Llano students host special Valentine’s Day celebration BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

LLANO — With the music pumping through the hall, students from more than 20 area schools found their rhythm and took to the dance floor. “They don’t worry what anybody thinks, they just get out there and have fun,” said Tina Foxworth, an instructor with the Llano High School Castle program. “This is a great chance

for the students to get out, socialize and make friends. Some of the kids know each other from other activities such as Special Olympics. It’s just fun for them.” The Llano High School Castle is a transitional program for young adults with special needs who have graduated from high school but are still learning skills to become more independent. Heart of Texas Ranch in Smithwick wanted to throw a wedding on Valentine’s Day, so it opened its doors for free to an Army veteran and his fianceé. Then, the heartfelt gestures kept coming. BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

Are you ready for some Burnet basketball? Well, we are, and we want you to join us as we follow the Burnet High School girls and boys teams as they battle their way to state in March. If you can’t make the trip with the teams, you can catch the Burnet playoff games on KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune. The Lady Dawgs started their playoff run Feb. 12, while the Dawgs start their playoff competition next week. For complete dates, times and locations of the games, go to DailyTrib.com and tune in to KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune. We’ll keep covering the Burnet basketball run as long as the Bulldogs keep playing.

SMITHWICK — In January, the operators of Heart of Texas Ranch were looking for a couple to hold a wedding at the Smithwick venue so the new facility could get some photographs for promotional purposes. At the same time, a young couple was planning their wedding but didn’t have the resources to throw a big shindig. “It was probably going to be something fairly small,” said the bride-to-be, 27-year-old Lindsey Little. “We’re just starting out, and we’d love a big wedding, but those

cost a lot more money.” She and her fiancé, Army veteran Zach Wallis, 24, who has one tour of combat and is currently a reservist, were at an Austin wedding show when they came across the Heart of Texas Ranch booth. Annie Berg, the new facility’s wedding coordinator, and the owner, Dale Fortenberry Jr., were discussing ways to promote the venue. As a new business, Heart of Texas didn’t have books of previous wedding photos and receptions to show to potential clients or post on its website. In fact, the facility was so new, it hadn’t hosted one wedding. See LOCAL / Page 3

ABOVE: Army veteran Zach Wallis, 24, and his fianceé, Lindsey Little, 27, will be getting married Feb. 14 after Heart of Texas Ranch in Smithwick offered its facility for free with one stipulation: The couple had to get married on Valentine’s Day. The organizers also wanted a military veteran. Other Highland Lakes vendors are chipping in with services to make the big day even more special for the groom- and bride-to-be. TELL ’EM YOU SAW IT IN THE PICAYUNE

Local vendors donate their services to make couple’s big day extra special American Heart Month February is American Heart Month, and we have answers to your health questions. Dr. Elissa Thompson is a cardiologist with Austin Heart and practices at the Marble Falls location, 1800 Mormon Mill Road.

The importance of statins My doctor says I have to take a statin drug, but it makes my knees hurt. Why should I keep taking the medicine if it makes me feel bad?” — Connie I., Marble Falls

Statin drugs are among the most powerful and important weapons we have to fight against heart disease, the No. 1 killer of people in the United States. These drugs decrease the production of low-density cholesterol particles by your liver. More important, these medicines have been shown to decrease the size of atherosclerotic plaque (lipid deposits) in artery walls. Statins are known to prevent heart attacks in people who already have had a heart attack or a stroke or who are at high risk for a heart attack or a stroke, such as diabetics. Statins also have demonstrated the ability to improve the function of the endothelium, the cell lining of your arteries. They act as anti-inflammatory agents at the level of the plaques in your arteries and assist your body’s own ability to form thick, firm, fibrotic caps to keep these plaques stable and less likely to rupture. When these plaques do rupture, the platelets in your blood stream quickly act to heal the “wound.” This causes the formation of a small blood clot that can block blood flow and cause a heart attack. Some people who take statins can have a reaction. The most common reaction is muscle ache. It is important to know, in the vast majority of people, these aches do not represent muscle damage and will not harm your body. If you do develop side effects from these medicines, it is important to tell your doctor. He or she can find another statin or another dose of the statin you currently take that is better tolerated by your body. A conversation with your primary doctor or cardiologist can help clarify your concerns. As always, it is best not to stop any medications your doctor prescribed without letting him or her know. Any person who takes a statin needs to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice to prevent other harmful side effects. — Dr. Thompson

FROM PAGE 1 So, Berg and Fortenberry decided to do something a bit radical: offer the facility at no cost if the bride and groom would agree to one condition. “They had to have their wedding on Valentine’s Day,” Berg said. “We also wanted somebody who was in the military,” Fortenberry said. “And we wanted somebody who wasn’t going to have a big wedding. Berg reached out to local organizations to help locate a couple with ties to the military, but despite numerous attempts, she couldn’t connect with a bride- and groom-to-be. But, during an Austin wedding show, Berg simply threw out the question to folks walking or stopping by the booth, “Would anybody like to get married Feb. 14?” Little and Wallis became engaged Dec. 24 after meeting the previous March. Upon hearing Berg’s idea, the couple huddled nearby to discuss it. They knew they were going to get married. In fact, Little actually had her wedding dress before she had her engagement ring, so it wasn’t a matter of getting married, but just when. After talking it over, the couple agreed. “This is like a dream come true,” Little said while recently visiting the Heart of Texas venue. “We were just going to hold a small wedding with a few family and friends, but this, this is, wow, amazing.” Wallis agreed. “You can’t really say how much this means to us,” the veteran said. “To take our wedding from what was going to be somewhat small to give us this place, you just can’t explain how incredible it is.” Fortenberry, who transformed the house and property into a wedding destination, offered just the facility at no cost, leaving the rest of the details to the bride and groom and their families. But things quickly changed as word spread among Highland Lakes vendors about what Heart of Texas Ranch was doing for the young couple. “All these other vendors wanted to be a part of this,” Berg said. “I’ve been a wedding coordinator in this area long enough to know people were going to help out.” Now, along with the venue, local businesses are providing the future bride and groom with numerous services from catering (Becca Schafer Events) to photography (Jennifer Rice of Sparrowsheart Photography). Outback Rentals of Marble Falls is

helping with the linens and china, while Dessert Divas and the Flower House, both of Marble Falls, are providing the cake and floral arrangements. Wallis and Little sat speechless for a moment when asked about the rest of the businesses helping them out. “Ah, I really don’t know what to say,” Little said with a big smile. “It’s

just the most incredible thing.” But Berg reminded the couple of the one stipulation. “You have to show up on Valentine’s Day,” she said. “You’re going to be there, right?” For more on the venue, go to www.heartoftexasranch.net. daniel@thepicayune.com

Program gets students outside structured environment FROM PAGE 1 its eighth annual Valentine’s Day Dance and Celebration at St. James Lutheran Church in Llano on Feb. 8. Organizers sent out invitations to 26 middle and high schools across Central Texas with more than 120 special-needs students attending the event. Castle student Savannah Smith smiled as she watched her friends head back to the dance floor after finishing with their pizza. “I enjoy all the people coming here and getting together,” she said. “We have a lot of fun, but we also get a chance to see some of the friends we’ve made from other schools.” The Marble Falls High School transition-home staff brought two students for the event. “Events like this get them outside the structured environment and let them just have a great time,” said Jennifer Virdell of the Marble Falls transition program. “It really lets them meet kids like themselves.” Foxworth agreed. She added that when the students connect at events such as these, the friendships are often just starting. Many of the kids from different schools then find times to get together outside of class or the social gatherings to hang out and do things just like their peers. “They are no different than other kids,” she said. “They may not be able to do everything other kids can do, but they know how to have fun. My students, they look forward to this dance every year.” As music rolled from the speakers next to the DJ booth, more kids flooded the dance floor. At one point, the mass of dancers forced organizers to push back the tables to make room for more students. “That’s a good problem to have,” Foworth said.

MFalls VFW members take up spatulas to help out their own BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

ADOPT ME Tyler is a very special little Chiweenie. He’s about 7 months old, and when he first came to us, he was too shy to even be petted. Now, he sleeps in the bed with people and gives all kinds of kisses and love! MARBLE FALLS — While the Marble Falls VFW knows how to throw a bingo party, the members have decided to see how well they also can flip pancakes. “Everybody knows about our bingo,” said Veterans of Foreign Wars member Mike Dyer. “We give those funds out to the local nonprofits. But now, we’re going to hold this pancake breakfast, so we can help local veterans.” The first-ever Marble Falls VFW Pancake Breakfast is 8-11 a.m. Feb. 16 at the veterans hall, 1001 Veterans Drive in Marble Falls. It’s across from the Marble Falls Elementary School on RR 1431. The meal, which includes pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice, is $5 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. “The great thing about the money we raise (is it) goes strictly to veterans who need some help,” Dyer said. The local group doesn’t publicize it much, but the members work hard to help out fellow veterans who might be struggling or facing tough times. “The other day we had a guy — a young veteran — come by on his way to a job interview in Kerrville. But, he really didn’t have enough money to get there,” Dyer said. “So we gave him $200 to get there and get a hotel room if he needed.” Dyer rattled off several more incidents for which the Marble Falls VFW offered help to veterans, even if a

member had to dip into his own pocket to come up with some cash. The need could be for medical expenses, food, travel or even utilities. “We’re experiencing an increase in the amount of veterans needing help,” he said. “This pancake breakfast will allow us to help a batch of young veterans.” While known for its bingo and social events, Dyer said the VFW continues to focus on veterans needs and issues. “They are why we do all these things,” Dyer said. daniel@thepicayune.com

Minor leaguer helping area kids gear up for Little League BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

KINGSLAND — Young ball players can gather insight into what it takes to make the professional ranks when minor-league signee Michael Zouzalik visits the Kingsland Little League fields Feb. 16 from noon to 2 p.m. “This is pretty exciting for us,” said Guy Everett of the Kingsland Little League Association. “He’s going to be giving a motivational-style talk as well as be signing baseballs.” The event, though held in Kingsland, is open to all young base-

ball players from the area. “We want kids from Llano, Burnet, Marble Falls and all over to come out and hear Michael,” Everett said. Kingsland youth also can use it as an opportunity to register for the 2013 Little League season. The event will be held at the Kingsland ball fields, adjacent to the Kingsland Convention and Community Center, 3451 Rose Hill Drive. “It’s every kid’s dream to make it to the big leagues, and Michael’s done it,” Everett said. “He signed with the (Texas) Rangers organization last summer and is headed to Spring Training in March in Surprise, Ariz. This is a great chance for kids to hear

about what it takes to be successful, whether it’s in sports, life or school.” Zouzalik graduated in 2008 from Cedar Park Vista Ridge High School before going on to pitch for Cisco College in Cisco for two years and then transferring to the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. At UT-Pan American, the righthander was 7-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 15 starts and seven relief appearances during his two seasons as a Bronc. In August, Zouzalik was one of 400 ballplayers who attended an open tryout at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock for the Rangers organization. After his performance, the ballclub signed the 22-year-old to a minor-

league contract. “Since he played his high school career at Vista Ridge, he’s probably played against several of the Burnet and Marble Falls players,” Everett said. Zouzalik’s twin brother, Zachary, also pitched at Vista Ridge and played at both Cisco and UT-Pan American. “But Zachary decided to go into the business world, while Michael decided to keep pursuing baseball,” Everett said. Kingsland Little League officials will toss out baseballs for youth to get Zouzalik to sign at no cost. The concession stand will be open during the event. daniel@thepicayune.com

BURNET — A National Rifle Association Foundation grant has armed Burnet County deputies and constables with resources for safety and training. A $6,517 grant allowed the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office to purchase ammunition as well as buy new body armor and ammunition for the constables. “(Ballistics) vests have an expiration. They’re only good for a certain number of years. They have to be replaced,” Burnet County Sheriff W.T. Smith said. “Any kind of donation you get to mitigate the effect of higher cost of ammunition and vests is, of course, beneficial.” Burnet County Precinct 4 Constable Chris Jett said a spike in the cost and

COOKING WITH JEN CAYCE Nothing beats homemade bread crumbs. They are so easy to make and incredibly versatile. availability of ammunition caused concern about training and proficiency requirements by the state. “Just a box of .40-caliber ammo, the duty ammo, is almost a dollar a round, so a 50-round box of ammunition is pretty expensive,” Jett said. “Fortunately, through this grant, we’ve been able to get some ammunition for training.” The funding will provide enough ammunition for one to two additional qualifications this year, officials said. Officials distributed ammunition among constables Feb. 7. Three of the four lawmen were recently fitted for the body armor. “With our limited budgets, it’s always nice to have that additional support,” Jett said. connie@thepicayune.com

Perfect bread crumbs into 1-inch cubes. You will need 2½ cups. Place bread into food processor and pulse 5 times or until you have course crumbs. You want some larger pieces for added texture and flavor. Place oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. When oil is hot, place bread into skillet and stir frequently. When bread starts to turn golden and crisp, immediately remove from heat and place on plate with paper towels. Season with kosher salt. Store in airtight container.
