WELCOME

This is my favourite time of year with longer days and everywhere looking greener! At the time of writing, we’ve had a spell of unseasonably warm and sunny weather in contrast to this time last year when the April showers seemed to go on forever!

May is usually the start of our championship season with the English Open English Sporting, but this year we kicked off with the English Open Super Sporting at Garlands in April and shortly after, the English Open Sportrap at Ian Coleys before moving onto the English pen English Skeet at Eaton all and finally the English Sporting at High Lodge in mid-May. Quite a busy few weeks indeed and we will report on these in forthcoming issues.

I’m delighted to welcome Tom Starkey from Starkey Outdoors in conjunction with Pilla Sport, as a new CPSA Headline Sponsor, and they will be attending most of our championships this year and adding generously to our prize funds. If you see Tom do say hello and check out his extensive range of lenses. You can read about how the lenses work in our article on page 35.

During May, we also attend the National Shooting Show in Harrogate with our CPSA Clayline, giving 100’s of visitors to the show a chance to try clay pigeon shooting under the e pert guidance of our ualified instructors. If you are going to the show with family and friends who haven’t tried our sport before, do head out to the clayline where they can have a go.

Wherever you are shooting this spring be safe, enjoy and shoot straight!

NEW STARKEY OUTDOORS & PILLA SPORT HEADLINE SPONSORSHIP

We are excited to announce our new partnership with Tom Starkey from Starkey Outdoors in conjunction with Pilla Sport as a new headline sponsor for the 2025 season.

ENGLAND SPORTING SELECTION CHANGE

After a review from the English Sporting Sub Committee and the Board it has been decided to make a positive change in selection for 2026 and beyond.

We will now be selecting the team based on the previous years scores.

We believe this will be beneficial to those going for the England team due to the following reasons:

• Spreading the shoots out over the full calendar year.

• Includes our two major sporting championships EO & BO ESP

• Allowing team members time to train and bond with fellow team members

• Allowing team members time to save for the England team competitions Home Internationals / WESP

• Allowing the team time to

Pilla shooting glasses are the must have for every shooter’s kit bag, and Tom will be on hand at most of our championships this year to guide you through the range of lenses available, plus generously supporting our prize funds.

We look forward to working with Tom and Pilla during this busy competition season.”

prepare around commitments.

• Arrange shooting days for team members to get together for training and promotion

• Helps with team kit for both CPSA HQ suppliers/stock and also the England team member to ‘wear in’.

Please see below the new process:

NEW 20G WHITE GOLD BY POPULAR DEMAND

Expanding Gamebore’s long established and award winning White Gold range, the new 20g White Gold loads deliver the professional level competition performance of their 12g counterpart, for competitive shooters that prefer a smaller gauge shotgun.

Made using the same quality components, such as Gamebore’s exclusive Diamond Shot and specially blended Vectan Powders, shooters can expect a level of performance worthy of the world’s toughest competition arenas, whilst experiencing less discomfort thanks to its lower recoil.

Available in 24 and 28grm loads, with 7.5 or 8 shot, and Plastic wad. For more information please visit gamebore.com

The team will be selected using shoots from the previous year.

There are seven selection shoots that run between March and September each year. One is held in each CPSA Region.

We also include the English Open Sporting and British Open Sporting as part of the selection.

Scores are submitted after the last

shoot but the best five from seven scores may only be needed to count.

In the event of a tie for a place in the England Team, the highest score from the British Open will be used to decide the place. If the tie still exists a count back from a Selection Shoot attended by all parties concerned will be used to decide the place.”

PREVIEW ENGLISH SPORTING

English Open English Sporting Championship will be held at High Lodge on 14-18 May 2025.

Unusually, the English Open English Sporting isn’t kicking off the major championship season this year. That honour falls to the English Open Super Sporting at Garlands and then the English Open Sportrap at Ian Coley’s, but the traditional English Sporting title is still the big draw and fiercely competed for.

Over 1,000 shooters have booked onto this event at the Premier Plus shooting ground, High Lodge Leisure, home of the great John Bidwell! They are old hands at running CPSA championships, having hosted many English and British Open’s over the years and we look forward to yet another great event!

Faulds winning Juniors on 108 and John Porter winning Colts with a very impressive 114.

As per 0 , the E ESP will be first past the post with 120 targets set over 15 stands. The top scores in class and category will win with only shoot-offs to determine any ties on Sunday 18th May. We caught up with Andy Coppen from High Lodge who told us: We’re delighted to be hosting the CPSA English Open Sporting again. We’ve set a course to be both challenging and entertaining and look forward to welcoming everyone back to High Lodge.

Last years English Open saw some remarkable shooting with James Bradley-Day setting the early pace with 117ex120, which most thought would be the winning score, only to be eclipsed by Billy Baughan on 118 and Mark Winser on 119, just one away from a perfect score and enough to secure the prestigious English Open title. Mark went onto win the English Open Super Sporting at Barbury in August, just two away on 98ex100 with another stella performance.

Other notable results from last year include Ceyla Ismet winning Ladies on 107, Charlie

PREVIEW

DTL WEEKEND

To be held at Bywell Shooting Ground in Northumberland on 5-7 June.

The DTL Weekend will return to Bywell for it’s 15th consecutive year on the 5 - 7 June.

Remarkably, for a competition of this calibre, there were no class shoot-offs in the English Open as the conditions proved exceptionally challenging. We welcome back our headline sponsors Browning, Eley and Swatcom and welcome new headline sponsors Pilla/Starkey Outdoors who are all

The Henry family have been running Bywell for over 40 years and no doubt this year’s championship will be another finely honed event for DTL shooters to enjoy. Last year they hosted both the DTL Weekend and the World DTL to much acclaim, so just having the DTL Weekend this year should be breeze! “We are excited to be hosting the 15th consecutive DTL Weekend. It’s a great opportunity for trap shooters to fill their boots with three different competitions over the weekend.”

and dive, it was Richard Greenlaw who conquered the tricky conditions to take High Gun with 99/296.

First up is the Sponsored Day on Thursday 5th, followed by the Dougall Memorial on Friday 6th and the English Open on Saturday 7th. Last year saw unseasonal weather conditions with high winds and cold conditions but as many contestants mentioned then, it was the same for everyone and the cream always rises to the top!

On day two and the prestigious Dougall Memorial, (celebrating 129 years this year), the blustery conditions continued with some serious gusts affecting the targets, so it was a fine effort by Daniel Beedan to shoot a 100/298 to secure one of the oldest titles in clay shooting.

With winds gusting 20 - 30mph on the Sponsored Day making the targets duck

Last but certainly not least, the English Open DTL was held on the Saturday and the tough conditions persisted. Windy and cold but the sun did put in a welcome appearance to make it feel like a good April day rather than a day in summer. Nick Hayley put in an incredible score of 100/299 early in the day and this held out to give Nick the win and the English Open DTL High Gun title.

contributing to a great prize fund split over the three events. Please remember, you must be present at the relevant prize ceremony to win any sponsored prizes for that event. In addition to the prize fund, the Browning Challenge returns with five guns up for grabs for the highest combined scores over the 3 days across class AA - C and Overall High Gun. You must shoot all three days and be present at the prize giving ceremony after the English Open DTL.

INTERNATIONAL

Sarah Daly discusses course building and refereeing.

COURSE BUILDING

We often don’t think about the work that is involved in building a successful FITASC Sporting (FSP), Compak or English Sporting course, so I had a chat with Jamie Peckham who has worked as a Course Builder all over the world.

“For FSP I will set traps up to approx 180 degrees, for English Sporting I tend to set them slightly narrower. I use a range finder, which is critical, as a new ground can have an optical illusion of greater or shorter distance, which is why I use a Range Finder; the FSP targets are unlikely to be over 65 meters (approx 71 yards), for English they are more likely to be 50-55 mtr (approx 54-60 yards).

“I try to keep the colours simple, generally using just a handful of colours such as lime, blaze/orange, black and occasionally white, the colour choice partly depending on the background.

“Over a multi-day competition, I tend to not use many battue as their flight line can change significantly each day, dependent upon the weather.

“I spend two or three days walking around to get a feeling of the terrain, then

I work out which traps to use in given sites, then the groundsmen place the traps, but I like to be there to set them to ensure my flight lines are what I think they should be! I used to shoot some of the targets years ago in the early days of course setting, but now I rarely do.

The first couple of hours of the competition I tend to walk around the ground, ensuring everything is as it should be, but only fully relax when the competition is finished.

and Compak Asian Champs/ Thailand; Compak GP/ Kazakhstan; British Open Sporting/Swinton.

“I love the challenge of different terrains; the expectations of the organisers and the similarities/variations in different counrties.”

REFEREEING

Hugh Smith is the FITASC President of the Refereeing Commission and a Chief Referee for FITASC Sporting and Compak. Some of the observations and incites Hugh made whilst chatting to him:

See websites for international results and videos: ISSF: www.issf-sports.org/ competitions/results.ashx

“One of the major challenges for referees is the lack of understanding from the competitors, they often assume the referee is just there, and not the brightest light in desert, which is way off the mark, as I have had bank managers, pilots and

CEO’s to name but a few refereeing for me.

“They should be given due respect for what they are doing: their job is to ensure the rules are adhered to, and implemented in a fair manner. Everyone has a fair chance of breaking the targets within accordance of the rules, but refs are in the immediate firing line if something is not to the competitors liking. In Sporting in particular, if there is a really bad target, then common sense applies if a target is a ‘no target’, with the refs applying fair play and common sense, no matter the skill level or who is in the shooting position.

“Refs are there to do the ordinary things exceptionally well, and one of the refs who applies that ethos is Lorna Glover, who has just been recognised and won CPSA awards for refereeing.

“Training for FITASC refs requires pass mark of 90%+, for a regional ref, then they go out and gain experience and knowledge, taking about three years to make the International level.”

Refs often have long days with very few, if any, true breaks, it can be such a thankless task, so please demonstrate due respectwhat a treat when someone leaves the stand and says: ‘thank you’!

KEITH MURRAY

Born 20 October 1933, Keith Murray died peacefully in his sleep, 22 March 2025. There will be a family funeral.

Keith’s dry humour and extensive knowledge of the domestic and international shotgun scene, his involvement in the ISSF over the years has been extensive: a member of the ISSF Shotgun Committee from 2002-2010, the Technical Committee from 2010-2014, the Rules Committee since 2011 and as an ISSF Shotgun Referee and Judges course tutor and examiner, often supported by Barry Dobbs and Ray Dixson.

The ISSF Blue Cross, the highest ISSF recognition, was awarded to Keith in 2015 on

his retirement from the ISSF.

The ISSF comment: “As he announces his retirement, the ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña, the ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber, and the whole shooting sport family, would like to thank him for his valuable service ..... Keith Murray has been a key player of the International Shooting Sport Federation, serving the ISSF Shotgun Committee and the ISSF Technical Committee for 12 years.”

Demetris Lordos: “As Chairman of the ISSF Shotgun Committee I proposed Keith (Murray) as a member of the committee to the ISSF President in 2002. Following on for 20 years, Keith was my advisor and close friend, he was like a father and brother.

Keith was a relentless supporter of the Olympic disciplines for many decades.

My condolences go out to his family and friends.”

In addition to his international involvement, Keith was a relentless supporter of the Olympic disciplines for many decades as a national and international Olympic Skeet shooter, coach, including Kelly Irvin who was capped 15 times,

plus roles in British Shooting, the CPSA and as a founder member of the Southend Gun Club in 1962.

Keith was one of the founder members of Southend and District Gun Club which opened on Friday 26th September 1962 as a skeet ground, with the members shooting 725 targets that evening, from the 600 that were purchased –thank goodness for pick-ups! On a personal note, I will be forever grateful to Keith for all the support he gave me as a mentor during my time as an ISSF Referee/ Judge/ESC Technical Committee member.

CARTRIDGE

TCORNER

here are several variations of trap shooting, and the differences can sometimes be confusing. However, each discipline primarily differs by the number of traps used and the allowed shot weight. For example, some disciplines allow up to 28g, while others, such as Olympic Trap (OT), only allow up to 24g. What they all share, though, is that the target is moving away from the shooter.

The three disciplines I’m covering for cartridge performance are DTL, ABT, and UT, all allowing up to a 28g load. For further information on DTL, ABT, and UT disciplines, please visit CPSA Disciplines.

CPSA VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

HAVILL

Julia Havill won Volunteer of the Year in the 2025 CPSA Awards and she tells Alex Sayer about her approach to team management, the threat to Skeet and her famous cakes.

“Poor old Skeet is definitely at the bottom of the pile laments ulia avill, CPSA Volunteer of the ear 0 . Well known for her straight talking and her homebaked cakes, ulia admits she comes at things with common sense rather than a university degree . What really matters is her e perience in Skeet. Both she and her husband Chris got their England caps together in 01 and it’s this that gives her such a cutting edge as manager of the English Skeet team.

While there is no uestion that Sporting is more popular as a discipline, ulia points out that very few sporting competitions see competitors hit full marks, i.e. 100 targets. In contrast, past skeet selection shoots have seen two sets of nine hundred straights’ and 1 hundred straights’ over the course of a weekend at Eriswell Lodge and East orkshire Gun Club respectively. There’s only one word to describe what that felt like: agnificent If you wanted to shoot for England would skeet be an easier way in Possibly, but you do have the usual suspects who often fill the spaces. If, for whatever reason, they aren’t there, that would create a vacancy. And ulia recommends anyone should try to join the team and confirms it is easier as a junior because they: Float in and out and the younger ones are into everything, a bit of Sporting, Compak, they try it all

JERSEY AND CAKES

ulia herself started out in skeet in Derbyshire, but now ottingham & District is her home ground and where she does most of her volunteering either in the kitchen or refereeing. ualified to referee ABT and DTL, she is an asset to any shoot or ground and even referees the sporting at ottingham when the RAF have their annual shoot.

The Jersey trip was a highlight because nobody knew how it would go, unchartered territory if you will.

And what about those famous cakes I’m sure that’s the reason I get invited to places . Laughing heartily, ulia recalls the time they went to ersey. Classed as one of the best ome Internationals, not least because the whole team went and it was ersey’s first time hosting, it sticks in ulia’s mind because they contacted her prior to arrival to ask if she needed an oven for the cakes. I told them no, I’m bringing them with me on the ferry but thanks anyway. The ersey trip was a highlight because nobody knew how it would go, unchartered territory if you will. It was a roaring success because: It’s about being with the team, the team spirit is unbelievable and there are no prima donnas.

THE CHALLENGE OF MANAGEMENT

When asked for some insight as to how to manage a team, ulia says: All I do is rally troops, but you can see there is much more to it than that. As for the shooters themselves, some of them want to

stay in the team to shoot against every nation –Northern Ireland up next this August Bank Holiday – then of course there’s the lure of captaincy. Quite a few are eligible this year and again this helps to keep people in the team once they have little else left to prove. “The England badge is, quite rightly the pinnacle.”

In terms of performance Julia confesses: ‘I always used to think, in the case of football, how can it be the manager’s fault if the team loses? He’s not on the pitch. But I see things differently now.” “Nurturing,” is how she describes herself. ‘I’m very protective of all the team, I know what it’s like –you shoot well, you feel euphoric.” It’s when the shooting doesn’t go well that a team needs a great manager. ulia recalls how one junior, in his first year on the team, had a bad round and wanted to go home, then went on to shoot 25 straight. This is where the management comes in.

In the case of football, how can it be the manager’s fault if the team loses? He’s not on the pitch. But I see things differently now.

As for getting into the England skeet team Julia says: The bottom four or five places are always up for grabs even with seniors, but the vets and super vets are the hardest categories to get into because the shooters are so good.”

WHAT NEXT FOR SKEET?

It’s definitely the poor relation, says ulia who acknowledges sporting is “where it’s at” because they get the numbers of entries. There is hope though. Eaton Hall Shooting Ground is hosting the English Open skeet this year, an event that has gone down from three days to two, like the British Open skeet. Julia is really delighted about the development at Eaton Hall. She was a fan of Doveridge (the previous incarnation of the ground) because of the setting, but the new owners fill her with a sense of promise. The whole workforce there are shooters and it is going to be “one heck of a venue”. She hopes they will support skeet and hopefully let some Friday shooting creep back in. Speaking further about how skeet is treated in the shooting world Julia said: “We don’t care any less than Sporting people. We are still sad when we lose and happy when we win – it’s just the same, but we are seen as different.’ Ultimately and like in her own life, Julia believes the shooting should do the talking.

PILLA EYEWEAR – CPSA SPONSORS STARKEY OUTDOOR –

We spoke to Tom Starkey about their Pilla products.

When asked to describe Pilla, there is a short answer and a much longer one!

THE SHORT ANSWER

• Pilla exclusively uses Zeiss lenses. You simply cannot buy a better quality lens.

• Pilla is recognised as the market leader in quality eyewear for shooting.

• Lenses go from the darkest (9.5) to the lightest (98). Spread a three lens kit over this range and you will be well on your way.

THE LONG ANSWER

Pilla has developed eyewear for ultimate performance and is the very best in technology and execution, from handmade Italian frames to the most technologically advanced lenses in the world. Pilla engineer their products exclusively with ZEISS, to deliver game-changing lenses. The range is vast, so understandably users can find it a little daunting. ere is some information to help you choose the lenses that are best for you. Of course, you cannot beat trying them in person and Starkey Outdoor will be at all the CPSA majors in 2025, so you can do exactly that! In addition we have a growing reseller network so you should have a dealer near you very soon.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

The main range of Pilla lenses are made up of a number followed by letters. The numbers relate to the percentage of the available light that is let through the lens. So, a 9.5 CIED is letting in 9.5% of the available light and is the darkest lens in the range. Conversely, A 98 AR is

letting in 98% of the available light and is an almost clear lens.

If considering a three-lens kit, generally speaking you should have a sun (9.5-30), a medium light (40-60), and a low light lens (60-98). Of course we all have differing sensitivity to light and see colours and backgrounds slightly differently so here are some things to consider...

• Environment

Where are you usingthe lens? The desert, the woods, open fields

• Lighting Condition

Full Sun, Medium Light, Low Light, Overcast, at Night, Indoors?

• Activity clay shooting sports, hunting, sport specific.

lens pigment technology that “Shifts” the actual colour of the sight picture through the lens.

WHAT IS THE ICE?

The ICE technology delivers a performance benefit to the lens surface making it very slippery- ence the name “ICE”… this solution does not allow water to properly adhere to the lens surface or oils. This slippery performance reduces fogging on the backside while also making the lens extremely easy to clean repelling oils and water.

EG you have a sun, medium and low light, so a 39CIG could be a great addition to bridge sun and medium light.

The 1 CIBB and 0CI B are the latest purple lenses and are amongst the most popular in the range. They do a similar job to the ‘Neutraliser’ lenses described above but enhance colour vibrancy.

WHAT IS ZEISS PILLA CHROMASHIFT?

Chromashift technology is integrated into every lens Pilla offers in our sport glasses. Chromashift is a

ZEISS Pilla ICE with “IR” coatings also feature colour enhancing abilities to amplify infused colour pigments in the lens making the colour filters more robust. The exclusive and proprietary spectral enhancements in each formulation are tuned to a specific wavelength. A turbo charging effect of our “IR” based platform making colour extremely vivid and also allows for a level of specificity in colour precision. We can pin point colour lift (like our C or C lenses science) and colour fade for example in our neutralizing lens science. The composite of these technical coating solutions accelerates colour lifting performance, reduces fogging, while making the lens very easy to clean.

In addition to these coating solutions on all current ICE “IR” Lenses, Pilla applies the highest performance ZEISS -LA ER Anti-Reflective coating to minimize any distortion created by reflecting light and splintering of light on the lens surfaces.

BREAKING BARRIERS:

INTRODUCING SHOOTING AT THE NATIONAL OUTDOOR EXPO

The landscape of shooting sports in the United Kingdom is undergoing significant changes.

Recent statistics indicate a decline in the number of shotgun certificates issued, highlighting the need for proactive initiatives to revitalise interest and participation in the sport.

In response, we are excited to announce our participation in the National Outdoor Expo, which took place on - arch 0 . ere we aimed to introduce shooting to a wider audience and foster a renewed appreciation for the shooting lifestyle.

CURRENT TRENDS IN SHOOTING SPORTS

Shooting has long been a cornerstone of British countryside traditions, yet participation numbers are declining at an alarming rate. The number of active shotgun certificates in England and Wales is now at its lowest level since records began, with thousands fewer participants compared to a decade ago. These figures are not just statistics but reflect a shift that if left unaddressed could threaten the future of the sport. As older generations retire from shooting and fewer newcomers enter, it becomes even more critical to inspire and engage a new audience.

This is why we are taking action now. By introducing shooting to outdoor enthusiasts who may never have considered it before, we can ensure that our sport continues to thrive for generations to come.

OUR INITIATIVE

In light of these trends, we attended the ational utdoor E po for the first time.

Our mission was to break down barriers and introduce shooting to those who have never tried it before. By engaging with a diverse audience, we want to showcase how accessible, exciting, and rewarding shooting can be.

We are proud to collaborate with Eaton all, who generously supported the initiative by offering the chance to win free have-a-go’ lessons at the e po. This collaboration will allow newcomers to e perience the thrill of the sport first-hand, potentially igniting a lifelong passion.

SUPPORT FROM THE SHOOTING COMMUNITY

This initiative is backed by key figures in the shooting industry and the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). Their support reinforces our shared commitment to preserving the shooting lifestyle and ensuring its future for generations to come.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPANDING REACH

Shooting is a way of life, built on tradition, community, and a deep respect for the countryside. owever, with fewer people taking up the sport, it’s essential that we look beyond our usual circles and introduce it to a broader audience.

By engaging with the wider outdoor community, we can challenge misconceptions, highlight the skill and discipline involved, and celebrate the sense of camaraderie that shooting fosters.

KEEPING SHOOTING ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE

A thriving community is essential to keeping clay shooting accessible for

SOURCES

everyone. Shooting sports, like many other activities, depend on participation volume the more people involved, the easier it is to keep costs manageable.

From an economic standpoint, an increase in participation leads to economies of scale, where fi ed costs such as running shooting grounds, maintaining equipment, and sourcing ammunition can be spread across a larger number of participants. As a result, higher levels of participation can help stabilise or reduce costs, making it easier for newcomers and seasoned shooters to enjoy without financial barriers.

By bringing more people into the sport, we can ensure that clay shooting remains affordable, accessible, and sustainable for generations to come.

ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTRIBUTIONS

Beyond personal enjoyment, shooting sports contribute significantly to Britain’s economy and environmental conservation efforts. Research indicates that shooting generates approximately £ . billion for the economy each year, supporting ,000 full-time jobs. Additionally, shooting plays a crucial role in the habitat management and conservation of . m hectares.

JOIN US IN SECURING THE FUTURE OF SHOOTING

We invite you to support this initiative by simply spreading the word about the joys of clay shooting. By doing so, you help safeguard the future of a sport that connects people, promotes outdoor adventure, and strengthens our rural heritage.

PRODUCT REVIEW

Mark Brown reviews the Harkila Rannoch HWS shooting jacket.

HARKILA RANNOCH

HWS SHOOTING JACKET

RRP from £249.99 harkila.com

Anyone shooting clays all year round will be all too familiar with the issue of how to stay warm during the winter and early Spring months where the sun rarely makes an appearance, and it can feel ever so cold even when shooting. The challenge is that you need warm layers but still have to be able to move and shoot.

Looking like the Michelin man is never going to help anyone’s scores!

So, it’s been great to test the Harkila Rannoch HWS shooting jacket over the winter period and in to spring this year. Harkila are renowned for making high performance clothing primarily for the game shooting market so it’s great to see them extending their product range into the clay side of things.

HWS (Harkila Weather System) is an innovative system designed to provide e ceptional waterproofing and windproofing, making it ideal for unpredictable weather conditions when shooting. The jacket is made from durable, high-performance materials that ensure complete protection against rain and wind. Whether you’re caught in a downpour or dealing with gusty winds on the clay ground, the HWS technology will keep you dry and warm without compromising breathability.

Our sport does not require a great deal of walking generally and that is what makes it so hard to stay warm on really cold days, but the Rannoch jacket features effective insulation that is perfect for cold weather conditions. While the jacket

is lightweight, it offers significant warmth thanks to the smart combination of materials that trap heat while allowing moisture to escape. I have found that wearing the jacket with a few layers’ underneath such as a jumper or thermal top has kept me really warm and most importantly not restricted my shooting at all. It’s here that the design from Harkila does make such a difference. The jacket is designed 100% with the shooter in mind, offering both comfort and unrestricted movement. It features articulated sleeves and a rela ed fit that allows for a full range of motion, perfect for clay shooting. Other features to mention include the microsuede shoulder patches (on left- and

(slightly reminiscent of a wax coating), removable recoil pads, 2-way zip and large cartridge pockets with drain holes for those days when the rain just won’t stop!

I’ve been really impressed with this jacket it offers an impressive combination of comfort and practicality for the clay shot and the weatherproofing technology and robust material mean that this coat will keep you warm and dry for many years to come no matter how

much you use it. My only small moan is that they only produce this coat in Willow Green colour whereas I would personally prefer it in the Dark Navy colour that they offer the Rannoch shooting waistcoat in as I think that is better on the clay ground. The Rannoch jacket retails at £249.99 which is fantastic value for Harkila product and available from their network of stockists nationwide or you can order direct from their website.

Thanks to Jo Knapman for producing this rather handy spreadsheet of county and area shoots – we’re now very much into clay bashing season and this reference is handy for those of us who don’t know what we’re doing or when.

Speaking of JK, she shot a solid 93 in ESK at Brookbank on 16 March, matched by Martin Knapman’s 93 at Eaton Hall the following week. Well done team Knapman!

Other notable achievements include Spencer Chard with an A Class win at Meadowcroft and Steve Gowing’s 92/100 (266/300) in DTL to win C Class at Brookbank. Haydn Coley and Luke Russell (aka Benjamin

Andrew McWhirter and Luke Purkis have also been on form, including taking the top two spots in B Class at the most recent Westfield fi ture. Steve Lovatt won The Cheshire Shield at WMSG, well done Steve, must have been easy. Well done also to Nick Portlock who picked up just a few points at the SW selection shoot with a solid performance, closely followed by Dean Horswell, Ernie Wilkins, Chris Biddlecombe, and Sean Ponting (great course – thanks team Barbury).

A really good-looking chap shot a respectable second place at EJC on 3 April too. For a much more comprehensive overview of scores, please keep an eye on the Gloucestershire County Facebook page.

As I type, the first major sporting discipline is in sight – The English Open SSP at Garlands – I look forward to reporting on Gloucestershire’s performance at what is set to be a great event (I can take the mick, but Mr Lovatt does set superb targets)…

If anyone ever has any achievements or other report-worthy news which I miss, which is likely, please do feel free to send me a message or email anytime.

Happy shooting!

Top scorers in Veterans where Stephen Umney and Bruce Allman on 80/100, followed by Richard Cooke, Alan Bates, Paul Umney, and Paul Bearder on 78/100. In the Ladies Sarah Johnson on 68/100 was the top scorer followed by Jane Colbourne on 64/100 and Paula Sutherhill on 59/100. Top scorer in Juniors/Colts was Vinnie Spencer on 73/100 followed by William Hunt on 65/100 and Jack Price on 53/100. Thanks to Amy & Sam and all the staff at Eaton Hall for hosting this event.

If you have lightening quick reactions and nerves of steel, Olympic Skeet may just be the discipline for you. But the speed of the target and the time delay on target release makes this the most exacting of disciplines and is not for the faint hearted. With only a small number of grounds having this discipline on offer, the opportunity to practice tends to be fairly limited but having tried it a couple of years ago Lincolnshire Skeet shooter, Matthew Robinson, has since shown that he is more than up to the job and has once again taken home the trophy.

This event was also twinned with the East Midlands Olympic Skeet Championship so Matthew picked up both trophies and was joined by fellow Lincolnshire shooter, Keith

But as we all know things can go wrong all too quickly and a poor third round meant it was going to be an uphill struggle to beat last year’s champion, John Winn. John started with two scores of 22, but he didn’t seem to fluctuate like the rest of us, and a further steady couple of 20’s saw him finish the top scorer once again, beating Norman by just three targets. The Lincolnshire UT trophy has been around since 1994 and is inscribed with the names of some of the best UT shooters in the land, but during the last 21 years John has won this trophy nine times – one of Lincolnshire’s all-time greats.

I thought I'd start this edition of the report with a reminder of last year's competition winners. The county competition season starts in May, just a few short weeks away so this is the last time to give the winners a shout out before they start to defend their titles for 2025.

Supreme Champions – Senior Jo Smith, Ladies Izzy Russell, Veteran Bob Meadows, Junuor Harry Parton. All Round – Senior Joe Tomlin, Ladies Kirsten Vogel, Veteran Stuart Lobley, Junior Luke Glentworth. Sporting – Senior Marco Loxley, Ladies Louise Grice, Veteran Keith Smith, Junior Harry Parton. Sportrap – Senior Jo Smith, Ladies Izzy Russell, Veteran Mick Russell. FITASC – Jo Smith, Louise Grice, Veteran Keith Smith. Skeet – Senior Leon Gill, Ladies Izzy Russell, Veteran Mick Russell, Colts Alfie Faulkner. Skeet Doubles Senior Jo Smith, Ladies Izzy Russell, Veteran Bob Meadows. Olympic Skeet – Andrew Lea, Veteran Bob Meadows, Junior Harry Parton. DTL Chris Borman, Veteran Taff Williams. Single Barrel – Senior Joe Tomlin, Ladies Izzy Russell, Veteran Bob Meadows, Colts Alfie Faulkner. ABT Senior o Smith, Veteran Taff Williams. Double Rise: Senior Dave organ, Veteran Stuart Lobley. Universal Trench – Veteran Tony Clayton.

This year all the county championships have been arranged, we've even got a date for elice thanks to ohn s fi ture list at Rugby and District Trap Club. All the county fi tures have been published on the county website, and they start with FITASC held by our good friends at Sorting Targets. It has been organised to run alongside the Bedfordshire county competition so there should be a good field for the event.

The local Northampton ground has been busy with lots of out of county shooters getting to know the four Skeet layouts this spring. With the English Skeet selection held there on 11 - 12 of April, the British Open Skeet on 10 August, and the English Open Skeet Doubles on 1 September, this seems to be the Skeet year. Hopefully all this practice by shooters from outside the county will encourage everyone within to get some practice in. It may result in an increase the field for the county championship. Last year the Skeet competition attracted 19 people. With the competition carrying the added incentive of possibly winning a 'slab' of 250 cartridges this year hopefully entries will rise. Its never too early to think about Inter-County competitions. Last year we

managed to field teams for each of the disciplines. A huge thank you goes to the team managers for each discipline, Keith Smith, Neil Faulkner, Mick Russell, and Luke Passmore who performed sterling work being the manager for three disciplines. We do however need more Ladies and Veteran shooters to be in the team. Each person who represents the county in these competitions gets a thank you 25 cartridges and a chance to win a £50 thank you prize

For the Sporting Masters at Barrow on 4 May, Ben Thorrold has kindly offered to run a pool shoot in aid of Suffolk CPSA. £1 from every entry will be donated to Suffolk CPSA to boost the bank balance and enable us to support initiatives such as training days and provision of team clothing. Please support this event, you will be helping the branch whilst having fun tackling the targets and maybe even being a prize winner.

CORNWALL

IAN LOBB lobb81@googlemail.com

Here we go – its May and the Cornish clay shooting season is well under the way and as we go to print for the May edition of the Pull Magazine, we have had our first County Championship of the Season, the Cornwall All Round Championship held at Landare SG. Cornwall has a new Overall Champion, Lee Johns, with a great score 96/100. The Vet Champion was Pete Mylam with 91/100, Junior Champion Aiden Scott with a great score of 84/100, our Ladies Champion was Emily Morden-Hawke with a top score of 72/100. We would like to thank the team at Landare SG and our volunteer referees who make these championships possible!

The Cornwall CPSA Committee have written the following letter to the D&C Police Chief Constable, the PCC of the D&C Police and our six Cornish MPs on behalf of our members:

Dear Chief Constable James Vaughan, I am writing to you as secretary to the Cornwall CPSA on behalf of our 343

members. All our members shoot clays targets competitively throughout the year all over the country. We also have some members who represent their country in Home Internationals and some who shoot for GB pathway teams for Olympic disciplines.

Our members are concerned about the large increase in the application fees to renew certificates introduced last month and the time it is taking the force to process firearms applications.

Suffolk Grounds

We are very lucky in Suffolk to have three grounds that regularly hold CPSA registered competitions – Barrow Sporting Clays, Eriswell Lodge and High Lodge. Visitors to these grounds know that they present quality targets and provide excellent facilities for shooters. Suffolk has a reputation for producing top shooters in every category, it also boasts some excellent caterers, be sure to sample their produce when visiting the grounds.

Delays in processing applications interferes with our members ability to compete and adds unnecessary stress to the renewal process. We appreciate that the force manages the highest volume of firearm and shotgun licences in the country, in excess of 40,000 licences, due largely to the rural nature of our community.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience. JENNIE CARTWRIGHT

Jennie.cartwright1968@outlook.com 07775 783637

March has been a busy month with the season starting across lots of disciplines. Here is a rundown of the best results.

At the UK Compak Championships we had strong performances from Richard Faulds 97, Neil Clark 94, and Charlie Faulds 94. Sean Gamblen took High Gun at Gunsite on 9 March with 94.

The first ESP Selection Shoot of the year was held at Southdown in glorious – if slightly chilly – weather and with plenty of Hampshire and IOW shooters making the trip to shoot. Any score with an ‘8’ on the front was worked hard for so well done to Sean Gamblen, Richard Faulds, Dan Bishop, Charlie Faulds, and Tim Connolly.

A High Gun for Richard Faulds at Hangman’s on 23rMarch with a super 97. Anthony Harper, Sean Gamblen, and Doug Vidler were not far behind. And a few days later RF was on form again with High Gun at Barbury with 97. We also had Tim Connolly, Justin Clayton, Emma Ilsley, and Roy Clayton putting in good performances there.

A successful Caesar Guerini Super Sporting Challenge was run at OLSS on

27 and 29 March with Dan Bishop the highest scoring H&IOW shooter on 106. Charlie Faulds took Juniors on 105 with Roger Deacon placing in Vets, and Adrian Samways in B.

At the British Compak Grand Prix at E.J. Churchill’s, Charlie Faulds took silver in Juniors with 143 and Neil Clark shot well in B Class with 140.

At Westfield on 0 arch, Richard was second Overall with 92 and we had a couple of strong performances in A Class from Tim Connolly 85, and Russell Alexander 84.

Over at the Isle of Wight Gun Club there have been three shoots and all different High Guns – Ben Morris, Ollie Hughes, and Darren Wray jointly and Hugh Calloway, great shooting all.

The Faulds’ men popped over to Hungary (as you do!) to shoot in the Hungarian Compak Sporting Grand Prix at Jerring Shooting. Charlie had an amazing result winning Juniors with 188ex200 and Dad wasn’t far off top spot tying for first verall with a 1 , and finishing second by just one clay after a shoot-off. Well done both!

Finally hot off the press our first County Championship of the year was held at Fareham on 5 April. Conditions were challenging, whilst it was warm with a clear blue sky the wind played havoc with the targets. Congratulations to Stuart Cureton who is our H&IOW Champion for 2025. In Veterans it was Pete Thomson and a mother/daughter double in Ladies and Juniors, with Sharon and Charlotte Morris taking the honors. Well shot all and thank you Fareham CTC for hosting.

No County Championships in May but bookings are now open for the Sportrap at OLSS on 12 June, Skeet Doubles at Fareham on 14 June, and the Super Sporting at OLSS on 5 July, so get booked in and support our County Championships.

As always, sorry if I have missed anyone, please do get in touch to tell me of any successes you have had. For those of you that use Facebook please give our Hampshire and IOW CPSA page a follow for weekly round ups of our results.

WILTSHIRE

BARON PHILLIPS

The start of the County Championships coincided with what felt like the fi rst beginnings of Spring. On an almost warm and hazily sunny day Wiltshire shooters shed their winter garb and joined colleagues from Dorset for an excellent Super Sporting layout at Ham Cross run by Will Thatcher and Francina Mattinson.

SOUTH EAST

PETER SAICH

petersaich@hotmail.com

South East Region AGM

The CPSA South East region AGM was held at Bisley Shooting Ground and was attended by around 30 people including CPSA Chief Executive Iain Parker, Operations Manager Clare Alger, and CPSA Chairman John Martin.

Richard Weller gave an informative Secretary’s report including details of our new Clubman category for 2025, to be run concurrently with our South East of England events. To encourage more shooters to enter, Clubman Champion badges will be awarded to the highest scoring C or B Class shooter in all of our

South East of England Championships.

Dominic Cherry presented the accounts for the year. The levies for this year had been up on last year, which was very positive and against the national trend. Well done us!

The South East Region Committee is made up of two delegates from each of the nine Counties, and fficers are elected from these delegates. The Current delegates are:

Berkshire Richard Bodley-Scott and Paul Gendall. Buckinghamshire Paul Thomas and Helen Smith. Essex Jonathan Willis and Glen Defreitas. Greater London Richard Weller and Steve Williams. Hertfordshire Dominic Cherry and Amanda Murray. Kent Kelly Hockey and Jay Huxtable. Oxfordshire Jane Robbins and Kevin Durrant. Surrey Jo WatsonHopkinson and Steve Cole. Sussex Tim Woodhams and Shaun Miller.

Please let us know if this list is not correct and encourage your representatives to join in with our meetings, either in person or on Zoom so that your county can be represented and

The course was a typical Will Thatcher idiosyncratic layout that caught out a few unsuspecting competitors when their concentration fell by the wayside – along with their scores! Having said that it was hugely enjoyable and there were some notable successes among Wiltshire shooters.

Congratulations to Robert Taylor who was County Champion with a score of 92. Robert just pipped Kevin Young who turned in the same score but lost out on count back. Winning the Veterans County Cup was Mark Hall, a Barbury instructor, who shot 85. Other notable scores were produced by Jemma

have your input into fi tures and other initiatives. Our next meeting date is Wednesday 18 June.

At the end of the meeting, Iain Parker gave a very informative round up of ead ffice matters and the CPSA’s direct involvement with helping to shape impending Lead and Licensing legislation. Our thanks to Iain and the other CPSA Staff for attending.

South East Region successes

Congratulations to Kent’s Nathan Hales and Berkshire’s Amber Rutter for winning the respective CPSA Male and Female Shooter of the year awards.

Paul who won C Class with an 81 and was the top Wiltshire Lady shooter. Mention should also be made of ick Cleverley, top of Wilts A Class with 88 and Steve Teversham who led B Class also with 88.

While there was no doubt that the Ham Cross SSP event was hugely successful we were a little disappointed with the number of Wilts participants. On the day only 21 County shooters took advantage of the fine Spring weather to kick start the championship season. We would like to encourage more County shooters not only to attend these events, but also to participate in Inter-County shoots.

There will be opportunities to represent Wiltshire at all levels and classes. To that end Simon Cuthbert, County Committee Chairman, would love to hear from as many Wiltshire shooters as possible who are keen to represent the County. Most of you should have received an email from the committee, via the CPSA, urging you to get in touch with Simon on 07710 253340 or simon@varchannels.com. Do check our Facebook and Instagram pages for more information on our County Championship and Inter-County shoots.

Elsewhere our men and women have been enjoying the sunshine and producing some great scores at grounds across the region. While we always like to mention our AAA and AA Class shooters who consistently produce excellent performances whenever they shoot, it is equally pleasing to see B and C Class members turn in some class-winning cards. Recent clay shooting convert is Veteran Steve Webb, under Josh Brown’s tutelage, who took C Class at E.J. Churchill and a few top three places around the area. Steve is also a Wilts CPSA Committee member and is not lacking in enthusiasm and commitment. While at the recent SW Selection shoot, held at Barbury, our two leading Juniors – Ed Cleverley and Ben Rivers – both shot an 87.

A note for your diaries. On Easter Monday (21 April) the Wiltshire ESP Championship is being held at Ham Cross. Do get in touch with Francina Mattinson on franmattinson@hotmail.com.

9 Mar: Herts ABT County Championship, Nuthampstead

The second of our County Championships was held at Nuthampstead on a glorious day of sunshine, warmth and very little wind. Eight shooters from the county contested the title and it was Andy Dearman who was triumphant scoring 91ex100 to become our Champion for the second year in a row. Our Lady Champion was Susan Monahan scoring 60ex100 in her first attempt at the discipline. Paul Devall, scoring 80ex100, took the Veterans title. There were no Juniors in attendance. We would like to thank Ed, Nicky, the referees, and all the team at Nuthampstead for a brilliant day.

23 Mar: Herts OT County Championship, Nuthampstead

Our third County Championship of the year was held under very different conditions to our ABT Championship. Our OT shooters were met with a grey, misty start and the weather did not improve as the day got colder and windier with rain making an appearance in the afternoon. However, our OT shooters are a hardy bunch and eight of them contested the title. For the second year running Lucas Hyde emerged as our Champion with a magnificent score of e 100. addie Purser, scoring another great score of 91ex100, became our Lady Champion

OXFORDSHIRE

STEPHANIE BLUNDELL sites.cpsa.co.uk/oxfordshire

As you read previously, I have naively taken over from Helen, after her impressive 13 year stint. Thank you, Helen. It’s lovely to be enjoying the spring sunshine and shooting without wearing a coat. I trust everyone’s calendars are suitably booked up with shooting, cartridges stockpiled, and chokes polished. Onto the results, thankfully Oxfordshire shooters have been busy, therefore making my task a little easier:

Westfield arch, Bob Blundell shot a 1. Westfield 1 arch, ulian Freeman was joint igh Gun with .

Wow what a great start to the clay season, we have seen young Finley Bowles blossom in to such an amazing young shooter. Finley’s journey so far for 0 consists of placing second at the Malaga Grand Prix with his personal best score, to then winning the Portugal Grand Prix, to the greatest achievement so far of his shooting journey.

Finley has been picked for the Olympic potential program for Trap along with fellow shooter Jessica Hambrook, who has secured herself a place on the Olympic potential program for Skeet – a great boost before her win of Gold in Ladies at CSC for the first

and Andy Dearman, scoring 73ex100 took the Veterans title. No Juniors entered. Once again Nuthampstead Shooting Ground put on a first-class event and we thank them for hosting all of our trap championships this year.

As I write this in April the weather has changed for the better with blue skies and sun so far. It certainly seems to put people in a better mood and hopefully gets more of you out shooting without fear of getting your gun wet.

England selection shoot

Held at Southdown over the weekend 15-16 March saw over 260 shooters shooting the first of the years England ESP team selection shoots. The weather was extremely kind with blue skies both days and no change in the wind. Billy Baughan emerged as High Gun with 91/100.

County DTL Championship

Paul Wingrove reports: The county 0 Championship season got underway on 5 April at Dartford Clay Shooting Club and saw Sussex shooters competing for County DTL Champion status. Thanks to Kelly and her team for a well-run shoot. The weather was warm, but the wind increased in the afternoon which made for some tricky targets. There was a good turnout of 12 shooters which is an increase on previous years and nice to welcome some of the Dynamic Ladies Shooting Club members shooting a Trap discipline competition for the first time. Also well done to amie Elliot who shot his first ever -straight on his last round. Sussex 2025 Champion was Alasdair Williams, Vets Paul Wingrove, Ladies hariAnn Troup, and unior Tim Fassbender. Mhari-Ann Troup reported on behalf of the DLSC that the conditions were windy making the targets challenging. Ladies first Mhari-Ann Troup, second Lucy Slaughter, third Georgia Coppen.

Compak

Already medals are being won by Sussex shooters. George Digweed won the 2025 Compak Sporting Grand Pri of ungary and eff Di took Gold in the asters category at the British Compak Grand Pri at E. . Churchill SG. Congratulations to you both.

Supreme Championship

As I have mentioned many times in previous articles, points are awarded at all the county championships to shooters depending on their final positions after the shoot. Many a person has been surprised to be awarded a medal not realising that they had amassed points. As the saying

Surrey Single Barrel Junior Champion Isobel Greenhill.

goes – “You’ve got to be in it to win it”. Enter the competitions, we need more entrants especially Ladies, Juniors, and Colts. The two Ladies shooting the DTL competition for the first time are great examples of people getting out there and trying something new. You never know you might enjoy some of the other disciplines and someone has got to win each category! Overall Gold Guy Franklin, Silver John Foy, Bronze Andy Stratford. Ladies Gold Sarah Franklin, Silver Christine Atkinson, Bronze Heather Lynn. Juniors Gold Fletcher Gillingham, Silver Jensen King, Bronze R Daunt. Colt Gold Beau Morgan, Silver Tim Fassbender. Veterans Gold Jeff Dix, Silver Tim Woodhams,, Bronze Derek Welfare.

Have a Go day and team interest form

We extend our congratulations to Dan Parker and Paul Garnsworthy on this exciting new chapter in their shooting careers. They both recently joined the Caesar Guerini supported shooter team, Congratulations and wishing you success for your shooting in 2025.

Finally, from me a HUGE Thank You to everyone that nominated me, as Disabled Shooter of the Year, it is a honour to be nominated but it was very unexpected and
