Inspection and Registration The school has been inspected and registered by Richmond Borough Council and by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED), a department of the UK Government. Sudbrook was judged outstanding in all 17 categories, one of only 8 nursery schools in the country to achieve this – see www.ofsted.gov.uk. We are a member of the Richmond Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership. This enables parents of eligible 3 and 4 year olds to obtain Government grants of approximately £575 per term towards the cost of fees.

The School

Educational Programme

Established in 1962, Sudbrook School is one of only a handful of schools in the country to have been judged Outstanding by Ofsted in all 17 categories. Sudbrook was also a finalist in the 2011 prestigious pre-school of the year Nursery World awards, chosen from nursery schools across the UK. The school is based in Petersham Village Hall, one mile from Richmond and Kingston. Unusually spacious, it has a central hall with a stage – which is used for our popular and highly regarded shows throughout the year - as well as two large classrooms and a large private garden.

At Sudbrook children learn to play with others and activities are planned to capture the children’s attention and to stimulate their imaginations. They are introduced to equipment that focuses their concentration and exercises their motor co-ordination skills. This development progresses to early language and number activities. The children will explore their ideas through painting, drawing, modelling and constructive activities. They will experiment with sand and water and gradually investigate the world around them. Cooking, singing, dancing and physical activities all play their part in each day’s timetable.

The school is situated on a private road backing on to Richmond Park, in the conservation area of Petersham. There is also easy parking for drop-off and pick-up. We provide nursery education for children aged two to five. We encourage a strong sense of community among our children and parents and, we hope, long-term friendships.

Staff and Education Sudbrook is recognised for its high-calibre, long-serving staff, many of whom speak additional languages; there is a high staff to pupil ratio. We also have specialist music and dance teachers. Sudbrook has a reputation for consistently high standards in language, mathematics and the creative arts. When our children leave they are independent, confident and well prepared for the next stage in their education.

As the children progress, these initial skills are extended and they are given more opportunities to experiment, observe, question and discuss. Children are encouraged to use numbers as well as recognising letter sounds and shapes and respond to stories and rhymes. Our children are now gaining in confidence, sharing and helping each other as well as learning about other cultures. This stage lays the foundations for their future learning skills and prepares them for the challenges of primary school. The children are assessed twice a year and individual targets agreed with parents during parent teacher meetings. We have an Open Day in the Summer Term when children can share their achievements with parents. During the year we have a number of performances, in which all children take part. In addition, we value the close cooperation between home and school through parental involvement in the day-to-day activities of the school.

Parents Parents play a key role at Sudbrook School. We have a Parents’ Group which organises many social events and we encourage parents to come into school whenever they can to cook with the children, read with them or organise an activity of their choice. Parents are also invited to contribute to the school’s development plan for the future.

School Attendance The school year consists of 33 weeks divided into three terms. Monday to Friday, 9:15am to 12:15 pm There are drinks and a snack of fruit or vegetable available during the morning which the children bring in and prepare.

Additional sessions: We run two afternoon sessions where children can bring a packed lunch and stay until 2.30 on a Tuesdays and 2pm on Thursdays. There is also an early drop-off facility each morning from 8.30 am. A Toddlers group takes place on a Tuesday from 9.30am until 11am

Equal Opportunities Sudbrook believes in equal opportunities ensuring that all children regardless of sex, race, religious beliefs or disability are provided with an environment where they can develop as individuals with positive images of themselves and others.
