ENGLISH OPEN ENGLISH SKEET

There was plenty of good news for the future of Skeet at the English Open, as Alex Sayer reports.

Eaton Hall Shooting Ground was all set for this major championship and there were four layouts running on both days, with the ground set to host seven Skeet layouts in the future. As part of this support for Skeet, the ground is even cladding the houses in anticipation of a possible move to steel. Owner Amy Phillimore said: “I’m out here on my phone, making lists and looking at everything from every angle. From the shooter’s point of view, a business point of view. I believe there’s always room for improvement, no matter what you do, and am just so grateful the shooters can see what we are doing. They email, come and tell me, ring up and share their experiences, it’s so rewarding.”

HEALTHY COMPETITION

99: Brett Winstanley and Robert Jones from Lancashire, Alexander Bayley from the Channel Islands, Daniel Napier from Scotland and Allen Warren from Nottinghamshire. The side-by-side category was won by Victor Annan who shot 89.

This year there were 183 competitors across 37 squads and the standard was high. “There’s been far more 100 straights this weekend than usual,” proclaimed Clive Bramley who puts this down to consistent targets, a well-run ground and decent weather conditions. And the straights were spread around the categories, with Tristan Hockey of the Juniors hitting the Holy Grail and Bill Moussalli of the Super Veterans also achieving it and winning this category in the process.

The championship attracted known sporting shots including James Attwood who also shot a hundred straight along with Stuart Smith and Tom Clifford from , making a total of five. Hot on their heels were the seven shooters who shot

Young shot Tristan Hockey was delighted with his 100 straight, but soon realised he needed to do it “all over again” for the shoot-off. Having missed out on the title last year, in another shoot-off, Tristan describes his ultimate victory here (High Gun and Juniors) as “redemption”. He was also proclaimed shooter of the match, which is a new cup awarded by Eaton Hall.

ENGLISH OPEN ENGLISH SPORTING

Report from High Lodge, by James Marchington.

The English Open English Sporting Championship is traditionally the first CPS a or Championship of the clay season each year – and has a history of providing some drama as the top shots ockey for position after the long winter reak. hat was certainly the case at last year s event at Doveridge, now Eaton Hall, where ark Winser swept in right at the end of the final day, to eat James Bradley-Day s score of 11 which had held the lead all through the week.

his year s championship, held at John Bidwell s High odge Shooting round in Suffolk, was shaping up to provide a similar level of drama. Phil ray set the ar high on a scorching hot, sunny day one of the competition, Wednesday 1 th ay, missing ust two clays on the 1 -target course to post a phenomenal score of 11 . ry as they might, none of the 1, or so competitors could match that score through the week.

Closest score to Phil on the first day was Brett Winstanley with 11 e -1 . Day two rought a change in weather, with colder temperatures and a risk wind replacing the sunshine of the first day. op scorer of the day was Sean am len, with 1 9 e -1 .

Day three saw some great scores posted, including 11 e -1 from World Champion Sam reen. In different circumstances a score like that could have shot him

straight to the top of the leaderboard, but today it left him equal second with Brett Winstanley, some way behind Phil’s standout 118. Day four came and went with, once again, no-one able to threaten Phil’s lead, with Scottish shooter Tom Young making the day’s high score of 112.

You might expect that Phil would be eagerly watching the scores from afar to see whether he still led the field. hanks to the CPSA’s shiny new Starlink broadband connection, scores were updated live on the CPSA website by the head office team at the ground. In fact, Phil explained, he had been too busy to keep an eye on developments. “Eley very kindly invited me to a charity sim day at Warter Priory on the Thursday, and I’ve been coaching for the last two days. I had a quick look in the evening, but it doesn’t matter how many times you look at it, if someone’s going to do it, they’re going to do it.” ark Winser was definitely on Phil s mind, however, after his spectacular lastminute win at last year’s championship.

“I saw him on Thursday at the charity shoot,” says Phil, “and I did say if anyone was going to do it, Mark would be the one.”

Mark was among a good few of the big names shooting in the last few squads on the Sunday morning, including Billy Baughan, Richard Faulds and his son Charlie. Any one of them was capable of pulling a winning score out of the bag on the day – and with the English being a first past the post competition, the title was there to be taken right up until the last shot was fired.

As the last squads set off, ground owner John Bidwell, himself a former English Open champion, acknowledged that Phil Gray’s score would be hard to beat. “That was something else,” he said. “I thought 115 would be the top, that’s where we aimed it for, but 118 is incredible really, a brilliant score. That’s going to take some beating. It could still happen, but when that’s on the board you’re half-way there really.”

John has hosted a good few British and English championships over the

They’re a lot of hard work, and as I’m getting older it’s hard to keep up with the young ’uns, but it’s fantastic when you see it all come together.

years, and says he still enjoys doing it: “They’re a lot of hard work, and as I’m getting older it’s hard to keep up with the young ’uns, but it’s fantastic when you see it all come together, and it helps when you get the weather of course. It gives you a feeling of enjoyment.” Certainly the ground was looking at its best, with the clubhouse and its legendary café spick and span, and smart paths and signage around the course which wound its way clockwise past a pond, around the woods and back out beside the clubhouse.

The course, and the targets themselves, attracted plenty of praise

from shooters. John explained that, together with Andy Coppen and the High Lodge team, he had managed to come up with a slightly different course for this year’s competition, using parts of the ground that had not been shot for years. “That’s the hardest thing I think, trying to come up with something different. We try to put on a steady shoot, nothing too hard, so it’s enjoyable for everyone, which is the main thing. I don’t worry about the top boys too much, they look after themselves. It can e difficult to get the alance right, ut I think we have done that. I’ve had some lovely comments about the course.”

With the last few squads shooting round, it gradually became clear that noone was going to match Phil’s score. One by one the targets slipped away – and with 118 to beat it only took a couple of misses to drop out of contention. Phil comments: “John is very clever at setting a shoot where things just leak away from you. Unless you have a good run or have a blinder of a day it’s very easy to keep slipping. He’s very good at it, and it’s what makes it so good.”

With the final scores in, Phil s 11 still stood head and shoulders above the rest. The closest challenger was Martin Myers, shooting an impressive 115 on the last day, with Brett Winstanley’s 113 taking third place overall on countback. Sam Green’s 113 took high gun in AAA, with Tom Young second and Toby Reed third, both on 112 but Tom ahead on countback. Amy Easeman won Ladies with 103 ahead of Lara Dale and Becky Clifton, both on 99. Archie Alexander’s 110 won him not only Juniors but also AA class, while John Porter won Colts and Andy Moon Veterans. Other

notable results include Mark Delf taking Disabled Standing with 103, and Stuart Clarke on 108 taking the Super Veterans High Gun.

Of course an event like this is about much more than the class and category winners. It is a colourful kick-start to the season, a celebration of the sport, and a social gathering for clay enthusiasts

who may not have seen each other for six

The

they finished shooting.

CPSA CEO Iain Parker paid tribute to the sponsors: Browning, Eley Hawk, Swatcom, Pilla, Starkey Outdoor, Le Chameau, Schoffel, and Teague Precision Chokes. All had contributed to the prize fund, and they certainly added to the atmosphere, the ground decorated with colourful ags, banners and trade stands. Browning, provided a gun cleaning station which proved popular with shooters to use at the end

of their round. There were also demo guns of the new Browing 825 available for anyone who fancied giving it a try.

Shooting that score on the first day certainly put the pressure on them.

Eley Hawk continued their programme of giving a slab of 250 cartridges to every competitor in Colts. I spoke to Aaron Christie on the Sunday as he collected 250 Olympic Blues from the Eley Hawk stand. He had travelled from High Wycombe to compete in one of the last few squads and was hoping to achieve a podium place to repay the support of his sponsors, Eley Hawk and Browning. In the event he did them

With the championship s first-pastthe-post format there was no super-final, and shoot-offs were minimal partly due to the distance that competitors would have to travel to defend their places, so we were swiftly on to the prizegiving, held in glorious sunshine, albeit with a stiff breeze, in front of the colourful backdrop of the High Lodge clubhouse decorated with ags and anners, and John Bidwell s right yellow fishing oat standing proudly on its trailer.

Phil Gray was delighted to be crowned 2025 English Open Sporting Champion. “I’m very happy,” he said, sitting on the podium clutching the impressive silver trophy. “Shooting that score on the first day certainly put the pressure on them.” He remembered his two misses clearly: “Stand 7 in the woods, one of the simultaneous pair off the cherry picker, and my first standard off a big pair on stand 9, then a home run after that. 120 would have been nice, but I’m happy with this.”

It was the first time Phil has won this title, although he came close last time the event was at High Lodge. “I was runner-up here three years ago, so it’s a bit of redemption that I’ve now won it, at the place I probably should have done it three years ago – so

I’m very happy to do it this year.” Phil didn’t have time to rest on his laurels –he was immediately heading off to the Czech Republic for the European Fitasc, then the Eurocash, and looking forward to the World Championships coming up at EJ Churchill in July. “A lot to look forward to, and a lot of hard work to keep carrying on with,” he said with a wry smile.

ENGLISH OPEN OLYMPIC SKEET

Report back from the event at the National Clay Shooting Centre.

Agorgeous summer’s day at the National Clay Shooting Centre provided the setting for the annual English Open Olympic Skeet competition. Hugh Westminster

made a strong start, leading the pack on day one with a strong 74/75, while Mitchell Brooker-Smith just edged ahead on day two to lift the English Open High Gun Trophy with a superb 120/125.

A re-energised Emily Hibbs was on top form to lift the Ladies title with an excellent 118/125 while emerging junior athlete, Jessica Hambrook, returned a personal best to take the Junior title, posting a score of 117/125 ahead of a strong squad of Junior Men. Nigel Barnes battled against strong competition to win the Veterans category.

Overall, a great atmosphere, and another well-run competition by the NCSC team.

Trophies were awarded by CPSA National Director and Bisley Operations Manager, Richie Vallance.

DTL DREAMS COME TRUE AT BYWELL

Competitors made the pilgrimage from all over the land to enjoy this celebration of DTL in the Northumberland countryside, as Richard Faulks reports.

The Bywell DTL Weekend is a pilgrimage that many serious trap shooters make every year and is anticipated and enjoyed in equal measure. This year’s event was no different, and as usual very well attended by competitors from all corners of the British Isles; in fact numbers are on the rise year-on-year which is fantastic news for DTL and trap shooting in general. The Northumbrian landscape looked spectacular, but the variable weather did make life interesting from time-to-time. he first day of the four is set purely as a practice day and day two is when the competitions start in earnest. Sponsored Day is the first event and seen y some as a warm-up day, but It’s also part of the Browning Challenge. The highest combined score from each class of shooter over the three competitions wins a Browning 525 gun. So Sponsored Day is a very serious practice day. The High Gun prize on the day went to Richard Greenlaw, runner-up was Marcus Robertson after a shoot-off with Jim Doherty, who took third place. Ladies High Gun was taken by Joanna

THE OLDEST PRIZE

The Dougall Memorial Trophy was the second competition of the trio and is the oldest clay shooting cup. he first date on the trophy is 1896 and it really is beautiful. All DTL shooters dream of having their name on this cup to seal their place in trap shooting history. There were a few scattered showers over the three days, but the wind wasn’t a big problem like it was in 2024. The rain, though a bit uncomfortable, didn’t seem to affect the targets to any degree and it was pot-luck for the contestants if they stayed dry or not.

The blaze targets still showed up well against the Cheviot Hills and sky that make up the background for the layouts.

Daniel Price took High Gun with a fantastic 100/298. There was another shoot-off for runner-up and third places and it was Steven Janes who held his nerve to take runner-up with Darren Armstrong in third. In the Ladies, High Gun went to Georgina Chamberlain after yet another shoot off with Ellie Whitehead. Third went to Joanna Fairclough.

THE ENGLISH OPEN

The weather forecast didn’t look good

Everybody seemed to be in high spirits and there were some very impressive scores being posted.

for the English pen D on the final day. Intermittent heavy rain was due to roll in for mid-morning and into the afternoon and the forecast proved correct, but there were plenty of dry and sunny spells in between. It really was four-seasons-in-one-day and if you didn’t like the weather, all you had to do was wait ten minutes.

Everybody seemed to be in high spirits though and there were some very

impressive scores being posted. The elusive 100/300 hadn’t appeared on the score oard ut there were five 1 99s soon after lunchtime. Ian Mullarkey shot a 1 and said the rain hadn t affected the targets and he had shot through a couple of showers. Corey Doble hadn’t been lucky, and it rained every time he got to the layout, then stopped afterwards.

s the final squad s scores came in, it was going to e a five-way shoot-off for he English Open as nobody had managed to better the 1 99s.

A TEST OF COMPOSURE

As the crowd gathered to watch the shoot-off, there was a buzz of excitement in the air.

Edward rmett, Elis Jones, Jim Doherty, Keith Montgomery and Sam Winterburn were called to take their pegs. It was clear the competition was going to be nerve wracking, ut we were going to find out who could keep their composure best. he first rotation was very close, ut Keith and Sam were eliminated and the remaining three had all scored . Now the pressure was really ramping up. Both Elis and Jim let one target slip

away unscathed, and Edward dropped two targets.

In the end though, it didn’t go to a third round and Elis took the High un with and Jim had one second arrel target to finish on 1 and runner-up. It was fine shooting from all under e treme pressure. adies High un went to Joanna Fairclough who d had a fantastic three days and Juniors went to David Armett. The lucky winners of the Browning Challenge were Daniel Price, Edward rmett, Mark Shaw, Jack Ruane and Dan Kitching.

A FITTING WINNER

Elis Jones has his name on the Dougall Memorial Trophy twice, but this is his first English pen win and after the prizegiving he told me: “I tend to come up to Bywell every year for the English weekend, or any other competitions which they have up here. I’ve been coming for more than ten years now, since I was a junior, so it’s always nice to have a win up here.”

He also said a out the shoot-off “It was a really tough shoot off actually. I battled, I thought, hmm, it’s going to

be hard because everyone’s shooting well. But you know, you’ve got to keep your head down and carry on and grind a good score out. I did miss one on the last peg. I think I went over the top of it slightly, it’s one of them.”

A MECCA FOR DTL

Thanks must go to the Henry family who put on a fantastic and beautifully organised event at Bywell and also to the sponsors; Eley Hawk, SWATCOM, Pilla, Starkey Outdoor and Browning. CPSA chief executive Iain Parker told me: “The DTL weekend – I think it’s going from strength to strength.”

The new format of shooting from Thursday to Saturday seems to be working well and the numbers speak for themselves. Entries are up and the event ran faultlessly. Bywell is the only ground able to host an event like this with 16 available layouts which were developed for the World Championship which it hosted in 2024. It really is the Mecca for DTL and long may it last.

achieved this, four times, but I could find no-one else who has completed the double.

Going into the last day, there was James, Phil Gray, Ben Husthwaite and Andras Szerdahelyi all sharing the lead on 145ex150, with others close on their heels, just one or two targets away.

James won outright on a score of 193ex200, one ahead of Andras Szerdahelyi (HUN), with GB’s Phil Gray in bronze after winning a shoot-off against Bastien Havart (FRA) from 191 and Ben finished equal fifth.

“I never look at scores, the only thing I knew going into the last day was that Phil and I were on the same score. When I finished, people told me what the scores were, but I had to wait for Andras to finish his last layout, but he dropped three targets, which left me the title! It was one of those feelings that took a bit of time to sink in, especially having won the Compak ECH a few weeks ago, hey, there are not many better feelings really!”

“James and I are best mates, and we shoot everything together, we spur each other on, I was just as happy to see him come out on top. At the minute, I believe he is at another level, and I couldn’t be happier to see it.

“I thought the shoot was very good, run well, minimal no birds, Jamey Peckham did a good job with the course, and the Hipodrom Most is an amazing place to stay.”

MEN

The Men’s team were sixth from a massively strong field of twelve teams, so an encouraging result for a team with two new caps.

The team made up some ground and finished seven targets off Italy and seven ahead of France.

WHAT MAKES YOU GET UP AND GO?

Motivation can sometimes be elusive but Anita North speaks to a range of shooters to find out what makes them tick.

We all have our reasons for participating in the wonderful sport of clay shooting. For some it is the social enefits, for others it is a out getting outdoors and for many it’s the challenge to constantly improve. I dug a little deeper and asked a few people across different levels of participation to find out what keeps them coming ack for more.

Charlotte Kerwood –GB Olympian at OT, Commonwealth Gold medallist in Double Trap and now making her mark in English Sporting and Compak.

“My inspiration came from watching athletes at the Olympics achieve the highest level. This motivated me to turn a dream to reality in a sport that I love. My motivation also comes from competing and wanting to etter myself. I love the utter of nerves at the start of a competition. These days I am still motivated by a desire to do well but also love spending time with family and friends.”

Will Canter – competes for GB in Olympic Trap. aking part in ri e shooting at school, I quickly moved on to clay shooting. Originally shooting with a friend, I really en oyed the sport, got competitive and was motivated by a desire to be the best. I found a coach and had lessons with increasing frequency at ford un Company. Significant inspiration and impact on my shooting came from the help, encouragement, coaching and random acts of kindness from David Amos.”

Katie Durrant – loves to shoot a variety of disciplines across Sporting, Trap and Skeet.

“Inspiration comes from my family – seeing how my dad has overcome disability following a serious accident made me

realise you have to work hard to get to where you need to be. No matter how bad things get, you have to rush yourself off and carry on. I am also inspired by other women in clay shooting and seeing how much they en oy the sport. otivation also comes from being a young woman in a male-dominated sport and by kind words from young shooters.”

Dionne Rogers – helice phenomenon with 8 World and 8 European Championship wins. “My motivation is the desire to win and that has not changed over the years. My inspiration in the early days was from trap shooters Bar ara ynch, Peter Croft and Peter Boden. hese days I am inspired y Charlotte Kerwood and her success shooting different disciplines.”

Steph Davey – Sporting shooter turned shooting coach.

“My motivation has always been taking a step forward and challenging myself – that might be improving the use of a certain shooting method or trying a new shooting ground. While I didn’t set out to shoot competitively, I en oy seeing the scorecard and having something to actively work on. At the start I drew inspiration from the strong women I saw on social media and I am constantly inspired by all the women (be they friends or clients) I meet.”

Paul Dancer – clay shooter and Level 2 CPSA Coach.

“My inspiration came from inside – a will to do better and achieve a position to tackle all sporting targets presented. Motivation initially came from a desire to win the gold/silver/bronze badges issued by the CPS at Championships. Now my motivation is to put something back into the sport – to introduce as many people into clay shooting as possible.”

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Shooters from across the country have their say…

ur first County Championship of was English Skeet held on Sunday 18 May at Gloucester Clay Shooting Club. The beautiful weather continued to shine with a cool breeze that liked to play with the odd clay! The ground was looking wonderful, and the team were, as always, wonderful hosts. Lots of good news at Park Farm Shooting Ground this month. We all wish good health to Phil Sanders and hope he is back shooting as soon as possible, especially so he can put their new Olympic Trap layout to good use! Well done to Thomas taking joint second Overall with 95 (Area Silver) and to Fiona taking Area Silver in Ladies with 74. Sadly our Overall score wasn’t in the medals but we really do appreciate everyone putting in the time and effort for their county.

31 May: OT Championship, Beverley and East Yorkshire SG

A Trap shooting extravaganza awaited our shooters this weekend as the Lincolnshire Olympic Trap was followed by the East Midlands Olympic trap and the Lincolnshire DTL the following day. This is a tough discipline but we have some very experienced and competent shooters so although the field was small there were cracking scores from Norman Eaton-Lyons and Dick Cooper but they couldn’t quite catch John Winn whose score of 88 gave him the title once again.

1 Jun: DTL Championship, Beverley and East Yorkshire SG

he first of our ma or championship of 2025, DTL, brought in a good entry of 44 competitors of which 32 were Lincolnshire shooters who were keen not only to win the titles up for grabs but also to qualify for the Lincolnshire DTL team and to rack up those important points for Supreme Champion. It was a high scoring day for many, helped along by a decent weather pattern and some excellent targets put on by Denis and the team at Beverley.

There has always been a rumour that sporting shooters can turn their hand to any discipline. Sporting shooter, Trevor Hawkins, just proved that this is more than just a rumour as he put in a very impressive score of 99/297. This earned him the overall title of Lincolnshire DTL champion but also meant that, as he was not previously classified, he now has a classification.

The chasing pack were not a million miles away. Three people recorded 100 straight with one of those being Thomas Shaw whose 100/296 gave him A class but also gave him the family honours as he beat his dad, Mark who could ‘only’ manage a 99/293. Dale Houghton was pipped to A class by just one second barrel scoring 100/295 with last year’s winner, Paul Smith, just 1 point back on

Sporting Targets hosted the Cambridgeshire FITASC Championship over the weekend of 10-11 May, in conjunction with the East Midlands Championship and some other counties. It was a lovely sunny weekend and the competitors enjoyed some challenging targets. Congratulations to Championship winner – P Gray, Seniors H Dickens, Veterans P Mastroeni, Junior M Allen. There were no Ladies or Colts.

A couple of weeks later, on 24 May, we were back at Sporting Targets for the 2025 Sportrap Championship. It was a bit overcast and a little windy, enough to make it a bit trickier – for some – but at least the rain stayed away. Once again Andrew and his team set up an interesting and challenging competition which was appreciated and enjoyed by those who took part. Congratulations to Championship winner – R Allen, Seniors P Mastroeni, Veterans joint winners R Croft and T Jones, Ladies J Bell, Junior M Allen. Thank you to Andrew, Becky, referees and staff for hosting two successful and enjoyable shoots.

The 2025 Cambridgeshire English Sporting Championship was held at Chalk Farm on Saturday 7 June. On a day that had threatened torrential rain and thunderstorms, apart from a couple

98/294. It will come as no surprise to know that the third 100 straight came from John Winn whose second arrel was working fine to give him 100/289.

John Toombs second place last year behind Marvin Houghton but the position was reversed this year. John put in a superb score of 98/290 beating Marvin by just 1 point to give him both Veterans title and B class.

Jackie Houghton is no stranger to winning, she took the Lincolnshire DTL title for the second consecutive year with a score of 94/273 which also gave her the award for C class.

Our sole junior, George Dilley, just keeps on getting better and better. He might not have any direct competition from other juniors but don’t be fooled into thinking he only wins because he turns up. He is good, as proved by his score of 96/283.

Thanks to all those who so generously donated raf e pri es. he raf e raised 1

of short downpours the day stayed dry if a little breezy. Adam had set up an interesting and varied selection of stands with a few especially challenging targets, but the course was appreciated and enjoyed by those taking part. Congratulations to Championship winner (on countback) – M Bedford who also won AA Class. Senior and Veterans B Dunbavin, Ladies J Bell, Junior H Dickins, Colts S Vella, A Class Peter Simpson, B Class P Garrod, C Class Philip Simpson. Congratulations to all the winners. Thank you to Jo, Paul, Debbie, Adam and all the referees for hosting and running a most enjoyable and successful shoot. Thank you also to all the Cambridgeshire shooters who came to support the latest three county Championship shoots, and we look forward to seeing you at further upcoming occasions.

which goes into the county coffers. Thanks to Denis and the team at Beverley. The event ran pretty smoothly so well done to them.

7 Jun: Sportrap Championship, Orston

An amazing score of 98 gave John Lee the title but it was a lot closer than the score suggested. Only one target away on 97 was Lee Sallabanks and not far behind them was junior High Gun Josh Lee with a very respectable 91.

WILTSHIRE

BARON PHILLIPS

baron@baronphillipsassociates.com sites.cpsa.co.uk/wiltshire

It already feels as though we are more than half-way through the season and yet, at the time of writing, there are still many major competitions yet to be held.

At the county level I can report that almost 30 Wilts shooters have registered their interest in participating in Inter-County shoots that take place later in in the year. So good has been the response that it makes sense to try and create at least two squads to represent the county, with one group comprising AA and A Class shooters while the second would be made up of a mixture from B and C Classes. This would give as many people as possible the experience of shooting in a competitive team environment on grounds they wouldn’t normally get to.

To help create a proper Wiltshire team environment, a formal team captain/ manager will be appointed shortly and it is intended to establish at least one formal coaching/masterclass session ahead of any competitions. So please watch this space as well as Wilts social media accounts for further updates and news, Will Thatcher at Ham Cross shooting ground has kindly offered his facilities for a practice/ coaching session.

A reminder to all county members that the AGM will be held at Barbury SS on Saturday 11 October at 4:00pm. A 100

South East Region successes

There are no Inter-County results to report yet, but one of our Berkshire Junior Ladies has been having tremendous success at Olympic Skeet. Phoebe Bodley-Scott won the BICTSF Olympic Skeet UK Championship held at the National Clay Shooting Centre in May with a British ecord 1 1 1 . Phoe e won her first Senior OSK Medal in Cyprus earlier this year, and recently went to Suhl and won

The CPSA is holding a ‘Champion of Champions’ ESP competition at this year’s Game Fair to be held at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire on Saturday 26 July (the actual Game Fair runs from Friday 25 until Sunday 27 July). Will Thatcher will be representing Wiltshire, so do please support him if you are there are on the Saturday.

Despite the interest shown in representing the county, members should be aware that there are places still available on squads for the forthcoming County Championship Sportrap and FITASC comps being held at Barbury on Saturday 28 June and Thursday 3 July respectively. So far only a handful of county shooters have signed up for either event and we would encourage everyone who enjoys these disciplines to contact Barbury and join a squad.

It was a family affair at the County DTL championships with a father and son double act at the Brookbank hosted event. Alex Spurrell was overall County Champ while dad Mark took the silverware as the County Veterans Champ. Also Tamson Holmes was crowned County Ladies Champ. Elsewhere Paul Atkinson was the County Universal Trench champ. Congratulations to you all.

25 May: Essex UTR Championship, Nuthampstead SG

The Essex Universal Trench Championship was held at Nuthampstead Shooting Ground on Sunday 25 May 2025. The weather forecast indicated a dry day with a westerly wind coming across the ranges from the left, but as soon as shooting commenced, there was a thundery style downpour and the wind picked up speed. The rain did stop eventually, but the wind continued, and the competitors found the targets interesting; to say the least.

Chris Wright emerged the Essex Champion with a score of 84, whilst John Haas took the Super Veterans Trophy with 80. Katie Durrant won the Ladies Trophy with 79 and Mark Burrows took the Veterans Trophy with 69.

All in all a great day and our thanks are once again due to Ed & Nicky Barker for hosting the event on their superb Trap ranges.

Pictures show Essex CPSA Committee member Ian Lockwood presenting the trophies to the winners. It’s worth pointing out that ironically Ian, with an 83 himself, was only one target behind the champion.

Essex Sporting Championships 2025

Held on Sunday 1 June at Barrow Sporting Clays, the weather was great and Barrow had a very good entry with 61 registered Essex shooters attending the county championship. Massive Congratulations to Phil King who shot a 90 and won the

Champion categories to be run concurrently with our South East of England events. To encourage more shooters to enter, Clubman Champion Badges will be awarded to the highest scoring C or B Class shooter in all of our South East of England Championships.

Please send us any news and photos for inclusion on the website and a mention in our monthly Pull report and follow CPS South East Region on Facebook too.

SHOOT WITH MORE

Some shooters are sensitive to the punishing effects of recoil, so we’ve created a multi-fit hydraulic recoil pad for wood stocks that utilizes dampening technology borrowed from the aerospace industry that dramatically reduces recoil: 80% Less Recoil Energy, 35% Less Muzzle Lift, 25% Less Peak Force, 35% Less Rock Back to give youth shooters greater accuracy, less flinching and a better shooting experience. No measuring, no grinding, no hassle.

Fits Stocks: 4-1/2” – 4-3/4”

Thickness / Length of Pull (LOP): 1-3/16”

Weight: 7.5 ounces

FalconStrike mounts quickly and easily to your small shotgun or hunting rifle wooden or synthetic buttstock with only two screws.
