PROJECT BASED LEARNING KAMISHIBAI WORKSHOP (4th grade Primary Education) By Fernando Hidalgo

STRUCTURE OF THE PROJECT 1. Brief justification.

Students like to create stories and tell them to their peers. In order to do this in a more original way, we are going to work with the kamishibai (paper theatre), a technique that was born in Japan. They do not only have to make up the story but to draw it, colour it and tell it in public using the English language. 2. Time structure. There are two different periods. 

The teacher will join with the students in three meetings. In the first one the teacher will explain what a kamishibai is and how

to elaborate it. In the second one, we’ll know how the project is getting on and answer to possible doubts or problems, and in the third meeting, students will have finished their kamishibais and the teacher will correct mistakes. The whole process will take about one month and two months. 

The teacher will prepare rehearsals with his students at break in order to teach them how to manage the paper theatre and avoid making mistakes in its use. He will give his students the skills to speak in public, taking into account the pitch, intonation, rhytm, etc. This period will take about one or two weeks.

3. How will you organize groups. Justify it. In this particular case, groups will be made up of two or three pupils. It is possible a group of four, but, really, to tell the kamishibai is more practical just one or two students. In the last case, they need to coordinate between themselves in order to get a feeling of security and continuity in the story telling. 4. Objectives to achieve. There are three different objectives to achieve: 

Create a text in English telling a story.

Draw and colour the pictures of the story as if it were a comic.

Tell the story in public using different resources in order to get a domain of oral speaking in English.



Create an e-book with the stories using different programs.

5. Contents you would like to achieve. I would like they can use a simple vocabulary adapted to their level (4

th

grade in Primary). Just simple sentences in order to

communicate and be understood by their peers. It is also possible to include some cultural aspects in the story about a festival or a typical tradition in our country. 6. Driving questions. What is the most important aspect in the story? How did you organize the work? Was it easy to work with another person? 7. Activities proposed: investigation, outings, etc. If they want to tell a story about a festival or a cultural or social aspect, then, they can make a research about it. Kamishibai is with a small theatre made of wood but it can be also used as an ebook, though the effect is not so realistic. 8. ICT means students should use. As I told you before, it is not necessary any ICT mean, but we can adapt it and create an e-book with the issu or a power point presentation or prezi. The three of them are possible but it a variation of the original project which is quite simple.

9. What should they present at the end. At the end of the project they have to present the different pictures with the text at the back and they have to be able to tell the story in front of their peers. If they choose the ICT resources, they can present the story with the digital board. 10.

Evaluation means.

There are different ways of evaluation. For example, originality in the story, fluency in oral exposition of the story, using gestures as a back up for your words, etc.
