Manekenk Dos décadas después de su celebrado documental ecológico Inti Anti, camino del sol, Juan Schröder regresa al terreno de sus obsesiones: el grito de un planeta gravemente herido. Intrigado por la teoría de un antropólogo argentino según el cual existió una etnia fueguina anterior a los onas y los yámanas, la de los manekenk, Schröder salió en busca de los rastros de esta comunidad que acaso haya sido la única habitante de la península en algún momento, antes de verse desplazada y mezclarse con los onas. Animada, como el director, por una ferviente militancia ambientalista, Marilina Ross interpreta a una mujer xoon, nexo entre su pueblo y Temaukel, el Creador de todas las cosas. Entre ambos dan forma a una aventura que compila, en palabras de su autor, “las grandes atrocidades provocadas por el hombre: las guerras, la deforestación, el hambre” y aboga por “la esperanza de una Nueva Tierra”. Debido a múltiples obstáculos, y a pesar de haber sido empezada en 1999 y de haberse exhibido en escuelas y centros culturales, Manekenk nunca había podido encontrarse con su público en las condiciones propias de un estreno cinematográfico. Esta edición del Festival saldará la deuda.
Two decades after his celebrated environmental documentary Inti Anti, camino al sol, Juan Schröder goes back to the world of his obsessions: a badly injured planet’s cry for help. Intrigued by an Argentine anthropologist’s theory that states that there was an ethnic group in Tierra del Fuego before the onas and the yamanas, the manekenk, Schröder went out in search of the traces of this community that might have been the only inhabitants of the peninsula at some point, right before it was displaced and mixed with the onas. Like the director himself, the film is fueled by a fervent environmentalist activism and starred by Marilina Ross, who plays a xoon woman, a link between her people and Temaukel, the Creator of all things. They both shape an adventure that gathers, according to its author, “the great atrocities mankind has provoked: war, deforestation, and hunger”, and argues in favor of “the hope for a New Earth”. Due to multiple obstacles, and despite the fact that production started in 1999 and the film was screened in schools and cultural centers, Manekenk would have never find its audience in the proper conditions of a film premiere. This edition of the Festival will settle that debt.
