SWITCHCRAFT

The Hypersport may have been built for safety, but it’s no stick in the mud. A feature called Switch enables you, at the push of a button, to instantly tuck in the bike’s windscreen, handlebars, seat, and so on, for more streamlined ergonomics

DA MON H Y PE R S PORT A motorbike stuffed with anti-crash technology was always going to rev our engines, which is why we’re keen as mustard for the Hypersport. Made by Canadian firm Damon, the Hypersport is a prototype electric motorbike; a 4G-connected machine with a main objective of keeping you safer on the road. The Hypersport’s clever CoPilot function uses sensors and cameras to intuitively monitor your surroundings, whether you’re riding through an urban landscape or somewhere a little more rugged. While doing so, the CoPilot tech calculates the speed and distance of up to 64 moving objects at a time. If it determines you’re at risk of a forward collision, it’ll notify you via haptic vibration in your handlebar grips. The Hypersport watches your back, too, alerting you to potential blind-spot hazards via LED lights on the windscreen. damonxlabs.com

Ë? ` Č‘Ë?)+0+.+( Č? +Č?%* The Motorola Razr is a cutting-edge, foldable phone that’s also a throwback to one of the most iconic handset designs of all time: the original Razr V3 that launched in 2004‌ it’s the future wrapped in the past. We got a chance to test it, to see whether this synthesis is novel enough to be worth ipping out over. We assumed that foldables would bridge the gap between phones and tablets by unfolding horizontally into a wider display. Motorola has other ideas, however, and its take ips open to reveal an elongated touchscreen that’s just a bit longer than the iPhone 11’s display. So, no, you don’t get much more screen real estate. The novelty lies in what you can do when the phone is closed down to a pocket-friendly size, as there’s a smaller display on the outside for checking texts, calls, music, emails and such. Below that quick-look screen is the rear camera – which, when the Razr is closed becomes a selďŹ e camera, with the small display showing what it’s looking at. The interior display is a 21:9 OLED screen with a resolution of 876x2142. That’s cinematic-level widescreen, like those on Sony’s Xperia phones, but less sharp. Being so widescreen is a bit up and down if you want to use it to watch media – movies look fantastic when they ďŹ ll the screen, not all of the content on Netix and other TV services ďŹ lls it. But for a foldable phone at a lower price than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Razr is built well. Yes, you can feel the hinge beneath the screen as you run your ďŹ nger over the middle, but it doesn’t obstruct. Better still, unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Razr’s display doesn’t have a visible seam – though we’d love to see if that holds up after years of opening and closing it. There is a front screen, much like the old-school Razr – though in place of the dated 96x80 digital colour LCD, the new Razr has a 2.7-inch 800x600 display. It’s far sharper than expected, and makes selďŹ es a joy. Just tap the screen, hit the volume button or turn on ‘smile for shutter’, and the phone takes a photo. The Razr has a single 16MP rear camera, which Ȇȇ T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today Ë?ȇȅȇȅ

functions ďŹ ne. Given that last year’s Moto Z4 dropped down to one lens but supplemented it with much-improved software, we assume the new Razr will take photos of the same quality. The ones we took seemed ďŹ ne – and you’re not buying the Razr for photography, anyway. Elsewhere, the phone runs Android 9 and packs a Snapdragon 710 chipset – which doesn’t reach the performance of the advanced Snapdragon 855 in the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Why not the latest chipset? Because it would’ve drained more battery and generated more heat than the Razr team desired for the phone’s ďŹ nal design. In many ways, this new handset inherits the old Razr’s initial reputation as a pricey status symbol – though instead of a fashion ex, the new Razr is a design darling. Yes, it’s a big nostalgia play, but it’s also an innovative new direction that smartphones could follow to break out of the black rectangle convention. And yet, convention drives down costs, and the unique design in the new Razr comes at a price. It’s hard to tell whether the novel form factor will convince folks to fork over more money for functionality they could largely have at a much lower price tag.

BATTERY DOUBT While Motorola assures us that the 2,510mAh battery will last all day, we aren’t sure that will hold up to more strenuous GPS and media-watching activity. However, if the front screen leads users to preview more and open their phone less, that could lend weight to Motorola’s assertion

STORAGE LIMITATION The Razr doesn’t have a slot for expanding the storage or inserting a SIM card (the phone uses eSIM), and neither is there a 3.5mm headphone jack. Meanwhile, the right side of the phone features a volume rocker and a lock button, but they’re too slim and sharp to be terribly useful

QUICK FIX

TAKE A HIIT ON THIS AI BIKE Time poor but health conscious? Mark Mayne takes a look into the future of exercise, where HIIT meets AI bikes to bring rapid results Gym work might be a vital building block in your fitness routine, but it’s also not the most exciting place to while away an hour. But now there is a way to do things quicker. The CAR.O.L HIIT bike pairs an AI-powered fitness coach (CAR.O.L) with a lightweight and stowable static bike to deliver perfectly optimised HIIT workouts. CAR.O.L claims you’ll get the same fitness benefit of a 45-minute jog in under nine minutes on this bike, with only 40 seconds of really hard work. Though, it doesn’t come cheap. Broadly, the idea is to exercise against

perfectly calibrated resistance in order to hit your body’s maximum intensity in a super-short space of time, and therefore burn as much glycogen as quickly as possible. Faced with this sudden spike in activity, your body responds by improving cardiovascular fitness in order to cope with similar sudden sprint-style demands. While this won’t improve your marathon times (or other long endurance-style abilities), it will improve peak fitness, which is definitely a win – especially in under nine minutes.

PERFECT SHOT

MAGIC ACTION MAKER An AI-powered, modular 360/4K rig with an invisible selfie stick, this is a serious step up from your old action cam Here’s a modular action camera that enables you to switch between 360 and 4K wide angle lenses like a pro photographer, but still weighs in at a tiny 130g. The Insta360 ONE R also packs in a laundry list of technical functions: a FlowState stabilisation, voice control, slow motion, hyperlapse and an invisible selfie stick. Yes, that’s right, an invisible selfie stick. The 360 camera auto-removes the stick, giving you drone-like shots and impossible angles without the drone (or BBC camera crew). Creating astonishing video just got much, much easier…

What’s the best solution for portable PC gaming? You would likely expect Guru to suggest a hoofing great gaming laptop here, right? Wrong as usual, reader: that’s a dumb and incredibly expensive idea. A gaming laptop can be a great thing if you’re lugging it from place to place, and there are indeed some absolutely superb examples out there, but they’re best used on a desk. That fits one definition of portable, but not all of them. Perhaps you’ve seen Alienware’s Concept UFO prototype, waved around at CES to great excitement. Ignore comparisons to the Nintendo Switch (they’re about as relevant as comparing its

horizontal layout to that of the Atari Lynx, really) and look at the meat of it, and it seems like a pretty decent little thing, a promising idea for the future of portable PC games. You can’t have one, though. You can’t even have the neat little GPD Win 2, which does actually exist, because stock seems to have run out – expect an

ABOVE To be fair, in the LAN party days, this wasn’t that weird a sight…

announcement and a Kickstarter for the Win 3 and/or Win MAX some time very soon. Basically there’s no good answer here. So here’s Guru’s slightly out there suggestion: a cheap tablet like the Amazon Fire HD 10. Admittedly you’re not going to be playing PC games on the bus, but if you’re in network range of your existing gaming PC, you can hook up a Bluetooth controller, sideload the Steam Link app, and get playing in seconds. Maybe even grab a controller adapter and clamp it to your Android handset? Presto: you’re playing The Witcher III on the toilet. W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

Let it be clear, Guru is no photography expert. A man from Boots keeps trying to put one of those passiveaggressive oval ‘it wasn’t our fault’ stickers on your author’s phone screen just to cut out the middle man. Guru is, though, a master of mashing things onto other things, so he can offer a few general clues here. It may be tempting to suspect that manufacturer-specific lens types are just a way to tie you into an ecosystem and, over time, a way to ensure that the money firing out of your wallet towards your expensive DSLR habit lands directly in that manufacturer’s pocket. Not (entirely) so: a camera system is a delicate balance of sensor, connector, electronics and optics. For the body of your camera to work perfectly with its lens, the latter needs to be sitting at just the right flange focal length from the sensor in order to focus properly. Converting the threading and focal length of a foreign or vintage lens isn’t actually that tricky – there’s a vast variety of converters out there that can help you attach one thing to another. They’re not cheap, however, because they generally need to use complicated bridging lenses to tweak the focal distance; turning those sparkling junk shop optics into something you can use could end up costing a pretty penny. If you can’t convert the electronic side of things, you may lose automatic control of a number of lens features – and if the lens you’re trying to use doesn’t have a manual aperture ring you’ll be stuck at maximum aperture, which isn’t ideal. Thankfully some converters use what are called dandelion chips to convert the communication protocols between lens and camera.

How do I chop onions without crying? would, were it not for A GaGu the restraining order, come round and cauterize your tear ducts for you. Presuming that’s not something you want (it rarely is) you may wish to instead don a pair of special onion-proof goggles: half gag gift, half useful way to make yourself into the dorkiest chef in the room. Really, you may as well grab KitchenCraft’s Dame Edna-style goggles to get the full effect. Rather than isolating your eyeballs, why not isolate the onion? Peel it, half it (with your eyes closed) then wallop it into Kenwood’s CH180A Mini Chopper to keep all those fumes safely contained. And let’s be realistic: that’s only a tenner away from the Kenwood Compact FP120 Food Processor, which is going to be a lot more useful in the long run. Alternatively, do as Guru does and buy bags of pre-chopped onions for the freezer, a slightly more expensive and wasteful exercise which eliminates all of this nonsense entirely.

KEEP IT CLEAN

HOW TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION INSIDE YOUR HOME The air inside our homes can be up to three times more polluted than outside. Claire Davies has advice on how to breathe more freely Breathing clean air is our right, but it’s getting harder. That’s especially true inside the home, where our activities can contribute to poorer air quality. These activities can involve cooking, cleaning, crafting (anything where you use glue and paint), burning candles and, of course, smoking. The British Lung Foundation describes indoor air pollution as “dust, dirt or gases in the air inside a building … that harms us if we breathe it in”. If you have a lung condition, such as asthma, you’re susceptible, as are children (their lungs are still developing). We can’t fully eliminate indoor pollution, but there’s a lot we can do to protect our health. That starts with cleaning… What you use to clean your home makes a difference to how unhealthy the air becomes. According to the American Lung Association, some cleaning products, like furniture polish and bleach, can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that could contribute to respiratory problems, allergies and headaches. Choosing more natural cleaning products – think Method or Ecover – is a good start.

32 T3 Tomorrow’s Technology Today MARCH 2020

Also ensure you have an air purifier nearby when cleaning. The Blueair Classic 405 creates a purified space in rooms of up to 434 square feet, and its use of Hepa Silent tech means you’ll hardly hear it. Dyson’s cordless vacs, including the Cyclone V10, capture harmful particulate matter (PM) as they clean your carpets. If you’re unsure how much indoor air pollution you’re dealing with, plug in the Awair 2nd Edition and watch it track invisible fine dust and chemicals in your home’s air. Plants are nature’s weapon against pollution, so fill your home with ‘clean air’ plants. There’s lots of choice, from Dragon Tree to Aloe Vera (if you have pets, check to see if your preferred plant is harmful to animals). Sit smaller desk plants in a Lua smart planter (mu-design.lu) to help them flourish. We burn candles to fragrance our homes and create a cosy vibe, but, depending on what they’re made from, candles can produce carcinogens. Switch to an essential oil diffuser instead, as these scent without creating toxins. For fragrancing larger spaces, choose the VicTsing Essential Oil Diffuser.

Special Feature Hyundai Road Safety

ROAD SAFETY is of Paramount Importance Words: Ruhi Singh | Photography: Arya Arora HE ROAD SAFETY WEEK IS A national event that strives to heighten public awareness about traffic rules with a view to reducing traffic related mishaps and causalities. Car India, in association with Hyundai Motor India, aims to create awareness among motor enthusiasts through print and digital activities. According to a report released by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in September 2019, India ranks at the top for road accidents with the highest number of fatalities; constituting almost 11 per cent globally. The data collected from all the states and Union Territories in respect of road accidents in 2018 stood at 1,51,417, which indicates an increase of 2.3 per cent over the figures for 2017. The government enforced the use of safety provisions, including seat belt reminder, speed alerts, reverse camera, and air bags. However, the most important initiative taken by the government this year with respect to road safety has been the enactment of the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act 2019 which makes a provision for steep hikes in the fines/ penalties for traffic violations. Hyundai launched the #BeTheBetterGuy campaign in 2016 and it has been receiving overwhelming response. The campaign highlights critical issues pertaining to road safety such as under age driving, driving while under the influence, use of mobile phone while driving, speeding, and violation of traffic signals. Some people are quite responsible on the road and Hyundai call them the better guys and salute them so that they can be role models for others. We had a chat with two such real life heroes to find out how the general populace can become responsible drivers.

T

Aspi Bhathena, Editor, Car India Road safety is of utmost importance. A lot of positive changes can be brought about if you obey at least the basic dos and don’ts and adhere punctiliously to the principle of “the right of way”. Above all, be considerate to every other road-user. This includes pedestrians too. If there are people lined up at the pedestrian crossing, we must stop to let them pass. If followed properly, lane discipline can ease congestion and even allow emergency vehicles to reach their destinations quicker.

Amanda Brown AVP-Brand Activation, Wizcraft International Entertainment A workaholic on week days and a biker on weekends, Amanda has covered 45,000 kilometres on her bike and feels that apart from the life that she lives presently, there is a life on the other side of the handlebar that she relishes thoroughly. ‘An open road is a symbol of freedom. A long open road calls to the heart and wheels; an invite to explore the unknown and return to the comfortable,’ says Amanda. She adds that the person can truly soak in the experience when they are free from any distraction, especially the ever-so-ready-at-hand smartphone. At the end of the day, the only important thing is to be able to drive again. So, the next time you start that engine, remember to drive safely and wear your seat-belt, knowing someone who loves you is waiting at home. Don’t drink and drive, but think and thrive.

Kabir Waraich, Co-founder, Gerrari Offroaders Kabir founded Gerrari Offroaders in 2008 with a vision to do extreme off-roading with like-minded people. He has been actively participating in many off-roading competitions and the company also helps out in national rally events, including Raid De Himalaya, Desert Storm, and Mughal Rally. Talking about his profession, Kabir shares that many think racing is about getting to victory lane, but that there’s so much more than that. There are championships to be won but there is also respect, memories, relationships, and, most importantly, safety. He adds, ‘The crowning moment of my racing career was never winning or my humble collection of race day trophies, it was telling my father that I followed all the safety rules.’ Today when Kabir is out in his car, he never violates traffic rules. ‘I also educate people about speeding, since it is not just about their own life but also about others’. Furthermore, the red light at a traffic signal is the most critical component of any road network. Violating that rule is equal to risking your own life.’ Kabir further says that it is understandable that teenagers want to feel the thrill associated with driving a car, but enjoins that parents must step in and ask the teenagers to follow traffic rules. Let us not wait for a devastating accident or a hefty fine. Be a responsible driver.

ALIENWARE CONCEPT UFO O

XBOX SERIES X

Why shouldn’t PC gaming be properly portable? And we’re not talking luggable laptops, here – we mean the sort of thing you can play on the bus. Taking more than a few design ideas from the Nintendo Switch (to the point that we imagine a few furrowed brows at Nintendo HQ), Dell’s concept device suggests the company could be set to PDNH WKDW D UHDOLW\ ,WèV QRW D ĆQLVKHG product just yet but expect an eightinch display, detachable controllers, USB Type-C monitor connectivity and syrupy-smooth (if slightly dialled-back) PC games on the go. alienware.com

The PlayStation 5 is coming too, but we know a little more about the new topend Xbox model than Sony’s console (at the time of writing, at least). Next-gen processing and graphics tech promises mind-blowing visuals, including ray tracing support, which is a tech for realistically recreating the physics of light, so worlds look much more life-like. It will offer frame rates up to 120fps (great for racing or fast arcade games), and even promises 8K output, but we’ll believe support for actual 8K games when we see it. Expect it just before the end of the year. xbox.com

BELKIN SOUNDFORM ELITE HI-FI SMART SPEAKER + WIRELESS CHARGER A Google Assistant smart speaker with a little groove to place your phone. How neat. Oh, but there’s more: that groove houses a Qi charger, juicing up that device while you get on with something else. And that’s not all: Ludicrously, Belkin has teamed up with the high-end audio wizards at Devialet to create the YLEUDWLRQ UHGXFLQJ GXDO ZRRIHU DXGLRbSDFNDJH LQ D speaker far more affordable than Devialet’s usual IDUH 7KLV SURPLVHV WR EH WKH EHVW VRXQGLQJbVSHDNHU Belkin has ever made – and we wouldn’t bet against it UXIćLQJ VRPH IHDWKHUV DURXQG WKH UHVW RI WKH ZLUHOHVV speaker world. belkin.com

TCL X915 Expect to see a lot more of this company in 2020 as it breaks into the market, and this TV will be one way it makes waves. It’s an 8K TV with a QLED panel and local dimming for dramatic contrast – basically matching the tech in other 8K TVs, but it’ll likely arrive at an extremely aggressive price. Available in 65-inch or 75-inch sizes, it also includes Dolby Vision (and HDR10+) and IMAX Enhanced FHUWLĆFDWLRQV ZLWK DXGLR IURP KL Ć VSHFLDOLVWV 2QN\R PDNLQJ LW DQ DOO URXQG premium set. And it has a built-in camera that rises and hides automatically if you use a video-chat app through the Android OS. tcl.com

AUDIO-TECHNICA ATH-ANC300TW Smaller, faster, cheaper sound processor and microscopic surface-mounted microphones mean it’s no wonder that active noise cancelling is fast becoming a standard feature in headphones, but trust Audio-Technica to take the ball and run with it with this set of tiny and super-powerful true wireless buds. Its QuietPoint tech brings with it threelevel hybrid noise cancelling, tweakable depending on the environment you’re in. And the incorporation of Qualcomm’s TrueWireless Stereo Plus means a compatible device can stream to both of these earphones simultaneously, making for better battery and lower latency. CANON EOS 1D X MARK III

Though priced out of the enthusiast market – Canon’s newest flagship DSLR is more than its 2016 predecessor – this is a pro camera with some truly special features. There’s a touch-sensitive smart controller on the AF-ON button useful for quickly shifting your focus point, a lighter-weight body, full weather sealing, and a new Digic X processor. The latter means some seriously fast computation, allowing 20 frames per second burst shooting in a string of up to 1,000 raw images, and an autofocus that’s near-instant. Oh, and 4K 60fps shooting, including 10-bit 4:2:2 support. in.canon

DANBY PARCEL GUARD

JABRA ELITE 45H

As we move towards ordering everything online, porch pirates are everywhere. But getting your packages more securely delivered with smart lock services like Amazon Key might worry you. With the Parcel Guard, your delivery gets dropped into an anti-theft top section, then makes its way into the larger locked bottom box – with smart features like an integrated camera, motion sensor, tamper alarm and a weight monitor to tell you when something’s been dropped off, it’s the next best thing to staying home all day peering through your peephole.

With gigantic 40mm drivers and an intensely tunable sound, Jabra’s latest looks set to be a banger – the company is aiming to deliver premium audio quality and maximum battery (perhaps reaching as far as 40 hours playback) at an affordable price. Seriously, how far has Jabra come in the past few years? This is an on-ear headset with style to rival the big names in portable audio, with twin microphones to ensure your Bluetooth calls are heard loud and clear, integration with most voice assistants (sorry, Bixby) and a IROGDEOHbFRQVWUXFWLRQ IRU EDJ VWDVKLQJ or neck wearing. jabra.com

PHILIPS OLED 805 2020’s OLED TVs won’t necessarily be showcases of brand-new technology – they’ll be more about advanced processing. Philips is sticking to its guns in terms of design, with the company’s signature metal frame look still present and correct, but it certainly seems to have dialled things up in the brains department. The 4th-gen P5 processor of the OLED 805 adds AI processing to its superb image handling abilities, and it can give you feedback on what it thinks it’s seeing along with a split-screen comparison of the results. Nifty – and with Ambilight (natch) you’re sure of a ZDUP bFRORXUIXO H[SHULHQFH philips.co.in

CELESTRON STARSENSE DX 130

Actually finding your way around the night sky with a telescope can be a real drag. The process of manually aligning a scope, or dialling in every little thing about your location? No more. Celestron’s DX 130, in conjunction with the StarSense Explorer app, will do it all for you. Point your phone at the sky and it’ll analyse the stars to work out where you are, then it’ll tell you what you might be able to see – even if you’re stuck in the inner city. Tap your target and it’ll help you guide this scope’s generous five-inch reflector to precisely the right angle. Smart. celestron.com

PANASONIC SC-HTB01 GAMING SPEAKER

Designed in conjunction with game publisher Square Enix for use with both a PC monitor and a TV, the SX-HTB01 clearly takes its visual cues from the standard soundbar layout. But it’s more than that: the virtual surround capabilities of the 2.1 channel system can be tuned to suit the game you’re playing. Hit up FPS mode, for example, and you’ll get accurate sound location so you know exactly where those footsteps and gunshots are coming from, and there are RPG and voice modes too. All this plus Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X support, so it’ll be just as at home when playing a film. panasonic.com

RETURN OF THE POCO

POCO X2 The new phone marks the return of POCO as an independent brand From `15,999, poco.in WORDS KUNAL GANGAR

ȎȅˏT3 Tomorrow’s Technology Todayˏ ˏȇȅȇȅ

he last we heard about POCO was in 2018 when Xiaomi launched the POCO F1 under its new sub-brand and while they continued to launch new devices under its Redmi sub-brand, POCO’s sole offering seemed like an experiment. Until now, that is. Xiaomi has now spun-off POCO as an independent brand that not only competes with Xiaomi but also takes on the e competition. The firstt phone after POCO turning into a separate brrand is the POCO X2 and as the name suggests, itt’s not exactly a POCO F2 successor but an altogeth her new series. POCO to ook a pragmatic approach while designing the t F1 but its decision of featuring a polycarbon nate shell received a mixed response by customers. However, there’s no such contentious design deciision with the X2. The POCO X2 boasts a 3D curved glass body that enhances the gradient design at th he back and at the same time, allows the large displa ay on the front get all the attention. A circle around the vertical quad-camera setup is a nice design n touch. When it comes to ports and physical buttons, the volume e keys and power button are on the right-hand d side with the power button doubling up as a fing gerprint sensor. On the left side is a hybrid SIM M tray while the bottom houses the Type-C porrt, 3.5mm headphone jack and a loudspeake er. IR blaster has been a mainstay in Xiaomi dev vices and the POCO X2 keeps its parent company’s tradition alive, which you will find at the top of the phone. However, it’s just not all shimmer. Adding A to POCO X2’s durability cred is the P2i that protects the phone from water splashes. Overall, we like what the POCO X2 has to offer on the design front and it’s a major step forward if you compa are it with the first POCO phone. The X2 sells s in three colours - Matrix Purple, Phoenix Re ed and Atlantis Blue and while the finish goes well with w these primary colours, we would love to see a black or a white option as well. The fron nt sports a 6.67-inch display that supports 24 400x1080 FHD+ resolution and an aspect ratio p o of 20:9. But the large screen size is not the talking point here. The screen dubbed as

POCO X2

RealityFlow has a refresh rate of 120Hz, making it the second phone after Asus’ ROG Phone II to sport a higher refresh rate display. Compared to Asus’ offering, the POCO X2 is priced at virtually half the price, which is impressive. Higher refresh rate means smooth scrolling experience on supported apps and improved gaming performance. The gaming bit depends on the games actually supporting 120Hz but given the proliferation of such displays, the support will only grow. The display quality is good, supports HDR10 and comes with features like colour temperature adjustment, reading mode and dark mode. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730G with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. This helps to deliver super-smooth performance and handles most apps and games with ease. During our use, we didn’t experience any slowdown and the MIUI 11 felt fluid. If you’re a mobile gamer, the phone is not only capable of handling casual games but also graphic intensive games like PUBG and Call of Duty: Mobile. The phone is also equipped with LiquidCool technology to keep the thermal temperature in check and sustain performance for a longer period. One thing that thoroughly impressed us with the POCO X2 is the battery. The 4500mAh battery easily delivers a battery life of more than a day if used heavily or up to two days, ranging from moderate to conservative use. The icing on the cake is 27W charging support and the charger comes in the box. The POCO X2 has a quad-camera setup at the back with Sony’s IMX686 64MP sensor as the main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide and 2MP cameras for depth and macro. Xiaomi has been hard at work to improve its camera algorithm in the last couple of years and POCO X2 has clearly got a helping W W W.T 3 I N D I A . CO M

hand from them. Photos from the primary camera have good colours, dynamic range and are detailed in good lighting conditions. Low-light photos are understandably, not as good as well-lit ones but still acceptable for a phone at this price. The ultra-wide enables to have a 120-degree field of view, giving users the freedom to capture more. The macro lens is good for close-up shots while the depth sensor helps with edge detection while taking portraits. Interestingly, the phone also supports RAW image capture, making it handy if you want to tweak the image later on. For videos, there’s 4K video recording support, EIS and 960fps slo-mo mode. Front-facing selfies are taken care by dual cameras - 20MP and 2MP depth. Now that we know all about the POCO X2, is the phone good enough for a brand that’s re-entering the crowded smartphone space? We think it is. It’s got looks, performance, good camera, battery life and most importantly, an aggressive price tag, making it one of the best phones you can buy right now in this price range.

VERDICT WE’RE IMPRESSED Design, performance WE’D IMPROVE Colour options THE LAST WORD Starting from Rs. 15,999, POCO X2 is an excellent value for money phone that has the looks and performance.

BANG FOR THE BUCK

Realme C3

Powerful performance at a pocket-friendly price `6,999, realme.com/in ealme has been expanding its product lineup at a breathtaking pace. The latest phone to join its portfolio is the entry-level C3. The Realme C3 takes over from last year’s C2 with improved design and hardware. Realme adopted a diamond-cut design with the Realme C2 but the Realme C3 features what is called as the Sunrise Design and to be honest, we like it better than the previous one. Resembling rays of sunshine originating from the camera module, the phone looks good and certainly more expensive than at the price it sells. The textured plastic surface at the back also helps with the grip and prevents unwanted scratches. Furthermore, the Realme C3 is also splash-resistant. In terms of ports and buttons, the volume keys are on the left-hand side along with the SIM and memory card tray; power button on the right-hand side; 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom with a microUSB port. The Realme C3 has a 6.5-inch HD+ display (1600x720) with a dot notch design that houses the front camera. The display is decent for the price with good viewing angles and contrast. The phone features an eye care mode and a simple slider to adjust the screen colour temperature. There’s dark mode as well. This is also the first phone to come with Realme UI out of the box and while you’ll find some traces of ColorOS, Realme UI feels cleaner, streamlined and improved features like dual mode music share, focus mode, personal information protection, etc. Realme C3 also bags the first place to use MediaTek’s Helio G70 processor and coupled with 3GB or 4GB of RAM, the phone delivers a solid performance. The phone handles apps and casual games like a charm as well as demanding games. Admittedly, you have to play them at low or medium settings but still impressive considering the price range it is competing in. The 5000mAh battery ensures you don’t have to worry about charging it throughout the day (or two, depending on the use) and while it does not have fast charging, Realme bundles a 10W charger in the box. If Realme C3 shines on the performance and the battery side, it underwhelms on the camera front. The 12MP main and 2MP depth camera setup sounds promising but it takes mediocre photographs. However, there are features like expert mode, HDR, Chroma Boost to enhance the image. Selfies are handled by a 5MP sensor. As a complete package, Realme C3 is a really good phone with a starting price of `6,999. Sure, the camera performance could have been better but the phone delivers exceptional performance and battery life.

Retro

T3 India as a magazine/ezine rightly focuses on products that are new and under development. This, of course, does not suggest or imply that everything old is bad and outdated. The pace at which technology moves, demands that we cover all product developments for our readers. In few cases, this means going back to the

past. Look at the worldwide revival of turntables. Only 20 years ago, the turntable was consigned to the dustbin. Today, pressing plants are hard pressed to meet the demand. The area where retro is most in demand is music – both Western and Indian, and T3 India seeks to address this gap. We hope you enjoy this section.

AN EVENING IN PARIS

THE MUSIC OF

AN EVENING IN PARIS (1967) Words: H. S. Billimoria

Shammi Kapoor had a fantastic ear for music. Although early in his career he had big hits with Usha Khanna ( Dil Deke Dekho ) and O P Nayyar ( Kashmir ki Kali), Shammi had decided that if he featured in a musical film, it had to have Shankar Jaikishan’s music. It all started with BOY FRIEND and UJALA. By the time Shakti Samant started ‘AN EVENING IN PARIS’, Shankar Jaikishan were the firm favourites of Shammi Kapoor. ‘Teesri Manzil’ with R D Burman was an honourable exception. ‘ÁN EVENING IN PARIS’ starred Shammi opposite Sharmila Tagore. The film was a romantic thriller and was embellished with a musical score that sounds fresh even today. Shammi had a great tuning with Jaikishan who was also his drinking buddy. However, the entire score of the film ( 9 songs) bar one number was actually composed by Shankar. We have this information from Prof Sudheendra Kulkarni who was very close to the duo. SJ worked so seamlessly at that time that nobody knew ( or cared) about who in the duo composed which number. Jaikishan’s contribution was the haunting ‘ Akele Akele‘ number. SJ camp favourites Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri provided the lyrics. Rafi sang for Shammi and Asha Bhosle along with Sharda for Sharmila Tagore. When released in 1969, the movie became a hit courtesy Shankar Jaikishan’s brilliant music and Sharmila Tagore’s daring costumes. The music was, in fact, far ahead of its time which is why it is so popular even today. The movie had nine songs, all of them hits. ‘AN EVENING IN PARIS’ opens with the title track , ‘Aji aisa mauka phir kahan milega’ sung by Mohd Rafi. Beautifully picturised in Paris, the song proved to be a chart buster. SJ have made good use of the accordion and the violin in this number.
