HIGH FASHION ON A BUDGET? SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. BUT AT COUNCIL RE | SALE, YOU’LL FIND AN ALWAYS CHANG-ING, ALWAYS-WALLET-FRIENDLY SELECTION OF CLOTHING, ACCESSORIES AND HOME DÉCOR.
“Each day, we have a new store with new items,” says Susan Gertner, executive director of the National Council of Jewish Women, Michigan. (NCJW|MI is the guiding force behind the store.) The amount of donations Council Re|sale receives has drastically increased over the past few years, leading the thrift shop to expand its home décor room offerings as well as the higher-end clothing and accessories found in The Council Collection.
Curious shoppers will also find an “Etc…” room full of interesting miscellaneous items. And the best part is that as a way to say thank you to various members of the community, council re | sale features discounts every day of the week from Monday to Friday: members of the military, Berkley city employees, medical professionals, seniors 60+ and teachers and students each receive 20 percent on their designated day. Plus, anyone with a birthday can get 20 percent off during their birthday month.
WHILE THRIFT SHOPS DON’T NECESSARILY POP INTO MIND when someone says “sustainable,” they really should. “All items are donated – we do not purchase items,” Susan points out. “So anyone who shops here is also helping the environment by recycling clothing, accessories and home décor.”
Purchases and donations also support NCJW’s community service projects, which focus on improving the quality of life for women, children and families and safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. Over 800 volunteers take action annually to provide the organiz-ation’s community service projects, advocacy work and programming.
council re | sale has been a staple of downtown Berkley since 1990. (The original store opened its doors in Detroit in 1934.) Plenty of customers and staff are Berkley residents, but even if they aren’t, being on 12 Mile halfway between Coolidge and Greenfield means that the shop is easy for every-one to find, whether they’re shoppers or donors.
Spring and fall showcases are always big draws, and the store also holds special sales in tandem with Berkley city-wide events. To find out what’s happening, visit the council re | sale Facebook page or check out the events on their website.
