Fountain woman celebrates 95th birthday By Barb Jeffers bjeffers@fillmorecountyjournal.com

Alvira Klockeman of Fountain, Minn. celebrated her 95th birthday earlier this month surrounded by family and close friends. Alvira was born on December 6, 1917, to parents Edward and Barbara Klug in Caledonia, Minn., as one of thirteen children born to the Klugs. Being the seventh child of thirteen, Alvira states that she “was supposed to be the seventh son but she fooled them.” Alvira was raised with seven brothers and five sisters making for quite a large family. After marrying Forrest Klockeman in Caledonia in 1945, the couple moved to Wykoff, Minn. After living in Wykoff Alivira Klockeman celebrated with family at the Branding Iron a few years, the Klockemans in Preston. made their home in Fountain, Photo by Barb Jeffers Minn. in 1950. Top stories of 2012 By Jade Sexton jsexton@fillmorecountyjournal.com

As 2012 draws to a close, it is normal to look back on the year and all that has happened. The Fillmore County Journal has covered hundred of stories; from government happenings to new businesses, to interesting people, as well as happy stories, controversies, and shocking events. Frac mining The topic that was most talked about, written about, and argued about was the frac mining debate. Letters to the editor came in throughout the year, and it was discussed at city

council and county board meetings. Emotions ran high as protestors held up signs at meeting locations showing their disapproval or concern, trying to get local government to impose restrictions and do more studies. Citizens wondered how frac mining would affect their town. Would it have a negative impact on tourism? Would the heavy truck traffic ruin the streets? And what about the environmental impact? Many people felt there should be more studies done before allowing the mines, and that there should be limits and regulations. Many others felt the mining would

be perfectly safe, and good for the local economy, as it would create jobs. There was also hope that having mines locally would reduce dependence on foreign oil. The most recent event was in St. Charles, where 906 residents signed a petition to keep a frac mine out of the edge of their town. Rushford-Peterson Referendum Rushford-Peterson Schools held a special election on December 19 asking taxpayers to approve a referendum for up See STORIES Page 11 

rest raised six children, four boys and two girls of their own, but Alvira tended to be a “second mom” to many, always giving her time and attention to children in Fountain. Forrest Klockeman passed away in 1994. Alvira has always kept busy being involved in many organizations over the years including being a cub scout leader, among others. When the church in Fountain closed, Alvira Klockeman was awarded the Medal of Honor from the Bishop for her 50 years of service to the church. Alvira is still an active member in the Legion Auxiliary, card club, and senior citizen study club. Alvira also has a talent for crocheting beautiful doilies and other items. Reading is another favorite pastime for Alvira. When asked about her childhood, Alvira said, “In this day

and age things are so much easier than they used to be.” She explained that her Mother used to collect rain water and heat it on the stove to put in the washing machine to wash clothes. Alvira stated that back then, “Wash day was on Monday and it took all day.” After trying to get her secrets of longevity, Alvira said “cleanliving” and staying busy have helped her reach the age of 95. As for her plans for the future Alvira said, “I live from day to day and hope I’m around the next day,” which are words of wisdom for all of us. Mrs. Klockeman said, “I don’t feel like I’m that old,” which is probably what keeps her so busy. Comment on this article at www.fillmorecountyjournal.com

Preston man charged with shooting By Jade Sexton jsexton@fillmorecountyjournal.com

Friday December 21, 2012, Roger James Bergmann, 39 of Preston, shot a woman at her home in Preston and fled the police. During the pursuit, there were 40 minutes when the police didn’t know where he was, but he was later apprehended in Winona County after a 30-minute standoff. While the police were pursuing Bergmann, Fillmore Central Schools were put on

lockdown as a precaution. The students were released after receiving an all clear from the Sheriff’s Department. The 49-year-old woman was shot in the neck. She was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester and treated for her injuries. After the shooting, Bergmann allegedly called a friend and told him what happened. There was another man at the home, Eric Newman, who witnessed the shooting. He told police Bergmann held a gun to See SHOOTING Page 5 

“Help Our Neighbors” helps senior citizens in the their homes By Barb Jeffers An organization called Help Our Neighbors can be the key to helping Senior Citizens stay in their homes and active in the community by providing services they need to stay independent. The services that the Help Our Neighbors organization assists with make the life of a senior citizen easier and less worrisome. Help Our Neighbors serves the city of Chatfield and the surrounding area including any area serviced by the Chatfield Ambulance Service. Help Our Neighbors’ trained volunteers can assist with many activities. One such activity which is desperately needed this time of year is snow removal. Other times of the year outdoor chores are offered including lawn mowing, raking leaves, washing windows, gardening and gutter cleaning. Transportation services are

offered by Help Our Neighbors which can be in town or out of town trips for appointments, errands, or social events. Light housekeeping, vacuuming, dusting, and laundry services are available from Help Our Neighbors volunteers to help senior citizens with their daily chores in their home. An important service offered by Help Our Neighbors is a Home Safety Check. This service includes a furnace filter check, smoke alarm check, extension cord use, safety practices in kitchens, keeping window blind and drapery cords secured, determining if there is chipping or peeling paint in the home, using safe furniture, and assessing general safety precautions to prevent accidents and injuries. Additionally, Help Our Neighbors offers Caregiver Support services, which can give caretakers a short break

C ommentary Turning the Page By Yvonne Nyenhuis “So quickly yesterdays become tomorrows memories!” It was 1964. Glenn’s family in Minneapolis tidied up the vestiges of Christmas, packed their suitcases into two cars and headed across the country to Pennsylvania, where Glenn and Yvonne I were being Nyenhuis married. The group included Glenn’s Mom and Dad, his brother Rodney and his wife Julie, his brother Jerry and his wife Grace and their little girl (not yet two) and Glenn’s youngest brother, Keith. No sooner had they crossed the Mississippi River than a winter storm overtook them. As the miles fell away, the blizzard showed no signs of abating. They were encompassed in a

swirling white veil, severely limiting visibility and challenged by the icy roads. During a pit stop they discussed turning back, but by this time they were halfway to their destination and clearly committed. Besides, Nyenhuises never give up. It’s not in their DNA! They kept on doggedly and in time were rewarded. The snow diminished once they got through the mountains of western Pennsylvania. When they arrived at the suburbs north of Philadelphia, they found the area was experiencing unseasonably warm weather. The scenery transitioned from white to lawns of green grass. They were greeted with hugs and jubilation as my family crowded around them and whisked them off to meet their prospective hosts and get them settled in their new digs. They wended their way through the hilly countryside with fields and woods past farm houses built of brownstone in the 1700s when

One Moment, Please... Is 2013 just another year? By Jason Sethre Publisher Fillmore County Journal & Olmsted County Journal Cell: 507-251-5297 jason@fillmorecountyjournal.com As we close out 2012, we can’t help but start thinking ahead to 2013. And with this thought comes a flurry of possibilities. For Christmas this year, Santa left for me a book by Jason Sethre my stocking. No, it wasn’t in my stocking, Editorial Cartoon

because it was too big. It was next to my stocking. This book, Steve Jobs by William Isaacson, is well in excess of 600 pages, and will be a good starter book for me in 2013. While I read news stories every day, consuming volumes and volumes of information, I rarely have time to read books. As a matter of fact, I am rather fickle about my reading selection. My wife, daughter and son read books on a regular basis, and they tend to gravitate toward fiction. I, on the other hand, have always taken a liking to non-fiction. I recall back in third or fourth

our country belonged to England. The populace in that area are spread out through a scattering of small towns linked by a labyrinth of country roads, some sixteen feet wide, paved carriage paths. Jerry, Grace and Amy stayed with Glenn in his apartment in Hatboro. The others ended up with friends and family in Huntingdon Valley and Southampton. I was living with my parents in Willow Grove. The church where we were to be married was a Cathedral, high on a hill, in Bryn Athyn. Grace and Julie set aside a day to tour Philadelphia. They took a train into the city where they were met by my friend, Eleanor, who agreed to show them around. They were intrigued by the row houses. In some places the streets were brick or cobblestone. There is much to see: Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the statue of William Penn which looks down on the city from the top of City Hall. New Year’s Eve there was a gathering of the Nyenhuis family at the apartment in Hat-

boro. We had three Birthdays to celebrate; Jerry’s, Amy’s (who became two) and mine. I spent the afternoon in the basement arranging aisle bouquets for the church. I nestled pine cones sprayed white and silver into branches of spruce and pine and tied them with big white silk bows. About five p.m., I was summoned to the phone. I heard the excited voice of my friend, Rosemary. “What are you doing tonight?” she asked. “Well,” I hesitated, “We are celebrating Jerry, Amy’s and my birthday. It’s New Year’s Eve and tomorrow I’m getting married. Outside of that, not much!” “Good,” she rejoined, “then you won’t mind standing up for Ronnie and me. We’re getting married tonight!” Later, I sat in a circle with the Nyenhuises opening gifts. Amy was given a doll carriage and joyfully took off with it, running in the halls. At eight-thirty there was a knock at the door. I slipped into my coat and out into the dark night. Rosemary, Ronnie, his brother Jack, and I

sped through the blackness until we came to a pleasant colonial house. We were welcomed by the warm lights of the home of the Justice of the Peace. There were smiling pleasantries, solemn vows were exchanged, documents were signed and once again we were barreling through the dark. It was quite a distance to my parents home. When we arrived my parents were asleep. I tiptoed up the stairs without turning on a light and crawled under the covers just as guns were going off in the neighborhood. It was midnight, the beginning of a New Year and my Wedding Day! I am seventy-nine today. Tomorrow Glenn and I will be married forty-eight years. We read each other’s thoughts and finish each other’s sentences. We fight and argue. We laugh a lot. It’s been a great adventure. We are thrilled with our three sons and their families, with our home and to be living in Lanesboro, the best place in the world.

grade strolling to the school library every week to pick up copies of the biographies of each U.S. President. I read every biography they had on hand, covering the most notable presidents of our nation. Today, unfortunately, my days are consumed with so many tasks that take me away from long-term commitments such as reading 600-page books. But, in 2013, I’m going to commit myself to reading more books, like I did nearly 30 years ago. I have to say that watching my children take such an interest in reading has guilted (maybe ‘inspired’ is a better word) me into asking myself why I am not doing the same. And, to me, this is what makes a new year somewhat special. What are you going to do in

2013 that you haven’t done yet in your life? Whatever it is, make it a goal. As life moves by pretty quick, I continue to recognize that I don’t get things done if I don’t make them a priority. Maybe this is the year in which you establish your bucket list? And, whatever you decide to do, I think it can be valuable to let others close to you know what expectations or goals you are setting for yourself. Sharing your goals establish-

hes accountability to carry out your lifelong pursuits. Whether it is a vacation to a place you’ve never been, reading more books, running a marathon, or spending less time at work and more time with family, I’m sure we’ll all find something new in 2013.

The purpose of these courses is to help dairy farmers more fully understand and identify the hazards that exist around their farms, and develop plans to make their farms a safer place to

live and work. A final benefit is to help farms meet OSHA standards should they be audited. The two-day short course will address the following topics: •Introduction to OSHA •Injury Trends •Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment •Hazard Communications •Tractors and Farm Machinery •Hazards with Animal Handling •Hazards in Farm Structures •Personal Protective Equipment These topics are common and may not look challenging, but one may be surprised what an audit looks at that is seldom considered in the day to day workings on the farm. During the course, farmers will be developing outlines appropriate for a safety plan to implement on their own farms. Tools will be offered to comply with OSHA standards and more importantly, make the farm safer. The short course in southeast Minnesota will be at the St. Charles Community Center, 830 Whitewater Ave, St. Charles, Minn. on Thursdays January 10 and 17. The course takes both days for completion. We will start at 10:00 a.m. and conclude by 4:00 p.m. Lunch is included in the registration. The cost is $15.00 per person for both days. Registration can be done on line at www.uwrf. edu/CenterForDairyFarmSafety/. You may also call 715-4253240. This is a jointly sponsored program of University of Minnesota Extension, the Center for Dairy Farm Safety, the North Central Risk Management Education Center and a Susan Harwood Training grant.

There was a woman who saw the victim running out of her house holding her neck, which was bleeding, and she helped the woman and called an ambulance. Bergmann allegedly admitted to having shot the woman.

Police allegedly found methamphetamines in Bergmann’s truck and at his residence. He had previously been convicted of domestic assault charges, and the gun and ammunition were found in his truck. Bergmann’s next court appearance will be on December 31, 2012. His bail was set for $500,000 conditional and $1,000,000 unconditional.

Be safe, not sorry, this New Year’s Eve By Barb Jeffers New Year’s Eve is a time when many people like to go out and celebrate with friends which can be a good time, but can lead to a bad time if you are not responsible. Drunk driving kills many people each year, and in order to save lives the Fillmore County Sherriff’s Department and Minnesota State Patrol will have extra patrols on duty the evening of December 31, 2012. Plan ahead and have a friend be a designated driver if you think you may be drinking in excess. Even if a person feels as though he or she is sober enough to drive, the alcohol may be diminishing his or her common sense, so step in if you feel a friend may be attempting to drive under the influence. Daryl Jensen, Fillmore County Sherriff, stated that Fillmore County usually has added patrols out on New Year’s Eve and he “encourages people to arrange a Designated Driver or have family members pick them up” if they get in a bind. Sherriff Jenson also said, “Be sure when you get in a vehicle with someone that they are a sober driver,” which is great advice. According to the website for the Office of Traffic Safety (www. dps.mn.gov), a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, each year in Minnesota over 30,000 people are arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). If your alcohol-concentration level is 0.08 or higher (0.04 in a commercial vehicle) and you are in control of a moving or parked vehicle you can be

Pet of the Week

arrested for DWI. The cost of a DWI is extreme. It could result in the loss of your driver’s license for a period of one year, possibly thousands of dollars in fines and fees, as well as possible jail time. All alcohol-related loss of driving privileges require a reinstatement fee of several hundred dollars, a DWI knowledge test, a driver’s license application with fee, and chemical health assessment. Each person arrested for DWI will face their own unique punishment, depending on the arrest situation, previous driving violations, and their criminal record. The Office of Traffic Safely states on its website that “costs of DWI can be as high as $20,000 when factoring court costs, legal fees and increased insurance premiums.” What cannot be measured is the pain that is endured by so many people when a drunk driver causes the death of others due to his or her negligence. A news release by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, released on December 27, 2012, stated that “motorists are encourage to plan ahead for a sober ride New Year’s Eve as Minnesota attempts to make it five years in a row with no drunk driving traffic deaths during the holiday.” Sherriff Jenson stated, “We hope for another safe New Years Eve this year.” Mother always told us it is better to be safe than sorry…. listen to mom this New Year’s Eve.

Basset HouNd/Beagle MIx My name is Maddie. I have a basset body with beagle legs and face. I know that sounds a little odd, but that’s what makes me so unique. I love children and other animals. My owner loved me very much, but she has parrots and I seemed to be to fascinated by them and tried to hurt them so she had to surrender me. I am very quiet and a little shy sometimes. What happens if I should die when I’m away from home, and my family wants my funeral and burial back in my hometown? I do get asked this question often, and it does occur on occasion. If a person dies while they are on vacation or away visiting friends or relatives, it is always best to have the family call their hometown funeral home first. By doing this, a family would only be paying the professional services portion of the funeral bill to one funeral home instead of two. After the family calls their hometown funeral director, that funeral director can refer to a network of reputable funeral homes in the area that the death occurs for their assistance. In the case of traditional funeral this would typically mean that the funeral home contacted would transfer the deceased to their funeral home and prepare the body for transfer (usually by airlines) to the hometown funeral home. By calling their hometown funeral home, the family will have the comfort and convenience of dealing only with someone who they know and trust.

Does the “fiscal cliff” affect my estate plan?

Brunsvold EntErprisEs

Scott Springer Attorney

Yes! Whenever state or federal tax law changes, you should review your estate plan to insure that it takes complete advantage of your exemption limits and doesn’t cause you to suffer any penalties. Most estate planning documents take into account the transient nature of our estate tax exemption limit, but some estate plans that were tailored for the previous limits may have a number of unnecessary provisions, or, more likely, are lacking necessary provisions, depending upon the size of your estate. Other times when it is advisable to review your estate plan is upon the birth of a child, the death of a spouse, child, or other loved-one, upon marriage or divorce, when you inherit property, if you buy or sell a business, when you retire, if you buy property in another state, or if you move to a new state. Whenever, as now, the estate tax laws change, you should have a knowledgeable attorney review your plan.

TITle TranSferS...

Scott Brunsvold

Once again we need to revisit the issue of how long it takes to transfer a title in the State of Minnesota. Unlike our neighbors, Iowa & Wisconsin, where you go to the court house and walk out with a title, here in Minnesota we got to a Deputy registrar, which is an independent business working as a representative of the state. I am blessed to have one right here in Preston manned by two very knowledgeable people, Kurt reicks & Dawn ristau. If you buy a car from a non-Minnesota dealer or private party in or out of the state, you go see these fine folks to transfer your title, which includes paying sales tax, fee’s license bureau and do this for you. and as of right now you will receive a title in 12-14 weeks. So if you are wondering if the title for the car you bought from me is coming soon, please feel free to call me or the Deputy registrar’s office and we can tell if it has been sent out yet. Merry Christmas & Happy new Year to everyone and let’s look forward to great things in 2013.

What is a Content Management system (CMs)?

Hwy. 16 & 43 • RUSHFORD, MN 507-864-2969

Jason sethre president

As clients are looking for ways to update their websites, we have a variety of requests that we fulfill on a regular basis. Some clients want to be able to enter updates on their website on their own. For this request, we create a Content Management System. With a customized CMS, clients can enter their own information and update their website when it is convenient for them. This keeps their website fresh with changes as needed. Some of our clients prefer that we make changes and updates to their website, and we can fulfill that request as well. Basically, our approach to helping our clients with updates is based on how they would prefer to have it handled. Some clients want complete control and involvement in the updates, and others would prefer to have us make those changes. Just tell us your preference for updates, and we will make it work for you.

tony russel My mechanic says my car needs ball joints. please explain. Ball joints are a part of your vehicle’s suspension that connects the steering knuckles to the control arms. A ball joint is essentially a flexible ball and socket that allows the suspension to move and at the same time the wheels to steer. Cars and trucks without strut suspensions typically have four of them (one upper and one lower on each side). Cars and minivans with strut suspensions have only two (one lower ball joint on each side). Some frontwheel drive cars also have ball joints on the rear suspension. Like any other suspension component, ball joints eventually wear and become loose. Excessive play in the joint can affect wheel alignment and the wear. Loose joints can also cause suspension noise (typically a ‘clunking’ sound when hitting a bump). WARNING: If a ball joint fails, the suspension can collapse causing a loss of control. So don’t put off having a bad set of joints replaced.

Landscape & Garden Trends for 2013 Extending your individual style from the interior to the exterior has become a top landscape priority. From traditional shrubbery and structural lines to vintage accents from repurposed materials, anything goes in the garden to create the same comfort you find in your living room. Containers with an aged look -- patinas, encrustations, crackled finishes are becoming the focal point in gardens. Make room in your landscape this year for texture. Use plants with contrasting colors and foliage to highlight the rustic exterior of your planter. Hydrangea, Ninebark, Weigela, and tried and-true favorites are now available in dwarf sizes to captivate even the smallest of yard. Succulents are all the rage. Use them for tabletop containers, vertical gardens, or drought-tolerant containers. Take it a step further by incorporating creeping succulents into your landscape design. Let’s start planning. © EODL

Steel cans By LaVerne C. Paulson Recycling Education Coordinator Tin cans , as we know them, are not made of tin, but are really made of steel. But then, old habits are hard to break. Tin cans have been around since 1810. Soup, juice, vegetables, meat, coffee, evapo- LaVerne C. rated milk, Paulson sardines, pet food, and pork and beans, are just a few of the canned items we purchase. Perhaps, the second best thing about tin cans is they don’t usually break when you drop them. To a recycler, their finest quality is the fact that they are highly recyclable. The most common recycled

metal product made with iron is the steel food can. These cans are 99 percent steel. They are made of steel for strength, but are coated with tin to stabilize the flavors of the can’s contents. Without this coating, the food in the can would most likely taste of metal. If you remove the label from a can after you have removed the food, you will notice the inside of almost all cans is a different color that the outside. Food is actually cooked in the steel can during the canning process. All steel food and beverage cans are 100 percent recyclable including bi-metal cans, the ones with the steel bodies and the aluminum ends. When a steel can is recycled, it is shredded and run through a series of washing solutions and filtered. Since steel food cans contain both steel and tin, the recycling process (melting and filtering) must separate the

Monday, December 31, 2012 molten tin and steel by “detinning.” This process yields high-grade steel and tin, and new steel cans with a shiny, thin tin coating are produced. The cans with the aluminum ends are also melted and made into new steel. However, the aluminum is not separated from the recycled steel, as is the tin, but actually enhances the process of making new steel cans. Recycled steel is used to build cars, trucks, bridges, trains, train tracks, jets, dumpsters, fences, siding and roofs for buildings, and the nuts and bolts that hold them together. The recycling of steel cans is quite beneficial. It takes 75 percent less energy to recycle steel than to produce steel from iron ore. For every pound of steel recycled, the energy it takes to light a 60 watt light bulb for more than 26 hours is saved. Through recycling, the steel industry saves an average of 600

FILLMORE COUNTY JOURNAL

trillion BTU each year. That is enough energy to electrically power a few more than 18 million homes. You may want to keep one or two of these cans around, perhaps as a cutworm collar to guard your tender tomatoes or a night crawler container just for old time’s sake, but the rest of them should find their way here to the Resource Recovery Center, not the landfill. And if you want to call them tin cans, very few people will be offended. If you call the steel cans, very few people will know what you mean.

This interesting piece of information came across by desk a few days ago. I think this is an appropriate time to share it with you. Minnesota generates 25 percent of its waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. This is perhaps a good time to try to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Thanks for making 2012 a great year of recycling. We have accomplished a lot. I wish you all the best for the coming year as we strive to raise the recycling rate of Fillmore County even more. You do care....and it shows.

to $15 million to build a new building for early childhood through fifth grade. The voters spoke, and their request was denied. Proponents of the referendum stated that the current school is in bad shape, and it would be very costly to fix. They insisted the plan of building in phases would be less costly for taxpayers, and this was the only way to get a new building for the students. One argument was that the district

had not asked for money for a new building for 43 years. Many voters who were against the referendum felt the tax burden would be too great on an already burdened community, still recovering from the flood in 2007. After much discussion, special informational meetings, and many residents who were very passionate about their position on either side, the referendum did not pass. between “Yes” and “No.” The presidential race was also a hot button topic, as people argued over whether or not Barack Obama should be the President for another four years. Locally, the arguments were about constitutional amendments. One was to make marriage between a man and woman only, and the other was to require picture ID for every voter. On each side, emotions ran high, and in the end both of the amendments failed. Local troops return home to loved ones Two veterans were among the

He had been away from his family for 13 months. The separation was difficult for him and his family, and the return home was a major celebration. The same was true for Luke Laganiere of Fountain, who came home to his family, which included his girlfriend, who was expecting their first child. Fundraiser for Jem Theatre a huge success Harmony, along with many other communities in Fillmore County, pulled together to help a small, family-owned movie theatre stay in business. Jem Theatre, run by Michelle Haugerud of Harmony, was forced to switch to a digital projector in 2012, at a cost of around $75,000. The theatre received a lot of help from the

community, as people showed up at a fundraiser held at Wheelers in Harmony in February and helped raise more than $15,000. This, along with other money raised and a loan from the bank, helped them purchase a digital projector and keep the movies going. This article covered several school districts in Fillmore County, and all of the security measures that each one of them has to protect their students. The Working Mom By Tammy Danielson Finding Time Everyone is losing time, in search of time, can’t find time, or can’t find enough time. Oh Father Time, where art thou! I recently heard a speaker at work say we all have enough time but that we simply don’t “make” time. Time can sure get a bashing and usually is the guilty culprit in most really great excuses. Excuses that quickly come to mind are, “Oh, I sure wish I could help, but I don’t have time.” Hmm... that sounds all too familiar and know it has been given to me on occasion. This past year, I fell into the so-called time trap as I thought about if I should go back for more college. There was absolutely no way I could make it work (said the voice in my brain). With a kid in school and

all of my hobbies, that meant I would need to give up a hobby, and how would my homework get done as the dishes and laundry piled up, and how would my family time be jeopardized because of pending homework time needed? Despite all of these good excuses, I started back to school anyway. Amazingly, my family gets along without me on school nights (a good break for all of us?), the laundry is done, the dishes are done, and I am still making jewelry and just picked up a new craft this month! So, if the excuse elf in my head had won out, returning to college would go unfilled on my bucket list. When people ask me, “Where do you find the time to do all of that?” I share that it is easier

to find time to do the things you love. So as we grow in life and find interests that turn into passions, those passions are what we dedicate our time to. Now, if you asked me to add rock climbing or mineral collecting into my schedule, you might get the excuse that I don’t have time for that as I would rather take a sharp stick in the eye than have to use my time for those things. The other way to look at your time allotment is to determine what brings value to your life. You can choose to cut things from your time that don’t bring you a good return or value. For example, I have told my son that I’ve committed to not watching reality TV this next year. After all, do they care about the reality of my life?----probably not since it doesn’t involve designer labels, exotic vacations, or crazy women cat fights. Instead, I buy clearance so I can afford to buy more for my son and more crafting supplies. Our most treasured vacation involves camping all summer with our friends or visiting relatives, and I choose to be around people that enjoy

Page 13

Weddings | Engagements Birthdays | Anniversaries Birth Announcements Special Occasions!

life and have great attitudes--hence, no cat fights. So in light of not wanting to sound preachy, my final thoughts are: 1) If you are not happy and wonder how to find more time to get to that happy point, try looking at the value of the things that are keeping you busy. 2) Value=personal satisfaction. 3) Try to trim the non-essentials, excess, and fluff and do

what makes you happy---find your passion! My friend makes these and simply calls them her oatmeal bars. But when someone else shared them as “Passion Bars,” I knew this recipe needed to be included today. Yum!

Passion Bars

2 cups quick cooking oats 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 cup butter, softened 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 3/4 cup peanut butter 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan. In a large bowl, stir together the oats, flour, brown sugar, salt and baking soda. Cut in the butter to form a crumbly mixture. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of the crumbs, and pat the rest evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. In a medium bowl, stir together the sweetened condensed milk and peanut butter. Spread evenly over the oatmeal layer. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the peanut butter layer, then crumble the reserved crust over the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes in the preheated oven until golden brown. Cool completely before cutting into bars.

Chatfield’s Math Data team helps students make the mark “The Perfect Storm” Chatfield High School’s Seniors hit an all-time high for passing the Math MCA test. With 93 percent of their students passing the test, this far has exceeded any of our expectations, according to High School Principal, Randy Paulson. “Our original goal was to have 75 to 80 percent of our students to pass, but with efforts of our Math Data Team (Dan Conway- Math Instructor, Jeff DeBuhr- Math Instructor, Mitch Lee- Online teacher and also Lindsey Wojtkiewicz- School Counselor, Randy EricksonSchool Psychologist, and Randy Paulson- High School Principal) we far surpassed our goal.” The students worked hard to accomplish this, especially the last group with seven of the eleven students passing the last retake. Mr. Conway commented, “They (Chatfield Seniors) were motivated and worked really hard. I am extremely proud of

them.” Some of the factors that lead up to the success according to Conway: “We took a multifaceted approach where the students worked on improving their general math skills, reviewed and re-learned the actual content, and also practiced test-taking strategies.” Online Teacher Mitch Lee commented on the quality. “When you start with a solid program and fantastic teachers, the road to success is already paved. We have managed to improve upon that formula with our math intervention program that is tailored to finding and shoring up weak points in their personal skill set, or reviewing ideas that may have gathered some rust since last use.” The students were very focused on passing the test, which senior student Kelsey Buss enthusiastically stated, “I made use of

the time in SST (Supervised Study Time) and my own time and I really wanted to pass. Mr. DeBuhr said that I ended up in the top eight percent!” Mr. DeBuhr focused on each individual student to help them succeed. “Students were placed into different levels of interventions based on test scored and teacher recommendations. We attempted to use data to identify the direct needs of each student and address those needs to the

Fillmore County Sports ‘Twas four nights before Christmas...

athlete of the week

By Paul Trende …And within two high school fieldhouses, the Chatfield Gophers squished the Kingsland Knights, like elephants to mouses. Too Much… On the girl’s side of things, it was too much size, too much athleticism, too much depth, and too many scoring options. The size was Chatfield’s 6-footplus duo of MaKenzie Miller and Traci McDonald. They may not have blocked a ton of shots, but they influenced a bunch. Knight players certainly thought twice about testing the Gopher interior length. Miller was also nearly unstoppable inside offensively. The athleticism was (not limited to) Gopher sophomore guard Maddie Talamantes. It was mostly her responsibility to shadow Knight leading scorer, new 1,000-point scorer, Cheyenne Losey. Maddie T Rudophed the Gopher ‘D,’ helping hold Losey to just 7 points (3 of which, came on a back-iron-clank-and-in triple). The athleticism also referred to how quickly Chatfield got out in transition, particularly in the early going. The Gophs were like Santa’s reindeer on Christmas Eve: off and running (flying). They scored on eight of their first eleven possessions, making eight of their first eleven shots. The run built a 17-5 lead that would balloon to 28-10 at one point in the 1st half. The depth referred to the 12 Gopher gals who typically can, and do, see action amidst a contest. That meant bench support; sophomore forward Brook Irish had 5 points and 7 rebounds in the 1st half, junior forward Morgan Henry 9 points in the 2nd. All told, the Gophs got 24

points from their bench, or double that of Kingsland (12). They came at the Knights like a whirlwind blizzard, blowing in from every direction. The Knights crawled back into the contest after trailing 28-10. They scraped on the offensive glass, grabbing 10 rebounds, turning them into 11 secondchance points in the 1st half. At the break, Chatfield’s lead was eleven (34-23). A couple Knight triples, back-to-back, got the silver and black as close as 40-30 early in the 2nd stanza, but that was as close as they would get. At the 3:31 mark, Kingsland finally got its first 2-point FG of the 2nd stanza. They scored only seven points in the first twelveplus minutes. That, in combination with all that Chatfield had going for it, led to a 65-40 Gopher win. Miller (20 pts, 6 rebs, 4 stls) and Talamantes (10 pts, 4 assists) led the victors in scoring. For Kingsland Marissa Bornholdt had all 9 of her points in the 1st half. Haley Colton scored 9 too (all from distance) while adding 6 assists and 5 steals. Lizzie Tart had 8 points and 6 rebounds off the Knight bench. Losey finished with a season-tying low of 7 points (6 rebounds), albeit she only took seven shots and five were from distance. The Knights’ record falls to 3-4 in the 3-Rivers, 5-6 overall. Chatfield improves to 5-3 in league, 6-3 overall. They trail Dover-Eyota (7-0, 11-0), Caledonia (7-0, 9-0), Southland (6-1, 6-2), and PlainviewElgin-Millville (5-2, 6-2) in the conference race. Merry Christmas Knights… From: Skare and Bance In Chatfield, the Knight and

Kingsland girl’s basketball player Cheyenne Losey is Athlete of the Week. The 5’10” senior reached a milestone, surpassing 1,000 career points versus St. Charles, a game the Knights won (Losey registering her 4th double-double of the season). Cheyenne leads Kingsland in scoring (16.4 PPG) and rebounding (8.8 RPG) and, more oft than not, is the Knights dame in shining armor. Photo by Paul Trende

Gopher boys did battle. The maroon and white guys couldn’t replicated the girls out of the gate. Kingsland was actually initially quicker down the slope in their toboggan. Four of the Knights’ first six threes fell. The black and silver built an early 21-15 lead. To that Chatfield seemingly said, “Be careful what you wish for (a shoot-out).” After feeding Jayme LaPlante for their first two buckets, and getting some mid-range game from Nate Skare, the Gophs attacked from the 3-point line. Senior guard Reid Danielson hit a couple in the first half, Skare one, but sophomore guard Christian Bance got the hottest. The 6’0” lefty nailed three triples in the final 6:00 before halftime. He scored 8 points of a 12-0 Gopher run that sent the home squad into the break up 42-29. In the 2nd

half, Skare toed the (3-point) line and tickled the twine. He nailed three triples in the first 12:00. The Gopher lead ballooned into the twenties. The verdict was sealed. By a final of 77-53, Chatfield downed Kingsland. Skare was Santa Gopher; offering up many gifts (25 pts, 8 rebs, 4 assists, and 3 stls) to Chatfield fans. He was 10 of 15 from the field, 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, or the equivalent of coal in the Knights’ Christmas stockings. Bance had a career-high 18, making 5 of 10 FGs, 5 of 8 from beyond the arc, the equivalent of a Skare’s (Santa’s) lead elf. Danielson was also helpful, reaching double figures (10 pts) and dealing out 6 assists. The Gophers as a team were better from distance (12 of 20, 60 percent), and nearly better from the field (25-51, 49 percent), than they were from the FT stripe (13-25, 52 per-

cent). Sophomore Jacob Rindels (15 points) and senior Marshall Oeltjen (12 points, 9 rebounds) led the Knights (who feature only two seniors). Kingsland’s record is 2-3 (3-Rivers), 2-5 (overall). Chatfield’s record is 3-3 (3-Rivers), 4-3 overall. BBB 12-17 •Mabel-Canton 42, Riceville IA 48 (M-C: Noah Manning 10 pts; Justin Ward 6 pts (season low), (but) 10 rebs, 7 assists, 4 stls.
