New Nordic-inspired range of partially recycled glasses

Inspired by Nordic street style; with a minimalist approach in design and a focus on individual expression, the new LUXe range from Specsavers Ópticas is applying both Nordic thinking and Nordic styling to their range. Now available in Spain, the range is classic, minimalist and partially made from bio-based acetate and recycled materials.

The beautifully crafted frames blend minimalistic design and classic chic styling. They feature soft textures, rich earthy tones, natural crystal shades and modern silhouettes, providing a clean and timeless look. Even the tiniest details have been considered, from the herringbone textured corewires to the two-tone laminated acetate temple tips. Every aspect of each frame adds to their overall refined aesthetic.

Sustainability was identified as one of the key drivers in buying decisions in a recent report from Specsavers Ópticas, making this range’s eco-credentials even more important. These frames are handcrafted from 52% bio-based acetate, made with materials like tree pulp, and the metal frames are made from 54% recycled metals.

Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas Guardamar commented, “It’s a pleasure to introduce this Nordic-inspired range to our stores. Scandinavians have a love affair with Spain and so it only seems right to introduce a range inspired by their style to the Costa Blanca, which many of them call home.

You can expect minimalist design with a focus on individual expression, a refined aesthetic and jewellery inspired details. Rich earthy tones and natural crystal shades offer a timeless, stylish look.

And when you take an even closer look at the LUXe range, you’ll find that our new Nordic streetstyle range of glasses don’t just look good, they’re made of good stuff too. So, you’re not just looking at Nordic style, but Nordic thinking too.”

You can find three Specsavers Ópticas stores in the south of Costa Blanca - in Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

House insurance - are you properly covered?

I regularly extoll the virtues of Liberty’s fully comprehensive house policy. When asking the right questions, you will discover that many house insurance policies are inadequate. Is your building size correct? Are your outside areas correctly covered – especially including pools and terraces? Do you have enough contents cover?

What Liberty Seguros offer today is the best. A specially designed policy for the Expats, with policy documents in English. The other very important issue when discussing house insurance is the amount of contents cover, always remembering that with Spanish Home insurance the kitchen is included in the contents, not the buildings.

There are optional extras that can be added to your policy, so that it is tailor made for your requirements, which include garden protection, Home Improved, which allows you to increase the aesthetic restoration and additional cover for valuable objects, and jewellery (conditions apply) and a further extra you can add to your policy is accidental damage, which is unique to Liberty Seguros and covers many breakages and claims within the home. Therefore can I please ask you all to double check the coverage of your home policies, whether you are with Jennifer Cunningham Insurance and Liberty, or another company, to understand the cover you actually have. Finding out you have the incorrect and insufficient coverage when you want to make a claim is far too late.

If you rent out your property, there is further Landlord Protection which provides cover for acts of vandalism by the tenant and also unpaid rent covers up to 6 months once a final judgement has been made legally. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact one of my offices and we will be able to give you the advice you require and answer any questions.

Just remember that your home is probably your most expensive asset, but there are also your personal belongings, which of course, needs the right protection.

If you require any further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

Our weekend in Mojacar was lovely, with lots of laughs, fantastic food and a few drinks to wash it down. We were fairly lucky with the weather, although we did have a bit of heavy rain, thankfully it didn't last too long and was in the evening where we could (and did) take cover in one of the lovely bars.

We are now on countdown to our cruise around the Med, so I'm trying hard to lose a little bit of weight in preparation for the weight gain whilst on board. We still have a few weeks yet to go, so a couple of shopping trips will have to be on the cards.

Already we are close to the schools breaking up for the summer, it always seems to come around so quickly. And the fiesta season will also soon be upon us with San Juan taking place on 24th June, and the start of Rojales fiestas of Moors & Christians being at the end of this month into early July.

Other dates for your diary are Father's Day on Sunday 18th June, Royal Ascot from 20th - 24th June with Ladies Day on Thursday 22nd. With many venues hosting this event it is a great excuse to get your glad rags on and have a little flutter. Until next time....

Who makes the best burger in Spain?

Seventeen of Spain’s best burger joints have been competing across the country in a bid to be crowned The Champions Burger 2023. The final stage is being held in Valencia from Thursday June 22 until Sunday July 9 with these votes being key to who will win the grand title.

What goes into creating the perfect burger? The right bread, perfectly-cooked meat, ingredients which work well together, the presentation and original ideas. All these elements have been put to the test to determine the best burger in Spain.

Heats have already been held in Castellón, Alicante, Madrid, Zaragoza, Sevilla and Málaga where people have been getting their teeth into the competing burgers and voting for their favourite. Now the final round takes place in the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia (Estadi Ciutat de València in valenciano and its official name), home to Levante UD.

This is a fun, family event where you can taste top burgers from food trucks competing for The Champions Burger 2023 title. You can vote for each burger you try, according to various criteria set by the organisers. Your vote will also be entered in a draw with the chance of winning a trip to New York.

Inflation; are you feeling the squeeze?

If you are reading this then you are probably in Spain and you need to know that inflation for the 12 months to the end of April 2023 was 4.1%. This means that €100 of cash in May 2022 will only buy you €95.90 of goods today, being June 2023.

The average inflation for the European Union was 8.1% (€100 in May 2022 will only buy you €91.90 of goods today) and for the UK it was 10.1% as at March 2023 (€100 in April 2022 will only buy you €89.90 of goods today).

What can you do about it?

Well, continuous history tells us we should be in for a positive bounce on the stock markets and as I, and many of my clients, invest in Brooks Macdonald portfolios I am hoping to see a bounce of 20% + very soon. Since January to March 2023 I have seen a 4.26% return on my money which is an indicator of sorts, but hopefully a decent bounce is around the corner. I suspect the catalyst for this bounce will come from 3 areas;

1) The release of more positive data that global and domestic inflation is under control as an effect of Government base rate interest hikes, which we are starting to see already.

2) Various financial reporting of individual company and sector reporting of surprise profit data which we are also starting to see.

3) The end of the Ukraine war which the recently Chinese have asked the Ukraine to talk and negotiate with the Kremlin. We of course all hope that means that Putin has expressed to China privately that he is willing to talk to bring this horror to a close.

So, position yourself with a stock market investment which of course I will advise upon depending on your circumstances. On top of that we have products that will help you avoid inheritance tax between spouses here in Spain along with income and capital gains tax avoidance. Remember avoidance is legal, evasion is not. Please call me and let's see if I can help. If you put this opportunity of timing the markets off, the value of your money will go backwards whilst sitting in the bank and that's a fact!

5 WEIRD CASES WHERE YOU DIDN'T EXPECT TO NEED TO EMPLOY AN ARCHITECT

1. When building work includes roofing an area, roofs increase the size of the property, or in other words, they transform exterior or semi-exterior space into interior space. So, an uncovered pergola (wooden frame) doesn't increase the size as it doesn't have a roof.

2. When they increase the number of rooms or when new uses are incorporated into the property, even if detached from the property.

3. When the building work you intend to execute is over 1.5 metres high. The minimum height to be considered for a room is 1.5 metres. So, a dog kennel is not considered a "built area" according to the Spanish system.

4. When it affects the property size you are paying for in the rates bills or the description of the escritura (title deeds). So, if the escritura and the rest of the property's legal paperwork becomes discrepant with the reality of the property or its use.

5. When it affects habitable conditions, ventilation, and light. According to Spanish rules, all rooms (except bathrooms) must be ventilated and have direct access to natural light. Enclosures sometimes cut off unlimited natural light and ventilation, making the affected premises illegal.

If done without a proper licence, the above building works will be subject to a fine and demolition/ legalisation order if detected by the Spanish authorities. The cost of fines will vary between town halls, the size of the extension, etc., but can easily be over 300€ per square metre. For example, a fine for a 10 square metre shed can easily reach 3,000€. It also affects the selling process. The above reasons, will devalue the price of the property if it is being marketed or will become a problem in the marketing process. Have you done any of the above in the past without a proper

licence? The Spanish planning system allows you to fix it by obtaining a retrospective licence from any qualified Spanish architect. The unlicenced extension can't be objected to by any authority, regardless of any future law changes.

The Conditions to obtain a Retrospective Licence are as follows:

• In Murcia, extensions must be at least 4 years old to obtain a retrospective licence.

• In Almeria, the building work needs to be over 6 years old.

• In Alicante, the building work needs to have been completed before August 2010.

No retrospective licences can be issued for extensions that have already received a fine or demolition order.

The price of a Pool Retrospective Licence (Certificate of Antiquity) is 229€ including VAT, and for extensions such as glazing, coverage, sheds, workshops, or any other extensions, it is 326€ including VAT (all extensions in the property included).

Martinez de la Casa Architects is the number one company for Building Certification, including Energy Performance Certificates (121€ including VAT) and Habitation/Occupation Licences and Retrospective Licences.

Celebrating the start of summer in Alicante

Enjoy a sizzling start to the summer with the hogueras fiesta in Alicante. Thousands of people will be heading to the city to see spectacular displays of enormous works of art, fireworks and music.

Traditionally, people living on the Costa Blanca have celebrated the arrival of summer by lighting bonfires on the beach on June 23. At midnight they would dance around the fires - or jump over them - throw firecrackers and go for a swim. Now, the tradition has grown into the marvellous Hogueras de San Juan fiesta. For several days, giant tongue-in-cheek statues are put up in the street - similar to the fallas fiesta in the Valencia region - and then burnt on the night of June 24.

All this is accompanied by live music and dancing as well as the mascletàs in the elegant Plaza de los Luceros - a fabulously-noisy pyrotechnic show at 2pm from Monday June 19 to Saturday June 24.

The main events are:

● The giant figures going up in various Alicante streets on Sunday June 18 and Monday June 19.

● An incredible firework display of a monumental palm tree from Mount Benacantil composed of 1,200 rockets and with a radius of 300 metres on Saturday June 24 at midnight. This is followed by the cremà or burning of the hoguera in the Plaza de Ayuntamiento followed by each of the other statues in turn.

● Fireworks competitions on Alicante’s El Postiguet beach from Sunday June 25 to Thursday June 29.

OUR UNSTABLE SUN - The next Carrington event

As a rule, astronomers, both professional and amateur don't go in for nasty things from space coming to Earth to do us harm. All those ugly monsters in films who for some peculiar reason want our planet, are entertaining, but that's all a complete load of dingos kidneys, to quote the late great Douglas Adams.

Unfortunately, like every rule, there is an exception, and it's not got bug eyes, it's down to pure physics, the physics of our Sun in this case. If you think that the Sun is a completely stable star, think again, it goes through a cycle of several years when it goes from calm to very active. In its active phase it produces a lot of sunspots and immense flares like bits of the Sun firing off into space. These flares are made up of plasma, a sort of super hot gas holding vast amounts of energy, much of it electrical.

The chances of one of these flares hitting the earth is quite small, we are just a tiny planet, so a flare has to be going just the right way to hit us, but it does happen. Luckily for us, the Earth, unlike the Moon or Mars has a magnetic field which can deflect most of the charged particles away from the planet's surface causing the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis in the southern hemisphere, what most of us call the northern lights.

Normally these can only be seen in the far north, but sometimes, the aurora can be seen much further south as happened just last month. This is all quite normal, the problem is that sometimes a truly gigantic flare comes our way, that breaks through to Earth's surface, in a manner of speaking, the air is filled with electrical energy.

Back in 1859 an amateur astronomer, Richard Carrington was observing the Sun when he saw a colossal flash of light. This was followed the next day with telegraph systems going haywire, operators getting huge electric shocks, and the aurora being observed right down to the tropics. There was so much electrical energy about that even a day later, the repaired telegraph systems would work without a battery. Earth's first recorded geomagnetic storm had been linked with a coronal mass ejection from the sun, and ever since then astronomers have kept a close watch on our sun.

You are probably wondering what will happen nowadays when a solar storm like that hits us, well, a lesser event in 1989 took out a large part of Canada's electrical grid plunging huge areas into darkness. Today we live in a much more interconnected society, a serious event will do an untold amount of harm. Just how much harm I'm not looking forward to finding out.

Next month I'll talk about some of the things space scientists have done to mitigate the impact of these solar storms and I'll explain a little about space weather.

GARDENING HINTS & TIPS from the Vega Baja Gardening Club HOW TO FEED YOUR PLANTS FOR FREE

Terms like eco friendly and environmentally safe seem to be everywhere these days, sometimes to get you to spend more on products for your garden. This month I'll give you a few tips about natural plant foods that keep money in your pocket.

Do you cook rice and rinse it first? Don't throw the rinse water away it's full of carbs and protein. Put the water on your plants, it's a great natural food for them. The same applies to the water you cook pasta or veg in, as long as you don't put salt in the water. Let the water cool and you have another feed. Even the water eggs are boiled in will have some calcium in it, in fact after you've peeled the eggs you can crush the shells and boil them a bit more. The mush you are left with can be put in the soil as a feed and aerator.

Do you keep fish? Old aquarium water is full of nutrients that plants love so put it on the garden instead of down the drain. Old banana skins and wood ashes from fires are an ancient and well known source of potassium, you can even steep the banana peels in water and use that.

I'm saving the most fun tip for last, it's for those of you with compost bins. Urine is a great accelerator for compost, so out you all go and pee into the compost, it works really well. No prizes for any jokes about that, I've heard them all, but do remind the chaps to watch out for nasty spiders!

Movers and Shakers

The Association of Movers and Shakers is a registered charity based in Almoradi working across the Costa Blanca area supporting people who are affected by Ataxia, Huntington’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease.

We offer a local contact point and mutual support in a friendly atmosphere, where families, carers and friends can share thoughts and experiences. We rely entirely on donations and money raised through fundraising events to support the work that we do. Please visit www.amscb.org.es or find us on Facebook: @Movers and Shakers

May was Huntington’s Disease Awareness Month

What is Huntington’s Disease?

You can’t catch Huntington’s, it is hereditary. Every child conceived by a parent with the Huntington’s (HD) gene has a 50% chance of inheriting it, no matter what their gender or race. The faulty gene causes the brain to slowly deteriorate, affecting the nervous system causing changes with movement, learning, thinking and emotions. It has been described as the most horrible disease known to mankind, as in most cases, the HD sufferer has seen the effects of the disease in their parents or siblings and know exactly what their future is.

So, imagine that you have Alzheimer’s – your brain loses its ability to understand things or recognise people.

Then, imagine that you have Motor Neurone – Your brain is OK but your body gradually disintegrates around you.

Then imagine that you have Parkinson’s – Your brain is OK but you lose control of your body causing uncontrollable movements. Then add Schizophrenia – which is so unpredictable and causes rapid changes of mental state and you are no longer yourself.

Put all these together and you have HD.

HD devastates lives and affects generations of families.

David Smith - In 2012, I was diagnosed with Huntington’s. I had put off having the test because I didn't see the point. I knew that I had it anyway and I didn't want to have my driving licence taken away and lose my independence.

My daughter was making plans to marry her boyfriend. She wanted to have the HD test but did not want to do so before me, so that prompted me to seek advice. I was not surprised by the result but none the less it was still hard to take. We made the brave decision to sell our house in the UK and move here to Spain. We liked the relaxed atmosphere and the better climate. I see a very good Neurologist in Orihuela, who is keeping an eye on me. Also, I have a good support network of friends, family and neighbours around me and know that when the time comes, they will be here for me. Since moving to Spain, we have met some other HD sufferers which has been a great help. It is good to talk to someone else in the same situation. We meet every Friday at “The Movers and Shakers Friday Club” at O´Briens in El Raso for a drink, a snack and a chat. Likewise partners, who are also our main carers can talk about what they are going through as it is not easy caring for someone who has a neurological disease. Although there is no cure for Huntington’s there is hope for future generations. There are a number of clinical trials hoping to suppress the effects. There is also a test that can be done on unborn foetus to detect the faulty gene. The parents then have the option to abort the pregnancy. This will eventually help to eradicate the disease. The good news is that I did manage to walk my daughter down the aisle, and she had the predictive blood test and she tested negative, which means that her and her husband can have children without the worry of passing on this terrible disease.

Crescendo International Choir Concerts

Crescendo International Choir performed a concert at a new venue on May 15, raising more than 200€ for ADISMON, a Spanish charity that helps disabled children integrate into normal life. The new venue was the School of Music and Culture in Los Montesinos. Hopefully, this will be the start of a successful relationship between this school and Crescendo Choir, according to Robin Myers, the new Crescendo Choir President.

On Saturday, June 17, in the evening, Crescendo Choir will perform its final concert before summer break, at the Club, located at Calle Toledo, 24, in Quesada.

Some of the songs performed at its most recent concert were the beautiful Prayer of St. Francis, with a solo by tenor Robin Myers, Make You Feel My Love, made famous by Adele, I Say a Little Prayer for You, made popular by Dione Warwick, The Rose, sung by Bette Midler and the well-loved Spanish song Amapola. The choral group also sang City of Stars, from the film LA LA Land, winner of six Academy Awards in 2017. For its finale, the choir sang a medley of songs from the musical Les Misérables.

For more details about the choir or upcoming events, please see crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at CrescendoTorrevieja. If you have questions, email info@crescendo-choir.com.

The choir would be delighted to have more singers, especially basses. This international group sings a variety of songs ranging from musicals to spirituals, from pop to classical, mostly in English or Spanish. Rehearsals take place at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos on Mondays between 17:45 to 20:00. All singers are welcome!

Another day, another rescue

Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre have recently welcomed their 188th rescue to the centre. Their newest arrival is an elderly donkey they have taken into their care after being contacted by Sax council. She was abandoned on a run down finca on a piece of land and concerned neighbours were feeding her.

Sue Weeding explained that the council then contacted them at the Rescue Centre and they arrived to collect the donkey. Police are involved in the case and Sue and her husband Rod, along with their volunteers, will continue to care for the donkey at the centre in Rojales.

“These rescues are only possible thanks to the kindness of our followers, either by donating furniture or items into one of our 3 charity shops or from attending one of our tours.” Sue said they can cater for groups and parties of people to visit and tour the Rescue Centre, and these are proving popular for people wanting to see the animals and view the work they do.

The Rescue Centre are awaiting approval for a farm licence. A fundraising campaign at the start of the year meant they have managed to complete all the shelters, and the stables have been rebuilt. It is hoped this work will give them the new licence and they are currently waiting for Government vets to come round for the final inspection.

Sue added: “Without our facilities and what we do, these animals would just be left where they are. There is no one like us in this area.”

For more information or to find out how you could help support, contact them via their website www.easyhorsecare.net or call Sue 652 021 980.

OUR OROSCOPE

Aries: The Full Moon in the ninth house suggests travel plans are in focus. You need to see things from a distance right now, to know what is your next move, and who’s going with you? Exciting times ahead!

Taurus: Venus, your planetary leader, in cahoots with Mars; takes on the fourth house. This is a harmonious time when peace and tranquillity offer you some respite from any conflict. Romance is on the cards too.

Gemini: The New Moon in your sign this month heralds a boost to your energies. Time to be uplifted and to focus on you and your own well being. Check out your diet and an exercise plan that you can stick to.

Cancer: With both the Sun and Mercury in your sign this month you are very much the star of the show. Your needs are a priority right now, so tap into that magnetic personality and have fun in all that you do.

Leo: The dynamic combination of Mercury and the Sun in your eleventh house sees your dreams and wishes becoming realities. And why not? Finally you meet someone who is on your wavelength and can facilitate.

Virgo: The fourth house is prevalent at the time of the Full Moon this month. Focus is on the home, as renovations are triggered and you are ready to embrace your family and all who really do matter to you now.

Libra: Pluto’s retrograde in the fourth house allows you to finally shed your skin and put your talents to good use. The only person that holds you back right now is you. Moving on is not running away, and it’s an option.

Scorpio: Mercury and the Sun tryst in the eighth house. You are needing answers and appear not to be getting them. Aspects are good for you now, so free yourself from doubt and fear and know who you really are!

Sagittarius: The retrograde of Pluto in the second house lasts until the end of this year. Dig deep if you have to, but the past is over and the actions of an ebullient Pluto bring abundance on all levels straight to your door.

Capricorn: Pluto retrogrades in your sign until the end of the year. Now you will experience a transformation as the Cosmos unites to restore your self respect and your innate powers of reasoning. Keep growing!

Aquarius: Be proactive amidst current changes. You above all are resourceful and highly motivated. What’s next? Venus and Mars in the seventh house bring a renewal to a relationship and put colour back in your cheek!

Pisces: Your dreams not only become realities this month but you discover that you are beginning to express yourself in a different way. The New Moon in your fourth house shines a light on caring and sharing.
