AND FINALLY…

The Exhibition Survival Guide Val Hirst provides a few well-honed tips that will help you get the best out of FESPA 2005!

Over the years, I’ve attended more exhibitions than I care to remember, both as a visitor and an exhibitor, which is why, in theory, I should be ideally placed to provide lots of useful hints and tips that will ensure you get the best out of your Munich experience. However, although it pains me to admit it, I am the last person that anyone should take advice from. Prior to any show, I usually find myself working right up until the moment that I leave for the airport, in order to make up for the days that I’ll be missing. My pre-show plan therefore consists of nothing more organised than flinging assorted items into a suitcase and hoping for the best. However, having compiled masses of information on FESPA 2005 during the last several months, I feel the time has finally come for me to be a little bit more grown-up about this. So I’m providing the following as much as an aide memoire for myself, as a set of suggestions for you.

82 FESPA WORLD 12/04

1. Book your accommodation and do this now. And as I have learnt through bitter experience, it is usually best to do this yourself. Three years ago, I foolishly entrusted my hotel reservation to a colleague who managed to book rooms for the following month. As a result, I had to endure five dreadful days of moving between a succession of different hotels, with all of the packing and unpacking and subsequent loss of belongings that that entailed! 2. Spend some time before the show deciding who and what you most want to see. If you feel that you will need to discuss your requirements with an exhibiting company, it’s a good idea to see whether you can make a firm appointment. Otherwise all that will happen is that you will spend the entire show missing the only person on the stand who can provide the information that you need. Most exhibitors will be only too happy to schedule a time. 3. The same goes for friends and contacts that you are hoping to catch up with at the show – with an exhibition the size of FESPA 2005, which is spread over four halls, the chances of just bumping into someone are greatly reduced. Make a definite date! 4. Using the information provided in this magazine and our more extensive online catalogue, make a list of all of your ‘must sees’ and arrange them in order of priority. And, to keep the legwork to a minimum, try to organise it so that you visit exhibitors in a logical sequence.

For example, If your list includes lots of companies exhibiting in different halls, try to visit all of the companies within a single hall on the same day. One of the reasons exhibitions are so exhausting is that we can spend our time literally walking miles – save your energy for the important things! 5. Make a note of any seminars that you want to see. If your watch or mobile phone has an alarm, set it to go off at least 15 minutes before the seminar is due to start. It’s easy to get so caught up in a conversation or engrossed in a demonstration that you lose all track of time and consequently miss the very seminar that you most wanted to attend. 6. Write your final list in a notebook that you can easily carry with you and, if possible, also carry a mini stapler. Allocate a couple of pages to each exhibitor and be sure to include the stand number and also names and contact numbers for the people you are hoping to see. You then have sufficient space to jot down any notes you need to make and can also staple business cards to the appropriate pages. This saves you ending up with a great wodge of cards at the end of the show that mean less than nothing to you! 7. When you first arrive at the show, do what the professionals do – walk the floor. This will give you the opportunity to see companies and products that are new to you. If you see anything worthy of further investigation, make a note of the exhibitor’s

name and stand number in your notebook so that you can revisit them later in the week. This will save you the anguish of wandering vaguely around trying to find them again three days later! 8. Plan your downtime! I can’t tell you how many evenings I’ve trailed around an unfamiliar city, searching in vain for somewhere nice to eat, only to later find that I had been a street or two away from all of the best restaurants! As briefly outlined on pages 30/32, Munich is a lively city with much to offer in terms of culture, culinary experiences and shopping. Visit www.munich-tourist.de for maps and information. 9. Wear comfortable shoes! As someone who is absolutely devoted to her stilettos, this is advice that I have no intention of taking, but most sensible people will want to give some careful thought to their footwear. I generally take a different pair of shoes for everyday – yes, they are all equally uncomfortable, but at least they all rub in different places, which usually ensures that I can hobble my way through to the end of a show! 10. Don’t’ forget to visit the Fespa stand (B1 440) where the team will be happy to provide any further assistance and information that you need. And between now and then, remember that you can probably find the answer to any exhibition-related question you want to ask, simply by visiting www.fespa2005.com Go ahead and enjoy!

According to DEMAK S.R.L, a manufacturer of doming machines, labels can really benefit from the addition of polyurethane (PU) doming. Advantages include threedimensional thickness, effective lens protection from environmental agents and excellent long-term durability. Just as importantly, the PU dome also adds eye appeal. PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

The growth in FESPA shows will also be matched with a membership recruitment drive. "It’s important that we help the national associations to attract more members," states Ricardo and goes on to explain that he feels this can best be achieved by offering special benefits that can only be realised through association membership. He continues: "We intend to appoint a person who will be responsible for promoting and co-ordinating the efforts of the different national associations, so that all member companies throughout Europe can enjoy the same level of advantages. We have already started this process and I believe it will really help us to properly fulfill our obligations to the associations, our collaborators and the wider industry." "I think that in all ways, FESPA is becoming a much more professionally run organisation," he muses. "I also think that we are becoming a more global organisation too and have become something of a driving force in the sense that we have organised literally dozens of

meetings with the CSGI, ASGA, SGIA, and have made substantial progress towards achieving our desire for mutual cooperation – in fact many of these new relationships have already been cemented whilst others will be finalised very shortly." FESPA has also worked hard to forge closer links with ESMA. "It has been one of the main areas of effort," confirms Ricardo, adding that ESMA has always been important to FESPA. "The Committee of suppliers that is ESMA was originally created from within the FESPA organisation, so in fact, it has always been a part of us." However, he acknowledges that this collaboration has possibly not progressed as speedily as he may have wished, although he remains optimistically philosophical. "Of course we hold different opinions at times – how could we not? We are approaching the same issues from a different perspective – that of the salesman and the customer! And from my own business life I know and accept that there are things that my customers are never going to reveal to me.

And, if I were to become too inquisitive, I would lose them – that’s just the commercial reality!" Ricardo remains confident however, that his successor will be able to consolidate the links that have already been forged between the two associations. "I know that Hellmuth won’t shirk the challenges that lie ahead of him in this regard and have great faith in his ability to meet ESMA’s needs in a constructive and beneficial way. The world is getting smaller and for that reason peace and harmony are more necessary than ever," he concludes. As our interview comes to a close, Ricardo says: "Through the pages of Fespa World I’d like to send my warmest regards to all of the people I have been lucky enough to meet during my presidency and to bid them a fond farewell. I also want to wish Hellmuth well in his new role. He has a lot of work ahead of him but I’m sure, like me, he feels that our efforts are more than outweighed by the level of satisfaction we achieve through working for FESPA."

In June, Hellmuth Frey will become FESPA’s new president. Val Hirst persuades him to reveal his plans for FESPA’s future. Hellmuth Frey’s screenprinting career got off to an exceptionally early start. As a small boy he remembers spending a lot of his time at his parents’ screenprinting company and, almost without realising it, absorbed much of the skill and expertise that has since proved so useful as he has progressed through the industry in both hands-on and managerial capacities.

"Over the years I’ve seen many changes – jobs that always used to be screenprinted are now produced by digital or offset methods, but at the same time, there are many new areas of application and for me, this is what helps to keep things fresh and exciting. For example I shouldn’t think there is a single airplane, car or truck that hasn’t involved the screen process at some

A member of the FESPA Board since 1996, Hellmuth has been active within the German Screenprinting Association ‘forever’. Hellmuth officially started work in the family business after leaving school in 1963 and, a decade later, passed the examination which allowed him to be fully recognised as a Master Screen Printer. He describes Screenprinting as "a very powerful and interesting sector", as well as one which continues to evolve. He says:

point in its manufacture. Most technical equipment and household white goods also have screenprinted elements too – in fact it’s easier to list those items which don’t. I firmly believe that there will always be a place for screenprinting although the applications – and the customers – will continue to change."

FESPA WORLD SPRING/05 43

PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

A member of the FESPA Board since 1996, Hellmuth has been active within the German Screenprinting Association "forever’. "My involvement started slowly," he remembers. "I began to participate in the work of the different committees, first the technical committee and then the training committee and so on, until eventually, in l983 I became the Chairman of the Technical Committee in the German Printing Association (BVDM), in other words the President of the German Screen Printers." His first association with FESPA came later. He continues: "The first FESPA exhibition I attended was actually in Paris in l963 and from that point on, I attended all of the FESPA shows, but I first became involved in the organisation after I had been delegated to attend the FESPA General Assembly on behalf of the German Screenprinting Association, an event that also took place in Copenhagen and was,

screenprinters. We also need to do much more to encourage digital printers to join the associations, as they are and will continue to be a major driving force in both the graphic and industrial sectors. Another weakness which I think is harder to reconcile are the problems that come with having a multi-lingual membership. Trying to ensure that we are all saying the same thing, even if we are saying it in different languages, is an on-going challenge." I ask Hellmuth in which ways he feels digital printing will impinge on screenprinting in the future. He replies: "For me, the two processes, screen and digital, are very similar, both in terms of applications, and the materials and substrates that are used. And actually the same applies to pad printing too - they are all processes that can be used in the graphics, textile and industrial sectors and

could help everyone save a lot of money that could be used more profitably in other areas. In the same way I think we need to find a way of ensuring that there is more regular dialogue between individual members. And this applies to members within the same associations as well as those that belong to different national associations. In effect, we need to think of ourselves as one big family – and hopefully as a happy family! Another thing that concerns Hellmuth is the amount of time that Board members have to devote to FESPA. "Increasingly, time is an issue," he says. "Whilst at present everyone appreciates the value of what we achieve and don’t, on the whole, begrudge the time it takes up, I am concerned that future generations might well decide that it is too onerous to take on Association responsibilities on top of full time employment. In these days of

I think the most important thing we can do is to work closely with all of the member associations to ensure that we fully understand the workings of the screen and digital sectors as they operate in different countries.

44 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

coincidentally, also the year that Fespa World was first published. Following the resignation of Michael Domberger, I became a Board Member." What, I ask Hellmuth are FESPA’s current strengths and weaknesses? He pauses before responding: "The strengths are easy – 27 National Associations are currently affiliated to FESPA – which in Association terms gives us a huge membership that is truly representative of Europe as a whole. The FESPA brand is recognised around the world and the FESPA exhibition remains the most influential international show of its kind. The Association also provides the perfect forum for the exchange of ideas and information via the regular secretaries’ meetings and indeed, this magazine. Latterly our scope has further increased thanks to the close relationships we have forged with Screenprinting Associations throughout the world and especially in Asia. But as for our weaknesses, we have to acknowledge that until now, the main focus has been screenprinting within the graphics sector and thus, we have had limited appeal for industrial in-plant

it is therefore essential that screenprinters learn everything they can about these two complementary processes. I think it is our job at FESPA to help the members of the various screenprinting associations to gather as much knowledge as they can, both through the FESPA and mini-FESPA events and the seminar programs and workshops that we run simultaneously." When I ask Hellmuth about the initiatives he is planning to launch during his term of office, his answer is both immediate and definite. "I think the most important thing we can do is to work closely with all of the member associations to ensure that we fully understand the workings of the screen and digital sectors as they operate in different countries. It strikes me that in the past, information that has been painstakingly gathered by one association could have been of equal interest and use to several other associations too. I feel that we need to find more effective ways of pooling our collective knowledge so that we don’t keep on ‘re-inventing the wheel’ and duplicating the same work over and over again. Quite apart from anything else, this

instant communications business life proceeds at a much faster pace than ever before and the demands are also much greater. So much so, that it often leaves people feeling that they have precious little time to spend with their families and on leisure pursuits, without taking anything else on. This is a problem that all associations will have to face and I think that we need to find ways of streamlining our activities as Board members if we want FESPA to continue to be a major driving force within the screen and digital sectors. Hellmuth concludes: Whilst the president of FESPA will always be seen as the figurehead of the Association, I am merely one of eight Board members. Without them, and the ongoing support received from the FESPA secretariat and the national associations, the President alone would be able to accomplish very little. To properly fulfil its obligations and to assure its future, FESPA needs us all to work together. I ask Hellmuth whether he is looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead, although I could have anticipated his reply – "Of course," he says!

Scitex strike partnership deal with Beiron Scitex Vision has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Beiron Group Corporation, the largest printing machinery manufacturer in China. The agreement initially covers the manufacturing and assembly of Scitex Vision’s entry-level superwide format digital printing system, the Grandjet Classic.

The partnership also paves the way for potential joint product development and other manufacturing activities that combine analogue and digital technologies. Dov Ofer, President and CEO, Scitex Vision comments: "We operate in a highly competitive market and, in order to remain

competitive we must constantly look to strengthen our product and service offering, as well as developing our core technology and skills. Partnerships such as this are key to bringing new strengths to the company and in this case, also demonstrates our commitment to the Chinese market."

Inca digital printers clean up! In only its fourth year of operation, Inca Digital Printers has reported rising sales and profits for the 2003/04 financial year. Turnover rose to £14.2m (€20.1m) together with a profit of £1m (€1.4m), a significant increase on the previous financial year when the company filed sales of £11.3m (€16m) and a profit of £0.3m (€0.42). "This has been a good year and the new Spyder and Columbia Turbo have been received with enthusiasm in the industry," states Managing Director Bill Baxter. He goes on to add that he expects these two new machines which were launched during 2004, to have a major impact on

the company’s turnover during the next 12 months. Since Inca’s formation during Drupa 2000, more than 120 Inca flatbed printers have been sold through distributor Sericol and installed worldwide, and a growing number of users are now ordering their second and third machines! Recent investment at Inca’s Cambridge factory includes the creation of a new clean room facility and training/demonstration suite. Since moving to its present site three years ago the company has trebled the area of its manufacturing facility, while recent additions to staff have brought this number up to just over 120.

Océ introduces Jeti to the UK Océ (UK) Limited, has agreed an exclusive distribution deal to market and sell Gandi Innovation's Jeti 3300 and Jeti 5000 "grand format" printing systems in the UK and Ireland, a development which marks the company’s first entrance into the grand format market. The Jeti systems, which are quickly making their mark in the super-wide solvent inkjet printer

sector, have notched up more than 100 installations since their launch two years ago. Nick Klitsie, Business Unit Director of Wide Format Printing Systems at Océ UK, says: "The Jeti systems are a

perfect complement to the existing Océ display graphics products, and thus it makes sense for us to move into the grand format arena with proven technology of this calibre."

The book seeks to provide the layman with as much information as he needs, to understand all of the myriad possibilities that the screen process offers, and does so in such an entertaining and interesting way that the reader can’t help but absorb the knowledge. Following chapters on the history of screenprinting together with a succinct overview of the technology, the book highlights products and applications that depend on screenprinting for their very existence. It also features over l00 photographs, which illustrate different techniques and applications and provide inspiration. Many of the pictures tell their own complete story, following an application through from concept to execution, whilst revealing all of the hidden mysteries that lie behind specific techniques. Perhaps most importantly of all, the book manages to convey something of the skill, dedication and passion that so many screenprinters devote to their work. Fast curing ink from Marabu Tampacure TPC, the UV-curable Marabu pad printing ink is an easily processed highly versatile product, which can be used for many applications and in conjunction with a wide range of substrates. Better still, it offers significant time savings, thanks to its immediate curing capability.

Tampacure TPC was originally conceived for use within the industrial padprinting sector, but it was quickly recognised that the use of a UV-curable ink offered considerable advantages in other fields of application too. Above and beyond single-coloured markings, it is also possible to

easily produce multi-colour prints; whether for give-aways such as lighters, tape dispensers and pens, modern storage media, sporting goods, drilling machines and much else besides. Tampacure TPC offers, high gloss, good opacity, high chemical and mechanical resistance and is suit-

able for use with most padprinting machines operating in day to day printshop conditions. Special colours are also available, upon request. For further information, please refer to www.marabu-inks.com

Tangible Brilliancy Until a few years ago, if we wanted to make our prints more exotic, we were limited to using relief print or thermo print, or a combination of both methods and the best we could hope for was partial lacquering. Ninoslav Bjelan of REM-B, ZAGREB shares his thought on the subject of UV lacquers. Regardless of which printing method we use, we always have to dry, or, to describe the process more accurately, to burn UV lacquer, as otherwise, it remains wet. In order to achieve the necessary burn we have to use a source of UV radiation that is twice as storng as the sun and accordingly, great care must be taken to protect the eyes and skin. The photoactivator, which is an integral part of the lacquer, reacts with the source of UV radiation to dry the lacquer more or less instantly, regardless of the thickness of the coating. We can print or coat UV

8 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

lacquer using offset print, flexo print, digital print or screenprint. As always, each technology has its own advantages and shortcomings. In each case it is important to ensure that the machine used has a built-in UV lamp to dry the applied lacquer. The drying speed depends on the type of lacquer used, the quantity of photo-activators, the thickness of the coating and of course, the strength of the UV light source. As a general rule, thicker lacquer requires a more powerful source of UV radiation. When using lacquer it is useful to remember that speed is not a

virtue. Since lacquer is machine applied along the whole surface of a substrate, we end up with a finish that is similar to a plasticised one. At first glance the most acceptable printing technique would appear to be offset, which is both fast and cost effective and offers the added advantage that the sheet can be either partially or fully lacquered. However, because offset printing is so fast, the lacquer is applied in a very thin layer, which follows the structure of the substrate’s printed surface. This means that the laquer doesn’t straighten and tighten as it should and the net result is a

lack lustre print, rather than a smooth and glossy one. With flexo printing, it goes without saying, that there is no point in printing on to corrugated cardboard if the lacquer is too thin to remain on the surface and provide the requisite smooth finish. And when printing roll labels, lacquering is generally only used to provide additional protection, rather than for aesthetic reasons. Since the majority of printed material comes in sheet form, it is impossible to lacquer it using the flexo print method. In the case of digital printing , the concept of UV

Safe screen cleaning

lacquering for enhancement is often confused with simply lacquering to provide UV protection, but both types of lacquer can be applied with a wide format digital printer. The lacquer applying nozzle covers the whole surface of the media and is dried by a UV lamp, which travels from one edge of the material to the other, gradually drying the whole print. Since the nozzle doesn’t operate in the same way as cartridges, it isn’t possible to lacquer separate segments. And it is also difficult to control both the speed and the introduction of the media. Screenprinting, therefore offers the widest range of possibilities. When using the screen process, the thickness of the lacquer can be determined by the operator and can range from between 10 microns up to 1 mm, thus ensuring a consistently glossy coating on a variety of

different materials. In order to achieve the desired level of gloss on a matte substrate, we can apply enough lacquer to fill in any uneven places. When lacquering on to an absorbent surface, we have to be particularly careful - UV light will only dry the lacquer which it can reach, thus, when lacquering very dark and absorbent surfaces, we need to use a lacquer which remains on top. (On surfaces which will require folding, lacquer is not a good option, due to the possibility of cracking. It is better to plastisise the whole surface instead.) Experience dictates that 99% of prints are partially lacquered using glossy lacquer, which means that the surrounding areas need to be matte. The best results are achieved on dark matte surfaces. On a plasticised matte sheet, where lacquer covers a colour image, we will achieve an even stronger intensity, which

provides a pleasing visual contrast and also provides wear resistance too. This combination of matte plasticising and partial UV lacquering should be used whenever the finished item is exposed to any degree of wear and tear. Another slightly cheaper possibility, is partial lacquering with UV lacquer on to a printed material that has already been lacquered with a standard offset matte lacquer. This offers a reasonable contrast between glossy UV lacquer and the matte surface. This variant is acceptable for all printed material which is not exposed to wear. In each case, it is important to achieve the greatest possible contrast between the glossy and the matte surface. To achieve an exceptionally high gloss, we must use the low-density net with a thick stencil and a thick lacquer on a non-absorbent surface. Since UV paints and lacquers don’t evaporate, every-

thing remains on the paper, but we should bear in mind that we can only print lacquers on brighter transparent colours, as UV radiation doesn’t dry thick coatings of black, grey, white, gold and silver as efficiently. Every UV paint has its own corresponding UV lacquer, which is characterised as glossy, matte or structural, depending on its appearance. A lacquer can also be classified according to its physical characteristics, when it is described as either elastic or stiff, more or less viscous, and as having better or worse adhesion to different surfaces. Chemically speaking, lacquers can be classed as suitable for use on absorbent or non-absorbent surfaces, and as having more or less chemical resistance to solvents. And of course, one of the big advantages of UV paints and lacquers is that they are truly environmentally friendly!

WHAT’S NEW IN SCREENPRINTING

Project manager Torunn Aakermann examines print quality of the new Pevikon P1510 paste PVC with product manager Anna Selvaag.

Pevikon paves the way for super-fine screenprinting Hydro Polymers has improved the formulation of a plastisol based on its Pevikon P1510 paste PVC resin used in the manufacture of screen printing inks. The changes have been made to accommodate the specialist requirements of new super fine screen-printing systems. In particular, when used with Stork’s new 250-mesh screen, very fine print quality close to rotogravure standard can be achieved. Pevikon P1510 incorporates low viscosity, ultra fine particle size and distribution, and since it has no hard agglomerates it enables the plastisol to pass

easily through fine mesh screens. As a result, when a pattern is transferred to paper or print substrate, very accurate register is achieved with enhanced tonal variation between light and dark areas within the printed image. The low viscosity and good flow rate also assists in maintaining ink throughput in high speed printing lines. The Pevikon P1510 has high transparency, high gloss properties and mixes well with metallic pigments.

Plastisols are solvent free systems that do not dry on the screen, thus reducing the need for post print process cleaning. As well as being used in the manufacture of plastisol based silk screening inks, Pevikon P1510 ultra fine paste making homopolymer can be used for fabric coating and impregnation, stickers/decals and coil/metal coatings and decorations. New Autotex film with anti-microbal properties Autotype International has launched a new version of its proven Autotex hard-coated polyester film. This is the first material of its type to incorporate built-in Microban Antimicrobial protection that inhibits the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, mould and mildew. Called Autotex AM, the unique substrate has been specially designed for any hygiene critical surface application where preventing the growth and spread of bacteria is essential. Cleanliness and hygiene are crucial in areas such as hospitals, convalescent homes, supermarkets, prisons and schools. Research has proven that hand contact with contaminated surfaces can rapidly transfer bacteria to other surfaces as well as individuals. The new film substrate combines the proven benefits of 10 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

Autotex – a tough, durable surface with an ink primer on the reverse side that is receptive to a wide range of graphic inks – with the antimicrobial properties of Microban technology. This unique combination makes the substrate ideal for any surface application, such as membrane keyboards, fascia panels, wall coverings, shelf and bench tops, or indeed, anywhere where durability and antimicrobial protection is needed. Autotex AM is also scratch and chemical resistant, and can withstand the rigours of every day use and the most aggressive cleaning methods. The Microban Antimicrobial technology is incorporated into the Autotex textured hard coat during manufacturing, ensuring

an even distribution of the antimicrobial agent throughout the texture and film surface. This effectively guarantees surface protection throughout the lifetime of the product. Autotex AM has been extensively tested and is proven to inhibit the growth of a wide range of bacteria, fungi and moulds including MRSA, Salmonella Enteritidis, Escherichia Coli and Listeria Monocytogenes. The antimicrobial protection of Microban works by penetrating the cell wall of micro-organisms that come into contact with the substrate surface and disrupting their cell functions, making them unable to grow or reproduce. Cleaner Screens in Minutes! A top of the range BMW, a new set of Ping clubs – yes, there are definitely some purchases which one can’t resist talking about. However, there are other sorts of acquisitions, which it may be wiser to keep to one’s self. For example, Investing in a new technology, which has been designed to increase productivity and minimise overheads. Suddenly you can offer unbeatable lead times and prices – why let your competitors in on the secret of your success? That’s the view of one of Vision Supplies’ customers who recently became the first company in the UK to buy a new, fully automatic Chim M4 screen cleaning machine. Vision Supplies installed the machine ‘somewhere in England’ in August – but that’s as much detail as it is prepared to divulge. According to Paul Waterton, Managing Director of Vision Supplies, the Chim M4 cleans over 97% of screens without any further treatment whatsoever. At the same time, it thoroughly de-greases the screens before drying and feeding them into an eight-frame magazine ready for immediate re-use. The consequent savings made in time and money are astounding. Most screen cleaning machines use mainly organic solvents to remove ink. However, these solvents can chemically bind inks into the mesh, making stains and ghost images very difficult to remove. Most of the traditional chemicals used are unpleasant to handle and work with. In contrast the Chim M4, uses specially developed three in one surfactants to remove ink, stencil and grease residues completely in just a few minutes. The screens are then de-stained and de-ghosted before being rinsed with water under ultra high pressure, dried and fed into an automatic frame unloader. Just a few minutes

12 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

later, they are ready for re-use. The heart of the Chim system is the surfactant solutions*. Specially developed in Lyon, they contain no organic solvents and thus don’t damage the mesh or adhesive. The system therefore helps to prolong the life of the screen, while minimising the need for costly re-stretching. (One company which uses Chim cleaning solutions claims to have reduced screen re-stretching costs by over 60% during the last year). Neither flammable nor classified as hazardous, it is fully biodegradable to EC standards, and can be stored on the print shop floor. Explains Paul Waterton: “Each company uses a different combination of inks, meshes and stencils, which means that they also need a bespoke cleaning solution. A major advantage of the Chim system is that the proportions of the component surfactants can easily be adjusted to suit each user.” As well as treating the screens, the surfactant solutions keep the machine clean while integral filters ensure that waste products and deposits are completely removed. The product tanks are replenished and emptied automatically, making maintenance a quick and easy task – it takes less than 30 minutes to empty, clean and re-fill each section. Built from high-density

polypropylene and stainless steel, the units are also durable and aesthetically pleasing. All four models in the range are capable of running at up to 180 bar pressure - far higher than most other cleaning machines on the market. Operating at speeds of up to 500 mm per minute, they can handle screens of any size from 1000mm to 2400mm high. The entry level M1 is a semiautomatic closed loop washer/ decoater while the M2 and M3 have increasing levels of automation. The most sophisticated, the M4, consists of four in-line units and is fully automatic with user- friendly PLC controls. After sales support for Chim machines in the UK is provided by Registerprint and maintenance agreements of up to five years warranty are also available. "The UK company which recently bought the first M4 from us has been using Chim cleaning solutions for over two years," says Paul Waterton. "Previously they were spending thousands of pounds a year on anti-staining products and the associated labour costs were also astronomical. Thanks to the Chim system, all this has been eliminated, which is making a tremendous difference to their bottom line. Unsurprisingly, they are thrilled with their purchase – and want to keep it

their secret!" However this wasn’t the view of the latest purchaser. B & P Screenprint in Stockport, was so impressed with what it heard and saw about the Chim system that its Production Director, Tony Hollywood, travelled to view the equipment in operation in France, where it was demonstrated at two independent installations, which produced similar work to B & P. Tony says: "I had genuinely never seen a screen cleaning machine that could remove ink, stencil and ghost images in one pass. The results were amazing frame after frame was processed without any further treatment whatsoever." Upon his return to the UK, Tony recommended that B & P place an order! “I am delighted that B & P Screenprint are investing in our equipment and screen cleaning chemicals. It will also give us an opportunity to show other prospective UK customers just how efficient we can make the screen reclaiming process”, concludes Paul Waterton. Vision Supplies are the UK and Eire’s exclusive supplier of Chim ’92 machinery and screen cleaning chemicals. GBC Centurion increases productivity by 20% 2

The GBC Centurion2 in

action at Cartotecnica P2.

Cartotecnica P2, a print services provider based near Milan, benefited from productivity gains of almost 20% following the First European installation of the new GBC Centurion. This new highspeed thermal lamination system from GBC Films Group, was introduced in response to the everincreasing installed base of 102-cm wide commercial presses.

18 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

Cartotecnica P2, who chose the Centurian2 to replace its traditional laminating machine, was impressed with its high speed, flexibility and quality performance. Another strong point in the machine’s favour is its versatility, which enables it to run sheet sizes from 25 cm x 28 cm up to 102 cm x 140 cm at a maximum speed of 60 m/min, thus facilitating the use of a wide range of thermal lamination films. These include various thickness' and finishing characteristics and are available in a variety of options, such as glossy and matt polypropylene, acetate, linen and coloured metallic finished thermal films. Cartotecnica P2, presently use over 16.000 linear metres of film in a typical eighthour shift!

Based in Opera, Cartotecnica P2 was first established in the Milan area in 1979 and draws on three generations of experience in the paper-converting sector. Its current production facility covers an area of 2.000 sqm and is equipped with a complete range of machinery for paper conversion. The company, which serves clients in the advertising, packaging and publishing industries, on behalf of Northern Italian publishers and printers offers a diverse range of services such as lamination, varnishing, diecutting, mounting, folding and gluing, as well as manual finishing. It reports that its new purchase has enabled it to attain significant gains in efficiency. Rodolfo Pellegri, the company’s Managing Director, comments:

"Replacing a traditional laminating system with a device like the Centurion2, which uses pre-glued thermal film, has resulted in a number of important advantages. First of all, the new GBC system has allowed us to avoid human error – we no longer have to estimate the right quantity of glue to be applied on the film and makeready times and waste are reduced. Furthermore, the powdering and drying time is eliminated." He adds that the fact that the Centurion2 is a very user and environmentally friendly system, is yet another benefit. In fact, so enamoured is Cartotecnica P2 that it is planning to make the investment in a second machine in the very near future! For further information visit: www.gbcfilm.com

FESPA General Assembly update

a

Following last month’s comprehensive resumé of last year’s Fespa General Assembly we feature here some further country reports which were not included due to pressure on editorial space. The Portuguese Screenprinting Association, Apigraf, reported that Portugal is finally experiencing an export-led recovery from the recession, which followed the cyclical downturn since 2001, and which saw GDP fall by an estimated 1.3% in 2003. In 2005, the assumed sustained recovery of output is projected to raise annual growth of GDP to about 2 1/4%, and private consumption and investment are expected to gradually strengthen. At present, economic growth is being sustained by an increase in exports which increased significantly during 2004. Screenprinters however, are still facing a difficult economic situation and are having to deal with increased competition. One of the many problems that Portuguese screenprinters are having to cope with is e-auctions, where jobs go to the lowest bidder. Accordingly, Apigraf is seeking to draw up a recognised code of conduct to be approved by all interested 20 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

parties and will hopefully be able to present this to FESPA in the near future. As is usual, the Association will hold an annual general meeting which, in addition to the usual management business, will also cover the succession issues that relate to familyrun businesses. It will also be looking at technical subjects such as workflow. ARED, the Turkish Screenprinting Association reports that Turkey is now completely focused on taking its place in the European Union and is working hard to secure its membership. The Turkish economy has grown by 12.4% over the past year but unfortunately, the unemployment rate has also reached some 13 % and foreign investments remain lower than desirable. During the first five months of 2004, Turkey’s trade balance stood at $42.6 billion dollars worth of imports against $27.5 billion dollars worth of exports. On the other hand, GNP has shown an increase of $4500. As far as the screen sector is concerned, there are 820 printing companies of which 70% are Screenprinters and 29.5% are Digital Printers. The remaining 0.5% are using tampo printing and other printing techniques. Although in the past,

investment in screen-printing equipment has been quite low, the increasing popularity of outdoor advertising, has led to a significant increase in the acquisition of new kit, especially large screenprinting systems. Digital printers had a brisk start to the year thanks to the local elections which took place during March 2004 and this has led to a huge increase in the number of companies offering digital printing services. Many companies are also now becoming more aware of the advantages of UV curable inks, both in terms of their wider colour gamut and the environmental benefits. The Association has set up many working committees to help to improve technical standards within the industry and also to provide training facilities. It has also hosted many meetings with companies involved in the outdoor advertising sector. At the end of last year the Association sponsored the second Paper, Carton and Ink Press Symposium and exhibition, which took place in December.

The Romanian Screen, Pad and Digital Printing Association was anticipating both the general election, which was due to take place at the end of 2004 and EU accession. The incumbent government was expecting to achieve 5.2% economic growth, 9% inflation per year and 3.5% of GDP as deficit. They were also anticipating that the Government would introduce some populist measures in order to secure its re-election. However, the Association also felt that the election would provide an influx of work for many printing companies. It reports that presently, most investment in new equipment is being made in the digital sector, although screenprinting equipment is also being sold into the packaging and industrial sectors. Many printing companies are worried about the new environmental and quality demands that EU membership will bring and some are actively researching how other countries new to the EU have coped. Many new screen and digital suppliers have recently entered the Romanian market, but as yet, there has been no significant take-up of UV inks. Two large exhibitions, Reclama which is held in the Spring and the Print Show which is held in the Autumn, both in Bucharest, provided a welcome opportunity for member companies to attend seminars and to network generally. Currently, the Association is working hard to increase its database and to persuade more Romanian companies to attend FESPA 2005. The GPSF – the Professional Organisation for French Serigraphy boasts 130 members representing small and medium sized companies. It aims to protect the interests of the whole profession, not only its members and represents employers both in negotiations with unions and government bodies. Recently,

the membership has stagnated which to some extent can be explained by the general decline in political and social involvement in France. To overcome this problem, the Association is planning to generally improve its communication strategy, which, in the first instance, will involve setting up a new website. The Association has also chosen to improve its collective agreement and to ask the government to implement it throughout the whole printing sector. In spite of its limited means, it has also started negotiating with the unions, covering such topics as job classification, salaries, health and pension cover, training and relationships with social partners. The classification agreement was a genuine turning point, since it helped the Association to increase its legitimacy and improve its global image, with the unions in particular and social partners in general. It is currently negotiating for a wider application area for the collective agreement, which will include digital technology. The Association’s next initiative will be a renewed focus on professional training. It has set new qualification standards and will help schools to provide the requisite initial training. Environmental and waste processing issues continue to excite debate with regulations becoming more exacting as time goes on. The Association is thus planning to update its environmental guide, "Produire Popre en Serigraphie – Seriegraphy, - an environmentally firendly industry." With regard to the economic situation, the screenprinting sector is stable, although there has been a noticeable increase in production, turnover and sale prices since last year. Experts hint at an economic revival, but remain outwardly cautious as investments remain level, and international competition is high.

Boarding for the boat cruise just as dusk sets in.

According to a survey carried out amongst the Association’s members, the main reasons for this stagnation in growth is down to hiring difficulties, contributions and a lower demand. The Swiss Screenprinters' Association held its General Assembly during April and attracted 22 attendees. Honorary member Kurt Rutschi Wolfgang Lange of the Verband Werbetechnik (Federation of Advertising Technology) received an especially warm welcome, but since only 14 voting members were present, no issues of major importance could be formulated. However, discussions took place regarding the new structure of the Secretariat and Seripost Magazine. It is hoped that by circulating the Bulletin of the Association of Swiss Reprographic Companies alongside Seripost, it will appear to be a more attractive proposition for both advertisers and readers. Under the President's leadership, an editorial committee will be set up which will deal with financial matters and deadlines. The current Secretary, Walter Trösch, will be standing down and the Secretariat Agreement has thus been terminated. Until further notice, the Secretariat will be located at the same address as the President. No contributions have yet been made to the draft for the course module relating to large format digital printing. The Board will report on any further action at a later date. Following Wolfgang Lange’s plea for a closer co-operation between his Association and that of related industries such as screenprinting and reprographics when devising professional training, The Federation of Advertising Technology will prepare a study to discover what the different professions have in common. Thereafter, it will be be decided how a modular apprenticeship scheme, which will encompass the needs of all three associations, can be successfully launched. FESPA WORLD SPRING/05 21

In recent years he led a crusade to bring precision and process control to the screenprinting industry and many of the major companies have him to thank for their improved production techniques. His energy and expertise has taken G Bopp Limited from a modest business operating above a shop in North London, to a large and rapidly expanding industrial factory in Derbyshire. It is particularly poignant that Alan’s death occurred at a time when he was gently winding down towards retirement and finding, to his great delight, that his drives of the tee were extending as his golf handicap was reducing. It is difficult to believe that his

In heaven, harps will now be strung to the correct tension and of course, they will be either steel wire or low elongation polyester, whilst the frames will also be upgraded to deal with improved performance! Alan was truly one of those people who broke the mould. He leaves a widow, Lesley, his four children and two grandchildren, all of whom will miss him greatly. His sad and untimely death will also be deeply mourned by his staff, who he regarded as part of his extended family, together with the screen industry as a whole.

26 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

"Welcome to the Spring issue of FESPA World in which I hope you find everything you need to know about the forthcoming FESPA Event in Munich. The last 18 months have been an exciting time here in the FESPA head office, as we formulated a strategy that will hopefully ensure that this year’s show is bigger and better than ever before. And all the signs do indeed suggest that it will be a recordbreaking year, with over 400 exhibitors and in excess of 30,000 visitors attending FESPA 2005 between 3lst May to 4th June. What I now realise, is that for so many of our exhibitors, the FESPA exhibition really is the culmination of all of the effort and energy that they have expended on product development, research and marketing over the last several months. All that time spent testing and evaluating products, placing adverts and mailing prospective business leads suddenly becomes worthwhile, when finally, they have the opportunity to actually meet you, their customers and to show you their products and services at first hand. At last their business acquires an all important human dimension. For you, the visitor, the exhibition also presents an ideal opportunity to interact with all of your suppliers face-to-face and to raise all of those issues that aren’t usually covered in their promotional literature. And because FESPA is a ‘working exhibition’ all of your senses will be engaged. You will actually be able to see, feel, hear - and even smell – the equipment in action and will thus gain a much greater and more valuable depth of knowledge and understanding than you could ever glean from merely looking through catalogues and data sheets. What’s more, FESPA is much more than just another exhibition. In addition to being the single largest international showcase for all of the hundreds and thousands of products relevant to the screen and digital sectors, It also provides the perfect forum for everyone working within the

screen and digital sectors in whatever capacity and in whichever locality. There truly is no better networking opportunity in the World! But to get the best from FESPA, as with any other event, you do need to plan and prepare! To help you do this most effectively we have devoted the following 50 pages of this issue of FESPA World to ensuring that you can make the best possible use of the time that you spend at the show. I recommend that you take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the show layout and identify your ‘must-see’ exhibitors. To make everything as easy as possible, we have provided a separate floorplan for each of the four halls, which have all been organised so that they represent specific areas of interest. Each plan is accompanied with a list of all of the hall’s exhibitors, together with their stand numbers. We have also highlighted some of the companies you can expect to see in each of the halls and provided a brief resumé of the products they intend to display at the show. In addition, further information on all of the exhibitors is available on our easily searchable on-line catalogue, which you will find at www.fespa2005.com One undoubted ‘must-see’ for all visitors, are the Showcase Seminar theatres, which I am pleased to say, will be offering in excess of 40 sessions, all of which are completely free!! Many of these sessions will feature leading speakers (and specialists) from around the world and a small foretaste of the joys to come can be savoured by simply turning now to pages 34/35, where you will find the seminar timetable. So, equip yourself with a pad and pen, treat yourself to a coffee and settle back to plan how you can extract the maximum interest enjoyment and, most importantly of all, value, from FESPA 2005. I look forward to seeing you there!" Frazer Chesterman

Beer Gardens Munich's beer garden season lasts as long as the sun permits from spring to autumn. Two of the largest beer gardens are the Hirschgarten with 8,500 seats and the Augustiner in the Arnulfstrasse with 5,000. Other popular meeting places are the beer gardens at the Victuals Market, around the Chinese Tower in the English Gardens and the Waldwirtschaft (Forest Pub), where jazz livens things up.

Shopping Munich offers a shopping experience for everyone! Most visitors make an immediate beeline for the central pedestrian precinct in the old town centre, which meanders its way through

Kaufingerstrasse and Neuhauser Strasse, before culminating in Marienplatz. Here you will find department stores together with all of the most fashionable of German’s chain stores. Interspersed amongst them are a number of souvenir, record and jewellery shops. In Marienplatz pause at Dallmayr’s for a welcome cup of coffee and strudel, before exploring the Victuals market which is only a few steps away and offers a mouthwatering selection of fruit, vegetables, bread, cheese and many other tasty tidbits from all over the world. A few streets further on, is Sendlinger Strasse, which boasts a wide range of shops offering antiques, clothes, jewellery, furniture and home accessories. The streets and lanes north of the Tal, in the direction of Hofbräuhaus, is a Mecca for souvenir hunters, music lovers and football fans. Heading back across the Marienplatz there are tasteful boutiques in Theatreinstrasse, which in turn leads to Funfhole, five courtyards, which as well as shops, is home to the Hypobanjk Cultural Foundation, an art gallery famous for its spectacular exhibitions.

Entertainment Some 58 theatres offer a varied program of shows and music. The world's greatest opera and ballet stars appear in the Bavarian State Opera in the National Theatre. Other renowned theatres include the Gärtnerplatztheater und Prinzregententheater, which stages operetta, ballet and performances of the

theatre academy. Classical and modern elocution theatre is offered in many play houses such as in the Residenztheater, as well as at the Jutierhalle, Leonrodplatz, Dachauerstr. 110. The Deutsches Theater stages topical shows and musicals. Munich also has three large orchestras: the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian State Orchestra. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra has its own premises, the Philharmonic Hall in the Gasteig Cultural Center. In addition to the Philharmonic Hall (2,400 seats) and the Carl Orff Hall (600 seats), the Gasteig also provides a small Concert Hall (190 seats), a Black Box for workshop and studio theater and a Lecture Hall (136 seats). Jazz is extremely popular in Munich. Stars like Oscar Peterson and Lionel Hampton have given numerous guest performances in the Philharmonie at the Gasteig Arts Centre. In the renowned "Unterfahrt" club, open daily, in the Einstein Cultural Centre, top jazz players from the contemporary scene in Europe and the USA give regular performances. The Bayerischer Hof Hotel is another popular haunt for jazz fans and in addition jazz is played in a host of other clubs and pubs throughout the city. PAST AND PRESENT PRESIDENTS

all change

It’s three years since Ricardo Rodriguez Delgado was inaugurated as President of FESPA. Here, he reflects on his presidency with Val Hirst.

42 FESPA WORLD SPRING/05

Ricardo Rodriguez Delgado began his term of office in Madrid during FESPA 2002 and as he now freely admits, it wasn’t necessarily the most auspicious start. FESPA 2002 was, at that stage, the biggest exhibition that FESPA had ever hosted and it brought Ricardo face to face with both the practical and logistical realities of staging an international event of this ilk. As he rightly remarks, the exhibition was the Association’s main activity and it was becoming increasingly clear that if the show was going to continue to grow and prosper, it would have to be organised in a more direct and dynamic way. Ricardo’s first task as president was to persuade his fellow board members and other interested parties that the only way forward was to bring the show’s organisation in-house and for FESPA to hire its own professional exhibition team. Although this initiative originally met with some resistance, it is clearly a decision that has paid off handsomely. "Fespa 2005 in Munich will be on a different level than any FESPA, which has preceded it," proclaims Ricardo confidently, adding that in addition to the fact that with over 470 exhibitors, the show will be bigger than ever before, it has also attracted 130 completely new exhibitors. He says: "We had to meet the

challenges associated with offering the biggest screen and digital printing show in the world, and we didn’t feel that we could do that unless we enlisted the help of a highly qualified professional team. Very soon now, everyone active within the screen and digital sectors will converge in Munich in order to sell and buy products and services and to enjoy all of the ancillary activities that surround the show, and I don’t think they’ll leave disappointed. And, thanks to the efforts of the exhibition team, we now also have new FESPA shows to look forward to. The first of these, FESPA World Expo in India will take place in New Delhi 1st to 4th December of this year and plans are already well underway for the next FESPA in 2007. In addition, we are also organising a digital show in Amsterdam, 16-18 May 2006. None of this would have been possible previously." And if Ricardo is proud of the changes that have occurred regarding the organisation of the exhibition, he is equally enthusiastic about what he refers to as the new spirit of co-operation that exists within FESPA. "We are organising the FESPA World Expo in collaboration with the Screenprinting Association of India (SPAI) and welcome the possibility of initiating similar allegiances, which will be as mutually beneficial." he says.
