KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune hitting streets for Bluebonnet Fest

FROM STAFF REPORTS BURNET — The KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune crew is taking the show on the road for the 30th annual Bluebonnet Festival. Wake Up Show host Ed Chandler will be on the Square in Burnet 4-7 p.m. April 12 to help get the festival rolling. He’ll be joined

by other KBEY crew members. It will be a great opportunity to come out, have a great time at the festival and meet Chandler. But it won’t be the first time the KBEY crew makes the Burnet Square. Chandler and co-host Kay Baker will be broadcasting the morning show 6-10 a.m. April 12 at the new KBEY 103.9 FM Radio

Picayune studio in Burnet. The studio, 138 S. Main St., will serve as KBEY’s Burnet headquarters. It’s an exciting venture as the station and The Picayune continue their commitment to the community. So throughout the days to come, look for KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune on the Square in Burnet.

P-51 and other planes take to skies for Bluebonnet Airshow BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

BURNET — Cowden Ward Jr. grew up in West Texas, where he watched Disney’s “Pecos Bill” and developed a love for flying — especially classic warbirds such as the North American P-51 Mustang. “I don’t know what it is about them,” Ward said of the sleek World War II fighter plane. He

held his hand up about waist level. “Since I was about that tall, I knew I wanted to fly, and one day, I wanted to fly a Mustang.” Ward, a member of Freedom Flyers in Burnet that provides aviation learning opportunities to youth and veterans and gives medical flights, has been a pilot for many years. One of his dreams was to own a P-51 Mustang. Several years ago, he See AIRSHOW / Page 6

potential health complications by alerting Doug Aston when he needs to test his blood-sugar levels. “She pushes right there on my legs,” he said, pointing out the spot. Aston, who has diabetes and hypoglycemia, believes Babe’s actions are more than just playful nudging because each time, the test

comes back positive, prompting him to treat his medical condition. Aston, 81, has treated himself for diabetes since he was a child. People with diabetes typically manage hypoglycemia (low blood-sugar levels) with diet or See BABE / Page 4

Marble Falls teams sharpen barber’s razor for St. Baldricks, pediatric cancer research BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

MARBLE FALLS — Coy Guenter, a captain with Marble Falls Fire Rescue, laughed at the thought. “I’ll do it,” he said with a grin. “If you raise more money than I do, I’ll let you shave my head.”

Kade Walker smiled and nodded. At 3 years old, there’s a good chance it will be the youth’s first attempt at shaving somebody’s head. But whoever works the razor April 13 at the Tree House, 806 Main St., Guenter, Walker and a group of other folks are glad to get their head shaved. It’s all for a good cause: the St. Baldricks Foundation.

“St. Baldricks raises funds for pediatric cancer research,” said Craig Lusinger, a probable shavee and organizer of the Marble Falls event. Lusinger participated in a St. Baldricks head-shaving event several years ago at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin. The See ST. BALDRICKS / Page 7

Free event celebrates kids April 20 FROM STAFF REPORTS MARBLE FALLS — The 13th annual Children’s Day Celebration is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 20 at Johnson Park, 230 S. Ave J. The free event is for children infant to 14 years. More than 50 area businesses and organizations will have learning centers or booths. There’s plenty of room for others to be involved, founder Ely Banuet Rodriguez said. “We need individuals who can share their gifts and talents,” Rodriguez said. The hope is to have volunteers who know the proper way to brush teeth, style hair or care for a pet, they said. “A lot of our families are very low-income,” executive commitee member Lydia Madrid said, “and, as a result, they don’t have access to a lot of things.” “The goal is to expose children very early, so they can start thinking about these things,” Rodriguez said. The event includes a talent show directed by Barbara Bend, the director of Harmony School of Creative Arts. To enter, call (830) 693-1791. Prizes will be drawn at 1:15 p.m., and items include bikes, video games, helmets and fishing poles. Free food and refreshments will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. To volunteer, contact Rodriguez at (512) 755-3504 or at childrensdaytx@ gmail.com. editor@thepicayune.com

CASA gives a voice to children who may otherwise go unheard BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

KINGSLAND — Whenever a child is removed from a home due to abuse or neglect, a group of dedicated volunteers is standing by to be his or her voice. “Our role at CASA is to represent the best interest of the child in court during a very turbulent time in their lives,” said Galyn Woerner, advocate coordinator for the Court Appointed Special Advocates for the Highland Lakes Area. As part of April being Child Abuse Prevention Month, each week The Picayune is highlighting an organization that works on behalf of children. CASA volunteers undergo special training with a judge swearing them in at the completion of the process. Woerner said there are two upcoming training classes: one in April and

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

another in June. The April class will take place in Lampasas, while the June program will be held in CASA’s Kingsland office, 1719 Ridgeview. CASA for the Highland Lakes Area serves Blanco, Burnet, Lampasas, Llano and San Saba counties. Officials said there are more than 200 children in foster care in those counties because of abuse and neglect. And each child or family group gets a CASA volunteer. There are numerous ways to support the organization’s mission other than becoming an adovocate. For more on CASA for the Highland Lakes Area, call (325) 388-3440 or go to www.highlandlakescasa.com.

EXAM AND XRAYS

Babe started warning Aston 11 years ago FROM PAGE 1 medication. Symptoms of an oncoming episode include confusion, dizziness, weakness, trembling, racing pulse and anxiety. Without treatment, more severe symptoms can develop such as poor coordination, unconsciousness, numbness in the mouth and tongue and coma. Since Babe is not trained as a medical-service dog, instinct could be what prompts her to respond to health cues from her owner. The Astons’ veterinarian told them their pet more than likely senses chemical and physiological changes in her owner, prompting her to issue her health warning. “She is something else,” Aston said. Babe started her purposeful practice 11 years ago, her owner said. At 3 years, Babe’s actions once prevented her master from possibly lapsing into a dire state as his sugar levels took a dangerous dive while he slept on his recliner in the living room. “She jumped square in my face. I didn’t know what was happening,” he said. “I couldn’t do anything.” Aston was semi-conscious when he realized his dog had hopped on his chair, began licking his face with a sense of urgency, launched into the bedroom, where his wife was sleeping, and barked until she woke up. “I got out of bed and came in here. (Babe) came up to the side (of his chair), and I saw what was the matter,” Jean Aston said of her husband, who she found shaking, sweating and disoriented. “I took care of him. We got to noticing after that, when Doug would be out in the shop working, she would nudge him.” Doug Aston began responding to Babe’s action by testing his blood sugar and seeking treatment. “There’s time now, she licks his hand to tell him at night. She is still able to tell us,” Jean Aston said “We praise her. We thank her, and we tell her how proud we are of her. The older she gets, she doesn’t catch them all, but she caught the biggest one.” connie@thepicayune.com

BURNET — Thirty years ago, a couple of visionary Burnet residents, Pat Riddell and Cary Johnson, helped establish one of the most anticipated events in the Highland Lakes — even Central Texas. With the help of plenty of volunteers and the Burnet Chamber of Commerce, the Burnet Bluebonnet Festival sprang to life in 1983. Since that time, the

annual event has blossomed into one of the largest spring celebrations. The Bluebonnet Festival returns April 11-14. The festival cranks up April 11 with the Mighty Thomas Carnival from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the corner of Boundary and League streets just east of the square. Officials kick off the 30th annual Bluebonnet Festival on April 12 at 5:30 p.m. on the Historic Square. There even will be a Highland Lakes Commemorative Air Force flyover to make it official. The big day is April 13 when things start running, literally, with a Kids K at 8 a.m. followed by the Texas Farm Bureau Insurance 5K and 10K Run at 8:15 a.m. Both start and finish on the square. And that’s just the start of it. There’s also a bike-decorating contest, a Biergarten, the Bluebonnet Festival Grand Parade (11 a.m.), the Literacy Highland Lakes Rubber Duck Race (at Hamilton Park, west of the square across U.S. 281), the Bluebonnet Airshow (noon) at Burnet Municipal Airport, a Burnet Gunfighters’ shootout and a destruction derby (Burnet County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m.). On April 14, don’t forget the annual Dog House Race on the square from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. There is just too much to list. If you want a complete schedule, go to www.bluebonnetfestival.org.

Airshow also will have modern aircraft FROM PAGE 1 began an earnest search for one. After a couple of tries, Ward recalled the day he stopped at one more hangar. “They opened the hangar doors, and there was this Mustang with ‘Pecos Bill’ on it,” he said. “I knew I had to bring it back to Texas.” Ward’s Mustang, which he houses at the Freedom Flyers hangar in Burnet, will be one of several World War II-era planes on display April 13 for the Bluebonnet Airshow at the Burnet Municipal Airport from noon to 4 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 60 or older, $10 for military members with identification, $5 for students ages 6-17 and free for youth 5 and under. Along with Ward’s Mustang, people can check out other aircraft such as a B-17 Flying Fortress, a second P-51 Mustang, a T-6 Texan, a PT-26 Trainer and many more. Of course, the Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, which hosts the aviation extravaganza, will have several of its planes there including “Bluebonnet Belle,” a C-47 Skytrain. The show also includes many more modern aircraft. Ward’s P-51 has become somewhat of a Burnet icon. People hear about the plane and stop at the Freedom Flyers hangar just to see it. Even when he flies it to another town, airport or airfield, people take notice. “Pecos Bill” has a role with Freedom Flyers beyond turning heads. The Mustang is part of the organization’s veterans flights. Ward said Freedom Flyers flies World War II and other veterans in the Mustang or the SNJ at no cost, just for the experience. For more on the airshow, go to www.bluebonnetairshow.com. For more on the Freedom Flyers, go to www.freedomflyers.org.

Storm brings hail, damage TOP: A thunderstorm April 2 brought plenty of hail to the Highland Lakes. Rainfall ranged from less than an inch in some parts of Burnet County to as much as three inches as reported in the Spicewood and Kingsland communities. According to Lower Colorado River Authority records, the Kingsland area at Lake LBJ and RR 1431 experienced 3.2 inches of rain. COURTESY PHOTO BOTTOM: Mary Ann Fletcher of Marble Falls shows the damage the hail caused to her home in the Mormon Mill area. The April 2 storm left lots of damage in its wake, but the rainfall didn’t contribute much to area lake levels. COURTESY PHOTO

St. Baldricks is second leading provider of funds for pediatric cancer research FROM PAGE 1 event, the children it benefitted and the cause touched him so much, he decided to bring one to the Highland Lakes this year. The concept is rather simple. People form teams of two, three, four or more and start raising money. There is no real prize because all the teams and their members take a seat in the barber’s chair. Which is sort of the point. “A lot of these kids go through cancer treatment, and they lose their hair,” Lusinger said. “By getting our heads shaved, we’re showing that we’re there for them, with them.” The big reason, however, is the money. Guenter and Lusinger said the St. Baldricks Foundation is the second leading provider of funds for pediatric cancer research and treatment behind the federal government. Though he’s only 3 —well, he actually will celebrate his third birthday a week after the event — Kade understands the importance of St. Baldricks and the specter of childhood cancer, said his mother, Chea Nichols. “The teachers at his (pre-school)

say he talks about getting his head shaved and St. Baldricks,” she said. The youth doesn’t have cancer but just wants to help out. Donating is easy. Go to www.stbaldricks.org and put “Marble Falls” in the search window. People can also attend the actual “shaving” at the Tree House. The event starts at 11 a.m. Guenter knows he has his work cut out for him once word spreads that he and Kade are locked in a wager. But the firefighter is undaunted. “I’m way behind right now,” Guenter said. “But I have time. Plus, my hair’s getting a little long. I need to get it trimmed.” daniel@thepicayune.com

TELL ’EM YOU SAW IT IN THE PICAYUNE

Retiring football coach taught players more than Xs and Os BY JENNIFER FIERRO Picayune Staff

MARBLE FALLS — Of the guests who stopped by the Burnet Middle School library to honor coach Randall Alford on his retirement, two of them crashed the party. The eighth-graders weaved their way to their coach, who sat at a table with his wife, Ione, and daughter Kim on March 28. “He supported me through everything,” running back Clint Ringstaff said. “He changed me. He made me do better in class, he made me do better in sports. I’ll miss him.” “He was awesome,” lineman Thomas Westermann said. “He always treated us like his family. I always worked harder for him.” In every way, Alford, who spent the past 20 years in the Highland Lakes area coaching at Burnet, Lampasas and Marble Falls schools, still has the same enthusiasm and drive he had when he started his career. He says he’s not tired and still wakes up excited to see his players and mold them into young men who contribute positively to society. And, in every way physically, except one, Alford’s movements match his drive. But it’s when he begins to walk, his limp is noticeable. And when he sits or gets up, it’s obvious his right knee bothers him. “My original (career) goal was 45 years,” he said with a smile. “I got to 44. It sounded like a good goal.” Alford first came to the Highland Lakes in 1989 as the offensive coordinator for the Marble Falls High School football team, working for his old friend David Denney. The two coached together at Houston Memorial High School. “I knew what kind of coach he was and what kind of man he was,” Denney said. Marble Falls was on its way to a 2-8 record that first season. But the Mustangs got a big win to end the year, beating undefeated and pre-district favorite Dripping Springs 39-0. That started a golden era in the program. During the next four seasons, the Mustangs posted a 43-7-2 record and made the playoffs all four years with an appearance in the 1992 Class 3A semifinals, the best finish in the program’s history. Marble Falls lost to Coldspring 32-29. By 1994, Marble Falls moved up to Class 4A and were 3-7 that season. That finish motivated the players during the offseason, then-quarterback Stan Whittle said. “I’m glad I was in the position when it happened,” Whittle said. “Our coaches believed (we could be successful), but the players didn’t believe in ourselves.” By the end of the 1995 regular season, the Mustangs were 7-2-1 and were co-district champions. They lost in the area round to Bastrop. “I love that feeling, to be able to bring it back,” Whittle said, “Alford had it. Number one, he got us ready to play. We always felt like we were better conditioned and better prepared. And he could make those adjustments.” Once Denney resigned in 2000, Alford did, too. He spent three years coaching and teaching in Lampasas and five at Burnet Middle School as the boys athletic coordinator. “In middle school, I think you can have an effect on kids at all levels,” he said. “You have a greater effect on junior high athletes as far as their development. That’s when (players)

aren’t sure. My goal is this: Help each boy become a good man and a good daddy.” He’ll research his options on the best way to treat his knee. And hopes to attend two-a-days with a team in August.

Burnet Middle School eighth-grade lineman Thomas Westermann (right) stops by to express his gratitude to retiring boys athletic coordinator Randall Alford. STAFF

Alford laughed when asked which program he loved the most: Marble Falls, Lampasas or Burnet. “All three of them are very similar,” he said. “All three have great kids, they really do. I love them all.” jfierro@thepicayune.com

Marble Falls workshop helps people on road to retirement

$

BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

MARBLE FALLS — When people talk about retirement, they typically focus on the financial side. But the change from a career to retirement brings with it many more issues than finances, which is one of the reasons Pauline Johnson, Ph.D., began studying the process. “It’s a major transition that goes beyond your finances,” she said. “There’s a tremendous amount of uncertainty that comes with retirement because, for many years, you

almost always identified yourself by your career or profession. Now when you retire, you don’t necessarily have that identity. And it’s hard.” Johnson is hosting a workshop, “Retirement Pathways,” on April 15 for people who are getting close to retirement or have retired. The free program is 6-7 p.m. at the Marble Falls Public Library, 101 Main St. The workshop will offer tips and tools to help people as they ponder retirement and what to expect. Retirement shakes up a person’s life beyond finances, especially the social aspect. “For a lot of people, their careers

made up a big part of their social circle,” Johnson said. People often forget their social lives play a big role in their well being, Johnson said. The jump from a regular job or career into a life without one seems ideal on the surface, but, she pointed out, without preparation in areas such as social interaction, it can become a bit of a struggle. “You need to develop the kind of social interaction that feeds you,” Johnson said. There is also the lack of structure that often comes with retirement. For years, a person might have worked a job or pursued a career that gave them a level of routine in his or her daily life. But with retirement, that regiment dissolves. “One of the things we often look forward to in retirement is the lack of structure, which is the beauty of it, but it can also be a problem,” she said. These are some of the challenges that come with retirement. But it’s not something people really think about as they make their way through career and life toward the green pastures of retirement. “When I talk to people about retirement, they work so much that they can’t imagine what retirement is like,” Johnson said. “The point of this workshop is to plant the seeds, so they can have an idea what it will be like.” daniel@thepicayune.com
