Event helping vets transition to civilian life goes 565 miles 5K kicks off campaign at Reveille Peak on Feb. 2 BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

BURNET — Veterans’ advocates say one of the biggest issues facing military personnel is their transition from armed services life to civilian life. It’s a circumstance that hit former Army Ranger Cory Smith last year when he left the military after two combat deployments. He realized that not only was he facing a tough readjustment to civilian life, but thousands of veterans just like him were struggling with the same thing. So Smith, maybe unintentionally, created a national awareness campaign in February to highlight veterans issues revolving around leaving the military and rejoining civilian life. Run Ranger Run is a month-long team event that lets members run or cycle a total of 565 miles during the 28-day month. It all starts Feb. 2 with the Run Ranger Run 5K Kick Off at Reveille Peak Ranch, 105 CR 114 west of Burnet. “Last year, when Corporal Smith was having a difficult time transitioning from Army duty to civilian life, somebody told him to focus on something that he is passionate about,” said Candyss Bryant, a Gallant Few board member and executive director of Serve Who Serve. Both organizations share common goals of helping active-duty military members and veterans. “Cory said, ‘I’m passionate about running.’” So last February, after his detachment from the Army, Smith ran from Georgia to his Indianapolis home — a distance of 565 miles — to hold his daughter. The run became the basis of Run Ranger Run. Proceeds from the event benefit Gallant Few, which helps veterans as they transition to civilian life. “We know that this year we’re a little bit behind the curve,” Bryant said. “When we started to look for a place to hold a kickoff event, Reveille Peak was the perfect place.” The 5K kickoff is open to all. People can register by going to www.runrangerrun.com or the Reveille Peak Ranch website at http://rprtexas.com. “If people want to just come out and support the runners and the cause, that would be great,” Bryant said. “Because the course goes out into the ranch, you can’t see much of the run, but you can be there at the start and finish.” The run starts at 10 a.m. with raceday check in at 8:30 a.m. daniel@thepicayune.com

RELEASE AND CATCH The wildlife department’s annual stocking of rainbow trout in Texas waters — including the Llano River — is popular with winter anglers both young and old

BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

LLANO — While it’s not quite on the largemouth bass’ level for size and popularity in the Lone Star State, the cold-water loving rainbow trout gets a bit of the spotlight every year thanks to a winter stocking program by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. And anglers fording the Llano River at Leonard Grenwelge County Park can take part in the action. TPWD stocked about 800 rainbow trout at the park Jan. 15. The park is

located east of the Texas 16 bridge on the south side of the waterway. “This is great,” said Scott Williams who braved the cold weather after the release. “My son and I came out last year, and we really enjoyed it. These are fun fish to catch.” Williams, who lives in Round Rock, was in Llano County visiting relatives when he decided to wet a line after the trout release. “The rainbow trout-stocking program is quite popular,” Larry Hodge of TPWD said. “It’s something different,

The cold weather on Jan. 15 didn’t keep Scott Williams from enjoying some rainbow trout fishing on the Llano River. As part of its winter stocking program, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department released about 800 rainbow trout in the river at Leonard Grenwelge Park in Llano. STAFF PHOTO BY DANIEL CLIFTON

FACTS ABOUT RAINBOW TROUT (ONCORHYNCHUS MYKISS) Description Oncorhynchus is Greek for “hook snout,” and mykiss is the Kamchatkan name for rainbow trout. A rainbow trout has a salmon-like shape. It has dark spots on its slightly forked tail fin and 10-12 rays on its anal fin. Its back is usually a dark olive color, shading to silvery white on the underside. The fish’s body is heavily speckled, and there is a pink to red stripe running lengthwise along its sides. Life cycle The rainbow trout is an anadromous, cool- to cold-water fish species. Anadromous fish spend most of their lives in the sea and migrate to freshwater to breed. Although it has been known to tolerate higher temperatures, it does best in areas where the water remains below 70 degrees. Eggs are laid in shallow nests dug out by the female in a gravel riffle, a rocky shoal or sandbar lying just below the surface of the water. The eggs require continuous oxygenation. At temperatures of about 55 degrees, the eggs will hatch approximately 21 days after they are laid. The rainbow trout is a carnivore, feeding on a wide variety of prey such as insects, crustaceans, mollusks and other fish. With access to the sea, it has been known to weigh more than 42 pounds. The record for rainbow trouts confined to freshwater is 31.27 pounds.

Rainbow trout typically found in cooler regions FROM PAGE 1 and anglers like it when they can catch something different.” The parks department stocks more than 250,000 hatchery-raised rainbow trout in more than 100 sites across Texas. The locations are chosen for several reasons, but primarily because of accessibility. “We want to put (the trout) where people will go fishing for them,” Hodge said. Rainbow trout are typically found in cooler regions where the water temperatures don’t climb above 70 degrees. The fish will live for several months in Texas before those temperatures hit that mark. “That’s why we encourage people, when they catch the trout, to take them home and eat them,” Hodge said. “As well as being a great sport fish, they’re great to eat.” The stocking program also is a great opportunity to introduce children to fishing. “The trout usually are fairly easy to catch, which makes it a great fish for kids,” Hodge said. “They’re also a very pretty and colorful fish, which is another reason kids like them.” But he wouldn’t go as far as guaranteeing any catches. Trout don’t require lots of expensive equipment to catch them. Hodge said children can start with a basic,

closed-faced spinning reel with a line, hook and bobber. A good choice for bait is a kernel of canned corn. “These are hatchery-raised fish, so they’re used to eating food that looks like the corn kernel.” Other non-corn selections for children’s hooks include the Berkley PowerBait Trout Nibbles, which come in an assortment of colors. And it’s not just a kid’s fish. All level and ages of anglers can enjoy a little Texas trout fishing. “Fly fishers love the trout,” Hodge said. “We have several of the ponds (at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens) stocked with trout. And the fly fishermen tell me that the trout may have been raised on the hatchery food, but it doesn’t take them long to learn to hit a fly.” Even small spinner baits and jigs can be effective. Other area locations TPWD stocked trout include Blanco State Park in Blanco; the LBJ State Park & Historic Site between Johnson City and Fredericksburg; the South Llano River State Park in Junction; and the W.M. Brook Park in Lampasas. Anglers 17 and older and born after Jan. 1, 1931, must hold a valid Texas fishing license to fish public waters. There are other exemptions, as well, including fishing in state parks. For complete rules and regulations, go to www.tpwd.state.tx.us. daniel@thepicayune.com

Marble Falls TX 78654. And, if you want to take more direct action in preventing cardiovascular disease, join Thompson’s

FROM STAFF REPORTS M A R B L E FA L L S — According to the Centers for Disease Control, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Picayune and Dr. Elissa Thompson, M.D., are teaming up to help you help your heart. Thompson is a cardiologist with Austin Heart and practices at the Marble Falls location, 1800 Mormon Mill Road. Every Saturday at 9 a.m., Thompson hosts a walking group starting at her Marble Falls office. The idea behind the weekly walk is to encourage everybody, no matter what age, to get active. Thompson told The Picayune in October 2012 that walking is one of the easiest ways to combat heart disease. In February, Thompson will be writing a column each week in The Picayune about heart health. After all, the second month of the year is American Heart Month. The Picayune is asking readers to submit heart-health questions for Thompson to answer. We’ll pick at least four questions to include as part of her columns. If you have a heart-health question, submit it by email to editor@ thepicayune.com or send it to The Picayune editor, P.O. Box 10,

LLANO — If you’re looking for a reason to lace up those sneakers and run (or walk) for a good cause, Scott & White Healthcare-Llano has one. And, ironically, the reason is you. The healthcare provider is hosting the fourth annual Llano’s Not So Fun Run on Feb. 2 at Badu Park. The run, which features distances of one mile, five kilometers and 10 kilometers, helps kick off American Heart Month. If you didn’t know, February is designated that special month. After all, doesn’t Valentine’s Day fall in the midst of February? But American Heart Month isn’t about your sweetheart. Organizers of the run hope to use the event and month to increase awareness about the impact and prevention of cardiovascular disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of deaths in the United States. Llano’s Not So Fun Run organizers hope the event will encourage people to pursue a heart-healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity and nutrition. The run/walk has three distances from which participants can choose. “We designed the event to appeal to walkers and runners alike, with distances ranging from a one-mile category to the 5K walk/run upward to a 10K run, which should appeal to more seasoned participants,” organizer Colette Todd said. “The name ‘Llano’s Not So Fun Run’ comes from the hills and inclines participants will face along the way.” Organizers are looking for runners, walkers and sponsors. Additional support through sponsorships will help defray costs associated with the run with proceeds dedicated to hospital equipment purchases. For more or to receive a registration form, call Tammy Schaub of Scott & White Healthcare-Llano at (325) 2477824. Registration on the day of the race is $25. Badu Park is located on Legion Drive just north of the Llano River and east of Texas 16.

ADOPT ME Larry is a total sweetheart. He looks like your typical mutt, but his friendliness is off the charts. He’s about 40 pounds, and since he’s a year old, we expect him to stay about this size. For more, call the Highland Lakes Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at (830) 693-0569 or visit www.highlandlakesspca.org to see other adoptable pets. COURTESY PHOTO

Burnet writer’s play lands in celebrated Austin festival BY DANIEL CLIFTON Picayune Editor

B U R N E T — R a y m o n d V. Whelan is no stranger to the written word after a long career as a journalist. But his dream took him beyond the front page and newsprint and landed him in front of live theater enthusiasts in a two-decade old Austin festival. Whelan’s play, “Some Women See Things As They Are,” opened Jan. 23 at Frontera Fest in Austin. The 60-minute piece takes the stage again Jan. 31 and Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. The performances will be held at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre, 2803 Manor Road in Austin. Hyde Park Theatre in Austin produces the five-week Frontera Fest to give more than 800 local and national artists a chance to get their work on stage before audiences. It’s an unjuried festival, so play-

WHELAN wrights and actors aren’t competing but showcasing their talents. “The festival promotes performances by people who normally might not have an opportunity to entertain the public,” Whelan said. “Frontera Fest means a lot to me. The program gives me a chance to demonstrate my creativity.” This is Whelan’s second invitation to put on a play — or act — at Frontera Fest. Last year, his play “Southie Pride Ezzah Given” was

part of the “short fringe.” This year, his latest play is in the “long fringe” category. Long and short fringe categories are based on the length of the play, Whelan said. A long fringe is 90 minutes or less, while a short fringe is fewer than 25 minutes. Whelan’s current production, which is set during the Kennedy White House, tells the story of first lady Jackie Kennedy and her personal secretary, Frannie, as they work “behind the scene.” “‘Some Women’ is historical fiction,” Whelan said. “The story focuses on some of my memories of the 1960s, a pivotal point in recent American history,” he said. “Indeed, I was coming of age during that decade, and the show lets me describe my view of that period.” For more on the festival, go to www.fronterafest.org. daniel@thepicayune.com

Hey readers,

We’re looking for a bluebonnet photo to go on the cover of our 2013 Spring/Summer 101 Fun Things to Do in the Highland Lakes magazine. And we want it to come from one of you. So, look through your photos and see if you have one with family and/or friends in a field of bluebonnets. The photo must have people in it. It must be a digital photo and in a vertical format. And we need a full-size resolution photo due to the magazine publication requirements. If you have any doubts, send us the photo just as it came out of the camera — don’t make any adjustments. Since this is a contest, we have a nice prize for the photographer of the winning photo — an iPod Nano. Submit photos to editor@thepicayune.com with Bluebonnet Photo Contest in the subject line. Please include your contact information.

Chai tea (Originally published in April 2012)

Chai tea not only is delicious but also so good for you. It’s perfect for giving your immune system a boost and relieves scratchy throats and seasonal allergy-related issues. It’s delicious hot or cold. It’s important to make the chai tea in a large, very clean, stainless-steel pot. I have a pot dedicated to tea-making so other flavors do not interfere with the flavor of the tea I’m making. In an 8-quart stainless pot, add 1½ gallons of cold water Turn heat to high and add: n 1 tablespoon black peppercorns n 1 tablespoon whole cloves n 1 tablespoon whole cardamon (crushed) n 2 3-inch sticks of cinnamon

n 1 5-inch piece of fresh ginger, washed and cut into 1-inch pieces (no need to peel) Once water and ingredients have come to a full boil, decrease heat to low, cover and simmer for at least one hour. Stir a few times during simmering process. Leave pot on burner but turn off heat. Add three Earl Grey tea bags, stir and cover pot. Allow to sit for at least 45 minutes. The longer you allow tea to sit, the stronger the flavor will be. Personally, I like very strong tea, so I let mine go for about two hours. Pour tea through a fine-mesh strainer into a pitcher. When ready to serve, pour tea into a mug, add honey to hot tea and stir to dissolve, then add milk or soy milk to taste.

Probiotics may reduce eczema in children PHARMACY NEWS

BY KEVIN ATKINS Probiotics might reduce eczema (atopic dermatitis) in children. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria — “friendly germs” — that keep potentially harmful bacteria and yeast under control. Probiotic supplements might reduce the incidence of atopic eczema in infants by as much as 50 percent. Probiotics might decrease gastrointestinal symptoms in children with eczema and also reduce cow’s milk allergy and other aller-

gic reactions during weaning from breastfeeding. In a new study, researchers randomly assigned 118 children ages 1-13 to receive the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum or a placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, the researchers found the average change in the atopic dermatitis score was significantly greater in the probiotics group than in the

placebo group. Furthermore, the eosinophil count, which measures allergic reactions, was significantly lower at the end of the study in the probiotics group. Atkins received a pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984. Since 1994 he has owned and operated Atkins Pharmacy Services, 701 Third St. in Marble Falls. A second pharmacy is at 2607 U.S. 281 North. He can be reached at (830) 693-2972 or visit the website at www. atkinspharmacy.com.

BURNET — What started as a way to bring in a little extra income for Cameron and Stacy Corbin more than a decade ago has grown into one of the largest indoor inflatable-adventure facilities in the Highland Lakes and Central Texas — but their desire to serve God and the community remains at the heart of the operation. In December, the couple opened Burnet’s Inflatable Wonderland, 209 Sure Cast Drive, which features bounce houses and other inflatables, many the size of a castle. Along with the indoor facility, they rent inflatables for parties, school and church events and other celebrations. It’s open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. MondaySaturday and is closed Sundays. The couple is tweaking the hours based on demand, so for the most up-to-date information, go to www.iwburnet. com. Children 10 and under can play on or in the inflatables all day for $8. This is the couple’s fourth location for an inflatable business. But being “Christian entrepreneurs” isn’t what they started out in life to be. In fact, they were engaged in a more traditional form of ministry. “(Cameron) was a youth pastor in 1997, and we were often worried about having groceries,” Stacy Corbin said inside the couple’s new 7,500-square-foot facility that is load-

ed with mega-size bounce houses. “One day, he came home and said, ‘Hey I have a credit card, and this is what I’m going to do.’” Cameron’s idea sounded simple: buy an inflatable moonwalk and rent it out on Saturdays so the couple could buy groceries on Sunday. “One moonwalk led to another, then to three, then to five and then 10,” he said with a smile. The couple’s rental business expanded to an indoor facility at Northcross Mall in Austin after its ice rink melted into Capitol City nostalgia. But soon, the inflatable began bringing people back to the mall, which had fallen on hard times, and the Northcross owners saw an opportunity to revitalize the facility. which forced the Corbins to close the operation. At first, they thought the indoor-inflatable business was a thing of the past. But then Lakeline Mall officials contacted them about putting one in the northwest Austin mall. And they did. That success led to building an 18,000-square-foot Inflatable Wonderland at Rolling Oaks Square Mall in San Antonio, which they have since sold. The entire time, the Corbins have continued to rent inflatables for birthday parties as well as church and school events, but they’ve always had a dream to open a facility in a small town. Cameron Corbin said Inflatable Wonderland is a great activity that gets kids out of the house. “It’s a great opportunity for Mom and Dad to laugh and play with their kids,” he said. “We chose the name ‘Wonderland’ because when a child walks through the door, we want them to be in another world,” Corbin said. “When you look at the kids inside the jump, they’re on an adventure.” Along with the indoor facility, the Corbins offer a full line of inflatable jumps and bounce houses for rent at the Burnet location. For a full list of the available rentals, go to www. iwburnet.com or call (512) 756-2700. editor@thepicayune.com For more on the Corbins, go to DailyTrib.com.
