During March we held our annual CPSA Awards evening at St George’s Park. This was a fantastic opportunity to recognise the achievements of all those nominated, by you the members, for their success in 2024.
On behalf of all at the PS , we congratulate all the nominees, finalists and winners You can read our full report on pages 14-20.
I’d also like to thank our sponsors for supporting the evening, Aimpoint, Beretta/GMK, Browning, Fellows Media, Laporte, Romero Sports & Leisure, Solware, SWATCOM, and Zoli.
We also returned to the NEC in February for the British Shooting Show, and it was great to see so many shooting enthusiasts in one place and to reconnect with industry partners and forge new relationships for the future!
Unlike previous years, our championship season starts in April this year with the English Open Super Sporting at Garlands on the 17-20 April. Mark inser secured the very first nglish Open title in this discipline last year and is back on the Sunday to defend his title, and we wish him and all those competing the best of luck!
We also have the English and British Open All Round at Eaton Hall Shooting Ground on the 26-27 April. I’m sure you will have seen or read about the transformation of the former Doveridge ground since the new owners, Syd and Amy Phillimore, took over in January. It’s great to see the investment in our sport and the development of a major shooting facility in the Midlands for all to enjoy.
In a time when we face many challenges to our sport, it is refreshing to see such a positive approach and we look forward to hosting events there in the future.

Well this years East Midlands AGM brought with it the end of an era, as after 17 years Janet and Paul Stennett stepped down from the committee as Chair and Treasurer.
lthough a very sad occasion, their send off was very special with gifts from the serving committee, organised by Colin Butler, and gifts from PS head office presented by Iain Parker, to celebrate the hard work and commitment both anet and Paul have given to the region.
olin read a very nice thank you letter covering the good and bad from the many years they have worked together and they were presented with a card signed by the serving committee. Congratulations to them both for the dedication they have shown and for the many meetings we have attended together. Working with Paul And Janet has been a privilege and all the Nottinghamshire Committee and me personally, wish them all the best and I am sure we will see them on the range.
The CPSA is delighted to celebrate the success of the Fujairah Mountain Shooting Championship, a unique event made possible by the vision and support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah. A truly spectacular 240 target course set in the mountain park of Fujairah with George Digweed MBE & Phil Gray as shoot ambassadors & target setters for the championship.
We were proud to support this worldclass competition alongside British brand sponsors Eley Hawk Ltd and Promatic Traps, both of whom played a key role in making the event a success.
Credit to the talented course setters James Bradley-Day, and Owain Jones from West-Midlands SG, as well as Tom Betts, who provided invaluable support throughout and delivered an unforgettable range of targets and shooting experience for all the competitors. We also acknowledge the dedication of the many British referees who officiated, including osh

The 688 Performance features a strengthened 680 style receiver which adds 55gr where you need it most, between the hands. Improved recoil management, stability and handling are all optimised. The anti-glare engraving on the top of the action aids your sight picture for all round visual awareness.

The 688 Performance’s black laminated wood stock offers a modern look, consistent weight, and enhanced weather resistance over traditional walnut. This delivers a durable, stylish and superior performance in all conditions.
The 688 Performance’s thicker, ergonomic stock, inspired by the Beretta 694, includes a widened blade, extended pistol grip, and palm swell for comfort and stability. Enhanced checkering and surface area provide an optimal grip for superior control.
Crafted from our unique tri-alloy steel is cold hammer forged and deep drilled. Our engineers cool, hone and polish the barrel for superior ballistic performance. Beretta’s 500-year-old expertise ensures reduced felt recoil and minimises muzzle rise for better second target acquisition. Superb pattern performance is a given.
Team GB’s 2024 Olympic shooting medallists Nathan Hales and Amber Rutter received welldeserved recognition at the annual CPSA Awards, taking the titles Clay Shooter of the Year and Lady Shooter of the Year respectively. The Awards go much deeper than the headlines, of course, and recognise the massive contribution of shooters, volunteers, coaches, ground staff and others at all levels from the grassroots up.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR HEADLINE AND EVENT SPONSORS!
This year, for the 14th event, we returned to the excellent Hilton at St George’s Park, near Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire. As the home of England’s national football teams it is a centre of sporting e cellence, making a fitting venue for shooting to reward achievement and recognise dedication and commitment.
The evening began with CPSA CEO Iain Parker welcoming everyone –around 200 in all – and thanking the sponsors: Browning, Beretta, Fellows Media, Aimpoint, Laporte CPC, Solware, Swatcom, Zoli Shotguns, and Romero Sports & Leisure. Their continued support and generosity make it possible to stage a suitably grand event to celebrate the efforts and achievements
of CPSA members each year. Iain introduced the awards categories, and invited the nominees and sponsors of each category to join him on stage.
A sumptuous dinner was served in the venue s customary slick and efficient manner, before moving on to the main event. Back by popular demand, comedian Bobby Davro hosted the event, and soon had the room howling with laughter, clapping and singing along. Then it was time for the serious business of the evening, announcing the winners of the awards.
There are nine awards in total, and in each case the winner is chosen by CPSA members voting online for their preferred nominee. The system gives the awards a special significance, going beyond a personal achievement with recognition from peers, friends and family. The experience of receiving an award on stage, to riotous applause and cheers, is something that will be remembered forever.
First up was the Volunteer of the Year award, recognising the many individuals who work tirelessly to support and grow the sport at all levels from grassroots to international competition. The categories came thick and fast, with Referee of the Year, Disabled Shooter of the Year, Young Shot of the Year and more, until we came to the big one: the prestigious Clay Shooter of the Year.
All four nominees richly deserved the accolade for their outstanding successes through the year: British Open Sporting champion Richard Faulds, Olympic gold medallist Nathan Hales, British Open Sportrap champion Nick Hendrick, and English Open Sporting and Super Sporting champion Mark Winser. In a year that saw our shooters performing at the highest level at the Olympic Games in Paris, it was fitting that the top award should go to athan ales, whose finals score of 48 ex-50 not only won the Olympic Trap gold medal but also set a new Olympic record.
This year in addition to the usual categories, the CPSA presented a Special Contribution award. CPSA Chairman Dr John Martin presented the award to Mike Williams, paying tribute as he steps down after 36 years of devotion to coaching and training.
With the formal part of the evening concluded, no one was in any rush to leave, and guests stayed on into the small hours to enjoy a drink and chat with friends, and try their luck at the roulette and blackjack tables. During the evening a raf e was held to raise money for the chosen charity, the Head On Foundation, founded by Steve Thompson MBE and dedicated to improve the lives of those affected by brain injury and neurological challenges.
All in all the 2025 Awards were once again a huge success, recognising the achievements and contributions of members at all levels, and celebrating our wonderful and thriving sport.
Nominees: Richard Faulds, Nathan Hales, Nick Hendrick, Mark Winser.
WINNER: NATHAN HALES
It’s an indication of the strength of our sport to have four outstanding athletes nominated for the prestigious title of Clay Shooter of the Year, with many more deserving names that might easily have made it onto the shortlist. Richard Faulds’ record speaks for itself. Now aged 48, Richard has been shooting since he was nine years old. He became a world junior champion at age 13, and competed in five consecutive Olympic Games from 1996 to 2012, making three finals and winning gold in the Sydney 2000 games. He runs a successful shooting ground at Owls Lodge and continues to compete at the highest level, being ranked No.1 in the CPSA averages at English Sporting with 95.49, and winning the British Open Sporting championship in 2024.
Nick Hendrick also had a phenomenal year, starting the season with a win at the Essex Gun Masters, shooting for England at the World Sporting championships, making 100-straight at Compak Sporting, and winning the British Sportrap title at the Swinton Estate at the end of August, where he also came first in class in the British Open Sporting.
Mark Winser, meanwhile, managed to rank No.1 in the CPSA averages at both Sportrap and Super Sporting, and scooped the high gun at both the English Open Sporting championships at Doveridge in May with a tremendous score of 119 ex-120, and the inaugural English Open Super Sporting championships at Barbury in June with 98 ex-100. It was 28-year-old Trap shooter Nathan Hales from Kent, however who took the coveted award, and deservedly so after
his outstanding performance at the Paris Olympics, where he set a new Olympic record of 48 ex-50 to win gold in the Men’s Trap. It is hard to overstate the significance of this sort of success on the world stage it boosts the profile of our sport immeasurably, encourages newcomers as well as those already in shooting, catches the eye of sponsors, and helps build a case for better funding of our national squad.
“It’s very nice to be recognised by the sport and everyone who supports the sport,” said Nathan. “It has been a massive year for me, a very busy one trying to fit time in with a young family as well as get my training and competitions in, and then doing the business in front of my family and sponsors at the Games was really special. It’s like nothing I’ve ever felt really. The only time I’ve felt that emotional was when my little girl Hattie was born. I look forward to trying to replicate it again.”
It’s very nice to be recognised by the sport and everyone who supports the sport.
Nominees: Lucy Earl, Georgia Moule, Amber Rutter.
WINNER: AMBER RUTTER
2024 was quite a year for Amber Rutter, with a whirlwind return to the sport culminating with winning silver at the Paris Olympics just three months after the birth of her son. Her display of composure and sportsmanship over that controversial missed target in the Olympic final was an e ample to all.
Sponsored by
Also nominated for Lady Shooter of the Year were Sporting shooters Lucy Earl and Georgia Moule. Both achieved considerable success in competition last year, securing a raft of titles and medals, but after Amber’s performance on the world stage it was perhaps inevitable that she would receive this year’s award. She comments that balancing motherhood and elite sport isn’t easy, but says she is proud to be paving the way for women in shooting and inspiring the ne t generation.
“It’s just so amazing to be nominated for an award like this, let alone win it, against some amazing women who were also nominated,” she said. “It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey. I got started when I was just ten years old with my grandad, just as a hobby, and I never thought I would end up one day going to the Olympic Games and winning a medal, so it really has been uite the ourney, but it s definitely been a year to remember.
WINNER: EDWARD ARMETT
Nominees: Edward Armett, Benjamin Jordan, John Porter.
deal with Beretta to swap his trusty Silver Pigeon for a 694.

It is always encouraging to see young shooters coming up through the ranks and achieving impressive results, and once again there was no shortage of contenders for Young Shot of the Year this year. Among the nominees was the phenomenon that is John Porter, who had an outstanding 2024 in which he won the Colts category at the English and British Open Sporting championships, and achieved his personal goal of being in the top ten overall in both. He also finished third overall in the Beretta World championships, and clinched a sponsorship
Also nominated was 14-year-old Benjamin Jordan, for whom shooting is a family tradition that he is proud to continue.
Now in AA class he is aiming for AAA, and made a string of wins last year including the Colts Challenge at the Game Fair, and A class at the sse Gun asters.
Winner of this award was Edward Armett, who had another successful year on the DTL circuit, winning a place in the team for the Home International as well as the European and World championships. As well as winning several titles outright, he took the Juniors honours at the Dougall Memorial, and the English and British Open Single Barrel championships. Edward was thrilled with his award: “I feel brilliant. The hard work is paying off, I couldn’t be happier,” he commented.
Nominees: Steve Scott, Max Tarr, Mhairi-Ann Troup.
This award recognises the vital role of coaches in growing the sport through helping individuals to develop and achieve their potential. Previous winner of the award MhairiAnn Troup was once again among the nominees. Over the past twelve months ‘Mars’ has continued to grow her Dynamic Ladies Shooting Club, giving literally hundreds of women the chance to take up shooting. The success of the club has led to the launch of a ‘Dynamic Lads’ spin-off.
Also nominated was 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Steve Scott, who says “It is because I owe so much to shooting and the people who helped me achieve my goals that I wanted to help others on their journeys. This year has been immense as so many of the people I have been lucky to work with have achieved so much, whether it be a personal best, being selected for a team or in the most sublime case becoming Junior World Champion.”
ut it was a arr who scooped the award, the first time it has been given to the same person twice. a runs the Future Shots Academy, which aims to encourage and progress shooting and shooters across the sport. “It’s been si years since started this ourney with shooting and coaching,” he said. “I’ve been able to coach and nurture some fantastic young shots, and as I improve I am able to pass that knowledge down to my youngsters to help them become even better. I am just a stepping stone that allows them to go on and do even more, and we have seen them gain sponsorship and go on to shoot for England and GB. It’s fantastic to see.”
CPSA British Open Celebrates Centurion Year at Eaton Hall.

Q&A
This Q&A has been transcribed from our YouTube Channel, if you would like to watch this interview with Amy please visit Eaton Hall on YouTube.
Question 1 – Are you getting buggies for the sporting? “Yes, we are getting Buggies that can be used all around the ground. We are currently tarmacking all the pathways to the layouts at the moment, and they will be wide enough to get buggies round. They should be available when the new club house opens at the end of June.”
Question 2 – Will there be a spot on site to pattern a shotgun? “Yes, there will, we currently have one already. So, if you pop down to Eaton Hall and speak to the front desk, they will be able to give
you a pattern plate and show you where to do it.”
Question 3 – Do you know what clothing brands you will have in the new clothing shop? “Ooo that’s an exciting one, yes, we do, all will be revealed soon, and the retail shop will be open at the end of June.”
Question 4 – Are you planning on selling Kreighoffs through your gun room? “No, we won’t be selling Kreighoffs unfortunately.”
Question 5 - What age can children shoot? “We recommend from 10 and above, they can come with a fully qualified instructor, we can provide everything that they need so call the front desk and we can get them booked on.”
Question 6 – Can non-licence holders shoot with a licence holder? “Yes, nonlicence holders can shoot on the ground as long as they aren’t a prohibited person. If they shoot with an instructor that’s fine again as long as there not prohibited. And if they are shooting with someone who is a license holder, the license holder is responsible for the person who doesn’t have a license.”
Question 7 – When will the FAC Rifle Range be open? “We’re hoping for this to be open with everything else at the end of June. This is something Syd’s really excited about as he loves his rifle shooting, so expect something special.”
Question 8 – With the high levels of investment going into Eaton Hall, will prices be increased as a result? “No, the prices will be staying the same, clays will be staying the same, were competitive within the area, and cartridges will be staying the same. However, we have to increase them as the trade increases.”
Nominees: Bywell Shooting Ground, Coniston Shooting Ground, High Lodge Leisure, Ian Coley Sporting.
WINNER: IAN COLEY
SPORTING Next up was the Club/ Ground of the Year, with four strong contenders nominated for the award. Bywell is a thriving and well-established ground embarking on its 45th year since it was founded. Now a Premier Plus ground with 17 DTL layouts alone, it hosted the World championships last year. The ground is proud of its
facilities, and always strives to provide the best possible service to shooters.
Coniston Shooting Ground in North Yorkshire offers top-tier facilities for a wide range of disciplines including Sporting, English Skeet, Olympic Skeet, DTL, ABT, UT and simulated game. The ground takes pride in its communitydriven ethos, welcoming novice and experienced shooters alike.
High Lodge Leisure in Suffolk is a familyowned ground offering practice, instruction and competitions, with more than
30 Sporting stands, automated Compak and Sportrap layouts, DTL and Skeet, alongside luxury lodge accommodation and catering. The main clubhouse and hospitality suite are being refurbished, and the ground will be hosting the English Open Sporting Championships 2025.
All credit to Ian Coley Sporting, then, for winning the award against such strong competition. The Gloucestershire ground has had an exceptional year following a significant redevelopment which added a large event venue, brand new cafe and enlarged retail shop. The ground successfully hosted a range of events in 2024, from regular CPSA registered competitions to the Blaser Cup, Coley Classic, and their ever-popular Ladies Sporting competition.
“It’s a very proud moment for us,” said Coley’s managing director Adam romfield. here is a huge amount of teamwork involved. I am really proud of our team and what they have achieved this year and what we will achieve in the future.”
Nominees: Paul Garnsworthy, John Harrison, Ben Woodham.
WINNER: BEN WOODHAM
The Disabled category provides some inspirational stories, such as that of nominee Paul Garnsworthy who has been a paraplegic for 16 years. t took him two years to get a shotgun certificate, and started shooting in 2 2 , with 2 2 as his first full season. earning to shoot in a wheelchair and navigating grounds was daunting, he says, but the kindness and respect from local clubs, and the support of his sponsors, helped immensely. In 18 months he has moved from C to B class, achieved some success in competitions, and represented Devon in two disciplines. “I’m proud to show that disabilities don’t limit dreams,” he says.
Also nominated was John Harrison, who won high gun in the disabled sitting class at both the English Open and British Open Sporting championships; however the award this year went to Ben Woodham, who was grateful for another successful year in which he won the disabled sitting high gun at both the English Open and British Open Skeet championships, marking his fourth consecutive year.
Ben says that his biggest accomplishment last season was his score of 144 ex-150 at the World Skeet Masters. He extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported him through his journey: his mum and dad, Stuart and the team at Eriswell Lodge, as well as his many shooting friends and family.

Volunteers make a vital contribution to the sport in so many ways and at every level, so it is good to see this recognised with the Volunteer of the Year award. Nominees included England DTL Team Manager David Amos, and Surrey CPSA Committee member and secretary Jo WatsonHopkinson, who is a familiar face refereeing at NCSC. The award this year went to Julia Havill, who after achieving her goal of representing her county and country felt it was time to

give something back. She has done that in spades, taking referee courses so she could volunteer on a regular basis at Nottingham & District Gun Club, helping out at juniors’ days and have-a-go nights, taking on the role of England Skeet Team Manager and becoming renowned for her splendid cakes.
“It’s a really nice surprise because it’s voted by the people that you play with and referee every week,” said Julia. “I did think the email was a wind up at first, but then I read through and realised it wasn’t! It’s lovely.”
Nominees: Josh Billington, Phil Moss, Keith Roe.
WINNER: JOSH BILLINGTON
Winner of the Course Setter of the Year award was Josh Billington, ground manager at the Ian Coley gun shop and shooting school in Gloucestershire. Josh has worked in the shooting industry all his life and has a keen interest in all outdoor pursuits, competing in a variety of Sporting events. The 2024 season at Coley’s began for him with the Blaser Cup, then the Coley Classic which was fully subscribed and brought plenty of great feedback from shooters saying it was a fun and challenging course. The ground has also established monthly FITASC and English Sporting registered competitions which have a strong following.
Also nominated in this category were Phil Moss from Seals Cove Shooting Ground, and veteran coursesetter Keith Roe who has set courses for any number of CPSA regional and county championships as well as England and GB team selection shoots and championships.
Josh was delighted to receive the award. “It’s very pleasing, and it’s nice to have all the team behind me,” he said as his colleagues from Coley’s heckled him goodnaturedly. “I try to set targets that I would like to shoot myself, and hopefully everyone enjoys them.” His excitement wasn’t over, as he would shortly discover that his ground had won another award.
Nominees: Josh Foot, Lorna Glover, John Rogers.
WINNER: LORNA GLOVER

Next up was the Referee of the Year, and in contention was Josh Foot, who was chief referee for both the English and the British Open English Sporting championships last year. Also nominated was John Rogers, who was relief referee at both those events, and has been a referee since 2010. The people’s choice this year, however, was Lorna Glover, who devoted no fewer than 58 days to refereeing last year.
Lorna comments that she loves a rule and is happy enforcing them without fear or favour – always with a little sass and a cheeky smile! After qualifying as a referee in 2017, she progressed to major events and considers officiating at the 2 2 orld hampionships to be her career highlight. “The shooters aren’t always pleased when we take a target off them that they think they’ve hit, but it’s amazing to be recognised like this for what we do in the wind and the rain and snow,” she said. “I go all over, and I am really grateful to the grounds that ask us to come and referee week after week.”
I’ve been running CPSA courses for a good many years now, and I’ve loved every minute of it.
WINNER: MIKE WILLIAMS
This year in addition to the usual categories, the PS presented a Special ontribution award. This is not made every year, only when the PS directors and staff feel that someone has made such a contribution to the sport and to the association that their efforts cannot go unrecognised. PS chairman r ohn artin presented the award, saying that over the years ike had earned a very special place within the PS raining cademy. ike was delighted. “I’m over the moon,” he said. “It’s just amazing, I never expected this at all. I’ve been running PS courses for a good many years now, and I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s a wonderful sport.”
In unpleasant winter conditions the Compak English Open saw a series of tricky combinations and a youthful new name on the trophy, as Richard Faulks reports.
The BICTSF Compak Sporting English Open was held at EJ Churchill’s impressive shooting ground in Buckinghamshire in February and the weather was not kind. It was bitterly cold and drizzled for much of the day, but mercifully the wind was gentle, and the contestants were shooting from covered stands on all the four layouts. Despite the conditions, spirits remained high and there was some fine shooting from some of the usual suspects and a few surprise scores too.
The course had been set by internationally renowned James Peckham and he did a fine job. He told me “I like to beat people in combinations, not actual target difficulty, and taking on angles and getting them out of position. It’s just different speeds and getting them out of position with the gun”. But he also wants to get people hitting targets. He certainly achieved his mission with
this layout. Nobody was going to be humiliated, but he had ensured the cream would rise to the top at the end of the day. And it shouldn’t be too easyafter all this was the English Open.
s the final scores started to be posted on the clubhouse screens from the first squads, James Attwood’s 99x100 was looking very impressive and he was two targets up on Henry Arnold. There were plenty of talented shooters still out and some yet to start though. As I watched the squads pass through each of the layouts, it was clear layouts two and three were the ones that were tripping shooters up and would probably decide the competition.
There was a tricky green incoming clay on layout two that was launched from the top of the banking and hit the ground about 15 metres from the line. It was hard to pick up the target as it left the trap arm as it was ying towards the shooters, but then as it started to drop it showed itself as it plummeted towards the ground. It was a very fair target on its own, but as James had told me, as part of a pair it became a whole lot trickier.
I caught up with Chris Childerhouse after his round. He had just posted a 97x100
There was a tricky green incoming clay on layout two that was launched from the top of the banking.
and he said that he was pretty happy with the way he’d shot considering the layout was a bit trickier than usual, plus this was the first mini major of 2025. He would have liked to have one more target but was happy with his score considering that this was his first proper outing with his new Browning 825.
I watched some fantastic shooting in the afternoon, and it was clear it was going to be a very tight competition, as you’d expect. Mark Winser let one rabbit target slip away when it bounced une pectedly and his final score equalled James Attwood’s.
I went to have a chat with Mark when most of the scores were in, as it looked like he’d be the English Open Champion on count back. At this moment he pointed me in the direction of Junior Will Page who had managed to straight the course! So, the competition was finally won by a 2 year old unior who had shot superbly and managed to hold his nerve to the end. A superb effort on a challenging set of targets and combinations.
Amy Easeman took the ladies category with a fine 6 , and she told me “It was a nice selection of targets and a good opener to the season.”
Above: Will Page shooting. Right: Lady shooting the rabbit target Below: Dog sheltering from the rain.
Left: Reloading between targets. Above inset: Green dropping target. Top right: Chris Childerhouse shooting.
The victorious Will Page agreed with Amy about the course. He also told me this was his first ma or championship win, though he had won the Caesar Guerini Challenge in 2024. He had just returned from shooting in Dubai, where he’d finished second in the pool shoot which had covered the cost of his trip.
ill e plained about ompak t s a concentration game. There’s one or two which will catch you out”. He had looked at the scoreboard when he arrived at the shooting ground as he always likes to know the score he’s chasing, which surprised me. The only target he worried about was a looper on the last layout he shot. When he’d shot that he told me the pressure was off. A fantastic result for a 2 year old and a well deserved first title.

Team Manager.
We had a very constructive 2-day DTL master class held at the popular ground at Holmes Chapel run by the urstfield family. Original booked as a one day event turned into a 2 day back to back event by popular demand, especially members from the Staffordshire PS , eager to improve their shooting. ubber stamped by the PS and supported by a host of ompanies, firstly by the ground for supplying the layout and facilities (fine cakes, a hearty hotpot, pies and cakes the clays from Sonia at orsivia, Keith at Swatcom for goodie bags, uality cartridges from ley, ornaghi Gold cartridges from om oung at ontinental Shooting Supplies. e thank all these sponsors who put back money into the sport. he coaching for the two days was conducted by current ngland nternational and well respected Senior PS coach ee ilco son. e feel the format of these master class are perfect each session starting with registration and a short briefing about the format with shooting starting directly after. ee put each s uad through their paces, addressing aspects of including gun fit, gun hold, foot position, target ac uisition and shot routine. Finishing each session with a debrief and uestions.
e had such a lovely group of amazing shooters who all had the one thing in common to take in any knowledge to improve their ability.
ll s uads worked together and supported one another. hen shooters are in a group and declare their known problems very often another member has the same problem and think it s to petty to mention so it helps them. e try to encourage anybody on theses master classes to speak up however small or insignificant it may appear with their shooting. he class was for mainly and shooters although we did have a class shooter who lost his way a little bit recently. is a cracking discipline, it has a marvellous following and still loads of shooters wanting to do well and enter the selection procedure. ll the shooter were pleased with the procedures and went away in good spirits with things to work on. he ne t master class will be on mental preparation in the morning followed by a registered held at everley ast orkshire Shooting Ground later in the year.
he last word has to go to the coach ee ilco son who worked tirelessly for the two days at out and is so conscientious the way he goes about his business. hank you, ee.

Laura Saunsbury, the CPSA’s honorary solicitor and shotgun licensing advisor, examines the recent increase in firearms licensing fees and what the shooting community can expect in return for the higher cost of a certificate.
Most readers will by now be aware that the Government implemented a significant increase in firearms licensing fees with effect from 5th February 2 25. he new fees apply to all applications received from that date onwards. f you submitted a complete application, including the medical certificate from your doctor, before then, and you are still waiting for your application to be processed, you will only be charged the old fee which you paid at the time of submitting your application. For those of you who are not yet familiar with the new fees, brace yourself for what comes ne t.
Firearms licensing fees have not been increased at all for 10 years since 2015.
he fee for the grant of a shotgun certificate has more than doubled from 7 .5 to . owever, the largest proportional increase in all of the firearms licensing fees is for the renewal of a shotgun certificate, which will now cost you 26, more than 2 times the previous fee of . hese revised fees represent a greater percentage increase than in the fees for the grant or renewal of a firearm certificate. cynical view might be that there are a lot more people who hold a shotgun certificate than a firearm certificate, and so this is an easy avenue to generate e tra revenue from increased shotgun licensing fees. For readers who hold or would like both types of certificate, the fee for a coterminous renewal is now 55 (previously 65 , and the fee for coterminous grant is now 2 2 (previously . here has been much talk for a number of years about an increase in firearms licensing fees to enable the police to fully recover the costs of administering firearms licensing. e should also keep in mind that firearms licensing fees have not been increased at all for years since 2 5. e
should therefore not be totally surprised by the new fees, and some rumours circulating before the figures were announced suggested that the increases may be greater.
There is probably a sizeable proportion of the readers of this magazine who would regard the fee increase as reasonable and fair, if you felt confident that this was actually going to lead to significant improvements in the efficiency and service you receive from your local firearms licensing department. nd that is really the unanswered uestion what benefits are the shooting community going to see in return for paying these higher fees?
Some would argue that we should not be re uired to pay more for a better service in advance of actually receiving it. t s a little early to tell, but we can certainly hope that the increased revenue from licensing fees will lead to more efficient firearms licensing departments, with greater numbers of better trained firearms en uiry officers, and also management above them. owever, should sound a note of caution. hile firearms licensing fees are ring fenced by the ome Office to go to the Police, they are not specifically designated to go direct to firearms licensing departments. onse uently, there is nothing to stop hief onstables putting the additional revenue to use elsewhere if there is pressure on their police budgets from other directions. owever, the PS will continue to press the ome Office and the Police at a national level on behalf of members to account for how the increased fees are being spent.
From your perspective as an applicant for the grant or renewal of a certificate, would certainly encourage you when following up on progress with your application to politely en uire with your F O what changes and improvements have been made in your local firearms licensing department following the increase in licensing fees. For e ample, how many e tra staff are there in the department now, and is there a reduced turnaround time for processing applications he Police should be constantly reminded there is a reasonable e pectation from the shooting community that you are entitled to a more efficient service and swifter processing of applications in return for paying higher fees.
We spoke to Amy Phillimore, Owner of Eaton Hall Shooting Ground, following the recent takeover of Doveridge Clay Sports Club.
QHow did you get into shooting/the industry?
A: Syd and I are both from Shooting/Farming backgrounds. Syd has shot from a young age, his passion is game
shooting. Syd taught me to shoot 15 years ago and I haven’t regretted it ever since. I got the bug and haven’t looked back. We have always loved the social side of shooting and have met some incredible friends along the way. Both
being successful in business, we wanted to share our knowledge and our passion. Syd was ready to retire but I had other ideas!
QWhen did you take over the ground, and what makes it special?
A: We took over the ground January 2025 and it has
huge potential – it has been a fantastic ground over the past 26 years, holding some unforgettable events, including the English last year. With over 80 acres in the idyllic Derbyshire countryside, what better place to be! It also over looks my family farm where I grew up.
Q
What disciplines/facilities/ events do you offer?
A: We offer all disciplines in clay shooting and are currently building a large, fully heated air ri e and ri e range, as well as two running boar layouts. We are
also building a 20,000sqft clubhouse which will host some fabulous facilities including a gunroom, gunsmiths, retail shop, café, meeting and training rooms, and corporate facilities all under one roof.
Q Have you won any awards and accreditations ao far?
A: We have only just taken over the ground, have been awarded a CPSA premier plus status.
QHow has the ground developed over the years?
A: I believe the ground has developed over the years –
With over 80 acres in the idyllic Derbyshire countryside, what better place to be!
but certainly since we have taken over in the last few months there has been some huge changes, and continues to be until the end of June 2025.
Q What’s the clay shooting like in your area?
A: We have some great grounds in the area and are luckily enough to be friends with them all, we hope to continue to build relationships with them and work with each other regarding dates for comps etc over the coming years.
Q Have you got any events planned in 2025?
A: We have some exciting events planned and we are holding the centenary year - British Open Sporting and Sportrap in August.
Q Is there anything else you would like to include?
A: Everyone is welcome at Eaton Hall Shooting ground, you don’t need to be a member, and there is plenty for everyone to take part in, beginners or experienced.
My favourite shooting moments have been competing in Fujairah at FMSC, shooting my first straight in nglish sporting last October and winning the nglish Open ompak overall.

I’ll start with the largest and most supported discipline, sporting, which offers the most diverse range of shotgun cartridges for shooters. My selection isn’t to say that other brands and lines don’t deserve mention. Rather, with such a variety available, it’s a testament to the quality and performance that these selections stand out in the vast array of options.

we know they’ll all deliver strong performances. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Charlie Faulds (pictured left), particularly in English Sporting, where he continues to impress. Our athlete Steve Scott has told us to keep an eye on Maddie Russell, whom he coaches, as one to watch this year. After her outstanding 2024 season, which included securing the Junior World Champion title in Olympic Skeet, she’s in a great position for another strong year. With so much talent on display, we’re looking forward to seeing what 2025 holds.
WHICH CPSA EVENTS ARE YOU SUPPORTING WITH A PHYSICAL PRESENCE IN 2025?
That’s a tough one, as every member of the SWATCOM Network is incredibly talented! Some of the biggest achievements include three of our athletes qualifying for the Olympics, with Nathan Hales, not only winning gold but also setting a new Olympic record. We’ve seen multiple athletes earn selection for national and international competitions across various shooting disciplines. Beyond the major accolades, we recognise and celebrate the personal milestones our Network has achieved, as these are just as important.
WHO ARE THE ONES TO WATCH AND IN WHAT EVENTS IN 2025?
We’re looking forward to seeing all our athletes compete in 2025, and after speaking with many of them at The British Shooting Show, their determination and drive are stronger than ever. It’s set to be an exciting season, and
We’ll be attending multiple events in person to support our athletes, ambassadors and anyone looking to purchase any products. We’re particularly looking forward to the 2025 World English Sporting Clays Championship, as it’s a rare opportunity to potentially meet some of those we support who live outside the UK. If you see us at an event, be sure to stop by and have a chat.
Anita North meets Mhairi-Ann Troup, a coach who has done more than most to spread the word about clay shooting.
Mhairi-Ann Troup is best known as the effervescent leader the Dynamic Ladies Shooting Club (DLSC). At the time of writing she is one of the nominees for the 2025 CPSA Coach of the Year. But she is no newcomer to the award – indeed she won in 2016 and was runner-up in 2023 and 2024. But what’s her story and how did she get into shooting?
STARTING YOUNG
Mhairi-Ann started shooting at the age of eight firstly with air ri es, then progressing to shotguns and clay
shooting. Her father taught her to shoot, and her brother was her guide and support and she told me they have been her greatest in uence in her shooting journey. Before too long she was competing and winning local competitions in Scotland. When she moved to heshire in her 2 s, she continued shooting and represented Cheshire in DTL. Moving to Sussex the passion for her hobby continued and she has represented Sussex in ABT. Her favourite grounds are Surrey Shooting School, Polowood Shooting Ground near Brighton and Cloudside Shooting Ground from her days in heshire.
With a desire to help others enjoy this wonderful sport, she took to coaching (mostly with youngsters) in her free time from her work with Sussex Police and became a CPSA Level 1 Instructor. In 2016 she won CPSA Coach of the Year, something she sees as a highlight in her journey thus far. She is now kept busy balancing instructing five to si days a week with looking after her family.
In September 2020 the DLSC was born, following conversations with women who were desperate to start a new sport/hobby after the restrictions of Covid. With a home base of Southdown
We have such an incredible, diverse group of women... who support each other...
Gun Club, events are held in Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. And since its inception the DLSC has provided many members with a comfortable development pathway.
As a dedicated coach Mhairi-Ann’s forte is introducing new people to the sport, getting them hooked and shooting to a good solid competent level. Her bubbly personality works with beginners and attracting more women into the sport. But her coaching work isn t ust confined to women, she encourages anyone and everyone. ven her local P has benefited from her instruction.
Q&A WITH MHAIRI-ANN TROUP
Aberdeenshire born Mhairi-Ann lives in West Sussex with her partner, Rich, and their four sons. When she gets time she relaxes by getting outdoors for walks in the South Downs, which remind her of her childhood in Aberdeenshire, and she also plays netball and badminton.
Q
What’s your kitbag essential?
I always have a bottle of Irn-Bru in my bag.
Q. Biggest challenge? Changing people’s mindsets and stereotypes to allow the growth of the number of females in the sport.
Q
Q
Biggest learning?
Be patient, patient and more patient!
Biggest support?
Southdown Gun Club have been so, so supportive to me and the DLSC. This is our main base, and my club wouldn’t have got off the ground without them.
Q.
Best thing about the DLSC?
The camaraderie within the group is phenomenal. We have such an incredible, diverse group of women of all ages and abilities who support each other, giving them all the chance to bring out their competitive side.
But don’t just take my word for it. Georgia Coppen told me: “When I joined the DLSC back in 2022, I had no idea how much it would change my life. Not only have I discovered a passion for clay shooting, but I’ve also formed friendships with the most incredible, wholesome group of women who I treasure very much. I am so very grateful to Mhairi-Ann for bringing us all together and for being the best coach and friend. Joining DLSC was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
Sam Hockley said: “One of the best things I have ever done was to take up shooting and join the DLSC. I have a new hobby, new friends, new skills and I love getting outdoors more. Mhairi has taken me from never having shot before, to being a safe and competent shooter and now to being an instructor myself. It really has been such an incredible journey and I’m super excited to meet more likeminded ladies and get out to more shooting grounds.”
her better support club members as the DLSC grows. Meanwhile one of the members, now a CPSA coach, is helping roll out in the South West later this year, while Mhairi-Ann is hard at work looking to countrywide franchises.
Highland Outdoors (supplier of Yildiz shotguns), Keith Foote and the team at SWATCOM, Carl Weller at Eley Hawk, Alix Selby and Andy Deeks. Finally thanks went to her partner Rich, for his support and work with the DLSC behind the scenes.
As to the future Mhairi-Ann told me she has plans to travel further for in-house and external events. In addition she is looking to add to her coaching ualifications as it may help
Mhairi-Ann gave thanks for the unwavering support to everyone at Southdown, Surrey Shooting School, Polowood, CPSA, BASC, Callum at
I am sure we will be seeing the distinctive pink and black kit of the DLSC ladies squad out and about at more and more events. Well done Mhairi-Ann on all the good work helping grow this wonderful sport.

TOM HAMMENTS

Hello Gloucestershire - welcome to my inaugural ramblings. For reasons beyond my understanding, I have been appointed as the person charged with writing this column. Quite the responsibility, I think. So, first things first, thank you to my predecessor Richard Moreing, who has done a sterling job of reporting Gloucestershire’s news in Pull! Magazine for some time now. In the same way that other counties do, I of course intend to report on notable scores, results and achievements from Gloucestershire shooters locally, nationally and internationally. I also intend to report on anyone who shoots an absolute clanger of a score, anyone who disappears without handing their scorecard in (we see you) and basically anything else newsworthy. Please don’t take offence to anything I write, it’s probably just sarcasm, but if you are easily offended, you could perhaps move to another county. Wiltshire seems friendly.
Gloucestershire CPSA held its AGM at Ian Coley’s in February. I was unable to attend, but I didn’t hear of any scraps, so well done all. here s significant change with chair Zoe Pitts stepping down and being replaced by Jenny Young, with Paul Tudge as Vice Chair. Thank you for your service, Zoe – it’s a thankless enough job if you’re into the sport, I imagine it’s even more thankless when you’re not. Chloe Applin remains Secretary, Sean Foley remains Treasurer, and Steve Lovatt remains West Midlands Area Rep. Sam Townsend has stepped down from running the social media pages, thanks for your work Sam, hopefully you’ll now have more time for golf, fishing, or whatever hobby you re into this week. He is replaced by Jo Knapman. We also have team managers as follows: AR Luke Russell. ESK/OSK Paul Tudge. ESP Nick Portlock and Kevin Childs. FITASC Tim James. SSP/STR Nick Portlock and Tim James. Trap Stuart Jones and Steve Gowing. The 2024 achievement award was won by Matt Panter, well done Matt. write this after a sunny day at estfield (2 arch the first time the weather has felt positively spring like. By the time you’re reading this, it’ll hopefully be even more so – everyone is bored of shooting in coats. Today saw a turnout of 185 shooters with Sam Usher and Dean Horswell taking the honours on 96. Tim Shayle shot a solid 87 in A Class and Jenny Young was the second highest placed lady on 82. Other
recent scores include Nick Portlock with 97 at Barbury on 19 February and Ben Hughes with 88 to win A Class at Owls Lodge on 27 February (Ben has a blue tick on Instagram, but he’s still very approachable). At Somerset SG on 28 February, in B and C Class, we saw James Bellamy and Aaron Waltho place with 84 and 74 respectively. By the time you read this, all the 2025 Championships will be in your diaries, including the Worlds which are back in the UK this year. I look forward to seeing what damage Gloucestershire shooters
can do across the disciplines. Other events worth a look are The Double Classic held at Garlands in ay and estfield in September and The Coley Classic and Blaser Cup – information on Coleys website. Lastly, Barbury have a series of Super Sporting shoots on throughout 2025 (April to September) – if you are a Sporting shooter and you haven’t shot Super Sporting, then you really must try it, it’s a great discipline – you can book on the Barbury series by calling or emailing them direct. Happy shooting – Tom.

Thank you to all who attended our AGM and charity shoot. It was a cold day, and we greatly appreciated Park Farm, Phil, Di, and Family as well as the referees who gave their time to support a worthwhile charity. Going forward, to aid in morale and enjoyment, we will be moving the charity shoot to a warmer summer spot and will keep you up to date with our plans when arrangements are in place.
Congratulations to reigning High Gun Chris Moule, who won (70) the Overall John Hadley Memorial Trophy and Whiskey donated by Matt Pugh. Champagne goes to Jo Knapman for winning Lady (69), Paul Cerri for Veteran (68) and Brandon Smith for Open category (67). Cartridges go to top Junior, Connor Davies (68). Champagne
and cartridges kindly donated by Jerry Ruane. Discipline prize money was kindly donated by Park Farm and a couple of generous competitors also donated their winnings, this was much appreciated and will mean £250 goes to Acorns Children’s Hospice.
Our AGM followed and was attended by seven members in addition to our committee. Your committee remains unchanged and full details and reports can be found on our website. Highlights from our Chairman’s report are as follows:
We won the West Midlands Gun Down Trophy with amazing wins at the Inter County FITASC and the Inter-County Sporting. We also won the West Midlands Inter Counties DTL event by a massive margin! We also won the Inter County Olympic Trap and Olympic Skeet events thanks to our future Olympians!
The results from the Juniors are very encouraging and if we had entered a Junior Team in the DTL we would have won the West Midlands Junior Trophy and £250 but sadly this didn’t happen.

Hello all – Well February has been a busy month AGM’S Awards Etc. Firstly let me say a big thank you to all those who turned up for the awards shoot and AGM to which the weather played ball for once and made for a great day. The day began with a 50-target layout to blow those winter cobwebs out, followed by the awards, buffet and AGM. Below is the Shropshire
As a committee we will support Juniors whenever we can along with the support of West Midlands Regional committee. We will pay for all Juniors cartridges, and it is hoped that the WM Committee will pay for their Targets Only entries at all the Inter County events. (Team Members). Each selected Junior/ Colt received £200 funding in 2024.
We are very keen to support our Lady Shooters at competition level and will look at refunding our Ladies Team entries to any Inter County Team event (if they request a refund).
All that I can ask from our members is that you try your best to support our County whenever you can and if you do need help with attending our events, or have any questions about Hereford & Worcester CPSA, please let a member of the committee know.
The 2024 Chris Bayliss Memorial Trophies are given for English Sporting, Down the Line and the Ladies trophy is for Skeet. They’re awarded using the scores from the Area, Inter county and County championship with your top two scores out of the 3 competitions to count. The Chris Bayliss Memorial trophy for 2024 for English sporting goes to Charlie Drury with a 91 at Inter county and 90 at our County championships, a combined score of 181. The Chris Bayliss Memorial trophy for DTL goes to Dan Price with scores of 297 (area or IC) and 297 for County combining to 593. The lady’s trophy was only arranged part way through the year after the Area so apologies for no advertising however, if you’d shot the Area the score would have counted. With an Intercounty score of 92 and a county score of 84 the 2024 trophy goes to Karen Mackison. As I write this piece spring has well and truly arrived with a look through the window revealing blue sky, sunshine and temperatures that really are tempting us out to do some shooting. We have several of our County Championship dates now agreed and you can find these at the foot of this article together with some of the West Midlands Regional

On Tuesday 11 February, East Midlands CPSA held their AGM. It was a celebration and thankyou to two of incolnshire s finest volunteers anet and Paul Stennett. With over 35 years joint service, Janet and Paul have decided to take a well-earned rest from East Midlands Committee duties, and call time on their positions within the East Midlands committee, Paul as treasurer and Janet as Chair. From everyone at Lincolnshire we thank them both for their unwavering service representing Lincolnshire and East Midlands. East Midlands loss is Lincolnshire’s gain, as Paul and Janet remain a very active force within the County Committee.

13 Jan: AGM
I think next year I’ll suggest that we hold this meeting in a small people carrier. It would fit in all those who attend and still have room for the dog. Apart from the usual county business, reported last issue, John Martin gave us information about the doings within the region and nationally – some interesting sponsors for the big competitions this year. The committee welcomed Marco Loxley into its midst to swell the committee numbers to nine. Let’s wish him well.
I’m please to say that Marty has worked her magic again and following a relaxing break in sunnier climes she has come back with vim and vigour. Fixtures based at the Northampton Shooting Ground are now confirmed and up on the website, alongside those for the regional and national events.
As I’m typing this, dates for Universal Trench, ZZ Helice, and FITASC are in the process of being confirmed, so they will probably be published by the time you read this. The sourcing of ground and date for the Olympic Trap is proving a little slower but – as there were no county guns at the East Yorkshire ground last year – I don’t think the delay will be too problematical for enthusiasts.
These continue to prove popular, and the entries continue to be in the low hundreds each time. Shooters come from far and wide to compete. he first two of the new year were held on 5th and 19th January and had an Essex shooter Clive Scase taking home the High Gun prize. The only one of February saw local shooter Henry Collins take the prize.
All these competitions have been shot in some of the most challenging conditions we have seen so far. There have been weather warnings for high winds and heavy rain but still the event goes on. Roy and Pete have worked hard designing different layouts for each competition whilst ensuring that the shooting is safe for the conditions as well as challenging and fun. A big thanks must go to them for their hard work.
As I look out at the greening hedgerows and the signs of the blackthorn beginning to bud, I can also see evidence of Roy's planning to come. here is a fine crop of
battue clays ready to be added to the mix later in the season. These tricky turning clays will provide enjoyment and challenge when the weather settles down.
As always at the start of the season the county committee is looking for ways to encourage those who shoot for fun into the competition matches, and those who shoot competitively in the county to take a further step and represent the county in the Inter County competitions.
Previous enticements, encouragements, and thanks have included: the pot luck

16 Feb: ESK Winter Series Finale
And that’s a wrap! The English Skeet Winter Series has come to a thrilling close, and what a series it’s been. Huge thanks to everyone who braved the cold to support us and take part. Your dedication is incredible, and we truly appreciate it.
The top scores, classes, and categories were settled without the need for any tiebreakers, leaving ust one final showdown, the super shoot-off for the Webley & Scott shotgun. ith all eight finalists available, they were split into two squads of four, setting the stage for an intense battle. he first round decided first and second place, but for the rest, the competition was far from over. After two more gruelling rounds, all positions down to sixth place were determined, leaving ust two shooters to fight for the final spot. he pressure was on as they stepped up to peg four, facing a demanding pairs round to break the tie.
As the skies darkened, the results were finally in. ongratulations toall our winners and a massive thank you to everyone who competed throughout the series. It’s been an unforgettable season!
prizes of a slab of 250 cartridges when a competition is added to the 'If You're In: You May Win' series, a pot luck prize of £50 if you shoot as part of a county team in Inter-County competitions, and a 'thank you' box of 25 cartridges to every gun entered in the Inter-County competitions. If you have any ideas for encouragements or thanks to shooters, please let Roy or Marty know. For me I'd love it if you emailed photos of you or your friends shooting so that I can use them in the reports to come for this year.
25 Feb: DTL Winter Series Comes to a Spectacular End
Another winter series has drawn to a close, and what an incredible season it’s been at NDGC! Over the past few months, we’ve seen it all – rain, snow, wind, and the occasional burst of sunshine – but most importantly, we’ve had plenty of fun! A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to our fantastic sponsors, Webley & Scott and Hull Cartridge Company, for their continued support.
The standout performer of the series was Allen Warren, who showcased remarkable consistency to claim the Overall High Gun title. But as always, the Super Shoot-Off was where the drama unfolded. Eight competitors stepped up, knowing that in this format, anything can happen – and it did! Pete Dale, a C Class shooter, held his nerve to take the win and walk away with a Webley & Scott 912XS shotgun. A truly impressive display of composure under pressure. Check out the full list of winners and presentation photos on our Facebook page.
The Roger Collingham Memorial Shoot returns on 28 June and, as always, it’s set to be one of the most popular events of
the year. Known for its unique format, this charity shoot raises vital funds for Cancer Research UK and typically sells out fast – so if you want to take part, we strongly recommend booking early!
e re delighted to confirm that the event will once again be sponsored by Hull Cartridge Company and Laporte Industries.

There isn’t normally a lot to report on at this time of the year, but we did have a few Hampshire shooters attending the Fujairah Mountain Shooting championship 2025. It looks as if it was exceptional! If you want to see more of the targets, then visit Charlie’s You Tube channel.
Richard Faulds had this to say about the shoot: “UAE has been a phenomenal trip. Full credit to George Hickman Digweed and the whole team behind the scenes who have put on a world-class event. Also, a huge thank you to the Crown Prince of Fujairah, who without him none of this would have been possible. We have been incredibly well looked after from the moment we arrived in Dubai airport and the organisation has been fantastic. We have all no doubt hit and missed targets we have never seen before or may never again. If you didn’t come you have missed out.”
Charlie Faulds reports: “A Huge thank you to the whole FMSC team for making such a uality five star event possible. his has been my favourite competition I have attended during my shooting adventures so far. The targets were set with skill, making for tricky transitions and making you work hard for every line that was scored on the card. his was the first time I’ve come to this shoot, and I was pleased to keep a consistent score each day and also staying 20+ on every layout. I started off slow but by the end of the competition
Please keep an eye on the Cornwall CPSA Facebook page for the latest updates.
Keep up the great scores and ensure you have checked your CPSA membership is up to date and if you can encourage anyone who isn’t signed up yet to Join the Cornwall CPSA as this will help us grow the sport, we all enjoy plus you get the added protection the CPSA gives you as a member.
The Cornwall CPSA Committee are also in the process of contacting our local MPs and the Police and Crime commissioner, and Devon and Cornwall Chief constable to raise our concerns on the recent law and charge changes in regards of Shotgun and Firearms certificates, on behalf of our members and we will update you in the future with the updates and responses which we receive. We are stronger
I had got into the swing of things. My two favourite layouts were three and eight, where I scored 25/30 and 26/30 –even with a slight fear of heights which wasn’t helpful!”
Josh Poyser said: “I had a great time last week in Dubai at the FMSC championships in Fujairah. It was an amazing event and we had some great company. They put on some very good targets that most of us have never seen before. finished on 77 which was just outside the top ten but a good result and a good start to the year. “
Anthony Harper wrote: “Well we are sat here in Dubai Airport waiting for our ight home re ecting on what was, without doubt, the most amazing shooting championship I have ever had the honour of participating in. From meeting fellow shooters from around the globe, exceptional hospitality and organisation, to shooting the most incredible targets, all with the finest desert scenery one could ever imagine! Overall, I shot well considering how the targets presented, with just a couple of layouts early on being
together and if you have more members, we have a better voice to try to work with the people in higher places, also any new members will also have insurance and
particularly tricky. Day two was a good day as had managed to hit a ash clay, bagging an instant 500USD! A big thank you to everyone involved in setting up and running the Fujairah Mountain Shooting Championship – I can’t wait for the next one.”
Back in the wet, cold and windy UK, ichard and harlie are already fighting it out for top spot at shoots with a Joint High Gun at Barbury in February, this is going to be a great rivalry, I wouldn’t want to bet on who comes out on top!
Lots to look forward to in April with the first of our ounty hampionships, please check the Hampshire CPSA website for dates and details of how to book on. We also hope to have some of the SW Region Championship dates soon so keep an eye on the website and Facebook for details.

Hello Oxfordshire, it is with a heavy heart that I write this month’s report because after 13 years and three months I am having to pass the role over to someone new. Sadly my landlord has served me notice and I am having to move to pastures new, which will not necessarily be within the County of Oxfordshire. Thank you to all that have taken the time to read and digest my monthly drivel. I will be handing the reins over to a very familiar face to many of you, Steph Blundell. Thank you, Steph, for giving it a go and I wish you the best of luck.

So, on with this month’s report. We hosted our Annual AGM on Friday 28 February which was held at Sturdy’s Castle. We had a healthy turnout, it could always be better, but it was nice to see some familiar faces. It was, at times, a heated meeting with lots to discuss, some great input from CPSA’s Nicola Heron regarding the lead ban which is imminent and the attempted changes by the government in the issuing and holding of shotguns and firearms in the future. I am pleased to report, apart from my departure, the committee remains the same, but it was announced that 2026 will see the retirement of Martin as Chairman. This is sad news for the County as he has worked tirelessly for the last 13 years doing this ob. he committee will find it hard to fill your shoes.

23 Feb: Surrey Sportrap Championship, Southdown
Our Championships got off to an early start this year with the Sportrap County Competition at Southdown on an increasingly windy day. First win of the year and top Supreme points go to Billy Greenwood with 93, which also gave him the high gun prize on the day. Second with 89 was Chip Smith and third with 86 was Nick Carter. In equal fourth with 85 was last year’s winner Paul Finney and top Lady Sarah White. Well done to you all especially as the Southdown Ref’s likened the third layout to ‘FITASC’ standard targets. Thank you to Southdown for hosting the event and of course the referees. The accompanying photo of Chip and Sarah was not taken at Southdown but at the Cavalry and Guards Club, Piccadilly, where they were invited to attend the Extra Mile awards in recognition of the funds raised through their annual Combat Stress fundraising shoot.

that the sport is still as popular as ever. Not much to report from the County this month but some new initiatives have been introduced to hopefully promote County team interest and introduce new shooters to the sport.
Inter County team expression of interest The committee have decided to produce a form, both physical and electronic, that has a list of the various discipline Inter County teams and places for the shooters details. If anyone wishes to be considered
for a place in the respective teams, and you can go for more than one, please fill one out and submit it. They are downloadable from the Sussex CPSA website, Facebook and Instagram pages or picked up from Southdown Gun Club reception. We have decided to produce it because we don’t know everyone and are hoping to reach out into the whole Sussex clay shooting community. Sussex teams are very under represented by Ladies, Juniors and Colts especially in the Olympic and none sporting disciplines so this is an ideal time
to get yourself known. We would rather submit a team of willing volunteers than no team at all.
County competitions
We have managed to arrange all but two of the Sussex County competitions, see list below, so you can get booked in and organised early. Booking is with the respective grounds and we would like to encourage as many of you as possible to attend them. All the category winners get a badge -who doesn’t like a badge, and also as mentioned in previous articles points depending on placing are awarded towards the Supreme Champion competition.
We are having a “Have a go” day at Southdown Gun Club on Saturday 21st June to introduce people to clay shooting. It’s always nice to report when a Member of Parliment has a positive view on shooting. ndew Griffith P writes head of International Women’s day, which is on the 8th March, I met with Mhari-Ann Troup, female “top gun” and founder/owner of Dynamic Ladies Shooting Club. Despite clay shooting being a male dominated sport, Mhari-Ann is dedicated to increasing female participation. Founded in 2020 the DLSC welcomes women of all ages, starting from 12 at the Southdown Gun
Club in Findon. I am truly impressed by her efforts and encourage more women to try shooting in a fun and relaxed enviroment. Plesae head down and get involved.

New English Sporting England Team Manager
QWhat age did you start shooting?
To my eternal regret, I only came to shooting about 20 years ago. I got the bug through corporate shoots and then progressed into ‘proper’ targets from there. y first lessons were at isley Shooting Ground and it’s a great pleasure to me that isley is now where work as an instructor.
QWhat do you enjoy most about the sport?
QWhat advice would you give to your younger self starting out in the sport?
See question one, start shooting earlier. I’m technically a much better shooter than I was 2 years ago but m 2 years older now at 65. So, mourn those lost years wasted on sports like tennis and golf.
QWhat is coming up for you in the next 12 months?
QCan you tell us about your time owning a shooting ground in Florida?
there’s lots of UK choices but can I choose a US one?
Nationals at San Antonio, Texas, in October. I’ve shot it for about ten years there and it s like isneyland for clay shooters, with 2,5 competitors and a wide range of events. I’ve made a lot of friends there and was the ngland delegate to the NSCA for a long time so there’s always someone to catch up with.
For me it’s the fascination of how to hit the target. Whether you’re averaging 5 or 55, we re all obsessed with the one that got away and that brings me back every time.
Q
Favourite discipline and competition?
I must say English Sporting, of course, but that’s actually true in my case, as it is for the majority of clay shooters in this country, including Sporting s wider family of Super Sporting and Sportrap. I love the variety and challenge of the layouts – plus the opportunity to chat between stands. do like to talk….
Favourite competition –
QHow did you come to be the new England English Sporting Manager?
The CPSA had advertised the role and as a board member was aware of that. hen, as a PS evel 2 oach, was interested in the process. I’ve been a senior coach at Cambridge University for about five years and this year have switched to coach the Oxford University squad, so I’m that rare thing, a coach that is used to thinking about teams rather than individuals. That seems to have morphed into me taking on this role. It’s a manager’s job not a coaching one, but there’s a good deal of overlap in terms of organisation and planning.
I bought Gulf Coast Clays in 2 2. y day ob was running a TV production company, so was spending a lot of time in the US anyway and thought I’d add that to the travel plans. Its a 65 acre property in the Everglades but was a bit run down, so put some money into upgrading everything and installed an excellent manager so I could run it from the UK. We had two Skeet, two rap, a 5 Stand (Sportrap) and a full Sporting lays layout, in between the swamps and the alligators. t was always good fun and it taught me a lot about the US shooting scene. I sold it at the end of 2 which, given what happened to us all in 2020, was a good move!
QIf you could choose three people to shoot with –past or present – who would they be and why?
would have liked to have said my three daughters who are all adults now but, as have completely failed to interest them in the sport, that’s not going to happen. I’d be interested to shoot with three great ball sports athletes, say Roger Federer, Joe Root, and the late enis aw (as read his obituary recently). Sporting clays is a game where you have to rely on your subconscious assessment of speed and distance, alongside your hard focus, so I’d love to watch other athletes bring those skills to our sport.
The big focus from an England team perspective will be the orld nglish Sporting Championship at . . hurchill in uly. y the time you read this, selection shoots will have started for the England team. And of course, next year, WESP is in the US, for the 250th anniversary of American independence so that will be interesting for us rits. ut we ve also got some major student events to get to first the arsity atch is a key fi ture for me in arch and m working on the first Inter Collegiate All Round shoot at the NCSC in April. nd ve got to fit in some shooting of my own, though the more coach, the lower my scores go, so by the end of the year I expect I’ll be in lass!
QIs there anything you’d like to say to aspiring England ESP team members?
The selection shoots are open to all and are hugely popular competitions, so we really do want to see as many hopeful shooters as possible. It’s a massive honour to represent your country and we re very lucky we have a sport where you can take your chance against the best shooters in ngland. o speak in clich s, like any good team manager, it really is a level playing field so come and give it a go.
