Healing Hilot

Discover the ancient Filipino art of healing that has successfully transcended cultural boundaries to find its niche in modern healthcare

The ancient healing practice of hilot, encompasses much more than physical relaxation. Hilot is a holistic approach to wellness, integrating physical touch, herbal remedies, and spiritual elements to restore balance and harmony within the body and mind. From its historical roots to its modern adaptations, hilot is a significant and cherished aspect of Filipino culture.

Traditionally, hilot was performed by a hilot or manghihilot, a practitioner who possessed deep knowledge of anatomy, herbal medicine, and spiritual healing. The practice involves identifying and treating imbalances in the body, known as lamig (cold spots) or init (hot spots), which are believed to be the source of discomfort or illness. By addressing these imbalances, hilot aims to promote overall wellbeing and prevent illness. Despite its inclusion in spa treatments, hilot should not be mistaken for a mere relaxation massage. It is a holistic approach to healing that encompasses several key components.

The foundation of hilot lies in its use of therapeutic touch. Practitioners use a variety of techniques, including pindot (pressing), haplos (stroking), and dagdagay (foot massage), to manipulate the muscles and tissues. The physical touch in hilot is not just about soothing muscles but also about identifying areas of imbalance. The hilot’s skilled hands can detect lumps, knots, or other irregularities, which are believed to indicate areas where energy flow is disrupted. By applying pressure to these areas, the hilot helps release tension, improve circulation, and promote the body’s natural healing processes.

In addition to physical manipulation, hilot often incorporates the use of herbal remedies. The Philippines’ rich biodiversity provides a wealth of medicinal plants, which are used to create oils, poultices, and teas. These remedies are tailored to the individual’s needs, with specific herbs chosen for their healing properties. For example, coconut oil is commonly used in hilot for its soothing and anti-inflammatory effects, while

ginger is often applied to reduce pain and swelling. The use of these natural remedies complements the physical aspects of hilot, enhancing its therapeutic effects.

Hilot also includes a spiritual dimension, reflecting the holistic worldview of many indigenous Filipino cultures. The practice often involves rituals and prayers, intended to align the individual’s energy with the natural world and the divine. Hilot practitioners may use incantations, offer prayers, or engage in pag-anito (a form of communication with ancestral spirits) to aid in the healing process. This spiritual component acknowledges that well-being is not solely a physical state but also involves mental and emotional harmony. By addressing the spiritual aspects of health, hilot offers a comprehensive approach to healing that nurtures the whole person.

In contemporary Philippine society, hilot continues to hold a respected place as a healing practice. While modern medicine is widely accessible, many Filipinos still turn to hilot for its holistic benefits. The practice is particularly popular in rural areas, where traditional knowledge remains strong and is often integrated with modern healthcare practices. Additionally, the rise of wellness tourism has brought hilot to an international audience, with visitors seeking out this unique form of healing to experience its benefits firsthand. F

In recent years there has been a renaissance in traditional wellness practices, and hilot is no exception. This ancient Filipino massage and healing technique has successfully transcended cultural boundaries, finding its niche in modern healthcare and spa industries. Categorized by the World Health Organization as Indigenous Traditional Medicine on which it is the sum total of knowledges and practices, whether explicable or not, used in diagnosing, preventing or eliminating physical, mental and social diseases. This knowledge or practice may rely exclusively on past experience and observation handed down orally or in writing from generation to generation.

With an increasing number of people looking for natural and holistic ways to maintain health, hilot offers a comprehensive solution that bridges ancestral wisdom with contemporary needs.

One of the most prominent applications of hilot today is in physical therapy and rehabilitation. Practitioners incorporate hilot to help patients recover from injuries and manage chronic pain. Techniques like deep tissue massage and the use of heat therapy from warm banana leaves or herbal poultices can accelerate healing and provide pain relief. This makes hilot a valuable complementary treatment for conditions such as muscle strains, joint pain, and nerve issues.

In the spa industry, hilot has gained popularity as an indulgent wellness service that promotes relaxation and stress relief. Many luxury spas have included hilot massage in their service menus, often packaging it with other traditional Filipino treatments like the use of coconut oil and herbal baths. Spa-goers seeking a unique and culturally rich experience find hilot to be not just a treatment, but an enchanting journey into Filipino culture and wellness traditions.

Moreover, the holistic nature of hilot makes it a suitable practice for mental health and emotional

wellbeing. Many practitioners believe that hilot can balance the body’s energy, which in turn stabilizes mood and relieves stress. This aligns well with the growing interest in mind-body practices such as yoga and meditation, offering another layer of holistic care. Practicing hilot in a mindful setting can provide an immersive experience that nurtures both the body and the soul.

Interestingly, some forward-thinking healthcare providers have started to integrate hilot into their treatment plans. Clinics specializing in integrative medicine and complementary therapies often recommend hilot as part of a comprehensive wellness routine. By combining conventional medical treatments with traditional practices like hilot, patients can enjoy a more rounded approach to health that addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Education and certification programs for aspiring hilot practitioners have also evolved, aiming to preserve this ancient art while ensuring its proper application in modern contexts. These programs are designed not only to teach the techniques but also to impart the cultural and historical significance of hilot. As more people gain formal training, the practice is poised to reach wider audiences, spreading the benefits of hilot far beyond its origins in the Philippines.

Overall, hilot is more than just a massage; it is a profound expression of Filipino cultural heritage and a testament to the enduring wisdom of traditional healing practices. Its integration of physical touch, herbal remedies, and spiritual elements offers a holistic approach to well-being that resonates with modern desires for comprehensive health solutions. Whether one is seeking relief from physical discomfort or a deeper sense of spiritual balance, hilot provides a pathway to healing that honours the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit.

For those curious to experience the ancient art of hilot, consider visiting a reputable hilot practitioner or a spa that offers authentic hilot treatments. Whether in the bustling cities or the tranquil provinces of the Philippines, hilot awaits to share its healing touch and time-honored wisdom. Embrace the opportunity to reconnect with this cherished cultural practice and discover the profound benefits of hilot for yourself.

Principles of

Ayurveda

Dr. L. Eduardo Cardona-Sanclemente shares his insights into ayurveda and the role it can play in treating obesity and gut health

Ayurveda is a holistic health care system that is approximately ve thousand years old. Originally, it was passed on by oral tradition, and its earliest documentation is found in the ancient philosophical texts known as the Vedas, a profound component of Indian culture and history, and a cornerstone of Hinduism. Ayurveda has been practiced in hospitals throughout India for thousands of years, treating millions of patients. However, in the Western world, ayurveda is still considered to be a complementary or alternative medicine, despite its longdocumented history and daily practice

in India. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized ayurveda as a safe traditional medicine based on an extensive body of scienti c evidence.

Ayurveda’s main objective is restoring balance within you. It is that simple, because all components of ayurvedic medicine align to achieve this goal. Ayurveda emphasizes the wholeness of each of us. It de nes wellness as a state in which all bodily tissues, organs, systems, and functions are acting together interdependently to maintain the delicate balance between body, mind, and consciousness (spirit) so as to promote good health, in spite of many negative in uences around us.

MAIN FACTORS OF IMBALANCE

When your gut is in a state of imbalance, its ability to manufacture and synthetize, as well as assimilate and absorb various nutrients, regulate blood sugar, and store fat becomes impaired. These imbalanced conditions occur most often due to overeating in parallel with low expenditure of energy. They become

the cause for accumulation of lipids, in particular at the level of adipose tissue and liver. A deterioration in these basic functions can lead to putting on extra weight, or becoming overweight or obese. By maintaining balanced gut health, we can prevent or more easily manage such conditions.

In Western scientific terms, obesity is described as a multifactorial disease involving a complex network of physical, systemic, physiological, and mental factors. Your body accommodates excess calories – which normally come from carbohydrates, fats, or proteins – as forms of fat that may impair the maintenance of good heath, because this fat cannot be burned off through the usual channels. Many Western diets are high in calories, frequently from fast food and highcalorie beverages. People with body imbalances might need to eat more calories, or what we call “empty calories,” before feeling full, or may eat more than is necessary due to stress or anxiety. The ayurvedic approach of personalized or tailored nutrition recognizes our individuality and is rooted in the concept that one size does not fit all. I am sure this perception resonates within you.

ENCOURAGEMENT

To encourage you to read further, let me set out some key challenges and explain how I approach the subject at hand. If weight loss and rebalancing were easy, you wouldn’t be reading. Weight loss, for most people, is not just a simple equation of eating less

Recognizes our individuality and is rooted in the concept that one size does not fit all.

or exercising more. It is important to investigate the ayurvedic understanding of how your gut functions based on your individual body constitution (your prakruti) and its potential and limitations.

The words obese or obesity have clear medical meanings, but they often appear with adjectives, such as “morbidly obese.” However, the categories of “obese” and “overweight” in fact exist in various grades; one is not simply obese or morbidly obese – these distinctions are more nuanced than merely one or the other. As such, I will refer to grades of obesity where possible or helpful. One fundamental pillar of ayurveda is the respect for all creatures.

Awareness of your body imbalance and what it means for those who are trying to manage extra weight, or who are overweight or obese, is critical to making change. We will explore this in both ayurvedic and modern scientific terms, address specific gut health and weight issues, and present effective ways you can tackle weight and general gut health in your daily life, with minimal disruption to your regular activities.

Let me share that recently, I wrote a book called Ayurveda for Depression, and through the process of writing on this other pandemic condition, I was reminded of the many interconnections between these subjects. For that reason, here, I will sometimes refer you to the contents of my previous book to provide you some complementary information that may be helpful.

A SOCIETAL APPROACH

Modern biomedical research seeks to provide answers as to how we can effectively address these physical, and mental, imbalances. However, these approaches tend to be more “macro” in their application – a one-size-fitsall prescription – irrespective of the reasons for a particular individual’s being overweight or suffering from obesity. This can result in standard “Guidelines” that cover virtually everyone but may not be ideal for many people.

Ayurveda differs fundamentally in its approach: you are a person requiring solutions tailored for you and your condition; you are not treated as a tiny replication within a larger pool of patients. Also, let me note here that words matter: The modern language used in addressing pandemic or epidemic challenges is often the language of warfare – ”the war on drugs,” “the war on terror,” “the war against cancer,” “the battle against obesity,” and more recently, “the war against Covid.” It is the language of fighting, conflict, and confrontation. It is not the language of solutions. Perhaps it

is time to stop “killing” and instead start noticing and learning to live based on the observation of our biological processes that lead us to these types of personal imbalances and participate actively from a nonviolent place within ourselves.

What we don’t hear – and what I want to address more specifically, under the light of ayurveda – is a more discerning language of change: “the answer to obesity” instead of “the war against obesity”; or “the connection to our gut” instead of “the war against calories.” Connecting and sharing “the answer” is a step toward resolution of the challenge at hand. Nobody is at war with anybody here. This phrasing reshapes our expectations, showing us that we will not be fighting and killing but instead facing and solving the issues.

We will also address and describe extra weight, being overweight, and obesity conditions as metabolic imbalances in order to differentiate them from the relatively new term metabolic syndrome, a cluster of biochemical and physiological abnormalities such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure, anomalous cholesterol levels, and surplus body fat around the waist –all of which are associated with the development of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, as well as type 2 diabetes. Most of the ailments related to metabolic syndrome have no symptoms, and they respond well to exercise, weight loss, proper diet, and other lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, which can eventually be supported by prescribed medication.

YOUR TREE

Like us, trees also come in all shapes and sizes, and they have the potential to grow healthier and thrive when planted on favourable and protective grounds. Looking at nature, we see that trees are nurtured through the elements of light, earth, air, heat, and space, and require a balance of these factors to grow. A mango tree will produce mangos, and their taste will be sweet, while a lemon tree will grow lemons with a sour or bitter taste. Even if they were planted in the same soil and received identical nourishment, their inner natures will result in fruits with specific characteristics. Of course, to create their fruits, these trees require special care such as the right soil and water, and the eradication of weeds. So, consider, if you were a tree, what type of tree would you be?

We have been and remain engaged in a process that is doing continuous

damage to nature, which we lack the light or clarity to discern, and which as a result directly affects what is so beautifully described in ayurveda as prakruti – our individual constitution. Our human situation cannot be compared to trees well-nourished by exceptional soil conditions that allow them to grow, spread, and create worthy output. Independently of our prakruti, either by ignorance, misuse, or abuse, we allow the growth of many weeds around us in our daily lives, often in the form of habits. Additionally, we do not necessarily know the kinds of fruits that life has invited us to yield, and as a result, in the process of daily life, these weeds can proliferate, consume space, and use up our essential substrates, making us weaker and more imbalanced. Without taking care, we can end up being identified with the weeds we nurture within and around us.

Biotech Skincare

A New Era in Skin Health

The skincare industry is rapidly evolving, with biotechnology emerging as a groundbreaking force that is transforming how we care for our skin

Biotech skincare integrates advanced scienti c principles with innovative technology to create products that o er superior e ectiveness, safety, and sustainability. This new era promises to enhance our understanding of skin health and revolutionize the way we approach skincare.

Biotech skincare refers to the use of biological systems and processes to develop skincare products that improve skin health. This approach leverages various methodologies, including the use of microorganisms, enzymes, and bioengineered ingredients, to create active compounds that address speci c skin concerns.

Fermentation is a key process in biotech skincare, allowing for the conversion of organic

materials through the action of microorganisms. This technique can enhance the potency of natural ingredients, producing potent antioxidants and nutrients that bene t the skin. For instance, fermented extracts from plants and algae have been shown to improve skin hydration and elasticity while providing a boost of vitamins and minerals.

Peptides, which are short chains of amino acids, play a vital role in skin function. In biotech skincare, speci c peptides are engineered to penetrate the skin more e ectively and stimulate biological processes. These peptides can promote collagen production, reduce in ammation, and enhance cellular repair, leading to healthier, more resilient skin. The

targeted action of biotechnology allows for products that address ne lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging with remarkable e cacy.

Plant stem cells are increasingly used in skincare formulations for their regenerative properties. These cells contain growth factors and antioxidants that can rejuvenate the skin and protect it from environmental stressors. By incorporating plant stem cells into skincare products, brands can o er solutions that help repair and revitalize the skin, promoting a youthful appearance and improved texture.

Recent advancements in biotechnology have enabled the bioengineering of ingredients to mimic the beneficial e ects of natural compounds.

means that biotech skincare products can deliver heightened e cacy and targeted bene ts for di erent skin conditions.

Recent advancements in biotechnology have enabled the bioengineering of ingredients to mimic the bene cial e ects of natural compounds. For example, bioengineered hyaluronic acid is created to provide superior moisture retention compared to traditional sources. This precision in ingredient development

As awareness of environmental issues grows, sustainability has become a crucial consideration in product development. Biotech skincare often employs sustainable practices, such as sourcing raw materials from renewable resources and utilizing fermentation processes that require fewer agricultural inputs. By minimizing the ecological footprint of their products, biotech

skincare brands align themselves with the values of eco-conscious consumers. Moreover, many biotech companies emphasize cruelty-free methods, ensuring that their products are developed without animal testing, with some also being vegan-friendly.

One of the most promising aspects of biotech skincare is the potential for personalized formulations. Advances in technology allow brands to analyse individual skin profiles, considering factors like skin type, age, and unique concerns. By tailoring products to meet specific needs, biotech skincare can deliver enhanced results, improving user satisfaction and efficacy.

As research in biotechnology continues to advance, the future of skincare holds immense possibilities. Biotech skincare represents a new frontier in the quest for healthy, beautiful skin. By merging scientific innovation with sustainable practices, this approach is set to redefine skincare as we know it.

Why are More Athletes Turning to

Naturopathic Medicine?

Dr Sophia Adams shares some of the ways naturopathic medicine could prove useful to all athletes with pre and post-workout recommendations

Three of our determinants of health are structural integrity, posture, and exibility. Each one is critical to address for longevity and injury prevention. Proper warm-ups and cool downs, stretching sequences pre and post-workouts, and dynamic technical activities with the soccer ball, basketball, etc. greatly improve optimal form, length, and strength in the sport.

Post-workout I recommend ice baths, either up to the waist or from the knees down. This hydrotherapy technique decreases soreness (especially during two practices a day). In the evening, I suggest taking a hot bath with Epsom salts to release unnecessary tension in the body and improve mobility. Adding essential oils, like lavender and eucalyptus, to the water also promotes a more restful night’s sleep. Diet and hydration are two of the most important basic determinants of our heath, as they are the fuel for performance, muscle recovery, and longevity.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE CAN HELP ATHLETES RECOVER FASTER FROM INJURY

For any sti ness, soreness, and bruising from a contact sport like soccer, homeopathic arnica gel is essential to have on hand. I suggest

applying it topically before and after practices and games. Applying the gel after workouts will help with post workout recovery. In my own personal experience, I noticed that I would not be as sore as my teammates after using it topically or taking the oral Arnica montana 30C homeopathic pellets.

A 2020 study found homeopathic Arnica montana helps promote positive e ects on cell adhesion and migration during tissue development and healing. In addition, diet modi cations can be extremely bene cial and safe alongside conventional treatments. Certain foods

in uence the in ammatory responses and possess key nutrients essential for reestablishing proper functional and structural integrity of our cells and tissues.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE CAN IMPROVE AN ATHLETE’S MENTAL HEALTH

Athletes are more than just their sport; they are human beings. They have emotions, passions, religious values, and families. The naturopathic philosophy takes all these things into consideration. Care plans incorporate not just physical symptoms but the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of one’s health, as well.

For the mental aspect of our sport, visualization is imperative. Prior to matches, visualizing your technical skills with the ball, shooting, defending, etc. can decrease pre-

game anxiety and switch on your “game day brain” to help focus before or during the match.

Flower essences or remedies, taken orally, can be used to help injured athletes struggling with sitting out of practice, having increased anxiety and those who have lost hope in their recovery. O ered by Bach Flower Remedies, the ower essences are individually selected to match a client’s emotional/mental state. Star of Bethlehem can help if the athlete was traumatized after their injury. Sweet Chestnut can uplift their hopes if they feel like there is no end to their physical/mental su ering.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE OFFERS MANY SOLUTIONS TO ALLERGY SYMPTOMS

With the majority of sports taking place outside, allergies are among the

most common complaints athletes have. In conjunction with conventional medicine, homeopathic remedies can be an e ective and safe treatment. Most remedies are gentle and have been approved for over-thecounter use.

Taking a probiotic and ensuring you’re getting the right nutrients is another way to help improve symptoms. New research links the presence of bene cial bacteria in the gut with reduced incidence of allergies. A recent study also found that omega-3 fatty acids, in particular, can help prevent and improve both asthma and allergy symptoms due to their antiin ammatory properties.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE CAN HELP ATHLETES MANAGE CHRONIC PAIN

Naturopathic medicine can provide all-natural pain management interventions without the side e ects of pharmaceutical medicine. For example, physical adjustments to the spine and extremities help to balance the nervous system and improve both pain regulation and circulation. Homeopathic remedies provided pre- and post-surgery can be used to decrease pain, bleeding, and soreness post operation. In situations of trauma, shock, muscle/ligament tears, swelling/bruising, and wound healing, homeopathic or cell salt implementation can also be bene cial.

TOOLS FOR THE WHOLE TEAM

For the athletes I coach, I create packets for each one with the best pre

Earth Path of Taoism

AThe eight-step process based on the life-prolonging and healthenhancing methodology rooted in ancient Chinese wisdom

ccording to the ancient Chinese sages, the most achievable way to health, longevity, and enlightenment starts with the Earth Path of Taoism.

Sifu Peter Newton explains the principles and practices underlying the life-prolonging and healthenhancing methodology of the Earth Path and provides an easy-to-follow eight-step process to integrate this longevity wisdom into daily life.

Drawing from tai chi and qigong, he explores how to avoid premature ageing, highlights body posture as well as a exible outlook on life, and looks at profound breathing.

Lao Tzu the great Taoist mythical philosopher sage once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the rst step.” This is where that step must be taken upon the Earth Path of ZhongLi and Lu, and a most enlightening experience it is, too. Some people stride along this pathway of life and achieve the ultimate goal; to live to a ripe old age and remain contented and healthy throughout. Others may not be so fortunate and nd ill health has come to visit, either from birth or arrives later in life. Its impact is not only felt personally but it ripples out and negatively a ects their closest family and friends. It destroys dreams and

aspirations, lowers self-esteem and con dence, and causes stress and anxiety, introducing more conditions that compound the existing problem.

As you stumble along the Earth Path, not knowing what lies before you, this is where you will discover that there is another way. It is time to sit quietly (jing zuo) and look back at yourself with fresh unemotional eyes, as if you are assessing someone else. If you are living with or without health conditions, be they mental or physical, you can learn from what is about to unfold.

Yangsheng (“illumination”) is a sensible rst step along the Earth Path, as it is concerned with nourishing life, as

promoting vitality and health, and living long. It should start at an early age and remain throughout life, but for those just now stepping into the light after perhaps having spent most of their life in darkness, it is better late than never.

The term yangsheng breaks down as follows:

YANG - NOURISH

This is where you embrace life and live it to the full, while maintaining the protection of the Yin and Yang Cycle of Life and conducting your life with a consistency centred on selfpreservation. The word nourish has a broad meaning, including to feed, sustain, nurture, and cultivate. “But we do that anyway,” I hear you say, and you would be right. But can you honestly say that you are doing the best for yourself? No doubt your intentions are pure and sincere, but you may be falling just short of the desired level of nourishment necessary.

SHENG - LIFE

This refers to life in its purest sense - present in the newborn baby, the earliest shoots of life itself, and categorized as postnatal qi and the birth of shen (life spirit). This untainted innocence is to be protected, and as it grows and matures it still should be kept to its purest origins. This is seen in Taoist and Buddhist monks who emit

PREVIEW OF THE EIGHT STEPS

1

Illumination of Yangsheng

This step introduces the Earth Path and why this path is intended for those who, according to the Tao mind, are lost. Lost people need guidance, grounding, and rooting. Step 1 explains how people get lost in the first place and identifies the root cause, be it self-imposed or accidental. The activated Earth Path switches on what the Chinese call yangsheng (“nourishing life”) and steers us towards a healthy, long, and contented life. My book explores different scenarios, crossreferenced to the relevant steps, with the intention of helping avoid future mistakes in life or remedying those already made.

2 Zhang Luanli - The Long Principle

This step explains how to apply the Chinese concept of zhang (“long”) into all areas of your life. This brings us firmly onto the Earth Path, as every journey starts with the first step. During the decades

I have studied under the masters, all have regularly used the word “long” in their references; for example: “Breathe long, so that the qi will sink into your energy centre (located in the lower abdomen).” They, along with the ancients, also refer to other applications of where and when to apply the Long Principle, and Step 2 visits them all.

3Shen Huxi - Profound Breathing

This step focuses on transforming the biorhythm of unhealthy, shallow mouth breathing to one of healthy, deep, nasal breathing. It interprets the breathing guidance of enlightened beings from a bygone age and reveals its profound nature, drawing comparisons between modern health science recommendations and the old Taoist Masters.

4

Secrets of the Longevity Icons

This step looks at real and mythical icons of longevity who reputedly lived to over 100

years of age, and examines their recommendations in order to inspire you to walk the Earth Path with vigour and emulate their achievements.

5Yin and Yang Rhythms of Life

This step teaches you how to attune to the natural circadian biorhythms needed for this journey. It compares a life out of step with the Tao with one lived in harmony with it, and includes a Yin and Yang lifestyle chart that illustrates how to bring this essential harmony into your life.

6 Jing Zuo - How to Sit Quietly

This step shows the correct way to gaze inwards and discover the stillness within. Stillness creates the perfect atmosphere to strengthen themind, body, and spirit for the successful completion of the Earth Path and encourages beneficial changes to the body’s sophisticated chemistry that are needed to help fight disease (disease is when a body is no longer “at ease”). The step includes do’s and don’ts of jing zuo to ensure it is practised in the correct and natural way.

PROMOTE VITALITY & HEALTH

In simple terms, this means to make time to practice a healthy daily exercise and lifestyle regime, fully in tune with Yin and Yang and feng shui principles, meaning balanced, regular, at the same time, and in the right place.

LONGEVITY

Genetically, we are scheduled to live a specific period of time, as long as we follow the rules of the Tao, which sets this universal period. Broadly speaking, this period is somewhere between 80 and 100 years for both men and women and is classed as a long life in

Stirring the Shen - The Hidden Taoist Secret

This step offers a first look at engaging the shen, the inner potential of the human psyche, integral to Middle Path training, using illustrations and quotations from the Taoist Masters to shine a light on this jewel of practice. Shen is the ultimate motivator for improving health and vitality. The simple foundation techniques offer immediate benefits especially for those with low self-esteem and motivation.

their health and work–life balance. Yangsheng encompasses the specific processes you need to follow while on the path. It is the light bringer and the illuminator that allows you to see the way ahead and avoid the obstacles that would otherwise disrupt your longevity journey.

The Tai Chi Classics is the ancient textbook about how to tune in to the Tao by balancing Yin and Yang throughout the body. Within the scope of yangsheng, the material contained within The Tai Chi Classics has an important role to play, as it dwells at the heart of all things related to posture, breathing, mechanics, and qi circulation. (For an in-depth look at the Classics of tai chi and qigong, please refer to my previous book, Healthy and Fit with Tai Chi: Perfect Your Posture, Balance, and Breathing, (published by Findhorn Press, 2015.)

These collective actions create what the ancient Chinese referred to as the “Eight-Strand Brocade” of health, which cannot be torn and is essential to longevity. Each strand is a therapeutic physical exercise, which practised on their own, offer limited benefits; however, when combined, the eight selective therapeutic and complementary exercises create a strong “brocade” with potentially unlimited benefits. In China, the number eight is regarded as special because it represents infinity, balance, power, strength, wealth, and good fortune.

Tea, berries, dark chocolate and apples could lead to a longer life span, study shows
New research has found that those who consume a diverse range of foods rich in fl avonoids, such as tea, berries, dark chocolate, and apples, could lower their risk of developing serious health conditions and have the potential to live longer

The study was led by a team of researchers from Queen’s University Belfast, Edith Cowan University Perth (ECU), and the Medical University of Vienna and Universitat Wien.

Published in Nature Food, the study tracked over 120,000 participants aging from 40 to 70 years old for over a decade. It is the rst study of its kind to suggest that there is a bene t to consuming a wide range of avonoids beyond that of simply consuming a high quantity. The ndings reveal that increasing the diversity of avonoids within your diet could help prevent the development of health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and neurological disease. The study was led by a team

of researchers from Queen’s University Belfast, Edith Cowan University Perth (ECU), and the Medical University of Vienna and Universitat Wien.

ECU Research Fellow, rst author and co-lead of the study Dr Benjamin Parmenter, made the initial discovery that a avonoid-diverse diet is good for health.

“Flavonoid intakes of around 500 mg a day was associated with a 16% lower risk of all-cause mortality, as well as a 10% lower risk of CVD, type 2 diabetes, and respiratory disease. That’s roughly the amount of avonoids that you would consume in two cups of tea.”

Professor Tilman Kuhn from the Medical University of Vienna, Universitat Wien and Queen’s University Belfast was also a co-lead author, noted that the importance of

diversity of avonoid intake has never been investigated until now, making this study very signi cant as the ndings align with popular claims that eating colourful foods are invaluable to maintain good health.

“Eating fruits and vegetables in a variety of colours, including those rich in avonoids, means you’re more likely to get the vitamins and nutrients you need to sustain a healthier lifestyle,” he said.

The rst-ever dietary guidelines for avonoids were released recently recommending increasing the consumption of avonoids to maintain health.”Our study provides inaugural evidence that we may also need to advise increasing diversity of intake of these compounds for optimal bene ts,”

Dr Parmenter said. “The results provide a clear public health message, suggesting that simple and achievable dietary swaps, such as drinking more tea and eating more berries and apples for example, can help increase the variety and intake of avonoid-rich foods, and potentially improve health in the longterm,” Professor Cassidy added.

Scientists discover cancerghting sugar in sea cucumbers

UM-led study explores how sea cucumber sugars could be used in cancer therapy

Sea cucumbers, long known for cleaning the ocean oor, may also harbour a powerful cancer- ghting secret. Scientists discovered a unique sugar in these marine creatures that can block Sulf-2, an enzyme that cancer cells use to spread. Unlike traditional medications, this compound doesn’t cause dangerous blood clotting issues and o ers a cleaner, potentially more sustainable way to develop carbohydrate-based drugs if scientists can nd a way to synthesize it in the lab.

A sugar compound found in sea cucumbers can e ectively block Sulf-2, an enzyme that plays a major role in cancer growth, according to a University of Mississippi-led study published in Glycobiology

“Marine life produces compounds with unique structures that are often rare or not found in terrestrial vertebrates,” said Marwa Farrag, a fourth-year doctoral candidate in the UM Department of Bio Molecular Sciences. “And so, the sugar compounds in sea cucumbers are unique. They aren’t commonly seen in other organisms. That’s why they’re worth studying.”

Farrag, a native of Assiut, Egypt, and the study’s lead author, worked with a

team of researchers from Ole Miss and Georgetown University on the project.

Human cells, and those of most mammals, are covered in tiny, hairlike structures called glycans that help with cell communication, immune responses and the recognition of threats such as pathogens. Cancer cells alter the expression of certain enzymes, including Sulf-2, which in turn modi es the structure of glycans. This modi cation helps cancer spread.

“The cells in our body are essentially covered in ‘forests’ of glycans,” said Vitor Pomin, associate professor of pharmacognosy. “And enzymes change the function of this forestessentially prunes the leaves of that forest. “If we can inhibit that enzyme, theoretically, we are ghting against the spread of cancer.” Using both computer modeling and laboratory testing, the research team found that the sugarfucosylated chondroitin sulfate - from the sea cucumber Holothuria oridana can e ectively inhibit Sulf-2.

“We were able to compare what we generated experimentally with what the simulation predicted, and they were consistent,” said Robert Doerksen, professor of medicinal chemistry. “That gives us more con dence in the results.”

Unlike other Sulf-2 regulating

medications, the sea cucumber compound does not interfere with blood clotting, said Joshua Sharp, UM associate professor of pharmacology.

“As you can imagine, if you are treating a patient with a molecule that inhibits blood coagulation, then one of the adverse e ects that can be pretty devastating is uncontrolled bleeding,” he said. “So, it’s very promising that this particular molecule that we’re working with doesn’t have that e ect.” As a marine-based cancer therapy, the sea cucumber compound may be easier to create and safer to use.

But sea cucumbers - some variants of which are a culinary delicacy in the Paci c Rim - aren’t so readily abundant that scientists could go out and harvest enough to create a line of medication. The next step in the research is to nd a way to synthesize the sugar compound for future testing.

“One of the problems in developing this as a drug would be the low yield, because you can’t get tons and tons of sea cucumbers,” Pomin said. “So, we have to have a chemical route, and when we’ve developed that, we can begin applying this to animal models.”

Single psilocybin trip delivers two years of depression relief for cancer patients

Psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, might just revolutionize how depression and anxiety are treated in cancer patients. In a groundbreaking trial, a single dose combined with therapy significantly reduced emotional suffering, and these effects often lasted over two years. As followup studies expand the research to multiple doses and larger samples, scientists are eyeing a possible new standard of care that merges psychedelics with psychological support. The findings are published by Wiley online in Cancer, a peerreviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.

Being in nature can help people with chronic back pain manage their condition

Researchers asked patients, some of whom had experienced lower back pain for up to 40 years, if being in nature helped them cope better with their lower back pain. They found that people able to spend time in their own gardens saw some health and wellbeing benefits. However, those able to immerse themselves in larger green spaces such as forests felt even more positive, as they were able to lose themselves in the environment and focus more on that than their pain levels. The researchers have recommended trying to incorporate time spent in nature into people’s treatments plans and are also using their findings to develop virtual reality interventions that allow people to experience some of the benefits of being in nature without the need to travel anywhere if they are unable to do so.

The research, published in The Journal of Pain, is the first of its kind to ask people experiencing chronic lower back pain – in some cases for almost 40 years – about the role nature plays in any coping strategies they employ to help manage their condition.

Based on their findings, the researchers have recommended that people with chronic lower back pain – and the clinicians treating them – give greater consideration to the role nature can play in their health and wellbeing, and suggested natural spaces could be adapted to incorporate more accessible design features.

Dr Sam Hughes, Senior Lecturer in Pain Neuroscience at the University of Exeter and the study’s senior author, said “This study addresses important questions about health equity and the significant physical barriers faced by people living with chronic pain in accessing natural spaces. Many individuals encounter substantial obstacles, including uneven terrain, limited seating, or difficulties leaving their homes, making it challenging for them to benefit from the restorative properties of nature. We think that future research could use immersive technologies, such as virtual reality, to help overcome these barriers which would enable individuals to experience the benefits of nature without needing to physically navigate inaccessible environments. This could significantly enhance inclusivity and accessibility in chronic pain management strategies in the future.”

GINGER VS. CANCER: NATURAL COMPOUND TARGETS TUMOUR METABOLISM

Scientists in Japan have discovered that a natural compound found in a type of ginger called kencur can throw cancer cells into disarray by disrupting how they generate energy. While healthy cells use oxygen to make energy efficiently, cancer cells often rely on a backup method. This ginger-derived molecule doesn’t attack that method directly it shuts down the cells’ fat-making machinery instead, which surprisingly causes the cells to ramp up their backup system even more. The finding opens new doors in the fight against cancer, showing how natural substances might help target cancer’s hidden energy tricks.

Confused about the ASA and CAP, and how to advertise your therapy services?

Complementary medicine and alternative medicines (CAM) can o er physical, emotional or even spiritual support for those with a myriad of health challenges. But not all therapies are created equal, and not all advertising claims are acceptable – as many advertisers have found out the hard way through ASA rulings.

Fear not, we can help to heal your advertising woes using the holistic CAP Code Method detailed below from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

HOLD EVIDENCE FOR TREATMENT CLAIMS

We understand that the holistic nature of many CAM therapies can make it more challenging to gather the types of evidence the ASA would expect marketers to substantiate their claims in their ads (CAP Code rule 12.1). However, the fact remains that the ASA will expect marketers of CAM therapies to hold clinical trial evidence that can produce statistically signi cant results to support their objective treatment claims.

TREATMENT CLAIMS CAN BE IMPLIED AS WELL AS DIRECT

Marketers should be aware that treatment claims can be both direct and implied. The ASA will always view ads from the perspective of the consumer. For example, a claim to “help” someone with a named medical condition could be understood by consumers to mean the therapy can ameliorate symptoms. Other claims/images in an ad about the therapy may also frame references to medical conditions as treatment claims.

CONSIDER USING MORE SUBJECTIVE, SENSORIAL CLAIMS

On occasions, a therapy may be so new or unusual that it may not have any signi cant clinical trials to support the claims marketers wish to make. That doesn’t always mean that references to medical conditions are prohibited, but claims should be restricted to the sensorial/ subjective bene ts.

DON’T DISCOURAGE ESSENTIAL MEDICAL TREATMENTS

Evidence aside, claims to help with some more serious medical conditions could be considered to discourage essential medical treatment (CAP Code rule 12.2). These 2023 rulings on hyperbaric oxygen chambers were found to discourage essential medical treatment for conditions including long COVID, chronic health conditions and depression, because the advertisers had not provided evidence to demonstrate that treatment had been overseen by a suitably quali ed health professional. This CAP Guidance includes a nonexhaustive list of medical conditions to which this position applies.

DON’T FORGET THAT THE RULES ALSO APPLY TO CLAIMS IN TESTIMONIALS

Although we recognise that claims in testimonials are intended to re ect an individual’s experience, those testimonials may still imply that a therapy is e cacious – especially if it refers to speci c health conditions. Unless clinical evidence is held to support direct and implied treatment claims, marketers are encouraged to use testimonials that refer to subjective or sensorial aspects of their experience. Wellness Coaching

Do you feel a deep calling to help others live healthier, more fulfilling lives? If so, becoming a wellness coach might be the perfect career for you

With more people prioritizing their wellbeing, the demand for wellness coaches is skyrocketing. And there’s no reason why you can’t turn your passion for wellness into a meaningful and rewarding profession.

But where do you begin? What does it take to guide others toward healthier lifestyles while building a thriving career for yourself? In this guide, you’ll learn exactly what a wellness coach does, why this field is growing, and the actionable steps you can take to start your journey today.

Here are the steps you can take to build a successful career as a wellness coach.

DEVELOP A STRONG FOUNDATION IN HEALTH AND WELLNESS

To become a successful wellness coach, you need a solid understanding of key health and wellness concepts. Dive into topics like nutrition, learning how different foods and eating patterns impact the body. Explore exercise science to grasp the principles behind physical activity and fitness.

Gain knowledge about stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing exercises. Understand the science of behaviour change, including theories like the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing.

OBTAIN A WELLNESS COACH CERTIFICATION

A wellness coach certification can set you apart in this growing field, ensuring you have the expertise and credibility to attract clients.

Accredited programs, such as those recognized by the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) or the International Coach Federation (ICF), offer comprehensive training in:

• Coaching skills.

• Ethics and professional standards.

• Business development. When researching certification options, consider:

• Program length: Some programs take a few months, while others may require a longer commitment.

• Curriculum: Look for programs that cover a broad range of topics, including health behaviour change, motivational interviewing, and wellness strategies.

• Practical experience: Ensure the program includes hands-on coaching opportunities, such as role-play exercises or supervised practicums. Many certifications can be completed online, offering flexibility, while others may have in-person components for a more immersive experience.

GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

As a new wellness coach, you need real-world experience to refine your skills and build credibility. Start by seeking opportunities to work with clients, even if it’s

on a volunteer basis or with friends and family. These initial experiences will help you practice assessing clients’ needs, developing personalized plans, and addressing challenges during the coaching process.

Internships or part-time roles at health clubs, wellness centres, or corporate wellness programs can also provide invaluable hands-on experience. These settings allow you to learn the nuances of coaching in professional environments, giving you insights into what works best when guiding different types of clients.

While gaining experience, make sure to:

• Track your clients’ progress and celebrate their milestones.

• Document your coaching sessions to create a portfolio of case studies and testimonials. This portfolio will showcase your ability to help clients achieve their goals, making you more appealing to future clients or employers.

Remember, being a good coach isn’t just about knowledge, it’s about communication, empathy, and motivation. Practice active listening to truly understand your clients’ needs, and ask open-ended questions to explore their deeper motivations and obstacles. Providing a safe, non-judgmental space helps clients feel supported and encouraged throughout their wellness journey.

Finally, reflect on your performance as you gain experience. Seek feedback from clients and mentors to identify areas for improvement and continuously work on your coaching skills. Every interaction is a chance to grow and enhance the service you provide to your clients.

DEFINE YOUR NICHE AND TARGET AUDIENCE

As you gain experience and develop your unique approach, consider specializing in a particular area of wellness coaching. Defining your niche allows you to become an expert in a specific domain and attract clients who resonate with your focus. F

Your niche could revolve around factors like:

• Age group: Young adults, seniors, or new parents.

• Gender: Coaching programs tailored for women, men, or nonbinary individuals.

• Occupation: Corporate executives, athletes, or freelancers.

• Specific health concerns: Stress management, weight loss, or chronic illness management. When selecting your niche, reflect on your own passions, experiences, and areas of expertise. What aspects of wellness are you most knowledgeable and enthusiastic about? What types of clients do you feel most called to serve?

Conducting market research can also help you identify potential niches and assess the demand for specific wellness coaching services. Look for gaps in the market where you can offer unique value and differentiate yourself from competitors.

Once you’ve defined your niche, take time to deeply understand your target audiences’ needs, challenges and aspirations. Use these insights to create client personas – fictional profiles representing your ideal clients. These personas help you craft messaging, design coaching programs, and deliver services that resonate with your audience.

For example, if you choose to become a mindset coach, you’d focus on helping clients shift their thoughts and beliefs to align with their wellness goals. This niche requires a solid understanding of psychology, self-awareness, and behaviour-change strategies. As you define your niche and target audience, remember to remain flexible and open to evolving your focus as you gain experience and insights. Your specialty may naturally emerge as you work with more clients and discover where you excel as a coach.

DEVELOP YOUR COACHING PROGRAM AND PRICING

With your niche and target audience defined, it’s time to design your signature coaching program. A wellstructured program outlines your services, session format, and pricing, giving potential clients a clear understanding of what to expect when working with you.

Start by determining the length and frequency of your coaching sessions.

• Will you offer 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute sessions?

• How often will you meet with clients – weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly?

Consider your target audience’s preferences and needs when making these decisions.

Next, decide on the format of your coaching sessions. Will you provide one-on-one coaching, group coaching, or a combination of both? One-on-one sessions allow for personalized attention and deeper exploration of individual challenges, while group coaching fosters a supportive community and can be more affordable for clients.

As you design your program, create a framework that

guides clients through a transformative journey. Break down the coaching process into phases or milestones, each with specific objectives and activities. This structure helps clients understand the path to achieving their wellness goals and keeps them motivated along the way.

When it comes to pricing your coaching services, consider factors like:

• Your experience and credentials.

• The specific needs of your niche and target audience.

• The rates of other wellness coaches in your market. Researching market rates ensures your pricing is competitive while valuing your time and expertise. Consider offering coaching packages or membership plans to encourage long-term commitment from clients. Packages can include a set number of sessions over a specific timeframe, while membership plans provide ongoing support and resources for a monthly or annual fee. Tiered pricing is another option, allowing you to serve clients with different budgets and needs. For example:

• A basic package with limited one-on-one sessions.

• A mid-level package with additional support and resources.

• A premium package with exclusive perks and more frequent sessions.

As you develop your coaching program and pricing, prioritize transparency and value. Clearly communicate what’s included in each package or membership, and emphasize the benefits clients can expect from working with you.

Highlight your unique approach and the transformative results you’ve helped previous clients achieve.

Remember, your coaching program and pricing may evolve as you gain experience and refine your niche. Stay open to feedback from clients and adjust your offerings to better serve their needs and preferences.

ESTABLISH YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE

Your website serves as your virtual storefront, introducing potential clients to your services and establishing your credibility in the field. Invest in a professional website that clearly communicates your niche, coaching philosophy, and the transformative results you help clients achieve. Include Qualifications and certifications, client testimonials and success stories to build trust and inspire action and media features or speaking engagements to showcase your credibility and authority in the wellness space. Beyond your website, leverage social media platforms to expand your reach and engage with your target audience.

Safeguarding in the Complementary Health Sector

Safeguarding is essential in creating a safe and ethical practice environment that prioritizes the wellbeing of clients while supporting the professional standards of complementary therapy.

By establishing safeguarding measures, therapists can proactively identify and mitigate risks associated with their practice, reducing the likelihood of incidents that could harm clients or the therapist’s reputation.

THE ROLE OF SAFEGUARDING

We talk about creating safe spaces in wellness, but how do we actually do that when something feels off? When a client shares something confronting? When you know something’s not right, but you don’t know what to do?

As complementary therapists, we work closely – often intimately – with people who may be navigating trauma, instability, or unmet care needs. And yet, unlike teachers, GPs, or youth workers, most of us weren’t trained in what to do if something concerning comes up. That’s a gap we need to close. Because safeguarding isn’t about jumping in to save someone. It’s about:

• Knowing how to hold space without freezing

• Recognising risk without panicking

• Responding calmly, clearly, and compassionately

• And most of all, it’s about responsibility

Good intentions aren’t enough. We can’t say we offer “safe space” if we’re not equipped to recognise when someone’s safety is already at risk.

WHAT SAFEGUARDING LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE

Here’s what safeguarding actually looks like in a massage or wellness setting:

A clear policy

Even a one-page plan for what you’ll do if you’re concerned about a client makes a huge difference.

A few key contacts

You don’t need a hotline memorisedbut knowing where to look, who to ask, or where to refer makes it easier to act.

Supportive, confident language

You don’t need to fix it. Try: “Thank you

for sharing. That sounds really hard. Let’s figure out the best next step.”

Firm boundaries

Structure and clarity make people feel safe. That’s especially true for those with a history of boundary violations.

Knowing your role

You’re not here to diagnose or rescue. You’re here to care, to notice, and to respond when something falls outside your scope.

And if you don’t know where to start?

That’s okay. Here’s a quick and easy way for you to begin:

THE CARE APPROACH

At Neuro Training School, we teach a simple, trauma-informed safeguarding framework we call CARE.

CCommunicate

Listen with respect. Let your client know they’re being taken seriously – not rushed, not judged, not dismissed.

AAcknowledge

Validate what they’ve shared. Even if you’re unsure what it means, your calm presence makes a difference.

RRecord

Write down what was said. Keep it factual. Keep it safe. Store it securely.

EEscalate

Know your next step.

Whether it’s contacting a safeguarding team, referring to crisis services, or seeking supervision – don’t carry it alone.

Safety isn’t just a warm tone or a soft voice. It’s knowing what to do when someone shares something painful.

These aren’t just professional standards. They’re the foundation of real, inclusive care.

Because when we talk about inclusion in wellness – it has to include people who are vulnerable. And if it includes vulnerable people – it has to include safeguarding.

Safety isn’t just a warm tone or a soft voice. It’s knowing what to do when someone shares something painful. It’s having a plan when something doesn’t feel right. It’s understanding how to hold space without freezing – and how to respond without overstepping. That’s not just intuition. It’s training. And in most complementary therapy education, that training is missing. No, we don’t need to become social workers, but we do need to become practitioners who are prepared, not just in technique, but in care. That’s how we raise the standards, that’s how we honour the people who trust us and that’s how we create safer, more inclusive healing spaces, together.
