Bach and the Mystery of the B Minor Mass $25 / $30 February 17 at 1 – 2:30pm, Thursday CO4606 – The Collaboratory (Downtown Fort Myers) Speaker: Dr. Arthur Wenk Bach’s B Minor Mass has been described as “the greatest musical artwork of all times and all people.” But the first complete performance of the work took place more than a century after the composer’s death. Why would Bach, a composer in the Lutheran church, compose a Latin mass in a form that could not be performed liturgically in either the Roman Catholic or the Lutheran Church? Uncovering the answer to that question will offer insights into the makeup of this extraordinary work and composer. Here, in this country, with the coming together of musical instruments and singing from Africa, the Caribbean, and European instruments, and harmonies, we have created a totally new genre of music. But wait! Jazz is comprised of many styles and the awesome news is that all the various sub-genres are still played today!

Puccini Heroines $25 / $30 May 12 at 10 – 11:30am, Thursday BV4610 – Bentley Village (North Naples) Speaker: Dr. Krzysztof Biernacki Giacomo Puccini’s operas are filled with stories of betrayal, murder, and love that push female characters to emotional extremes. Soprano heroines are often the characters most caught up in Puccini’s operatic drama and who define Puccini’s style as an opera composer. Please join this engaging overview of Puccini’s main operas examined from the perspective of the female lead characters.
