Awaiting World Premiere
Individuals with disabilities are often identified as a ‘burden’ to their family as well as to the society. The documentary film ‘The Crutches’ is an attempt to capture the journey of seven women with disabilities who all were affected by polio when they were child and fought at each stage of their own lives to gain the respect within their family, get an identity of their own in the society and stand on their own feet. These seven women have been working in Rehabilitation Aids workshop by women with disability (i.e., RAWWD, Bangalore) for more than 20 years. They use crutches and appliances for their mobility and they have trained themselves in making these mobility aids, appliances and supports for others like them i.e., disabled men, women and children. Today, they lend support to many through their contribution to the persons with disabilities in the community. They became socially and financially independent, and gained the respect of their own families and their communities as well.
