COSTA BLANCA NORTH Serving the community since 1993 FREE october 2023 PROUDLY CELEBRATING 30 YEARS SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY

The image which captures the essence of Spain

Followers of Specsavers Ópticas’ social media channels voted on the picture they think best reflects and captures the essence of Spain last month.

Kristine Aghasyan was selected as the winner, with the largest amount of likes and comments across their Instagram and Facebook pages. Kristine’s beautiful image depicts what she describes as a “romantic sunset”, seen through the rocks at La Mata in Torrevieja. This striking and well composed image encapsulates the rugged beauty of the Spanish coastal areas and the importance of the sea to the communities along the 4,964 kilometres of coastline. It was a firm favourite amongst the jury who shortlisted the entries and the voting public, getting over 300 likes and over 100 comments to win a landslide victory. This talented photographer has won a €100 Amazon voucher and a pair of designer sunglasses.

Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar was one of the three store directors to shortlist the top entries and commented, “I was very impressed with the high standard of entries we received for this years’ competition. There were 58 pictures submitted for us to judge and we thought they were so good, that we could only get the shortlist down to eight entries, before handing over to our followers to have their say and select the winner.

Thanks so much to everyone who submitted an entry and for everyone who took the time to vote. Kristine is a worthy winner and I would like to congratulate her on behalf of all of the team!”

You can see the shortlisted entries on Specsavers Opticas’ via social media - @SpecsaversOpticas on Facebook and @specsaversspain on Instagram. Find out more about the optical group and book an eye test in your nearest store via their website www.specsavers.es

Health Insurance Cover

I appreciate everything has changed due to Brexit, but it is now far more important to have health insurance. You need to make sure there is an English speaker who can help you understand exactly what you are purchasing and how to use it.

Of course, ASSSA health policies are accepted for your Residencia, TIE and both Non Lucrative and Digital Nomad visa applications and they provide the legal certification required for the process and my consultants will be able to guide you with the correct policy necessary for your visa process.

It is vital you follow the guidelines for using the policy, especially in regards to emergencies and hospitalisation. You may find yourself with a hefty bill to pay, if you do not follow the correct procedures. If you decide to use the Spanish National Health, you will be required to provide a SIP card, EHIC or payment before treatment.

The Spanish health system is stretched and of course this means waiting lists. ASSSA provides hospitals, clinics, specialists and doctors, many of whom speak several languages to make your health decisions easier and faster.

Obviously if you are in acute pain, you do need to discover what is causing it and within the national health this can take many months to resolve and private health care offers the opportunity to speed up the process. ASSSA also provide emergency cover and their own ambulances, where you will be taken to a hospital related to ASSSA, which you find in your ASSSA book.

My company has an ASSSA administrator to help answer your questions, process your authorisation requests and liaise with ASSSA on your behalf if you should so wish.

Yes, there are many cheaper options that you could consider. Do not be tempted by the price, you will not get what you need or expect. All private health insurance in Spain are limited in certain areas and be sure to understand these limitations before purchasing.

Unlike health insurance in the UK you will be pleasantly surprised at the prices here in Spain. The difference is the Spanish government encourages the use of private health care, therefore the prices and the taxes are far lower than you may think.

As you can see from the front page this month we are proudly celebrating 30 years of publishing magazines on the Costa Blanca.

A lot has changed over these years from the small black and white magazine delivered out of the back of a car. We now have four magazines which continue to be well supported by the English speaking community throughout the Costa Blanca. Thanks must go to our advertisers, some who have been with us for the entire journey, our amazing team and of course the community. Without all of you we would not be here today.

This month is also darling daughter and gorgeous granddaughters' birthdays so lots of cake will be eaten, thankfully not baked by me! There are lots of events coming up over the next few months so get your diary to hand and enjoy this month's edition.

Until next time, take care and be kind.

THE NIGHT SKY IN OCTOBERWHAT TO LOOK FOR IN THE SKY THIS MONTH

October is like the start of the star gazing season for many of us, the sky gets much darker than in the summer months, and we tend to have clearer skies too.

There are a few things to look out for this month, firstly we will be treated to a partial Lunar eclipse on the 28th, it's not something of importance but it's always fun and pretty to look at. If you look for the Moon in the south east around 10pm, you will notice a small chunk is covered by Earth's shadow. The eclipse as a whole lasts for a few hours, so you don't need exact timing to go out and enjoy it.

Next we come to Saturn, I've banged on about Saturn a lot in the past, so I'll just remind everyone that now is the best time to see the rings whilst they appear open to us on Earth. For the next few years they will become edge on to us before opening up and be worth seeing again in 2027, and regaining their full majesty in 2032. That's a long time to wait if you miss them over the next couple of months.

Now we come to Jupiter, that fabulous, huge colourful planet, over 1300 times the volume of our Earth. It's mostly made up of hydrogen and helium with an interesting garnish of other things like Nitrogen, which is why it's called a gas giant. Nitrogen and hydrogen can combine to become ammonia, and it's this gas which predominates in the incredible clouds we can see through even a small astronomical telescope. In November this year Jupiter reaches something called opposition, that means that it lies directly opposite the Sun in our sky so it will be visible all night long. This is a great time to go outside and see it. With the naked eye it's a colourful blob, with binoculars, you can see a tiny disk, and make out 4 of the 80 or so moons. With a decent telescope things get really interesting, you'll be able to see the great red spot, a seemingly endless storm much bigger than the Earth as it roars it's way around the planet. I do mean roars, even my pathetic home made radio telescope can pick up lots of radio noise from old Jove. You'll find Jupiter rising in the east, and is best viewed after 10pm. Quite near Jupiter the famous star cluster the Pleiades is beginning to rise into the autumn skies, the glorious seven sisters. It's easily seen with the naked eye, but it blossoms into a stupendous mass of newly born stars through a pair of binoculars or small telescope.

That's all for this month, enjoy your star and planet watching.

Financial Advice from our family to yours

What factors separate one adviser from another?

What should investors be looking out for when engaging with a financial adviser?

Iam sure many of us will have found ourselves in a situation where we have gone ahead with the first piece of advice a specialist recommends to us, especially if they are in a field which we are not overly familiar with. However, sometimes it pays to seek a second opinion.

In our industry as financial advisers, we come across many clients who assume that all advisers do exactly the same job on exactly the same terms. In reality, this is not the case.

Although many advisers have the same solutions available to them, some might be restricted in the products they can offer, and others may favour one product over another at outset. Does this mean that they are finding the best and most suitable solution for your needs? Perhaps not.

Other areas where advice companies can also differ are;

 Charges: Even if different advisers recommend the same product to you, this does not automatically mean it will cost you the same amount. We know from experience that there is a significant difference in the amounts each adviser will charge a client so it is definitely worth making sure you fully understand all of the fees.

 Regulation: The majority of firms will be regulated via some jurisdiction, but it is always worth checking you know exactly where. It will protect you as an investor.

 Qualifications: There is currently no “minimum standard” here in Spain like there is in the UK, but qualifications highlight credentials and knowledge. In the UK, the minimum standard to advise clients is Diploma status (level 4) but a lot of advisers in Spain have not reached this level.

 Personality & Trust: A financial adviser, client/ family relationship should be built for the long-term. It is therefore important to really feel comfortable with the adviser you are dealing with.

If you sit down with an adviser and they seem reluctant to let you seek a second opinion, or you feel rushed into making a decision, it is probably because the adviser knows that they might come out as second best in at least one of the categories mentioned in this article.

At Logic, we never shy away from clients who want to “shop around”. To the contrary, we actively encourage it as we know it will showcase the benefits of choosing our company. We have been told by a number of our existing clients that you cannot underestimate the benefits of working with a family run business. Aside from the level of trust this provides, it is also noticeable how clients warm to the fact that we treat them as “our clients” as opposed to “his” or “her” client, which they may have experienced in the past.

6 reasons to choose us:

1 We are fully regulated and licensed.

2 We have multiple advisers qualified to UK diploma level.

3 We are an award-winning family run business.

4 We disclose any remuneration and are 100% transparent.

5 We have over 45 years combined experience.

6 We pride ourselves on the personal touch. Next time you have a financial concern, why not get in contact with us to discover the difference?

Digital Smile Design

We all have things we would like to change about our bodies, and for many of us this includes our smile, especially if we have teeth that are crooked, yellow, misshapen, or missing altogether. Many of us may find ourselves in need of restorative treatment due to injury, illness, or other issues that can impact our oral health and the appearance of our teeth.

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a new unique digital dental treatment planning tool that could help give you a perfect dazzling smile within weeks at a more economical cost than you would imagine.

DSD strengthens a dentist’s diagnostic vision, enhances predictability, and improves communication between dentist and patient.

A treatment plan is completely based on a thorough analysis of the patient’s dental and facial proportions.

Using videos, photographs, and teeth models, DSD dental teams can get a better sense of the relationship between the lips, gums, and teeth, as well as how they work together to create the perfect smile.

One of the biggest advantages of this amazing technology is that patients can see the smile preview before they begin the procedure. They can work with the dentist to modify colour, shape, and even the length of the teeth to create their ideal smile.

Make an appointment now with our Dental Department to start on the road to achieving the smile of your dreams.

10 WAYS TO RESCUE YOUR SKIN AFTER THE SUMMER

After a summer of sun, our skin becomes dry and lacklustre. UVA radiation gives rise to 'crepey' skin on our cheeks and neck and folds and wrinkles become more pronounced due to lack of hydration. Not to mention hyper-pigmentation and age spots on our faces, chests and hands. This, combined with natural aging factors such as lower oestrogen levels after the age of 35 and depletion of collagen in the skin, create wrinkles that become like scars.

October is the best time of year to start treating the skin.

1 - The skin must be assessed by a specialist to determine the depth of the pigmentation and skin damage that has occurred. The appropriate treatment to brighten your skin will be decided.

2 - Peels The depth of the skin peel chosen will depend on the damage your skin has suffered to renew the top layers of your epidermis or dermis.

3 - IPL is fantastic for age spots and post summer acne prone skin.

4 - ND yag laser For red thread veins.

5 - Botox October is the best time to have Botox as it will stop those wrinkles from moving and so prevent them from becoming worse and more visible. Remember during the summer months we move our facial muscles in excess to protect our eyes from the sun’s rays.

6 - Hyaluronic acid and Profhilo Hyaluronic acid comes in different viscosities. It can be used to hydrate the skin to give it a more youthful appearance, to fill the fine summer wrinkles or to restructure the deeper cheek wrinkles.

7 - Radiesse is calcium hydroxyapatite found in bones and teeth and encourages the production of collagen beneath the skin so is ideal for restructuring the skin around the cheeks – its effects last over 18 months.

8 - Threads If after the summer you start to feel as if your face has dropped and that you are beginning to look saggy, then threads will pull up those folds and give you your V shape back again.

9 - Home care with Retinol will help to encourage skin renewal but always check with your medical aesthetics specialist as to which percentage is the best for your skin. He/ She will also advise you as to which medical creams are best for your skin condition.

10 - Book an appointment on 96 579 3810 with Dr Carolyn Carbasse at Zen Smile Spa, our medical aesthetics specialist able to restore your skin after a summer of sun and late nights!

Benidorm gears up to become a low emissions zone

The final steps are being taken to turn Benidorm into a Low Emissions Zone next year. Cities in Spain with a population of more than 50,000 residents have to comply with the Climate Change and Energy Transition Law to fight against air pollution that was approved in 2021 and will be implemented in 2024.

Following the busy summer season in Benidorm, the council is now putting the final works in place to control access to and parking in streets within the LEZ to certain vehicles. The restrictions will be rolled out across the seaside resort and will be fully implemented after the Benidorm festivals in November.

Other towns in the Alicante province which have to create LEZs are Alcoy, Alicante, Elche, Elda, Orihuela, San Vicente del Raspeig and Torrevieja.

Vehicles will be categorised according to their year of registration and the type of fuel they use. Car owners need to display a badge to show which category their vehicle falls under. There are four categories:

● a blue Zero emissions label. Vehicles qualifying for this include electric cars and certain plug-in hybrids.

● a green and blue Eco badge for vehicles such as plug-in hybrids with a range of less than 40km, non plug-in hybrids, and vehicles powered by natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas.

● a C green sticker for passenger cars and light petrol vehicles registered from January 2006, diesel vans and passenger cars registered from 2014, and vehicles with more than eight seats or heavier vehicles registered from 2014.

● a yellow B sticker for some older vehicles.

Some vehicles, which are more than around 20 years old will not qualify for a badge. To check which category your vehicle is in, you can use the DGT tool at https://sede.dgt.gob.es/es/vehiculos/distintivo-ambiental

EVE TAYLORS powerful botanical essences and the amazing benefits they bring set her skincare products apart, which is why Mimiskru is one of her stockists. Essential oils are the planet’s purest ingredients, derived from nature’s plants, including flowers, leaves, roots, bark and fruit peel. Aromatherapy & Essential Oils

Aromatherapy is the practical use of essential oils; Lynette at Mimiskru sets an amazing facial to suit all skin types using the Eve Taylor Aromatherapy product range. Our most popular facial at present is; The SKIN QUENCHING FACIAL created as the perfect offering to intensively hydrate parched skin. It is suitable as a pre or post holiday treatment, for those who often experience skin dehydration due to drying air conditioning, as well as those of us who like the sun, such as myself, as enjoying the sun's rays for that perfect tan certainly dries out the skin.

This treatment lasts 60 minutes enjoying the benefits of facial cleansing massage with our Eve Taylor facial brush, a skin analysis using our magnifying lamp, exfoliation, steam, toner with medium massage to face, neck and decollete, masque, warm steam towel to remove masque, spritz toner, refining eye gel, finishing with a solar protected moisturiser. All experienced with soft music and Eve Taylor scented candles.

OTHER FACIALS WE OFFER

Rejuvenating Facial

This rejuvenating, lifting and firming facial uses Eve Taylor's age resist products including a cryogenic anti-ageing mask and the eye contour mask. The procedure described is the same as above. This facial restores skin to create a revitalised and radiant complexion, instantly improving the appearance of fine lines and skin suppleness. I have to say as an aftercare serum I do recommend the Eve Taylor Aromatic

Rejuvenating Serum Nº6. Both me and Trudi use this serum daily. It leaves your skin supple with a nice youthful glow. It supports and reinforces menopausal and post-menopausal skin, skin experiencing loss of lipids, elasticity and texture, and is intensive moisturising.

HYDRO FACIAL

The benefits include a more hydrated, bright, plump, and clear complexion. Plus, it can also improve signs of aging. 'The treatment reduces fine lines and wrinkles, increases firmness, evens tone, texture, and brown spots, as well as reduces enlarged pores'.

Christmas Fayres in aid of the Friends Of The Children Of Emaús

The first Emmaus association was formed by Abbé Pierre in Paris after the Second World War, with the intention of helping the thousands of men, and orphans, left without homes and jobs, who were living on the Parisian streets. There are now Emmaus Associations all over the world, helping the homeless young and old. Friends of the Children of Emaús (CIF: G-54138805) was inaugurated in 2007 with the intention of helping the children in the eight Emaús homes on the Costa Blanca.

These homes have since been taken over by the Association Salud y Comunidad, who is taking care of 125 children in total. Children who have no other home to go to, either because of an impossible family environment, or in some cases because they have no family at all. We are involved in helping the shelters on the Costa Blanca. Most of the Shelters house up to eight children at a time, with the aim of creating as much of a family environment as possible, however, the largest of the Shelters in Altea can house up to thirty children.

Some of the Shelters now have immigrant children who have arrived on the coast, after a dangerous journey at sea, alone and with no family.

The Friends of the Children of EMAÚS's sole purpose, is to help in whatever way we can to improve the lives of the children. To do this we run fund-raising events and work with other groups, businesses, and individuals to raise money to buy much needed items for the children. Our most important fund raising events are now the Christmas Fayres at Salones el Carrasco in Jávea, on the Sundays 5th and 26th of November, from 11am to 5pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

Coffee, Welsh cakes and a huge helping of useful information.

On a stormy rainy day, there was a warm welcome for visitors and members of the European Union of Women Mujeres en Igualdad Marina Alta (EUWMA) who came to listen to the five presentations following the theme: Women and Health.

Thank you to Katy Pitt Allen (The Women's Health Clinic, Jávea), Christina Knights (holistic physiotherapist, Medifit), Isabel Garrido and Manuela Escriva (Micro-nutritionists), Kathleen Misson (Agora Project, Mujeres en Igualdad) and Inma Llobell (Social Services Benitachell).

It was a full house and the information given by the speakers was much appreciated by all. One member explained 'we shared ideals and an eagerness to learn how to help breach the gender gap by standing together and allowing things to unfold in front of our eyes'. Another said 'I had no idea these meetings were so fascinating!' If you are interested in joining us, the next events and further information can be found on Facebook 'European Union of Women Marina Alta' or search EUWMA or you can email euwmarinaalta@gmail.com.

Next EUWMA meeting: The next meeting is on 24 October at 19.30 - Tapas evening. The European Union of Women: its history, its networks and its future. Venue to be confirmed. We will also be present at the Wellbeing Health and Beauty and Lifestyle Expo, Carrasco, Jávea 17 and 18 November. Come and meet us there!

10th anniversary of Alicante's mushroom street

Alicante’s iconic Calle San Francisco with its yellow painted road, giant mushrooms and snails looks like something from a top children’s film. But 10 years ago, things were very different. This central part of the city was rundown and many of the shops were closed on the main road connecting Avenida del Dr Gadea with the Rambla.

Sonia Castedo was the mayor of Alicante from 2008 to 2014 and she searched throughout Europe to find inspiration to make an area which would be attractive to children, somewhere for them to play. She found what she was looking for in a street in Strasbourg, which was the work of an Alicante artist Pachi. They held a meeting and, thus, the idea of the mushroom street began to emerge.

The artworks breathed new life into the street, which is now a major attraction with tour guides and visitors from the cruise ships stopping off here, as well as being a place for local children to play safely.

Today, there is concern about the area looking tired and needing more care. Alicante council is now working on a project to transform Calle San Francisco during 2024 including repainting the road and replacing the children’s games and soft flooring, Calle San Francisco is in the centre of Alicante between Avenida del Dr Gadea and the Rambla de Mendez Nuñez. At either end are two ornate squares - Plaza Calvo Sotelo and Plaza Portal De Elche, built in the 19th century as a meeting point for residents.

Musical delights at the Alicante theatre

The Teatro Principal de Alicante sees in the autumn months with a variety of shows for all ages.

Highlights include A Meeting with the Blues featuring top artistes Dorrey Lyles and Marcos Coll backed by the Medicine Man blues band. The show takes place on Friday October 13, with tickets priced from €15.

From Thursday October 26 to Sunday October 29, the Alicante stage is transformed into 1950s Rydell High for the ever-popular teen musical Grease bringing alive the story of Danny and Sandy, the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies while reliving classic Grease songs such as You're

The One That I Want,

Hopelessly

Devoted

To You and Summer Nights. The songs have been translated and adapted by Alejandro Serrano and David Serrano.

On Thursday November 2, Opera 2001 brings Mozart's Don Giovanni to the stage. Widely regarded as one of the greatest operas of all time, the story follows the nobleman's stories of seduction and his ultimate downfall.

Tickets for all shows are available from the Teatro Principal de Alicante website https://www.teatroprincipaldealicante.com/

POPPY APPEAL LAUNCH 2023

The Poppy Appeal 2023 will be launched in Spain with a ceremony in Benidorm on Saturday, 14th October.

It starts with a Parade of Standards from Calle Castelló, stepping off at 13.00 and arriving at the dais at Rincon de Loix at approximately 13.15.

We will be welcoming representatives from the British Embassy in Madrid and its local Consulates, Royal British Legion Headquarters in London and Benidorm Town Hall as our guests at this key event.

Below is just one story of how we help veterans and their families throughout the Costa Blanca

RBL Jávea Branch Case Study

Neil Saunders previously served in the Royal Navy as an Operator Mechanic. Following his service, he completed additional training and had a successful career as a Refrigeration Engineer. Neil had been working for his latest company for eleven years and following a transfer to Jávea Spain, he and his wife made the decision to buy a house and move to Jávea permanently. All was well and they were settling into their new life, however, after four years, his contract was suddenly terminated with no warning.

Neil felt he had nowhere to turn and described feeling the lowest he had ever been. He had a wife and two young girls to support, a Spanish mortgage and bills, but suddenly had no way of earning the money he was used to in order to manage these.

Feeling desperate, Neil contacted the Royal British Legion for help and described feeling immediately put at ease. Pam Twissell-Cross RBL District Community Support Coordinator, guided Neil through the process of seeking legal advice and helped him to obtain the information he needed to get help through the Spanish system. She also assisted with emergency funds to help Neil and his family manage their immediate bills.

Debbie Brettle RBL Volunteer Caseworker from the Jávea Branch was allocated Neil's case and made contact with him to discuss his needs and complete a full assessment. After much thought and discussion Neil decided that he would like to work for himself as a Marine Refrigeration Engineer. He had the qualifications for this, but needed his own tools to set himself up successfully.

Neil had used all his savings to keep on top of his bills and had also received financial help from family members, so was worried that self-employment would not be a viable option. Debbie compiled a case for what he needed and a business plan, along with an application for funding was submitted to the RBL. Neil was delighted that the application was successful and he was able to purchase the tools that he required to set himself up as a self-employed engineer. Since becoming self-employed Neil has had lots of ups and downs, but is now a well-respected engineer within his industry. He works as a sub-contractor for two very big firms in Mallorca and also teaches marine refrigeration.

Neil stated " I would not be in this position without the support of the Royal British Legion and outstanding people who dedicate their free time to helping people like myself. I hope to do the same for someone else one day".

Neil is now a member of the Jávea Branch and is just one of the many beneficiaries that have been supported by the Royal British Legion in Spain. All of the money raised in Spain remains here and with the generous support of the public during the Poppy Appeal, we can continue to support many more people like him.

New Requirements for Public Liability Insurance for Dogs

If you own a dog as a pet, then under imminent new laws you’ll need to have public liability insurance. For some dogs, which are classed as ‘dangerous breeds’, the cost of insurance is a little higher than non-dangerous breeds. In fact, if your dog is crossed with a dangerous breed, it is classed as such. How do you know if your dog is a dangerous breed, well, it should be noted in the information when your dog was ‘chipped’.

Dangerous breeds include: Akita Inu, American Staffy, Boxer, BullMastiff, Dobermann, Dogo Argentino, Dogo de Burdeos, Dogo del Tibet, Fila Brasileiro, Mastín Napolitano, Presa Canario, Pit Bull Terrier, Presa Malloquín, Rotweiler, Staffordhire Bull Terrier, and Tosa Japonés (please check with authorities or insurance company for definitive list).

Am I Already Insured?

If you have your home and contents policy with Insurance Altea, you are probably already insured. There are some conditions such as your home must be your primary residence in which you are living.

How Can I Prove I Have Cover?

At Insurance Altea, we are able to issue a certificate of cover (much like car insurance) which will record the details of your dog including the chip number

How Much Does It Cost?

In fact, all Insurance Altea home/contents policies have been adapted to cover for dogs with the exception of dangerous dogs. If you have a dangerous dog, this must be declared and there is a small extra cost to cover this.

What If I Don’t Have Cover?

Quite simply, you may be fined for not having public liability insurance for your dog, and of course if your dog causes any damage to property or persons, you will be liable for all those costs which can be enormous!

To be 100% sure, call Insurance Altea and ask. We can advise on what homes/contents policy you need and provide a very competitive quote. You can visit our offices on the N332 in Altea, or call 660 236 874 or email natalie@insurancealtea.es

Sustaining an ancient industry

In these days of high tech, when our vehicles are fuelled by oil derivatives, electricity or a combination of exotic sounding gases, it is unusual to see any vehicle propelled by old-fashioned muscle. Except in Xaló (Jalon), and especially at this time of year, when horse drawn carts are commonplace on the town’s main highways. A multitude of horses pull old style drays, piled high with bunches of freshly picked grapes, delivering the product of the local harvest to the various wineries in Xaló .

The town’s main winery building was built in the early 1960s, as a sort of members collective. Initially materials were gleaned from the members themselves; local producers who provided presses, tanks, barrels and other essential equipment. At the same time the ‘strength in numbers’ principle was helping to make the wine production less of a physical strain on individual members, the combined wisdom and skills of the group was contributing to improving the general quality of the wine produced from our fertile region especially the noble and highly revered Fondilóns.

The Fondillón is regarded by many as the jewel in the crown of the wines of Alicante. It is defined as wine that has achieved its high alcohol content naturally, through its fermentation process – or solera – and is generally regarded as being one of the most important historical wines of Europe. Dating back to at least the 15th Century, a true Fondilón must be made with only the Monastrell grape of Alicante.

Over the years the Xaló area has witnessed the growth and development of other wineries; adapted to new technologies and become famous for its high quality wines. At the same time the wineries maintain local outlets where less esteemed but still very acceptable table wines, can still be purchased in plastic containers of five litres or more.

Spain has over 1.2 million hectares (2.9 million acres) devoted to grape cultivation for use in wine making, making it the most densely planted wine-producing nation, and the second largest producer of wine in the world, after Italy and ahead of France and the United States.

The grape varieties of our own region are many and varied, heralding from beyond a time anyone can remember. Being blessed with various soil varieties has helped diversification of the grapes of the Costa Blanca and the delectable finished product.

History tells us that by around 1472 the Muslim peasants of the Vall de Xaló cultivated an important source of grapes for the already well established wine making merchants of the kingdom of Valencia.

The Entertainers’ Autumn Programme

The Entertainers kicked off their autumn season by performing for Jalon Valley Help at one of their Los Arcos BYO picnic evenings. They had many new songs and as usual they were well rehearsed. With the garden lights and the ladies sparkling in their sequined dress it was a magnificent evening. Once again The Entertainers gave each member of the group opportunities to perform, with The Dollies, Dolly & Gee, also performing different dances to each of the songs throughout the show - to encourage us to get up and dance. If you missed The Entertainers last week they will be back:

26th October – at Los Arcos for Jalon Valley Help,

29th October – at Los Arcos for APROP,

24th November – at El Verger Indoor Auditorium for SCAN,

16th December – Benidoleg Indoor Gig for Dementia,

17th December – Xmas Fayre show at Beniarbeig Theatre. Also they will be presenting their Carols in the Square, Jalon/ Alcalali/Orba, for JVH between 4th to 12th December. We look forward to seeing you at their very special shows, where you will be helping to raise money for local charities. For further information see their Facebook page 'The Entertainers Marina Alta'.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, Roman Muscat plantations proliferated in the lowlands of our area while, around the same period, other varieties such as Girónet, used for wines and raisins, occupied the mountain slopes.

In the highlands of the area, at least 400m above sea level, grapes including Bernia, Cau, Planises and Maserol proliferated in the more stony soils, often laid to terraces. The celebrated Giró grape, which produces an excellent red wine also found favour in this sort of ground.

The more clay-based soil of the midlands, in areas such as Alcalalí, provided perfect conditions for the cultivation of Pasulas and Cutes, which are perfect for “the Malvarosso”. Meanwhile, the soft wines of Pla de Lliber (with deep, fertile soils) are ideal for a variety of locally produced rosés.

The heat waves of last year caused a downturn in the local grape harvest and consequently reduced production but there is optimism that this year – 2023 – will prove to be a bumper crop for the region’s vintners.

Jalon Valley Help – Always Ready To Help

Come rain or oppressive heat the members and volunteers at Jalon Valley Help are always ready to help those in need in our community. Many of us only know JVH through visiting their shops, in Jalon/Alcalali/Orba, or through attending one of their events, however, there is lots going on behind these scene. The shops have to be stocked, from cards and books to the sale of donated clothes and furniture which have to be collected and prepared before being put on display in the shops.

Their drop-in centre, at the Animo in Alcalali, provides a place to go when you are alone, cancer care advice, afternoon tea and skills groups.

Medical equipment has to be acquired, set up in readiness for its loan to those in need when they return from hospital as they get older and delivered when called upon.

Funds have to be raised to purchase equipment, to make donations to other charities and causes, such as the Ukrainian refugees and the Men’s Hostel in Gandia. To do this JVH arrange events and have donation programmes, from collecting tins to regular donation plans.

Like an iceberg – there is much more going on beneath the surface, and whilst everything can be seen to be going smoothly, beneath the surface the swan’s legs are always moving!!

The Entertainers will be back for JVH at Los Arcos again on 26th October, when they are promising plenty of show stoppers. Contact JVH through eventsjvh@gmail.com for tickets to this BYO picnic.

We look forward to seeing you in JVH shops, at the Animo Centre or attending an event as in that way you will be helping JVH support even more people who are in need in our community, which for JVH spreads well beyond the valleys of Jalon and Orba. For further information about the charity see their website www.jalonvalleyhelp.com

Local Freemasons Raise Money for Charity at their Ascot Evening

Last month the Freemasons Jávea Lodge Nº40 hosted a fabulous evening of fun and entertainment with a charity Race Night and Ascot evening.

Over 50 members, partners and guests enjoyed a warm summer evening at Casa de la Pizza near Jávea, where charity was the focus as well as enjoying all the fun of the races. 6 horse races and a final piglet race entertained the ¨punters¨ and a best lady's hat and gentleman's most ¨leary¨ shirt competitions added to the fun.

A magnificent 750€ was raised and this will be donated to the Raquel Paya special needs school in Denia and Project4all in Benissa, who care for the homeless and hungry in our area.

To find out more about Freemasonry in general or in the Valencia region, please call Peter on 618 017 201.

The ukulele group of U3A Denia

came back together with their usual day of strumming and singing following the summer break. They were kindly hosted for the day by one of their members. The group called the Ukaholics also enjoyed a lunch tapas contributed by every member. This group, which is one of thirty within U3A Denia, is very popular with a large membership and they meet each Monday morning to play their ukuleles and sing.

Pick n Mix Visit Murla

What a fabulous day we had in Murla, where U3A Vall del Pop had their first monthly meeting after their summer break. More than one hundred members turned out to attend and listen to all the updated news from U3A Vall del Pop along with entertainment by the U3A Denia guitar group known as Pick N Mix.

Pick n Mix were treated to a delicious Devon cream tea, courtesy of one of the lady members of U3A Vall del Pop and it was thoroughly devoured prior to their performance.

Pick n Mix played a variety of ten songs from the 1960s through to modern hits, and also had two solo performances: one from Ann Kerr, who entertained with the melodium and also from husband. Doug who did his own rendition of two old classic songs from his days as a skiffle group member.

The members of U3A Vall del Pop thoroughly enjoyed the performance and many members were asking when we would return?

Richard Millington President U3A Denia.

The picture was kindly taken by Paul Corazzo Vice President U3A Vall del Pop. Members of Pick n Mix are Richard, Cazzie, Philip, Doug, Ann, Clare, Graham Jo, Gill and Pete.

Save yourself years of hassle, stress, and expenditure

I have recently been contacted by a client who wishes to have artificial grass installed. The main reason is that he has a natural lawn, which he has been trying, with the aid of his gardener to restore back to life. After two years of trying, he has decided “it looks like a field and it’s just not worth the effort”. These are his words not mine.

What I always try and imagine is the whole process of what has gone on for this client to reach this point of frustration. There are a whole heap of scenarios which may or may not have happened that I have put together in my own head, but I can probably say there is a good chance that some of them are true.

&The first being that they clearly wanted to have a natural lawn, something I am not opposed to at all. The gardener probably said yes, it won´t be a problem to do that. But to achieve this probably means at the minimum a revision and repair or at worst, a do over of the irrigation system, maybe some top dressing, some weed and feed chemicals, then constant maintenance for two years plus other charges, extra water charges, the list of expenses goes on and on. Now I’m not saying that the gardener is wrong to do this, they have a business, their client has asked them to do something, and they want to make money from that decision. But as I have pointed out in other articles, did the gardener truly examine two main factors. Firstly, the immediate environment of the garden. Are there any pine trees nearby? Where does the sun rise and set? And, what shadows are cast over the area? Then a second key question. Did they dig any holes to establish the depth and quality of soil under the lawn area? Because the truth is without these things being known and understood, then the whole thing can be and in this case was, a gigantic waste of time, energy and money. Many people have reservations about artificial grass, but the simple facts are, if we had laid artificial grass two years ago for that client he would have a green lush lawn that required basically zero maintenance, no water, no additional cost and for the environmentalists out there, no dirty lawn mowers or vans or chemical feeds for two years, to just decide it was a waste of time. On the other side of this story, I have new clients who have asked for artificial grass to be laid at their house here. These clients have already had artificial grass at there house in London, and as many of my clients already tell me, “It was the best thing we ever did”. The simple facts are that as a very experienced gardener, garden designer and landscaper who has also been in Spain for over 20 years I am telling you, having a natural lawn is achievable, but at a price and only if things have been set up correctly in the first place. For me knowing the kind of clients and people who purchase property here that just doesn’t fit with 99%.

So, save yourself years of hassle, stress, and expenditure - you can have an artificial lawn installed today, use it tomorrow and enjoy it for many years to come with no mess or problems.

Regular readers of the Focus On magazine will know I bang on about walking like it’s the be-all and end-all! Well, it kind of was for me. It changed my life for the better in so many ways. Especially when it came to my emotional and mental well-being. Let me tell you WHY walking can be an incredible salve to the struggles we face every day. And remember, it’s easy, free, accessible and fun!

Stress Reduction: Walking, especially in natural settings like parks or forests, can help reduce stress levels. The combination of physical activity and exposure to nature has a wonderfully calming effect on the mind, reducing stress hormones like cortisol.

Improved Mood: Walking stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Sounds good right!? This can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety and improve overall mood. The rhythmic motion of walking and the release of endorphins can counteract anxiety symptoms.

Enhanced Cognitive Function: Regular walking has been linked to improved cognitive function, including better memory, attention, and creativity. It can help clear your mind and enhance problem-solving abilities. If it gets too much then get out there!

Better Sleep: Regular physical activity, including walking, can improve sleep quality. It can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep, which is essential for good mental health. And boy, do I love my sleep!

Increased Self-Esteem: Engaging in physical activity like walking can boost self-esteem and self-confidence. Achieving fitness goals, or simply feeling better physically, can have a positive impact on how you perceive yourself. We all deserve this.

Social Interaction: Walking with friends or in group settings provides an opportunity for social interaction and connection. Socialising while walking can reduce feelings of loneliness and improve overall mental well-being.

Stimulation of Creativity: Many people find that walking helps stimulate creative thinking. It can be a time when ideas flow more freely and problem-solving becomes easier. It works for me!

Stress Management: Walking can serve as a healthy coping mechanism for dealing with stress. It provides a well-earned break from daily stressors and offers a chance to clear your boggled mind and regain perspective.

It's important to note that the benefits of walking on mental health can vary from person to person, and the frequency and duration of walking may also play a role. Incorporating regular walks into your routine can be a valuable component of a holistic approach to mental well-being. If you’d like to walk with me (or just talk with me) please drop me a line on WhatsApp +34 676 507 791 and let’s get you moving!

Recycling and Upcycling why the Cancer Care Jávea Charity Shop Concept is such a great idea

Recycling/upcycling plays a major role in the sustainability criteria of the economy and environment. It develops the notion of "for all forever" in a globe of finite resources. For the fashion sector recycling contributes to the elimination of waste through the reuse of materials and finished garments, conservation of the environment in particular reduction in landfill and pollution through redirection of waste to alternative uses and preservation of natural resources including water and natural fibres through a model in which the same materials can be used over and over again.

Our Cancer Care Jávea shop, accepts goods as donations which are then sold and all the proceeds are passed to Cancer Care. Alternatively, customers can open a client account and place their property for sale by the shops. The client retains 50% of the sale price and donates the remaining 50% to Cancer Care.

To become a client, we require your NIE or Passport Number and for you to complete a registration form and agree to the Terms and Conditions. You also need to bring a minimum of five acceptable items on your first registration as a client.

Our Cancer Care Chic Boutique offers designer second hand clothes, shoes, jewellery and handbags. Customers can sell their items on the same basis as our Cancer Care Jávea Shop, but we also accept good quality, clean and well-presented items as donations.

There is plenty of free parking available.

It’s a fun and savvy way to sell your goods and clothes for cash – pat yourselves on the back for recycling, but most of all, the fact that you know that 50% will go straight into the charity’s account to be used to directly help people whose lives have been affected by Cancer.

Our Boutique is in La Plaza just off the main Cap de La Nau Road, ample parking and in a tranquil plaza of cafes and restaurants.

Our Cancer Care Jávea shop is located in Jávea Park, just off Av de Paris. We are situated on a crescent walkway, linking a few shops and cafes.

For more information on the charity please visit our website: https://cancercarejavea.org/

The Original Charity Shop and Library help Project4All

In response to an appeal for help, the Original Charity Shop and Library has donated 2,000€ to Project4all. This organisation was set up to help the homeless on the streets of Alicante and all along the Costa Blanca. They provide meals, bedding, tents, clothes and other necessities to those in need on the streets, as well as supporting families who are trying to survive on a very basic income. They have now opened a Half Way House to encourage and assist homeless people to make the transition from the streets back to work.

The Original Charity Shop is situated on Carrer de Nancy 1 in Javea’s Arenal, the Library/ Bookshop can be found in Javea Park. Come and visit our shop where you will find lots of bargains, or pop around to the Bookshop to shop for some great summer reads. We are open Monday to Saturday from 10 to 1pm. New volunteers are always welcome, so if you have a morning to spare why not come along and speak to the manager of the day about joining us.
