OPRESSION

KATHLEEN GALLAGHER

Kathleen is a visual artist born in British Columbia who resides in the quaint village of Steveston, BC. In her youth she travelled extensively throughout Northern Canada, exploring the ever varying landscapes. In 1982, she moved to Grande Prairie Alberta to attend a Visual Fine Arts program at the Regional College. Eventually, she returned to British Columbia, and after raising a family and following other career pursuits, she started to paint and exhibit her work again in 2009. Kathleen has a real connection to nature and the power and beauty of the natural environment is evident in her abstract expressionist landscape paintings. Kathleen is not trying to create a landscape she has seen, she says that she draws on memories and images from her outdoor travels and combines those images with her own emotional response. For instance, a reflection in the water gives her a sense of calm, a burst of colour can produce a sense of joy, and at times the landscape can have an eerie beauty, making her feel somewhat unsettled or profoundly awed. Whether she is painting in oils or watercolours and inks, Kathleenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paintings represent her love of nature, and as an environmentalist, the importance of preserving our earth. Kathleen does not limit her artistic practice to landscapes, she also has a passion for drawing the female form using inks and watercolours. Recently, Kathleen has been addressing the oppression of woman though her ink drawings. They are as powerful as her landscapes.
