To quote the American author athaniel awthorne Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind” and suddenly we, a group of Andy Cairn’s friends, have realised that it is now nearly 12 months since Andy’s passing. At his funeral in January this year, many people who knew him offered practical and financial support if a memorial shoot were to be organized in his name and, guess what... we have only gone and done it!

The memorial shoot will take place at Grange Farm Sporting Clays, Newtown Unthank, Leicestershire on Saturday 8 November 2025, with Help for Heroes and Macmillan Cancer Support the chosen charities. Adam Curtis, the Proprietor and Head Course Setter at Grange Farm, has generously agreed to donate a large proportion of the £30 entrance fee to these charities, with any other donations received in Andy’s name going towards raffle pri es and or to these charities.

The 60-target, eight stand course will include three stations on the Skeet range, Super-Sporting layouts, challenging and fun English Sporting layouts and three stations on a Double Rise type stand plus the chance to win a prize by hitting one of the random “Flash” clays.

There will a High Gun prize of £150 plus a trophy. But, instead of high-gun pri es in each classification, every competitor will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win cash prizes, shooting related items, cartridges, free future competition entries, a food hamper, bottles of spirits and many other prizes.

Re-entries will be accepted with each entry being included in the prize draw so the more times you enter the higher your chance of winning a prize.

So, if you’re a AAA shooter averaging or a lass competitor new to the sport, please come along for a fun day out and a chance to win a prize. You’ll be helping to support two worthwhile causes. Mark the date on your calendar, check Grange Farm Sporting Clays website for opening times and directions, and we’ll see you there. Terry Corcoran and Doug King.

BALDWIN’S GATE GUN CLUB CHARITY SHOOT

On Sunday 20 July 2025, Baldwins Gate Gun Club in Staffordshire, held a charity shoot and raised £3,000. £2,000 went to Brain Tumour Support and £1,000 went to the Dougie Mac Hospice Charity. A very successful morning, only made possible by the extraordinary efforts from Michael O’Reilly, who spearheaded this event. An enormous thanks to Mick and all the members who attended the event, and the guns who attended to support these two very worthy causes. Thank you all.

A TOUGH START, BUT EYES ON THE PRIZE

It’s been a testing opening chapter in Derek Redmond’s journey to A Class Skeet shooting, but the former Olympian remains upbeat about the road ahead.

Training under the watchful eye of Matt Stockdale – better known as “the Skeet coach” – Derek has faced the steep learning curve that every new Skeet shooter must tackle. The precision and consistency required have proven to be a different challenge from his athletic days, but Derek is relishing the process.

“Skeet is tough –there’s no hiding from that,” Derek admits.

“Some days the targets seem impossible, but every tough round teaches me something new. I know progress isn’t instant, but I believe in Matt’s system and in the work I’m putting in.”

Matt echoes the sentiment, praising Derek’s resilience and determination.

“What Derek brings is the mindset of a competitor. Skeet isn’t about overnight success; it’s about building the habits that deliver results under pressure. He’s applying that athlete’s mentality to shooting.”

With hundreds of targets behind him and many more to come, Derek remains focused on the long-term goal. For him, the challenge is far from over – but the optimism is clear: “I’m in this to improve, to learn, and to see how far I can go.”

MEET THE TEAM

CLARE HENEY: COURSES COORDINATOR

CPSA Courses Coordinator, Clare Heney, shares insight into her role.

I’ve been part of the CPSA team for seven years now, and some of you may know me from my involvement with the England Teams or from seeing me at various CPSA Championships.

Since January, I’ve stepped into the role of Courses Coordinator, working alongside Richard Worthington to help implement and manage our busy schedule of training courses.

At first, I assumed this role would mainly involve booking candidates onto courses and sending confirmation emails. ut I quickly discovered it’s much more than that! With an average of 75 courses a year, it takes a highly organised and methodical approach. I’m constantly reviewing and updating our documents and processes to keep things running smoothly. This role demands a great deal of discipline, attention to detail, and clear communication – skills I genuinely enjoy using.

We currently offer eight different courses, ranging from the beginner-friendly Shotgun Skills Course to the more advanced, disciplinespecific evel oaching ourse – so there’s truly something for everyone.

I just wanted to take the time to email you and sincerely thank you for your help in getting me onto the ESP Referee Course. I know it was a pain to sort at short notice and it speaks volumes about you and the organisations want to support its members. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and I will be looking to complete all the other disciplines plus the Safety Officer elements... Once again a genuine thank you. You went above and beyond.

y working closely with our instructors and supporting the delivery of these courses, I’ve learned a great deal about the sport myself. That knowledge came in handy when I attended The Game Fair for the first time this year. I had some great conversations – from people asking about the instructor pathway to those who want to give back to the sport without shooting themselves. It was a pleasure to meet existing members and welcome new faces to the CPSA.

As Courses Coordinator, I support our team of tutors by ensuring they have everything they need – materials, information, and logistical support – to deliver courses effectively and, hopefully, enjoyably!

ere are a few questions my manager Richard Worthington asked me recently:

• Do I enjoy my job? Yes, I do! In fact, I love admin (strangely enough).

• Would I change anything about it? Not necessarily, but there’s always room for improvement – to make life easier for both our candidates, the tutors and myself.

• Is there anything I dislike about it? Hmm...

I’m still thinking about that one!

We’re currently pulling together dates and venues for our course calendar, so keep an eye on the CPSA website for updates. If you’d like to chat about any of the courses or find out more about what’s involved, feel free to contact me or visit: cpsa.co.uk/courses

All CPSA Courses are open to book online via cpsa. co.uk/courses

BRITISH OPEN ENGLISH SKEET

Hard work in training pays off for Alejandro Garcia-Mayol, as Richard Faulks reports.

Northampton Shooting Ground hosted the 2025 British Open English Skeet in August, with gusty winds on the Saturday and slightly less challenging conditions on the Sunday. The sun shone on both days though, and it was an enjoyable championship for the contestants at this friendly and well-run ground. The Saturday scores represented just how challenging the wind was, but Stuart Smith posted a 99ex100 which was impressive in those conditions and he led the field overnight.

Sunday was a hot day with a light breeze in the morning, but the wind did pick up after lunch. Stuart’s 99 was matched by Michael Russell and Alejandro GarciaMayol to ensure there would be a shoot-off for High Gun. Isabel

Russell (Michael Russell’s daughter) posted a 98ex100 which earned her the Ladies High Gun trophy. Junior Tristan Hockey matched Isabel’s score and took home the unior igh Gun and first in AA Class trophies. There were four shootoffs in total including the three-way for High Gun. The format was one full round followed by sudden death with four simultaneous pairs from peg four. Both Alejandro and Stuart straighted the full round but Michael dropped one target. Stuart was the first to shoot the sudden death pairs and let one target slip away from the high house on his second pair. Alejandro shot two pairs perfectly to secure the prestigious British Open 2025.

After the awards were handed out, Ale andro told me this was his first big

win and that this was: “A dream come true. As a skeet shooter, that’s what you aim for, that’s your dream. You know, you go out there every week, once a week to practice, once a weekend to shoot a competition, and that’s your aim really, one day you can do this.”

Thanks go to Eley Cartridges and SWATCOM for their sponsorship and support and to Northampton Shooting Ground for their hard work over the weekend. It was a great event and there was even a pitfire circling overhead both days from the local airfield. What a soundtrack.

EUROPEAN DTL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Held in Cazaubon, France on 14-17 August 2025. Report by David Amos, England Team Manager.

The European DTL Championships took place at Cazaubon in the very scenic area of the Armagnac district. The competition was 50 targets a day over four days, where normally its 200 targets over two days. They wanted to make a spectacle of the event with eight layouts and a maximum of 320 shooters booked in. They had to extent the days to comply with the start time (noise) and of course the stop for Lunch.

So we all set of from England by air, train, or ferry, then driving over land to Cazaubon, which on the map is about one and half hours South from Bordeaux. I must say I was worried if the

cartridges would be there, but sure enough they were waiting for us at the ground from Mary Arm. The team was captained by Joanne Fairclough, the recent winner of the Ladies individual English and British, and included in the Ladies team was Ellie Whitehead the Home International Captain and new cap Georgina Chamberlain.

The Senior team included the on fire Robert Diet (who produced back-toback 300’s at the HI and British), two new caps Sam Winterburn and Will Gent, along with Stuart Cureton and David Whitehead. The Super Vets, lead by Colin Heathcote, holder

conditions to shoot in, which had an effect on our scores.

Individually both Robert Dietz 7th and David Whitehead th finished in the top-ten which was an excellent achievement. Peter Relph received a medal in Sixth place in the Veterans as did Colin Heathcote Sixth in the Super Vets. All the teams finished in the ilver position behind the French, and it should also be mentioned the Irish Ladies won the Bronze, with team member Derville Glimartin winning the individual Silver. Some of the DTL rules were different in the sense that although we cleared the guns you were not allowed to dry mount when on the line.

Each time you shot a round of 25 targets you moved back a space on the next 25 targets. Pegs 1 and 3 had to stay behind and fill in score cards at either end of the layout, with an official FF T conducting the refereeing. Each layout – although regulated targets – were slightly different and times changed each day so it was fair.

I would like to thank the Captain and the team for giving its best and travelling a long way and giving in the end a week off work to compete in the DTL discipline we all love.

of the British High Gun, along with Clive Weston and George Turnes. The eteran team of eter Relph, Chris Bushell, and Jeremy Ayshford all had recently posted terrific scores leading up to this competition.

On the first day, the Captain of the competition gave a very encouraging speech to the team to perform to the best of their ability, without enduring any stress on themselves, which can come into play on team events. So, for the next four days all the shooters went out and delivered the best shooting they could under extremely hot conditions. Some afternoons it hit 3840C – very uncomfortable

The final words must go to the FFBT in France. They worked very hard to make this competition happen and it ran to perfection, with the organisation and the infrastructure, nothing was too much trouble and quick reply on enquiries, so we thank the president and the Directeur General Alexis Regent for their efforts and hard work. Congratulations to the French teams. There is a healthy following of DTL in France so may it continue.

After it was all done the Captain rewarded us all with a glass of Rothschilds Champagne latticed with Armagnac. Next stop New Zealand in March 2026 for the Worlds DTL in Christchurch.

ENGLISH OPEN & BRITISH OPEN DOUBLE RISE

The 2025 English and British Double Rise Championships were hosted at Bywell Shooting Ground over two fabulous days in August. Report by John Leightley, North Region Director.

The English Championship was held on Saturday, followed by the British Championship on Sunday. Both events were contested across two layouts, with competitors shooting 25 pairs on each. This year’s entries were impressive, with 93 shooters competing in the English Open Double Rise and 94 in the British Open. Competitors enjoyed excellent shooting conditions, with bright spells and very little wind – a welcome advantage that made a real difference to the targets.

ENGLISH OPEN DOUBLE RISE

The English Championship produced some outstanding scores. High Gun went to Edward Armett with a superb 88, an excellent achievement for the young shooter. Steven Janes took runner-up, while local shooter Mark Delf claimed third place, despite not competing in a Double Rise event since last year’s championships.

BRITISH OPEN ENGLISH SPORTING & SPORTRAP

Report and photos by James Marchington.

Phil Gray scored a massive success at the CPSA British Open English Sporting Championship at the end of August, winning the championship title for the first time and achieving the double, having won the English Open title earlier in the year. “I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the 2025 season,” he commented. “I have chased this title for years and finally the dream has come true. It makes it even sweeter to do the English and British double in the same year.”

Phil’s win was the culmination of a phenomenal week of competition at Eaton Hall near the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border, the shooting ground previously known as Doveridge. Since taking over the ground in January this year, the new owners, Syd and Amy Phillimore, together with Sam Hargreaves and the team, have achieved a remarkable transformation.

Already a much-loved ground with great facilities, this CPSA Premier Plus ground has gone to another level with the addition of a huge clubhouse and car park, tarmacked paths, new layouts and shooting shelters, and much more.

The improvements were the talk of the week, with shooters full of praise for the new owners’ efforts and attention to detail.

Together with the efficient organisation from the CPSA team, and generous sponsorship from Browning, Zoli, Eley Cartridges, Swatcom, Schöffel, Le Chameau, Teague Precision Chokes, Shots & Co, Fine Shooting Accessories and Laporte, the consensus was that the event deserved to be acknowldged as truly world class.

of 120 targets, the course set out across stands that take you down the famous Doveridge valley, around in front of the main house and finishing with a stand shooting out over the lake below the old clubhouse. This time shooters did not need to make the notorious climb up what had become fondly known as ‘Heart Attack Hill’; minibus transport was laid on from the clubhouse to Stand 1 at the top of the hill, from which the walking at least was all downhill.

...nearly 1,200 competitors are booked in, over five days of qualification...

With nearly 1,200 competitors booked in, there are five days of qualification, with the top four in each class, and top two in each category, invited back to shoot the finals at the end of the week. Shooting began on Bank Holiday Monday, the 25th of August, in ideal conditions of blue skies, warm sunshine and a light breeze. Nick Hendrick set a high bar early on, shooting a superb 110 ex-120 in the morning to top the leaderboard for the day.

The weather deteriorated after the first day, with sunshine and showers making conditions variable on day 2. Nevertheless, Martin Myers shot an impressive 107 ex-120 for the top score of the day, closely followed by Billy Baughan on 106. Billy had also taken the lead in the British Open Sportrap, running alongside the main Sporting event, with an exceptional score of 98 ex-100.

Day 3 saw more showers and sunny intervals. Despite the trickier weather, Brett Hand equalled ick endrick’s earlier score of 110 on his way to qualifying for aturday’s finals. y now the squad list for the finals was starting to fill up, with notable names including Martin Myers, Guy Franklin, George Digweed, Emma Stacey and Charlie Faulds.

With the weather remaining challenging, top score on day 4,

Thursday, was Joshua Keeble’s 105 ex-120, with Mark Bowes one behind on 104. Although some way short of the leaders’ score of 110, those were enough on the day to guarantee a place in aturday’s final. Also among those qualifying on Thursday were Phil and Amy Easeman, in Veterans and Ladies respectively, Adrian Balham in Super Vets, and Hannah Gibson in Ladies.

Friday was the last day of qualification, with a few of the big names making their bid for a place in aturday’s final. ark Winser and Tom oung both posted outstanding scores of 111 ex-120, to sit equal first at the top of the leaderboard. ark was full of praise for the course: “Honestly that was one of the most exciting courses I’ve shot in a long time and I really en oyed it. It starts difficult, it stays difficult until about stand ish, steadies a little bit and then ramps up again. It’s just a very good, wellrounded course,” he said, adding that he felt he was heading for 114 before dropping three targets on the final stand.

y now the squad list for the final was complete, so on Saturday morning we entered phase two of the competition: an entirely new 75-target course shot by competitors who had qualified during the week. Once again conditions were variable, with bright sunny intervals but cloud cover increasing through the day with the promise of rain on the way.

With those results, the make-up of the six-way super-final was decided with no need for a shootoff. A sizeable crowd of spectators gathered on the new stepped viewing area overlooking the Skeet layout below the new clubhouse. As we waited for the super-final to begin, light dri le turned to rain, but no-one seemed deterred with just a handful sheltering under golf umbrellas.

And what a super-final it was With a live scoreboard updated after each pair, spectators could follow the action and feel the suspense as the six top shooters battled it out for the prestigious title and coveted Daily Telegraph trophy. The superfinalists carry their finals score with them, so hil Gray went in with a two-target lead over his closest rival, James Attwood. Guy Franklin was just one target behind James, with the others not far behind. Those gaps could have evaporated in seconds, so the atmosphere was tense as one after another the super-finalists shot the three stands.

hil Gray dropped ust two targets on the first two stands, keeping his lead going on to the final stand – meaning he would be last to shoot. James

Attwood had missed four by the time hil stepped up, putting enormous pressure on hil to do the business. e kept his composure, dealing efficiently with the pairs, then calling for the impossiblelooking distant crossing single target off the tower, with full use of the gun. Without hesitation, it was hardly off the trap arm before he broke it first shot –a decisive finish to a superb display of shooting and a well earned British championship title.

hil was on cloud nine. lutching the huge silver trophy bearing the names of Britain’s legendary shooters across the years, he said: “Yesterday during qualifying I felt I didn’t shoot very well, but afterwards I went and found Syd and congratulated him on what in my eyes was the best British Open I’ve ever shot, and easily the best shoot of the year. Everything from the ground to the targets and how smoothly it’s run, you just can’t fault it. Syd, Amy and the team here have done a phenomenal job.”

This is the one that everyone wants to win in England...

The prizegiving ceremony, thankfully held inside the new clubhouse due to the weather, was also livestreamed on the ground’s Facebook page, adding to the sense of occasion.

BRITISH OPEN SPORTRAP

Held alongside the British Open Sporting was the British Open Sportrap Championship, run on the well-appointed Sportrap layouts below the new clubhouse and car park at Eaton Hall. Competitors were treated to a nice level walk on tarmac paths between the smart new covered layouts.

The competition began on Bank Holiday Monday, when Harry Seal and Argun Ismet took the early lead matching each other on 92 ex-100. Impressive scores, but their lead was not to last: on the Tuesday Billy Baughan swept in and not only made a strong 106 on the Sporting but also took the lead in portrap with a superb ex- . With this being a first past the post’ competition, that set a high bar for the rest of the shoot. ure enough, even ohn ee, this year’s English Open portrap champion, could not catch Billy, despite shooting the day 3 high gun score of 93. The following day the closest challenger was James Bradley-Day with a 92, still some way short of the lead.

illy’s held out to the very end, giving him a clear win ahead of late rivals Brett Winstanley on 96 and James Attwood 95. Emma Stacey won Ladies to go with her Sporting title, William Page took Juniors, Connor Davies Colts, George Digweed Veterans and Martin Doughty Super Vets. Disabled categories went to Paul Bailey and Mark Delf, in sitting and standing respectively. Congratulations to them and all class and category winners.

Ellie Seward shot her international personal best, 120ex125, to make the Trap Women finals in fifth.

Ellie and Nathan shot the Mixed Team event making the bronze medal match from 145ex150, just missing out on a medal, finishing one target behind France.

Ellie then went on to win an impressive silver in the Trap Solo Women.

Ellie: “It was tough to shoot over the three days, but I was really chuffed to make the final. Trio Trap en – the team led the field in the qualifying rounds, going on to beat roatia by four points in the semi-final to

progress to the gold medal match, beating Slovakia by two points to take gold, a cracking performance.

Trio Trap Men Junior – all three juniors each shot 45, one target ahead of Czechia, which was enough to put them forward for the gold medal match against Croatia, finishing a very creditable silver medal.

Solo Women Junior – Izzy MacKintosh took bronze against the more experienced Tereza Zaviskova (CZE) who has previously won ECH silver in 2023 and bronze in 2021.

Solo Men Junior – Tom Betts also took bronze with Tomas Nantl (CZE).

Trap Coach, Andrea Miotto: “We shot every day for eight days in a row, which was stressful for those who had not shot such a long competition, but the results confirmed the work we are doing is producing positive results shown by Matt’s medal, which confirmed he is one of the best shooters in the world. Also very happy with the work that Aaron Heading is doing and the whole team shot very well to win the Trio Trap Men.

Ellie’s olo final confirmed that she is capable of reaching a very high result in competition, I think no other shooter made three finals at the Europeans.

“It was good opportunity for me to see the junior team members, they have good prospects, just needing some time and experience to achieve a higher level in international competitions.”

Report by Team Manager Anita North.

Olympic Trap shooters from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland and Wales gathered at Griffin- loyd Shooting Ground near Knighton in Wales for the 48th OT Home International hosted by the WCTSA.

The England team for this year’s competition was under the Captaincy of Mark Shaw and this year’s team had a good number of new caps. It is not very often you get to have an Olympic medallist as a new cap in the team, but this year we did as att owardHolley joined the team for his first Olympic Trap ome International. In addition it was great to see siblings making the team as we had Elise and her brother Rhys Dixon on this year’s team.

By the end of Day 1 of the competition, att oward- olley and John Falconer (Scotland’s Captain) topped the leaderboard on . eah outhall was the top ady on , Tom Betts the junior lead on 70, Wales team regular Jonathan Davies was top Veteran on and hil Dando of Wales and Tim mith led uper eterans on . Day 2 was an early start for shooters, with an 8.30 am start to shooting to ensure time for competitors to be ready for the after shoot banquet. maintained excellent form to finish on 143 to be overall High Gun. England regular and last year’s captain Andy Greenwood and Ireland’s Wayne Byrne were just behind him on 142. However, Andy Greenwood could not stay for a shoot off – he had to return to work as he was in the middle of harvest – so runner up prize went to Wayne Byrne.

I have to highlight the performance of eah outhall who was in superb form and shot on Day to finish top lady and equal 4th overall on a very impressive 141.

So, it with scores all in, results printed out and checked, it was back to the accommodation and everyone prepared to gather for the official team photographs, speeches and the presentation of pri es at the official banquet.

England individuals and teams collected an impressive haul of badges and trophies across categories and came away as the Winning Overall Country. A full list of prize winners is below.

A big thank you needs to go to aura ewis from W T A for her work behind the scenes before and during the event, all the team managers Mike Bennett for Wales, Douglas Hendry for Scotland, Derek Burnett for Ireland and Clifford Barr for Northern Ireland. Many thanks go to ackie ewis and her team at Griffin- loyd hooting Ground. ackie ensured a smooth run competition at the ground. She did all of this while also holding her own competing as a member of the Welsh Team.

As a very proud England Team Manager I have to add my personal thanks to every member of the England Team. They all gave their best for the whole competition. Congratulations to all of the new caps in the team. I hope that you all en oyed your first and I most certainly hope the first of many) outings for England. Here’s looking forward to the ome International, which will be in Northern Ireland.

44th ENGLISH SKEET HOME INTERNATIONAL

Report by Team Manager Julia Havill.

The 44th English Skeet Home International took us to Route Gun Club in Northern Ireland.

The ground was looking great, weather was lovely with a light gentle breeze. Thursday practice day all nations taking part, catching up with old friends and the squadding announced in preparation for the competition to begin on Friday.

The targets were all set and squads were ready to play. Scores started coming in with a few 25’s on the scoreboard. By the end of day one the Seniors were looking strong – as were the Super Vets, Ladies, Juniors, and Vets.

Day two – it was all to play for with the last 50 targets. The weather again was favourable and at the end of play, the England team had swept the board in all categories to take the win!

We had six new caps this year, Darren Ollerenshaw, Michael Kite, Tristan

Hockey, Rebecca Hunt, Robert Tucker, and Dave Hendon.

Darren Ollerenshaw posted a superb 99 on his England debut.

Stuart Smith took top England honours with a great 149, in Ladies Isabel Russell shot 147, in Juniors Kian Maher 146, Veteran’s Paul Stokes 146, and Super Vet Robert Tucker 146.

Robert (Bob) had a great first ome International, taking the new cap trophy and Overall winning Super Vet.

Just for fun, after all the serious shooting had finished we had a managers round. This saw lots of frivolity, with Gavin Lees from Jersey taking the win with his first of the weekend.

One of the best Home Internationals, atmosphere on the ground was superb!

A shoot-off took place for England Runner-up, Leon Gill, Matt Morgan, Alex Garcia, and Isabel Russell all on 147. Matt took the win!

The only trophy we missed out on was Overall winning Vet, which Rob

All in all it was a great event and I couldn’t be more proud of my team. I’d like to congratulate Route Gun lub on a flawlessly run event. Route is a club run by its members – the time, care, and effort put into the ground was apparent. Fantastic targets and great reffing. One of the best Home Internationals, atmosphere on the ground was superb! I’m not sure how you could better it! 2026 takes us to Ireland, see you there!

Trow of Wales took on a brilliant 148. England took Overall winning team and I’m proud to say I took winning manager.

BREAKING CLAYS AND RECORDS

Paul Chaplow has recently broken some seemingly impossible records, as David Amos reports.

Arecord was broken recently which many people thought was impossible. Paul Chaplow, also known as Mr DTL, shot his 1,000th Registered 100-straight in DTL, at Holmes Chapel SG on 18 May 2025. In this amazing tally Paul has massed a perfect score of 100/300 a fantastic 187 times. That’s equal to going out and shooting 100-straight every weekend for nine and half years.

BRIGHT BEGINNINGS

It all began for Paul when he went rough shooting with a work colleague – he enjoyed it so much he shortly applied for his shotgun licence and joined the CPSA. He was a regular shooter on the Northern Sporting circuit, learning his trade from Malcolm Midgley of North Wolds Gun Club, and progressed quickly from a C Class to a AA Class shooter. At that time, he won many County and Regional Championships.

In aul qualified for the Gold Final of the Gamebore White Gold Cup at Weston Park.To aul’s delight he finished Overall Runner-up to rian Clegg, picking up a cheque for £4,000.

In the year 2000 Paul’s father passed away which hit him hard, so he engrossed himself in renovating his new house for the following 18 months. Then in late 2003, he went to his local club and shot a 96/100 in Skeet and 86/100 in a Sporting competition, which gave him a new lease of life.

He re-joined the CPSA that afternoon. With the help and sponsorship from Phil Thompson from the North of England Clay Target Centre, Paul started to

be a regular face again on the North of England shooting circuit.

It wasn’t long before Paul found his love of DTL shooting after being invited to join Rob Hall’s squad, consisting of Rob all, ohn ellamy, ohn Stafford, and Allan Henry, which made him feel he was running with the best.

Also during he shot his first and won his first England cap. In Alan Rhone offered aul a five year rieghoff sponsorship contract which sent him to Germany to be fitted with his new gun.

hortly after receiving his new ustom , aul went to San Antonio in Texas and posted a 99/100 in Double Rise and 100/100 at singles, winning AA lass in the Federal ingles hampionship.

ACHIEVEMENTS

It wasn’t long before the championships started to roll in. Over the following years aul’s outstanding Roll of Honour includes those mentioned in the infographic to the left. As well as this, Paul has also won: England new cap High Gun at Home international, Winning Captain at DTL Home International, Several winning 1- & 2-day Squad member at DT ome Internationals, everal English ritish ingle arrel hampionships, Australian ingle arrel hampionship,

England team member in Home International, European and World Teams, Member of the highest squad score in the UK – 1498/1500.

The one title that eluded Paul was the British Open DTL Championship. He eventually won this at Banbridge (NI) and dedicated the win to young Billy Logan (Junior), one of the England team members who lost his life days earlier to cancer.

Paul was also Overall Runner-up at the World DTL Championship at Mid Wales Shooting Centre and has been in the England winning Senior team at the World DTL Championships on three occasions. England Seniors have only won this title 3 times.

FURTHER AFIELD

aul is also a regular shooter on the Trap fields in the USA. On one occasion Paul won the main shoot on the calendar at the Spring Grand Trap shoot.

Paul shot a 98 in Handicap followed by a 25-straight from the back fence at 27 yards. This had not been won by an overseas shooter for 48 years.

Paul has also appeared on the very popular USA Trap Talk hosted by Ricky Marshall and Zack Nannini. Check out his interview.

ACCREDITATIONS

In 2015 Paul was named CPSA Clay Shooter of the Year and

in 2018, awarded the CPSA Special Contribution Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to the Sport.

Then out of the blue and the icing on the cake – Paul was awarded the BEM British Empire Medal in the Queens Honours list for his contribution to shooting.

Paul’s simple advice to shooters is to get the fundamentals right and get the gun to shoot where you look before you start trecking around the country. Go out to lots of grounds to get experience and don’t be afraid to ask and watch the top shooters of the day. DTL is the best stepping stone to go on to other blue-ribbon events, such as Olympic trap.

When looking back, Paul remembers the people that influenced him the most were eith ond, ohn Campbell, and John Bellamy.

SPONSORS

Paul takes great pride to be associated with his sponsors: Krieghoff/Alan Rhone, Hull Cartridge Company, Wenig Custom Stocks, and Fauxdegla International Clay Shooting Centre.

Paul started off his sponsorship with Hull Cartridge Company back in 2009, progressing to an Ambassador’s role in 2017.

He often comments that his achievements wouldn’t have been possible without their help and support.

Nigel Bottom, Witham Group’s MD and shooting enthusiast explained “Good gun care is vital to keep any shotgun or firearm performing accurately, safely, and with reliable precision. Regular cleaning and lubricating will also offer effective protection from the major issue of rust and impurities. Using the correct and specifically designed products are crucial, as general lubricators and cleaners can be incredibly harmful to the delicate mechanisms of the gun and its wooden or plastic parts.”

The gun products are part of Witham Group’s recently launched ‘Witham Estate Range’ – a specially curated selection of their best quality lubricants and paints, ideal for country estates, and offer the latest in agricultural oils and

With a potent water-resistant rust inhibitor this oil is specifically developed to protect internal and external metal parts from rust and corrosion plus fishing reels and other precision mechanisms. The product will not harden or become rancid giving extra-long service. Witham Gun Oil flows freely, from a fine mist aerosol.

Steve Wilkinson from Wilkinson Brothers Ltd, a Lincolnshire Farmer and Game and Clay shoot enthusiast who has tried and assessed the new range said: “I am impressed with the quality of these new products. Witham Gun Oil is easy to use and flows well from the can. It does not leave a sticky residue and keeps parts lubricated for a long time. It’s a really nice gun oil that I’ll continue to use to protect my guns.”

WITHAM GUN BARREL & CHOKE CLEANER

Witham Gun Barrel & Choke Cleaner has been designed to deliver unparalleled cleaning ability. An ultra-effective, blend of selected purging solvents which are highly effective for removing gun powder, lead, other metals, and plastic wad from cartridge residues. The cleaner removes such items from exposed and internal metal surfaces and displaces non-visible moisture from metal pores. This Gun Barrel & Choke cleaner is also specifically designed to dry slower to ensure it removes even the most stubborn deposits.

John Lee, AAA registered, Pro Shot and Beretta World Champion who also runs a well renowned shooting school, has used the gun cleaner and commented: “Witham’s gun cleaner removed a surprising amount of grime from my gun and the aerosol was easy to use and managed to get to the hard-to-reach parts.”

This award-winning gun oil is made with lanolin oil, derived from sheep’s wool and is a powerful natural lubricator, water repellent and corrosion protector. Forming a longlasting barrier, this oil has outstanding rust protection and wood preserving qualities, and yet is completely biodegradable and environmentally sensitive, so suitable for forestry, water ways, agricultural areas. It is a non -carcinogenic alternative to existing oils and can be used for many other applications found within the workshop and home. It offers a popular non-toxic, biodegradable high performing alternative to the existing gun oil market.

“I used Witham’s Prolan gun oil to protect my gun before a shoot and was impressed by its staying power and how long the water proofing lasted –even in the pouring rain. The lanolin is an outstanding natural protector which is equally as good as regular gun oil – but better for the environment.”

A LABOUR OF LOVE

What happens when a shooting man’s Christmas present idea becomes a successful business?

The answer is Shots & Company.

The award-winning Shots & Company offer full-sized, luxury shotgun-cartridgeshaped bottles of sloe gin, single malt whisky and salted caramel vodka which are visually stunning and have global appeal.

Doug Day, founder and managing director, came up with the idea of a fullsized shotgun cartridge bottle of sloe gin when his adult children kept asking him what he might like for a Christmas present. Having received any number of shooting ties and socks over the years, Doug had begun to hope that Father Christmas would provide a 70 centilitre shotgun-cartridgeshaped bottle of his favourite shooting tipple, sloe gin. An extensive search of the internet revealed that Santa was most unlikely to provide his desired present, because it just didn’t seem to exist. So, Doug decided to make

one himself.

But it wasn’t that simple and there was a steep learning curve concerning glass design and production; and the most challenging task of producing a lovely, metallicised, heavy-weighted top, including a firing cap, to precise shotgun cartridge scale. Doug said: “It took six years of design, and differing manufacturing methods to deliver our vision of authenticity, and fun. Even the crimping on the bottom of the bottle had to be perfect.”

The brand name resulted from Doug being accorded the honour of an Air Force call sign by a fighter pilot, namely ‘Shots’, for his affection for driven game shooting and tequila shots, but obviously not at the same time.

To see the latest lead-free offerings, visit shotsand company.com

The result is that the glass bottle is made from a luxury white flint by a company in Yorkshire, and the beautiful top is designed by an American company. Doug added: “Perhaps this is proof the ‘special relationship’ between the USA and UK can work in practice.”

Doug’s wife, Penny, said the company couldn’t be named just Shots, and enquired what it was that we all love so much about shooting?

Doug replied: “Ask anyone who shoots what they love most about shooting. It’s the company.”

So, a brand and company was born and formally launched in the UK four years ago.

Today it’s an established brand with a growing presence in the market and the bottles are filled with luxurious sloe gin, 12-yearold single malt whisky and salted caramel vodka liqueur.

The entire package reflects Doug’s passion for shooting, the people involved, shared values, and fun in the best of company. As he said: “Truly, a labour of love.”

CPSA INVOLVEMENT

This summer, Shots & Company sponsored both the World English Sporting Championships and the British Open Sporting and Doug said: “We are proud to be CPSA sponsors and it’s a partnership which has worked very well. We sponsored the Yanks v Brits competition at the CPSA World Sporting Championships. The Americans won this year and loved their prizes. We also sponsored High Guns at the British Open Sporting. The winners were delighted with their bottles of sloe gin and salted caramel vodka.

But this is a growing business and there are more plans for the future: “Our plans for the next 12 months are to continue to support our wonderful friendship with the CPSA, their members, and prestigious shooting club venues. We hope also to support the various military teams (USAFE, RAF, British Army, Royal Marines, and Royal Navy). Also, we are looking to provide more support for ladies shooting, and to actively encouraging young and novice shots to participate in our wonderful sport.”

It’s been a busy month for shooters all over the country, and Cheshire shooters especially haven’t been resting on their laurels! Our shooters have been competing all over the world, with Miles Machin, Scott and John Barnett at the ICTSF English Sporting Championships in Canada bringing home medals, DTL shooters at the European Championships in France, and others across the UK.

The Cheshire ESP Championship and Final Selection Shoot took place at Catton Hall on 25th August. Thanks go to James and John Mann for putting on an excellent course with some challenging stands around the ground, befitting the heshire Championship.

Sam Ward (last year’s reigning champion) continued his superb form this year and put in an impressive early score of 96, which remained unbeaten for the rest of the day.

Highest scores in classes and categories as follows: AAA & Men’s: Sam Ward (and High Gun) 96, AA & Vets: Guy Robinson 90, A: Lee Williams 87, B: Ian Cunliffe 82, C: Paul Carson 73, Ladies: Hazel Denney, Juniors: Neil Foxley, Colts: N/A

Leaving you with a choice of one or potentially two championships if your wallet and organisation skills allowed.

The Lincolnshire Sporting Championship as always is our main event of the year, attracting 71 Lincolnshire shooters who made up 50% of the entries for this event. The weather was fine, and when you combine this with the excellent course set by John Lee it was all set for a very enjoyable days shooting.

For the last few years Kallum Burrell has appeared on several of our sporting trophies. In 2023 he won this event outright whilst still a junior. No longer, he has once again taken this title with a superb score of 91. Just one shot back was Paul Tunnard who picked up the Veteran title and A class. Also on the same score was Trevor Hawkins, taking the AA class award.

A very solid 86 from Stewart Chester took B class and C class went to Trevor Dodge on 73.

The junior title went to Henry Sardeson

We are now heading towards the end of the 2025 competition season, with fantastic results still being achieved across the disciplines, at home and abroad.

9-10 Aug: East Midlands I/C FITASC Championship – Kegworth SG Congratulations to the Norfolk FITASC Team. The Veteran Team of ean rutchfield, aul Owen and Wayne Parker won their category, and the Senior Team of Dean Cann, Danny Duffield, Tony ohnson, Daniel Laddiman, Darren Neale and Simon Peacock were third. In the race for the Directors Trophy, Norfolk were awarded another 8 points, continuing our unbeaten run for 2025. Thank you to all the team members for another fantastic achievement.

with a very creditable 82. Ella Bennett has been showing improving form over the last few years, never very far from the top of the ladies leaderboard so it’s good to see her pick up her first incolnshire title on . We are also pleased to welcome another young lady who has picked up her first Lincolnshire award as Charlotte Branton took the special award “Paul Wilkinson Champion of Champions” award for Colts on a score of 61.

Congratulations to all our winners. Thank you, as always to John Lee for setting a very enjoyable round and to Becky, Simon and all the referees for making this an exceptional day’s shooting.

Single Barrell Priory CTC

There was a touch of déjà vu about the results of this year’s single barrel championship. The venue was different but the end result was exactly the same as Nick Day took the title and trophy for the second year running, once again on a score of 92. Once again a shoot off was required with ohn ansfield matching top score. As far as shoot offs are concerned, Nick has been there, done that and got the T shirt so finished the ob with a straight as he did last year) to John’s 19.

3 ladies chased the ladies title. An in form Lizzie MacGreggor White shot out of her skin to finish on a score of , ust target off the overall winner.

24 Aug: Norfolk S/B Championship – The Priory CTC

There may have only been 7 Norfolk shooters competing, but competition was fierce for the ounty hampion title. With four scores in the 90s, just one point separated the winner from the runner-up. Congratulations to John Reynolds, who took both the Overall and Veteran titles with an excellent score of 95. Simon Owen was runner-up. Well done also to Jamie Goddard who won the Junior H.G. title with a score of 68. The Ladies’ title was not contested.

4-6 Sep: ABT HCIT & BO Championships – Omagh CTC, N. Ireland

Many congratulations to William Gilbert and Rhys Dixon who had the honour of representing England at the ABT Home Countries International Tournament. Despite the wet and windy weather which made conditions very challenging at times, William finished day in oint second place with a score of 98. He scored 99 on day to finish on . Thanks to Natasha and all at The Priory for well presented targets and a well run competition.

It takes a very determined and talented man to wrest the skeet doubles trophy from our very own "Mr Skeet", Doug Moore. Doug has taken this title for the last 7 years but this year Martin Grimwood can claim that honour with a superb score of 92. Martin gave Doug a run for his money last year but this year had the satisfaction of putting Doug into second place with Martin the overall winner and top veteran.

Jacqui Baker, for the second year running, was top lady on 60 beating Nicola Mason by just 1 target.

Congratulations to all and thanks to Natasha and the team at Priory for a well run event.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE

Gosh the summer seems to have stopped abruptly. One minute it’s warm enough for anyone and the next the temperature’s dropped by 10 degrees and we’re into autumn with leaves in drifts and conkers and acorns falling to the ground like hail stones. I’m hoping that we can get an Indian Summer some time in October to ward off the speed at which the year wants to get us into winter.

There’s plenty to report this month but I’ll start by saying that it will not include the previously advertised county Skeet Doubles competition. This was due to be shot over

the same weekend as the Double Rise but by ‘popular’ request it was postponed and is now timetabled for 11-12 October.

3 Aug: English Sporting

These fortnightly registered shoots attract plenty of shooters and with the county competition there was no exception. Of the 135 entry, 46 were county shooters. Thank you all for turning up. The Senior title was taken by Dave Morgan with a creditable 94. The Veteran title was won by Rene Rivoire with 88 who was two clays ahead of Mick Russell. Ruth Markham seemed to enjoy the course and entered score of 72 to take the title. Ruth last won this in 2014! Junior Ali Briglin put in a lovely 74 whilst Fox Wimpress shot his first county competition and took the Colt title, lovely.

8 points towards the Directors Trophy competition, so congratulations to all the team members.

Directors Trophy Competition

Norfolk has now gained top marks in all the four of the Inter-Counties Championships of DTL, ESK, FITASC and All Round. This is the first time that this has been achieved in the 15-year history of the Directors Trophy Competition. At the time of writing, we are 5 points clear of our nearest rivals Suffolk, with just the ESP and ABT I/C Championships left to shoot. A clean sweep would be an amazing achievement, and not beyond the realms of possibility. A massive thank you to everyone who has already competed for Norfolk this season, and the best of luck to the Sporting and ABT team members.

12 Oct: Norfolk County Championship

Norfolk Double Rise Championship

– The Priory CTC

The event also hosted a prize draw as part of the ‘If You’re In You May Win’ series and Seb Laundon took the 250 cartridges home.

23–24

Aug: Double Rise

This was on a pretty good August Bank Holiday weekend and so the entry of 10 was understandable. Chris Lack won the Senior title with 74x100, two clays clear ahead of Jason Potts.

Veteran Stuart Lobley won his category for the 2nd year running with a score of 73 and Junior Ali Briglin took the Junior Title.

30–31 Aug: DTL

There was a poor turnout for this competition compared to previous years. The county isn’t strong in the trap disciplines but we have previously seen entries of nearly 20 in this competition. This year it was down to 11. Thank you to all who took part. The Senior title was won by Jason Potts with 93x100, 2 clear of Chris Boreman. Taff Willliams would have been onto a hat trick if he’d taken the Veteran title but Bob Meadows put paid to that with a score of 83. Ali Briglin won the Junior category with a wonderful 91. This represents his 6th win of the season. Fox Wimpress again took to the field and won the Colt trophy. Thank you to all who entered.

9–10 Aug: Inter Counties FITASC Kegworth

Keith Smith got together a wonderful team for this event. The Senior and Veteran categories were full, indeed the Vets were only 2 clays away from winning their category which contributed to us coming 3rd overall in the event and picking up 6 points to add to our total. Thank you to all who took part.

Everyone who shoots for the county will receive 25 cartridges for each competition entered and their names will go forward into a prize draw for a £50 thank you.

22 Oct: Annual Awards Evening

Now in its third year and continuing to be very popular. Is at the Overstone Manor Hotel in Sywell on 22nd October starting at 7pm. Tickets, to include a roast meat bap, are available from Marty at £18. Its a lovely opportunity to celebrate the successes of your friends and chat about the season.

Congratulations to Dan Bishop whose consistent excellent shooting has resulted in his second cap, being selected to shoot for England in September at the Home International. Really well deserved.

At the Semi Auto Sportrap at OLSS it looks like a great time was had by all (well maybe except for the people who had to pick up the shells!). Congratulations to Sean Gamblen on his High Gun with 145, Neil Lockton on 142, Des Sturgess on 139 and Trevor Bell on 138.

More congratulations in order for Dan Bishop – the winner of the 2025 Pro One! Dan shot a brilliant 115 ex 120 on a course where you had to have your wits about you all the way round. We also had Richard Faulds in the Super Six Final whose 113 had led all week. Big congratulations to both of you for making the final in a massive field of shooters and well done Dan for coming out on top on what appears on paper to have been a very tight shoot off. We also had Charlie Faulds take 3rd in Juniors with 105 and Josh MacDonald 7th in B with 100. Other great scores from Martin Reynolds 108, Des Sturgess 107 and Phil Marks with 100. Berkshire Super sporting held at the wonderful Barbury Shooting School. Another warm day with some great targets presented by Huw, Josh and their super team. Very closely contested with a special shoot off being arranged by the ground to decide our champion. Paul Gillet and Chris Childerhouse both scored 93 with Chris coming out on top to be 2025 champion. Thomas Croucher won the colts and ladies Ceyla Ismet and Nicola Gryspeerdt both shot 80 and as both had left the ground the champion will be decided on count back. At the time of writing we are trying to arrange a county compak championship. Details to follow.

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

HELEN SMITH helen_smith@instron.com sites.cpsa.co.uk/buckinghamshire

Well folks we have another Bucks champion, this time congratulations to Billy Baughan on becoming the British Open Sportrap Champion. Billy shot the unbeatable 98 on day 2 of the competition and set the bar for the other competitors. With some big names still to shoot he held off Brett and James who shot 96 and 95 respectively on the last day to take the championship, fabulous shooting Billy.

Well done to all of the Bucks shooters that shot the British Open Sporting and Sportrap at Eaton Hall, 7 of you managed to qualify for the bird final on the Saturday, our best placed shooter was Phil Easeman who was joint 3rd in Veteran’s but missed out on the podium in the shoot off, great shooting Phil. smonahan@btopenworld.com sites.cpsa.co.uk/hertfordshire

22-25 Aug: British Open Sporting & Sportrap - Eaton Hall

Nineteen shooters from Hertfordshire took part in the British Open Sporting but on this occasion sadly none made it through to finals day. However, it was promising to see so many make the trip with all classes and categories represented from AAA to C and Juniors through to Super Veterans. Hertfordshire did have some success in the Sportrap with Paul Lovick taking the Bronze medal in Veterans with a great score of 87ex100.

24 August: South East Region ABT Championship - Nuthampstead

The South East Region held the ABT Championship at Nuthampstead, home ground for many Hertfordshire shooters. Lucas Hyde scored an excellent 96ex100 which led to a shoot-off for the title. With a 25 straight Lucas emerged as the South East Region Champion. Andrew Dearman also put in a strong performance to place 1st in B Class with 95ex100 which also placed him joint 3rd overall.

Around the Grounds

KENT

Another fantastic couple of months for our kent shooters,

Southdown Gun Club held the south east of England sportrap in the middle of the month where kents top lady shooter Ellie Jones secured her way to be crowned south east of England sportrap lady champion, well done ellie that’s fantastic.

Nuthampstead held the Olympic trap grand prix, where we see young Finley Bowles secure a bronze medal in juniurs and Senol Tas secured a silver medal, that’s great guys!

DTL we see team England head up to Scotland for the home international where young George Madden was part of the junior team and they secured a gold medal which is fantastic in such horrible weather conditions and team captain Nicky Waghorne secured a win with the senior team to be crowned over all winners.

Good luck to all our shooters participating in this months competitions we cant wait to share the news of your winnings.

Our skeet championship was held at Dartford Clay Shooting Club on 27 July on a breezy day we see two of kents top skeet shooters battle it out for the over all champion title as they both shot 99 on there original rounds, after a great shoot off between Mark Chesson and Tristan Hockey, Mark dropped a target and leaving Tristan the overall champion and junior champion leaving Mark to take over all senior title, our lady champion was Emma Webb with Russell Swain taking the veteran title well done guys that’s a great day all round.

Keeping on with the skeet our kent shooters headed up to Northampton for the British open skeet championship, Tristan Hockey shot a 98 on day one aswell as Mike Kite, the scores kept rolling in with

on top form both scoring an amazing 91ex100 to place joint 3rd Overall. Chris also came joint 1st in A Class and Nigel was the highest scoring Veteran at the event. Neil Hogg shot brilliantly too scoring 83ex100 to take 1st in C Class.

Maddie Purser was in action at uthampstead’s OTR fixture on August and placed joint 3rd Overall with a fantastic score of 89ex100.

SURREY

10 Au: Surrey English Skeet – NCSC

This fixture was moved from earlier in the season to avoid clashes with other Championships and unfortunately there was a very small turnout of Surrey shooters. NCSC regular Dan Crowley took the title, beating previous winner Frank Arico into second place, but Frank still took the Veterans Trophy.

only a few 99’s, the guys headed back up to the ground on the final day to have a shoot off for AA class, after a five way shoot off Tristan was crowned AA class winner and he also took the junior high gun, that’s outstanding Tristan and a great way to head in to the home internationals in Ireland!

On the same weekend as the British open skeet Barbury help the famous pro one challenge where we see our super star James Attwood take over all runner up and 2nd place in AAA for the David's Challenge, and on day 5 of the David's Challenge we see Joe Ling place 3rd in AA class and Ellie Jones 1st in B class, that’s amazing guys and girls keep up the great shooting.

Kents double rise championship was held at Maylands Gun Club on august 10th where see see up and coming George Madden take over all champion title as well as the junior title well done George, we also see DTL England team manager take the runner up and veteran title and Thomas Howe won the clubman b class. We done guys.

Helice wow what some scores we’ve had from these guys and girls who have made the GB Team for the World ZZ Championships In Ghedi. Ladies: Dionne Rogers – Faye Wills. Men: Charles Pomfret – Tom Gridley. Masters: Chris Potter –Howard Batt .

Top Surrey Lady was Sarah White on 73.

6-7 Sep: Helice World Championship – Italy

We had 4 shooters from Surrey participating in the Helice ZZ World Championship in Italy during September – Riccardo Verrilli, Steve Cole, Jo and Fergus Watson-Hopkinson. Riccardo won his first G ap and oined o in the GB Team. All shot well with Steve Cole winning a 3rd place Beretta Cup for consistent shooting over the European and World Championships. Jo Watson-Hopkinson, alongside Dionne Rogers and Faye Wills took the Ladies title and gold medal on in the team event.

Surrey Supreme Championship

There is no change at the top of the Supreme table as neither Riccardo or Jo were available to shoot in the English Skeet event – not surprisingly they were both shooting Helice on that day!

Andy Smith is in third with 47 points, Billy Greenwood is fourth on 43 with Brian Gardiner and Chip Smith tied on 42 for the Veteran’s title.

Isobel Greenhill has extended her lead in the Juniors with good points from the ABT.

SUSSEX

SIMON ARBUCKLE siarbuckle@sky.com sussexcpsa.com

The competition season is slowly coming to an end with only a few more championships to go before some of you swap clays for game. What is pleasing to see as you read on is the names of new shooters winning titles in county competitions. We really need more ladies, juniors and colts taking part and remember you gain points towards the Supreme Champion competition.

OXFORDSHIRE

STEPHANIE BLUNDELL

sites.cpsa.co.uk/oxfordshire

The sunny days are getting fewer, and we've even had some rain, shame its a little too late for the harvest. The busy clay season is winding down now, and what a season it has been for shooters across the country and county. We're spoilt with some fantastic grounds and course setters.

Most recently we had the British Open English sporting at Eaton Hall. I think we can all appreciate the transformation, make over, face lift- whatever you want to call it, it is epic. They really haven't left any stone unturned, they've thought of everything. From the moment we arrived we were impressed with the ground. The course and targets were outstanding. The standard of shooting was tested, I loved watching the scores over the week so it was fab to be able to watch a live stress of the superfinal. ongratulations to all of the shooters, we witnessed some incredible shooting. We had some excellent scores from Bob Blundell, Mickey Rouse and Cheryl Hall to name a few. any congratulations to o field for finishing nd in ladies and rd in class. heryl also finished rd in ladies. Very well done to Joe Robbins, you are the Oxfordshire Olympic trap champion. Well shot.

Ken Smith takes the Oxfordshire English Skeet title on countback and Cheryl Hall took the ladies title. Great shooting.

Shoutout to Bob Blundell for being selected for the Home Internationals

County ESP Championship

Held at Southdown on bank holiday Monday saw 64 Sussex shooters competing for the title of county sporting champion. The course took them off the normal ane into the bottom field so targets and presentations were all new to everyone. The weather was warm but breezy but not so much to affect the targets too much. With an amazing score of 98/100 Guy Franklin retained his title narrowly chased by Pete Goldsmith with 97/100. The other title winners were Ladies: Hannah Gibson, Veteran: George Digweed, Junior: Jack Williams-Pitman, Colt: Rupert Hartland.

this month. Ace Job. Good luck and shoot well.

Julian freeman has been cleaning up with high gun at the Oxfordshire and joint high gun at Hangman's stone. Ricky Davis also topped A class at Hangman's stone.

Father and son, Tony and Joe Robbins have made the ABT team for the home internationals, fantastic news and the best of luck.

FITASC shoot at Roundwood saw Karl Field take high gun, Chris broomfield oint st in class, o field was st in class and nd in ladies and Billy Walker was 3rd in class & supervets. Super shooting.

Special mention to Mike Bartlett and Cheryl Hall who were joint high guns at Hornet, did you miss the same clays? Was their extra pressure? Can you repeat it? Well done both!

We look forward to seeing lots of Oxfordshire shooters at our fundraising shoot at the Oxfordshire shooting ground on eptember.

Bird sporting.

Stay safe, shoot straight and look after your refs!

It's good to see new names taking titles especially in the junior and colt categories. Well done all.

Compak

The county compak championship was held concurrently with the sporting and saw 33 Sussex shooters taking part. For most this is their annual attempt at compak as opposed to the regular sportrap held at Southdown. Guy Franklin, 93/100, completed the double and lifted the trophy again so a very profitable day for him with his wife Sarah taking the Ladies title. Veteran: Tim Fenner, Super Veteran: Kev Lillywhite, Junior: Jack Williams-Pitman.

John Fenner Memorial Trophy

This trophy in memory of a long standing Southdown referee is shot for annually on the same day as the county championship and can be won by anyone not just Sussex shooters. As it was it stayed in Sussex with Guy Franklin winning. Three trophies in a day, can’t be bad.

25-29 Aug:British Open Sporting

Held at the massively refurbished and renamed Eaton Hall saw 22 Sussex shooters make the long journey north to compette. After the 120 target course had been shot George Digweed, Guy Franklin, Hannah Gibson, Chris Peacock and Paul Edwards all qualified for the finals day. This was held on the Saturday over a new 75 target course, Guy Franklin qualified for the man super final and finished in third place only one point behind James Attwood. ongratulations to all finalists, especially Guy.

British Open Sportrap

Held at the same time as the BO ESP saw Charlotte Kerwood take second place in the ladies category.

FITASC

The county championship was held on Sunday 7 September at Southdown. It was a bright but blustery day with the four layouts being held in some locations rarely used to keep it fresh for everyone. At the end of the day the champion had to settled by a shoot off between the currently very on form Guy Franklin and the shooter who always seems to be nipping at his heels - ete Goldsmith. hot over a tough layout testing both shooters saw Guy come out on top. Keeping it in the family Sarah Franklin won Ladies, Veteran: Russell Allen, Super Veteran: Kenny Bennett. It was good to see some new faces taking part, hopefully they will continue to shoot this testing but exciting discipline.

Have a Go day

This has been rescheduled so please keep an eye out on the website a social media posts for the new date.

August was a busy month for the DSG starting off with the British Open English Skeet, In the Disabled Standing category, James Center was High Gun with 92, followed by Chris Budd 83 and Christopher Borman 78. Disabled Sitting category High Gun was Ben Woodham on 97 and Adrain Last on 80.

The DSG had our 3rd visit to Quidenham Simulated Game Shoot, What a Fantastic Day! Cracking shooting, everything went to plan even the weather. Thanks to Jessica, Philip, Seth and all the team involved in setting up the day to make it fully accessible for us all. Hospitality was as ever top tier and we all left suitably stuffed!

Following on from our inaugural visit to Park Farm Shooting Ground in 2024 the DSG received an invitation from Phil Sanders at Park Farm to return in 2025.

Phil is both a serious competitor and a strong supporter of clay shooting which shows having developed Park Farm into a first-class facility which is very user friendly to both able bodied and disabled shooters. With a very accessible club house and toilet facilities with flat access paths to all layouts.

The day started with a group of 11 members and friends mustered with four disciplines available to shoot - English porting – keet - Down the ine DT

Olympic Trap OT With OT being a discipline some had not shot before

this drew a number to give it a try and of course got the bug coming back for more & more! A Buffet lunch and back out ready for a further afternoon session.

Finally, a big thanks to Phil at Park Farm for hosting us again and putting on a great choice of targets and very sociable day. Thanks also to Paul Rendell and Alec Sperling for initiating, planning and running the event.

The British Open Sporting event took place at Eaton Hall. In the Disabled Standing category, Mark Delf secured the top spot with a score of 59, followed by Damian King with a score of 47 and aul riggs, who finished with a score of 39. Meanwhile, the Disabled Sitting category concluded after a thrilling shoot-off where both scored . Daniel Parker emerged victorious after the sudden death shoot-off with aul ailey taking second place.

The British Open Sportrap event was held concurrently with the Sporting Championship at Eaton Hall. In this competition, Mark Delf achieved the title of High Gun, while in the Disabled Sitting category, Paul Bailey also secured the High Gun award. Daniel Parker performed commendably as well, finishing as the runner-up.

SHOOT WITH MORE COMFORT, ACCURACY AND ENDURANCE

Some shooters are sensitive to the punishing effects of recoil, so we’ve created a multi-fit hydraulic recoil pad for wood stocks that utilizes dampening technology borrowed from the aerospace industry that dramatically reduces recoil: 80% Less Recoil Energy, 35% Less Muzzle Lift, 25% Less Peak Force, 35% Less Rock Back to give youth shooters greater accuracy, less flinching and a better shooting experience. No measuring, no grinding, no hassle.

Fits Stocks: 4-1/2” – 4-3/4”

FalconStrike mounts quickly and easily to your small shotgun or hunting rifle wooden or synthetic buttstock with only two screws.

JOHN LEE

QWhat age did you start shooting? How did you start off?

I started shooting when I was about 10 or 11, just with an air rifle at first, shooting targets in the garden. I then progressed onto a shotgun about a year or so later. I didn’t shoot clay competitions until I was about 20 years old, it was just pigeons and vermin, with an occasional game day.

QWhat do you enjoy most about the sport?

I love competing, I am very competitive but over the last few years I have done little competition shooting and have fell short because of this. This year I have made a point of doing a bit more and I think it’s done the trick!

QFavourite discipline and competition?

My favorite discipline is Sporting, I also like Sportrap and FITASC – only if you can shoot it straight through – I don’t like it when it takes all day!

Q

Can you tell us about your success at the recent WESP event?

great scores together so I am very excited to see how he progresses over the next few years. Secondly would be my good friend Irwin, he is the reason I’ve done more shooting this year as he books all the shoots and hotels, and drives me everywhere aswell – without him I wouldn’t have done half as much. And thirdly I think would be my youngest son George, he’s only just starting out and I think he will do just fine, he ust needs to realise he’s not going to be as good as his brother just yet! It takes time – he’s very impatient like me.

Q

podium and be number one in the UK is a great achievement.

I finished Third in the world this year which I am very happy with. I have shot more this year but nothing like the amount some of the others do, so to finish on the

...You are as good as anyone, don’t ever doubt yourself or your ability.

QWhat is your most memorable achievement?

I’ve had a few good results over the years but I think finishing Third this year at the World Championships has got to be my most memorable achievement to date. Also winning High Gun at the EO Sportrap in May was brilliant!

Q

If you could choose three people to shoot with, past or present, who would they be and why?

This is fairly straight forward for me, my first choice is my eldest son Josh. He’s really enjoying his shooting now and starting to put some

If you could time travel, what advice would you give to your younger self starting out in the sport?

I would tell myself that you are as good as anyone, don’t ever doubt yourself or your ability. Over the years I believe I’ve lost several titles just down to the fact I didn’t think I was good enough.

QDo you have any current sponsors?

I am very lucky to have had some brilliant sponsors over the years, who have enabled me to get to the level I’m at today. I owe huge thanks to Tom Bailey of Bailey Trailers, who saw potential in me many years ago and without any doubt has played a big part in my success over the years. I currently am sponsored by Eley Hawk, Beretta/GMK, Teague Chokes, RE Ranger, East of England Shooting Ground, Clarke Group Construction, Clayco, and Elite Fish and Chip Company.

QWhat is coming up for you in the next 12 months?

Obviously we are now coming to the end of the clay season and I’ve got a very busy coaching schedule out in the field, so my main focus is on that right now. But over the winter I will shoot some steady practice working towards hopefully another successful season in 2026.
