Born out of passion for shotgun sports, the new Blaser FBX is the perfect shotgun for a place on the podium.
The new Blaser FBX has an air of confidence about it, thanks in no small part to its modern Fat Body receiver in combination with the Sporting foreend and DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating on all visible steel surfaces in elegant black.
When you level the FBX, you already feel the optimized geometry of the stock and the pistol grip. They then play out their advantage when the shot is fired. The steep pistol grip already cushions part of the recoil and reduces the impulse felt at the shoulder. The large contact surface of the recoil pad results in a noticeably less felt recoil. The receiver guarantees optimal balance and stability.
But the Blaser FBX also impresses on the inside. The sophisticated barrel geometry ensures maximum velocity of the shot, an optimized pattern and recoil reduction. The barrels are available either with new extended thin-walled multi chokes or fixed chokes. The ventilated side rail improves barrel cooling and reduces the weight of the barrels, which also improves the balance of the shotgun.
The integrated IBS® anti-double system and the
ejection ball system EBS® ensure reliable function and a fast shot sequence. The receiver in monocoque design with its detachable trigger unit allows for easy maintenance, which is particularly appreciated during a competition.
The integrated balancer systems in the fore- and rear-end are also ingenious. They allow each shooter to adjust the weight distribution of the FBX precisely to his needs. The low center of mass enables a parallel movement of the shotgun without delay.
With the certainty of holding a perfectly adjusted shotgun, the shooter can concentrate 100 percent on the shot and call for the clay.

Cockett Farm are delighted to announce the introduction of Registered shoots to its 2025 calendar.
Cockett Farm has been operating a shooting ground as part of the family farm since 1982. Whilst a largely unknown venue to a lot of competition Sporting shooters, this is a longawaited addition by many regulars and they hope now to become an established venue for both competition and leisure shooters.
Featuring some excellent sporting topography with steep banks and gentle rolling hills combined with flatter, open ground and tree cover, Cockett Farm really does have a lot to offer in terms of target presentation, making for entertaining courses all year round.
All practice ranges – with the exception of Skeet – will remain open as usual on competition days as the Registered competitions will operate on a separate area of the ground.
At the heart of the whole operation is a small but committed, family run team. Husband and wife, Peter and Jane along with sons, Matthew and Edward strive to deliver the highest quality targets they can, keep no birds to an exceptionally low level and maintain the whole facility to a standard which is tough to beat. We have no doubt that this combination is what keeps us thriving as a practice ground however, we also believe we can soon be a must attend venue for registered sporting too!

Many congratulations to everyone who starts the year in the top 15 of the FITASC and ISSF World Rankings.
There are many in the shooting community who were hoping for Nathan Hales to be honoured in the New Year with an MBE for his gold medal in Paris 2024. I contacted British Shooting for any information/update, and the CEO, Hamish McInnes explained that his understanding from government is the policy for sporting honours has shifted. Previously (particularly since 2012) the winners of gold medals were automatically considered for an honour. The independent sport
committee has decided that it was time to move away from this automatic honour, and the emphasis is now on factors additional to performance, for example the athlete’s societal contribution.
He went on to say that this does not preclude
a sportsperson being honoured at any other time and hopes there will be honours for shooters in the near future, but it does indicate the new position that Olympic/ Paralympic medallists are not automatically honoured immediately after a Games. Wishing you all every success for the 2025 season, be it personal goals or medals.

Alex Sayer sings the praises of the semi-auto as a valuable addition to any shotgun cabinet.
Often overlooked but featuring in many cabinets is the humble and mechanically marvellous semi-automatic shotgun.
Originally the brainchild of John Moses Browning, the Browning Auto-5 was in mass production for nearly a century. One of Browning’s 128 patents, the Auto-5 was patented in 1900 (there were 10,000 in the first ever order and the last produced came off the line as recently as 1999. To celebrate this fantastically long production, having sold more than four million models, a thousand were made that boasted engravings of Mr Browning himself and the original shop owned by the Browning brothers. These were termed the ‘Final Tribute’ and had serial numbers beginning 2000FT.
Thoughts of a semi-auto today bring several manufacturers to mind. Benelli is one, and their guns are inertia driven, offering an industry leading 10-year guarantee off the shelf. Other makes and models that come immediately to mind are the Winchester SX4 and the full range of Beretta
A series, like the AL391Urika for example. Semi-autos serve an excellent purpose. They are reliable, cycle quickly and remain beloved by farmers, gamekeepers and landowners alike who would describe them as nothing more than “a tool”. This may be true but there is a hidden depth to the semi-auto concept, something we would all do well to explore.
There is a strong argument to say the overlooked semi-auto is the gun that greatest supports the shooters in the minority.
Aside from its offering on the clay ground, the practicality of a semi-auto in a pigeon hide or on the foreshore cannot be denied. In a hide there is no need to break the barrel, little to no risk of getting caught up in the net and the benefit of an extra shot is never lost on anyone having a day on the pigeons. The same applies to the wildfowler.
ow to celebrate the clay shooting benefits of the semi-auto and yes, thanks to the listening ears of the CPSA board members, semi-autos ARE permitted for DTL. There is a strong argument to say the overlooked semi-auto is the gun that greatest supports the shooters in the minority. The surprising lack of felt recoil makes them ideal for children. The right one, for example a Benelli SuperSport, is light and encouraging for a young shot. The careful loading and emphasis on safety and flags while on a shooting ground is yet another valuable lesson for the new shooter of any age.
Anyone carrying a historic or even recent injury will fi nd a semi auto a blessing in terms of regaining confi dence and reducing felt recoil. They really can be the thing to get you back out on the ground and, most importantly, keep you shooting. Furthermore, you don’t have to reduce your cartridge load which can affect hitting power. Some who temporarily move over to a semi-auto during recovery, don’t go back to an over-under. They fi nd the loading easier and enjoy the routine and sound effects of a semi-auto.
For women, the shimming system is ideal for comfortable shooting, and any gun shop worth its salt will offer a free gun fi t. As for choice, there is no shortage on the shelf today, but traditional semi-autos are still in high demand. Many of the modern manufacturers have a semi-auto offering but the classic Remington 1100 remains a famed and nostalgic version from yesteryear. There are a few still around but the owners will never let them go and have a cabinet full for various interchangeable parts. The Remington 1100 reminds us how popular the semi-auto was in the trap disciplines.
Beretta continue to release and re-release their A400 but many would like to see a return of the A303.
Benelli have thrown themselves into the semiauto market. Producing the limited edition and frankly spectacular Accademia and releasing numerous editions of the Super Sport, the company remains committed to this sector of the market. Equally, Beretta continue to release and re-release their A400 but many would like to see a return of the A303 – a dedicated sporter favoured by Mike Yardley who describes it as ‘a fabulous old gun’ and was seen using it on a skeet range at the end of January. He estimates that that particular Beretta has had more than 150,000 shots through it. The current and longstanding offering from Browning this side of the pond is the Maxus and more recently, the Maxus II. These are favoured by many a gamekeeper including Geoff Garrod.
other gun. They certainly aren’t temperamental. There are however differences in the mechanics. The complex and unbelievably ahead of its time, gas system is still used by Browning. Benelli developed an inertia system which, as you may expect, is recoil fed. Both systems recycle very quickly and both, contrary to many a myth, need cleaning.
The cartridge does the work in a gas-fed semi, it captures the spent gases after firing and recycles their energy to force back a piston that is held within the action. Back goes the bolt, out comes the case and the gun reloads automatically. The speed at which this happens is well over 800mph and the heavier the cartridge the greater the speed.
Despite the complicated mechanics of the semi-auto, they are not any less reliable than any
The recoil-fed models use the reverse motion of the recoil to activate a floating bolt that is forced against a comparatively large spring which then compresses. As the power and energy of the recoil movement dissipates, the spring is released. This returns the floating bolt to square one and the cartridge is ejected in a blur.
Semi-automatic shotguns have a great deal to commend themselves. They boast engineering achievements, flexibility in fit and reliability. Also, there is no shortage of choice or finish. There is everything on the shelf from carbon fibre to marshland scenes to high grade walnut. Many are designed as a sensible choice for the clay ground. So next time you are introducing someone to our sport, don’t rule out the semi-auto. They really do have quite a lot going for them.
We spoke to David White from Long Acre Shooting School.
QHow did you get into shooting/the industry?
A: I got into shooting air rifles as a child with my dad before progressing into rough shooting and clay shooting.
Back in 2005 I was shooting at East Barnett Shooting Ground in London, where I became a committee
member and found myself helping and advising lots of shooters on their approach to clay targets. This is where my now wife Tracy told me I should do this professionally, and I looked into doing a coaching course.
19 , but he sadly passed away a few years back. My family and I then had the opportunity to start our own chapter at Long Acre and we are now approaching our first anniversary.
Three years later I got my first shooting accreditation, which allowed me to work at numerous clay grounds across London, Essex, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire dreaming like most shooters of one day owning my own ground.
QWhen did the ground open and what makes it special?
A: The ground was originally owned and run by the great Sam Grice since
We are a family business and since having taken over, have added a practice Sporting layout to the ground, with an undercover Sportrap set up, where we recently have added glow clays on a riday evening.
We are constantly adding to the ground and also have an undercover air rifle range in the woods.
Being family run, we like to think of ourselves as a very welcoming and friendly shoot, where people can come and socialise with friends.
Q
What disciplines/ facilities/events do you offer around the grounds?
A: We have English Sporting and Sportrap clays, as well as an air rifle range, a small clubhouse where we offer refreshments – some say we do the best burger around!
years of coaching, these include:
• CPSA plus BASC safety officer City and guildslearning through coaching
We offer corporate events, team building, stag and Hen parties, have-a-go, and will be hosting our third air ambulance charity shoot this summer. We also offer safety courses with a certificate which shows new applicants that safety comes first.
Q Have you won any awards and accreditations over the years?
A: I have accumulated many ualifications over the last 1
In 19 9 the Skeet towers were put in, as was the 20-meter Trap tower. The ground was run as a oneto-one shooting school for over 30 years.
Since I took over we have added English Sporting practice clay targets in and around the wooded area. We have also just added undercover Sportrap in the main arena.
Q
What’s the clay shooting like in your area?
A: There is a variety of small and large clay grounds in and around the area such as the stunning Mile Bottom Simulated Game Shoot owned by Richard Clarke, further afield we have Cambridge Gun club, Eriswell Lodge and High Lodge.
QHave you got any events planned in 2024?
A: We have our annual East Anglia air ambulance charity shoot coming up in June/ uly check website for dates.
QIs there anything we have missed, that you feel should be included in an article about your ground?
A: We offer club memberships in both clays
• IPSC shotgun certificate
• Guild of Shooting instructors
• BASC continued professional development
• BASC shooting coach certificate
• BASC Approved witness safe Shot
• BASC shotgun awareness trainer
• BASC Wood pigeon awareness course trainer.
Q
How has the ground developed over the years?
A: The ground was started in 19 when all the mud mounds (sound and safety barriers) were installed and trees planted in the small wooded area.
1. Listen and take on board to what your shooting coach tells you.
2. Pick a method that suits you and stick to that method and keep calm.
3. Find a gun that fits regardless of price. practice, practice, practice.
and air rifle, please see our website for more details.
We run a field tech card system so solo shooting is available.
Private lessons mean private! you have the entire ground to yourself –beginners and experienced shooters welcome. We are seeing more and more women shooters that like the fact that they are the only ones with me on the ground during a lesson, taking the pressure away of being watched.
To keep our ground as beautiful as possible, we are fibre wad only.

Sharing pictures and personal news online can be a great way to promote everything we love about clay shooting, but there are some important caveats, as Mark Williams explains.
Facebook and Instagram have become a big part of our daily lives, and for clay shooters, social media is a great way to spread the word about the sport’s multiple benefits in terms of pure enjoyment, personal achievement, camaraderie and maybe even Olympic glory. Facebook groups also help shooters connect, swap advice, and stay updated.
But, as readers will already be aware, there are potential stumbling blocks in
While it can be tempting to rise to the bait sometimes, there is no value in entering into any online debate that has already crossed the barrier into rudeness, harassment or intimidation. Of course, there is always room for rational debate and for highlighting all the positives of being involved in clay shooting. But the moment things look like they might turn unpleasant just leave it – there is nothing to be gained from engaging in irrational online arguments. It’s far better to make your point and leave it there. And, as your mum might have said: “If you haven’t got anything nice to say, then it’s better to say nothing at all.”
the infinite online world. An image of a shotgun or a comment about shooting shared quickly without full consideration can sometimes create the wrong impression, just because it has been taken out of context. Hostile reactions can lead to unsightly online spats in an arena which can seem as unaccountable as the Wild West sometimes.
And it s that false sense of unaccountability which is part of the problem. Because the truth is that anything we post on social media is effectively there in perpetuity, whether we like it or not. This is why caution is so important online, and not just for the good of the sport.
Without realising it we all create an online identity and it’s very important to be cautious about what that identity looks like. As you will see below, government guidelines have made it very clear that police forces have the mandate to explore our social media activity when issuing Shotgun Certificates.
It’s vital that we make sure our posts reflect the sport we cherish so dearly in a positive and responsible way.
Images and videos are incredibly powerful tools for communication, and the global phenomenon of Instagram highlights the impact of visual content for personal and business use. For the clay shooting community, the images we share play a significant role in how the sport is perceived. This means it’s vital that we make sure our posts reflect the sport we cherish so dearly in a positive and responsible way.
Social media allows us to share moments or thoughts instantly, but it’s important to pause and think before posting. Once you click the share button, your content can be seen across the world, from Argentina to Australia, and Canada to Cameroon, in the time it takes to think “I wonder what Buenos Aires is like at this time of year”.
Images will resonate easily with fellow shooters who understand the context. However, if your social media includes people who are unfamiliar with clay shooting, a lack of context can sometimes lead to misconception. A quick caption explaining the context can go a long way in avoiding misunderstandings.
Something else to be aware of is the government Statutory Guidance to the police for issuing Shotgun Certificates. In section 2.48 this states: “Chief officers should consider conducting an open-source check of the applicant’s social media presence and activity. The purpose of this is to establish whether the applicant is openly and repeatedly expressing views, or sympathising with views, which may suggest that their access to firearms would be inappropriate or unsafe. Police forces must respect the individual’s right to freedom of speech, but if there is any indication of a possible propensity to violence, illegality or emotional volatility, these should be considered by the police when considering whether the applicant is fit to hold a firearms certificate.”
Food for thought for all clay shooters who use social media but ultimately the advice remains the same: think twice before you post anything and ask yourself what you want to achieve with the post? If you aren’t entirely sure, then it’s probably best not to click on that share button.
Before sharing a photo or video, imagine how someone you know with limited knowledge of clay shooting might interpret it. This can help to ensure you provide a positive insight and make
people think: “That looks fun – I’d like to try it.”
Social media is an excellent platform to celebrate clay shooting and share our sport with the world. However, we should always consider the perspective of someone who has no prior knowledge of FITASC, Olympic Trap, over-unders and all the other jargon we take for granted.
By sharing with care and consideration, you can help demystify clay shooting, highlight everything we love about it, engage a wider audience and maybe even encourage some new recruits.
BERETTA S688
RRP from £3,450 gmk.co.uk
Late last year Beretta launched their first new entry level gun into the sporting shotgun sector since the introduction of the 686 back in the 1990’s. Could this gun be the next modern classic from one of the biggest names in the world of gunmakers I m always excited when told about a Beretta gun coming to review for the pages of Pull! and the simple reason for that is that without exception they are always great guns, fun to shoot and top quality. When
I heard about the concept of the my interest was even more heightened. The entry level section of the market is congested and somewhat of a minefield and I was surprised that such an esteemed gunmaker would be investing in this area. But, when you then stop and think about it more, why wouldn t they I still think of the as a new gun, years
fly by uickly and when researching this review, I was horrified to realise that it was over 0 years ago now that it hit the market So, it s perfect timing to refresh that part of the Beretta offering.
irst off, let s be clear that entry level here is not the £500 offerings from Turkey but more the budget end of those that shoot regularly and well enough to invest in a decent gun
walnut and that stability is undoubtedly suited to a clay gun, no warping, bending or scratching/damage to be found here. The lack of oil
The stock on the 688 is based upon the 694 stock and features the same palm swell, it’s very comfortable in the hand and easy to shoot.
to enjoy their sport. es, that is around k these days sadly. Walk around your local gunshop and you will soon realise how much gun costs have increased over the last decade or so.
Upon delivery the 688 gives you everything you have come to expect from Beretta, branded ABS case, multi choke kit and tools etc. Open the case and things change dramatically. irst off, the is unashamedly an out and out competition gun, it has a laminate stock rather than
fi nished walnut also means you can treat this gun as harshly as you want to, and it will never show signs of wear and tear. The dark coloured laminate gently blends into the matt black action where it contrasts with the bright orange of the 688 numbers on each side and this is repeated again on the base of the action along with the Beretta trident. It looks modern, it looks great, and it looks ready for business! To continue the competition focused theme the word “Performance is embossed on both sides of the action and runs alongside a diagonal accent in the action that looks very smart indeed. The action of the feels wide in your hands
and also when looking at it, it’s a feature that makes the gun stand out. Loading is effortless as it feels as though there is so much width at the breech end of the barrels.
Now on to shooting the 688 – I took on a 100-target Sporting layout at Ian Coley’s and the gun performed admirably. The stock on the 688 is based upon the 694 stock and features the same palm swell, it’s very comfortable in the hand and easy to shoot. The 688 features a new action that is heavier than others in their range and
incorporates a new top lever design and release pin for a smoother closing action. Whilst I’m not sure I noticed the smoother closing I did notice the weight of the gun. We tested the 32” barrel option and with the extended chokes (nicely coloured), new action and laminated wood it comes in at 3.75kg or just over 8 ¼ lbs in old money. It feels substantial and you can notice the weight, I like a heavy clay gun, so it suited me just fi ne, and my scores refl ected that. The 688 is no dead weight though, it swings and moves effortlessly. The B-fast weight system, adjustable stock and length of pull adjustment mean that you can set this gun up to your exact spec and liking. Once you have taken the time to do this you have an absolute machine in your hands!
We tested the 32” barrel option with the extended chokes.
Some other notable features include steelium barrels, 10 x 8 sporting rib and a nice matt fi nish just in front of the top lever that reduces glare when shooting in bright sunshine or hot weather. These are all great features and yes some of these you expect to see on a modern clay gun but let’s just take a moment to think about what the 688 is offering here. First, you are buying a Beretta, always a good investment as they hold their value, and you can always trade up easily when the time comes. Secondly, you are getting a dedicated competition gun packed full of features and encompassing the most cutting-edge design and technology with years of research and at a highly competitive price point.
After some quick research online dealers are offering the 688 for less than £3k even though the RRP is set at £3,495. For that money it is an absolute steal and surely will now be a trailblazer in entry level gun arena, but I don’t see the 688 as entry level, it shoots wonderfully and when set up it is every bit as good as guns that I have shot that cost two to three times as much. I do believe that we are witnessing the birth of a new legend in the world of clay guns!

by Dr John Martin, CPSA Chairman.
At 8.45am on 11 January, I was in Northampton’s car park, debating with Bob Meadows whether it was -6 or -3 degrees. Shortly after, in an even colder clubhouse, Northampton’s committee began the first county AGM of 202 . Glancing over at Bob as he tackled his McMuffin, I smiled to myself as it sunk in that it was the start of another year of championships.
202 , it is going to be our most successful year so far. Membership is stable, finances are sound, and our auditors have once again given us a clean bill of health, so we will move forward into 202 on our mission of providing you, our members, with premium opportunities to compete in all our disciplines, whilst making each Championship an event to remember.
But before pushing ahead into this coming year, let s glance back to 202 and some of the highlights which made that a year to remember too.
All our major championships in 202 were sold out within minutes – and in many cases we had to add additional days. Our Sponsorship base was even stronger than ever, allowing us to provide more prizes and more payouts for everyone taking part. And, of course, 202 was an Olympic year with athan Hales and Amber Rutter bringing home gold and silver respectively, but not forgetting Lucy Hall who came 14th in her first ever Olympics.
ENGLISH OPEN SPORTING
It all kicked off with five days of the English Open Sporting at Doveridge (as it then was). The weather was excellent, despite the torrential rain in the week running up to the event. It’s been many years since we held a Sporting championship at Doveridge and Clive and his team did not disappoint, opening a completely new range of stands especially for the competition.
Mark Winser took the English Open title on a score of 119, with Billy Baughan coming second on 118, and James Bradley-Day third on 117. With just 120 being the possible top score, none of the three finalists left much margin for error.
Ceyla Ismet and Lucy Earl tied on 10 in the Ladies championship, with Ceyla holding Lucy to second place by one clay following a shoot off. Emma Stacey took third place Overall after a shoot-off with Amy Easeman.
Charlie Faulds took the Junior High Gun on 10 , whilst Tristan Hockey and Kallum Burrell shot off for second and third place on scores of 10 , with Tristan holding Kallum to third place Overall. John Porter was awarded the Colts trophy on an impressive 114, with Connor Davis and Fern Lancaster coming second and third respectively.
Paul Foster took the Veterans High Gun on 112 with evin obling coming second and Matt Hance coming third on 110, whilst the Super Veterans trophy went to Steve Brightwell on 10 , with Peter Jarvis taking second place, and Patrick Dickman third.
Special thanks to Clive and his team for organising and running an exceptional English Open. And many of you will be pleased to know that Clive is staying on at, what is now Eaton Hall, so we can expect his exceptional input to our 202 calendar.
CSC hosted the English Open Skeet with Joe Clark and Tristan Hockey battling it out for the title in a shoot-off, having both shot 100 Straight in the competition itself. In the event oe scored 2 in the full round and Tristan 2 , giving oe the title and Tristan the Runner up trophy, with Bill Moussalli coming third on 99.
Membership is stable, finances are sound, and our auditors have given us a clean bill of health.
Isabel Russell came back into form to take the Ladies title on a score of 98 from Alison Coupe, who was Runner up on 9 and Hannah Gibson was third, also on 97, but was unavailable for a shootoff. unior High Gun unsurprisingly, went to Tristan Hockey on that 100 Straight, with Ethan Lord having to settle for second place on 99, whilst Sonny Bowman came a close third on 98.
Matthew Huxtable shot an impressive 9 to take the Colts High Gun, six clays ahead of Cameron Burr who came second, with Arthur Cutter third on . Veterans High Gun was awarded to the Skeet Doctor himself, Alan Warren on 99, after a shoot-off with John Dunn, in which Alan held 2 points on the full round to ohn s 2 . Brian Gibson came third on 9 . Alan also picked up the AA Class trophy and ohn the A Class. To make up for the whippersnappers edging him out of the overall title by one clay, Bill Moussalli took Super Veteran after holding Martin Brister to second place following a shoot-off, with Douglas Moore coming third on 98.
The 202 DTL Home International was hosted by Bywell Shooting Ground during a six-day marathon, incorporating the Home International, the Europeans the ICTS Worlds, and the British Open. The weather was glorious for the Home International and somewhat less so for the rest of the week. I don’t think I’ve ever worn thermals continuously for a full week during July
but, I may of course be mistaken. To list the results of all these competitions would take more space than I have for this report. Suffice to say the England teams and individuals fully returned the trust placed in them as representatives of our nation and of our sport.
August saw the British Open Skeet at ottingham and District. ames Attwood, Rob Denoon, and Lee Downing all shot 100 Straight to go through to a shoot off for the three main places. Lee sadly succumbed to the pressure of the additional full round and took third place on a shoot off score of 21. ames and Rob both went through to sudden death which was, as it turns out, uite sudden, only lasting two pairs with ames taking the British Open title by two clays in the shoot off, and Rob Denoon taking Runner up of the match.
Ladies High Gun went to Scottish shooter Becky ing, on 99, with Hannah Gibson taking second place on 9 , and Samantha Rhodes third on 9 after a shoot off. unior High Gun went to Charlie aulds on 9 after holding ian Maher to second place in a shoot off, by one clay. Sonny Bowman was third on 9 . Richard aulds was rewarded for getting up at the crack of dawn to take Charlie to ottingham with the AA trophy on 99, after a gruelling shoot off, of one full round and 1 sudden death. Connor Davis took a commanding lead in the Colts championship to win the title on 99, with Matthew Huxtable having to settle for Runner up for the second year in succession. ate Peerless took the third place Colts award after a shoot off. Lincolnshire shooter Andrew Harvy, held off David Billington by a single clay to take the Veterans title on 99, with Paul Stokes taking third place on 9 . Paul allon was awarded the Super Veterans trophy on a score of 9 , leaving Doug Moore and Bob Tucker to shoot off for second and third place on 9 . Doug held Bob to a single clay lead, straighting the full round and securing the runner up position.
E. . Churchill s Swinton Estate was the venue for the 202 British Open in August. ive solid days of shooting in fantastic weather with 9 Shooters taking part. As ever, E. . s organised an exemplary competition. Sadly, I missed the final day as I was being ferried home on a low loader, courtesy of the RAC. Ritchard aulds, Martin Myers, and Mark Winser lead the field on the final day with
Richard going on to win the Super inal and the High Gun trophy on 9 19. Mark Winser, winner of the English Open earlier in the year, pulled back one clay to level up with Martin and force a shoot off for second and third place. Martin held Mark to third place by one clay to become the Runner up of the championship, with Mark coming third Overall.
Scottish shooter Rebecca Mc en ie took the Ladies High Gun on a score of 2 with Hannah Gibson, one week after shooting Skeet for England in the Home International, taking the Runner up Ladies pri e on , with Charlotte erwood coming third on .
The unior High Gun went to osh Poyser on , with Anthony Clark taking Runner up on 2, and Todd Hitch taking third place on 1. Colt High Gun went to ohn Porter on 2, with Brad Taylor securing second place on and Connor Davis just missing out by one point to take third place on . George Digweed MBE, was Veteran High Gun on after a shoot off with Andy Moon, leaving Mark Marshall to take third place on . Super Veterans High Gun went to ottingham shooter Martin Doughty on an impressive , with Glen Hunt Runner up on and Peter arvis third on 2.
The success of all our major Championships as well as our England teams in 202 , gives me the confidence to predict the coming season will be the best one yet. Our sponsor pool is stronger than ever with Eley Hawk and SWATCOM both signing up for an additional three years. ew for 202 we will be adding Teague and Starkey Outdoors Pilla as Championship sponsor and Winchester will be joining us for the World Sporting at Churchill s in uly.
In April, Steve Lovatt will host the English Open Super Sporting at Garlands, with Eaton Hall organising the English and British Open All Round the following week. or the first time since I can t remember, Ian Coley will be hosting a major championship by organising the English Open Sportrap for us down in Cheltenham. The following week will see the English Open Skeet move from its 202 venue at CSC to Eaton Hall and if you re planning to shoot it, I look forward to seeing you there. Also in May, High Lodge will be organising the five days of the English Open Sporting so you can spend your time shooting Clays amongst the trees although, I m sure if ohn Bidwell gets his way, there ll be a few stands on the golf course too.
202 is our turn to again host the Worlds Sporting, at E. . Churchill. Eight days of Shooting over a stunning variety of courses. We will also be introducing our first British Open Super Sporting at the Worlds, just to keep you interested. This year will also see the 100th British Open Sporting which, following their success at hosting the English open last year, Eaton Hall will be doing us the honour of staging and supporting this significant event. To do justice to the Centenary we have many things planned and, to see what they are you ll need to make sure you re part of the experience. ou won t be disappointed, trust me, I m a Doctor.
In addition to our major championships, we will also be attending the Game air at Ragley Hall in uly, as well as the British Shooting show at the EC in ebruary. On 2 March the RA will be providing us with a venue to host our 202 AGM. It will take place at the RA Bisley Shooting Ground. There will be Zoom options to take part remotely and I look forward to as many of you joining us to take part in the important process of governance of the CPSA.
Once again it s important that I take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and endurance during the last few years. At the same time, I know that without uestion we wouldn t be as fortunately placed as we are today if it wasn t for the dedication, commitment and downright determination to succeed, which everyone at H has shown over the last few years. I have been a director for over nine years now and I can truthfully say that we have the best team in place at H that we have ever had. They are already ahead of the curve and have everything in place to guarantee this year will knock your socks off.
And finally, I ought to thank my fellow Directors for all the voluntary work they do on the Board and behind the scenes. I could commiserate with them for much of the hassle they receive as representative of the CPSA but, we all know what we signed up for, so suck it up guys and I look forward to working with you in 202 .
So that s it from me for another year. I hope to meet very many of you during the season. eep an eye out for me and the Hound at the grounds and come and have a chat. Much of 202 is still in the future. I have seen our plans for that future and, to mirror a slogan from the 1990s, The uture s Bright, the uture s Orange

Lead in Ammunition update from CPSA
The Health and Safety Executive have published their final opinion on lead ammunition and confirmed their proposed five year transition period for the placing on the market and use of lead shot cartridges. Please note this transition period only comes into place once the Government has enacted the law. The CPSA have been working with HSE, fellow associations and BASC throughout this consultation process. We are reviewing the full HSE opinion published on 1 December in detail and working with relevant government departments as this process moves forward. (The full dossier is available on the CPSA website . In early 2025 we will be setting up a working group of CPSA board members, ground operators and partners from the gun trade, to plan this potential key change for our sport in the coming years. We will keep you, the members, updated and if you have any questions, please contact us on the following dedicated email lead@cpsa.co.uk

It s good to see familiar names in all classes, putting in good scores despite the weather.
Our team managers are busy trying to organise and schedule our county championship events as we speak, and we will update you all as soon as possible. The season seems to get busier every year and county events are sometimes diffi cult to slot around majors, so we ask for patience as the calendar comes together.
By the time this is published we will have had our AGM and our charity fundraiser shoot. We will update you on our committee and team managers in our next issue.

Welcome all to the 2025 competition season
Due to the publishing date of this article the new Shropshire committee for 2025 will be posted in the April edition of pull magazine and the Shropshire Facebook page after the AGM on 22 February.
One important omission from late 2024 was Shropshire shooter Trevor Lewis’ Silver medal at the World Helice Championship in Egypt, which can be summed up best in Trevor’s own words, in a kindly written report of his adventure and great achievement:
“I Just got back yesterday from the World Helice Championships in Cairo. Summary of my performance: This was the best sporting week of a lifetime for me. This was my first truly International Championship. Presidents Cup, a warmup event for the championships, top three finish in Veterans. Only a trophy for first.
and Selections will be arranged. Unfortunately, some of these will clash with other events which cannot be helped due to a packed fixture list. Hopefully we will see you all at this year’s shoots.

“Egyptian Grand Prix joint ninth in Veterans, alongside my teammate Steve Cole who was Runner-up in the World Championship after a shoot-off.
“African Continental Championship joint 12th in Veterans, alongside Piero Donato (Egypt) who came third in Veterans World Championship and tied with Jean-Jacques Vila a former French Rugby League International.
“World Helice Championships joint fourth in Veterans just two behind Peiro Donato. World Helice Team Championship Veterans, Silver Medal, with Steve Cole and my other teammate Paul Colley who also tied for fourth in the individual event. Veteran World Helice Champion 2024 was Aldo Vignoli from Italy (he and Steve Cole were just three ahead of me, and Paul Colley, after three-days of competition). The Overall World Helice Champion 2024 was a Junior, Andrew William Shahidi who only dropped a single target. Young and fearless.
“To put the level of competitors into context, the Americans fielded a strong team (but not in Veterans) that included the Ladies 2021 Olympic Skeet, Olympic Champion, Amber Marie English, who scored one target less than me and finished in joint 110th in the Open category. I finished joint 91st in the Open category. Losing a few targets at this level drops you a lot of places.
“The Egyptians did a wonderful job hosting the championships, at a club considered the best in the world for shooting Helice, just wish I could shoot there every week!”

Staffordshire retain Lyalvale Shield
Staffordshire have again won the prestigious West Midlands Area Lyalvale Shield, the premier team trophy, contested by the seven counties in the region. Points are awarded at each of the Senior team Inter-Counties events over the season.
In the Seniors, Staffordshire won Gold in All Round, ABT, English Skeet, and UT, Silver in English Sporting, DTL, and Helice, Bronze in Olympic Trap. These results also helped us to retain the Gun Up Trophy. We also achieved some excellent results in the Veterans, Ladies, and Juniors categories.
A big thank you to all team managers who ran championship events and put the squads together. Thanks also to our sponsors Solware, Lyalvale Express and most importantly, to everyone who shot for Staffordshire in 2024.

After a rather cold, wet and windy start to 2025, it is good to see that several of you have braved the poor weather conditions and been out and about around the grounds. Boxing Day 2024, NDGC
What a fantastic way to shake off the Christmas indulgence! The forecast promised clear skies, but instead, we were met with a thick mist that made for some tricky shooting conditions. However, that didn’t deter the eager competitors, and squads were rolling out from 9am, ready for the challenge.
Early scores in the high 80s suggested a strong competition, and many expected a high 90s total to take the win. But as the mist lingered, it became clear that conditions weren’t going to make things easy. Kevin Warner and Neil Orr looked poised to claim the day with a solid 91/100, but in the very last squad, Rob Dennon dug deep, producing an excellent 92 100 to snatch victory.
Our thanks to John Martin for updating us on the events of the past year and what changes we can expect in the future. Topics included the 2024 Olympics successes, lead shot, shotgun and firearms certificate fee increases and the new performance framework for firearms licensing teams. He also discussed the number of CPSA members, compared to the number of shotgun license holders and competition shooters. Although membership numbers are slightly down, they compare favourably with those of other sporting associations. The drop in numbers may be in part due to issues with the granting of licenses, which the firearms licensing teams are trying to address by standardising their procedures, improving training and reducing waiting times.
The East Midlands CPSA has now published dates for the Regional and Inter-Counties Championships. These can be found on their website and Facebook page. Dates for the County Championships will be published as soon as they are known. Please keep a lookout for them on our website and social media pages and make a note of them in your diaries. We look forward to seeing you at these championships and wish you all the best for the coming season.
Neil Orr secured the Veteran High Score, while Kat Hunt impressed with a fantastic performance to claim the Ladies’ High Gun. The Junior title went to Harry Minkley, rounding off a superb day of shooting.
As the evening set in and the last mince pies disappeared, we wrapped up another brilliant Boxing Day shoot. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us – we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! And, as always, a special thanks to the team at Nottingham for making it all possible. Full results and presentation pictures can be found below.

Happy New Year! I thought I'd start the season with a roundup of the events and achievements from last year.
In 2024 there were competitions in all 14 disciplines. Most were held at the Northampton Shooting Ground but others were hosted elsewhere notably East Yorkshire Shooting Ground, Rugby & District Trap Club, and Sporting Targets. Entries for 2024 were quite a way up on the previous year – 213 against 147 is a whopping rise. Notable increases were in the All Round and Sporting. The Olympic Skeet competition managed to get into double figures which must be a first in living memory! Sadly, the addition of 'If You're In: You May Win' prize to the DTL competition didn't see an increase in the entry: there was a fall. This was probably due to the awful weather for that fixture.
After months of intense competition, the Down the Line Winter Series came to an epic conclusion, bringing a fantastic season to a close. A massive thank you to everyone who took part – we’ve seen it all over the past few months: rain, snow, wind, and even a little sunshine, but most importantly, we’ve had fun!
A special mention goes to Webley & Scott and Hull Cartridge Company for their generous sponsorship of the series. Their support has been invaluable in making this event such a success.
Our Overall High Gun Winner was none other than Allen Warren, whose consistency throughout the series was nothing short of remarkable. But the real drama unfolded in the Super Shoot Off, where eight finalists battled it out for the top prize. And in true sporting fashion, anything can happen – Pete Dale, a C-Class shooter, held his nerve to claim victory, walking away with a Webley & Scott 912XS shotgun! Nerves of steel right there!
Exciting news Cockett arm will soon be hosting CPSA Registered Sporting events, with the first competition expected to take place this April. Make sure to give them your support as they kick-start their journey into registered events.
In 2024 the winners of the 'If You're In: You May Win' prize cartridges were: All Round Harry Parton, Sporting split between Paul Webb and Fred McVarish, Skeet Penny Spademen, Sportrap Nigel Richards, DTL John Woolacott. There were six free competition entries for Junior and Colt shooters.
In total 77 people entered eligible competitions for the Supreme Championship title. All were listed on the leaderboard on the county website. The 2024 Supreme Champions are Harry Parton Junior, Isabel Russell Lady, Bob Meadows Veteran, and Jo Smith Senior.
I am pleased to say that last year the county entered a team for every regional Inter-County competition, and we came fourth overall. Many thanks to the Team Managers Neil Faulkner, Mick Russell, Keith Smith, and Luke Passmore for their sterling work in gathering together teams for these events. In total 38 people shot for the county, some for multiple disciplines. The thank you prize of £50 went to Nigel Etheridge. All entrants

With plenty of prize money and fantastic prizes, including rewards for Juniors and Colts, this is set to be an event to remember!
were also awarded a box of 25 cartridges. Thank you to everyone.
In the wider view, county shooters saw success within the region. Isabel Russell was Runner-up in the Ladies Skeet whilst Sonny Bowman took the regional Junior Skeet title. Liam Crabb was Junior Olympic Trap champion. Henry Collins came third in the Sporting competition. In the Universal Trench competition, Sue Bate won the Ladies category whilst Phil Rowley was third Overall.
County shooters were visible and successful on the National stage. Isabel Russell won the English Open Skeet title and Sonny Bowman was third in the Juniors. Jo Smith and Henry Collins were in the successful regional team at the British Open Sporting competition.
On National Teams – Sue Bate was selected for the England Ladies ABT team. Leon Gill was a Senior shooter of the England DTL team that won their Home International competition. Leon Gill, along with new cap John Spademan, were on the England Skeet team that won

Thanks to everyone that joined us at the 2025 AGM – this is always a great opportunity for good conversation about our sport and to update everyone about the 2025 Championships and our future plans. Thank you to Eriswell Lodge for hosting this event and for keeping us all fed and watered.
As always, at the AGM, it was great to see the enthusiasm, loyalty, and passion that Suffolk shooters show for their sport and their County. And, as always, it is great to see the wide range of shooters that Suffolk has within it. Attending this year we had Eric Chapman, who must have been shooting for 60+ years and is still out each weekend smashing his way to the top levels of the scoreboards. At the same time, we had Henry Lungley, who is a superb young shooter that is excelling at FITASC and Sporting and is setting his sights on Olympic Skeet success.
The Championship dates for 2025 have now been agreed and we will be
their Home International competition as was Junior Sonny Bowman. Andrew Lea was again on the England Olympic Skeet team helping in their Home International success. Congratulations to all county shooters for their success in 2024.
The Awards Evening was held at The Overstone Manor Hotel with attendance in the 30s and everyone had a lovely time.
This year the county committee will again focus on delivering county championships for all the disciplines and will work towards encouraging more shooters to engage with championships as well as registered shoots. Suggestions for ways to increase the enjoyment of shooting are always welcome so please talk with Marty, Roy or Pete with any ideas.
By the time you read this the 202 fixtures will probably be mostly arranged so take a look at the county website or Facebook pages for details.
updating everyone with the full list of dates as soon as possible. Please keep an eye out on our Facebook/Instagram pages and at your local ground for the dates. Last year was a superb year for Suffolk Championships and we are sure the 2025 will be equally exciting.
As with all of Suffolk events it is the great team effort between the Suffolk grounds, the referees and the competitors that make these events so enjoyable. The grounds put on excellent targets and make sure everything runs smoothly, the shooters loyally support these events come rain or shine and the referees make sure the competitions run effectively, fairly and make sure that everyone enjoys themselves.
It is a great partnership between the grounds/competitors and referees, and in Suffolk, we do it so well. Everyone involved works and competes to the highest levels and the combination of skills is something the Suffolk can be proud of and should strive to protect and help to flourish.
The first signs of Spring are starting to show and it’s time to get ready for the events to come in 2025. Whether your training, practising or competing,
REFER A FRIEND AND YOU COULD BOTH WIN A BROWNING B525 SHOTGUN EACH!
JUST REMEMBER TO GET THE NEW MEMBER TO GIVE YOUR CPSA NUMBER WHEN THEY JOIN!

We are excited to announce the launch of our new CPSA friends & family membership referral scheme for 2025 commencing 1st January. Refer a friend or family member who successfully joins as a Full or Clubman member and you will both be entered into a fantastic prize draw at the end of 2025, to win a Browning B525 shotgun each!
T’s & C’s apply.
we hope you can get out and start to prepare for the 2025 season. As a Committee, we are working on initiatives that we can do to assist Suffolk members as much as possible. Hopefully, we will put on some training days when Suffolk shooters can enjoy a few hours coaching at one of the Suffolk grounds. These events are free of charge and allow you to try a new discipline or hone your skills in a familiar one. Please look out for further updates. So here we go! Another exciting competition year lies ahead with everything to shoot for. We hope you have a brilliant year enjoying this fantastic
sport and spending time with new and old friends. Suffolk has an exceptional heritage of clay target shooting and all of you are continuing this heritage and doing Suffolk proud –thank you!
CORNWALL IAN LOBB lobb81@googlemail.com
Well, the season is almost upon us, and I feel that the Cornish members of the CPSA are ready to travel hundreds of miles to events across the UK and beyond into Europe and the Cornwall Committee wish you all well!
On 15 January Cornwall committee had the Cornwall CPSA AGM at St Stephen Social Club. This was well attended, we had some of the 2024 committee
stand down due to personal reasons/ commitments and we thank all of them for their time and help and dedication over the number of years. The new committee positions are:
Chairperson David Johns, Vice Chairperson / Super Sporting Team Manager John Trevethan, Secretary / Sport Trap Team Manager Alison MordenHawke, Treasurer / SW Committee Representative / Pull! Magazine Ian Lobb, Selection Calendar / SW Committee Representative Steve Tomlinson, Committee Members Steve Moses, Nick
Carey, Non-committee Member / Trap Team Manager Simon Ede.
The full minutes of the meeting and accounts can be found on the Cornwall CPSA website, at the meeting the Chairperson said thank you to all the grounds across Cornwall/Devon for hosting our selection and championships and this will also be for the 2025 season.
The committee are looking to hold events for the young members of the Cornwall CPSA like we held in 2024 and also looking to expand this in to a lady’s day as well to encourage more ladies in to the sport. For more information or any ideas members have, please feel free to email the Cornwall CPSA committee on committee@cornwall.cpsa.uk
Also, on the Cornwall CPSA website and Facebook page the selection/ championships calendar is now live, and these dates are subject to change due to events/ weather etc so please check in regularly to ensure you are up to date.
This year on the Trap side of DTL, UT, ABT, FITASC (TBC) the change for the selection is that members can submit three scores from three different grounds across the UK by a set date if they wish to be considered for selection. These will be submitted and then considered by the team manager and committee. More details of dates etc will be released in the near future.
Once again, thank you for your continued support in the County and if you have success stories across the sport, please do email me or the committee with your success stories and pictures and who knows you maybe in the Pull! magazine in the future.
Good luck again and keep up the great shooting and let’s bring success across all disciplines for the Duchy this season.

Solotaire – How do you play the clock card game
One pile lies at each position from 1 o'clock to 12 o'clock and one at the centre (called 13 o'clock). Go to the centre (13 o'clock) pile. Deposit this card face up beside the k o'clock pile. Repeat the last step as many times as possible. The game of clock patience has been won if no card remains face down.
RICHARD PIKE rpike@live.co.uk sites.cpsa.co.uk/dorset
2024 has been a sensational year for Richard King. As I have said previously, he is surely one of the greatest all round shooters in our generation, winning both English and British all-round championships. His achievements at County level this past year have also been incredible winning FITASC, All-round, Skeet, Universal Trench, and ABT championships.
A great set of results from our Dorset Trap Shooters over the course of 2024. Dean Rickford was our Overall DTL County Champion, and a worthy Runner-up in ABT. Great to see Paul Thomas add to his accolades, winning the Sportrap County Championship and Ian Mulliner romping home with the Olympic Trap county title.
Lorrie Greening had a great year becoming the ICTSF Disabled Sitting World Champion, as well as European and British Open champion. This year she also achieved British Open and English Open Double Rise Disabled Sitting titles to her wins and of course was our Ladies DTL County Champion.
It was great to see newbie Eamon Kelly win the Veteran ABT title in the County Championship.
Well done to all our talented shooters on their wins, but well done to everyone that has got involved, enjoyed, and participated in our Dorset Trap competitions this year.
Lastly, thank you to Alison and Wes Hann, Brookbank Shooting School, for hosting the Dorset Trap Championships throughout the year!
Our county team championships were certainly challenging and it would be fair to say that we struggled often to field teams for some of the disciplines. This then will be

We have recently held our AGM at Brook Bank. The previous year has been a successful one for Somerset in that we won the most Inter-County Championships and we were only just pipped into second place in the South West Championship total. Congratulations to all who took part in these competitions and represented the county so well.
Our finances are uite healthy in that we succeeded in completing the year with income and expenditure just about balanced, despite a price increase for the trophies and caps we handed out. A big
a challenge set for our committee for the coming year. Dorset have always been a strong competitor in all disciplines at InterCounty level and I am sure that we can once again be a formidable force.
Our committee have worked hard to secure sponsorship to help our teams.
Namely Hopkins Estates and RJ & KD Maclean (tractorsandplant.com). In return a fun days shooting was taken at Purbeck Shooting School with committee members and sponsors guest.
Our AGM was held on Tuesday 7 January at Manor arm Shoot Room, Hilfield by kind permission of the Vickery family. Once again a full committee membership was elected which includes the Sporting talents of Paul Thomas and Richard King, with also the Trap talents of Ian Mulliner and Lorrie Greening. Their involvement, experience and passion for our sport will surely be a massive boost for Dorset. A presentation was made for this years Champions of Champions winner Richard King who was awarded the trophy in remembrance of Graham Brown and presented by Sam Brown. Thanks to our generous sponsors named, finances continue to be healthy for the coming year. Championship shoots are already arranged, please keep an eye on our Facebook page for details.
In the meantime enjoy your shooting and keep pulling the trigger!
thanks to Coombe Farm Sporting who continued to supply us with badges for another year.
We start the year with a clean agenda and sufficient finances to do almost anything we think will help and progress shooting in the county. We will have held our first meeting by the time you read this, and plans will have already been put in place for fixtures, team apparel etc. We hope it meets with your approval!
The 2025 committee is Ian Stones, Alison Hann, Lorna Glover, Julian Fairburn, Robin Heal, John Bradnam, Wesley Hann, Ian Stephenson, Geoff Eltham, Andrew King, Lynn Austin, and Bryce Blandford-Corp.
We look forward to another successful year.

The Hampshire & IOW AGM was held on 16 January at OLSS and by Zoom. The majority of people there have been involved for some years so it would be great to get some fresh ideas in so if you are interested in getting involved, please speak to a member of the committee.
The Supreme Champion for 2024 was awarded to Sean Gamblen with Stuart Cureton as Runner-up. This title is awarded to the highest scoring entrant across all the County Championships. You need to enter a minimum of seven to be in with a chance of winning. It would be great to have a few more people challenging for the title in 2025.
The Hampshire County achievement awards were also announced at the meeting. This is an award across fi ve shoots which must include one Skeet, one Trap and one Sporting, the other two being your choice. Our Champions for 2024 were Sean Gamblen (Senior), Ron King (Veteran), and Jane King (Ladies). Congratulations to all our winners. We are delighted to have Ward Training
BARON PHILLIPS

With the Christmas and New Year festivities a distant memory, Wiltshire shooters are turning their attention to the upcoming 2025 competition season with a vengeance – despite the dreadful weather. Attendances at all our county grounds are strong, whether for competition or practice, reflecting the sport’s rude health in Wiltshire.
As our focus is on forthcoming competitions, we would like to encourage more Wilts members to consider shooting for the county. We know there are a large number of extremely talented shooters in the county, and we would like to see them representing Wiltshire at all the major Inter-County competitions this year. if you are interested in shooting for Wiltshire, please get in touch with Simon Cuthbert at simon@varchannels.com.
Our attention isn’t just centred on the county’s top shots. We would like to hear from all classes and categories. If you have shot well at a Registered shoot or
Services as a sponsor for this award for the 2025 season so make sure you get your scores in!
The Hampshire committee for 2025 is as follows: Andy Gordge Chair, Richard Faulds Vice Chair, Brian Coupe Treasurer, Jennie Cartwright Secretary, and your
other recognised competition, please get in touch and we will endeavour to mention you in dispatches. Remember to include your score, class/category and ground/ competition. Contact Baron Phillips at baron@baronphillipsassociates.com with all your news and any relevant captioned pictures.
Already some of our leading shooters have been active around the county and beyond in a variety of sporting disciplines: Congratulations to three of our shooters who have turned in some great performances during January. Jemma Paul took Top Lady at Meadowcroft’s ESP and was placed second in the Ladies category at Gunsite’s ESP. One of our leading Juniors, Ben Rivers, seems to go from strength to strength. He took the top Junior slot at both Barbury’s ESP and Roundwood’s FITASC. While Kevin Young was first in AA at Brook Bank s SSP and second in class for the ESP at the same ground. This is terrific shooting, and we hope they maintain their form as we move into the competition season.
Talking of competitions, we can announce the dates for most of the county championships for the coming season. To date we have tied up all the
SW Reps are Richard Faulds and Jennie Cartwright, with Lauren Goodman as Reserve. Committee: Lauren Goodman, Neil Lockton, Chris Bloxham, David Lucas, Lewis Cull, Sean Gamblen, Chris Morgan, Stuart Cureton. We’d like to thank Britta Beach for all her work for the
sporting disciplines and just waiting for confirmation on the trap events.
8 Mar SSP, Ham Cross 18 Apr AR, Brook Bank 21 Apr ESP, Ham Cross 28 Jun STR, Barbury 3 Jul FITASC, Barbury
Please do make the effort to support the county by attending as many of these events as possible. We will update you on the other competitions as soon as we have confirmed dates and location, so do please check the next edition of Pull! Magazine.
Finally, congratulations to Barbury Shooting School who won a new Promatic trap and 9,750 clays for introducing more new CPSA members than any other English shooting ground. Barbury was the winner of the CPSA Clubs and Grounds Initiative which aimed at driving membership at the association. Again, this reflects not only the great success Huw Stephens, Josh Brown, and the whole Barbury team have made of the ground over the past few years, but also the growth of interest in shooting throughout Wiltshire.
county over the last six years and wish her all the best for her move.
The main aim for 2025 will be to get as many teams as possible entered in the county, regional, and national (location dependant) championships, so if you would like to be considered please use the website contact form to forward us your details as without them we can't contact you if you make a team. Please include which disciplines you would like to be considered for so that the relevant managers can contact you.
Another idea that we discussed at the AGM was the South-Central County Championships – this was devised to allow competition between the Hampshire teams and the teams from the counties that border Hampshire. Some of the Inter-Counties events are held a long way away! Hopefully members would love the chance to be in a Hampshire team and shoot against teams from Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, Surrey, and Berkshire at a more local venue. This would give those that like competitive shooting something to aim for. Hopefully we can recreate the fun and banter that the team events bring. Our Chairman is going to investigate this further – if you have any thoughts please let him know.
We have also started to set dates for our 2025 County Championships so keep an eye out on the website and the Facebook page for more details and how to book on. Coming up in April we have:
DTL at Fareham on Sat 5 April, English Sporting at Owls Lodge on Sat 19 April, All Round at Fareham on Sat 26 April. As always if anyone has any news or photos for us to share please send them to me, details above. All that remains is to wish all our Hampshire and Isle of Wight shooters all the best for a successful 2025 shooting season.

The CPSA South East region AGM will be held on Wednesday 12 March at 7:30pm in the comfortable Bisley Shooting Ground Clubhouse. There will be buffet food provided, and a bar will be available.
Each of the nine Counties in our region can nominate two SE Representatives, so please make sure you have selected your representatives and encourage them to come along to ensure that your County can have their say. There will be a zoom link on the South-East website so they do not even have to come out in the cold to be involved. www.southeast.cpsa.uk
We are still sharing secretarial duties and Richard has arranged seven South East Inter-County events so far including Sporting and Skeet events. We are awaiting confirmation of the Trap dates and will add them to the Fixtures page of the website as soon as we have them. Richard has also arranged nine South East of England and two South of England Championships. Please click the Fixtures link on our website for full listings.
New for 2025
The Committee have introduced a new Clubman category for 2025 to be run concurrently with our South East of
England events. To encourage more shooters to enter, Clubman Champion Badges will be awarded to the highest scoring C or B Class shooter in all of our South East of England Championships. our first opportunity will be the Inter Counties Sportrap event at Southdown on Sunday 29 June. Remember that these are not just Team events and anyone can enter individually. This will be open for all C and B Class shooters who will not have to be part of the County Team.
The website now has sections for Fixtures, Results, Information and Rules and there is also a link to our Facebook site which has reports and loads of photos – Please go and have a look around them and let us know if you would like anything added, or if any elements are not working. www.southeast.cpsa.uk

Hello Oxfordshire, I hope you are all well and ready for the great clay shooting that the year ahead of us holds.
Firstly, our Oxfordshire AGM hasn't happened yet, as I write this report, but I can include a sneak peak of the results of the Oxfordshire Sporting Challenge results for 2024. Yes, I know they are available on our Facebook page but not everyone wants to be a part of the social media group.
So, our County Champion is the one and only Julian Freeman. Congratulations Julian, a great result. Second place goes to Karl Field, well done Karl. Third place goes to Bob Blundell and Colin Waite, well done guys. Fifth place goes to Steve Cox,
PETER SAICH petersaich@hotmail.com surreycpsa@yahoo.com
well done Steve. Charlotte Allen won A Class, Jamie Whitton won B Class and Jon Wiseman won C Class. Well done to each and every one of you and thank you for supporting this great competition that Oxfordshire committee organise. It wouldn't be possible without the generosity of Steve Cox of Banbury Gunsmiths, thank you Steve.
So far this year, as I compile this report, not a lot of shooting has taken place but I have found one or two results to include. E.J. Churchill saw 98 shooters take part in their mid-week shoot on 16 January. A huge well done to Gary Davis for his brilliant score of 92/100, second place in AA Class and third on the leaderboard. Julian Freeman shot 91/100 placing him third in AAA Class (he was beaten by a AA Class shooter!) Well done Julian!
Westfi eld saw their mid anuary Sporting shoot a popular one, it saw 146 people turn out to compete. I am
CPSA Volunteer of the Year
We are very proud that our hard-working Secretary Jo Watson-Hopkinson was nominated as CPSA Volunteer of the year
pleased to report that Tim Richards wiped the fl oor in A Class with his impressive 9 100 taking fi rst place, fi ve clays clear of second place, Well done Tim, brilliant score.
Hangman's Stone hosted their 100 Registered Sporting shoot towards the end of January which drew 119 shooters out of their houses to take part in a damp competition.
Oxfordshire's Paul Mansbridge beat a number of AAA Class shooters (a lot to fi nish with a score of 9 100, winning A Class and placing him third on the leaderboard. Well done Paul, it's a great achievement.
I will include all the news from the AGM once it has taken place in the April Pull edition. If you would like me to include any results or achievements that you are proud of please get in touch at the email address above. That leaves me to say, happy safe shooting everyone.
and congratulate her on making the fi nal three. The winner will be announced at the CPSA Awards ceremony in early March, so we
hope that you all voted for her and are there to support her at the ceremony. Good luck Jo.
Surrey Fixtures 2025
Thanks to our secretary, (see accolade above!) we have a full calendar of 15 Surrey County Championship events again this season. The first dates are detailed below but for the full list please see the Fixtures page on our Surrey CPSA website www.surreycpsa.com (also managed by Jo – do you see the pattern emerging?)
Surrey Supreme Championship
The 2024 Surrey Supreme Championship was very successful with 55 Surrey shooters taking part. There was a split of three Sporting events, three Trap and three Skeet with All Round and Helice making the eleven disciplines.
The format will be unchanged this year with the best seven points results from the 11 qualifying championships. 1 points are awarded for fi rst place down to one point for 15th place. Why not come along and try a new discipline – you might like it and gain some points.
Congratulations to Riccardo Verrilli who won last season and has now joined the Surrey Committee – welcome Riccardo.
Forthcoming events
We are very much in the hands of the grounds when it comes to fi xing dates and in an attempt to avoid clashes, we have started early this year with the Surrey Sportrap being held at Southdown in February. Unfortunately not a lot to report about in this article. Competitions have continued but how unlucky have Southdown been with three competitions in a row in storms! The weather was wild, but the brave shooters out there persevered with some very good scores coming in.
I’m going to take this opportunity to put out an early request for any Colts, Juniors, and Ladies –which I know there are a lot of – to get more involved. Please enter the County competitions. We don’t have enough of people in these categories entering but there are plenty who are more than capable of shooting the various disciplines. Please remember that by entering and
placing gains points in the Supreme Champion competition.
The AGM for 2025 will be held at Southdown Gun Club on Wednesday 5 March at 19:30 for a 20:00 start. This is the time to collect your trophy or Supreme Champion prize and have a say in the matters regarding clay shooting in Sussex. All Sussex CPSA members are welcome and remember this is the time to collect your well-earned trophy.

On Tuesday 14th January the funeral of Andrew (Andy) Cairns took place at Trent Valley Crematorium, Derbyshire with 200+ mourners in attendance.
In accordance with his families wishes country and shooting attire was worn by the majority of those attending giving the funeral an atmosphere that Andy would have greatly approved of.
A total of £920 was given in donations and divided between Help the Heroes, a charity that was close to Andy's heart and McMillan Cancer Care, who helped Andy so much during his illness.
Although probably best known in the Midlands area as a referee, a keen shooter
and a passionate collector of vintage cartridges, Andy was one of the many unsung heroes of the clay and field sports world.
Upon retirement Andy decided to qualify as both a CPSA and FITASC referee in order give back to the sport he loved and was soon refereeing at all the major competitions (the most recent being the British Open in 2023) plus regional shoots and helping out at the local game shoots with his (often well behaved) dog Jason.
With a background in engineering and the military (TA), Andy was what can only be described as “old school” in his approach to both life and shooting. Any task or favour asked of him was always done to the best of his abilities with a high level of craftmanship and ingenuity. His encyclopedic knowledge of the CPSA handbook was legendary among his fellow referees and any competitor that challenged or question his decision soon found this out being put in their place with his famous “That’s not how it works” speech. All of this was however tempered by his dry sense of humour and quick wit.
Andy was also well known for being stuck in his ways. He always called a broken clay a “Kill” rather than a “Hit” and insisting on calling out the order of play…every time, much to the amusement of those around, for example “Johnson to shoot, Smith to follow, make ready Jones” was a well-known mantra that could be heard coming from his stand.
I am sure that many of you out there will have fond memories and anecdotes of Andy which we encourage you to share and help keep his memory alive.
Andy leaves behind his long-time partner Barbara Bond and a sister Sheila, his faithful dog Jason, many friends in both the clay pigeon, target rifle shooting and game shooting world, the rambling club, the local community as a whole and, of course, the local pub.
Andy Cairns RIP.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of well-known shooter Vic Thrower. Vic had been around the shooting circuit for many years and had accumulated many friends, shooting mainly FITASC and represented GB in the team. He had travelled all over Europe supporting FITASC. Many will remember him from Southern Counties which was close to Vic's home.
In later years he still did the occasional shoot but ill health eventually put a stop to this. He will be fondly remembered by many and especially close friends, Bill Joyce and family, Heather, Barry, and Trevor.

Some shooters are sensitive to the punishing effects of recoil, so we ve created a ulti t hydraulic recoil pad for wood stocks that utilizes dampening technology borrowed from the aerospace industry that dramatically reduces recoil: 80% Less Recoil Energy, 35% Less Muzzle Lift, 25% Less Peak Force, 35% Less Rock Back to give youth shooters greater accuracy, less flinching and a better shooting experience. No measuring, no grinding, no hassle.
Jack now 17 years old stated shooting pigeons at the age of 6 with his father using a bolt action 4.10. At the age of 11, whilst out shooting, his raw talent was spotted by the well-known Sussex champion Guy Franklin. Guy referred Jack to Fiona Thompson, a coach at Southdown Gun Club and Shooting School for an introductory assessment and coaching which started at a CPSA Young Shots Day. Fiona has continued to guide and encourage Jack over the last five years watching him grow and develop into the proficient clay shot he is today.
He was selected to shoot for the county in 2023 and was first in Colts at the Sussex Sporting Championship and also at Southdown Grand Masters. He is also a member of the Sussex Fitasc Team.
What makes Jack so remarkable is his monumental success shooting Helice. Having shot Helice for the first time in Jun 2024, he was advised to shoot the GBR ualification rounds and ualified as a junior for the GBR team in Jul 2024 with minimal preparation and tuition. This astonishing achievement is rare to say the least. He has now represented his country with the Team in Cairo, Egypt at the World Helice championships in Oct 2024 and is expected to take part in the European Championships in France early 2025. He currently shoots with a Bretta Silver Pigeon II which his father bought him at the Game Fair. In recognition of his recent achievement and support provided to him by Evolution Sunglasses and Eyewear, he will now be wearing their Magnetic Lens System.
What makes Jack so remarkable is his monumental success shooting Helice.
Jacks love for Game shooting over the years has culminated in a year’s study in Game and Wildlife Management at Sparsholt collage and he has just commenced his first appointment as under keeper at Eastlands with Warren Howes at Howes Sporting.
