Since his introduction as the skeet coach, Matt has been nudging Derek toward rhythm and mindset as much as techni ue. t first it was theory. Now, it’s starting to take shape.
IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW!
ut that s the point he s finding it more often, and holding it for longer each session.
“It’s true, I can hear it, I can feel it,” Derek said. “The rhythm Matt’s been looking for – it’s there now.”
…”And then it isn’t” Derek laughs, knowing it doesn’t always stay.
The change hasn’t been sudden. Hours of drills have provided the base, but the real difference lies in the way the two of them now work together. Derek has embraced not only the practice but also the psychology that comes with it – clearing distractions, keeping calm, and narrowing the focus to a single bird at a time. There’s an ease about the pair. Matt’s methods can look unorthodox, but Derek has come to trust them, and the results are beginning to show. onfidence is building one round at a time.
Those watching may sense it without quite knowing why. But, if you don’t, it might be worth stopping by for a chat with them both.

ENGLISH OPEN SKEET DOUBLES
Report by Dr. John Martin, CPSA Chairman.
Sunday 14September saw the staging of the 2025 English Open Skeet Doubles at Northampton Shooting Ground.
The day dawned grey and overcast with an occasional break in the clouds which confirmed that the un was still there, though few of us were feeling its benefits. everal s uads cancelled on the morning of the shoot with the negative weather forecast being the main reason cited. In the event only the last two s uads of the day had to shoot in the rain.
Ultimately 42 Shooters took to the layouts with the first s uad results coming in at am and the final s uads completing the event at about 3:40pm, accompanied by the ominously forecasted rain. Peter Chester and Paul tokes both finished on so had to shoot-off for the High Gun trophy.
To lessen the pain of losing the shootoff to Peter Chester, Paul Stokes took the lass trophy with his score of . en Woodham, the winner Disabled Sitting also took the A Class High Gun trophy. Likewise, Rebecca Hunt after losing the Ladies title by one clay was awarded the B Class High Gun trophy for a score of with ohn dwards taking lass on a score of .
As always, many thanks to Marti, Roy, and Pete for hosting the event at Northampton Shooting Ground and for making sure it ran smoothly and efficiently despite the weather.
2025 ENGLISH OPEN SKEET DOUBLES
Score
Luckily the rain decided to stop at this point and a tiny glimmer of sun was seen to part the clouds. As this was Skeet Doubles, the shoot-off went immediately to sudden-death pairs on peg four, with Peter completing all four of his targets while Paul dropped one of the second pair. Peter Chester therefore became the 2025 English Open Skeet Doubles Champion, winning the title for the fourth year in succession. Last year he took the High Gun trophy at Doveridge after contending with a three-way shoot-off between himself, David Hendon, and Tom Clifford. In 2023 he took the title after a similar challenge and shoot-off in which he, Becky Kibble, and James Attwood all shot 100-straight. In 2022 he had a fairly trouble-free win at Nottingham and District, after shooting 100-straight against the scored by his nearest rivals, Luke Flynn and Tom Clifford.
The Ladies High Gun trophy went to that paragon of Scottish Skeet, Becky ibble on a score of ust pipping ebecca unt who finished on and Alison Coupe who completed the championship on a score of .
Making a welcome return to competition, Hermione Burns took the Junior High Gun on a very commendable score, for a Fast Trap shooter of with ick ussell taking Veterans High Gun on a score of with ark avis and ohn owry being second and third respectively. Disabled sitting High Gun went to Ben oodham on a score of .

50TH OLYMPIC SKEET HOME INTERNATIONAL
Over the weekend of 9 August 2025, the 50th Home International Olympic Skeet event was held at the National Shooting Ground, Esker, Galway. After a huge effort from the England team travelling to Ireland via many modes of transport, we arrived late on the Thursday evening prior. After a quiet team meal, we looked ahead to a day of training on Friday, before the big day on Saturday.
This year we had three new caps in the England team, Robert Vincent, Charlie Worrall, and unexpectedly (last minute), Harry Reveler. It was fantastic to see Charlie and Harry shooting as Seniors, which really highlights the talent of these young shooters and are great ambassadors for the England OSK team.
Taking the Captains role this year was the experienced Luke Young. Luke did a fantastic ob from start to finish looking after everyone. We all very much enjoyed the Captain’s meal on Friday evening –thanks again to Luke for organising and getting everyone together.
Paul Tudge reports from the National Shooting Ground, Esker, Galway.
Saturday morning came and in typical Irish fashion, around 9am when we were due to kick off, the heavens opened along with gusty winds – perfect shooting weather! This however, did
not deter the England team.
Both Phoebe Bodley-Scott and Arran Ecclestone started strong
with consistent scores. With the other experienced team members, it was a very steady start by all. Come the second rotation, the team stepped it up with even stronger scores. Charlie Worrall and Harry Reveler both shot well, with a 25 and 24 respectively.
The Vets was obviously going to be a good battle between the Scottish and the English (Simon Davidmann and Ragan
Leivers). In the Ladies, with Emily Hibbs and Jess Hambrook, both shooting to the best of their ability, it was looking likely we would take the win. Sophie Herrman and Phoebe Bodley-Scott were also a very Strong team in the Juniors. Andrew Lea, Jessica Burgess, and Toby Etheridge also showing there experience with good team scores all round.
The day concluded with a shoot-off between Arran Ecclestone and Luke oung both finishing on a strong in unforgiving conditions. Aaron took the High Gun title for 2025 – congratulations Arran! Luke picked up Captain’s High Gun which is a fantastic achievement, and Overall Runner-up – congratulations Luke! Charlie and Harry also need a special mention both finishing within a couple of clays away from High Gun.
I can very proudly report that team England took home prizes for winning Senior team, winning Junior team, winning Ladies team, and winning Super Veteran team. Our Veteran team were unfortunate enough to miss out on taking that too, just missing out by one clay. This huge team effort meant that England won the overall event.
Finally I’d like to thank all those that helped run the event this year – to those at the Tullamore Hotel, thank you for looking after us and providing fantastic catering and hospitality. To those at the Esker Shooting ground, thank you for organising and running this event. And from me the manager thank you to the team who were all fantastic all weekend.

2025 HOME INTERNATIONAL
Report by England Team Manager Rebecca Wockenforth.
To say we were a little sodden after practice day would be an understatement! Nevertheless, we embarked upon the 2025 ABT Home International with the amazing English team spirit that I have come to know and love.
Targets were set and we were away on Day 1 at Omagh Clay Shooting Ground. New caps for (seniors) Jim Farrell, Joseph and Antony Robbins, (Junior) Rhys Dixon and (Superveteran) Paul Atkinson. I have to say at this point that the usual suspects did a fantastic job in welcoming our new representatives and supporting all performances with praise and ALOT of banter!

The Scottish ladies team lead with 173 and on 150, only points behind both Ireland and Northern Ireland our ladies were ready to do battle on Day 2!
And so we continued in marginally better weather on the second day with very excellent results. The burger van kept our tummies full and our energy
At this point I would personally like to thank the amazing supporters of our Team England. I have had the pleasure of leading for the past three years and as I bow out I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special mention to the supporting families and friends of our England squad and this year’s Team ascot iss rimrose the extremely well behaved baby girl of our lady shooter elissa allum . These people who show up for their shooters are the backbone of our sport in Trap and must be acknowledged for without them the trophies and occasionally the tears would be worthless. Thankyou! Here’s to next year, a new manager and a Home International in the Republic of Ireland.

25th FITASC Home International
The 25th FITASC Home International hosted by England held at West Midlands Shooting Ground, Hodnet on Saturday 4 October 2025. Report by Richard Weller Team manager.
The course was the usual 100 targets set over four hybrid layouts by Owain Jones. Some of the targets were technical, some distant, above and below the shooter, certainly varied with full use of the well know Hodnet topography.
When the targets were viewed by Captains and Managers, the England Captain Billy Baughan said this will probably be won with an 86. Few straights were expected and as predicted there were none on the day of competition.
The England Team approached the tournament with unrivalled team spirit and comradery, they supported each other throughout the build-up and on the day. All the graft and hard work throughout the team ualification process had been worth it. Congratulations to all the New Caps John Newman, Harry Jude and Benjamin Rivers.

ENGLAND WERE OVERALL WINNING COUNTRY
The overall feeling by the shooters from all the nations was that it was an enjoyable, tough set of targets. The wind of Storm Amy was always going to affect the odd target. The day ran smoothly and to schedule.
A huge Thank You to Owain Jones and all the Staff and Referees at West Midlands Shooting Ground.
The 2025 Home International concluded with a fantastic banquet and prize giving at The Hawkstone Park Hotel. After all the pressure of shooting for your country had finished we could all unwind and enjoy the moment.

NATIONAL INTER-COUNTIES ENGLISH SKEET
The National InterCounties English Skeet competition was held at Dartford Shooting Ground on 4-5 October. I haven’t been to Dartford for a couple of years but it was just where I left it, over the bridge and turn right.
You never expect to get the best weather in October, but Storm Amy made every effort to maximise the discomfort and difficulty of the competition.
Eight squads braved the ranges on the Saturday
NATIONAL INTER-COUNTIES ESK
and a full turnout on the Sunday took the total entries, over both days, to 97.
Mark Chesson, representing Kent, put in an early leading score of 99 which held for much of the competition until Tristan Hockey, straight from a spot of wild fowling, missed one of the pair on peg 4 of his last layout to finish on 99, equalling that shot by Mark.

and hit both pairs. Tristan, sadly, couldn’t follow suit and lost one of the targets which confirmed ark as the igh Gun of the match.
Ladies High Gun went to Northampton shooter and this year‘s British Open Ladies Champion, Isabel Russell, on a score of 94. Tristan Hockey was compensated for losing out on the Championship High Gun title by taking the Juniors High Gun trophy, with Robert Manning taking the Veterans trophy, and Seth Cutter the Colts.
The scene was then set for a shoot-off between the two Kent shooters.
Unsurprisingly, given Mark Chesson was shooting for Kent, the
winning Senior team trophy was secured by Kent on a score of 462 with Essex being the Runner-up team on 459. The winning Ladies team was Warwickshire with a score of 177,Runners-up Suffolk Shooting 172.
Helped by that 99 shot by Tristan hockey, Kent took the Junior teams trophy on 187, with Runners-up Essex shooting 182. Winning Veterans team was Suffolk on 187 with Essex taking second place on 176.
Many thanks to Kelly, Hermione, Steve, and Dave, as well as all the Referees and Dartmouth staff who made a windy weekend an enjoyable and successful championship.
The scene was then set for a shootoff between the two Kent shooters. With storm Amy somewhat reduced, both competitors completed a full round of 25, resulting in a sudden-death shootoff from peg four. ark was up first
BRITISH GRAND PRIX OLYMPIC SKEET
Andrew Lea reports from the event held at Eaton Hall on 13-14 September.
On 13-14 September, the BICTSF hosted the British Grand Prix Olympic Skeet at the newly upgraded Eaton Hall Shooting Ground. 54 shooters made this one of, if not the best represented OSK shoot since Covid. Weather over the weekend was extremely varied, from bright sunshine to torrential downpours. For this event we were also fundraising for Mummy’s Star charity in memory of OSK shooter Sarah Louise Wright. To
many of us she is still fondly referred to as Sarah Gray, and the new Ladies trophy is named after her. Mummy’s Star supports women who receive a cancer diagnosis during pregnancy and up to 12 months after the birth of their baby. They supported Sarah and her family.
ver the weekend raffle tickets were sold to raise funds for the charity and there was an auction at the end of the shoot. Through donations and fundraising I am delighted to say that the OSK community raised £3,272. Thank you to our very generous sponsors for donating pri es for the raffle and auction
Chris Potter Country Sports, The Flower Man, Raisthorpe Manor Fine Foods, Gloucester Clay Shooting Club, Barry Essex, Graham Elliott, Gary Boyd, Rob Vincent, Simon Cox, Richard Bodley-Scott, Phill Hambrook, Tony Gray, Alison Nicol, Andrew Hitchmough, AnneMarie Brooker.
Congratulations to Michael Gilligan who was the Overall High Gun on a great score of 119. He takes home the Dunhill trophy for a record-breaking eighth time. Both Hugh Westminster and Owen Lewis were locked on 118 for Runner-up – after a shoot-off Hugh took second place.
Jessica Hambrook shot an impressive 116 to take the double of the Ladies
title, the Sarah Louise Wright Trophy, and Junior Ladies titles. Maddy Boyd was Ladies Runner-up, with Katy Essex in Third. Katy took Runner-up in Junior Ladies, with Sophie Langton in third.
In Juniors, Charles Worrall took top Junior Men’s high gun and Lee Bowditch was Veteran High Gun.
All category winners received 250 cartridges each very kindly donated by Barry Essex who continues to support the Olympic Skeet shoots.
Finals were added for British Shooting to allow the shoot to count toward selection for the GB team. Due to the high entry, we were able to run three finals concurrently. n the enior en s final ugh estminster won with 54ex60. Ladies were combined into one final for enior and unior adies aty Essex was victorious on 53. In Junior Men’s Henry Lungley took the gold.
Thank you to those that supported the event and donated prizes, time, and money for the charity. Your support helped make this a friendly atmosphere over the weekend.
We would like to thank the team and Eaton Hall for hosting us over the weekend, especially Amy and Clive who were both incredibly supportive throughout.

TO PULLTO PULL
Trigger freeze can have a number of different causes, but it can also be corrected, as Anita North explains.
We all love getting out there and blasting clays, but things don’t always go to plan. One of the problems that some shooters encounter is that they just don’t pull the trigger when they should –they develop trigger freeze. What is the cause? What can be done to resolve it?
COULD IT BE THE HARDWARE?
There are lots of things that might be behind it and need to be considered to help you. All sorts of physical and/or mental reasons could be the cause and all will need their own action to remedy. Let’s start considering a selection of these to think about. Is your gun in good working order? Has it a fault that makes you question its reliability and makes you reluctant to use it? Does your gun fit you ave you been on a fitness campaign shifted some kilos, toned your muscles? Does your gun still fit you after that f it does not fit correctly you may experience more recoil or lose your view of the clay when
If you don’t see the clay properly, how can you shoot it properly?
RELEASE TRIGGER GUNS
you mount your gun. Is your hand in the correct position to pull the trigger? Is your finger position on the trigger where it should be? Is it trigger freeze or is it that you simply can’t pull the trigger effectively and consistently? Then there’s ammunition - what cartridges do you use? Are they particularly hard hitting? Have you changed recently? Persistent and continued recoil problems can lead to an
One solution that is chosen by some shooters is to use a release trigger gun. It is not one that is taken lightly and is not a first choice solution to the problem, but a last resort to continue in the sport we all love so much.
Never heard of a release trigger gun? Such a gun is set up so the trigger is pulled back and you release the trigger to fire the gun. A release trigger gun might be release on the first barrel and standard pull back on the second or it might be release on both barrels. While release trigger shotguns are not allowed in Olympic disciplines (and have not been for some years now), they are allowed in other disciplines. I spoke to two shooters who have turned to this option.
Ian Ross is a trap shooter who has represented Scotland in DTL and ABT. Several years ago he developed trigger freeze after a period of using a gun with a faulty trigger. He moved to a release trigger gun and it made all the difference. He now shoots a Beretta that is a factory-made release trigger gun and continues to enjoy his sport.
Rob Gray from Hertfordshire is a Veteran Sporting shooter who has multiple England caps. He developed trigger freeze
at the age of 50, especially in high-pressure situations.
understandable reluctance to pull the trigger to avoid any pain felt.
How is your eyesight? When was the last time you got it tested? If you don’t see the clay properly, how can you shoot it properly?
And how is your general health? There are cases where trigger freeze has been caused by shooters having carpel tunnel syndrome and surgery fi ed the issue and removed the problem.
He said: “I did lots of research, tried lighter load cartridges (24g), hypnotherapy sessions and even tried using in-ear and over-ear hearing protection to block out more noise, but nothing worked.”
He finally made the switch. He bought a Caesar Guerini and had it converted to release/release arrangement by the importers, Anglo Italian Arms. Rob said: “It did take me months to get used to using the gun. It was particularly important to learn and follow the correct procedure if you get a ‘no bird’, but eventually it became second nature and transformed my shooting.”
With so many different potential causes of trigger freeze there are different types of solution, but the good news is that there is a solution to be had.
UNDER PRESSURE…
The feeling of pressure in a competition environment can also be a contributory factor to trigger freeze – that feeling of a need to perform well. Or it might be pressure in other aspects of your work or family life. You might just try to control that shoot process too much – using the thinking/teaching side of the brain rather than the doing side. r your confidence levels may have dropped and you have levels of doubt creeping in. Even the people who perform at the pinnacle of all sports suffer peaks and troughs and confidence is critical. Doubt can be extremely corrosive.
WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?
With so many different potential causes of trigger freeze there are different types of solution, but the good news is that there is a solution to be had. First of all, you must seek help if it’s effecting your shooting. Do some research, but also work with a coach to go through any potential causes and their appropriate solutions. If you can, try and recall when it first happened It’s like diagnosing any other health, DIY or IT problem – when did you first notice it as something different o through the examples above and think if any are relevant. Then have a discussion with a coach, or in fact anyone if you don’t have a coach. The advantage of laying out the facts to a third party is the perspective that will give firstly to
you when you describe the problem and secondly when you get feedback. Once you have done this, you can come up with an action plan.
t might be a simple fi or it might need more work. For instance, it might involve going to shoot a different discipline, learning to relax and enjoy your shooting again. It might be changing your gun fit or your ammunition if you are feeling lots of recoil. You might need to get an eyesight test and wear vision correction glasses or contact lenses as the solution. You could need to work with a sports psychologist to help with relaxation when shooting, to build robust mental routines and strategies for mental responses when you train and compete. Hypnotherapy has reportedly been a successful strategy.
So, if you develop a problem with your shooting, don’t struggle on regardless.
o and seek help. o some research but don’t be led to believe that there is only one fi whatever the root cause of the problem.

PASS THE REMOTE
Developing technology has helped one company deliver systems which are helping shooting grounds to improve their offering, as Martin Puddifer discovers.
In 2021, while sharpening his own skills on the clay ground, Brad Gothard noticed something that would soon change the direction of his career. His coach was struggling with the limitations of a remote control for a trap, holding it high in the air in order to fire reliably across uneven terrain. Brad, who had a varied technical background offered to build a replacement set of remotes. ositive feedback soon followed
and further market research revealed that many available options were outdated in both design and functionality.
This marked the foundation of FieldTech, a company that now supplies a range of electronic systems for clay shooting. What began as a twobutton Sporting and Skeet controller has since expanded into four- and six-button models, voice-activated systems, larger lithium-powered devices with improved water resistance and shock protection, and specialist products such as Compak sequencers and Sportrap controllers designed to streamline competition management. Among its most notable developments are the GameLink Simulated Game controllers, which have quickly gained a foothold thanks to fle ible programming that allows operators to tailor simulated game days with ease.
A MATTER OF RANGE
FieldTech’s early adopters were smaller grounds, coaches and operators of simulated game shoots. The company now supplies equipment both in the and farther afield with customers in the nited States, Australia and Scandinavia. A key factor in its international growth has been the wireless five stand microphone system which has attracted attention in markets with limited alternatives.
Across its customer base, one recurring attraction has been transmission range. FieldTech devices are capable of firing traps reliably at distances in e cess of one mile, even where woodland or awkward terrain would normally interfere with signal strength. Added features such as solo delay countdowns and following pairs are provided as standard on equipment often priced below competing models that lack them.
Whereas larger companies spread responsibilities across teams of engineers, developers, designers and marketing staff, Brad draws on his own career experience to manage those tasks himself.
Above: Brad Gothard
RAPID DECISION MAKING
Much of FieldTech’s ability to keep prices lower than established players comes down to structure. Whereas larger companies spread responsibilities across teams of engineers, developers, designers and marketing staff, Brad draws on his own career experience to manage those tasks himself. This reduces overheads, speeds up the product development cycle and allows him to maintain
viable margins while keeping end prices accessible to clubs with tighter budgets.
“I can usually take a product from concept to manufacture over a weekend,” Brad explains, adding that larger firms may spend weeks or months navigating departmental sign-offs and associated costs before bringing a new product to market.
FieldTech’s approach to research and development is hands-on and iterative. New designs are tested not only by Brad himself but also by selected customers whose feedback helps determine whether a product is refined for wider release.
An example of this process came with the simulated game controllers. Early users highlighted the inconvenience of having to reset configurations after powering the unit off. FieldTech responded by adjusting the software to store the last used settings. Similarly, reports of lithium battery packs being damaged when left discharged prompted investment in protection systems, ensuring units could now be recharged from flat without lasting harm.
FieldTech maintains open support lines seven days a week with the view that its customers are “part of the family”. With most clay shooting taking place at weekends, the company aims to provide immediate assistance should equipment issues arise during valuable leisure time or in the middle of competitions. Practical guidance is supplemented by YouTube demonstration videos designed to give new users a clear overview without requiring extensive manuals or training sessions.
Having established a core product line for smaller clubs and coaches, FieldTech is now looking to expand into larger commercial grounds. Development is underway on counter systems capable of supporting all major disciplines, marking the next stage in Brad’s plan to scale his business internationally while maintaining the lean operational model that has defined its success to date.

Hello Gloucestershire – First of all, my apologies for not giving you anything to read in the last issue. Between work, family, and life in general, things have been pretty hectic. As a result, the time I’ve been able to dedicate to shooting –both writing about it and actually pulling the trigger – has been limited. In no particular order, here are some of the notable scores from the past couple of months, starting with the British Open Sporting and Sportrap at Eaton Hall (probably not the best place to start, as Gloucestershire might as well have stayed at home – myself included). Chris Biddlecombe led the county with 102/120, four ahead of Sean Ponting on 98/120, and eight ahead of Steve Lovatt and Nick Portlock, both on 95/120. We only had eight shooters in the Sportrap, with CB topping the county again on 88/100. ike many of us it was my first time shooting there since the new owners took over – and what a phenomenal ob they ve done. n such difficult times for shooting in general, having a facility like that available is incredibly
Well done to all our members who stepped up out of their comfort zone to shoot for the County in the Clubman event at Eaton Hall on 27 September. Although we weren’t in the trophies and it wasn’t an easy course, hopefully everyone enjoyed the event from both a social and competitive viewpoint. We were certainly very proud of all our competitors and thankful for their support and commitment. Hopefully you have all received your Clubman badges for recognition for representing your County at this event.
The DTL Grand Masters held at au delga on eptember saw an rice in the Champion spot with 200/597 and in the super flash clay final. n the Veterans class John Mason took gold with 570/600 with Chris Moule close behind in silver with 569/600.
No room for the Inter-Counties Sporting and Area Sportrap, so I will report on these events in the ne t issue but we have high hopes for some good final scores in the Lyalvale Cup for both Ladies and Juniors. Thanks to everyone who has supported the County over the season, either as entrant or support crew!
valuable and really makes the sport look professional. After so many requests at various championships, they included a live streamed final which worked well for a first attempt. ell done aton all.
In much better news for Gloucestershire, we did a sterling job at the Inter-Counties Sporting at the end of September, taking Gold over our fellow West Midlands counties – by just one target! A huge congratulations to Ade Johnson on his monster 93, which secured us the title and placed him joint High Gun across the shoot. Everyone else in the team held their own, with solid scores all round. Thanks to Nick Portlock for the organisation.
We also had strong results in the Skeet Inter-Counties, where Cliff Gardner, Martin Knapman, Brian Robinson, Lucy Harvey, Jo Knapman, and Megan Powell all shot well to secure team Golds. Liam Richings also enjoyed Skeet success, becoming County ESK champion and taking bronze in the English Open SKD.
In club shoots – and again, in no particular order – Martin Ferrett won A Class at Coley’s on 3 September, the same fi ture where artin napman took oint first in lass. n oley s ctober fi ture ean aloney finished second in lass. epperd was oint first in lass on eptember at estfield the same

At the time of writing, we are coming to the end of a very busy and successful year for our shooters. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who have supported the competitions and events organised this year.
For such a large county we have very few shooters participating at competition level but we hope to encourage more of you to join us in events over the coming year.
With this in mind we would like to thank the 11 shooters who attended the Clubman competition on 27 September at Eaton Hall. This event is meant to encourage less e perienced competitors by way of introduction to a team competition and the county, as ever, entered a team in this spirit. We hope you enjoyed this event. The County Secretary has been interested in the feedback

There are a couple of county championships still to come, which ll report on in the ne t issue. hope everyone has a great winter – I know many people tend to do a bit less shooting at this time of year, but hopefully we can all keep supporting our local grounds and breaking a few clays whenever we can.
Lastly, a big congratulations to our county Chair, Jenny Young, who has announced she’s pregnant! If Sean’s shooting is anything to go by, it must have taken a few attempts to hit the target, so well done mate.
Happy shooting – Tom.
Coronation Cup 2025
The County has a new National Champion. Congratulations go to Peter Bridger on winning the Coronation Cup. This competition has been running since 1953 (the clue is in the name) and is based on four major CPSA British and English National Championships. By putting in solid performances at the Dougal Memorial DTL, the English Open DTL, the British Open ESK and the British Open ESP, Pete demonstrated his all-round talent and finished as hampion after missing out on the title in 2024 by four points. This is a very prestigious award with Peter joining a very illustrious list of British Shooting greats.
At international level Malcolm Grant and Trevor Lewis represented Great Britain at the 35th World Championship in Italy for ZZ/Helice. Malcolm was part of the senior team placed third and Trevor was a member of the vets finishing si th well done both.

East Midlands Directors Trophy Competition
With 13 points from the last two competitions, and maximum points from the previous four competitions, we not only held on to our lead, but increased the gap to eight points clear of our nearest rivals Suffolk. This is only the second time that we have won this competition since it started in 2010 and we did it in record style. We smashed the previous record score by seven points. Thank you and congratulations to everyone who made this happen. Your support is greatly appreciated.
I was chatting with a county shooter the other day at a local gun shop and now that I come to write this October report I'm quite glad that he said that nobody read the county reports! Why? I hear nobody ask, well it’s because in the last issue I wrote that the annual Celebration Evening was to be held on 22 October, a Wednesday. Quite why I typed that day's date I will never know because it is to be held on Saturday 25 October at the Overstone Manor on Ecton Lane Sywell and starts at 7pm. Honestly, you just can't get the staff these days. As I earlier said I'm quite glad that nobody reads this so everyone will come on the right day because they get information from the county website, Facebook and NSG clubhouse posters which have always had the correct date published and from chatting with Marty, Roy or Pete at the ground.
14 Sep: English Open Skeet Doubles
There were 40 guns for this from all over Great Britain. Mick Russell won the Veteran category with a score of 92ex100 whilst with an equal score Leon Gill was the best local Senior but six clays away from the Senior title. Izzy Russell was the best local lady shooter. Congratulations to them.
The county competition season has come to an end. Competitions for all disciplines have been set and winners in each of the categories announced with the exception of the last one, Skeet Doubles, postponed from August. As I'm writing this has not yet been shot so if you want to know the winner, please look at the website. The late timing of the Skeet Doubles also means that I can't report on the results of the Supreme Championship this edition. I'll be able to update that information on the county website as soon as the competition closes and in the next Pull! report.
There have been a few new Colts shooting this year which is wonderful to see, hopefully the free entry to the county championships has helped them to gain experience in competition shooting and may have increased their enjoyment in the sport.
Regarding the regional Director's Trophy, we improved on our final position of last year. We managed to get teams for six of the eight disciplines and took points from each of them. The last was the Inter-County Sporting competition when Team Manager Marco Loxley gathered a team bursting with shooters to go to our good friends at Sporting
Targets. I think everyone had a good time and points were gained. Thank you to everyone who took part it was wonderful to see such a full team sheet. All names will join the others who have represented the county in other disciplines and, as a thank you, one name will receive a cash prize and everyone will receive 25 cartridges for every county appearance as a thank you. Please collect them from Marty at NSG.

What a season of championships it's been! A few more results to report now we're well into Autumn.
Starting back on 13 September, Wendy Allen went solo to North Cornwall for the South West DTL competition. Yes, Wendy was the only Somerset member to enter but she came away with the Ladies trophy! Great job Wendy.
Again on Saturday 13 September we entered a team in Hampshire at Owls Lodge for the Inter County English Sporting Champs. Unfortunately we didn't win any trophies but certainly didn't embarrass ourselves with Matt Tompkins hitting a not too shabby 90 and Reuben Box (Colt) 86!
Sunday 21 September Julian Fairburn arranged a team to head down to Two Counties in Cornwall for the Inter County ABT Champs. I don't think we returned with any awards, but Martin Howe was only 2 targets behind the top score!
Back in the county at Brook Bank for our final county championship of the year Skeet Doubles on Sunday 28 September. Congratulations to our winners, Tony Ellis (Champ), Justine Howe (Ladies) and Jess Milnes (Junior). There was a good turnout of 26 entries for this event which involved shooters from seven counties!
As this is the last report of the year I thought it would be worth a look back over the past months and reflect on clay shooting in Wiltshire. And what a year it has been. Despite the grim weather during the first uarter we have had a summer to remember, which has made the shooting so much more enjoyable while shoot organisers
ust time to s uee e in two more regional events before this report is posted – not literally!
aturday ctober we fielded teams for the Inter Counties Super Sporting at Ashcombe in Devon. No trophies but lots of smiles from our shooters wearing their team fleeces think they needed them in the bad weather that day! Guy Coleman was the highest Somerset shooter at the event – well done.
Sunday 5 October we were well represented back at Two Counties where our ladies and veteran teams won their categories, and our Senior team came second – very well done. I also note that Martin Howe won the high gun with 292 – well worth a mention. A fab team photo all in new fleeces was sent back and is now proudly posted on our Facebook page – excellent!
Although the County funds have paid for the new fleeces we e tremely appreciate Coombe Farm Sporting for donating us again with badges – they're splendid and all our team members in 2025 will be supplied with one. Thank you, Julian of Coombe Farm Sporting.
That's all for now folks. I'll return for the next report for January with a few more regional and national inter county events to report on – mainly results, but maybe some news! This is probably the report in which I can send you seasonal greetings – so have a good one!
and course setters have been able to stage hugely enjoyable events.
Special mention should be made not only to the hard-working team at Barbury, led by Huw Stephens and Josh Brown, but unsung heroes of our sport like Sean Ponting who every month hosts his Gunsite Registered Sporting tucked away in the Marlborough Downs. Sean is a man who loves his sport and does his best to encourage youngsters to participate by offering accompanied under 16’s free shooting. And he is a cracking shot!
The same can be said of Will Thatcher and Fran Mattinson, who stage county shoots and regular practice shoots at their Ham Cross ground, as well as devoting time to the CPSA county committee. At the same time it is worth giving thought to the broader world of shooting. There are times when our sport seems to be under constant threat – either from the politicians or the police. And whether we like it or not steel shot will be coming to a shooting ground near you in fairly short order. It is fair to say we are blessed in Wiltshire with an understanding police authority in regard to shotgun certificate renewals and applications. The Wiltshire Firearms Licensing department comprises some dedicated staff who are helpful and efficient which is a lot more than can be said of some authorities. On behalf of all Wiltshire shooters, thank you.

members over the year, it is gratifying to see how much progress has been made and how well many of them have shot. It has been great to see two of our ladies come to the fore. Jemma Paul and Tamsin Holmes have both dominated the Ladies category at our various County competitions with Jemma picking up gongs for the AR, ESP, and ESK while Tamsin took the honours for STR and DTL. Well done ladies, and we hope to see you both out in the field next season.
Sean Teversham shone through at both AR and ESK while our latest recruit, Matt Hance was County Champion for both ESP and STR. It is also worth mentioning that stalwart of the county scene, Bryan Kinch, who took the Veterans’ titles for STR and ESP. We should also note that hristian chofield took both the ounty and Veterans title for the ABT while Alex Spurrell clinched the DTL County title while dad Mark won the Veterans cup.

There were dark rain clouds but no rain and very little wind providing another close finish in the nter ounties keet at Dartford on 28 September. The Kent Team of Jack Goodhew, Mark Chesson, Russell Swain, Daren Ollerenshaw and Michael Kite scored 479 to win by the narrowest of margins with Essex one target behind on 478. It has also been a fantastic year for our Juniors Ben Rivers and Edward Cleverley who both shot nationally, here and abroad, representing both England and GB. A very impressive performance from these young and upcoming shooters. We should also note that our very own Josh Brown is representing GB at the forthcoming FITASC competitions.
All the above were recognised at the Wilts CPSA AGM, held in mid-October, when Chairman Simon Cuthbert presented them all with a variety of cups, shields and plaques. A further thank you to Barbury for making the event more special by organising a registered ESP shoot and laying on food and drink.
Finally, I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their hard work and commitment to the Wilts CPSA cause. Simon Cuthbert, Jamie Campbell, Steve Webb, Will Thatcher, Fran Mattinson, Huw Stephens, Josh Brown and Sally Vivian.

FALCONSTRIKE HYDRAULIC RECOIL
SYSTEM
SHOOT WITH MORE COMFORT, ACCURACY AND ENDURANCE
Some shooters are sensitive to the punishing effects of recoil, so we’ve created a multi-fit hydraulic recoil pad for wood stocks that utilizes dampening technology borrowed from the aerospace industry that dramatically reduces recoil: 80% Less Recoil Energy, 35% Less Muzzle Lift, 25% Less Peak Force, 35% Less Rock Back to give youth shooters greater accuracy, less flinching and a better shooting experience. No measuring, no grinding, no hassle.
Fits Stocks: 4-1/2” – 4-3/4”
For Wood and Synthetics Stocks
Thickness / Length of Pull (LOP): 1-3/16”
Weight: 7.5 ounces
FalconStrike mounts quickly and easily to your small shotgun or hunting rifle wooden or synthetic buttstock with only two screws.
