OVERVIEW

DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILES

The women of Gee’s Bend—a small, remote, black community in Alabama—have created hundreds of quilt masterpieces dating from the early twentieth century to the present. Enlivened by a visual imagination that extends the expressive boundaries of the quilt genre, these astounding creations constitute a crucial chapter in the history of African American art with quilts composed boldly and improvisationally, in geometries that transform recycled work clothes and dresses, feed sacks, and fabric remnants. The women of Gee’s bend have passed down quilting within their community and have taught workshops outside of Gee’s Bend. This is a unique opportunity as it will be the first workshop taught by the women of Gee’s Bend at Gee’s Bend. These women are especially know for their improvisational way of quilting and how they are inspired by the world around them.

Jasmine Bendolph (22) African American female who just graduated college with a degree in nursing. Her mother (born in Gee’s bend but who moved away before Jasmine was born) has taught Jasmine all that she knows about quilting. Jasmine wants to learn more about her heritage while also improving her quilting skills.

STRATEGY The people of Gee’s Bend have endured much hardship and pain in their past however they are deeply religious people who hold no grudges. The tone of the workshop is to be light, upbeat, and inspiring. This will be achieved through a modern and bright color scheme with the potential for some witty language to engage the viewer. The women of Gee’s Bend hope that after attending the workshop and interacting with the people and area that attendees will be left fulfilled and inspired and looking forward to the next workshop.

TARGET AUDIENCE Quilting is a female dominated hobby / art form / past time. The workshop is open to women (and men, but none quilt) of all ages who wish to learn how to quilt or to be inspired / learn a new way of quilting or simply to spend some time with others who enjoy quilting. The target audience is females who are retired and have the time and money to spend on quilting and workshops. Most of the women who attend the workshop will be from Alabama within 250 miles of Gee’s Bend. There may be a few women who have heard of the Gee’s Bend Quilters who have the funds and are willing to travel from further away to share in the experience.

Annie Shoemake (35) Caucasian female who works as a lawyer in Montgomery, AL. She is looking to pick up a new hobby and recently read an article on the women of Gee’s Bend. She is inspired by their method of quilting and is excited to hear some of their stories. Martha Thornley (67) Caucasian female who was recently widowed and lives in Opelika, AL. She has been quilting for 30 plus years but is looking for a new way of quilting that takes more artistic liberties versus following the set pattern. She is also looking forward to getting to socialize with a group of people who share a common interest as her as she has recently been keeping to herself.

COMPETITION While individual quilt guilds may host workshops only members of the guild can attend. These guilds also operate under traditional quilting rules of following a set pattern. This is also true for one on one teaching studios. The workshop at Gee’s Bend will be set apart as it will be a community atmosphere where all levels of quilters are welcome. Gee’s Bend quilts are set apart from many others in that they are made with an improvisational style of quilting. The women do not have a set pattern in their head when they begin but rather allow the world around them to influence how they quilt.

Color and Paper Samples The women of Gee’s Bend use colors so well within their quilts that I knew I wanted to use a color palette that had been used within one of their pieces.

They tend to use a bunch of primary colors so it was just finding a color scheme that was bright enough but yet had an anchor color to tone it down. I also knew that I would be using a soft white paper with a slight texture which would allow the colors to really pop. The topmost color scheme seemed to work as the navy worked well as an anchor. The blues represented their work clothes / jeans that many of the quilters have used in their work as well as the water as Gee’s Bend is surrounded on three sides by a river. The orange and red were such vibrant colors that really brought the work to live and filled it with energy. The women are s vibrant themselves that it would have been a disservice to them to have a traditional quilting color scheme or muted scheme as that is not true to who they are.

Logo Ideas / Sketches I knew that I wanted a type logo for my workshop that would have an easily recognizable shape / color. The length of the workshop’s name posed a problem as it was too long to have in a singular line. This led to stacking the words on top of each other. I then played with different holding shapes.

For the logo I knew I wanted the type to stack. I thought it would be neat to incorporate different typefaces as the women of Gee’s Bend worked with whatever fabric was available to them. So the idea of “stitching together” multiple typefaces seemed fitting. I thought each line being a separate color might help the idea but it seemed to create 3 different lines of type. Letting all 3 lines stay the same color but changing typefaces seemed to have a better effect.

I decided I really like the New Baskerville Q so just needed a nice italic and a sans serif to pair with Quilting. Galaxie Copernicus had a lovely italic and then I decided on Trade Gothic as my sans serif set in all caps with some tracking to add a different texture and allow the word workshop to be tertiary. Originally I had Gee’s Bend as one line but keeping it in the same typeface and letting it take up two lines ended up working better for the hierarchy.

I knew the logo was lacking so I decide to add in a texture. I had already given the containing shape a texture and thought that if the type stood alone without the containing shape, it would need something to set it apart. I tried rubbing several different textures as well as copying the logo and then roughing it up and scanning it back in to achieve a texture I might like. In the end I ended up combining both methods.

Logo Revisions Played with different textures and rubbings. The problem was that some would come out to light and others did not show their texture when scaled down. In the end, I combined a scan and a texture to have the effect that I wanted.

Logo Roughs This was the logo that I showed at mid semester review. The logo needed some slight tweaking in terms of space and kerning. It was decided that the logo works best when contained within the irregular shape rather than attempting to make it stand alone. The double texture within the containing shape and type was also overbearing so I need to simplify; try clean type on the textured background.

Final Logo Originally I allowed the logo to be on any of the four colors in my color scheme (red, orange, teal, navy). However, I tended to only use the red logo as it felt to be the most representative of the women and worked the best on all of my pieces.

Business Card Final The square formate really helped open up what I could do with the business cards and direction of the project. By allowing the front to be one color, I could then play with the logo appearing on different colored fronts with each having a clean back that displays the information clearly.

Rough Letterhead & Envelope I struggled with wanted to incorporate blocks of color, quilts, but not having them be to overwhelming. As I began to lose the big blocks I added in stitches and then let the blocks become even smaller and crop off the page so that they would become more of an artistic element that elevated each piece.

Desktop Sketches I wanted the website to be inviting and colorful but not overwhelming. I used color blocks to highlight important information but ensured that there was enough white space around the elements to ensure that the colors and patterns would not become dominant elements and would instead allow the work and women to shine.

I really struggled with the posters, as I wanted to showcase the quilts but then needed to figure out how to set the type underneath to not compete but to inform you on what the poster was about without having to read through all of the body copy. The breakthrough came when I decided to showcase the edge of the quilts and then set the type for workshop in multiple different typefaces and allowed the information to play off of the axis of the P in workshop.

This system was successful as it allowed each quilt to shine in their own right. By showcasing the bottom edge of the quilt, it alerted the viewer as to what they were looking at. The type underneath further informs the viewer but does not detract from the quilts above.

Brochure Template & Sketches I knew that I did not want a standard brochure and thought that the way the brochure would fold out was important. I ended up going with the square format that unfolded similar to how a folded quilt would reveal itself.

Brochure Roughs The brochure was one of the first pieces to come together for me and really informed how the rest of the project would take shape. I knew I wanted the rest to be as fun and colorful as the brochure but also modern and sophisticated. This is where the white space came in to help elevate the overall feel of the design.

Pamphlet Rough I changed the brochure to be square format which also gave it a more intimate feel. The biggest struggle was finding a cover that went with the same feel as the rest of the pieces. The cover on the left which I had presented at midsemester, was deemed too dark.

Book Sketches I wanted the book to be close to a square proportion to represent the shape of the majority of the quilts that the women quilt. I was originally sketching in the type in two columns but quickly realized that when people talk it flows and is not a two column thing. This led me to play with the type shifting from column to column.

Book Typestudies (abridged) Wanted a font with some quirkiness but that would still be easy enough to read. Ended up choosing Galaxie Copernicus as it had a tall x-height, multiple different weights, and a beautiful italic.

Book Roughs Very rough version of the whole book laid in. Was seriously lacking color and large scale images. The type still felt generic and not personable enough for as dynamic as these women and their stories were. This led me to researching a third typeface to play with.

Book Roughs I tried playing with color blocks and stitching, however we decided that the running stitch began to feel redundant and arbitrary. I incorporated the color blocks along with the quilt patches.

Cover Ideas Originally the cover was going to fully cover the front of the book. However, the first version that I printed of the cover was a half size rough and I really liked the way it looked over what would have been the end-sheets. I then played with different papers and layouts. I knew I didn’t want the cover to become too complicated and really liked how it ended up interacting with the quilt on the inside.
