MARBLE FALLS — If you’ve ever dared to think about writing a novel but feared sitting down in front of a computer or pulling out a pad of paper and a pencil because you didn’t know how to start or how to do it, here’s a bit of advice: Make a point to attend the Highland Lakes Writers Club meeting July 11. “We’ve decided to turn to some of our members to talk about what they do,” said Kay Lee of the Highland Lakes Writers Club. “And at this one, Rick (Copple) will talk about writing novels.” In fact, Copple’s subject for the meeting is, “How to Write Your Novel.” “I think anybody who has considered writing a novel would be interested in the presentation,” Copple said. “I’ll give them some tactics on preparing to write a novel, whether to outline or not to outline.” Copple has published numerous books, both through traditional publishers and in eBook format, as well as several short stories, poetry and comics. Though he always enjoyed it, he didn’t pursue fiction and novel writing more seriously until 2005. Copple published his first novel in 2009. “I enjoy the creative outlet (writing) provides,” he said. “It’s fun creating something out of nothing.” His choice of genre is best described as Christian fantasy. “Even if that’s a genre somebody is interested in writing, Rick’s discussion will really be about providing tools anybody can use,” Lee said. “This will give them some advice on how to approach a novel and how to plan it.”

COTTONWOOD SHORES — For people in the 40-and-older crowd, there’s only one Willie Wonka, and that is the one Gene Wilder portrayed in the 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” On July 18, fans of the film and the Roald Dahl

book on which it was based can rekindle the magic as the Hill Country Community Theatre opens “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka” for eight performances through July 28. The production will look and feel a lot more like the Wilder movie than the more recent remake featuring Johnny Depp. “One of the reasons we See PLAY / Page 3

H O R S E S H O E B AY — Throughout their history, Texas Rangers transformed from frontier scouts who tamed early Texas into high-tech investigators unraveling intricate murder and terrorist plots. Four lawmen, who retired from that agency with a legendary pedigree, will continue offering their crimefighting expertise to a local police agency. On June 30, retired Texas Ranger Garth Davis became the fourth to accept a position with the Horseshoe Bay Police Department as an investigator, joining Jim Denman, Jess Ramos and Rocky Wardlow. “The retired rangers that currently work here I’ve known for quite a while, and I have worked with them on various investigations,” said Davis, who recently left the Burnet Police Department, where he was an investigator. Marble Falls Triathlon in the race for volunteers for July 21 event BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

MARBLE FALLS — As the Marble Falls Triathlon gets ready to hit the lake and the roads for its 13th year July 21, there is one thing that really keeps the event rolling: volunteers. “We really depend on our volunteers to make this such a successful triathlon,” said race director and founder Mario Gonzales. The Marble Falls Triathlon attracts between 300 and 500 athletes each year. Gonzales anticipates 350-400 this year. To keep the competitors moving and headed in the right direction, a good cadre of volunteers is needed. “They don’t need any experience,”

Gonzales said. “They’ll assist athletes with directions. They’ll hand out water. They’ll write numbers on the athletes.” Volunteers also hit the water in during the event, but they don’t need to swim. Instead, Gonzales uses volunteers in kayaks to give competitors directions but also to be ready to respond in case somebody gets in trouble during the swimming portion of the event. “That’s one of our biggest needs right now — volunteers in kayaks,” he said. The volunteers can bring their own kayaks, but Gonzales has some he loans out for the event, which starts at Lakeside Park in Marble Falls. The course hasn’t changed much in the 13 years Gonzales has put on the event. The competitors start with

The athletes cap it off with a run through the Pecan Valley area of Marble Falls before crossing the finish line back in Lakeside Park. Throughout much of the course, competitors will find the friendly faces of the volunteers. “The volunteers have a lot of fun,” Gonzales said. Gonzales will hold a volunteer training session July 20 at 3 p.m. near the city pool at Lakeside Park. The park is located on Buena Vista Drive in Marble Falls. Play offers music, laughs and special effects FROM PAGE 1 decided to follow closer to the Gene Wilder film was because there are a lot of parents and grandparents who grew up with that movie or with (Dahl’s) book, and they can bring their kids or grandkids to this play and share that experience with them,” said Steve Reily, HCCT managing director. “It gives them something they can all share.” The production includes all the songs featured in the 1971 film, with a few additions. For those who might not be familiar with the movie or book, Willy Wonka owns a world-famous candy factory. With no children of his own, Wonka decides he needs to find a heir for his business, so he holds a contest of sorts. He stashes several “golden tickets” in chocolate bars sent across the globe. The kids who find the golden tickets get invited to visit and tour Wonka’s factory. Throughout the tour, the children experience and see incredible things, including the Ooompa-Loompas. “It’s a fun musical that everybody will enjoy,” Reily said. While it’s based on a children’s book, the musical definitely has a few things for adults to hang on to as well. “It has some dark humor in it, so adults will definitely enjoy it.” HCCT produces five plays a year. The organization selected “Willy Wonka” about a year ago, Reily said. “The summer musicals like this one require about 10 weeks of rehearsal,” he added. The cast includes several HCCT veterans, including Steve Garcia as Willy Wonka, Wes Sadek as The Candy Man, Henry Rowland as Phineous Trout, Mandi Whittlesey as Mrs. Bucket, Sandy Stemac as Grandma Josephine, Theresa Bishop as Grandma Georgina, Mike Brittain as Grandpa George, Lili Biglari as Alphie, Becky Barton as Mrs. Gloop, Emma Smutzer as Violet Beauregarde

and Ocean Fillingham as an OompaLoompa. Several actors will make their HCCT debut, including Ben Anderson as Charlie Bucket, Lee Wilson as Mr. Bucket, Stone Wilson as James, Eden Dellinger as Matilda and Randy Spruiell as Mr. Salt. Jenny Lavery is directing the musical. The performances are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday with Sunday matinees at 2:15 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $9 for students

16 and younger. Group rates are available. For reservations (which are recommended), call (830) 798-8944. Go to www.thehcct.org for more information. Reily said this production offers lots of music, laughter and even some special effects. “It’s been a lot of fun to get ready,” he said. “I think people will really enjoy it.” daniel@thepicayune.com

Texas Rangers were formed in 1823 by S.F. Austin FROM PAGE 1 nationally known Texas cases. Wardlow, the first of the Rangers hired by Horseshoe Bay, recently became the assistant police chief.

In his duties of overseeing day-today operations and personnel, Wardlow is in charge of Ramos, hired in October, as well as his former Texas Ranger lieutenant supervisor, Denman, who came on board in April 2012. Denman is now a reserve investigator, and Davis will

step into Denman’s former full-time position. Davis said the officers will call on all the tools and the resources that made them successful in their state careers. “An individual brings their own work ethic with them. Crime is crime — which I read in a quote from a smart individual — all crimes are thefts. Whether it’s theft of property, theft of dignity, theft of life or theft of security, that’s where it all starts,” Davis said. “Any crime you encounter as an investigator, you should look at it that way and work it accordingly.” Horseshoe Bay Police Chief Bill Lane said finding the foursome was no accident. “I watch to see if they’re approaching retirement because I know if I can reach out and get someone with that talent, background, expertise, look at the benefit it provides to the community,” Lane said. “To be fortunate enough to draw four guys like this into the department is just unbelievable as a police administrator.” Stephen F. Austin created the Texas Rangers in 1823. A famous Texas Ranger motto, “One riot, One Ranger,” evolved from an oral account involving Camp Worth (now Fort Worth), where officials telegraphed Austin legislators to ask for a company of Rangers to subdue a riot, according to Bill Cannons’ “Texas: Land of Legend and Lore.” One Ranger stepped off the train, leading officials to inquire about the rest. The Ranger responded, “You ain’t got but one riot.” Since the four retired Rangers settled in Horseshoe Bay, other area agencies have drawn on their expertise as well. In their current capacity, the former Rangers recently tracked two suspects to Horseshoe Bay and uncovered the suspected weapon in a capital murder case in May in Spicewood. “Law enforcement at its best is a cooperative involvement between various agencies,” Davis said. “Many times, you can judge the quality of the individual you’re about to work with by how well they cooperate and how well you work towards a common goal for the citizens that you serve.” connie@thepicayune.com

BURNET — When former Burnet High School basketball player Zakk Revelle decided to hold a youth basketball camp, he probably didn’t plan on it benefitting a friend’s family. But that’s just what the July 11-12 Vertical Basketball and Cheer Camp will do for the Johnny Mosley family. The camp is 8 a.m.-noon and open to kindergarteners through sixth-graders at the R.J. Richey Elementary gym, 500 East Graves St. The cost is $30 per student, and Nelson said some scholarships are available. Mosley, just 18 years old, drowned at Inks Lake State Park on May 23. Revelle first met the young man during his senior year at Burnet High School when Mosley, a freshman, proved himself on the basketball court. Mosley stood out on the court in school and at pick-up games at First Baptist Church in Marble Falls. Revelle got to know Mosley and his family more as the years went on. “He was such an awesome kid. I can never think of a time I ever saw him sad,” Revelle said. “He was upbeat and had a great passion for music.” Revelle, finished with his first season of basketball at Sul Ross State University, where he was team captain, started to organize a summer basketball and cheer camp with Chad Nelson, a Burnet youth leader and businessman, when he heard about

‘Queen of the House’ coming to Llano Country Opry LLANO — A pioneer in country-pop fusion music is set to take the stage at the Lantex Theater on July 13 during the Llano Country Opry. And she’ll be marking a major career milestone as well. Jody Miller became famous for her song “Queen of the House,” which was her response to the popular Roger Miller tune “King of the Road.” Despite her country roots, Miller enjoyed some success in the pop charts as well. She’s credited with pioneering a fusion of folk, country and pop that helped set the stage for the 1970s’

Mosley’s death. Revelle called Nelson and asked to donate the proceeds to Mosley’s family. Nelson, of course, agreed. “I met Johnny for the first time when he was on a radio show about a year or more ago around a table of students from area communities,” Nelson said. “He was a neat kid and not just a good player, but he had unique musical gifts.” Revelle said he wanted to keep the camp’s proceeds secret from Mosley’s family.
“It was going to be a surprise; I was just going to go to the bank and put it in (his account),” Revelle said. The camp itself is a bit different than other types. The main tenets organizers will focus on are faith, fundamentals, fun and follow-up. “A little bit of a different way we conduct camp is we give homework and follow up with them a few months down the road,” Nelson said. “They learn the fundamentals but also Bible fundamentals.” Nelson, a former youth minister and now a co-director of the Upward Basketball program, said he wants to ensure the campers carry their lessons with them beyond the two days. “We let the parents know what’s going on,” he said. “I think it’s unique in making sure it’s not a snapshot.” Nelson said campers can register the morning of the camp, visit www. thewhatnowshow.com or call (325) 207-8076 for more information. jared@thepicayune.com “folky country-pop” style. Membership to club is another option for interested writers FROM PAGE 1 Writing a novel appears on many people’s list of things they want to do. But going from a list to actual completion isn’t easy. Lee, who enjoys writing poetry, understands why people want to write but also why they might hesitate. “I think everybody believes they have a story to tell,” she said. “Even if people experience similar things, they often have a much different way to looking at them. So their story is unique, but it still is something other people can relate to.” Copple said people often think about writing a novel but don’t pursue it much further. “Probably, the biggest challenge is just getting started,” he said. Writing a novel or a book is a way to tell the world how a person made a difference, Lee added. But wanting and doing are two very different things. Sometimes people who want to write don’t because they remember how tough their high

school English teacher was on their papers or they just don’t believe they can pen a novel or a story. Lee said she hopes programs such as Copple’s will help both club members and others get past those fears and onto paper. “Writing and sharing those stories are something we should all try,” Lee said. If people attend the “How to Write a Novel” program and want even more support, they should consider joining the writers’ club. “I think of it as a writers’ support group,” Lee said. “People feel safe enough to read (their writings) in front of the group but also are willing to listen and entertain suggestions the group makes.” The July 11 meeting will be at First United Methodist Church of Marble Falls, 1101 Bluebonnet Drive. While the event starts at 7 p.m., Lee recommends people arrive by 6:30 p.m. Go to www.highlandlakeswritersclub.com for more information. daniel@thepicayune.com will not be awarded to religious organizations for religious purposes; political organizations, events or fundraisers; other funders; or individuals. Smith’s album is No. 3 on Texas chart FROM PAGE 1 city of Burnet. It takes place July 13 at 8 p.m. at the Haley Nelson Park amphitheater, located off Texas 29 West. Admission is $12 a person. Smith’s latest album, “Dirt Road Driveway,” is currently No. 3 on the Texas Music Chart. “By showtime, I’ll almost put money down that he’ll be No. 1,” Beierle said. “He’s knocking on the door, anyway.” He had hoped to schedule Granger as one of the original four concert performers for the Summer Music Series. But Granger’s management team and Beierle didn’t have a mutual open date.

Granger created another persona, Earl Dibbles Jr., who sings “The Country Boy Song.” Granger has plenty of followers on social media, but Dibbles doubles the number, Beierle said. But the producer didn’t make a guarantee that Dibbles would make an appearance, adding he wouldn’t be surprised to see him. “When they gave me the opportunity to have (Granger),” Beierle said, “I couldn’t pass it up because he’s selling out venues across the state. I think this will really showcase the amphitheater.” A concession stand will be on site, and concert-goers can bring their own coolers, blankets and lawn chairs. jfierro@thepicayune.com

Llano student learns intricacies of government at Texas Boys State FROM STAFF REPORTS KINGSLAND — When Easton West arrived in Austin for the start of Texas Boys State on June 10, he was taking a journey that has helped Lone Star State youth learn the inner workings of the Capitol since 1935. West, the son of Joey and Donna West and a Llano High School student, participated in the American Legion Boys State program along with 935 other Texas youth. The unique program educates future leaders about government, civics and patriotism in a “learning-by-doing” environment. Each delegate has just finished his junior year. The students, teachers, counselors and local American Legion Posts select the youth for the one-week seminar. West said the experience was positive. “We learned a great deal of leadership and the mechanics of government,” he said. Part of the program includes the youth splitting up into two fictional parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists, and drafting their own party platforms. They also elect party officials and hold candidate primaries with the party winners facing the rival party’s candidate. Easton presented a nomination speech that eventually helped him land the mayor’s seat for the fictional town of Sherwood. During the week, Easton led the city and organized its activities. It was a good foray into a leadership role. And Easton learned important aspects of leadership. “We learned, as leaders, that people will always look up to you, so you can’t let them down,” he said. In his role as mayor, Easton met several state senators and other Texas dignitaries.

During the week, the Texas Boys State participants even sat in the Capitol chambers, where they crafted, debated and voted on mock legislation. The week wrapped up June 14 with a morning parade from the University of Texas to the Capitol. After the parade, Gov. Rick Perry spoke with the Texas Boys State participants. But one of the biggest lesson’s Easton learned is one of the most fundamental parts of democracy. “I think one of the most important things I learned was the importance of voting,” he said. Go to www.texasboysstate.com for more on Texas Boys State.

MARBLE FALLS — Whether a person’s family has lived in the area for generations or they just moved here in the past several years, Fran McSpadden of the Falls on the Colorado Museum believes each has a role in local history. “They’re all a part of our story,” McSpadden said. “They can all be a part of it.” The museum is holding its annual Founders Day Celebration on July 13 at 2001 Broadway. It’s an open-house, come-and-go-as-you-please format from noon to 5 p.m. In past years, organizers held the event at Lakeside Pavilion but decided to move it to the museum grounds to give people a peek at the renovations made to the old Granite Building. The structure has served as a cornerstone of Marble Falls since 1891. Since its construction, the Granite Building, as it has come to be known, has played a role in the area’s school system. Students attended classes in the Granite Building for many decades. Eventually, Marble Falls Independent School District opened new campuses, shifting students to those facilities. The district continued to use the Granite Building in some manner, including its latest as the central administration office, until about five years ago. But its educational role returned in 2010 when MFISD agreed to lease the structure to the museum. McSpadden said the Founders Day Celebration will allow museum officials to show off the updates they’ve made to the Granite Building. But there’s still work to be done, she said. “We have a wish list of things we still need,” McSpadden said. One includes getting input and direction from residents in what they’d like to see in the museum or future displays. “We’d love to have people help us determine the future of the museum,” she said. Organizers hope the event also will draw former MFISD students who attended classes in the Granite Building. Visitors can enjoy light refreshments. And as they walk the Granite Building’s halls, they can help develop and add to the community’s story. For more information, go to www. fallsmuseum.org or call (830) 7982157. daniel@thepicayune.com
