This Sunday is Easter Sunday. It is a time for us to reflect as Christians on the gift the Lord Jesus gave all of us who believe in Him. This Easter will be unique, due to the Covid-19 quarantine, we will not be able share this occaision within our churches. In years past, it was very easy for us to neglect the importance and meaning of this holiday, and become absorbed with the commercial aspects of candy, bunnies and eggs, but this year we have the oportunity to reflect internally on and to understand the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as central to the Christian faith. Without the resurrection, our Christian faith would be just wishful thinking, no better than human philosophies and speculative religions. In fact, the noted seventeenth-century philosopher John Locke, some of whose ideas were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence, wrote, “Our Savior’s resurrection is truly of great importance in Christianity, so great that His being or not being the Messiah stands or falls with it.” More so than Christmas or any other holiday, Easter is what Christianity is all about. Without the resurrection there is no hope. With it, even death has no sting. Jesus spoke to his disciples about His sufferings and death: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise (Mark 8:31). Daniel Duggan again” Paul knew that without the resurrection our salvation could not have been possible (1 Corinthians 15). He was also convinced a person couldn’t be saved without believing in the resurrection of Jesus: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is important to remember that Paul, the other apostles, and every leader in the early church continually proclaimed Christ’s resurrection as the culmination of His ministry. Those men were so captivated by the significance of the resurrection that they could not help but preach it. And that should be our attitude today. The good news of Christ’s birth is only trumped by the great news of his death, burial and resurrection. This Holy Week, as we practice safe social distancing, take some extra time to reflect on the greatest gift God ever gave us, His son, and through Him eternal life.

Feliciana-Area Schools: Food for Students Update

By The Feliciana Explorer staff

When Governor John Bel Edwards closed Louisiana’s public schools to keep both students and staff safe from coronavirus infection, the immediate concern was the meals students would miss. In the Felicianas and Zachary, as in communities throughout the nation, school breakfasts and lunches are, for many students, their main sources of food. During normal times, teachers and administrators, aware of families that are struggling financially, also send snack packs home on Fridays to help those students get through the weekend. Administrators, therefore, enthusiastically made plans to prepare and pack breakfasts and lunches for distri-

bution during the school shut-down. At East Feliciana public schools, parents were to pick up the meals in drive-by lines at several schools; at West Feliciana public schools, volunteers joined school staff to prepare meals that school buses were to deliver. Zachary public schools, too, planned drive-by pickup. Educators, however, soon realized See NUTRITION on page 3

that they needed to find professional food preparation and delivery operations to insure safety for all involved. East Feliciana, according to Jackson Elementary School Assistant Principal Jonathan Loveall, suspended its food operation and delivered the remaining perishable food to the food banks in Wilson and Clinton. The freezers and coolers at Jackson’s Helping in His Name Food Bank, Beth Dawson reports, were full “because of the great donations we received for Souper Bowl Sunday,” an annual program that takes place during the Super Bowl, “so we advised them to call Wilson.” The Village of Wilson, according to Alderman Yvonne Allen, who oversees the food bank there, gladly accepted the milk cartons and bags of lettuce.

Then, on March 26, East Feliciana teachers began calling families to register them for Meals-to-You, a program of the United States Department of Agriculture, in partnership with Baylor University, that delivers “kidfriendly, no-cooking-required meals” to students’ homes. Mr. Loveall notes, “We have created a special page on our website: www.efschools.net/COVID-19 that will serve as the official hub for information about our school district’s response. This page will be frequently updated with resources and instructions for learning, as available. We will also regularly update our Facebook Page at (East Feliciana Public Schools) and Twitter Page at (@EastFelSchools).” At West Feliciana Public Schools, Georgia Dudley reports that after the school bus delivery program had been in effect for about two weeks, a local

Alderman Allen, who says that Wilson’s food bank shelves had been “empty” for over a week as of March 30, explains that the Baton Rouge Food Bank makes a regular “food pantry” delivery the first and third Fridays of each month and a “farm fresh” produce delivery on the second Fridays. She reports a need for more food between the third Friday of March and the first deliveries of Meals-to-You, which had not occurred as of March 31. Those who are able to donate to the Wilson pantry should call Ms. Allen at 225-328-4558 or email baileethomas438@gmail.com. Persons may also contribute by giving of their time, joining Ms. Allen and Londa Matthews, Frankie Sambo, Laren Veals and Rosemary Veals. To contribute to the Hyman Chapel Food Bank in Clinton, call Edith Spears at 225-681-2311. To inquire about the needs of the Jackson food bank, email bdawson465@aol.com. To inquire about the Zachary food bank, call 225-654-4028. All community food banks require persons to complete application forms that demonstrate the level of their need.

business “reached out and offered to take it over. The week of March 30, it distributed food at the middle school Monday, Wednesday and Friday… meals for two days on Monday and Wednesday, and for one day on Friday. “We’ve also applied for and have been accepted to ‘Meals to You.’ Families will enroll in the program through a form we sent out and meals will be shipped directly to their door.” Check www.wfpsb.org for updates pertaining to the coronavirus school closure. Zachary public schools has announced its partnership with BREC and the Three O’clock Project, which provides “free healthy meals for children 18 years old and younger” beginning Monday, March 30, at Sweet Briar Trailer Park, Zachary Community Park, Zachary High School (drive up), and Zachary Football Stadium Parking Lot (walk up). Visit www.zacharyschools.org for more information. The free meals help keep families’ grocery bills from increasing while students are at home all day, every day. And parents can honor the governor’s order to stay at home instead of making extra trips to the store.

ZACHARY 1858 Church St (225) 286-5615

GREENSBURG 31 Kendrick St (225) 222-6275

To join the Jackson United Methodist Church mission team that’s making masks for an area hospital, gather your supplies and let the team know you’re on board by telephoning the church at 225634-7221. Or form your own team, or work on your own. One way or another, let’s help our health providers protect themselves as they care for those suffering from COVID-19. How to Make an Adult Mask with Ties Supplies for 1 mask: · One (1) 8x14 inch piece of cotton fabric · Two (2) 1.5x34 inch strips · Thread and sewing machine Prepare the mask: 1. On the 8/14 inch piece, right sides together, sew ¼ inch seam, creating a tube. 2. Turn right sides out, press seam and fabric. 3. Make 3 pleats, approximately 1 inch each in size, using steam or pins to hold. Mask will be approximately 3 to 3.5 inches in width. 4. Sew ¼ inch seam on each side of mask, securing pleats. 5. Trim seam allowance. Prepare the ties: 1. Fold in half and press (3/4

inch. Open btie back up. 2. Fold each edge in to meet middle (3/8 inch/0.375 inch) and press. 3. Fold in half again, securing raw edges inside and press. Each tie will be approximately 3/8 inch in width. Assembly: 1. Align center of tie with side of mask; open tie so edge of mask fits snugly inside. Pin. 2. Sew tie to mask. Seam will be very short. Get as close as you are able while still catching all fabric. You are just attaching the mask to the tie at this point, not sewing the whole tie yet. 3. Repeat for the other tie and other side of the mask. 4. Sew down edges of tie, securing raw edges inside. Seam is very short. You will stitch over where mask is already attached. This is good because it helps reinforce. 5. Repeat for other tie and other side of mask. 6. Clip any stray fabric and enjoy.
