Wich Wich? recipe involves timing, good taste and customer service As they settle in at old Atwood’s site, owners say they’ll continue what previous tenants started BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — Wich Which? and Coffee can bank on having the right ingredients at just the right time for a successful eatery, the owners said. “We were simply blessed to have a good site which came available, so we jumped on that opportunity to make it happen,” said owner Russ Edwards, who’s family operates a Which Wich? establishment in Georgetown and recently sold one based in Harker Heights. The business, scheduled to open July 13 at 311 U.S. 281 in Marble Falls, specializes in 51 sandwich selections. The Marble Falls location will be the first of the national franchise with a drive-through window and a coffee menu as well as Breakfast Whiches and signature Manske Rolls. The restaraunt, under contruction, is the previous site of Atwood’s Holiday Treats, owned first by the Atwood family and recently sold to the Edwards by the Sivells family. “I grew up across the street from the Sivells, so I’ve known them for a long time. This was my establishment after church on Sunday evenings that I use to go to,” Edwards said. “It was a family operation with the Sivells and Atwoods. It’s a good opportunity to continue what they started here, which is a great restaurant with See COMPANY / Page 3

Sister Barbara Crockett enjoys exchange program with Buchanan Dam congregation BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

It’s the second installment of the Summer Music Series sponsored by KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune, The Picayune, Double Eagle Entertainment and the city of Burnet. It takes place July 6 at 8 p.m. Dysfunkshun Junkshun is already familiar

BUCHANAN DAM — Six days after arriving at Highland Lakes United Methodist Church and for her first sermon, Sister Barbara Crockett did a strip tease. “Yeah, I think I may have shocked a few people,” she said in her distinct English accent, followed by a laugh. “But I bet they remember the message.” Crockett, a deacon in the British Methodist church, came to the Buchanan Dam congregation in June as a part of pastoral exchange program. While she’s at the Highland Lakes UMC church, its pastor, the Rev. Grady Roe, is tending her two churches in Stoke-on-Trent in England. While it’s her first time to the Highland Lakes, Crockett is no stranger to the United States. She’s made journeys several times

Tucker Edwards, his wife, Jenn, and their two sons moved to the area for the business. “It’s a great family atmosphere,” he said. Offseason training for the dogs consists of mock trails, running FROM PAGE 1 quickly turns to playtime. “In the offseason, we just run them,” said Shane, who trains his dogs to be hunting partners that can track game animals hundreds of yards away. “We let them run beside my four-wheeler, we play with them, do mock trails, exercise them.” During hunting season, hunters call on Shane and his dogs to track wounded deer that might otherwise never be found. Today, Shane uses a dried deer hide and some blood saved from a previous hunt to make a trail for Belle and a younger dog, Sam, to follow near his Spicewood home. Belle, 18 months old, is experienced beyond her age. Nose to the ground and with little hesitation, she finds the final resting place of the hide in no time and enjoys her pepperoni treat. Sam, a younger dog, sniffs the air and takes a little more time. “It’s just for us to keep our dogs working and having fun. That’s their fun,” Shane said. “She’s a natural at everything and Sam, he’s a dang good dog and does what he’s supposed to do, but he still does it off of (Belle). He’s only 9 months old, and he’s coming along, and he’s doing real good now.” Belle is the pro. In May, she placed second out of all dogs at the National Lacy Dog Association’s Working Dog Field Day tracking challenge at Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet. An 8-year-old Catahoula cur dog edged her out for the top spot. The competition uses 8 ounces of blood over a 500-yard course with three turns to challenge the dogs.

Belle found the target close to the seven-minute mark. Shane’s journey to training tracking dogs began about three years ago when his blue heeler helped find a deer downed on a ranch near Paducah. “He went right to it. We would have never found it in that scrub brush,” Shane said. “When he did that, I said, ‘I’m going to find us some tracking dogs.’” After researching, Shane found one breed that kept coming up: the blue Lacy. “What also sold me on it was that it’s the state dog,” he said. “It’s like everyone tells me, it’s addictive. Once you get one, you (must) have more, and now we have nine of them.” Shane said they’ll sell the pups but will interview potential owners for matches. “They’re so driven to do something all day long, they can’t be in the house sitting around,” he said. “If you don’t have time for them, you don’t need them.” But Shane makes the time for his, and it’s part of the reason he and his dogs are sought during the hunting season. “It all works as a team with a breeder and a tracker,” he said. “I’m learning from her as she’s learning from me.” Those interested can visit his website at www.txhillcountrytrackers.com, the NLDA website at www. nationallacydog.org or the Texas Lacy Game Dog Association website at www.lacydog.com for more information. jared@thepicayune.com

“The Sivells had a sign on the inside of their restaurant that read, ‘Always preach the Gospel. If necessary, use words.’ Coming from the faith-based background, that’s one thing I’m looking forward to continuing at this location that the Sivells established originally,” Tucker Edwards said. “It’s the starting foundation with how we’re running the store in that sense. “We’ll transfer that knowledge, faith and background to our employees and also the people who are coming through the door to enjoy sandwiches and coffee,” he said. connie@thepicayune.com

MARBLE FALLS — Whether you live in Bertram, Johnson City, Marble Falls or points in between, you can find just the right spot to celebrate the Fourth of July. Many of the Highland Lakes cities are celebrating the country’s birthday with fireworks and other events. If you want to attend a parade, Kingsland and Horseshoe Bay are two places to check out. Both are holding land and boat parades. If live music is what you want, Marble Falls, Johnson City and the Kingsland Aqua Boom offer plenty of choices. And if it’s just fireworks, well, you have to throw Bertram and Llano into the mix as well. Below is a quick rundown of fireworks and other highlights for July 4.

Flyers share model plane passions at Aqua Boom

Michael McDougall is one of several expert model airplane enthusiasts who will be on hand at Hank Nilsen Field in Kingsland on July 6 for Flights of Fancy during the Aqua Boom celebration. Kids can fly model planes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and have a chance to win one of their own in a free drawing at 2 p.m. STAFF PHOTO BY SUZANNE FREEMAN

BY SUZANNE FREEMAN Picayune Staff

KINGSLAND — If you want to know what it takes to fly an airplane without actually leaving the ground, you can find out July 6 with the Highland Lakes Flyers. Each year, the model airplane group hands its joysticks over to eager kids wanting to turn their computer skills into real-life 3D action. Called Flights of Fancy, the event is held as part of the Aqua Boom celebration in Kingsland. Training and flying begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. when one lucky flyer will win his or her own remote-control plane. It’s entirely free. Just show up ready to take over the controls at Hank Nilsen Field off RR 2545 at 702 Williamette Road. The model air strip is about two miles east of RR 1431. “Kids take to this a lot easier than adults,” said longtime member Mike McDougall, who’s been flying model planes since the 1960s. “They were born playing computer games similar to this.” Translating skills from the computer joystick to the buddy box is easy for most children, but for those of us adults who equate flying with uninterrupted time to read, it’s a bit more challenging. The idea of a buddy box is similar to a driving instructor’s car. It is connected to the plane’s wireless controller, so a trained professional can take over at any time to prevent accidents. On a recent sunny morning at Hank

PICAYUNE CONTEST

Nilsen Field, I was given the opportunity to fly one of McDonald’s planes. But first, I had to earn my flying privileges on the computer like most novices. “Hold some back stick,” McDougall said as I crashed my pixel plane on an imaginary field. In other words, pull back on the joystick to raise the nose of the plane. Just as I thought I had the lingo down, I ran into a bigger problem: how to tell left from right. “When the plane is flying away from you, right is right and left is left,” McDougall said. “When it comes back toward you, you have to be thinking in the cockpit. It’s just the opposite.” At the computer, you get a first taste of the vertigo-like sensations you experience when overworking those particular directional brain cells. With a buddy box in hand and a plane in the sky, the feeling escalates. Peering up at a plane in motion, it all seems effortless. On the ground, faces are tight with concentration, eyes locked on the aircraft while hands, arms and brain work in syncopation to create the miracle of flight. I quickly began to understand the focused looks on flyers’ faces as they guided their planes through loops, hovers and complicated swirls across the bright blue sky. Before take-off, McDougall showed me how to prepare the plane. Once in the air, the plane glided with grace and ease — or, at least, it

did as long as the right hands were on the controls. A heavy touch and the craft will jerk in the air, sputter and sometimes even dive and crash. Thanks to the main controller hooked to my buddy box, my aircraft made its turns and swoops with dignity, came in for a safe landing and lived to give the exhilarating experience to yet another novice on another day. That novice can be you. Bring the kids to Hank Nilson Field on July 6 and watch them turn into an experienced modeler. I haven’t rushed out to buy my ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) kit yet, but I can almost guarantee your kids are going to want one. They can even become a member of the Highland Lakes Flyers for only $2 a year, giving them access to a great flying facility and some of the best mentors around. suzanne@thepicayune.com

Participants of a Camp Agape Bereavement Camp for Children celebrate the experience. The children spent time with other children who had lost somebody close to them. This year’s camp, July 12-15 at Highland Lakes Camp in Spicewood, still has several openings for youth 7-12 years. While it’s a grief support and bereavement camp, officials say there are plenty of fun things to do, including swimming, music and other activities. Go to www.campagapetexas.org for more information. SPICEWOOD — One of the biggest struggles a child who has lost somebody close to him or her faces probably is the feeling of loneliness. After all, who can know what he or she is going through? Who can relate? One possible group is other children also struggling with similar losses. “Part of the healing process, especially for children, is to know you’re not alone. And one big part is knowing that other children are going through what you are,” said Kim Turk, Camp Agape founder. “One of the things we’ve found is when kids find other kids going through the same thing, it helps them deal with it and process it.” Camp Agape offers a free summer camp to youth ages 7-12 who have lost a loved one to help them through the bereavement process. Turk said a part of it is the kids knowing there are other youth who can relate to them and understand what they’re experiencing. The Camp Agape for Children is July 12-15 at the Highland Lakes Camp in Spicewood. It’s free, and there are still openings. “We’d love to have kids who could use some grief support,” Turk said. “But they have a lot of fun as well.” Camp Agape is celebrating its 13th year this summer. Turk founded the program in 2000, but the idea first started percolating in her head in 1996. She was watching a primetime news program that featured a youth bereavement program in Delaware. As she watched, Turk felt there needed to be more programs such as the one in Delaware. Instead of just wishing and wait-

ing for somebody else to do it, Turk took the steps to create one. The first thing she did was call the director of the Delaware bereavement program. “I just visited with the director and asked about it,” Turk said. When Turk watched the TV news show, she saw that nobody associated with the bereavement program or reporter noted any spiritual or faith connection. “It turns out they received state and federal funding, so they stayed away from any faith aspect,” Turk said. “But I thought that’s a big piece to be missing because faith and God, that’s something kids can really hold onto when going through such a tough time in their lives.” Camp Agape is a non-denominational, Christian-based program. The faith element serves as a foundation. “Christ gives us hope,” Turk said. “And that’s what these kids need, hope.” Life kept Turk from going much further with a youth bereavement program until 1999, when she simply walked into a lawyer’s office and laid out her idea. In May 2000, Camp Agape landed its nonprofit status. Tu r k s t i l l h a d t o m a k e i t work. “I thought if it was God’s will, he would pave the way,” she said. “If it was my will, it would simply go away.” Thirteen years and several hundred children later, Camp Agape is still serving youth. And the need is still there. “We serve all children who have suffered some kind of loss to death,” Turk said. Go to www.campagapetexas.org for more information. daniel@thepicayune.com

FROM PAGE 1 to employees of the city of Burnet because the band was the entertainment during the Christmas party, said Double Eagle Entertainment producer Damon Beierle. And the band was such a hit, Beierle said it was a no-brainer to include it in the music series. “They go from country to Bon Jovi,” he said. “They have Big Boppertype stuff. Their range goes from every type of music.” The producer said people of all ages will recognize songs the group sings. In addition, the band encourages concert-goers to participate. “Everybody will have fun and enjoy the music,” Beierle said. “They make you get in the show. They don’t just stand and play instruments and

sing. They put on a show.” Ryan Beaver began the series in May, drawing about 300 people, the producer said. “We’d like to see a few more people,” he said. “We want more than that, but we were happy. We feel like more people will come out and come back.” The concert series has expanded to include two more country music artists. Granger Smith will play July 13, and Deryl Dodd on Aug. 31. Admission for each event is $12. The series is at the Haley Nelson Park amphitheater, which gives the city of Burnet a chance to showcase the venue, Beierle said. The park is located off Texas 29 West. A concession stand will be on site, and concert-goers can bring their own coolers, blankets and lawn chairs. Admission is free. jfierro@thepicayune.com

OARS helps elderly keep moving; program in need of volunteers BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

LLANO — For 82-year-old Leslie Turbiville, being a volunteer driver for Older Adult Rural Services is his chance to give back to those in need. “I feel bad about how much I have and how little other people have; sometimes through their own fault and sometimes through no fault of their own,” he said. Turbiville transports a handful of Burnet and Llano county residents to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store and other locations, both locally and in the Austin area. “I have one that moved out here, and she was having no problem driving herself. Suddenly, the doctor and her children told her she can’t drive anymore. She was really upset about that, so now I’m driving her,” he said. “I have a couple who moved out here from San Antonio. They did not realize how difficult it was to get around — no taxi service, no bus service.” OARS, based in Marble Falls since 2002, serves residents who are 60 and older. The program, which falls under the umbrella of the Texas Housing Foundation, offers services such as utility bill assistance, health referrals and other resources, including food

banks connections, so-called “Caring Calls” and the volunteer rides program. Turbiville is one of five OARS volunteers. The program coordinator said she needs more like him. “I’m in dire need of volunteers,” OARS director Jeanene Olson said. “A lot of our elderly are isolated. In some ways, they’re forgotten. A volunteer will be able to show them that people still care about them,” she said. “Sometimes, they can’t get a ride to go to the doctor, so therefore they don’t get a ride to the doctor, and before long, it becomes an emergency. Sometimes, it’s too late.” Caring Calls has changed the outlook of a number of clients at risk of depression and withdrawal. “If you have someone checking on you every day or every three days, it makes you feel like a human being again,” Olson said. Volunteers benefit from their participation as well. “It’s such a reward to see a smile coming from somebody’s face,” she said. Turbiville, who served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years and eventually retired after a career as a hospital administrator, said he believes it’s his duty to continue serving others. “I do think like that because I think

I owe something to somebody, and I’m not even sure who I owe it to,” Turbiville said. To volunteer, call (512) 755-2901 or (830) 798-0543. The OARS office is located at 1600 Mustang Drive at Highland Oaks in the Club Room. connie@thepicayune.com

MARBLE FALLS — The Legacy Community Fund is accepting applications from Highland Lakes nonprofit groups for grant money to be awarded in October. The deadline is July 19. Established in 2005, the fund is a family of funds in support of nonprofit organizations, educational enrichment projects and scholarships for higher education. To qualify, nonprofits must be a 501(c)(3) organization that provides services in the Highland Lakes, according to a Legacy Community Fund news release. Grants will not be awarded to religious orga-

Marble Falls VFW donation gives Meals on Wheels breathing room for Bertram deliveries BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

MARBLE FALLS — Members of the Marble Falls VFW Post 10376 called all the right numbers recently, and Meals On Wheels officials gladly shouted out, “Bingo.” The post donated $1,000 to the Burnet County wing of the meal-delivery program. The money comes from the VFW’s three-times-a-week bingo games. “Everything we make, after expenses, has to go to charity,” post commander Tom Standard said. “We thought this was a great cause.” Sara Reily of the Burnet County Meals on Wheels program agreed. “This is incredible,” she said. “It will keep us going (in Bertram) for another month. Right now, we have enough funding to get us through September.” Reily said October starts a new

fiscal year, so she hopes with budgetary adjustments that the Betram-area Meals on Wheels deliveries will continue. Earlier this year, WilliamsonBurnet County Opportunities, the organization that funds the local Meals on Wheels, announced because of federal sequester cuts, it didn’t have the money to provide services to the Bertram area. When word spread about the problem, several donations came in to help keep the Bertram deliveries rolling. Lloyd Crippen, Post 10376 senior vice commander, felt the bingo funds could make a difference for the Meals on Wheels program. “It’s a good program, and we wanted to help them out,” he said. The Marble Falls post, 1001 Veterans Ave. across from Marble Falls Elementary School, holds bingo games Wednesday and Friday starting with a warm-up at 6 p.m. followed by

the regular game at 7 p.m. as well as Sunday with a warm-up at 2 p.m. followed by the regular game at 3 p.m. The doors open an hour before the warm-up games. The post has a full kitchen where patrons can purchase food and refreshments before playing. nizations for religious purposes; political organizations, events or fundraisers; other funders; or individuals. Organizations may seek money for a particular project or for ongoing operations with a maximum request of $2,500. The Legacy Community Fund has granted more than $125,000 through its first five grant cycles. For grant applications, visit www.highlandlakeslegacyfund. org or contact Midge Dockery at mdockery@hllegacyfund.org or (830) 220-1100. editor@thepicayune.com
