Hill Country Fellowship again gathers under tent — this time 2,000 strong, free of debt BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

BURNET — When the Rev. Rodney McGee considers how Hill Country Fellowship went from 27 people about a decade ago to more than 2,000 currently and now is debt free despite a multimillion-dollar building campaign the past several years, he wasn’t shy about who accomplished it all. “We are very thankful for what God has done here,” he said. On May 19, the church, 200 Houston Clinton Drive, is holding a tent celebration to burn the note on the current building. Hill Country

Fellowship purchased its current 30 acres several years ago. Church members gathered under a large tent on the property May 18, 2008, for the first service on the land. They prayed about what God wanted them to do with the property and the church. In the end, McGee said it was a step of faith, but God provided. In November 2009, the congregation moved into a new facility on the 30 acres. “The church started 10 years ago with 27 people the first meeting. In January 2005, I came on, and, at that time, we had 25 to 30 in the See SERVICE / Page 3

first (service) and 70 to 80 the second ... . Now, we say we’re a church of 2,000,” McGee said. “And now, we have this facility that is appraised between $11 (million) and probably $12 million. On (May 18), we’ll burn the note and be debt-free. That’s a great thing in this economy.” The church will again gather under a tent (a much larger one) at 10:30 a.m. for one service. After the service, McGee said there will be a lunch for everyone who attends followed by a baptism and the note-burning. While the congregation is celebrating the facility and becoming debt-free, McGee said the church never has been about the buildings. “We’ve always been an evangelistic church. We have people of all types come find the Lord here,” he said. “But we all realize facilities don’t change lives. It takes Jesus Christ to change lives.” The service and celebration are open to the public. For more information on the church, go to www. hcfburnet.org. daniel@thepicayune.com

Saluting Buzzard Award honors notable local leader, volunteer FROM PAGE 1 the buzzard, inspired the name of the festival. “It’s a unique title we came up with to create a buzz about the event,” Weiss said. Just like the name of the festival, the Buzzard Bump appeal remains true to the Spicewood identity, referred to as “just outside of weird.” “It’s so diverse. You have people from Bee Creek to Double Horn Creek,” Weiss said. “You’ve got the folks on the other side of the river. They commute into Austin, and then there’s old Spicewood: a lot of ranchers, retirees and families.” The festival is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the pasture at 9751 Texas 71, just west of the Spicewood Volunteer Fire Deptartment hall. A 5K run and a one-mile run — both for the first time this year — start at 9 a.m. at the Spicewood Community Center (the Old Spicewood School), 7901 CR 404 just off Spur 191. Along with the runs, activities include the Road Kill Car Show, a washer tournament, the kids’ area, vendors, live entertainment and the judging of cook-off entries. Cook-off prizes include $100 for first place, $50 for second place and a People’s Choice Award. The cook-off entry fee is $25. “As long as the primary ingredient is a bird, you can put it in the cook-off,” Weiss said. Contestants may utilize preprep cook time at home for bird dishes that require timely boiling or smoking; however, the primary preparation must be done on site. Live musical acts include Two Hoots and a Holler, described as a honky-tonk rockabilly band; folk rock artist John Napier; The Texas KGB (Kelly Green Band); Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars; and Andrea Marie. Organizers announced a Saluting Buzzard Award, which involves nominations for a notable local leader and/ or volunteer in Spicewood. The winner receives $1,000 for his or her charity of choice. “Bring a chair and blanket, sit and listen to music. You can certainly bring your own cooler,” Weiss said. “‘We want everything to be unique for this event.” Entry into the Buzzard Bump is $3 or three canned goods. Leashed pets are welcome. Go to www.buzzardbump.com for more information and to register for all events. connie@thepicayune.com

Granite Shoals police association hosting ‘Paws for the Cause’ on May 18 GRANITE SHOALS — The Granite Shoals Police Officers Association is helping the community fight rabies by holding a vaccination clinic May 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bluebriar Park. Each year, Texas health authorities issue numerous rabies alerts because an animal turns up with the potentially deadly disease. Officials said one of the best ways to prevent rabies from spreading is through proper pet vaccinations. The association is holding the lowcost event at the park, located at West Briar and South Shorewood Drive. Veterinarian Dan McBride will provide the shots. The cost is $8 for a rabies vaccination and $15 for parvo and distemper vaccinations. Granite Shoals residents also may register their pets with the city for $15, which is half the typical fee. Officials said donations also are appreciated. For more information, call (830) 598-2424. editor@thepicayune.com

less than an hour, and one might think Cardenas would be better off giving up such events. But as he crossed the finish line, Cardenas knew he would be back — and he would be better. Now, about 12 months later and less than a week before the start of the 2013 Spartan Race, Cardenas is 40 pounds lighter and can cover a 5,000-kilometer run in less time than his trainer and friend, Greg Lopez. “We held the Mad Dawg Fitness run (about two weeks ago), and he actually beat me,” said Lopez, the gym owner of Mad Dawg Fitness (Mad DawgFit.com) and a Spartan competitor. “I think that’s one of the things about the Spartan is it motivates you to get better. And that’s something you take with you in all areas of your life, not just your fitness.” His gym members also are seeing the benefits of the race. About 20 have signed up for the Mad Dawg team that will compete in the 2013 Spartan Race on May 18-19 at Reveille Peak

Ranch, 104 CR 115. Cardenas said the race changed his life. He had already lost 15 pounds leading up to last year’s event, but the Spartan motivated him to dramatically change his lifestyle to one geared for health and fitness. The Spartan Race is the brainchild of co-founders Joe DeSena and Andy Weinberg. The race, which attracts several hundred thousands of competitors at events across the country and around the world, is one of the most well-known in obstacle-course racing. The Burnet event draws 2,000-3,000 participants during the weekend alone. Competitors face not just running but many obstacles along the course. While the Spartan looks like a weekend race filled with fun and frivolity, DeSena said it was always something more. “It’s a life-changing experience,” he said. DeSena and Weinberg drew on their backgrounds and experiences in creating the Spartan. “I’ve been hiring people all my life,

and he had been training swimmers all his life. But we found that people quit all the time, and it just got frustrating,” DeSena said. “We wanted something that would challenge people and make them want to work harder.” In 2010, the Spartan Race hit the ground. Beyond the fitness, the race and training help people dig within themselves and go a bit further. “I like to say a little suffering every day is good for you,” DeSena said. “Sometimes having everything too easy is not good for you.” The Spartan forces people to overcome obstacles during the race. Each one moves them closer to the finish line. People can give up at any time during the race, but the rewards come to those who don’t throw in the towel and push through. The same holds true in other parts of participants’ lives, DeSena pointed out. “Life is full of obstacles,” he said. “If you just keep going, keep pushing yourself and keep working at it, you’ll get there. Just like in the Spartan.” Lopez agreed. “I think what’s important about the race is if you step out of your own comfort zone as a person and finish the race, you get a tremendous boost of self-confidence. And you realize that if you can do this, then there’s nothing you can’t do if you set your mind to it,” the trainer said. “The race teaches you so much about going further than you typically do.” For more information on the Spartan, go to www.spartanrace.com. TELL ’EM YOU SAW IT IN THE PICAYUNE

Rededication of marker for ‘Home on the Range’ composer is May 18 BY JENNIFER FIERRO Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — If you’ve ever sang “Home on the Range” or “Get Along Little Dogie,” thank Cottonwood Shores native Oscar Julius Fox. Known as the Cowboy Composer, Fox wrote the music to those songs that became famous during the early 20th century. Fox (1879-1961) was born on a ranch in Cottonwood Shores, and, on May 27, 1962, the state dedicated a red granite marker in his honor. It was recently removed from the old rest stop on U.S. 281 South in Marble Falls when the state closed it. But after some residents saw the marker wasn’t displayed anywhere, they started a campaign to rededicate it in Marble Falls, a place that inspired Fox to write his favorite song, “The Hills of Home.” That dedication is 10 a.m. May 18 near the entrance of La Quinta Inn, 501 FM 2147 West. Fox’s relatives, Mark Fox and Elizabeth Schnelle, will be in attendance along with other local musicians and dignitaries. Falls on the Colorado Museum secretary Fran McSpadden said Fox’s contributions go beyond his musical compositions. He attended school in the then-new town of Marble Falls until 1893 before moving to San Antonio to study music. Three years later, Fox’s grandfather Gertuli Kellersberger sent the young musician to Zurich, Switzerland, to study piano, violin and choral direction.

By 1899, Fox was in New York City for an additional two years of music study. When he returned to Texas in 1902, he became a choirmaster at two churches in Galveston and one in San Antonio. Fox was the conductor of the San Antonio Choir Club and the University of Texas Choral Society and the director of the UT men’s and girls’ glee clubs. One of the members of the UT men’s glee club was Tex Ritter, who became one of the most popular of the singing movie cowboys. But it’s Fox’s collaborations with John A. Lomax for which he’s best known. Lomax traveled with cowboys on cattle drives, recording the tunes they sang. But he realized that while just about everyone sang the same words, most sang them to a different tune. So Lomax asked Fox to listen to the words and write the musical notes that are familiar to most people today. Local real estate business owner Mark Fox, a second cousin of Fox’s, met the composer when he was 10. They both were at Cypress Mill visiting family. When Fox was told the marker was going to be moved from the old rest stop, he said, “You can’t stop progress.” He’s happy the city will rededicate the marker. “I think it’s great,” he said. May 18 is also a big day in Reno, Nev., because of its mayor, Bob Cashell, Oscar Fox’s grandson. To honor the mayor and his wife, Nancy Parker Cashell, Reno is conducting a gala featuring his grandfather’s music.

MFHS students, staff holding contests for scholarship funds FROM STAFF REPORTS MARBLE FALLS — The annual battles at Marble Falls High School in Powder Puff football and Tuff Enuff are fast approaching. The girls of the class of 2013 and 2014 start off the fundraisers by facing each other during a Powder Puff match at 7 p.m. May 18 at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive. The event benefits the Casey Rice Memorial Scholarship fund. Tickets are $2. In addition, volunteers will have a concession stand and will be selling hamburgers, co-organizer Trish Walker said. The Marble Falls High School chess club is sponsoring a tournament, also on May 18, at the high school library, 2101 Mustang Drive, to benefit the Jimmy Strobo Memorial Scholarship. The entry fee is $10. And on May 21, the boys of the class of 2013 face male faculty and staff members in a Tuff Enuff

softball game that also benefits the Jimmy Strobo Memorial Scholarship at 4 p.m. at Scearce Field, 2101 Mustang Drive. Originally, the men also played a powder puff game but changed the format this year. “(The) staff is getting older, and it’s getting harder,” Walker said. Admission is by donation. For more information, call Chuck Woods or Trish Walker at (830) 6931095. editor@thepicayune.com

“I was very surprised,” the mayor said about the gala. “I’m learning more and more about my grandfather.” Cashell was about 13 years old the last time he saw Fox. But at that age, he said he didn’t realize his grandfather’s contributions to music, not even when the elder man offered piano lessons. Cashell was more into sports than music. The Reno mayor was happy to hear Marble Falls’ plans to rededicate his grandfather’s marker and has decided to take a trip to the Highland Lakes very soon to meet more of his relatives.

1940s-style event to help fund Freedom Flyers’ summer programs for kids BY JARED FIELDS Picayune Staff

BURNET — A swingin’ evening complete with 1940s fashion and music will launch the Freedom Flyers’ summer youth programs to new heights. Tickets remain for the Freedom Flyers Gala on May 18 at the nonprofit organization’s hangar at the Burnet Municipal Airport, 3202 U.S. 281.

The proceeds go toward the Freedom Flyers’ summer programs. “Where we’re going with the whole program is much larger and faster than most of us anticipated. The response is overwhelming,” said Cowden Ward, the organization’s founder. The organization aims to bring aviation to youth and the community through a series of activities and programs that emphasize lessons in science, technol-

ogy, engineering and math. Freedom Flyers partnered last summer with the Boys & Girls Club of the Highland Lakes for the first time to offer an introductory program to aviation. Interest in the program grew as kids learned the basics of flight, built model airplanes, launched rockets and flew kites. This summer, executive director David Smiles has more plans in store. Programs start in June for youth age 7 to high school and range from free to paid and daily to once-a-week. “The program is something we’re trying to make well-rounded for the summer to reach out to the community and bring something special to

The programs vary, from providing an introduction for girls to the world of aviation to building drone aircraft to even providing students with the opportunity to experience their first flight. “It’s an unusual opportunity for the kids to learn science and math,” project coordinator Mitzi Logan said. “They don’t realize they’re doing math, but once they get it, they realize they did math and they’re happy about it.” Logan said tickets, which are $50 each, remain for the gala. Llano County 4-H offering program to youth for career in veterinary medicine SPECIAL TO THE PICAYUNE LLANO — The Llano County 4-H and Youth Development Program is helping youth begin a career in veterinary medicine. Students who sign up for a veterinary medicine program will be committed to a 3- to 5-year study course and an apprenticeship that is career-oriented. An orientation workshop is 6 p.m. May 23 at Fuel Coffee House, 106 E. Main St. The meeting is open to Llano County youth ages 11-16. Buddy Faris, a professor and extension veterinarian from Texas A&M University, will lead the workshop. During the session, Faris will outline the curriculum, goals and objectives of the program. Students then will have an opportunity to enroll. Parents are needed to be the volunteer adult leader or assistant adult leaders. While completing the curriculum of 100 lessons and 50 activities, stu-

dents will focus on the major careers of veterinary medicine: veterinary assistant, veterinary technician and veterinarian. The students will be placed in an apprenticeship to work under the supervision of veterinarians to complete hours of observation and a minimum of 500 hours of clinical skills on the job, usually in a veterinary clinic. Students who successfully complete the study course and apprenticeship of clinical skills hours will receive a certificate of completion of the program with the classification of veterinary assistant. The students will be eligible for certification by examination as a certified veterinary assistant through the Texas Veterinary Medical Association. Students planning to become a veterinary technician or a veterinarian will be counseled to pursue the required college degree programs. To reserve a spot, call Llano County extension agent Jamie Osbourn at (325) 247-5159.

PICAYUNE CONTEST

LLANO — Several years ago, Llano resident and military mom Tommi Meyers created the Llano Military News Group to connect service members to their home town and vice versa. Members of the nonprofit organization hope they can take it a step further by honoring local service members May 17 during the Armed Forces Rally Day at the Llano County Courthouse in the downtown square. It starts at noon. “This is a chance to get together and recognize our soldiers and armed forces members who grew up in Llano County or graduated from Llano High School,” said Allyn Rub, the Llano Military News Group president. “We put this Rally Day together fairly quick, so I’m not sure how big it will be, but I’m hoping people will show up and show their support for our hometown service members.” Rub said Meyers started the group as a way to keep her son

Glutathione eliminates toxins Glutathione is an antioxidant produced naturally in the human body that is composed of three amino acids: cysteine, glycine and glutamine. Glutathione helps to detoxify free radicals that can cause serious illness, but poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete glutathione. According to Dr. Mark Hyman, glutathione deficiency is common in very ill patients, including people with chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease, cancer, chronic infections, autoimmune disease, diabetes, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, asthma, kidney problems and liver disease. According to S. Jill James of the Arkansas Childrens Research Institute, levels and quality of the glutathione are much lower in autistic children vs. typical children. Ask your pharmacist how to improve your glutathione levels and if this therapy is appropriate for you. Atkins received a pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. Since 1994 he has owned and operated Atkins Pharmacy Services, 701 Third St. in Marble Falls. A second pharmacy is at 2607 U.S. 281 North. and others who were in the military informed about what was happening in Llano County. “But it’s also a way to let people here know about our service members,” Rub said. Rub became involved with the group when he was serving as president of a Llano American Legion post. The Legion offered a place for the group to meet and support it. The military group has undergone changes with Meyers stepping down to devote more time to her family, Rub said, but the purpose remains the same: support local service members. The group sends care packages to local soldiers and service members as well. Members initially scraped by on what they could manage to get from donations and other means, Rub said. Now, as a registered nonprofit, Rub said the organization has begun to step up its fundraising activities.

“Now, we’re up and stable,” he said. Officials would like to build their list of Llano County residents or Llano High School graduates who are serving in the military. But the big hope is to get

Faith Academy senior earns Naval Academy appointment Faith Academy senior Seth McAnally (center) celebrates his recent Naval Academy acceptance with U.S. Navy Admiral Brett Fereday (left) and Faith Academy coach Russell Roberts. McAnally has wanted to attend the academy since he was an eighth-grader. He’ll attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School for about a year before transferring to the Naval Academy. COURTESY PHOTO

seeing it all the way through. It’s not an easy process.” Last fall, with his nomination in hand, Seth submitted his Naval Academy application. Then, the wait began. On March 23, Seth was outside his home washing his car in preparation for the Faith Academy prom when the mail arrived. The postal worker was carrying a large, white envelope. He handed it to Seth’s dad. “It was from the Naval Academy and addressed to me,” Seth said, remembering the moment. “I was so nervous. My heart immediately dropped and my stomach kind of sank.” Seth opened the envelop and began reading the letter, “Congratulations you have …” “My heart just leapt,” he said, regarding the acceptation letter. In June, he reports to the preparatory academy so he can shore up on some of his academics. Then the following summer, he’ll head for Annapolis. The year of NAPS doesn’t bother the Faith senior, who is actually graduating a year early. As much work and perseverance getting accepted took, Seth knows it’s all about to increase tenfold with NAPS and then the academy. “I can’t wait,” he said. “I’m so excited.” daniel@thepicayune.com

academics. The Naval Academy likes students who develop their leadership skills in other ways. For Seth, this included athletics and student organizations both on campus and in his church. Seth admitted there were times he considered other colleges and universities, but each time he weighed them against the Naval Academy, the Annapolis school won out. “It just had everything I wanted,” he said. During the summer between his junior and senior years, Seth attended a camp for potential midshipmen at the Naval Academy. It was a crashcourse introduction in what he and other prospective midshipmen could expect their freshman (or plebe) year. The six-day program, again, didn’t phase him. When Seth returned home, he immediately began pursuing the appointment process and Naval Academy application processes. Though similar and related, Seth forded through the two. The appointment through Conaway’s office and the application process are tough on their own. Seth’s father noted the difficulty. “So many people start the process but rule themselves out by not finishing the appointment and application processes. There may be 20 in a (Congressional) district who actually get through just the appointment selection,” he said. “Give Seth credit for

MARBLE FALLS — Faith Academy senior Seth McAnally took the college entrance exam, the ACT, five times. But he one-upped himself with the SAT, which he took six times. He subjected himself to the 11 tests because a Naval Academy recruiter advised McAnally that it would show determination and perseverance. “It paid off,” the Faith Academy student said. McAnally is the first Faith Academy student to earn a nomination to a military service academy. His first stop is a stint at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in New Port, R.I., for 11 months before attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. For McAnally, the admission letter was the answer to five years of hard work and determination. The senior didn’t just recently begin considering the Naval Academy as a post-high school option. No, it started several years ago. “In eighth grade, he knew he wanted to go to the Naval Academy,” said Seth’s father, Jeff McAnally. “He’s so driven. And I think it shows in that he wanted this since he was in eighth grade and never gave up.” His parents, Jeff and Tammy, didn’t just look at Seth’s Naval Academy aspirations as a lofty dream of a middle school student. They contacted U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway’s office to learn more about the appointment process. During his freshman year, Seth and his family met with a Naval Academy recruiter, who laid out what the young man needed to do if he wanted to attend the prestigious school. It wasn’t an easy process on any level, with the recruiter stressing the importance of grades and extracurricular activities. But Seth wasn’t dissuaded at all; if anything, the meeting inspired him. “So (trying to get in the academy) really pushed me to begin working hard and keeping my grades up,” Seth said. But it wasn’t just class work and

Marble Falls students raise money with song for crash victim’s family BY CONNIE SWINNEY Picayune Staff

Marble Falls High School students Miles Sheppard (left) and Sean Evans wrote, produced and performed a song they offered to memorialize the life of Mylie Ferguson, a classmate who died in a rollover accident. M E A D O W L A K E S — Tw o Marble Falls High School students want to honor the life of a classmate who died in a crash by helping her family with proceeds from a song they wrote and produced. Miles Sheppard, 16, and Sean Evans, 17, are selling a song called “Buzzy” for 99 cents per download online at iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Google Play. The duo chose the song to memorialize 15-year-old Mylie Ferguson, who died Jan. 23. She was a passenger in a pickup that crashed on CR 340 just north of the Marble Falls city limits. Ferguson was one of six teenagers in the vehicle when it rolled over. “It effected everyone around me. I wanted to hang out with friends, but they were all mourning her death. It

was hard,” Evans said. “Everyone knew Miley. I really didn’t know her or her family. The only way I could express myself is through music and trying to be able to help.” Evans, a budding musician who plays the guitar and takes voice lessons, performed the rap portion of the tune. He and Sheppard, who also takes voice lessons, have written and produced three songs together using a home computer and Internet music programs. They recorded “Buzzy” in an Austin studio. “We had the song already. It was a fun song about having a good time, having a good night, just being teenagers,” Sheppard said. “We decided we would send the revenue to Mylie’s family.” Parts of the song features a so-called “Skrillex” or “dub step” baseline with techno-enhanced voice and synthesized sounds. Lyrics include “Girl, I think you’re super cool” and “Girl, you’re beautiful. You know it, too.” The rap portion includes lyrics like, “You can be my Cinderella if the shoe fits.”

The song “fit” the kind of person everyone perceived Ferguson to be. “People who didn’t know her gained knowledge of what kind of person she was through Facebook and social networking,” Sheppard said. “This is something we could do to spread the message that you can help because of the good in people.” At one point, “Buzzy” was No. 1 of 906 songs in its category on iTunes, Sheppard said. The teens say they look forward to depositing the first check from proceeds into the Ferguson account. “I hope (Mylie’s parents) know that she is missed,” Sheppard said. “She had a big impact on more than they will ever know.” Donations can be made to the Ferguson family at First State Bank Central Texas branches care of “Julie Klammer FBO Mylie Ferguson.” Branch locations are 617 U.S. 281 in Marble Falls; 101 E.
