The importance of eye tests this Diabetes Day

www.femalefocusonline.com

Specsavers Ópticas on the Costa Blanca are reminding people of the importance of regular eye tests to support World Diabetes Day (14 November). Chantelle Hayward from Specsavers Ópticas in Calpe explains that many people with diabetes do not get any symptoms, which means it can take up to 10 years before they are diagnosed1. However, if it is left untreated it can cause damage to the eyes, heart, kidneys, and feet. Around 1 in 3 people with diabetes develop some form of eye health complication, according to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF)2. Chantelle explains: ‘14.8% of adults in Spain are living with diabetes3 and in Europe that number is over 61 million. Almost 1 in 2 adults (44%) with diabetes remain undiagnosed4. This means that there are 240 million people who are at risk of developing serious eye health complications and even sight loss.’ How diabetes affects your eyes A complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, which can occur when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the back of the eye. If left untreated it can cause blindness. Chantelle adds: ‘Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in working age adults, even in developed countries,5 so it’s hugely important that diabetes is detected early and monitored correctly to minimise the risk of avoidable sight loss. ‘At Specsavers Ópticas, we offer digital retinal photography free of charge as part of a standard eye test for customers aged over 40. This takes a detailed picture of the back of your eye allowing the blood vessels to be monitored more closely – helping to spot any signs of diabetes that might be present.’ There are Specsavers Ópticas stores in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. www.femalefocusonline.com As the nights draw in most of us will be now looking towards Christmas in one way or another. Having grandchildren makes me enjoy it all over again. Seeing them excited for the festivities is a joy. This year again I have promised myself not to over buy in the food department as we do not need to be finishing off all those Christmas must haves at Easter!

With all the shows and fairs I am sure that I will find the perfect present for everyone. It is lovely to buy something local and personal for them rather than more plastic from some global online conglomerate. Now do I dig out the duvet, snuggly pjs and jumpers or is that tempting fate? On the other hand I do not want to be caught out if we do get a cold spell - she says sitting in shorts and a t-shirt! Until next time, take care and be kind.

LOOKING AT TAURUS IN THE NIGHT SKY

www.femalefocusonline.com

November is a great time to have a look at some of the treasures of the night sky in Taurus. Most of us know of the bull constellation from astrology, in the real universe, it contains 2 of the most wonderful sights in the sky. These are the star clusters, the Pleiades and the Hyades Star clusters can be wondrous things, groups of stars close to each other, sometimes many hundreds of them, all kept near each other by gravity. This month if you go out on a clear night after about 9.30pm and look in the east, a little way above the horizon, you should see a sideways 'V' of stars, a bit like an arrowhead. These stars are the Hyades, which in mythology formed the nose of Taurus the bull. They're incredible cluster of stars, and one of the first things to look at for anyone starting with a telescope. Big telescopes have counted 132 stars, but even with a small telescope or binoculars we can see more than enough, to make a fabulous sight. Now for my favourite star cluster, M 45, the Pleiades, or 7 Sisters which is a little way above and to the right of the Hyades. It's difficult to miss, even on a poor night you should be able to see 4 or 5 stars very close together. Now look through your binoculars, it's a real ooh aah sight. Instead of 4 or 5 stars, you will see what looks a hundred, all surrounded in a thin gas cloud lit by the star Merope. The gas cloud used to be believed to be left over from the formation of these stars, a mere 500 million years ago, now we know the cluster just happens to be passing through it. This fabulous cluster is about 410 light years away so when the light you are seeing now began its journey to your eyes, king Charles the first was on the English throne. As with most clusters it's slowly dispersing, so if you want to see it, you only have 200 million years until it's gone! If you're the kind of person who likes to read, and enjoys a good story, it's worth looking up some of these names like the Pleiades, and how they were related to Orion. The ancient Greek stories and myths from which so many of our stars and constellations get their names are quite fascinating, and very often downright weird to our modern sensibilities. It's also surprising how many modern great books have pinched story lines and themes from the ancients. That's all for this month, next month I'll be answering a few of the questions that I've received recently, until then, enjoy your star gazing. ● To find out more about observing and astronomy why not join our group, email us at vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com to find out more.

Financial Advice from our family to yours Have you considered taxation on your assets, both ongoing and on your demise? As the saying goes – the only two certainties in life are death and taxes. Unfortunately, we cannot help you with the first, but we are able to offer advice on the latter. Many of us pay tax on a yearly basis, whether that be income tax on employment earnings or pension income, or capital gains tax on investment growth. However, none of us want to pay more tax than we need to. The first step to minimising any current or future tax liability is to have a good understanding of the tax system in your country of residence. Ideally, this should include some information on the taxes which are applicable to you, the tax tables (i.e. brackets via which income is taxed at different percentages) and any available allowances which you may be able to use to reduce any liability. Knowing when tax returns are due often gives clients time to prepare, ensuring peace of mind. Tax planning would be straightforward if all countries had identical systems, but unfortunately that is not the case. For example, the UK's tax year runs from April to April, whereas the Spanish tax year runs in line with the calendar year, January to December. From a financial planning point of view, careful consideration needs to be given when clients make the move from UK to Spain, or vice versa. Calculating taxes in Spain is also considerably more complex than in the UK; a country which generally works on the basis of “one rule for everyone”. Comparatively, Spain's autonomous regions have the power to set their own rules, so it is not uncommon to see a difference in taxes depending on an individual's circumstances. This is especially true for Inheritance Tax, often a key consideration for overseas residents. For us, this highlights one of the major benefits of working with a fully qualified and regulated firm; one which fully understands the tax system. Attentive tax planning and the potential use of flexible, tax-efficient investment vehicles can prove extremely beneficial for residents who wish to make use of all their available allowances. These potential solutions are not only cost-effective, but allow you to retain access to 100% of the capital from day 1, assuming your adviser works on a fee-only basis like us. If you would like to discuss any questions or queries you have about tax, investments or how they interact here in Spain, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Stop Smoking

Tobacco is a killer. People who smoke or use other forms of tobacco are more likely to develop diseases and die earlier than those who do not. Quitting smoking is one of the most important actions people can take to improve their health. This is true regardless of their age or how long they have been smoking. Quitting smoking: • improves health status and enhances quality of life. • reduces the risk of premature death and can add as much as 10 years to life expectancy. • reduces the risk for many adverse health effects, including poor reproductive health outcomes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cancer. • benefits people already diagnosed with coronary heart disease or COPD. • reduces the financial burden that smoking places on people who smoke, healthcare systems, and society. While quitting earlier in life yields greater health benefits, quitting smoking is beneficial to health at any age. Even people who have smoked for many years or have smoked heavily will benefit from stopping. Now available is a new medication to enable you to quit smoking permanently in 25 days. This revolutionary treatment works by relieving the anxiety caused through the quitting process, by gradually reducing nicotine levels, relieving withdrawal symptoms and the dependence upon smoking. ● Clinica Britannia, Ejércitos Españoles 16, 1st Floor, Calpe. NATURAL LIPS TO ADMIRE 2 SYRINGES FOR 1 IN NOVEMBER Most women long for beautifully shaped lips - perfectly symmetrical, beautifully shaped and hydrated.

Many of us suffer with dry, chapped, uneven lips. Unfortunately, as we age our lips lose the volume they had in youth. Sometimes enhancing and defining the lips is all that is needed, but generally after the age of 40 lips start to turn inwards and develop lipstick "bleeding" lines. Mouth corners droop and give us a sad appearance, nose to mouth lines get more pronounced as do the puppet (marionette) lines, and the whole mouth area appears flatter.

There is still a lot of anxiety around the treatment of lips and most of us have seen celebrities on TV with lips that look "overdone" or the famous "trout pout". This causes a lot of unnecessary worry and fear that lips will look unnatural.

Shinefinity zero lift Glaze - Wella

www.femalefocusonline.com

COVID had an amazing impact on businesses world wide. But narrowing it down to the hairdressing industry which I would do being a salon owner at Mimiskru. How many clients grew their hair colour out!! Amazing!! Some clients looked great without their artificial colour and their natural grey hair distinguished their looks and complexion. Where some sadly got taken into the storm of fashion and ended up aging themselves by 20 years. Luckily we as a team at Mimiskru have helped encourage those clients that come to us to have an alternative look of colour; we as a Wella salon offer free consultations on each service that we offer. Colours here in Spain do have a major impact with our glorious sun shine! They fade and can result in the hair becoming dry and brittle and lose their original vibrancy when first achieved from a salon. As a great addition to the Wella Colour range, they have brought out the new SHINEFINITY zero lift glaze; something that suits all. A gloss to shine up your grey hair or natural blonde, brunette, black etc, it puts a glaze of shine to any natural colour you have without altering any tones on natural, coloured, chemically treated, porous and grey hair. Or there is a colour choice of natural, cool, warm or boosters to enhance your target or natural colour. For example we have silver pearl which will neutralise golden tones or enhance natural grey tones. Vanilla glaze - we would recommend this for enhancing reds or fade the first signs of grey. A great tone for the lightest blondes also. Most popular is the Clear Crystal Glaze great for that 6 week shine on natural hair. It’s most popular with our grey haired clients offering translucent results. There are several colour choices to choose from. Shinefinity can also be added into your regular colour to boost extreme shine. It’s also great for root blend, taking that extreme line away from just having a root tint. What’s also great about this product is it’s semi permanent, lasts 6 weeks. It combines PH balanced technology with a touch of hair friendly dye. It gives a translucent glowing look with Zero damage, Zero lifting, Zero ammonia, Zero silicone, and Zero drying alcohols. It is gentle on the hair, a great add on to your cut and blowdry, give your hair a boost with SHINE! Special offer at Mimiskru 30€. (Treatment only) Testimonial: Brenda 18/10/23 - Thankyou girls for my shiny hair! Was quite nervous as you know! But! Amazing result! Hasn’t altered my hair colour which was what I wanted. A great improvement to my silver hair. Oh! Loved the coffee and chat also. Brenda with the Beagle xx Book online www.mimiskruhairandbeauty.com. Ciudad Patricia Celebrates 40 Years

On 10th October, Residents, Staff, Guests and Dignitaries gathered at Ciudad Patricia to celebrate their 40th anniversary. The day-long celebrations began at 10 with a Batuca – a drum band – leading residents from the main entrance to the Central Building. The mayor of Benidorm gave a speech where he highlighted the importance of Adriano Care's – the owners of Ciudad Patirica - commitment to the resort: "This project is much more than a business project. If we talk about the history of Ciudad Patricia in these 40 years, we talk about 40 years of attention and happiness. Especially for all those who today share life in Benidorm, but who come from other places. I want to congratulate all those who have made it possible for Ciudad Patricia and this project to celebrate its birthday, and tell them that in Benidorm we are delighted with this vital model of senior living, thank them for having opted for this city and tell them from the heart that we consider them full Benidormenses. Benidorm is proud of everything they are doing and we hope to continue working together on this project so that the integration and connection of Benidorm and Ciudad Patricia is full." Javier Picón, partner of Azora (of which Adriano Care is part) commented: "Ciudad Patricia is much more than a set of buildings; It is a multicultural community with more than eight nationalities represented. And that diversity is what makes it unique. A year ago, Adriano Care acquired the Ciudad Patricia family, contributing its commitment to the development of housing solutions for our seniors, improving the well-being and comfort of residents." In addition, he also wanted to highlight that "we are working with the aim of strengthening the ties of Ciudad Patricia with Benidorm and the rest of the nearby towns, making the complex a meeting place for residents, friends and institutions." The day continued with performances from the choir and various live acts, along with a community paella and mini-fair. Ciudad Patricia continues to be the leading independent senior resort of the region and is looking forward to offering a unique solution for seniors who value safety, community and independence in their golden years. Visit Ciudad Patricia on their open day on Thursday 16th November to find out more about their new way of retirement living. See their main advert in the magazine for more details.

Turrón – A quintessential Spanish treat

By Rhona Wells - rhonawells@hotmail.com Turrón – Spain’s traditionally crafted nougat-style candy – is a mixture of highquality natural ingredients including almonds, sugars, and honey which, according to the EL PAIS newspaper, is an industry that generates about €400 million a year. Not many foods can boast such an impressive global market but these Spanish delicacies made – as tradition demands – with the highest quality ingredients have gained a high level of international status over the years. The recipe was likely brought to Al-Andalus, the area of the Iberian Peninsula under Islamic rule for more than 700 years, from the Middle East. The Moors brought with them a large array of recipes and a rich culinary heritage. One of the first references to a treat named “turun” appears in an 11th century document named ‘De medicinis et cibis semplicibus‘ which was written by an Arab doctor. Food historians agree that the earliest form of turrón was made in the Arabic peninsula before the culinary treat would spread across other parts of Spain to Italy, France and gradually, the rest of the world. All versions of the confection’s name appear to have been derived from the Latin ‘torrere’ (to toast), leading to the belief that a similar sweetmeat may have existed in Ancient Rome, where their poets alluded to a similar confection named cupedia or cupeto. The ancient Greeks are also believed to have their own particular version. However, contemporary turrón, was first made about 500 years ago in the Spanish town of Jijona (Xixona). Traditionally, its production was small scale and mostly domestic, carried out by individual families for high days and holidays, but most especially during the lead up to Christmas. According to information dating back to 1582, certain employers would offer turrón to their workers as a special Christmas gift in appreciation of their work throughout the rest of the year. King Felipe II, who ruled Spain during the second half of the 16th century was said to be a great fan of the product and praised it so much, its popularity at Court and beyond increased significantly. With this royal seal of approval demand for turrón spread across the country and eventually, on to Cuba, across parts of the Caribbean, and later to Latin America. There are two major families of turrón, based on the cities from which they originate. Turrón de Alicante (also known as turrón duro), from the southeastern coastal Spanish city, uses whole Marcona almonds, which are bound together with whipped egg whites, honey, and sugar. The candy is crunchy, nutty, and sweet. Turrón de Jijona (also known as turrón blando), from a small town 30km inland from Alicante, is made with ground Marcona almonds, whose extra oil gives the turrón a rich, chewy texture. Many families keep a box of turrónes on hand for parties or last-minute guests, as it makes a perfect accompaniment for afternoon coffee or an after-dinner bottle of Cava. Thirty years ago almost all turrón recipes followed the same specifications, but more recently, new products and methods have been added to the original products. There are currently dozens of varieties: chocolate with puffed rice or whole almonds; a variety of chocolate pralines, with or without liquor, candied fruits or whole nuts; fruit pralines; and even sugarless variations. Quite what King Felipe II would have made of such changes, we can only imagine.

Your Nº1 Artificial Grass Company

Here at Artificial Grass Spain, we are your Nº1 choice for Artificial Grass in Spain. Not only because of our expertise, our commitment to getting it right, our high-quality products, but because we are thinking about tomorrow. We have just come out of a great meeting with one of our grass suppliers and we have really been looking at tomorrow’s technologies regarding artificial grass. We have a selection of these products already available, but it means the technology is now in place to take things to the next step in terms of even better grasses for the future. They have extra drainage, better breathability making the grass even cooler to walk on and are cleaner and more pet friendly. We can also offer blended grass allowing the use of artificial grass to aid the growth of natural grass in areas where natural grass alone struggles such as golf course pathways and parks around children’s play areas. So with a combination of technology and care for the environment we can start to cover more bases and offer more product to clients. I think the big thing for me is knowing that we are at the forefront of an industry that understands the value and truth behind its products, but still wants to improve them and make them even better and even more environmentally compliant. We all know the way forward for the world is to use science and technology along with nature to make the best of what we can, given certain scenarios. The simple facts are that growing a successful lawn here in Spain is, costly, is a lot of hard work, is expensive and is unfortunately not as environmentally friendly as many people may believe it is. And therefore, to offer people the best available solutions to keep green in their lives, to have even less of an environmental impact through our modern tech grasses for me is just brilliant. It’s a great sign of great things to come and should be something that really helps people who currently don’t understand the benefits of artificial grass, even less to worry about as we move forward into a green lush future that’s better for everything. Walk Your Way Well with Niamh O'Sheehan

Who knows the expression "All roads lead to Rome?" Well, I've got news for you! ALL ROADS LEAD TO SANTIAGO! A pilgrimage. A life journey. And did you know it passes our Costa Blanca doorstep? I've got the bug. Join me! There are many reasons why people choose to walk the Camino de Santiago. Some of the most common reasons include: 1. Spiritual or religious reasons - The Camino de Santiago is an important religious pilgrimage for many Catholics, who walk the route in order to pay homage to the remains of the apostle Saint James, which are said to rest in the city of Santiago de Compostela. But its so much more than that.... 2. Physical and mental challenge - Walking the Camino is a physical and mental challenge that requires a lot of endurance, strength, and perseverance. Many people choose to walk the Camino as a personal challenge, to push themselves out of their comfort zone and test their limits. 3. Meeting new people and learning about different cultures - Walking the Camino is a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world. You'll walk alongside other pilgrims, share stories, and make lasting friendships. Human connection is key to our happiness. 4. Finding inner peace - can be a deeply spiritual experience for many people, who find that the solitude and natural beauty of the route help to quiet their minds and find inner peace. And we all need more of that! Ultimately, the reasons why people choose to walk the Camino de Santiago are as varied as the people themselves. If you'd like to participate in one of my CAMINO SANTIAGO TASTER HIKES then drop me a WhatsApp. We do these once a month. They are both fun and full fulling +34 676 507 791.
