40 to 50. My sons are 20 years old. Have directors stopped approaching you with scripts that don’t do your craft justice? The problem is that I’ve always looked at a certain level. When I say a certain level, I’m not trying to ride high and proclaim, “Oh, my level is very high.” I’m just saying that my level is what I’m naturally drawn to. Last year was a particularly hectic year for me because in all of my projects, I played the parallel lead. This has been a slow year so far. According to Vipul, no one will come to me with something trivial anymore. I’d like to believe that. 

A life less

ordinary Vikrant Massey has won hearts portraying an IPS aspirant in 12th Fail. He tells Suman Sharma that it was one of the most ‘real’ roles of his career Vikrant Massey played the lead role in the recently released 12th Fail. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is based on the novel of the same name by Anurag Pathak. The book is inspired by the reallife stories of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and his wife IRS Officer Shraddha Joshi. Vikrant plays a young man belonging to the economically backward section of the society who doesn’t give up on his dream of becoming an IPS officer despite seemingly insurmountable odds. The actor’s performance is as real as it gets and that’s kind of become his hallmark in every film. He knows how to play the everyman convincingly and makes you root for his characters. The dependable actor insists he doesn’t have a process in place and just goes with the flow…

12TH FAIL IS ADAPTED FROM A POPULAR BOOK. DID YOU READ IT BEFORE PREPARING FOR YOUR ROLE?

Yes, I did. Though I haven’t lived that life myself, I know about the lives of aspiring candidates who’re preparing for civil services exams. And then, when you’ve got someone like Vidhu Vinod Chopra sir, who’s directing you after a gap of three years, there is an added responsibility.

INTERVIEW

12th Fail

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU GOT TO KNOW THAT YOU WERE WORKING WITH VIDHU VINOD CHOPRA?

When I first got the call, I was told he’s only producing the film. And that my name was recommended to him by Raju Hirani sir. He told me to read the book at our first meeting. And when we met again, he asked me about my input. That’s when he told me he’d also be directing the film. I’ve always enjoyed his movies. Parinda, 1942: A Love Story—they’re some of my favourites. I’ve grown up watching his films and it was a golden opportunity for me to be directed by a veteran like him.

TELL US ABOUT HIS STYLE OF WORKING.

His process fitted me like a glove. He loves extensive readings and rehearsals. If you see the film, you’ll notice it has so many long shots, like a play, as everything has been rehearsed so extensively. Then, none of the actors wore any makeup. It all brought a naturalness to the proceedings.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE PLAYING THE CENTRAL CHARACTER IN A FILM?

For me, the challenge has always been to justify my character. I had to unlearn being an actor and revert back to my student self. I had to look like students who are going to these coaching classes for competitive exams. I had to think like them and match their mentality. I was fortunate that I got to meet so many of them, and they even took me to their apartments, which allowed me to see how they lived. They allowed me to peek inside their minds. They told me their stories, their fears and their aspirations. I come from a privileged sort of life, but that wasn’t the case with them. Spending time with them certainly helped me prepare for the role.

YOU ALWAYS PLAY THE COMMON MAN, BE IT A DEATH IN THE GUNJ OR CHHAPAAK.

I believe that cinema is an incredible medium. And here I am with the privilege of having my film reach out to 100 crore people. And I want to be their voice. I want to represent the common man. I come from a middle-class background. And I know what people in that particular social and economic strata go through. I have also seen abject poverty. 80 percent of the people in our country belong to that social and economic strata. If I can utilise this privilege and position to represent the voice of the common man, why not?

HAVE YOU EVER FELT THAT YOU HAVE HAD TO STRUGGLE TO GET ROLES?

Not at all. I have never faced that. I think our filmmaking community is absolutely meritbased. If you are doing your work well, with passion and honesty, then people will give you recognition. Yes, there are filmmakers I really want to work with. I still have dreams of working with so many of

them. I know that for them to give me a chunk of their time, I need to deliver certain things, which I haven’t yet. For example, if I deliver consistently at the box-office, which I hope I do, then maybe I will be able to work with some of the directors I want to work with. But am I not working with good directors and writers already? I am. So, I am really happy with my reality.

CAN YOU NAME SOME OF THE DIRECTORS WHO ARE ON YOUR WISH LIST?

I want to work with Imtiaz Ali, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowariker, and Ajitpal Singh. I want to work with so many of them. These guys are fabulous.

DO YOU GET FRUSTRATED WHEN GOOD ROLES DON’T COME YOUR WAY?

With Sheetal Thakur

You need emotional anchors. My wife, Sheetal (Thakur), has been my pillar of support for the past decade. She has contributed immensely to my growth DO YOU HAVE A SET PROCESS IN PLACE?

There is no such process or method. Every character demands something Not frustrated. Frustration is the end of it all. You feel why different. For people to resonate with me, it needs to is it not happening. As I said, be real. I cannot put up with if I have to work with certain directors, which I really aspire a certain thing that does to, I need to be consistent. And not come naturally to me. My characters are real and if I am not consistent, then grounded. I’m not a trained it will be a problem. Every actor. I base everything on challenge is an opportunity, observation. And if people whether you embrace it or leave it. Don’t complain about resonate with the characters it. Whatever challenges I have I play and feel they see themselves on screen, then faced, I have looked at them I’ve done my job. as opportunities. There are some films that make you really feel, “Oh, I think this is IS THERE A ROLE THAT a great script.” But that script AFFECTED YOU DEEPLY AND does not translate into a good STAYED WITH YOU FOR A LONG film, for whatever reason. You TIME? really cannot hold on to that. The character of Manoj The idea is to restart. The idea is to evolve as sir would come and cheer an actor and as a person. You know, what I do in front of the me up. He would keep his hands on my shoulders and camera is just a small part of me. Naseer sir in Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi or Manoj Pahwa sir in Dil Dhadakne Do, when you get an opportunity to see how they approach a scene, it helps you grow as an actor. Everyone has a different process. And working with them, you have to adapt to each of their processes, and that definitely moulds you into a better version of yourself.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE SUPPORT OF YOUR LOVED ONES AND FAMILY FOR AN ACTOR?

You need emotional anchors. My wife, Sheetal (Thakur), has been my pillar of support for the past decade. She has contributed immensely to my growth. There was a time when, after leaving television, I found that my savings were drying up. She helped me financially during that transition period from TV to film. And it’s not just the money, to have someone who believes in you and who loves you unconditionally goes a long way towards stabilising you both as an actor and as a person.

WHAT ARE THE NEW THINGS YOU WANT TO EXPLORE IN LIFE?

I want to explore Scandinavia. I had promised my wife I’d take her there, but I have not been able to find the time. I’ll surely take her there next summer, as that’s the best time to be there. n

MASTER

STORY-TELLER! R Balki

RENOWNED FILMMAKER R BALKI IN CONVERSATION WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE TALKS ABOUT HITTING THE BALL OUT OF THE PARK WITH GHOOMER

One of the most prolific filmmakers and celebrated directors of the Hindi film industry, R Balki has given Indian cinema some of the finest movies. And while each of his films have been extremely different from each other, a common thread that connects them all is the indomitable spirit of its characters and tapping the most inpsiring themes without being preachy or resorting to the OTT dramatics! The filmmaker’s most recent release Ghoomer is no different in that. The film starring Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher has garnered immense love and high praise first in theatres and then on its OTT release on ZEE5 Global. Here we talk to the acclaimed director about his process of the craft and he also reveals his penchant for finding humour in the darkest of situations and making audience smile through their tears. Excerpts Ghoomer recently released on ZEE5 Global, was the headspace any different during its OTT release than it was during the film’s theatrical release? Whenever you’re showing a film to somebody, even if it’s one person, there’s a certain excitement. So when you’re showing it globally to millions across through ZEE5 Global, that excitement multiplies that many times. You want to see the reactions of the people. And because it’s such a universal film, I expect a lot more people to see it. It’s one true family film and also it’s the cricket season. And I hate to say this, but there

are only a few people in India who still would like to watch things other than cricket. Saiyami (Kher) revealed that you are a huge cricket buff yourself! Yeah, cricket buff would be an understatement. I love the sport. But the film is not only for the sport fans, it’s so much more than just cricket! Yes, that is true. There’s a lot more to the film than just cricket and a lot of people who are not cricket fans or don’t even know anything about the game, have seen it and enjoyed the film for a lot of things other than cricket. Its essentially the story

of two people. It’s a story of overcoming challenges and human spirit. Cricket is just a backdrop. It is more about, you know, being strong, optimism shining. It’s actually on some level an unsympathetic film, you know, because empathy weakens. That’s interesting. For a filmmaker, if the casting is right, its almost like half the job done and it looked like the role is tailor made for Saiyami Kher! 90 per cent of your work is done, not just half! So, yes Saiyami was the perfect choice for the character, especially since she does play the sport brilliantly. So when you have an actor

44 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2023

44-45-FFME- DEC 2023- BALKI.indd 44

11/12/2023 10:01 PM

make them act. And when they are brilliant performers, then just tune it a little bit.

who plays cricket so well, it’s a blessing considering there are no cricketing actors in our country. So we were fortunate to have her, because in India, like I keep saying you can get people to act, but you can’t get the cricket! There are cricket fanatics who would be watching it, so the sport had to be authentic. And secondly I feel that despite the kind of pain that an actor who is doing this role had to go through, you know holding up the hand all through the film and actually bowl with your wrong arm, that was plysically challenging. It’s action and choreography, almost like a dance bowling. So she is playing it for real? Yes, we didn’t want to cheat on the camera. Like bowl something and then cut to hitting the wicket. So I really have Saiyami play it in one shot like the actual cricket. She was actually playing LIVE with professional cricketers and we were shooting with 18 broadcast cameras. There were no actors on the field. She was the only actor. The other 24 people were all actual cricketers. The level of cricket was very high and she had to train for the dance and bowl, which none of them could do, only she could do, because she trained for that action. So it was excruciating for anybody to have done it. And you needed somebody very, very passionate about the game as well as cool to do it. And Saiyami was perfect! As is Abhishek Bachchan… Ghoomer will certainly be counted amongst one of his finest performances too… Yes, absolutely. I can’t see many other people doing this role. It required the actor to reflect a deep internal pain, an internal angst which is not constructive. And this character Paddy, he’s a cynic. A frustrated person, but he’s always got this smile on his face and has this wry sense of humour about his own failures and successes and

44-45-FFME- DEC 2023- BALKI.indd 45

From ad films to feature films, as a filmmaker has the path eased out or has it become more difficult because now there are expectations as against the initial struggle of getting a everything. Also Abhishek film made? had an interesting take on I don’t know. It’s always playing an alcoholic. You been the same. I mean, know the iconic alcoholic I’ve never made a film in Bollywood is Amitabh that everybody is going to Bachchan. But if Abhishek come to the table and say, Bachchan had to play ‘God, this would be the it, he had to play it very biggest!’ It’s always been, differently and he came up ‘Hey, this is interesting. I with an insight. That is, most don’t know what’s going to alcoholics behave drunkenly happen with it, but let’s do when they’re sober and it.’ You’re not designing it they’re actually very sober so that you know it works. when they get drunk. So You can’t know that. But that really became very you know what you want interesting. So I can’t think of to make. So I just believe I casting anybody other than have been lucky so far. So these two for this particular most of my films have kind film. of at least not caused loss to people and it’s kind of Cheeni Kum, to Paa, to earned me the right to do Shamitabh and now a the next film. So I think cameo in Ghoomer… Tell that’s making movies. I us something about your don’t think it’s any difficult fixation with the senior or any tougher or any easier Bachchan! than what it was before. It’s Fixation would be a wrong always been the same. You word. I’m a huge fan of Mr don’t know what’s going to Amitabh Bachchan like all happen. But you come to of us are. I’ve just had the a point and say now this opportunity to work with is what I want to do. So him a little more and he’s fundamentally that’s all been kind enough to do we can do as filmmakers, all the roles and cameos and if your feeling matches whenever possible. So I just the feeling of the public, feel that it’s a relationship then it so-called works. If of a fan and an actor, and the feeling doesn’t match the actor is being indulgent the feeling of the public, it towards his fan. doesn’t work. And your equation with Abhishek? Abhishek is actually a friend, a very, very dear friend, and we’ve always been that. And I appreciate him as an actor. He’s one of the most modern actors that we have, very understated. He’s got a deep intensity and he’s very real, not not over the top at all. In fact, it’s difficult for him to be over the top. Do you feel the pressure of expectations and doing justice to that caliber of actors each time like the way you have been doing? My job as a director is simple. Get the right guys,

But there’s more faith in a filmmaker once you have proven yourself time and again? I don’t think you can kind of rest on what you did earlier. And whether its my production or anyone else’s, it’s just a kind of a responsibility to make sure the person doesn’t lose. I really have no control over how much the producer is going to get, but I have the control over trying that they don’t lose the money either. As a filmmaker you have explored very serious topics, but they’ve always

been peppered with humour and you make people smile through their tears! It’s all about the way you look at life. I write like that. I think we get too serious about life. A lot of people do get upset even in real life for that. Everything is a matter of life and death, but I just feel that there needs to be a lighter look at life because I always look at one thing. You can just stop breathing at any point and everything looks so silly in comparison then. I mean, we’re not even enjoying ourselves. There are all these layers and layers and layers of complexities in our lives, and we don’t know how to have fun. I really feel it’s about just laughing at your own stupidity. A lot of times that’s what I do. I think I laugh at my own stupidity rather than anybody else’s writing. All your stories are so different from each other. So where do you get all the inspiration from? I don’t really draw inspiration. It’s like okay, now I feel like making another movie. Then I sit and think of some ideas. If it’s something that excites me and I think I need to do it, then I go ahead. What I do look for is that it should be a story that has not been seen. Atleast to the best of my knowledge. I don’t know whether anything can be really original, but I just feel it. I see a lot. I read a lot, I watch a lot. So if it’s not been seen somewhere before, I’m happy.

I’VE NEVER MADE A FILM THAT EVERYBODY IS GOING TO COME TO THE TABLE AND SAY, ‘GOD, THIS WOULD BE THE BIGGEST OR THE GREATEST!’ IT’S ALWAYS BEEN, ‘HEY, THIS IS INTERESTING. I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN WITH IT, BUT LET’S DO IT’.

Manoj Bajpayee has done it again. The

Family Man star known for his powerpacked performances has once again hit bullseye on the OTT with his ZEE5 Global release Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai. Playing a righteous and an honest lawyer who takes on a self-proclaimed Godman accused of raping minors, Bajpayee delivers one of his finest performances and has since been garnering both acclaim and awards for it. We caught up with the actor par excellence for an exclusive interview and in this candid tete

a tete, Bajpayee talks about his penchant for challenging characters and roles that keep him on his toes! SIRF EK BANDA KAAFI HAI WAS A VERY POWERFUL STATEMENT IN ITS OWN RIGHT AND SAW YOU PLAY A VERY STRONG CHARACTER. SO, WHAT MADE YOU SAY A YES TO THIS PROJECT IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Yes, it is powerful because of the story that it is talking about, even though the character himself is not that intense. He’s a regular, ordinary lawyer from a small town. And the case that falls into his lap, he himself doesn’t realise that it is going to give him so much of a glory and that he is going to become an inspiration for the rest of the society. So, he’s a very regular guy who is doing his practice as a lawyer and he’s a father of a little child, he has a son

I get drawn to the kind of characters which are challenging to work on, the characters which don’t let you sleep and also keep you nervous about the next day. Those are the roles, which really don’t let you be easy at all in your career and keep you on toes. And this is what I have been doing and this is what has really paid off many times for me.

and an old mother. So he’s just going about his life and then when he gets the case, he starts taking all the inspiration from the girl who’s the victim here and that’s the journey of this lawyer, that victim and how they accomplish the most difficult case. So, to be honest, it was a yes from me right at the concept of the project.

BUT THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE BEAUTY OF YOUR TALENT… YOU HAVE ALWAYS BROUGHT IN A LOT OF DEPTH AND WEIGHT TO THE MOST REGULAR AND SIMPLE CHARACTERS THAT YOU HAVE PLAYED.

Thank you very much. We work very hard. Sometimes we really go through sleepless nights when we are shooting. But yes, in the end if everything falls in

place, we are the happiest people. Once you do your best, then it goes in the court of the audience. They have to decide and give a verdict about it and if they like it then it feels like a job well done.

it goes on like this. And it has also kind of given jobs and opportunities to so many people. Actors like me have been quite busy. INTERVIEW THE INDUSTRY. WHAT CONTINUES TO BE YOUR SOURCE OF STRENGTH?

See it’s easy. You choose the kind of characters and you choose those films which have never been seen and experienced by the audience. Something which is new and not many people know about it! I get drawn to the kind of characters which are challenging to work on, the characters which don’t let you sleep and also keep you nervous about the next day. Those are the roles, which really don’t let you be easy at all in your career and keep you on toes. And this is what I have been doing and this is what has really paid off many times for me.

IF THERE WAS ONE ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE YOURSELF WHEN YOU STARTED OFF, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would say, stay calm, things are going to work out!

WITH YOUR IMPRESSIVE REPERTOIRE OF WORK, WHICH FILM ARE YOU MOST WAITING TO

SHOW YOUR DAUGHTER OR HAVE SHOWN ALREADY?

Abhi toh… most of the work that I have done before The Family Man, people below 18 cannot watch. After The Family Man, my fan following has increased, it has really included 12 year olds and above. Now those children come to me, they want to take photographs, autographs and they have so many things to say about my performance. So that’s a heartening thing that has happened in my career. My daughter has also seen it, and she is going to watch Ek Bandaa… and she has watched Gulmohar too.

SO ON ONE HAND YOU’RE DOING A MOVIE LIKE SIRF EK BANDAA KAAFI HAI AND THERE ALSO MOVIES THAT YOU DO LIKE BAAGHI 2 OR SATYAMEV JAYATE WHICH ARE FULL ON COMMERCIAL MASALA FARE...

And both of them are blockbusters, can you believe it! And I choose them very carefully. Also I do these pot-boilers mostly to be with friends or because it’s a friends request who’s a director or a friend who’s a big producer like Nikkhil Advani or Ahmed Khan, they are very good friends for many years. And when they want me in a project and they are very insistent about it, I just give in and I just go with them with their belief and conviction and just show up on the set with all my energy and respect for them. And it all works out.

BUT HAS IT EVER HAPPENED THAT YOU ARE KIND OF STUCK BECAUSE OF THIS?

Not because of

this, but yes in my career, I was stuck sometimes because of the choice of my films. I don’t want to name them. I just feel that my judgement or my reading was wrong probably. But it’s alright. That’s how the life is and that’s how the career is going to be. You are never going to be completely 100 per cent correct about the films that you pick or the choices you make.

A RECIPIENT OF THE PADMA SHRI, THREE NATIONAL AWARDS, AND SO MANY FILMFARE AWARDS TOO AMONGST OTHERS. IS IT EASY TO NOT HAVE THE PRESSURE OF EXPECTATIONS AND JUST DELIVER OUT THERE AS AN ACTOR?

Yes, I know what you’re saying, it’s very difficult to shrug off all of those things but I’m born like that. It comes very easy to me, because I’m someone who really doesn’t think much about what I have done. I’m not someone who believes in basking in the past glory nor do I get bogged down by the miserable situations that I was in long past. I don’t think about it. I keep moving, I am always looking for the next challenge, next great role, always looking for the next day and what it holds for me.

WHAT HAS CHANGED ABOUT YOU FROM MANOJ BAJPAYEE TODAY VS MANOJ BAJPAYEE WHO HAD STARTED OFF ALMOST 30 YEARS AGO?

In a way, you don’t change. The essence of you always remains the same but you know, you keep adjusting in life. You keep learning certain things, gain experience and keep acquiring knowledge. So you tweak certain things about your personality. This is what you do, it’s what I do, everyone does.

THE MUSIC Trivedi Amit MAVERICK MUSICAL MAVEN AMIT TRIVEDI TALKS ABOUT BEING FEARLESS, HIS CLUTTER-BREAKING AZAD MUSIC REVOLUTIONIZING SOUND, AND HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES IN A CANDID CHAT WITH AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE

F

earless, Azad, Kind… Musical genius Amit Trivedi replies when I ask him to describe himself in three words… These words also define his music that has always proven to be clutter breaking and yet has hit home every single time with music lovers. From his cult music for films like Dev D, Wake Up Sid, Aisha, English Vinglish, Kai Po Che, Lootera, Queen Highway, Manmarziyaan, Udta Punjab, Andhadhun, Qala to series like Jubilee… to name just a few from his massive repertoire of acclaimed songs and movie albums, the music maestro has been consistent in churning out one hit number after another. I met the talented musician in Dubai where he launched his recent club songs, absolute party bangers so to say. And in a fun conversation, we talked all about his passion for music, as AT reveals what makes him truly fearless and Azad, just like his music!

49-51 -FFME- DEC 2023- AMIT TRIVEDI.indd 49

Your YouTube channel AT Azad defines the kind of music that you’ve been presenting, which is unique and clutter-breaking. But how would you describe your music? Exactly the same. It is Azad, free, doing whatever comes to my mind… Bas dimag me aaya aur just gaaya. Is the creative process for independent music more enjoyable than creating music for movies as the films come with largely definite and specific requirements… Not really. Both are beautiful processes and equally enjoyable. I really like creating music for films. Yes, it’s very different from Indie music, and they both have different expressions too, but I like both. Mazaa dono mein aata hai, so films or series ki ek alag khasiyat hai. Especially when you work with films or projects like Jubilee, Qala, Dev D, Manmarziyaan, Kedarnath, Andhadhun, Lootera, Fitoor... When you work in films like these, you are happy and very creatively satisfied. Can’t name them all, but there are

many more projects that I have enjoyed working on immensely. When you have a tune in your head, how do you decide if you want to give it away for a movie or want to keep it for your album? Is there a bias? That bias has started more recently (laughs). But no, I don’t do that because it’s more of an organic process. It’s like tailors. When you get a fabric, the requirement, size, etc, then you design and stitch accordingly. This year marks your 15 years in Bollywood, and workwise, it’s been 16-17 years… From the time you got into music, when did you feel like ‘OKAY, I’ve arrived!’ I have still not felt that way. It’s a God’s Gift that I’ve got. God has gifted me something so beautiful and I know that my purpose would be to spread it around the world. That’s my job. Me, making it big or becoming rich or famous is December 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 49

INTERVIEW

not a criteria for me at all. It’s the job in hand, it’s a gift of God which I cherish and thank and be grateful to. I just keep doing my job and I’ll keep doing it. I enjoy doing this. The music you have given us is extremely versatile, almost like two opposite ends of the spectrum. Like there is Dev D and Qala… Which one comes easier to you, and which is the kind that you enjoy, and is more creatively satisfying? More artistic or thoda commercial? Commercial type ka music thoda nahi hota hai, bahut hota hai aajkal (laughs). That space, the mindset is different. The ones who make projects like Dev D or Qala or Jubilee, they have a different thought process and I share a strong resonating connection with them. On the other hand, there are others with a hardcore commercial requirement, ki popular music banana hai, hit music banana hai… So sometimes it’s very tough to get that right sweet spot. According to you, what is successful music? Today a song is considered a hit if reels are made on it, or it gets a certain number of views on the YouTube… These are all temporary things. They are trending today, after 2 months you may not remember or recall them. But if the song stands the test of time… 10 years old, 15 years old and they are still enjoying active listenership, that’s the biggest parameter for any artiste. Being relevant,

evergreen generation after generation. When we perform in the shows, and we play our old song and see 10,000 people singing along, that’s the parameter that I judge by. Personally, there’s so much feedback on social media, so it’s a direct connection with my fans and these are the most important ways to gauge the success of your work. Do you ever pause and think about how you have kind of revolutionized music in the industry? No, I really don’t. I’m just very honestly going about and doing my job. For Dev D, the requirement of the film was on the paper. I was just true to that genre of that story, of that subject, that world that I was asked to dwell into.

Similarly, with Qala. We do our best, but nobody can predict the outcome. So there is no thought of wanting to create clutterbreaking music, the idea is to be as honest, sincere and true to the requirement as possible. We’re just doing whatever job is in hand with full honesty and with more than my 100 per cent.

(laughs)!

Just heard your newest song Jhoome Nain. It’s a complete club number and very catchy… so a club anthem at hand? I’m hoping. We always want that it resonates well with the audience.

What was the last song that you heard? My wife played AR Rahman Sir’s Khwaja Mere Khwaja, so yes that one.

Have you ever used your music to impress girls? Maybe (laughs). They do get impressed, even if that’s not the intention… that has happened

Any artiste that you are looking forward to collaborating with globally? I love Dua Lipa’s voice texture as an artiste. It’s too good. I would like to work with her, collaborate with her. I don’t know how, but I mean the world is an open playground, so maybe!

Who’s been your inspiration? AR Rahman Sir, many other artists globally, but AR Rahman sir any day. Any particular actor or director that you really want to collaborate with?

YOU HAVE TO BE FEARLESS. YOU HAVE TO PUT EVERYTHING ASIDE AND JUST PLAY ON YOUR FRONT FOOT AND KEEP GOING. LIKE IF I’M TRIPPING ON SOMETHING I WILL DO IT NO MATTER WHAT. WHATEVER THE RESULT, WHATEVER ANYBODY FEELS, IT’S OKAY.

No, I go with the flow, whatever comes… I just go along. Are you very critical of your own songs? Like will you put your own songs on a loop and hear it? I hear it on a loop while creating it, but once it’s done, there’s no strength to hear it on a loop (laughs). If your life had a theme song from one of your own songs, which one would it be? It depends on the situation. Sometimes it’s ‘Zinda… Mujhe chhod do mere haal pe’, sometimes

it’s ‘Love you Zindagi’, sometimes it’s ‘Shubhaarambh’. Top songs of your latest album? Jhoome Nain, Puttha Paasa... How do you look at the overall scenario right now because anyone who has a platform seems to be a musician? Yes, that’s true. This new world that we are in of social media, it has given us a lot of opportunities, a lot of people could showcase their talent, put out music. Some are genuinely talented; some are real talents who were hidden somewhere and are now getting an opportunity. Now they have an outlet. If you’re good, you will shine. So, it’s a great thing. Yes there’s a lot of clutter too, but

that’s the process, there are no fixed parameters that something will work or not. But if it’s good, they will shine. Arijit Singh is a shining star, Sunidhi Chauhan is a shining star. Three words that best describe you. Fearless, azad, kind. Where do you draw that strength of being so fearless? Because when you came in the industry, you came with how you define your music… You have to be fearless. You have to put everything aside and just play on your front foot and keep going. Like if I’m tripping on something I will do it no matter what. Whatever the result, whatever anybody feels, it’s okay. December 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 51

MANOJ BAJPAYEE TR ULY PROVES THAT SIR F E K BANDAA KAAFI HAI There are stars and then there are actors! And while the stars ruled the Bollywood roost, the OTT space belonged to one of the finest actors of the industry - Manoj Bajpayee who proved that when it comes to actor-power, he is the one leading the pack! The powerhouse performer won our hearts in ZEE5 Global’s Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai nailing his role as a righteous lawyer taking on a self-proclaimed Godman accused of raping a minor. His subtle nuances, sensitive handling of the character and exceptional performance is what acting institutions across would perhaps make their students study as part of their acting courses. The actor rightfully garnered acclaim and is already collecting awards for this one.

BOX OFFICE CINEMAT IC TR E ATS

The Box Office had a commendable mix of masala action fare, romantic heart-winners and content oriented cinema and it was a delight to see all do equally well. While the big-budgeted Animal, Gadar 2, Jawan, Pathaan, Tiger 3, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani set the cash registers ringing, Satyaprem Ki Katha, OMG 2, Ghoomer, Farrey and the sleeper hits The Kerala Story, 12th Fail claimed their own spots as mustwatch movies. OTT

AAKANKSHA NAVAL-SHETYE TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THE YEAR THAT WAS AND LISTS 10 OF THE BEST HINDI WEB-SERIES THAT WERE NOT TO BE MISSED

RICH AND IMPACTFUL CONTENT TOPPED WITH POWER-PACKED PERFORMANCES CONTINUED ITS REIGN ON THE OTT PLATFORMS, BUT WHAT MADE 2023 STAND OUT PARTICULARLY WAS THE INFLUX OF SEVERAL BOLLYWOOD STARS WHO MADE RATHER SUCCESSFUL OTT DEBUTS AND DOMINATED THE SPACE WITH THEIR PERFORMANCES RATHER THAN MERE STAR POWER! FROM SHAHID KAPOOR TO SONAKSHI SINHA, AND RANA DAGGUBATI TO DULQUER SALMAAN, AMONGST SOME OF THEM. AND AS THE YEAR COMES TO AN END, WE TAKE A LOOK AT 10 WEB-SERIES THAT ARE EASILY AMONGST THE BEST ON THE OTT WE’VE SEEN THIS YEAR.

JUBI LE E (Prime Video) Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Aditi Rao Hydari, Aparshakti Khurana, Ram Kapoor, Wamiqa Gabbi and Sidhant Gupta, the series tells a tale of ambition, heartbreak, greed, and passion for movies from the reel world of movie moguls, studio honchos, stars, aspiring dreamers, in an epic narrative that keeps you glued to the screens right through the episodes. Recreating the early 50s cinematically, the series was backed by strong performances of its stellar cast. In fact, apart from direction, performances, cinematography and the dialogues, the one segment where Jubilee hits a 10 on 10 is the perfect casting. While Aditi, Prosenjit, make an impact, the breakout stars are Wamiqa and Aparshakti.

DAHAAD (Prime Video) Starring Vijay Varma, Gulshan Devaiah, Sohum Shah and marking the debut of Sonakshi Sinha, this cop thriller directed by Reema Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi is gritty and hard hitting. Veiled under the cat and mouse chase of a psycho serial-killer, the makers explore and stir some very poignant and deep-rooted biases, societal issues as well as gender and caste politics. Topped with some fantastic performances especially by Sonakshi, this would definitely be on my top 5. December 2023 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST 59

THE RAILWAY MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY OF BHOPAL 1984 (Netflix) It will be difficult to find viewers who weren’t scrambling for tissues after watching this gut-wrenching story of a few courageous and brave men who forsake their lives to save many others. Directed by Shiv Rawail and starring R Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu and Babil Khan, the series inspired by true events - when station master Ghulam Dastagir and his team at the Bhopal Junction Railway Station showed immense bravery in trying to rescue the locals on the night of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy - struck a chord with the audience. Notably Babil held his own in the presence of all the stalwarts and proved that his sterling performance in Qala was no flash in the pan.

MADE IN HEAVEN 2 (Prime Video) Sobhita Dhulipala and Arjun Mathur return as best friends and wedding planner duo Tara Khanna and Karan Mehra for season 2 of the hit Amazon series alongwith a praiseworthy ensemble cast with the likes of Mrunal Thakur, Jim Sarbh, Kalki Koechlin, Shashank Arora, Vijay Raaz, Mona Singh, Radhika Apte, amongst others. Once again, like Season 1, the series touches upon a multitude of societal issues that are still relevant. Absolute conversation starters, the series maintains the pace of the first one. My favourites would be Mona Singh’s track as a mother that is so sensitively handled and depicted and also the episode featuring Radhika Apte was beautifully done.

RANA NAIDU (Netflix) This one marking Rana Daggubati’s OTT debut is clearly in the badass thriller zone. Subtly styled and deftly crafted by the directors Karan Anshuman and Suparn Verma, Rana and South superstar Venkatesh have nailed their roles to perfection. A fixer for the rich and the famous Rana struggles maintaining his personal life even as professionally he is the best there is. Must watch for crime thriller fans!

TRIAL BY FIRE (Prime Video) Directed by Prashant Nair, the series - based on the tragic Uphaar fire in Delhi that claimed many innocent lives - belongs to Rajshri Deshpande and Abhay Deol whose performances as the distraught parents Neelam Krishnamoorthy and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy not ready to give up on justice gives you goosebumps moments all through. The anguish and the helplessness along with the grit to not give up the fight for justice all have been brought to the fore by the two actors with aplomb. 60 FILMFARE MIDDLE EAST December 2023

BAMBAI MERI JAAN

(Net f lix)

Directed by Shujaat Saudagar, the period crime thriller stars Kay Kay Menon, Avinash Tiwary, Kritika Kamra, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Amyra Dastur and chronicles the rise of underworld mafia don. Kay Kay Menon as the incorruptible cop going through the anguish of seeing his son go the criminal way is flawless, while Avinash looked the part of the ambitious and calculative kingpin to the T. Nivedita, Kritika and Amyra also deserve a mention with their effortless portrayals.

GUNS & GULAABS

(N et f lix )

This Raj & DK directorial is a kitschy ode to the 90s thrillers. Starring the versatile actor pack – Rajkummar Rao, Gulshan Devaiah, Adarsh Gourav – this one is the OTT debut of the South heartthrob Dulquer Salmaan. The crime thriller is full of romance, violence and dark humour as innocence and greed clash over opium farming. Devaiah will have you smiling even through his baddie act! Rajkummar as the smalltown lover boy, Adarsh as a son taking on the reigns of crime from his father, Dulquer as the righteous cop, all nail it perfectly. If action is your genre, then don’t give this one a miss.

The black comedy crime thriller by the OTT hit director duo of Raj & DK brings together two superstars – Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Sethupathi – alongwith Kay Kay Menon, Amol Palekar, Raashii Khanna and Bhuvan Arora. The series marks Shahid’s debut in the OTT space, while it is Sethupathi’s first in a Hindi series. A disillusioned artist and his best friend turn to counterfeiting money to realise their dreams of earning a quick buck. But things go awry as they get involved with a crime lord who will stop at nothing to get his money’s worth from this golden egg laying goose. Also hot on his chase are Sethupathi and Raashii who want to bust the fake note racket. Amol Palekar as the righteous grandfather and Bhuvan as the bestie steal the show which is already dominated by strong performances from their lead stars. Certainly a dream debut for Shahid as the audience are hooked and we are now awaiting the sequel.

SCOOP (Netflix) Directed by Hansal Mehta and Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul this crime drama is based on crime reporter Jigna Vora’s biographical memoir Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison that tell her story as wrongly accused in the murder of another fellow journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. Exploring the copjournalist equation, politics and the underworld nexus, the series stands out for dynamic performances by the ensemble cast. Karishma Tanna, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and the surprise package Harman Baweja, all are outstanding and play their parts to perfection.
