Cover story He used to be one of the thousands who dreamed and believed. And though he didn’t take home the title in GMA-7’s reality show “StarStruck” in 2006, Paulo Avelino continued making little steps and took a leap of faith in order to find the path to stardom.

H

e played supporting roles in Kapuso network with shows such as “Babangon Ako’t Dudurugin Kita,” “Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan,” “Luna Mystika,” “Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin?,” All My Life,” and “Ilumina.” Although he wasn’t the lead in the said shows, Paulo has already caught the viewers’ attention with his mettle in acting coupled with good looks. Just as he was clinching a spot in the Kapuso network’s stable of stars, Paulo surprised everyone when he decided to transfer to the Kapamilya network in 2011 saying he wanted to get out of his comfort zone to pave the way for new changes in his showbiz career. Three years after making that decision, the 26-yearold beguiling actor can look back with a smile on his face because of the enormous success he achieved – starring in high-rated primetime series, landing acting recognitions, walking in the romp, and getting endorsements here and there. The Kapamilya star, who came from a prominent family in Baguio City, got his first major acting award from Gawad Urian for his realistic portrayal as a bisexual in “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” opposite Rocco Nacino. And then came his biggest break when he became one of the leading stars of the hit primetime series “Walang Hanggan” with Coco Martin and Julia Montes. It was followed by “Kahit Konting Pagtingin,” “Honesto,” and “Sana Bukas Pa ang Kahapon.” A family drama series, Paulo has reaped good reviews in “Sana Bukas Pa ang Kahapon” for his portrayal of the role of Patrick, a young man who fell in love with one of Bea’s characters, Rose. It was a challenging role for Paulo who worked with a powerful cast including Albert Martinez, Eddie Garcia, Dina Bonnevie, Tonton Gutierrez, Anita Linda, Maricar Reyes and Susan Roces. “More than being pressured, I am honored that I’m given the chance to work with them because I am really learning so much as an actor,” said Paulo. He also starred in several movies such as “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow,” “Shake, Rattle & Roll 14,” “The Bride and the Lover,” “Debosyon,” “Sana Dati,” “Status: It’s Complicated” and “Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay.” Apart from his stint in acting, Paulo has also released his self-titled album last year under Universal Records. Recently, Paulo has elicited shrieks and screams from thousands of fans who trooped the SM Mall of Asia Arena for Bench’s “Naked Truth” underwear fashion show as he flaunted his well-trimmed, sexy body. A few days after, Paulo headlined Cosmopolitan magazine’s “Cosmo Bachelor Bash 2014” held at the World Trade Center. The Kapamilya actor is the featured cover guy of the magazine’s special issue. He’s also a favorite tabloid fodder: from siring his child named Ethan Akio with fellow StarStruck alumni LJ Reyes to news of an attitude problem to dating Sharon Cuneta’s daughter, KC Concepcion. But Paulo, despite a slew of intrigues, has emphasized his love for his craft and how he imagined himself being in showbiz since he was young. From being a part of a reality talent show, Paulo is one of the perfect examples that one contest or one achievement cannot fully define one’s fate in the glitzy world of showbiz. Paulo has reached stardom and you bet he doesn’t intend to stop there.

Japan Holds Its Very First World Assembly For Women TOKYO, Japan – Prominent women political and business leaders from around the world gathered here on September 12-14 for the very first “World Assembly for Women in Tokyo” (WAW Tokyo 2014!) organized by the Japanese government to further promote women’s active role in the country and the world.

P

rime Minister Shinzo Abe led the three-day conference together with his wife First Lady Akie Abe. “’Creating a society in which women shine,’ has consistently been one of my highest priority issues since the launch of my administration in December 2012… I reshuffled my Cabinet on September 3, where I appointed five women, and that number is said to be equal to the highest number ever in Japan,” Abe said in his welcome remarks. “Changes are now underway. And we have just now come to stand at the starting line. I will stand at the forefront as we work to build a society in which all people – both men and women – shine,” he added. Among the participants were IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, U.S. 8

Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy, Disney/ABC President Anne Sweeney and former U.K. First Lady Cherie Blair. “To rescue the Japanese economy is to empower its women ... Dynamism and ingenuity is what we need,” Legarde emphasized in her keynote speech. Sen. Loren Legarda represented the Philippines in the high level symposium where she stressed the need to address the vulnerability of women to disasters. “We need to capacitate women as part of the overall strategy on disaster risk reduction and management. They have a wealth of capacities that need to be harnessed. We need to tap these vital resources to achieve sustainable development, reduce disaster risks and promote resilience in our communities.” she stated.

FILJAP MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2014

The following issues were discussed in the meeting: economic benefits achievable by promoting the active roles of women, diversity in working styles, the development of society, and the common issues relating to women throughout the world. Japan is one of the wealthy nations around the world with a small percentage of female workforce. The event was one of the efforts to achieve ‘A Society Where Women Shine,’ one of the main issues of the Abe administration. The event was jointly hosted by four organizations: Government of Japan, KEIDANREN (Japan Business Federation), Nikkei Inc., and the Japan Institute of International Affairs. Also, it was supported by the Japan Center for Economic Research.

PHILIPPINE ADVENTUREs

Guimaras:

A s u o i r GlGo limpse

Guisi Lighthouse Text and photos by Arlene Donaire

The word “Guimaras” has several origins. Historical documents say that the Pre-Spanish Ilonggos knew Guimaras as “Himal-us.” It may have also been originated by Spanish missionaries who named the island after a peninsula in Portugal called Guimaraes, or from names of places in Spain such as Guimaran in the provinces of Leon and Galeria, Guimera in Catalonia, Gomera in the Canary Islands.

G

uimaras Island was once, geophysically a part of Panay Island according to archaeological accounts. Politically, prior to the 1992, when a plebiscite was conducted for the ratification of converting it into a fullfledged province, Guimaras had been a sub-province of the Province of Iloilo. Guimaras now, is comprised of five municipalities and ninety-eight 14

barangays with Jordan as the capital town. Hiligaynon is the native dialect. The island’s main economic driver is agriculture and fishery. Provincial government, however, in recent years has promoted the island as an agri- and ecotourism destination in Western Visayas. (From http://www.guimaras.gov.ph) Guimaras Island is accessible via a brief boat ride from Iloilo City’s Ortiz Wharf. Make sure to start out at daybreak

FILJAP MAGAZINE | NOVEMBER 2014

so you can catch the beautiful sunrise to kick-off that adventurous spirit in you. For a day-tour of the island, there is ample time to visit some key tourist spots, just enough to whet one’s appetite for adventure. For those that prefer to relish the island’s varied tourist offerings, there are many beach resorts to choose from. Check out http://www.guimaras.gov. ph/tourism/beach-resorts/ for the top choices.

Where to Go: Starting off from Iloilo’s Ortiz Wharf, one arrives at the Jordan Wharf in Guimaras after a leisurely and scenic 15-20 minute boat ride. At the Jordan Wharf, one can easily take public utility jeepney to go around town. Some of the exciting places to visit, to maximize your day trip, are as follows: Balaan Bukid – First stop is one of the most significant religious landmarks in Guimaras, the Balaan Bukid or Holy Mountain. Better to go there in the early morning, as the hike up the summit is a bit challenging but the view at the top is energizing. Along the trail, one finds the 14 Stations of the Cross and atop, the Shrine of Ave Purisma, which pilgrims and devotes converge during the Lenten Season and every 1st of May. Across the chapel is a natural tower, carved out of a boulder, where a huge cross has been planted to mark the shrine. The rewarding view at the summit, on a clear sunny day is a panorama of Iloilo City. An Italian priest, Rev. Fr. Bergil Pixner, discovered the Shrine in 1956. The Shrine is now under the supervision of the Parish of St. John the Baptist by Msgr. Angel Lagdameo, Bishop, Archdiocese of Jaro.

Guisi Lighthouse – From the mountain top, the next stop is a coastal landmark, the remnants of the Faro de Punta Luzaran (Guising Lighthouse). This 17.5 m (58 ft.) octagonal cylindrical tower lighthouse was constructed by the Spanish government in 1894-1896, as part of their Master Plan for the lighting of the Maritime Coasts of the Philippine Archipelago, stands atop a cliff and overlooks Guisi’s white sand beach. In current times, to serve the navigational needs fisher folks and sailors cruising Panay Gulf, the Philippine Coast Guard built a modern white lighthouse, i.e., Spanish Lighthouse No. 12, to mark the southern entrance to Iloilo in Panay. Reyman Beach – Having viewed the white beach of Guisi, the next best place to test the waters is in Reyman Beach, a good example of Guimaras’ wonderful beach offerings. Found in Alubihod, Nueva Valencia, the place is accessible by boat and land transport, and its tranquil cove-like beach line makes it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and fun games. Raymen Beach is 40 minutes from Jordan wharf or an hour from Iloilo Wharf and it is also a practical staging point for the next part of a day tour - island hopping around Guimaras. SEAFDEC Facility – A purposeful island-hopping tour around Guimaras’ famed islets with their unique characteristic beaches, eventually takes you to the Igang Marine Station of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), which is located on the southwest portion of Guimaras Island. The facility, which was built in 1974 to study the breeding of tiger shrimp in pens, is composed of four islets and clusters of floating fish cages interconnected by floating foot bridges. A resident scientist is onsite to give visitors an educational tour on the various species that are being studied for research and production runs. http://www.seafdec.org. ph/our-organization/stations-facilities/igang-marinestation/ Finally, of course, on your way back to the Jordan Wharf, don’t forget to have a taste of Guimaras’ famous sweet mangoes, which can be bought almost anywhere and the mango-based delicacies developed by local entrepreneurs. Make the Guimaras Trade and Information Center, located just across the Provincial Government Offices in San Miguel be your final stop. http:// agboi.blogspot.com/2012/09/guimaras-trade-andinformation-center.html

A Second Term

in focus

FOR

President

Aquino? Photo by Lauro Montellano Jr. / Malacañang Photo Bureau

Talk of the town recently was the full-page advertisements published in several national newspapers calling for President Benigno Aquino III’s second term for presidency. The said ads, which were made and paid by Movement for Reform, Continuity and Momentum (MORE2COME), listed Aquino’s successful reforms and pointed that there is no other choice for presidency but him.

“P

Noy’s relentless and unforgiving campaign against corrupt officials, including the proverbial ‘big fish,’ not only redeemed the promise of (the straight path) but may have actually brought about the growing belief among our countrymen that Government can be an ally of the Common Tao, and that public service may actually merit public trust,” it said. The said advertisements calls for a signature campaign seeking eight million signatures in order to convince Aquino to run for a second term despite a Constitutional ban on re-election based from Section 4, Article VII of the 1987 Constitution. Malacañang denied any involvement in the publication of the said advertisements. “We have nothing to do with those advertisements,” said Communications Secretary Hermino Coloma, Jr. Coloma added that Malacañang only became aware of the said ads when it came out on September 30

emphasizing that none of them knew the movement that was behind the publication of the ads. The President, according to Coloma, is continuously listening to the sentiments of his “bosses” [Filipino people] regarding the future of the nation particularly the continuity of the reforms that the Aquino administration have already done. “Patuloy ang ginagawang pakikinig ng Pangulo sa pagpapahiwatig ng saloobin ng mga mamamayan alinsunod sa layuning patatagin ang reporma at gawing ganap ang transpormasyon sa ating lipunan,” said Coloma. Coloma also said that the President has no final decision yet although he is ready to step down when his term ends in 2016. This also came in the heels of a poll conducted by Pulse Asia recently asking: “If the Constitution will be amended and the president would be allowed to run again, are you in favor or not in favor of President Aquino

running again for the presidency?” Survey results showed that 62% of the respondents were not in favor of Aquino gunning for second term while 38% said otherwise. “Ang layunin ng Pangulo ay malaman sa lahat ng pagkakataon kung ano ang saloobin at tinig ng mga mamamayan at para naman makatugon sa tamang paraan ng kanyang administrasyon, lalo na sa aspeto ng pagpapahusay ng pamamalakad o ‘yung good governance, at ‘yung pagpapatupad ng mga reporma. “Therefore, we take the position that the voice of the people ought to be heard; the voice of the people ought to be listened to as a basis for decision-making,” Coloma added.
