WELCOME

At the time of writing this, we are just about to kick off the World English Sporting Championships at E J Churchills. This eight-day festival of shooting sees some of the very best shots from around the World descend on Buckinghamshire to tackle the multiple events on offer with targets set by the highly regarded Steve Lovatt from The Clay Shooting Company. You can read the full event report in the next issue of

We also recently completed the EO Olympic Trap and the EO ABT which saw Matthew Coward-Holley secure the OT title with an exceptional 123ex125, and 21-year old Oliver Sampson take the ABT High Gun with an equally impressive 192ex200. Great shooting guys and congratulations to all the class and category winners. You can read the event reports on pages 15 and 16 respectively.

Late July also saw the return of the annual celebration of shooting and countryside pursuits, The Game Fair at Ragley Hall and we will report on our Champion of Champions and Colts Challenge in the September issue.

Looking forward to August, we have the BO ESK at Northampton and our final championship of the season is the BO SP ST taking place at aton Hall Shooting Ground in Derbyshire. I’m sure you will have seen or heard about the amazing development of Eaton Hall since the beginning of the year, and we are hugely excited about holding our first major sporting event there.

Wherever you are shooting over the summer, have a great time, don’t forget the sunscreen and shoot straight!”

DYNAMIC LADIES SHOOTING CLUB

As I’m writing this, the weather is hotting up nicely, the shooting grounds are looking beautiful and the number of women enquiring about starting on their shooting journey with Dynamic Ladies Shooting Club continues to increase.

t’s been a fantastic first half of the year for the club, with another big turn out and medals won at the F1 Charity Shoot at Sporting Targets in January, an all-time high turnout for our Tweed Shoot at Surrey Shooting School in March and a big number attending the Wilde & Glorious Ladies Day in April at Holland & Holland. Also, we helped raise £38,000 for SageHouse Dementia Trust.

disciplines, at regional, national and even international level. An incredible testament to hard work and devotion.

I couldn’t be prouder of what we are achieving at DLSC and this year I’m seeing Ladies who joined the club as absolute beginners, now entering competitions in multi

Expanding a club from scratch was always going to be a challenge and whilst I’m thrilled to have members travel to Sussex/Surrey from as far away as North Wales, I’m conscious that growth needs to happen. Plans are afoot, so watch this space... DLSC might soon be at a ground near you!

JACK PYKE ENGLISH SPORTING 2025

This was the 16th ack Pyke nglish Sporting. With this event there are lots of shooting for all levels, the main ack Pyke shoot, pool stand and High Tower Challenge all running for the five days with daily pri es on all. Spot pri es from our sponsors were awarded by cards pulled from the entry.

Becky did all the social media updates with Graham posting some great photos.

Competitors shoot the 120-target course mainly in the Plantation with the final 3 stands on the main ground. The shoot started at the far end of the Plantation with a Teal and incomer pair, then some fast targets on stands 2, 3 and 4 to a pair of rabbits and then a dropper and 70mm teal, onto the ramp for a crosser followed by a long crosser. Plantation caused a few scratching heads.

A pair of loopers on 13 tripped some people up, but stand 14 was the one to master, a pair of monster crossers that were tough and ruined many a card.

High Drive was the signature driven tower at 50 and 120ft and the last stand. nfortunately halfway through the second day a ref had an issue with one of the tower traps who then took it upon himself to change the first target without informing anyone, resulting in the stand being removed from the shoot to ensure that it was fair to everyone – it continued to be shot but only as practice and stand 15 was wiped from everyone’s card.

Vince, Colin, Sam and iley set and built the course with lots of hard work setting everything ready for the big event out on the ground. n the clubhouse Angela, and Lauren worked tirelessly to make the admin run well, with Lewis, Cheryl, Maya, Tracey, oe and Luke producing food and refreshments for everyone,

Special thanks to all of our generous sponsors Simon at SCS Haulage, long term supporter eith from Swatcom, Shellplant and the headline sponsor ack Pyke, without all this support the event would not be as popular as it is, their backing provides the daily pri es, goody bags and weekly winners, vehicles from SCS and Shellpant gave visitors the chance to look at something different and perhaps use their services.

The ack Pyke team were here shooting the course with friends and colleagues on Wednesday and Thursday. t’s great to see Gavin and Glen here enjoying the round and having fun with their guests.

Burger Boulevard were on hand cooking uality burgers Wednesday, Thursday riday when we had Woodado Pi a Saturday Sunday. ce Cream oe was on hand to cheer everyone up with his lovely ice cream. Thank you for providing nourishment and comfort with your wonderful food.

A big Thank ou again to all the sponsors and shooters who came and supported the ack Pyke nglish Sporting 2025, we hope to see you all next year.

A special thanks go to all the team at Sporting Targets who worked really hard to make the event such a success with the shoot running like clockwork, from the publicity, making the goody bags, sorting the flowers, all the referees, the shop, grounds team, clubhouse and reception team. The event only works with all these people and their hard work.

We received many great comments and complements, it was so nice that many shooters enjoyed the shoots and in turn took the time to thank the team.

Thank you all and see you all next year. Andrew Clifton

Eaton Hall Shooting Ground is set to make a statement at this year’s Game Fair, showcasing a new chapter of unparalleled facilities and sporting opportunities. With the grand unveiling of their magnificent new clubhouse and a show-stopping presence planned for the fair, the future of clay shooting at Eaton Hall has never looked brighter.

The buzz around the stand is only surpassed by the excitement surrounding Eaton Hall’s latest development back at their grounds. ENGLISH OPEN ABT

21-22 June 2025

Richard Faulks reports.

The English Open ABT was held at the impressive National Clay Shooting Centre at Bisley on the 21-22 of July. The Saturday saw still but hot and humid weather with the temperature rising into the late twenties. There was a good attendance and some fine shooting on display as you’d expect for an Open. Day two was blustery but comfortably warm. The wind seemed to change direction every five minutes by forty five degrees. One minute it was blowing down range and flattening the targets out and the next it was from left to right. It was layout one where the wind was most inconsistent, but the conditions were the same throughout the day and something that all the competitors had to take in their stride.

The scores for the second day were regularly updated on the clubhouse screen and it was obviously going to be a closely run finish for the High Gun spot. With one more layout to shoot, there were new names appearing at the top of the screen. After the final rotation and the final scores appeared, two 190 ex 200s appeared from Matthew Panter and Adam Gutteridge. Perhaps there was going to be a shoot off for High Gun Soon after though William Gilbert posted a 191 ex 200, and just as everybody thought it was

all over, Oliver Sampson managed a fantastic 192 ex 200 and that sealed the top step and the English Open. Ladies High Gun went to ranchesca Chau with 168 ex 200.

There were three shoot-offs. Third Place EO, Ladies for Runner Up and Super Veteran for Runner Up. The podium shoot off was between Matthew Panter and Adam Gutteridge and Matthew straighted the round to place him third in the English Open. The Ladies Runner Up was won by Janine Travers who beat Sue Bate by one target who took third place.

It had been a fantastically well run event under Oliver ones’ stewardship and thanks go to all of the staff at the NCSC. Thanks must also go to the sponsors ley Hawke, Swatcom and Browning for their support. The final word must go to the English Open Champion Oliver Sampson though. He told me when asked how he felt about his win, “it feels absolutely fantastic” and wanted to thank his sponsor Bowman Traps and Alistair and Ken who coach Oliver on the Talented Athlete Program at Hull niversity. inally and most importantly, he wanted to thank his parents for all of their support!

KEVIN GILL MEMORIAL SHOOT

Abbey makes history at Fauxdegla, at an event which celebrates everything Kevin Gill brought to our sport, camaraderie in competition was the name of the game, as Alex Sayer reports.

Abbey Ling... the first lady ever to win the Memorial Trophy.

The Kevin Gill Memorial Shoot is run over three days and this year it was held at the stunning Fauxdegla Shooting Ground in North Wales. The event incorporates three of Kevin’s favourite disciplines – Olympic Trap, Universal Trench and Automatic Ball Trap.

Ground owners Debbie and Mike Faux were honoured to hold the shoot and really made the most of their four layouts for each of the disciplines. Mike put the excellent atmosphere down to the fact this was not a selection shoot: “It just takes the pressure off, it’s three days shooting with your friends.”

There was a top six OT shoot off on the first day with Abbey Ling taking High Gun and Ladies with 93/100, Cory Doble taking Juniors with 90/100 and Leah Southall winning the Kevin Gill Perpetual trophy.

Day two was UTR and Mark Shaw took the High Gun with 94/100, Leah Southall took the Ladies with 91/100 and Cory Doble and David Sipling retained their crowns in Juniors and Vets

Day three saw the ABT competition and Adam Gutteridge won High Gun with 98/100, Charlotte Kerwood took Ladies with 95/100 and Cory Doble again won his category in his last year as a Junior.

THE GRAND FINALE

Everyone was building up to the ABT super six final. f you win this, you get the cup, and it includes the High Gun from each day and the Vets winner from day one (David Sipling, who won the Kevin Gill Memorial Cup in 2023), the Ladies winner from day two (Leah Southall) and the Super Vet from day three (Ian Woodhouse).

Before the final, all competitors were served curry prepared by Jodi

who has owned the cafe at Fauxdegla since she was 19. Leah Southall was serving and the atmosphere was electric. There had been more than £7,500 up for grabs throughout the weekend in various categories with heavy support from Matt Panter, Caesar Guerini and SWATCOM.

Keith Foote from SWATCOM who shot the challenge said: “Ultimately we compete against ourselves and have fun.” And while that may have been true for the whole event, by the time the super six final came around it was clear everyone meant business. The ground has recently invested £6,000 in the latest Elettronica Progretti live score and acoustics. This combined with the flash targets and scenic background made for a real spectacle in the sunshine. This was a very tense round to say the least, and everyone including Olympic gold medallist and former student of Kevin’s, Nathan Hales, watched in silence. In the end the afternoon saw Kevin’s protege Abbey Ling take overall High Gun – the first lady ever to win his Memorial Trophy.

INTERNATIONAL

Sarah Daly reports.

The were a couple of events for the ISSF disciplines which were a good warm up for the GBR juniors leading up to the European Championships.

EMIR CUP

Sophie Herrmann not only won gold in the Junior Women Skeet, but she shot 57 60 in the final, posting a new British finals record and equalled the World Record; although the World Record will not be recognised by the ISSF as it was not an ISSF event, but such a tremendous result for Sophie.

THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

The European Championship Under 18 was hosted at Malakasa Greece, with approximately 89 shotgun competitors from 19 countries.

Skeet Men Trio: Gold

Oliver Cox, Harry Reveler, Oliver Simons

Trap Men Team: Silver and Trap Men Trio: Bronze Finley Bowles, Lewis Kirk, Joseph Turner

interview post competition: “It’s been a really challenging and difficult day of the competition, it has been so hot and windy, as the day progressed the wind absolutely just threw the targets around... coming away with a medal was absolutely amazing for me... it is my first international medal and it is such a lovely thing to take home.”

The Skeet Junior Men won Gold in the Team Trio: Each athlete shoots three individual rounds. The scores are collated, and they ualified for the Gold medal match against Greece which GBR won after a tightly fought battle.

Each athlete brought their unique strengths to the table, and it was inspiring to witness their dedication and passion for the sport.”

FIVE GOLDS FOR THE FITASC HELICE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Helice 57th European Championship (ECH) was hosted at Le Touquet, France, with approximately 137 competitors from 9 countries, with GB accumulating a seriously impressive medal haul.

to the occasion, achieving a fantastic result to bring home so many medals.”

The Helice targets have propellors, so are even more wind affected than regular clays.

Junior Team: It is six years since a junior team has won and it was tight with GBR finishing one target to the advantage over France.

Senior Team: It was also close for the Senior team: Italy held our Senior team to second by just one target, with Egypt one behind GBR.

Masters & Ladies Teams:

The Masters were a couple of targets off France with the Ladies team held at bay to bronze by Italy.

INDIVIDUAL MEDALS:

Every individual Category was incredibly close, with at least two of the top three placings settled by a shoot off.

Ladies: Dionne Rogers added to her championship collection but had a tough fight all the way, coming through the ranks over three rounds, topping it off with a three way shoot off against Lyne Croquelois (FRA) and Silvia Camiciola (ITA). A really tremendous result for Dionne, her eighth ECH Ladies Champion title, the first one being in 1987, and for information, she also has nine Ladies World Champion titles.

Faye Wills had a good competition, finishing equal fourth.

Dionne Rogers: It’s ten

years since you have won the ladies ECH, so how did it feel finishing on top in the shoot off?: “Incredibly proud and happy with myself, life in the “Old Gal” yet as I’m fond of saying, I’ve a bunch of Silver and Bronze medals but folks and history only remember who won Gold so over the moon to have won this time. It had been a while since winning a European, and it goes to prove that there is no need for age to be a barrier to ambition!”

Master: What a result for GBR, taking the top three spots: Michael Meggison led Andrew Oakey and Jack Sparrowhawk by one target to take gold. Andrew and Jack settled the silver and bron e after a five way shoot off, including Chris Potter. A really cracking match!

Michael Meggison, sponsored by Kelbrook Shooting School: My first international event for GB was 1975, I have made 63 appearances for GB in ifle and Pistol.

“Andrew and Jack shot really well, but I was very pleased to win gold, as Helice is really their game not mine. The big deal for me, was Jessica Swift who I coach, I am so proud of her and her contribution to the junior team gold.”

Veteran: Paul Colley also had a fair old scrap to finish with gold. Having been in the mix throughout, he also finished with a three way shoot off against David Blanc (USA) and Gérard Longelin (FRA)

Paul Colley: “This is my first big win internationally so I was obviously over the moon, but it came as a bit of a shock, I couldn’t see myself in contention, but I hadn’t a clue as to the scores. I think it is best not to look at the scores, just go out there and do what you can do.”

Junior: Charlie Faulds took gold by one target ahead of his nearest rival. However he did have to work hard to make the top spot, being equal sixth at the end of the first round, he moved up to equal second before posting a 10 to round off the event in the lead.

Senior: Didier van Goidsenhoven (BEL) took gold by one target ahead of Andrew Stratford and John Foy who settled the result through another shoot off. Graham Woodman contributes an enormous amount of support to Helice for GB, eg: he posts scores and points from all the selection shoots onto BICTSF website and sends great pictures for the international event reports, so it was good to see him have a real result in the GP France with gold in the Senior category.

Jack Malthouse posted a good performance to be a couple of targets off the podium; and Jessica Swift equipped herself well in her first foray onto the international Helice scene.

Charlie Faulds, sponsored by Caesar Guerini, B&P, Teague chokes, Swatcom, Pilla Sweden/USA, Barepelt and of course mum and dad. This was not only Charlie’s first Helice international event, it was the first time he had ever shot Helice!

Did you enjoy shooting Helice? “Yes, it was good fun, and you had to be good with your concentration, to zone in and out when necessary.”

“Occasionally I have won medals, but I just felt on fire that day, it just came together, enough to win a seven way shoot off, it felt brilliant!”

The Grand Prix France was held previous to the main event to kick off the medal tally:

BRITISH OPEN ENGLISH SPORTING

To be held at Eaton Hall Shooting Ground on 25-30 August.

Our final major Sporting championship of the season sees us head to Derbyshire to aton Hall Shooting Ground. This is a ground with a long history of CPSA championships under the former owners, the Bramley’s, however since the new owners Syd Amy Phillimore took over the ground at the beginning of 2025, the transformation has been nothing short of spectacular We caught up with Amy to get her thoughts on the upcoming event: t’s a pleasure to be hosting the centenary year for the British at aton Hall – we are looking forward to welcoming everyone, showcasing the ground and seeing some ama ing shooting.”

Whilst the original Doveridge clubhouse is still there, the new Clubhouse is something to behold, and the grounds have been opened up to provide a vast array of shooting opportunities for shotgun, rifle and air rifle enthusiasts.

This years championships courses will be set by both Clive Bramley and amie Peckham and no doubt be entertaining and challenging across both SP ST layouts.

Last year’s winner of the SP was ichard aulds MB , winning it for the 5th time in his career after an exciting 6-way super final. Could ichard do back-

to-back British Open titles this year – you wouldn’t bet against him

The Sporting will be its usual 120 target course, shot from Monday 25th August to riday 29th August with the top 4 shooters from each class (AAA,AA,A,B C Class) and the top 2 shooters from each category (Super Veterans, Veterans, Ladies, uniors Colts with the top one from Disabled Standing and Sitting) from each day being invited to compete in the final on Saturday 30th August. The scores will be reset to ero and a new 75 target course will be shot and the top 6 shooters from the final will then be invited to a six-person Super inal, with their scores from the 75-target final carrying through to compete for the Overall High Gun and British Open Champion 2025.

The British Open Sportrap runs concurrently from Monday to riday with 100 targets being shot over four 25-target layouts. The Sportrap is first past the post and only shoot-offs for any ties will take place. Last year ick Hendrick took the title after a tense shoot-off with Billy Baughan, and with aton Hall being ick’s local ground, who knows, he could very well do the double

We are delighted to welcome back our headline sponsors Browning, ley, Swatcom, Sch ffel, Le Chameau, Starkey Outdoor Pilla with support from Teague Precision Chokes and also welcome a new headline sponsor for the British Open Sportrap with oli Shotguns.

Outdoor

As per our other major championships this year, if you are in the top three or a category winner and eligible for sponsored pri es, you must be in attendance at the pri e giving in order to claim them, otherwise they will be forfeited

We look forward to welcoming you to aton Hall for the finale of the 2025 championship season ”

MY SHOOTING MOMENTS

Winning the English Open Sporting Juniors and the AA class at High Lodge in Suffolk – I’ve had wins at a local level and been placed in national competitions, but I was really thrilled to win a championship.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?

I’m really looking forward to working in Australia for a few months. I grew up on the family arable farm in Norfolk and I want to experience working on a big farm in Australia this autumn. I hope to get a bit of game shooting in before I go and it would be great to take part in a bit of Clay Shooting in Aus while I’m there.

SPONSORS AND SUPPORT TEAM

TIPS FOR YOUNG SHOTS

Always focus on the next clay –don’t get distracted by the one you just missed!

Accept that you will have good days and bad days.

Remember, you started Clay Shooting for enjoyment, so make sure you’re having fun while doing it.

I’m in the Eley Hawk Shooting Team which is a real help and I’ve had a couple of offers since winning the English Open Sporting Juniors but I want to make sure that I accept the right sponsorship for me.

We’re a shooting family, I grew up around both Clay and Game shooting so I get a lot of family support and encouragement. I can drive now but before I passed my test, Mum and Dad drove me around the country to shooting fixtures whilst my grandad has always been on-hand for advice on gun fit and techni ue.

I’ve had a number of lessons over the years but more recently I’ve just been trying out what works for me and I try to keep consistent.

GUN, CHOKES AND CARTRIDGES

shoot a Pera i HP 12G with and fixed chokes and ley V P ederations. The fact that my guns is fixed choke surprises a lot of people as many like to change their chokes on each stand. I prefer to trust in my gun and cartridge combination, sometimes changing the shot size for certain targets. This strategy really works for me and keeps me focussed on shooting the clays rather than worrying about changing chokes.

EQUIPMENT

Don’t worry about what other people think, stick with what works for you and persevere –good shooting doesn’t happen overnight.

If you have a particular target that’s challenging you, have a session with an instructor to help sort it out and correct bad habits.

My Perazzi 12G HPX 33” barrels. My grandad, John Jeffries, designed and imported the HPX range of Perazzi’s and I am very lucky to have the opportunity to shoot one of his guns. I use Eley VIP Federation cartridges and together this makes for a very hard hitting combination. I’ve been pretty lucky and not had any notable e uipment challenges although did struggle to find a skeet vest that didn’t drown me when I was younger!

SEAL’S COVE

We spoke to Phil Moss, the Shooting Ground Manager, whose passion for the sport and wealth of experience are helping to shape this exciting new chapter for Seal’s Cove.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the North Sea, Seal’s Cove Shooting Ground, just five miles from Aberdeen, has

been a familiar name in the local shooting community for decades. In October 2024, it became part of the . . Churchill Group, bringing a wave of new investment, fresh facilities, and a commitment to offering one of the best clay shooting experiences in Scotland.

Phil Moss, the Shooting Ground Manager, whose passion for the sport and wealth of experience are

helping to shape this exciting new chapter for Seal’s Cove.

QHow did you get into shooting and the industry?

I’ve been involved in shooting for more than 40 years. Over that time, ’ve run a number of grounds before joining . . Churchill to take on the running of Seal’s Cove. Shooting has been a lifelong passion of

mine – it’s something I’ve never been far from.

Q When did the ground open, and what makes it special?

The ground first opened back in the 1980s and was purchased by . . Churchill in October 2024. We’re perched on a clifftop just five miles from Aberdeen city centre, which gives us incredible views over the orth Sea. The layout and location make for a variety of challenging targets that are just as enjoyable for complete beginners as they are for experienced shots.

Q What disciplines, facilities, and events do you offer? We’ve got over 50 traps across the ground, offering Sporting, Sportrap Compak, TASC, plus a newly relocated Skeet layout. We also have a Simulated Game flush area, training stands, and an air rifle range.

We’ve recently refurbished the club house, which is now available for private hire and corporate events. t’s a welcoming spot for guests to relax before or after shooting. The reception area includes a gun shop, a range of country clothing and accessories, and a lounge area – all managed by Lisa Ludford, who looks after everything front-of-house.”

Q Have you won any awards or accreditations over the years?

As part of the wider . . Churchill group, which was proud to be named CPSA Shooting Ground of the ear in 2024, we’re continuing to uphold those high standards here at Seal’s Cove. On a personal note, was a finalist for Shooting Ground of the ear back in 2014, and more recently, was honoured to be named runner-up for Course Setter of the ear in 2025.

As part of the wider E.J. Churchill group... we’re continuing to uphold those high standards.

Q How has the ground developed over the years?

Since the purchase in October 2024, we’ve seen a big development programme. We’ve added new pathways, new shooting stands, expanded car parking, and created a new retail and reception area. t’s made a big difference to the overall experience for visitors.

Q What’s the clay shooting scene like in your area?

There’s a really good mix of shooters in this part

of Scotland. Since taking over, we’ve seen a steady stream of new faces and returning customers, which has been great to see. We welcome everyone, whether they’re experienced shots or completely new to the sport.

Q Your three top tips for shooting well here?

Pay attention to the backdrop – the sea and sky can really affect how you see the target. Watch the topography –the natural lay of the land can throw you off if you’re not paying attention. Read the location – the wind and terrain play a big part in how the targets fly.

Q Have you got any events planned for 2025?

es, we’re planning to launch The Seal’s Cove Sporting Challenge, which will be our first major sporting competition since the takeover.

Q Is there anything else people should know about the ground?

The ground is easy to get to – just five minutes from the A90, the main road between Dundee and Aberdeen, and only 20 minutes from Aberdeen Airport and the Port. Whether you’re local or visiting from further away, it’s a very accessible spot for a day’s shooting.

– CPSA SPONSORS TEAGUE –

WHY SHOTGUN MAINTENANCE IS VITAL

Ivan Reid from Teague Precision Chokes explains how some simple steps in looking after your gun and your chokes can save you a headache in the long run.

We have seen a lot of shooters come to us recently with blown chokes and/ or damaged barrels, so it’s a topical subject with an extremely straight-forward solution. In almost every case the pattern is the same, and this applies to all manufacturers of multichoke guns. Typically, the gun has been put to good use very regularly over a prolonged period, but little or no barrel, choke or all-round

gun maintenance has been carried out.

With no maintenance at all and poor choke storage there are a few reasons why the chokes will blow. The leading edge of the choke is the front bit that screws into the barrel up to the safety step and this can get damaged if the choke is stored in a pocket with a load of cartridges or anywhere loose or inappropriate for the job. If that leading edge gets a little nick in it or a ridge, then when the shooter pulls the trigger a piece of shot matter or wadding can get in between the choke and the barrel. This can cause the barrel to bulge or, in extreme circumstances, rip or split in the choking area. So, make sure you store your chokes properly in a bespoke container and not in your pocket or your cartridge bag.

CHECK YOUR CHOKES

If the gun is consistently shot with loose chokes, shot matter can get in between the safety step of the barrel and the choke. This can create a vacuum which sucks the choke inwards on the first shot and then on the second or third trigger pull, shot matter or wadding can hit the leading edge, potentially damaging the barrels and chokes. To avoid this we recommend

regularly tightening the chokes with the key supplied by the manufacturer. With extended chokes, finger tightening is OK if the choke is visible up to the safety step of the barrel.

GREASE MATTERS

Another reason damage can happen is when chokes aren’t regularly cleaned and not inserted with a good waterproof heat resistant grease. We wouldn’t recommend a silicone grease because that acts as a lubricant when the barrels get hot.

Discover the full collection at teaguechokes .com

To ensure your chokes remain in good condition, spend time cleaning the barrels with a good bore cleaner. Clean the barrels with the chokes in it first. When the barrels are clean take the chokes out and use a phosphorus bronze brush to clean the threads and spray them with maintenance oil. Also, make sure you regularly clean around the safety step in the barrel. Once you have cleaned the chokes properly put them back in with the waterproof heat resistant grease up to the safety step and you are ready to go.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER

Get yourself a good choke storage box that doesn’t compress the choke. The leading edge of the choke

must remain truly round so check for any signs of ovality. Check with the naked eye or you can use the tapered Teague key to check the roundness. Also, do not use your gun without chokes installed as the shot can damage the threading. We have a safety leaflet which goes out with every after-market choke we sell and every shotgun we modify with our thin wall choking system. It’s also important to read the manufacturer’s literature on your new gun, because there can be differences in the way the choking system fits in different makes.

THE STAMP OF APPROVAL

The name Teague is synonymous in the shooting world with the thin wall multi-choking system, and every single gun we multi-choke we send to the Birmingham proof house for them to inspect and reproof and stamp the barrels with the date of inspection. That’s how we know our work is approved, but basic maintenance of your gun and your chokes needs to be undertaken regularly to ensure you don’t end up with an expensive headache in terms of chokes which need replacing or a gun that needs repairs.

THE ART OF CONTROLLED CHAOS

Drennan Kenderdine takes a closer look at one of the more unusual disciplines and suggests some appropriate shells for the job.

Helice, often called ZZ, is one of the most exhilarating and unpredictable shotgun disciplines in the world. Designed as a sporting alternative to live pigeon shooting, it puts a shooter’s instinct, reflexes and grit to the test. At the heart of the game lies a unique target: a plastic rotor with two orange winged blades and a white centre cap known as the witness. Once launched, it twists and veers with wild unpredictability. The aim? Strike the target with enough force to separate the witness and ensure it lands inside a scoring ring.

HOW IT WORKS

A Helice layout includes five rotating traps that release targets at random. When a shooter calls, an electronic system triggers one trap without warning. The rotor spins rapidly, flinging the target into the air with an erratic, helicopter-like motion. Two shots are allowed per target

Scoring only counts if the white centre (the witness) separates and lands inside the semi-circular scoring ring. Targets that bounce, drift wide, or remain intact are misses with no exceptions.

Unlike sporting or trap, there’s no pre-shot choreography here. It’s eyes-up, gun-ready, and swing-with-conviction. In Helice, the shooter who thrives is the one who’s ready to react, not predict. I’ve seen elite sporting shooters walk away shell-shocked from Helice layouts. It’s not for the faint-hearted but once you’re hooked, there’s no going back. With more rings appearing across the UK, more shooters are discovering why this is one of the most challenging and satisfying disciplines around.

As a Coronation Cup winner and British Helice Champion, I’ve spent countless rounds testing what works, and I also have trusted feedback from elite shooters, including Olympic Champion Nathan Hales.

Compared to the buffet of options in sporting clays, Helice offers a narrower menu. A 21g load may be trending in other disciplines, but in Helice it’s like throwing rice at a window. It’s not going to break anything. You’ll need the top end of your ammo locker: high velocity, heavy shot, and pinpoint patterns.

Many top competitors vary loads between their first and second shot but I’ve always favoured 7s in both barrels – balanced, effective, and reliable across conditions. Shot sizes 6.5 to 7 offer the best mix of pattern density and pellet energy, especially given the UK’s 28g limit compared to 32g loads used abroad.

LYALVALE EXPRESS

The Supreme 28g is renowned for its excellence and is used by champions like Richard Faulds. With a black case and 25mm brass-coloured ferrule, it’s as striking in appearance as it is in performance. Loaded with 28g of Super Tempered Shot (available in sizes 6.5, 7, 7.5, and 8), I personally recommend 6.5 and 7s for Helice. Powered by Vectan D20 powder, it delivers a blistering 1475 fps.

The Super Comp 28g is a 12-gauge cartridge with a strong reputation for consistency and smooth performance. Featuring a 70mm case, 20mm head, and 28g load, it’s available in shot sizes 7, 7.5, and 8. Loaded with tempered lead shot for tight, clean patterns and paired with single-base flake itrocellulose powder, it delivers a velocity of around 1450fps. With both fibre and plastic wad options, it offers versatility across disciplines. Its balance of speed, pattern density, and low recoil makes it a reliable choice for Helice, where fast, accurate breaks are essential.

BASCHIERI & PELLAGRI

The F2 Flash Electrocibles 28g stands out for its refined design, including a nickel-plated 20mm head for added style and durability. It’s powered by F2 powder, proven on the Olympic stage, and paired with precision-selected white shot, graphite-coated and containing 5 per cent antimony in sizes 8-7½. This combination delivers excellent energy transfer and is effective on the Helice targets. The Gordon-style case construction absorbs recoil efficiently.

The ext 28g is a 12-gauge competition cartridge that blends cutting-edge eco-conscious design with top-tier ballistic performance. Featuring a 70mm case, 20mm brass head, it’s available in shot si es 7.5 and 8. t uses the innovative Green Core wad, made from 100 per cent biodegradable material, paired with a pre-cut design for consistent, compact patterns. With a velocity of 1250fps, it delivers smooth recoil and reliable target-breaking power. t proves that eco-responsibility and toptier performance don’t have to be rivals, they can ride the same shot column.

FIOCCHI

antimony lead shot, each pellet is treated with a gold anti-friction coating to reduce barrel drag and maintain pattern integrity. t’s powered by iocchi’s 616 Gold primer, delivering fast, consistent ignition and one of the shortest barrel times on the market. The result is a crisp, high-velocity shot with minimal recoil – ideal for shooters who rely on speed and control.

HULL CARTRIDGE

The Sovereign Parcours 28g is a 12-gauge cartridge engineered for extreme-range target shooting. With a 70mm case, 16mm head, and 28g load, it’s available in shot si es 6.5, 7, 7.5, and 8. WHAT EXACTLY IS A ‘PROHIBITED PERSON’?

Most readers will at some point have attended a clay ground or shoot where you have been asked to sign a declaration confirming you are not a prohibited person, but do you really know what this term means, and if not, can you be certain it does not apply to you?

The CPSA honorary solicitor Laura Saunsbury explains the firearms prohibition rules.

Iwas recently asked to advise a CPSA member who had his shotgun certificate revoked a decade ago when he got into trouble with the police. He was about to reapply for a certificate as he had become a keen competitive shooter. However, he was totally unaware that he was a prohibited person who was forbidden from handling any firearms due to the prison sentence he was given, and consequently that every time he went shooting at his local clay ground he was committing a serious criminal offence!

...there is a process where you can apply for your prohibition to be removed

imprisonment or youth detention for a period of 3 years or more, then you automatically become prohibited from possessing or handling any type of firearm or ammunition for the rest of your life. Where you have been sentenced to at least 3 months in custody but less than 3 years, including a suspended sentence, you will be prohibited from possessing all firearms and ammunition for a period of 5 years from the date of your release. Those who receive a suspended sentence begin their 5 year prohibition on the second day after the passing of the sentence. These rules apply whatever the nature of the offence, and the prohibition also includes possession of low powered air weapons which do not re uire a license, anti ue firearms kept as a curiosity rather than for use, and even blank ammunition.

The police are legally obliged to immediately revoke the shotgun and or firearm certificate of any individual given a prison sentence which results in them becoming a prohibited person. Production of a current valid certificate can therefore be relied upon as good evidence that an individual is not a prohibited person. But what if you are shooting coach, run a clay ground, or are otherwise dealing with members of the public who are not certificate holders

The firearms prohibition rules apply to everyone who receives a prison sentence of at least 3 months, and in some cases for the rest of that person’s life. Surprisingly though, there does not seem to be a reliable or standardised procedure for informing the individual when they are sentenced in court or released from prison that they are subject to a firearms prohibition.

This is not the first time a member in this situation has sought my advice. It struck me there are probably hundreds if not thousands of people who regularly participate in shooting activities without realising they are a prohibited person. If you are the owner/manager of a shooting ground, a shooting instructor or coach, you should be carrying out appropriate checks to ensure that you do not allow prohibited persons to have access to firearms or ammunition.

Section 21 irearms Act 1968 is where you’ll find the details of the prohibition rules. In summary, if you have ever been sentenced to a term of

Where any individual is placed in permanent or temporary possession of any kind of firearms or ammunition without having produced a certificate, it is good practice to re uire them to sign a declaration confirming that they are not a prohibited person. Anyone who does not really know what that term means will probably sign the declaration in ignorance, assuming it does not apply to them. So, rather than simply asking people to sign confirming they are not prohibited, consider including a brief explanation on your declaration form of the prison sentences included in the rules and the length of the corresponding prohibition. Finally, what if a prohibition has ruined a future that you envisaged revolving around a life of shooting All hope is not completely lost. Much like an appeal against revocation of your certificate, there is a process where you can apply to court for your prohibition to be removed, although the court and police will normally expect there to be a considerable passage of time from your sentence, and for you to demonstrate that you are a reformed character.

We (Glos shooters) have more experience than anyone in shooting Steve’s targets, so we really have no excuse!

Having reported last month on success for Meghan Ryan in qualifying to shoot for GB Helice Team in France, we follow that up with news of a great international debut with Meghan going into a shoot-off for the Gold and Silver medal positions. Bringing home the Silver medal was a great achievement on her first trip abroad for GB.

Other news of international success follows from the England Team selection shoots and three of our Warwickshire members to be traveling to Northern Ireland to represent England. Congratulations to Calum Jones who will captain the team for 2025 together with Matt Morgan and Alice Marks.

We have had a few County Championship events since our last report. The Olympic Skeet event was won by Toby Etheridge with Paul Fallon taking the veteran category.

The All Round County Championship was won by Dave Rollason also taking the Veteran category. Alice Marks took the Lady and Junior awards.

West Midlands Regional championship and Inter-Counties Helice event brought some success for Warwickshire with our team of Brian Ward, Jonti Spilman, and Ben Dingley taking the silver medals. In the individual Area Championship Brian Ward took gold in the Veteran category, Jonti Spilman silver in the Open, and Meghan Ryan silver in the Ladies.

18 Jun: County FITASC Champs, East of England SG

On what seemed to be the hottest day of the year so far we had four proper old school FITASC layouts, how they used to be and how we believe they should be, enjoyed by everyone.

With the brilliant reputation of East of England SG building in Sporting shooting circles, along with the demanding standards from John Lee, competitors knew this was going to be a demanding, challenging but fair event.

Despite the heat, 51 guns took part, including one competitor from overseas, with competitors from far afield as Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Kent, Essex, and our nearby neighbouring Counties of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, with 26 from Lincolnshire.

Well done to Kallum Burrell Lincolnshire County Champion with a remarkable 76, closely followed by Lee Sallabanks on 74, with Paul Wilkinson and Paul Z on 73 sharing third place. Ladies champion was Amy Shores. If Carlsberg did FITASC shoots, then this was it.

Feedback from the shooters was so positive and complimentary about the shoot, the set-up, targets and ground. John Lee, all the staff and referees at East of England Shooting Ground, take a bow, you have done a fantastic job.

From everyone at Lincolnshire CPSA congratulations to our FITASC Champion and everyone at East of England SG for a great event.

The 2025 Cambridgeshire English Skeet Championship took place at Priory over the very hot and sunny weekend of 28-29 June. Congratulations to Championship P Barnard with 95 (on countback), who also won AA Class, Seniors, Veterans, and A Class (also on 95). A Taylor Ladies, K Moorbey Junior, B Class J Knight, C Class J Edwards. Winner of the Bev Waller Trophy for the second year running, was D Moore (Lincolnshire) who was High Gun after a shoot-off for the day. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all those who came to support the championship. Our thanks go to Natasha, Aaron, John

carded 97 forcing a shoot-off. Keeping up the energy levels on a day that could best be described as “sticky” was something of a challenge, and Martin wilted a bit in the shoot-off making Doug the winner for the second consecutive year. Matthew Robinson, shooting on Saturday, had set the bar high with his score of 95. This was matched on Sunday by Trevor Hawkins and Andy Harvey. Both are AA, with Trevor being classified on the day, but as he had left the ground Andy took the honours for AA. Martin Grimwood A Class. Chris Bone has taken a recent diversion away from Skeet to Sporting but still managed 88 to win B Class, with Steve Bridge taking C Class 86.

Doug has gained a place in the England Skeet squad having secured his place at Eaton Hall with a 100-straight on day 1. Many congratulations to Doug, fantastic achievement.

There was a good entry in the Ladies category with eight ladies chasing the title and Supreme Champion points. The 2024

Congratulations to William Gilbert and Rhys Dixon who both competed at the English Open ABT Championship. The weather made the conditions challenging at times with high temperatures on both days, and very gusty winds with some rain on the Sunday. At the end of day one, William’s score of 97 placed him in joint lead, and Rhys’s score of 91 placed him 17th overall.

and their team and the referees for hosting and running a most enjoyable and successful shoot.

A new date has been arranged for the 2025 Cambridgeshire Helice Championship, and it will now be held on Saturday 30 August at Rugby.

Ladies Supreme Champion, Georgina Barratt, put in an 82 which looked as though it would secure top slot, however Lizzie MacGreggor White and Nicola Mason finished on 83, joining Doug and Martin in the shoot-off. At the end of 25 both were still tied on 20 so we went to sudden-death – pairs from the centre peg.

p first, icola took one out of the high house pair but missed both low house. This relieved the pressure a bit as Lizzie only needed one from each pair which was the final result, giving Li ie the title for the second consecutive year.

Thanks to Aaron and Natasha for a very well run competition. The ground looked immaculate, the referees coped admirably with the sweltering heat. Good job done by all.

A big thank you to everyone who came out and made our latest havea-go night, another fantastic success! The evening raised a brilliant £485 for the Nottinghamshire County CPSA Committee, which goes directly towards funding county trophies, medals, and other vital running costs.

A huge shoutout goes to the committee members who manned the stands, giving their time so newcomers could experience the thrill of clay shooting for the first time. Special thanks to Gerry, Adam, Matt, and Gail for giving up their Friday evening to support the event, and to Andy and Gail for kindly donating an extra £50 to the kitty.

Most importantly, lots of new faces had their first taste of our sport – and judging by the smiles, they loved every minute! Thank you once again to all who helped and participated. Events like this are what keep our shooting community growing.

The battle for High Gun was intense, with Alex Harris and Chris Morris both delivering 97/100 performances. It was Harris who edged ahead on countback to take the title.

The excitement didn’t stop there –Allen Warren and Will Gilbert went headto-head in a shoot-off for third place. Allen clinched it with a solid 96/100 plus a 25-straight in the decider!

Huge congratulations to all the winners and everyone who pushed themselves in tough conditions. And as always, a big thank you to the organisers, ground staff, and supporters who made the day one to remember.

Stuart Cureton was the only H&IOW shooter to venture up to Bywell for the DTL Weekend, he acquitted himself very well with 98/291, 97/285 and 98/290 across the three days.

It was the Blaser Cup at Ian Coleys, well done to ichard aulds for his 144 and first in AA. Sean Gamblen shot well too with a 135. Josh MacDonald, now in B Class as forecast put in a 126 to take fourth… great shooting.

At Gunsite RF continued his good form with 96 to take second in AA and Sean Gamblen chomping at his heels on 94 to take fourth. In A Class we had Ron King in second with 92 and Tim Connolly in third with 91. Well done to Glenn Dryer for his T/O 85 in B Class and Rob Butler and Josh MacDonald for their 80’s to take fourth. And finally en Phillips shot a great 80 to take third in C Class.

Our Sportrap Championship was held at OLSS. From torrential rain to glorious sunshine, we had it all! We had an amazing 47 Hampshire and Isle of Wight shooters turn up, over half the people that shot, thanks so much for supporting.

Richard and the Team (Anthony and Bob) had put on a great course to challenge us all. Layout 1 was tough with a big battue that was a challenge if you started in Peg 1 (like me!) and a long left to right that faded quickly if you didn’t get on with it! Layout 2 looked hard but shot a bit easier than I expected, with a low flat fast left to right pink and a BIG right to left to trip you up. Layout 3 had five targets that you should hit but a couple of the Sim pairs (in particular the ones with rabbits) were easy to miss. Layout 4 was the same… or maybe it’s just me that struggled with Sim pairs today.

Our Veteran’s Champion was Des Sturgess with 85, our Ladies Champion Tanya Faulds with 83, and the H&IOW Sportrap Champion 2025 was Sean Gamblen with 91! Congratulations to all our winners.

Congratulations to Stuart Cureton on his selection to the England DTL team for the Home International and the European Championships. What an achievement! And big congratulations must go to Charlie Faulds on his European Helice Junior Champion title.

Our Skeet Doubles County Championship was held at Fareham where Martyn Fleming took the Senior

Elsewhere we had High Guns for ichard aulds at the Barbury SSP, ennie Cartwright at Shepherds Chine, and Dan Bishop at Westfield.

Many congratulations to our County Champions in the last month, of which there were two – both Trap events.

North Cornwall held our Double Rise and Adrian Jeffries won the County Championship. I had a browse at Adrian's scores, and he seems happy to have a go at any discipline – would be nice to see him try some fast trap. Veteran winner was Gerrald Sweet and the Ladies prize was won by Wendy Allen.

Brook Bank hosted the Single Barrel at the end of the month. The two Martins (Howe and Taylor) tied on 95 so a shoot-off was completed, followed by a second shoot-off which was won by Martin Taylor – excellent shooting from both of them! Martin Howe won the Veterans and Justine Howe took the Ladies title.

WILTSHIRE

BARON PHILLIPS

baron@baronphillipsassociates.com sites.cpsa.co.uk/wiltshire

The temptation this month is to write a profile of Matt Hance who is riding an incredible wave of success – but we won’t

Since his move from Oxfordshire to Wiltshire Matt has become the undisputed leading county shooter. ot only is he enjoying huge success in uropean competitions, but he is firmly making his mark in his newly adopted county.

He has taken the county titles in TASC, Sportrap, and nglish Sporting over the past few weeks. n the former Matt shot a brilliant 96 over a tough course where he was not only the leading Wilts shooter, but also took the High Gun. At the County Sportrap Championships his 95 again secured the County and High Gun titles. arlier in the season, Matt was SP County Champion, making it three in a row Wiltshire titles. While at the recent British Open Compak, held at Barbury, his 96 was only two away from the joint leaders.

Huge congratulations go out to the County’s two leading

uniors – d Cleverley and Ben ivers – both of whom have been awarded their first caps representing GB’s FITASC teams. Ben took part in the uropean Championships held in the C ech epublic in May while d flew out to Cyprus for the World TASC Championships in uly.

lsewhere it was pleasing to note that Wilts stalwart Mark letcher took the High Gun at Gunsite in une with an extremely creditable 97, while Ben ivers was the leading unior on 89 and Chris Orchard took second in C Class with an 84 – a performance he then repeated at Hangman’s Stone with an 80.

Once more we would like to put out a call for all Wiltshire based shooters who want to shoot for the county. f you are interested, please get in touch with Simon Cuthbert, Wilts Committee chairman, via his email: simon varchannels.com. The first nter-County SP competition will be held at Owls Lodge on Saturday 13 September.

Halfway through the year and finally the sun is out. It’s nice to be out shooting in shorts and t-shirt rather than wellies and waterproofs The county shoots continue and by the time you read this the World Championships will have been and gone. More in the next report.

Single barrel

Held at Dartford Shooting Ground on Saturday 5 March saw eight Sussex competitors taking part. Andrew Stratford is the new County champion with 94/100, Veteran is Derek Welfare and Lady is Mhairi-Ann Troup. nfortunately no Juniors or Colts took part.

Helice

up again with 99 294 while current DTL Surrey Champion Jo Watson-Hopkinson hit 96 284 to win the South of ngland Ladies title.

Helice Grand Prix of France

Surrey’s Steve Cole was among 30 GB Shooters who made the trip to Le Touquet in France to compete in the Helice Grand Prix of France. Steve was fourth in Veterans after a shoot-off.

The event also incorporated the European Beretta Championship and the Le Touquet Cup of the Club. Steve came second in the European Championship to take the silver medal. He also narrowly missed out on a medal in the Helice Grand Prix of France where he scored 26 while the top three tied on 27.

In the Le Touquet Cup of the Club, Steve scored one of three straights from an entry of 130 and won another Silver after the sudden-death shoot-off.

Surrey Supreme Championship

Riccardo Verrilli still leads the Supreme Championship with 70 points despite opting out of the Olympic Skeet event. This has given second placed Jo Watson-

a silver medal in the Senior event. In the open event, Andrew Stratford won Senior silver and John Foy won a Senior bronze.

Sporting

The SE Region Inter-Counties Sportrap was held at Southdown on Sunday 29 June. The weather was for once very kind, in fact very hot with hardly any wind. Sussex prevailed but were ultimately unsuccessful in winning. Many thanks to those who were selected and represented the county. A special mention for Felix Greiveson who was representing the county for the first time as a Colt, however it was that man again, resident of Sussex, George Digweed who took top honours with a 100-straight. I think this is his second 100-straight at Sportrap at Southdown. Not only that, he took High Gun at the South East of England Super Sporting with 98/100, held concurrently with the Sportrap. 198/200 –not bad going for a days work!

We all know this is not the cheapest of sports, but neither is golf or sub aqua diving. Whilst we as the committee try to encourage/coerce/convince people that the county competitions are important and valued, we still need more people to

PHIL GRAY

QWhat age did you start shooting and how did you start off?

I was ten years old when I started shooting. It started mainly with pigeons and walked up pheasants. From the minute my dad introduced me to guns I had a massive passion for shooting, therefore it wasn’t long before we got a clay trap and started shooting clays. I started shooting competitions around the age of 12.

QWhat do you enjoy most about the sport?

Shooting has enabled me to travel the world, see some incredible places and meet some amazing people. I feel

exceptionally privileged to have experienced all of this from doing the sport I love. The competitive element to the sport is my driver and ultimately my main motivation.

QFavourite discipline and competition?

It’s hard for me to choose a favourite discipline because at times they all give me as much satisfaction as each other. I shoot English Sporting, FITASC and Compak. If I had to choose one as my ultimate favourite discipline it would be FITASC.

My favourite competition of the clay shooting calendar would have to be Euro Cash, set by Charles Bardou at Sologne Shooting Club.

QIf you could choose three people to shoot with past or present, who would they be and why?

QIf you could time travel, what advice would you give your younger self starting out in the sport? I would tell myself that your hard work and dedication will pay off. To enjoy the thrills of winning but also to enjoy the learning curves from your mistakes. It’s a long but incredible journey to get where you want to be so don’t rush the process. To welcome solid advice from those trusted in this sport. And finally work hard and dream big.

QDo you have any current sponsors?

...hard work and dedication will pay off.

QCan you tell us about your recent success at the English Open Sporting? The English Open Sporting Championship was obviously a great event for myself. After many occasions of getting so close, it was an incredible feeling to finally lift the trophy. I always seem to shoot well at High Lodge with John Bidwell‘s targets, so I was uietly confident before competing in the event. I did not envisage to win this competition in the way I did scoring 118 out of 120. This achievement will be up there with some of my greatest accolade’s in shooting.

This is a very easy question for me to answer. I wouldn’t change the dynamics of my shooting as it is right now. My first two choices would be my partner Catherine Smalley and best mate James Attwood. I’m very fortunate to have a partner like Catherine who is there when I need her but supports me with whatever I need, allowing me to always be at my best. James Attwood is the man that pushes me every step of the way. I believe that we help each other in pushing the boundaries of our shooting abilities. The third person is the easiest choice of them all. My dad. After losing him two years ago I would give anything for one more days shooting with the man who I began this journey with and ignited my passion for shooting in the first place.

I count myself very lucky to have sponsorship from companies that I believe are the best in the business. This allows me to achieve my goals. Perazzi, Eley Hawk, SWATCOM, Starkey Outdoor. I’m very grateful for the equipment that these companies supply me with. There’s no better feeling than 100% trust in your kit.

QWhat is coming up for you in the next 12 months?

My main focus right now is for the World English Sporting at E.J. Churchill’s and onto the World FITASC in Cyprus. We then have the British Open Sporting at Eaton Hall towards the end of the season. After that I will be focussing on my coaching, enjoying some down time away from the clays on some game shooting, before preparing for the 2026 season.
